I can't find the post right now because I never bothered to save it like an idiot💀but I came across someone talking about one of Splinter's scenes in New Girl in Town when Leo lets the others handle a mission without him and I wanted to add my two cents.

Yeah, it seems wrong on the surface for Splinter to say Leo wasn't in a position to decide whether or not he should lead the guys, and it also seems unfair for Splinter to say he should bear the responsibility of leadership instead of shirking it off on Raph out of frustration with his brothers and their lack of appreciation or understanding. It especially may make one think Leo should be allowed to throw a tantrum because leading isn't going how he wants it to, and his brothers should see how it feels to function without him.

But that wasn't the point.

The point was that Leo allowed his brothers to walk off into a dangerous situation without guidance simply because he was tired of going back and forth with Raph and his criticisms.

Mikey and Donnie have their moments too, but in this particular episode, they're in the background as they witness another falling out between their leader and the resident hothead of the family. They didn't ask for Raph to take over, and no sooner than later do they realize Raph didn't know what and all he was signing up for when he freezes up in the middle of the fight. Donnie is the one to formulate a quick plan of action as he snaps Raph back to reality and incapacitates Snakeweed long enough for them to make a swift exit from the hideout, while Mikey remains unconscious for nearly the remainder of the episode due to Raph's poor planning.

And I seriously need to stress what exactly Splinter tells Leo: "Leadership is not about being appreciated. It is about responsibility. It doesn't matter that the burden is heavy. It matters that you carry it. Now go find your brothers."

He never said Leo was wrong for seeking appreciation; in fact, his future words and actions support the guys learning to show appreciation to Leo, and Splinter is understanding everytime Leo expresses his distress over being responsible for his brothers when they love making his job more difficult than it needs to be. But he needed Leo to understand that when it came to completing a mission effectively without unnecessarily endangering each other, appreciation holds little importance in the moment. You can't use appreciation as a deciding factor for whether or not you should let the team fall apart because your younger brother stomped his foot at you for the umpteenth time.

Splinter emphasizes that leadership isn't something to be taken lightly, and Leo needs to realize it's not something you can just pass on when you aren't in the mood to hold it.

Now, one can argue that it does matter to some extent that the burden of leadership is heavy and their argument would be valid; they're still kids after all and the burden may gain some pounds depending on the situation. That's why a leader leads a team though, so that the weight of that burden can be shared by the members and their efforts when the leader starts to buckle.

But, once again, Splinter is right. It does matter more that Leo carries that burden, or at least the most weight, because he's the leader. Not only are they at a point where Leo is permanently cemented in place as the leader, and things would undoubtedly be shaken up in an undesired manner should he thrust someone else into that position this far in, but his brothers aren't entirely cut out for leadership. Planning ahead doesn't come easy to Raph, Donnie gets tunnel vision and misses details that would be obvious otherwise, and Mikey doesn't always think his actions through before doing them (a bit of blind faith if you will). That's not to say they can't defy the odds at times, but in the grand scheme of things, they function much better as a team with a leader, and Leo functions much better as a leader with a team.

Team building exercises aside, the way Splinter speaks and phrases things gives the same vibes as a parent telling their child not to make a habit out of something they shouldn't be doing. He was evidently upset with Leo for allowing his frustrations to do the decision making for him, but he specifically wanted Leo to not make this a recurring thing because they won't just fall apart as a team by that point: they'll fall apart as brothers. Giving someone what they want because they irked you into doing it can establish a pattern of behavior that no one wants to deal with the consequences of, and irking someone into giving you what you want isn't something you should do either. It sucks, believe me I know, but Leo shouldn't just let his brothers get their way because he's fed up with them, and Raph shouldn't always get his way because he doesn't agree with Leo's way of doing things.

Doing that creates the opportunity for something bad to happen that could've easily been avoided, similar to letting a child do something you know they should be broken out of before that something becomes a problem in the future.

And Splinter doesn't seem mad when the guys come rushing back to the lair without Leo in tow, he sounds more disappointed than anything. As I mentioned earlier, he knows the others give Leo a hard time and he's aware that leadership is no easy role to be sworn into, but he was hopeful that his earlier lecturing would bring Leo to his senses and his son would prioritize responsibility over running off to only God knows where. He doesn't linger on his earlier conversation with Leo though, he spends a few seconds to scold Raph for instigating this entire mess in the first place. He makes sure Raph is aware of the pressure Leo has on his shoulders, with an underlying warning to not take leadership so lightly again, and orders him to find Leo.

Splinter's 15 second lecture leaves much to be desired and explained (that goes without saying), but the curt ending to it, "Now go find your brothers," says it all: leader or not, the bottom line is that your brothers are out there fighting an enemy without your help. Go find them and ensure their safety.

A RANT:

THE NEON LEON

(I) A rise to leadership

Pun intended bc Leo would love it

Has this been done yet? Of course, but i love ranting about my favorite characters and boy, rise tmnt has so much to rant about (well, the whole tmnt franchise has enough material to speak for HOURS buttt rise lives forever in my heart so yeah i'm biased). Might talk about mutant mayhem in the future idk.

Leonardo Hamato/Splinterson has always been the leader, the one that carries the weight of carrying the team and following splinter's steps as the next "head" of the family (as said by splinter in the 2012 tmnt). And yeah in much of the versions of the turtles, this is a very important aspect of his personality, it's his literal purpose; it's the catalyst for a lot of the narratives and storylines seen across the tmnt universe: His fights with Raph, his anxiety, his inferiority complex, his constant wish to be better, how he sometimes neglects (or simply goes against?)his brother's feelings in order to keep them and the team itself safe.

Being the leader is both the weight and medal that comes with being Leonardo, that sisyphean task that we will always see try to accomplish over and over again.

So if we want to explore why he is a great leader... shouldn't we take that weight off his shoulders?

And that my people, it's what rise does perfectly. The best way to prove that Leo is a great leader? To show us how he can handle the team from the shadows, let us see how well he knows his team's strengths and shortcomings.

But don't just make him want to be the leader, no no, show us why we should all trust him to.

First of all: Leo panicking at the face of danger, might be useful sometimes.

Honest to god: i think the rise writers and animators are amazing. They're so GOOD at showing us important pieces of the characters even without directly saying it.

First of all, he doesn't have a fight or flight response because he straight up waves his ōdachi directly at anything that attacks him and his brothers (bro has kill om sight sense, he literally sliced warren one time, remember?). He will always have the advantage, even when surprised. Also the way he lightens up the situation with his witty banter and one liners when stress is too much? Extra points for keeping team morale up👍

Or in a different case, leo's panic when the mad dogs get in trouble upon a stronger rival. Why is it great? Because even though he's losing his absolute shit, he's able to act and take the next conscious step; even when it's used for laughs: He calls for his father when his family is in danger. It may sometimes be a funny gag ; like in "Flushed but never forgotten" or soul fucking wrenching like when they're attacked by shredder and RAPH IS PROTECTING DONNIE AND LEO SCREAMS AND I- *ehem*. But he knows splinter it's capable of defending them, he trained them after all (this may be arguable when talking about season 1 splint but well, he still recognizes his father as a ninja and his master).

And thus, the next marvel of Leo:

B) He's completely aware of the team's abilities

He's a middle child, he has seen everything, and the most perfect example of it: Many unhappy returns.

BOY IF THAT'S NOT THE MOST AMAZING DEMONSTRATION OF LEO'S LEADERSHIP AND STRATEGY IDK WHAT ELSE YOU'RE LOOKING FOR

He trusts his siblings completely, sure he looks out for them and supports them when needed (while being sarcastic about it), but he knows they're amazing at the hero thing.

I wouldn't doubt it if Splinter; being with Leo most of the episode saw just how in control he was of the situation and went: "dude...why are you not the one leading the team? You're...actually so smart wtf????"

C)He knows how to dial down his brother's enthusiasm and calls out his father's faults (and sometimes hypocrisy)

Remember the paper thieves episode?

That's peak leader Leo

The whole team was full on trying to get killed for the lols, and what does he do? Pulls them to the side and explains why they should start with something more simple and gives a speech on why focusing on the "easier task" it's still a good hero job (look out for the small/weaker ones, right?)

Not only that, but he's the one that constantly calls out his dad's mess ups, remaining by his brother's side and defending them (THIS IS NOT A SPLINTER SLANDER, I'M SAD DAD SUPPORTER AND I WILL TALK ABOUT IT LATER) seen as one of the YouTube shorts or when splints nags then about keeping secrets from him: he stands for his team, "you are not supposed to do that/you do the same thing you yell at us for"

He both inspires and defends his team, and hey; a leader is not the one that orders, but the one that motivates and supports you.

D) He's their personal hype man

Cue back to point B, he is amazed by his siblings abilities, even if he dies hide it sometimes. Remember when mikey wanted to go on a solo mission? He's fully on board and never doubts mikey is in control of the situation (sure he does go to "save him" with the others later on but come on, you all heard the call and saw Raph panicking. He trusts him but he's still his little brother y'know?)

He knows Donnie is an absolutely genious and is completely aware of Raph's dedication to the hero gig and responsability.

April and Splints? He knows they're completely capable of holding their own and willingly helps them when the situation calls for it.

And this is it please be free to add anything you might like and tell me if i'm making sense??? Idk i just love him a lot😞

HECK EVEN CASEY, A LITERAL BOY HE JUST MET. He is aware of casey's passion and abilities; i mean, if his own future self trusts him as the only one capable to fix everything, why shouldn't he?

Conclusion: Leo quite literally grew to deserve the role of the leader.

splinter's arc is one of my favorite changes in the rottmnt. and it's neat how the new facets of the rise turtles' personalities are a direct result of splinter's arc.

take leo for example. his personality is one of the most glaring changes in rise. classic!leo's Thing is his stick-in-the-mud traditionalist devotion to ninjutsu. he adopts these traits from classic!splinter, to the point that he's seen by others as splinter jr.

in rise, splinter starts the series as a lazy, seemingly apathetic dude who couldn’t care less about training. rise!leo, like the leos before him, is a chip off the old block. he hides his standard issue leo-ness (his pragmatism & strategic mindset) behind the outward laziness/indifference... basically, his persona is copy-pasted from a certain ex-human martial arts movie star.

and then there’s raph. one of the most notable differences with him is that he was first to land the the official leadership role. that came from splinter likely appointing him de facto leader because the red one is the eldest/biggest 😭😭 rise!splinter didn’t recognize (and/or didn’t care) that leo was more suited for it given raph 1) has extreme anxiety when it came to his sibs’ safety and 2) genuinely believes in "more smashy" as the solution to everything (#mood)

regardless, that responsibility shapes how raph interacts with his brothers. he’s much more concerned with getting them to shape up, because his primary motivation is no longer to enforce his way. he doesn’t have to put all his energy into acting as a foil.

and rise!donnie’s dramatic tendencies and unchecked homicidal ambitions? those are splinter-driven too! in most versions, splinter knew how to support/encourage his kids. he’d go out of his way to praise donnie’s intelligence, bc he know that the brothers would, at most, only acknowledge how useful some of donnie’s inventions are.

but rise!splinter is too busy dealing with his own issues to acknowledge rise!donnie. he probably didn’t take the time to sit donnie down and help rein in his evil genius either lmao. so rise!donnie turned out more bombastic than other versions since bc he’s looking for attention to replace that missing parental validation.

rise!mikey is... pretty much mikey lol. but one of rise!mikey’s more unique quirks is that he’s more vocal about taking on his family’s emotional burdens. again, emotional support was something rise splinter wasn’t really available to provide earlier on. mikey took it upon himself to fill that role.

Lol this is so random and you can completely ignore this but it's been in my mind all day and how his brothers would conform him and stuff😭

Huh! You know what! I think you are right and you should say it louder. To be fair I think he has other insecurities as well (and honestly all of them do. Raph, Leo, Donnie. But it's not about them rn).

Brace ya self I am having HC/ opinion and might be speaking outta my ass lol. And oh I am very chaotic with my thoughts so there's that

In Poland we say "it's darkest under the lamppost", which means the most obvious things are hardest to spot. Mikey is perceptive to others emotions but kinda blind to his own until someone points something out. Like

"Mike, why do you keep flying on that board."

To be fair I think the height insecurity easily relates to his other fears. He is the youngest, the smallest. He isn't as smart as Donnie and often says things others find annoying. He doesn't have "a great burden of leadership" like Leo, isn't the big protector like Raph. He is the silly one. He just wants his family together and have fun with them. Be with them. But he sometimes feels worse than them. Smaller than them in both height and purpose.

Maybe it was a mission that went wrong. While the other brothers were trying to run damage control Mikey didn't know what to do? His brothers' backs now so much taller and competent than his own.

I think first to notice something would be April. She is the most inquisitive - pros of being darn good reporter.

She notices how Mikey isn't cracking as many jokes as before. He spends a lot more time up in the pipes, not even flying around just sitting above everyone.

Mikey has always been an open book. He wears his heart and thoughts on his sleeve like 90% of the time. So a gentle push and a smile is all it takes for him to spill his guts and worries to her. Plus, how can he say no to April, his favourite human.

He wished to be taller, like Donnie. He could reach further, maybe go faster. Prevent bad things from happening. Help people better.

April reassures him or tries to and just hopes to get him to talk to his brothers. She promises she would be there with him to provide support. He's also her friend.

So she gets them all together. She gives Mikey the stage and he starts talking. Probably too much because now he's crying and the brothers just group hug him and just remind him of all the times he saved their hides. Yeah he's wild but being their wild card is good. He's so artistic, great at music and what's important he has so much compassion for others and emotions are so easy for him. Being the heart of the family doesn't make him less important. Without him the family is out of whack.

Raph probably remind him how being shorted than him has it perks because Raph can't get through narrow and tight spaces like Mikey can. And he's not as fast as Mikey.

Family isn't being uniform unit. It's their differences that make everyone work so well together - Splinter reminds them to cherish who they are and build each other up because of the differences not inspite of them.

Then Raph grabs Mikey and sits him on his shoulders. He wants to be taller? Then big bro can carry him around.

Special pizza delivery that night ;)

Leonardo

Leo is the quintessential gentleman. He holds doors, pulls out chairs, and lends a nonjudgmental ear. So when you show signs of struggling with insecurities, he debates long and hard with himself before addressing it with you. He doesn’t want to overstep, but he cares too much about you to leave it be. Instead of asking you directly, he will fix some hot tea (or whatever beverage is your comfort cup) and sit down with you. He will open up and share his own worries and insecurities. How he questions his ability to make wise decisions, and how he struggles with whether or not he is a good leader. He will spill his concerns about causing hurt or worse to one of his brothers through his leadership. And finally, his biggest fears about how you may wake up one day and decide this isn’t the life for you, and leave him. Quick to reassure him, you feel comfortable enough now that when he asks what been bothering you, you let it all out. He gives you tight, affirming hugs and lets you know that he is always here if you need a cheerleader and he finds you to be perfect exactly as you are. 💙

Raphael

Raph understands insecurities better than anyone. He’s sure of his strength, he’s certain of his fighting prowess, and he knows how to keep you safe. What plagues him is thoughts of you waking up one day and seeing him as a monster or a freak. So when he catches you putting yourself down and letting your own insecurities rear their ugly heads, he is quick to shut that down. You are the most amazing human he knows, and he showers you with lots of heartfelt compliments. He opens up the side that only you get to see of him, the warm and loving teddy bear. He tells you that he doesn’t know how he ended up with such a good-looking s/o since he’s like a Swamp Thing. When you fuss at him for saying such a mean thing about himself, he turns it back on you. You shouldn’t speak badly of yourself either. He tells you how you changed his life for the better and gave him hope for the future when he thought no one could find him attractive or deal with his attitude. He reminds you of all the things that he admires about you and when you finally crack a smile, he draws you into one of his famous bear hugs. ♥️

Donatello

Donnie is a fairly confident fellow. He knows he’s smart and takes pride in his abilities. Insecurity isn’t completely foreign, but it’s definitely not something he’s used to. Being the brother that excels intellectually, and then having the skill to fight well too is a bonus. When he sees you, his incredible s/o, moping around and clearly having a hard time, he’s surprised when you share your self-doubts. He thinks you hung the moon (okay, not literally, he’s too much of a scientist to believe-okay getting off subject) so why don’t you have the same faith in yourself? In you, he sees infinite possibilities. As a human, nothing is out of reach for you. You can go places and do things he can’t, things he wishes he could do. He envies your ability to go visit museums during opening hours, to sit in restaurants and be served by waitstaff, catch a cab or even just step out into the sunshine. You can do literally ANYTHING and he believes that you truly can. Ignore the little voice inside that tells you that you can’t or that you aren’t good enough, he urges you with a wide smile. And after all, you have his absolute support. 💜

Michelangelo

Despite his regular show of bravado and assuredness, this turtle knows a thing or two about insecurities. Hearing the police call him and his brothers “monsters” was a low blow. He didn’t mention it any further beyond the night it happened, but it really did a number on him. For a long time, he lived in constant fear of other humans having the same reaction, and worried that his appearance would mean a life of loneliness for him and his brothers. But then came you. Your friendship and subsequent romance with the exuberant turtle gave him hope and happiness. If someone as amazing as you could find him attractive and want to be with him, then surely there were other humans he could befriend. So when he notices that you are sullen and quiet, and he finally coaxes you to talk about it, he’s very understanding about your insecurities. He points out all the unique things that make you, well, you! All the ways you dazzle him and how he has seen others light up just talking to you. He makes a promise with you that the two of you will always talk to each other when you get feeling that way, and make it a mission to cheer each other up. 🧡

Okay so I’ve been seeing people redesigning the tmnt boys, and I wanted to put my own spin on it.

(These are just my extremely altered versions of the turtle boys)

So here they are!

I thought that it’d be cool if each turtles respective colour was gained through their actual species. And yes I’m aware none of them are green anymore, which is something I also thought was weird but another part of me really digger the idea of pushing the limits of these redesigns. So.

A bit of origin of these turtles

Basically splinter was a loyal member of the Hamato clan, however after falling in love with Tang Shen. He moved to New York with her and they had a child, (ya know her, ya love her) Karai. But life in New York can be extremely hard, and so in order to make some more cash on the side, splinter decided to take on underground fights. One day he looses a guy a lot of money and said guy basically kidnapped splinter. And the rest is kinda based mainly off the the rise origins.

Splinter is given to the foot clan by this guy, who at the time said foot clan is experimenting on animals. Trying to make them into mutants, they use splinters dna in this and produce the turtles. But in the same night, a fire is started which causes splinter to both get accidentally mutated into a rat and also allows him to escape with the turtles. As he felt personally responsible for their existence.

However, when it came time to return home to Tang Shen, he couldn’t do it. Being a rat and all. So he went and hid away in the sewers, as ya do. And decided to raise his turtle children in hopes that one day they’d be able to track down the foot clan and find a cure for his mutation.

Here’s some info one the boys too

Leo

Leo is a leather back sea turtle, he is the eldest (according to himself). He remains as flamboyant as he is in rise, but is definitely got a sprinkle of the 2012 Leo too. He tends to listen to splinter the most out of his brothers, as he’s splinters favourite he feels a constant need to live up to that standard. Becoming a little egotistical in the process of this.

Being a leatherback turtle he often just swims around. He is one of the better skilled fighters/strategists of his brothers and takes that with pride (he ends up being a bit of a jerk), but also tends to laze about when splinters not around. He is not the leader of the group as the group doesn’t really have a leader and takes on whatever roles fit best for each mission. He’s still heavy into sci-fi and comic books.

Raph

Raph is an albino forest turtle, due to his albinism he has rather bad eyesight. Donnie made him some glasses for it but most the time he doesn’t wear them. Raph tends to be the best in terms of leadership, but strategical thinking is often left to Leo. He is the one who encourages his brothers to keep training, often butting heads with Leo.

Raph is not as quick to anger as he is in 2012 but he still is more susceptible to it compared to his brothers. Although, he is always there for them when they need him. Being a heavy emotional support for his family (in the big brother tuff love kinda way). He’s also got all the sass of the original Raph too.

Mikey

Mikey is a western swamp tortoise, however all his family keeps telling him he’s a turtle. They’re scared his world will be crushed if they find out he’s not a turtle. Why did I make him a western swamp tortoise? Because i love those little guys and their faces are just so Mikey. He’s the most artistic of the group and is extremely into the old masters (painters). He often forces his family to help him with poses for his paintings.

He is just as energetic as all Mikey’s are. He still has ADHD (like in rise, cuz it’s good rep). Mikey is often the one sent in to get info out of people, he’s a real sweet talker. Like Raph he’s also an emotional crutch for the family, being somewhat of a therapist to his brothers and father.

Mikey’s little bag holds his art supplies

Donnie

I really liked that Donnie was a soft shelled turtle in Rise so I kept him like that cuz don’t change what ain’t broken. Donnie’s practically just rise Donnie for the most part. However, like in 2012 he’s less cynical then rises Donnie. Plus less of a god complex, he still believes he’s the best but doesn’t say it as much as rises Donnie. He maintains his autism form rise Donnie.

Donnie mostly works on new gear for his brothers and himself to make things easier. Leo often points blame at Donnie whenever he’s called lazy because Donnie apparently “set a bad example with all his automatic machines”. Donnie always points out flaws in Leo’s logic, but still loves his brother dearly. And always pops in with a sarcastic remark when needed.

Donnie’s headphone things were def not inspired by the cat earphones.

I don’t think he can do it now but later with training absolutely.

As of right now Leo’s nimpo has two abilities

Portals - these are his abilities in the show and the movie

Healing - this is limited. He can only heal recent injuries. The only reason he was able to bring Usagi back was because he got a power boost from his ancestors. When i5s just him he is sharing his energy with the person he is healing. This can be dangerous if he pushes to far or gives to much. We will see some of this later

I love that Leo was given powers that made him more of a support player in the show. It creates a great conflict for him. The personality he tries to show is face man who never loses. He wants to prove he is extraordinary because he sees his brothers that way and wants to be equal to them. But his powers are different from theirs.

Raph and Mikey’s powers are heavy hitters. Raph’s supersized fists and later ability to multiple allow him to hit his enemies hard. Mikey’s chains allow him to swing above his weight class. Pulling enemies in while stoping them from attacking.

Donnie originally relies on his tech, which is amazing. He built that! And it allows him to supper charge his swings with rockets. Later when he has his nimpo it is all offensive. He’s creating rockets, drills, weapons of all kinds.

Leo’s powers are not like that. Leo’s ability is to move people around. Can that be offensive? Absolutely but his powers put him in a support roll. He can set up Mikey, Raph and Donnie for those bigger hits. We see him doing this with Raph in the final fight against the Krang.

And this builds so much into Leo’s leadership roll. He’s not leading because he’s ‘the best’ or ‘the strongest’ but because he’s a strategist. He can look at the field, see what needs to be done and then move his teammates to the best positions to get their this in.

I wanted to build on this. I loved the medic Leo headcannon and dialed it as far as it could go. But his new ability also plays into his self-sacrificing nature, how far is he willing to push? How much is he willing to give for others? And we will see this play out.

I was planning on expanding the powers more. Maybe a charger? Ability where he spreads his powers over the field like he did in the fight against Hikiji to give others a power boost. When he did it in the fight against Hikiji it was power overspill from the ancestors and a sign of just how much energy Leo was pushing out. He didn’t mean to give everyone a power boost. I think if he worked on it he could do it again. It’s the most extreme version of his healing power and again will have major consequences for him when he uses it. (This is a we are losing and have no choice move)

I think your idea of him being able to search out heart beats is a great baby step to the charger ability. Something he will pick up as he trains. He has to be able to tell the difference between his teammates and his enemies when sharing energy and searching for their heartbeats is such a great way to do that. I love it.

I think the further away from them he is the harder it’s going to be on him to search for them. If they are lost in a cave or same building he can search relatively easily but at greater distances it puts a strain on his body.

We will see this a lot as the family extends their power. The high the level the higher the cost.

Personalities

Guess I’ve never really did one post like this one, but I wanted to list out how I envision the guys to be like, generally. My creativity has been going down the drain lately, so hopefully that’ll boost me up a bit !

-- Leo --

Leo gives out that tough, serious vibe, mostly because he’s the leader and wants to show that he’s in control.

...

But in general, that dude does like to laugh and have some fun!

Don’t worry though, he knows when he has to be serious!!!! ... At some points he just has to relax, you know?

A Man of Culture ™ , he owns some bonsai trees and loves to meditate so he can have a clearer mind. Tranquility is his way to recharge his batteries (yes, I do see him as an ambivert, with a strong introvert side).

A comic books fan, shares that passion with Mikey! He’s more of a Marvel fan, personally - some of his favorites are Spider-Man, Black Panther, Captain America, and probably a bunch of others).

Anger and strong emotions can hinder his leading choices. Anxiety rises in him, which can cloud his thoughts, but he’s working hard on that (and he’s kinda good at hiding his panic, generally).

Even if he doesn’t say it often - he does love spending time with his brothers! Watching basketball matches is definitely a must for those four.

A Leo in love is a smiling Leo. A true gentleman, he can turn into quite the passionate lover when alone with his s/o. He’s not much a fan of PDA, but his s/o shouldn’t worry much about that as the affection is multiplied tenfold later on.

Actually has a good singing voice, but he would prefer to die than to let people know.

Values Splinter’s opinion highly and often goes to him for guidance about many things - mostly regarding his leadership.

It’s a bit hard for him to let new people enter his life, since he’s scared for his family to be discovered and out in the open by any means possible, but he’s slowly starting to trust his instincts and his brothers’, knowing when it’s safe to let certain people in their world or not.

He’s an avid reader. Has a preference for classic litterature, but also enjoys horror, crime stories, and a bit of romance (if he really feels like it).

-- Raph --

Sir Raph bitchinson is in DAH HOUSE.

He’s not afraid to speak up and call out anything wrong in this household.

He and Donnie love to gossip and bitch around - you can’t change my mind. But they do that in secret though (wouldn’t want to hurt people with their judgements!!!)

Can be pretty much eloquent, when given the chance. He’s more street smart than book smart, but all knowledge is good knowledge.

He always likes to come up with some challenges for himself and his bros. Some sort of “friendly” competition amongst them, just to spice things up. He does consult Splinter sometimes to see what could be done in order to train certain skills.

Raph has a lot of love to give, but doesn’t like to show it plainly. He’s gotta show that big buff strong man attitude !!!!!!!!!! ... But he does have a big heart.

He and Mikey definitely do some music on the side - which has sparked the hilarious idea of a Hip Hop Christmas album. ... Mikey does call himself “MC Mikey”, but Raph is a better rapper.

Suprisingly good with arts and crafts (ex: woodcarving, knitting). Patience, precision, and carefulness are skills he has to work on often.

Training and lifting weights are his prefered ways to think back and analyze various things. That’s why when he’s angry, he goes out to train. It gives him the opportunity to calm down (somehow) and review the situation.

Even though his arguments with Leo can turn quite bitter, he knows he’d miss them if they were to stop. Butting heads with the leader is what brings them together (some would argue it’s not a healthy relation, but both are strong headed so it’s just always gonna be like that, you know~)

-- Donnie --

You know that shy, awkward, nerd stereotype? Throw that out the window, please.

Donnie sure is quiet when he first meets new people, but that’s only so he can observe them better and get to know how to interact with them better.

Once he’s starting to grow more comfortable, he’s probably one of the chillest dude you could hang out with.

Sure, sometimes he’ll start blabbering about his projects and throw out some complex terms, but that’s just because he’s always happy to include people into his things (IF the project is going well, that is...)

A patient teacher. Yes sometimes it’s tiring having to explain whenever he says a big word, but he doesn’t mind overall explaining and bringing forth new knowledge to those who seek it.

He’s not one to flaunt his intellect. He is not above anyone and he understands that not everyone has the same passions as him. Everybody can learn something new everyday - himself included.

Has a good sense of humor, mostly sarcastic. Is always up to doing some pranks around the lair with Mikey.

Donnie’s anger management could be described as “the calm before the storm”. He usually has a good control over his emotions, but if they ever get to explode, he can be quite ... “sharp”. He doesn’t hold his words and can be a bit judgemental when angry - but he’s quick to rectify the situation and apologize. Overall, when he’s facing a situation that displeases him, he is silent and thoughtful. ... A lot goes on in his mind.

When in love, Donnie’s heart is soft and he’s a big romantic/cheesy dork. He’s often caught gazing at his s/o, with a smile on his face. He’s not afraid to lay his feelings in the open and doesn’t mind some PDA, but when he and his s/o are alone together, you can say it gets cranked up a bit ;)

Listens to various music genres. Has a preference for 80′s-90′s rock, jazz, and various types of electronic music.

Sometimes does some remote tech support jobs on the side so he and his family can have some money to spend.

Loves to play videogames! The first one he ever completed was Super Mario World on the Super Nintendo (hence why he has a SNES controller with his gear - an object filled with good memories!).

The self proclaimed “handyman” of the lair. He loves tinkering around and find ways to upgrade simple things in the house. He’s always up for a good challenge! (May or may not have a suggestion box for his bros and his dad to drop ideas once in a while <__< !!!)

-- Mikey --

Searching for a litteral ray of sunshine? Look no further; Mikey is here.

For him, finding joy and positivity in anything is a must - at least, most of the time.

He knows his family is not of the ordinary kind with a normal house, but that doesn’t mean things have to be grim and miserable!

This mindset does come at a price though. It does happen for Mikey to have his morale drop considerably low, but in those moments he knows he has his family to support him and make him feel better.

In return he is extremely supportive of anything his family does and will always encourage them when they’re going through a rough patch.

He and Raph love to collect various human items. Mikey has a tendency to go for art related items, which sparked his interest in arts (painting, spray cans/graffiti, drawing).

He also developped an interest in cooking.

Both skills are well received by his bros and he loves to teach them some tricks here and there, along with providing creative inputs to anything (mostly Donnie’s projects).

He’s an empath and doesn’t mind when his brothers vent to him. He wants them to know they are heard and valued! The best medicine he can provide is humor.

He’s a big flirt. Everyone is beautiful in their own way and he’s not afraid to express his admiration.

A party needs to be organized? Leave that to him. He always come up with some cool playlists, lots of booze, various activities, and a theme (if needed).

Loves to reference a lot of movie quotes, popular stuff and such. And it’s never out of place too, which can be surprisingly clever!

Just putting some rottmnt thoughts out here while I got them in my head about the movie and what people are wanting

I know some people are wanting Raph to support Leo as the new leader

I know others want him to be angry about it

But my thoughts are on Leo how he'll react

We already know that he never wanted to be leader and gave a horrified "WHAT" , and lookingnjust as horrified, when Splinter told him he was the new leader. Donnie and Mikey were Equally Horrified while Raph was CONFUSED.

Leo would likely be angry and want Raph to take back the position.

Because the Rise boys arent like most their predecessors in some obvious ways

Raph is a gentle soul at heart and loves and wants to protect his brothers.

He **might** be angry at Leo being the new leader but seeing LEO being angry about it too will likely calm down realizing **neither of them** wanted this and be what he is a supporting loving big brother trying to be there for his younger brother

I dont mind if their is leadership drama between the two

But I will mind if its the same rinse repeat thing weve had with all previous versions especally with how rise has shown these boys relationship

*coughs* anny ways

I think leo will try and get out of it but the thing did say hed be forced to rise up and be the leader so I look forword to see how it is actually handled. We can speculate all we want but knowing what will actually happen is something only those working on the rise movie know.

Guarded Hearts and Safe Houses (Leonardo x Reader) Chapter 2/9

Rated: T Gender Neutral Reader, canon typical violence/injury, light angst, strangers to lovers, supportive family. -for @melodiousmelodrama

Your father stumbles over his words as he asks you to repeat yourself. He's caught whispers of a faction of vigilantes working in the shadows, but he could have never imagined mutants. Mutant turtles.

Your mother, of course, takes one look at the state they're in and any concerns she has about who and what they are are swept under the rug. She sees people who need help. People she is in the position to help. So she gets right to it.

The couches usually give ample seating as they wrap around the walls of the living room. Tonight, they make do as beds for the turtles with their firm, but plush cushions and their deep seats. Father covers the cushions with sheets to catch the worst of the blood and grime, but Mother is so caught up in the hustle and bustle of these strangers in need that she doesn’t seem to notice her white carpet is getting stained with it all.

“Grab me the big kit, sweetheart,” she says to you in a rush. “The one under the bed.”

You’re on it. You turn so quickly, you don’t notice the turtle standing behind you until you’re pressed against his armored chest. “Oh, sorry.”

You look up at him and he looks down at you, eyes narrowing. Their crystal blue color is mesmerizing, so much more human than you would have guessed possible given the rest of him - shell, tail, and all. But beyond the remarkable color of his eyes, you see a depth of pain.

“Excuse me,” he says. His voice is rough with exhaustion, and his gaze slowly turns to his injured companions. “I must see to my brothers.”

You nod as you pass and hurry down the hall to your parents’ bedroom. The first aid kit under the sink was one thing, full of adhesive bandages and a small roll of gauze. Some spray for bee stings and antiseptic wipes. The medical bag your mother stores under her bed is a whole other story. She’s used this kit to stitch your father’s finger after he sliced it making her anniversary breakfast in bed. And set your broken arm while you waited for a taxi to bring you to the hospital.

By the time you return to the living room, Mother has the turtles arranged along the couch. The one with the most pressing injuries lies in front of her. She’s removing his orange bandana and wiping his head with a damp towel. Mother gives you a small word of thanks for placing the bag beside her.

“Injuries need to be cleaned. Whomever is able is welcome to use the shower. If not, use bottled water to help flush out deeper wounds.” You could see the pinched expression on her face. None of this is ideal. But she has enough sense to keep these men far from the hospital.

The red-banded turtle shifts in his spot. His mouth twists and his shoulders roll as if anxious to get moving. Instead of asking if he’d like to go first, you tell him straight, “The bathroom is down the hallway. The first door on the right. Come on. I’ll get fresh towels from the closet.”

He looks to Leo and receives permission by way of a hum and a nod.

“Go on, Raph,” Donnie says as he cradles his injured knee. “I’m better off having the doc take a look at this first.”

The couch and Raph both groan as he stands. He follows you to the shower and the look of relief on his face when he finds the wheelchair accessible shower Father had installed for Gran is wide enough for him. The knobs of the shower are self-explanatory and since he doesn’t ask for help, you don’t offer.

You stack a few towels on top of the sink, place extra bars of soap beside them, and leave him to the rest.

Mother meets you in the hallway with her jacket and purse in hand. “I need to run out for more supplies. Your father is keeping Gran busy in her room so she doesn’t ask about the commotion. Those young men will be fine while I’m gone, but I want you to continue helping them clean up. Leonardo is wonderful, but he’s trying to do more than he should in his condition.”

She cups your face with her gentle touch and gives you a soft smile.

“Ma?” you ask, wondering why the tender look in her eyes.

“I’m so proud of you,” she says.

You smile back at her and let her go.

In the living room, Leo kneels at Michelangelo's side, taking up where your mother had left off. He's silent while Donnie bites back a hiss of pain.

You rush over to help him with his knee. As you watch the wound, no longer soaking the towel with blood, your brows knit together in curiosity. "Are you... healing already?"

"Our healing factor is quite remarkable... compared to humans. By my calculations the tissue damage done to my knee will take only a few days to heal, while the cartilage and bone may repair within the week. Based on my study and understanding of human biology, the same injury in a human would require reconstructive surgery."

You slowly nod as he speaks, in awe of him - his existence, his healing factor, his knowledge, his fearless confidence in his body's resilience.

Behind you, Leo huffs and a pair of tweezers clatters in the metal bowl beside him.

Your gaze darts between Donnie and Leo. Leo’s mouth is set in a hard line, his brow is furrowed with concern. Donnie flexes his leg and wraps clean bandage around his knee. Since it looks like Donnie has things under control, you shift your focus to Mikey and Leo.

You stand behind Leonardo, the sight of his swords sheathed across his back reminds you of his skill and leadership. But as you watch over his shoulder, you see the source of his frustration as he stares down at his hands. Broad, blunt fingers would be ill-fitted for the delicate work of picking shards of glass and metal from his brother’s wounds. Even if his hands weren’t shaking.

You gently clear your throat and pick up the tweezers from the pan. You kneel beside him, trying to ignore the way his gaze lifts to watch you settle down but finding it impossible to ignore the bulk of him at your side.

Your arms brush as you reach toward Mikey and he makes a small move to give you room, but the full mass of him is right there, hovering. He’s warm and solid. His breath on your shoulder comes and goes so steadily you think he must be counting each inhale, pause, and exhale.

Instinct tells you to talk to fill the silence between you. Talking with Donnie was easy. Heck, even getting Raphael into the shower wasn’t too hard.

But Leo is an imposing figure. He’s their leader. He’s all strength and seriousness. He’s in mourning. He looks over his youngest brother and you can see the weight of his failures in the stoop of his shoulders and the drawn down corners of his mouth.

“My mother will be back any minute,” you say as you pull shards of metal wire from Mikey’s palms. “She’ll have you all patched up and ready to go as soon as she can.”

“We’ll be out of here before her return.”

His confession halts your progress and you turn to get a good look at him. “I think you should stay.”

His eyes widen at your insistence, but you know that you’re right. You think Raph may back you up, if he were around, but he seems mighty comfortable spending his night in the shower. Donnie’s eyes are on the ceiling, pretending he has nothing to do with the conversation. So, you continue.

“Mikey, right?” Delicately taking hold of the unconscious turtle's limp hand, you bring Leo’s focus to his youngest brother. “He stays. If you go, fine. But he stays.”

“I’m not letting him out of my sight.”

“Well, neither am I.”

Raphael finally shows up with a towel over his shoulders. “Who’s doin’ what now?” He favors his left arm, but you wonder if that’s due to injury or handedness in general. Even the wounds to his side have started to heal, leaving light, smooth scars in the place where stab wounds and slashes were before.

“Mikey stays here," you say with conviction. "He hasn’t woken up yet and my mother would kill me if you all left in your condition.”

“Well, I’m not going yet,” Donnie replies lightly, “I didn’t get my shower. And Raph probably used up all the hot water, so we gotta wait for the boiler to fill.”

Donnie heads to the bathroom while Raph lies back on the couch. He folds back the sheet so he can lie on the couch. And you let him know there are throw blankets and extra pillows in the basket beneath the end table.

“Thanks. Dunno why you’re anxious to leave, Leo. This is real hospitality.” Raph’s jabs would have landed harder if his eyes didn’t flit to Mikey’s unconscious form while he spoke. Raph grabs a book from your father’s stack of crime thrillers and thumbs through it while he waits for Donnie’s return.

As you fish debris out of Mikey's wounds, Leo paces through the open layout of the apartment. From the kitchen counter to the electric fireplace, he stalks back and forth. Raphael grunts when his brother blocks the lamp light, but he stopped turning pages ten minutes ago.

Your work on Michelangelo is almost done. His wounds are clear and clean, free to heal without trapping debris under the skin. You can feel Leo’s eyes on you as you spread antibiotic lotions over his cuts and check under the rest of his bandages to see the healing progress of the rest of his wounds. It’s incredible how fast their bodies repair themselves. It makes the fact that Mikey hasn’t woken up yet even more unsettling.

Donatello returns and crashes on the couch next to Raph who’s trying desperately to look like he’s not ready to fall asleep. “Though we heal quickly," Donnie explains, "the process takes a lot out of us. To heal most efficiently, Mikey’s energy is being diverted to his deeper wounds, keeping him unconscious. Raph, on the other hand, is embarrassed by how bad he snores.”

“Hey.” Raphael smacks his brother's chest and Donatello crosses his arms, laughing to himself.

“I don’ care if ya hear me snore. I just don’ wanna fall asleep and then get woken up by our fearless leader over here, who’s gonna make me carry our little brother back home.”

A quiet voice speaks up from the kitchen. Leo sounds tired and beaten, “We’re staying here for the night. I won’t move Mikey in his condition.”

It’s as if the room itself breathes a sigh of relief.

Donnie and Raph quietly raid the basket for pillows and blankets, making themselves comfortable enough to sleep on the couch. They're making themselves at home, you think, and that settles some of the anxiety you’d been feeling at not having more room for them to rest. But Donnie and Leo are only half of the story. You tuck Mikey, giving him a whisper of hope and a caress on his cheek, then you join Leo in the kitchen.

Leo stands, hands braced against the counter top, as you approach.

“You’re doing the right thing.” You say, trying not to startle at the way his head snaps up at you. Trying not to shrink away from the raw emotion in his eyes.

It’s not your place to judge what’s best for his family, but you can’t help but follow the feeling in your gut. And that’s telling you that the brothers came into your life for a purpose. You try to reason with him. “My mother can monitor Mikey and check that everyone’s injuries are healing properly when she returns. And again in the morning.”

He turns his face away from you with a huff and grumbles through his teeth. “We’re not accepting charity.”

You take a step back, confused. They had just fought off an army shouting plans to take over the world. If anything, you were looking for ways to pay them back for their protection, for their sacrifice. “You needed help. We’re doing the best we can.”

Leo doesn’t respond right away, but when he does, his tone doesn’t have the same edge of frustration. “We shouldn’t have come here.”

Careful not to encroach on his space, you approach the table that stands between you. “Well you’re here now. And your brothers are healing. Why don’t you let me take a look at your shoulder?”

He looks at you once again and his icy resolve has been replaced by surprise. As if he thought no one had noticed the way he’s been stooping and favoring his right arm. You’d catalogued his injuries when standing over him as he kneeled tending to Mikey. The lacerations to his shoulder had looked thin but deep and the burns on his shell spanned most of the upper rim.

You pull out a chair. “Sit.” Your word is gentle but firm. There’s no room for argument.

He sits.

You take a deep breath as you assess the damage done to his trapezoid. It’s nasty stuff, clean lines but if he doesn’t take it easy and let himself heal, then the cut is going to separate. Your mother may be able to save him from a thick scar if you can convince him to let her stitch it up. For now, you’ll make do as you can with butterfly bandages and gauze.

Your work on him is delicate. He doesn’t say much, but neither do you. You pay close attention to his reactions as you move from his shoulder to his shell. Every hitch of his breath pierces your heart.

Though he tries to remain silent, it’s clear by his gasps and the way he holds his breath that the burns have made his shell and the skin behind his neck far more tender than his shoulder. After a few minutes, he’s no longer hiding his pain.

You console him with a smooth drag of your hand over his arm. His thick muscles twitch under your touch, but he doesn’t pull away. He doesn’t make any sound for you to stop.

“I think I got all of the gravel,” you say, giving his bicep and encouraging squeeze. “I’m going to apply some burn ointment. It stings before it soothes. Are you ready?”

Leo sits straighter and gives a short nod.

You squeeze the ointment onto the wound and spread it with your fingertips.

Leo grips his knees and pulls in a sharp breath between his teeth. His breaths come in quick, harsh puffs. You pet a wide patch of uninjured shell to ease him through the worst of the pain.

“Think I prefer Father’s poultice to this,” Leo says through clenched jaw. “Makes me want to gag but it doesn’t pack such a punch.”

“You have a father?” You feel like it’s a stupid question the second it comes out of your mouth. They’re brothers, they are a family, it makes sense that they’d have parents.

Leo looks over his shoulder at you. His eyes still wet from the pain of his shoulder. “Our sensei. He took us in when we were first mutated. He’s looked after us all these years. Taught us the way of the ninja.”

“Master Splinter,” you recall from the story he told your parents.

“He’s like a father to us,” Leo explains. “He’d never let us accept help from humans. We were never supposed to be seen.”

“So, now what?” You’re not afraid of Leo, but the way he speaks about his father with reverence and deference, has you worried for your family about what it means to be the only humans who have encountered these mutant vigilantes.

Leo places his hand on yours. “We’ll protect you.”

“From your father?”

“No. No, he’d never want any harm to come to you. Especially not after all that you’ve done for us. But you’ve placed yourself at great risk with the Krang. And the Krang isn’t the only danger out there.”

You look down at your joined hands. Leo’s thumb brushes your inner wrist as he speaks. You wonder if he realizes the movement at all.

“We’ll protect you,” he says again. He seems to notice his hand is still on yours and drops it quickly. He turns so you can no longer see his face. “As payment for your kindness and medical care. We are in your debt.”

Your stomach twists at the loss of his touch. You stare at the back of his head for a moment before turning to the table to pack away Mother’s supplies. “Thanks,” you say shortly, zipping up the bag. “Looks like the shower is free. And your brothers left you plenty of space on the floor to sleep.”

“I won’t sleep. Someone needs to keep watch.”

You nudge the burn ointment over the tabletop. “For after your shower,” you say. And, with your stomach still in knots, you bring the medical equipment back to the living room.

Something I think is interesting is that there’s a contrast to how Mikey (the youngest) acts towards Raph’s leadership VS how Donnie & Leo (the middle children) act towards Raph’s leadership.

Mikey: That’s not your problem! ‘Cause I’m gonna go get it! By myself!

While Mikey does wholeheartedly support Raph’s leadership of the team in general he’s much more vocal about his need for independence from Raph than Leo & Donnie are.

Mikey: I had it in my hands! I was literally ready to leave! What part of by myself don’t you understand?

Donnie is constantly showing his support for Raph’s leadership making Raph’s chair in the Turtle Tank the one in the centre & calling him captain & Donnie even gave Raph the King position when giving his family chess code names to present Raph as the leader of the team.

Leo: And Raph is going to put it all together in a plan to defeat that led head with this mystic collar

Raph: Wow Leo that’s remarkably accurate

Leo constantly shows his belief & trust in Raph’s leadership calling him ‘bossman’ & trusting that Raph would get them out of the Foot Clan’s cage as well as trusting that Raph would be able to create a plan to defeat Shredder once Leo brought him the mystic collar.

Raph: You’re okay right?

I think this contrast comes from Mikey being the youngest while Donnie & Leo are the middle children. As the youngest Mikey was probably babied a lot by Raph which led to Mikey wanting to be treated more as an equal & made him more willing to try things without Raph’s guidance

Raph: Donnie if you don’t cut it out with your middle child nonsense!

Meanwhile Leo & Donnie who are the middle children, didn’t have the same experience, being babied that Mikey did growing up which means they don’t have the same need for independence but rather want support & guidance which makes them more than happy to let their older brother take the lead in most situations.

hi! could i request a tmnt matchup please? i'm rather short (1,60cm), chubby, and i look like a mix of 90's grunge and early 2000 emo. i'm anti-authority, and i am a leader, not a follower. if i don't think that a rule makes sense, or is useful, i'm not going to follow it. however, i'm mostly pretty obedient, and i don't cause much trouble. some people see me as a big brother type of person, because i protect and support when needed, and i have a 'caretaker' type persona. i can succeed at everything i *want* to succeed at, the rest doesn't interest me. i present myself as incredibly confident, hella sassy, sarcastic and like i don't have a care in the world, even though i'm really sensitive, introverted, kinda timid and insecure. i cry a lot over small things, and beat myself up relentlessly when i make mistakes. in general, i don't think highly of myself at all, but l would never outright admit that, or speak up. i just really hate having to trust someone with my emotions. i love making people around me laugh, it makes me really happy. i can be a bit petty, and teasing, but only in a joking manner. i actually get flustered really easily, and i never initiate anything, even though i adore physical affection of any kind. what most people are surprised by is my fair and unbiased way of judging. i stand up for anyone who is treated unfairly, even if i have to stand my own against authority (which makes me incredibly nervous). then again, i'm unable to protect myself, and i just quietly take everything that is said to me. i get scared really easily, and i'm afraid of being hit or yelled at. hope this was okay♡

Your first meeting is prolly when he was out on a patrol and saw u trying save an old lady who was getting mugged. He was watching from the rooftop the whole time, of how you advanced and told the robber to leave her alone with apparently no weapon in hand, until he came down when he felt like its showtimee!!

When you find some fault in Leo's plan/strategy you point them out right away and raph cant help but admire you and mouth the word "thats my girl", finally he has someone to back his ass up.

Your leadership qualities are excellent and even sensei confirmed that and raphs chest grew 4 inches wider with a permanent grin on his face and sending snarky looks towards leo, who is just rolling their eyes away.

Though he is usually the tough guy, but with you its a whole different thing. He shows a diff side to you, the side not many has witnessed. He is usually soft and goofy around you, if you're tired he will bring some food over at your place or just take you out for a lil dinner on the rooftops. He will spoil you with things you like.

He knows that you're pretty sensitive and flinch and gets scared of scolding or yelling(he knew it from the first time he had a fight with you and he raised his voice then suddenly he saw your eyes filling up with tears. From then on, he is always careful around you)

Everytime you cry whether be it a sad movie or someone which made you cry, he will cuddle with you and cradle you while brushing your hair and humming some lullaby which sensei used to sing to him.

sorry for the stickers and lines in the latter image of leo, it’s the original one from before i got my sketchbook.

i ended up changing leo’s face. his right eye is burned, as well as his shoulder, and he’s blind in his right eye.

he wears goggles now- lightly based off of steampunk goggles. they read thermals, as well as zoom in and out. he’s also the only turtle who still has their mystic weapon- april still has hers.

leo’s really been through things. at his current age of twenty-one, he’s the leader of the team. though at sixteen, when he and his brothers went to fight draxum and most of the foot clan, he realized they were being overrun and he surrendered as a distraction so his brothers would be able to escape. he ended up being tortured over the next two years, as well as experimented on, but he eventually escaped and returned home, where he’s now planning on how to take his world back from the yokai, establish equality, and throw big mama and draxum away for their crimes, seeing as those two released shredder and made sure everyone else was shoved underground as the yokai had been.

he’s quieter now, and less quick to joke, and matured a lot faster than he should have. but somewhere in that heart of his, he’s still the same leon. he’s just struggling with how to express it.

he has a lot of mental disorders due to everything that has happened.

so this is raph. probably not the best drawn, i’ll redraw him soon, i promise that much. but anyway, as you can see, he’s got a few scars, and where leo has teal eyes, raph has green. ( aka i wanted to give them eye colors, and here they are. ) he’s twenty two, and during leo’s two years away, he’d begun to think leo was dead. but he blames himself fully for leo’s disappearance, and regrets not being the one to think of surrendering first. he doesn’t have his mystic weapon, though he does use his sais. once leo returned, he passed leadership onto him, because leo was the one who showed leadership and protected them all.

raph’s still his cuddly self, though his fear of being alone has gotten stronger, and he usually sleeps in mikey’s room to avoid waking up with panic attacks. he also has a strong fear of abandonment, and is terrified his brothers will leave or get kidnapped again.

also heavily blames himself for splinter’s death, even though he wasn’t fighting shredder with miko and casey.

anyway! this is the baby, mikey. i liked the addition of a bandana, so i threw it on him. he’s the youngest at age 20. upon leo disappearing, he chose to neglect the new way of life and pretend that nothing’s changed. upon leo’s return, though, he wasn’t quite sure what to do. he couldn’t seem to comfort leo. but mikey tried his best anyway.

during leo’s time in captivity, mikey was constantly with raph, bonding more heavily with his elder brother, due to donnie being more in his lab to deal with his own problems. mikey still loves to paint, and he simply wishes he could see sunlight again. he often plays video games with raph and does quite a bit of art- the lair is covered in his art, whether it be on canvases or walls. he chats about everything he wants to do.

he probably took draxum’s betrayal the hardest, seeing as he was the one the most supportive of draxum’s redemption. he wanted his two dads, and now, sadly, he has none.

and this is donatello, the last, but definitely not the least, of the turtles.

he fully blames himself for the abduction of his twin. fighting draxum was also very difficult for him, because his battle shell was torn apart ( again ) and he was carried home due to the wounds on his face and on his shell. he ends up cutting off his right arm for what he claims to be self improvement, though there is an underlying truth no one’s managed to dig out yet. he woud have cut off his other upon leo’s return, but leo had stopped him from doing that.

still a tech guy, he tends to isolate himself in his lab, save for whenever miko decides she wants to waltz in there like she owns the place. he doesn’t find her much of a bother because she’s usually pretty quiet. he’s still sarcastic and sassy, but he is very angry and defensive, and forgets to eat and sleep. he, though he would never admit it, probably missed leo the most because of their twin bond.

he has pilot goggles now, which is pretty neat, i think. they’re modified by the mystic crystals, though, so they work the same as his old ones did.

this is casey jones, age 22. living,,, somewhat his best life.

he met the turtles when he was fifteen, while he was out being a bit,,, crazy on the streets and doing his vigilante thing. he’s played hockey since middle school, and absolutely loves it. he’s learned hand to hand combat, and at school, he’s close friends with april o’neil. though at first, he had no idea she knew about the turtles until she went to introduce him to them, and... well, it just hit him. he was like “hey, i know those guys!”

he went with miko and splinter to help in stopping the shredder, and feels pretty sad about splinter dying, so he does the usual thing: vigilante shit. he fights off yokai who are harming humans or mutants, with the help of april and mayehm. he has hockey sticks, golf clubs, and baseball bats.

overall, casey’s a fun guy to hang out with. currently, he’s working on building up a resistance group to fight back, with leo’s strict instruction. in previous years, he was doing it on his own accord.

APRIL O’NEIL! age 21.

she’s pretty neat. has a scar on her chin that actually isn’t from fighting- her and casey were fucking around on the skateboard ramp in the lair and she fell and,,, chin scar. her jacket is immortal. her glasses are broke, though, and she had to tape them together, but she’s not too mad about it. in fact, she’s not too mad about anything.

she fought big mama with lavi, and though they lost, they managed to escape, and april still has her mystic bat. she snatched that up real fast when she bolted. she ended up forced underground, and she hangs out with her mom sometimes, and tries to hang out with casey vigilanting, and occassionally bugs donnie in his lab, or tries to help lavi pull the family back together- not to much avail.

she’s smart, and funny, and sassy. she’s the same as she was when she was younger, but she’s also gotten to be more independent and strong. she’s very confident, and though she’s been through a lot, she has a firm belief that they’ll win soon enough.

this is hizashi mikoto, an oc.

she’s a small. age 21. she’s formerly a business CEO, despite her young age, and graduated from MIT at the age of 15. she was raised in japan until she was twelve years old, and upon the death of her father and sister, she ended up moving to america with her mom. when she turned fifteen, her mom ended up dying as well to a foot clan attack. her relationship with her mom wasn’t the best- her ninja mother was fascinated with science, especially mutations, and inserted tiny bits of chameleon dna into her daughter through spars with swords. miko’s now partially chameleon. she met the boys by literally falling in on them. chasing down a few criminals vigilanting, she ended up falling into their lair and spraining their wrist when she was fourteen years old.

she fought the shredder with casey and splinter, and heavily blames herself for splinter’s death. she’s in love with technology and science, having of built a company off a computer chip she developed when she was twelve years old. so her favorite spot in the lair is in donnie’s lab. but she also likes to spar, and write on occassion, and is sometimes found watching tv with mikey.

gunslinger. she was born in watertown, new york, where her mother had abandoned her before her father found her and her little brothers in their home, but spent most of her life in maine, until conflict caused her to move away from her family and live with her mémé ( great grandmother ) up in new york. wanting to be a police detective and invest her time in chasing down cases at the age of fourteen, she ran around in a deep search for something to do, something to solve, and one of those days, she found leo. and literally just peppered him with questions about where she could go to find some cases to solve. and then they started being friends because “finding cases” turned into “spa day in the hidden city.”

after leo’s disappearance, she ended up searching for the turtle with donnie. the two were relentless in their searching, but two years later, they ended up finding him because he had broken himself out. she tries her best to comfort him as she had the rest of the turtles and their friends.

often passes out in a pile of pillows. leo usually throws a fluffy blanket over her.

This post was written for the user @j-penny, who insists that Leo is the most unexplored character compared to his brothers. We are going to prove this statement wrong.

We are using the 2003 cartoon as the example not only because it’s known among most fans, but also because we consider Leo-03 to be one of the best versions of the character.

Introduction

Usually those who write analysis of a character use two terms – character development and characterization. However, people don’t usually use the same meaning for both of them. For instance, some people believe that characterization is the part of character development, because we, the audience, discover more details about our character and thus he develops in our eyes. And other people believe that character development and characterization exist apart from one another, because character development implies the change over the story, while characterization implies a particular set of traits in a particular time of the story.

We have decided to choose the second model because it’s more common and because the story of 2003 usually puts the plot on the first place rather than the characters, which is why they develop slowly and their personality becomes more flashed out with time.

Part 1. Leo’s first traits.

At the beginning of the first season we were given some of the most important traits of our character.

Dedication. This trait was unfolded in the first episode, when Leo has passed Splinter’s challenge. Leo loves to train and study; his outstanding physical (and spiritual) strength is noticeable through exercise and combat; it was also observed by the Shredder.

He trains for the sake of self-improvement and he takes ninjitsu seriously.

‘I'm not striving to be perfect, only perfectly proficient’*

‘Ninjitsu is not a game!’*

However that doesn’t mean that he doesn’t like to have fun. He loves to hang out with his brothers, play with Raph, ride a Sewer Slider or a scooter and poke fun at Mikey.

‘With that aside, I do realize the need for fun and relaxation. While I often disagree with Raphael, he is my brother, and I enjoy the times that we spend goofing off’*

The abidance of Bushido. Bushido (honor) plays a huge role in Leo’s life, because it shapes his personality. One’s actions are a reflection of who one really is and Leo’s actions reflect:

His devotion to his family.

His respect for others.

His kindness.

His mercifulness.

This makes him a pure-hearted person and sometimes his purity shows in other ways)))

Introversivness (or isolation). Leo demonstrates his isolation when it comes to his own problems. He doesn’t seem to be eager to discuss his distress (for example, when he was spending all his time out in the barn in the twentieth episode of the first season) and sometimes even refuses to get help (as it was shown in ‘Samurai Tourist’). The only way to get something out of him is to start talking first, because he is never going to be the one to do it.

Leo also has a trait that needs to be cleared up.

Leadership. This part of his character has created a lot of trouble before rotTMNT came out, which is why everything should be addressed.

Firstly, he is not an official leader.

That means that he didn’t have any ceremonies and he certainly isn’t pressured by Splinter, (like he was in the 2007 movie and 2012 cartoon), although the latter does like to leave Leo in charge when he is away.

He has chosen the path of the leader himself simply because he understands that his family doesn’t have a peaceful life.

‘I try to be the leader of the team, since someone has to be and I'm the only one who seems to be interested in order’*

‘I train diligently and read up on strategy to better prepare my family for times of duress’*

‘I guess this may seem a little hard-nosed, but if you were in my shoes, I think you'd agree that someone has to play the ‘heavy’’*

‘I love my family more than life itself, so I feel responsible to ensure their protection’*

Secondly, while Leo can worry about his incompetence as a leader (the conflict of the fourth season), he can also torment himself over something more personal (the conflict of the first season; ‘City at War’), which proves further that his character doesn’t only revolve around his role in the team.

Thirdly, Leo is not a control freak. When his brothers know more about the situation, he has no problem in letting them take the lead, while he takes part in solving local problems.

We also shouldn’t forget that some of his orders exist because of Splinter and as someone who values security and peace, Leo also values his master’s wishes and wants his brothers to follow them, even though he sometimes goes against them as well.

Fourthly, unlike the 2012 cartoon, in 2003 Leo’s brothers respect him and listen to his orders, although they do tend to go against Splinter’s instructions, but that’s a big difference, mind you.

And lastly, Leo doesn’t have any fights with Raph because of his leadership nor is there any hatred between them. Their arguments are usually focused on different opinions, not on the ‘I don’t take orders from you’ line (ex. ‘City at War’).

In ‘Tales of Leo’ Raph showed that he understood that Leo was more suited for the role back when they were kids, a period, when he thought that being a leader was all about bravery and strength, but seeing Leo taking out the huge alligator by using his brains he was exposed to another side of the role.

Overall, Leo and Raph have a good relationship that goes beyond the ‘a leader and a hothead’ shtick. An excellent opinion on this topic can also be read here: (1), (2).

Curiosity. This trait is actually ignored by fans, which in result makes them portray Leo as Splinter’s loyal puppy and it’s not correct.

Leo, as we said before, values Splinter’s opinion, but that doesn’t stop him from wanting to explore and participate in his brother’s intrigues. In the third episode of the first season Leo mumbled ‘Splinter is going to kill us!’ and immediately went off on an adventure and this didn’t happen just once.

At first Leo acts careful, however it is really easy to convince him to take part in anything, even if Splinter would be against it.

Part 2. The outlived trait.

Some fans tend to think that Leo is arrogant. Do these fans have a point when it comes to Leo in 2003 cartoon? Well, yes and no, because he did in fact have the similar trait, although he outlived it pretty fast.

The trait was shown in the tenth episode of the first season, ‘Shredder Strikes Part 1’, where at the beginning Leo was talking about his swords being superior to any other weapon. But where did this thought come from? Well, it was written in some book, so it must be true, right? Splinter, however, said the complete opposite, which Leo genuinely didn’t understand and he was frustrated about it. So was Leo really just plain arrogant? Not exactly.

Next we are taken to a talk between Leo and Oroku Saki and the latter has almost convinced Leo to join to Foot clan. We see that Leo has done the same mistake when he believed the half-truth about swords written in the book – he believed Saki’s half-truths.

In both cases Leo acted gullible (almost naïve) and thus he acted imperious in the first situation and vulnerable in the second. He wasn’t arrogant for no reason and that helped him get rid of the characteristic. After that episode he has never shown the flaw again.

Part 3. The ‘failure’ theme.

Every turtle has a weakness, be it Raph’s inability to control his anger or Mikey’s immaturity.

After Shredder’s second strike we are told in ‘Tales of Leo’ that he has a hard time dealing with failures, which escalates to a real fear that opens up Leo’s insecurities and anxieties throughout the first four seasons. Every conflict that is connected to the character has a word ‘failed’ or ‘failure’ in it, which makes it his inner theme.

All in all, his constant battle against his fears flashes out his character and adds more to it, which will be discussed in next parts.

Part 4. Northampton.

This is an introduction to Leo’s ‘failure’ theme.

After Leo has woken up he was straightway upset. While talking to Raph, who visited him at the barn, he explained what was bothering him so much: he let everyone down, got ‘his shell kicked’, lost his swords (and moreover he developed a fear over the Elite Guard). In short, not only did he feel like a failure, but he was also humiliated.

The one who helped Leo recover was Raph, which again proves that both of them have a great and deep relationship and that Raph, even though he often acts all grumpy and snarky, has enough kindness in him to support his brothers when they need it.

Part 5. The cosmos.

When the boys were stuck in other galaxy, Leo was upset as well. We saw it two times; when the turtles were told about their location and when they thought they have lost the Fugitoid to Triceratons. During both instances the situation seemed to be dead-end, Leo clearly didn’t know what to do next and for him it automatically meant that they have failed. This affected his spirit similarly to how he was acting in Northampton, however Raph couldn’t help him the second time. Leo needed something else. He needed hope. And when he has it he is unstoppable.

Leo was really active during the cosmic arc; he was doing the job that every leader should when his team finds themselves in unknown circumstances. The arc has listed out the reasons why Leo is a good leader:

1. Because he uses strategy.

2. Because he can think fast under pressure.

3. Because he is ready to take risks.

4. Because he is resourceful.

Part 6. City at War.

Leo (and Karai of course) has always played an important role in ‘City at War’ arc.

Before we dive in Leo’s character we have to briefly talk about the conflict. Leo felt responsible for waking up the mafia and turning the city into chaos because of Shredder’s death and he wanted to do something about it.

However his family found the idea of staying at home and doing nothing about the war more appealing, which Leo didn’t like. And even if Mikey said that he understood where Leo was coming from, it wasn’t enough for him to go with Leo to fix their wrongdoings. No one supported Leo, but that wasn’t a problem for him, because he didn’t need an approval from his family; even Splinter, who Leo respected the most, couldn’t change his mind and couldn’t stop him from running away.

‘City at War’ was always known for its main theme of revenge, but this time the writers decided to create a new theme to keep the story different and this theme revolves around, as Splinter has said in the end, following your heart. During the whole arc Leo was acting according to his own views and he always stayed true to himself, which means that his beliefs are strong and he is ready to act independently from his family if needed.

Part 7. Leo’s fear.

In the third season there was an episode about turtle’s fear. At first glance the story doesn’t give us a complex explanation to work with, but with more research more details rise to the surface.

Overall, while Leo does hate the idea of failure, his deepest fears are connected to other issues and it’s great, because it indeed makes him more complex.

Part 8. The fourth season.

It’s the culmination of everything we have learned about him.

The conflict is in one way the opposite of the conflict in Northampton. In the first season Leo was the only one who got heavily injured, but in the finale of the third season everyone in Leo’s family was injured. While talking to Usagi and April in ‘Sons of the Silent Age’ and ‘Samurai Tourist’ Leo described his feelings the following way: ‘the only thing that I could think of was to blow up the ship’, ‘I couldn’t save them’, ‘I was useless’, ‘I wasn’t good enough’. Most of his thoughts were connected to his family and because of his sense of responsibility for them Leo felt guilty for not finding another way to solve the problem. This brings us to the conclusion: while in the first season Leo’s distress was only about him, in the fourth season it was about his family, which is why he was traumatized so deeply.

Just like in the ‘City at War’ Leo have decided to fix his failure by doing everything to protect his family.

Firstly he had to fix himself. He started to train more, forgetting completely about having fun with his brothers (in other word isolated himself). He also became more ruthless with enemies.

And secondly he had to fix his family. He started to train them himself and by accusing them of being immature demanded his brothers to take threats and tasks seriously.

However that wasn’t enough. His self-hatred, him not wanting to talk about his trauma openly, the need to be stronger and his non-acceptance of defeat pressured Leo and as a result he lost his grip and took his anger out on Splinter.

With the Ancient One Leo has learned to accept his failure and to not feel guilty over something he couldn’t control.

After that Leo has fully developed, he didn’t have any more room to grow. He was finished and the writer understood that as well.

The conclusion.

Turns out that Leo was actually a well explored character with rich traits, but why then people like j-penny love to say the opposite?

The first reason is that people simply don’t find these traits interesting. The other reason is that people don’t think that being kind, committed to an old code of honor and showing dedication towards one's family or studying are worthwhile qualities, which is why the only thing that some people notice about Leo is the fact that he is the leader and that he has some insecurities. That creates a limited image of the character, not to mention that some fans twist the image and make Leo a controlling, cold and boring leader, which he is not. Is this Leo’s fault? No way.

So… can you not like Leonardo? Of course, it’s just a matter of taste. But can you belittle Leo in order to put another character on the pedestal? No one is stopping you, but would that make you sound smart and your statement sound true just because you have learned some buzzwords that don’t hold any real evidence? Decide that for yourself.

We were actually thinking about analyzing other incarnations (especially Mirage's Leo, since he is also one of our favorite versions), but we didn't have any time or power to do so...
