Don't know if this helps but I think a lot of people (esp neurotypical ppl) see multi paragraph responses as hostile or confrontational, bc length = very strong feelings. Ppl (subconsciously) emotionally view them as ranting. I blame the fact most ppl communicate online through social media that favors short, punchy/glib comments. Even multi tweet threads are a bunch of short comments in a row; nobody talks on forums where conversations span weeks anymore. I think that's why I don't see long essay response chains on Tumblr as often as I did pre 2018.

Oh, also, ppl not understanding a lot of non-neurotypical folk's communication where you prefer to make absolutely sure you're both getting across the point you want to make and saying everything you want to say. And since the only way to do that is use words (which are such terribly misunderstood things) you use as many as you need to. And then ppl see multiple paragraphs and instantly get defensive.

I still don't think that means you need to change the way you communicate though. Someone can always ask you to clarify your intent after all. Just thought maybe I could offer insight on that one part you questioned. My best friend is autistic and we actually had to have a long conversation about communication bc I was misinterpreting her verbosity for irritation, so it's something I had to think a lot about. Anyway! The tone indicators can probably help, hopefully.

That's a good point too, because it has become less popular (and suspiciously right at the same time TikTok became the preferred socmed site). I remember when multi paragraph responses were just kind of the standard. Like I'm a Fandom Old, I've been around since Livejournal and I was one of the first 10,000 users on AO3 (on my first account).... this is all new etiquette.

TOTALLY agree about the autism thing like. Using a lot of words makes it less likely I'll be misunderstood... until now I guess lol.

My hot take is they should have had Zuko mention Mai just once or twice more if they wanted their relationship to feel more solid. I get why they didn't, but imagine: Zuko is staring longingly at a set of knives on the wall. He's just like "They remind me of my, not girlfriend, but she kind of- I mean. A girl. Who is my friend." and the shopkeeper is like "Those... are assassin's knives." And Zuko is like "Oh, I know. She'd love them 🥺" Zuko thinking about getting her a gift of some kind even in a friend way. I'm now thinking about post boiling rock Sokka like. Trying to cheer Zuko up about this pseudo-relationship where she confessed Some kind of love right before they were seperated. Sokka turning on a suave "I know what I'm talking about" persona. Something about violent, scary girlfriends. "Trust me, women warriors *looove* getting weapons." Maybe the cheering up doesn't work, esp since. Yk. Zuko doesn't even know if Mai is okay. The rest of the gaang could chime in to varying effect.

Maiko doesn't rly compel me(esp in the long run) but if they wanted them to end up being together I wish they'd shown interest and care from Zuko between boiling rock and her release from prison. Even if he's mostly trying not to think about it, and mostly obsessively focused, just a little slip-up in his Not Thinking About It could have made their relationship a lot more compelling to me. Maybe they did show smth and I'm forgetting, but... I feel like they could have done a *little* more to show that Zuko cared about her. Even in just a "She's important to me" way bcs knives are a Mai gift not a "I'm trying to perform my role as a Boyfriend" gift. Even showing a bit of development! I love how dysfunctional their relationship is when they're dating bcs it serves the characters and story well but when he's seperated from her I feel like he should have thought abt her a LITTLE bit. Since they kissed when she was released, right?? That's what the wiki says. He's supposed to Care about her even if he's bad at it. Idk.

lol so we both agree that their kiss at the end does not feel earned, but in your mind, the way to rectify that would be to add more scenes of zuko actively caring about her, instead of simply not having them kiss..? because i do think their relationship makes perfect sense as it is up until the point that i am expected to believe that they are together are by choice. he doesn't actually care about her. that's the point. (or at least, it should've been)

Mixing up the standard "how would you change ranma 1/2 if you could do a modern version" question by asking if you would change shampoo and if so how. Beyond like making her character more respectful of Chinese people

I apologize if u intended for me to give my take on shampoo as a good person 😭 bc i actually really would adore her if it were the opposite. I want her to really lean in on being a yandere. Like she can still kind of be on the line between good and bad for most of the series, but I want her, over time, to become more and more aware that akane is a threat she needs to take seriously. Its kind of written like this already, if you squint lol, but I think by the arc with pink and link she should be getting more desperate for ranma to pay attention to her, and akane saving him (esp after her own grandmother gave akane the tools she used to fight her) should be what really gets the ball rolling on her becoming a more blatant villain, being especially exacerbated by ranma’s “proposal” to akane, and then culminating more or less in the same scene as in the final volume where she’s threatening to snap akane’s neck if ranma doesn’t agree to be not her husband but her slave

Like its pretty clear she doesn’t take akane very seriously already- why would she? She can’t cook, she’s not very feminine, she has a short temper, she doesn’t have much of a figure, ranma argues with her constantly anyway. Better to focus on REAL threats like ukyo, who can actually rival her in Wifely Skill TM. Ranma has to play nice so he won’t be on the streets, he’s not taking her fiancee status seriously. ….But he’s always hanging around her, even when visiting shampoo, and in fact maybe because he’s visiting shampoo and wants someone to be a buffer between them. He only comes to shampoo when he wants something, and she only gets his attention when she’s offering up another phony cure. She hates akane, and, deep down, she hates ranma even more. She can’t go back to her village without him without consequence, and he won’t even look her way! She’s owed him, that’s what her village’s law says! He thinks he gets to choose, but there is no choice, he’s hers, and the sooner he accepts that the better

Kiima doesn’t have to brainwash her, she willingly agrees when she’s presented with the opportunity to get rid of akane once and for all. Sure, there’s the caveat that she’s also supposed to kill ranma, but she doesn’t actually plan on being loyal to these dumb phoenix people. When ranma tricks her after agreeing to her terms and attacks her, she fights him for real, ready to actually kill him, especially when he seems almost willing to just let her so he can join akane in death. When mousse steps in between them she relents and lies about being brainwashed, but she can tell ranma doesn’t really buy it even if he lets it go in the moment for the sake of getting to saffron faster. When she bombs his wedding at the end she cements herself on his shit list for so purposefully endangering akane twice

Idk how exactly i’d end it but she wouldn’t just get off scot-free lol. She’d be SO FUN AS A REAL VILLAIN. i want her to get worse <3 i guess u could argue kodachi kind of fills this role but she’s not really a yandere…. like she’s just Like That even before meeting him. Shampoo’s like that specifically bc of her obsession with ranma and thats the driving force in her malicious behavior. Its sometimes lightly implied in canon but I want the line between her love and hate for ranma to be razor thin

just rewatched the first three episodes of lok and i'm obsessed again. korra is SO CUTE she's buff she's passionate she's self assured she's sassy as fuck she's the whole world to me omg.

welcome to republic city & the revelation do SUCH a good job of establishing the character of the city and really, introducing the new world!!! the revelation has been one of my favorite episodes of lok for a long minute because of its noir aesthetic, the art in the cityscaping, the insane cinematography and composition of the korra/mako & chi-blocker fight! the way that mako's revelation of his and bolin's backstory is a direct parallel to the fradulent backstory of amon!!!! (and the potential behind the firebenders-killed-my-parents stereotype as inflicted on a firebending kid,,,)

AND THE WAY KORRA IS IMMEDIATELY SMITTEN WITH MAKO IS SO FUNNY. the way that it just does not occur to mako at all to romantically like korra at all — he sees that bolin is not in their attic and automatically assumes that he's flirting with korra and is just entire amused at the concept like okay,,, then korra offers to help him find bolin and he goes "nah i got it" and i'm like dude,, if i were in your position i would literally be hanging off of her bc she's so cute wdym Nah I Got It you do not got it you are a hot trauma mess let the pretty girl help you. actually he's aro what.

also i'm yelling about how bolin was written as, y'know, an actual human being with feelings and nuance in characterization in these first few episodes. the show could never make me hate you bolin. and the way mako looks so tired all the time especially in his initial introduction just looking at his side profile, and how he word for word goes "i think i'm gonna turn in; you kids have fun" at korra and bolin STOP. mako physically picking up an equalist and hauling them off the stage like a ragdoll bc they were going to harm bolin is the truest shit of all time. sorry i still think mako should've been a girl but in that moment where he asks if bolin is alright and bolin goes "YES MAKO I LOVE YOU" i agreed bc i love him for who he is in canon too

THE SETUP FROM A LEAF IN THE WIND guys the way the airbending philosophy translates over into an entire theme of the season,, how tenzin and korra's relationship already evolves so much over the course of one episode and how they recognize their own faults and acknowledge each other's perspectives; they were always meant to help build one another into better more empathetic people. i just love watching their dynamic so much um kind of the most important part of the show. also the way that korra sees what mako does in the ring and connects it to what tenzin told her about airbending and how it finally clicked for her,,, sorry i'm once again thinking about the sheer potential that makorra could've been until it got absolutely trashed in about one episode from now LOL. (i'm joking it took about another season before that happened but still.)

i truly don't care what ppl like to discuss about celebrities or how invested ppl get in their lives, i dont even care about how unhinged i think some ppls comments about letitia are. i only decided to post what i did bc i wanted to bring attention to just how much this shit is saturating the tags. i believe a lot of other ppl will agree, idk, but u have to rlly dig for new tish/shuri content bc the aforementioned is all u see 😭 n it gets so tired like it genuinely makes being on here such a chore.

i personally think its beneficial to have these discussions when they lead to actual elightening or fun, lighthearted conversations/topics or just an appreciation for tish as a public figure (as is stan culture) n not in the borderline parasocial way the current ones are, which literally almost always lead to the constant scrutiny of letitia n her lifestyle, people around her, or just plain out homophobia. i could say a lot more, theres a lot of shit to be said but i cant bring myself to care to write more lol

The few times I’ve overheard them when my husband answers the door is “are you Brother (last name)” and my husband says “no they’re not here at the moment” and then some excuse of “I’m actually just going up to bed/it’s not a good time etc”. He wants nothing to do with religion as a whole so he doesn’t want to talk to them to begin with but they’ll just stand at the door for 10 minutes straight to make damn sure that nobody is home before they leave, so it’s faster to just open the door and send them on their way

One time I was upstairs watching out the window and there was a third person in their car with a computer or an ipad or something in their lap with the brightness all the way up. Once my husband got them to leave, I went around and made sure every door and window on the first floor was shut and locked. Like you show up where I am, after dark, AND I’m not expecting you? I’ve seen too many episodes of Criminal Minds for that, thanks.

Apparently they show up just to talk to my ILs, idk if it’s for actual church goodwill reasons, like how the church that I grew up in used to do home ministry for people that couldn’t physically make it to the building, OR because my ILs don’t go to any mormon church out here and the overarching church wants to keep tabs on them, like you said. I lean toward the second one but I’ve never been at their house when they’re home and the mormons show up (nor do I want to be, I don’t need them knowing who I am to stalk me like that)

Omg the mormons I was trying to ghost did the same thing, it was always young men in their mission outfits and they would stand outside for FOREVER, like 15 or 20 minutes after knocking. And listen, if I'm not expecting someone and they don't look like the mail person or police or someone official, I usually don't answer (the only people who'd do that around here are trying to sell you something). If there's no answer, most people leave in like 30 seconds so it legitimately did freak me out when I'd walk by the a window 10 mins later and catch these guys out of the corner of my eye (and hide lol).

I totally agree, in your ILs case I'm definitely leaning toward the second explanation too. It sounds like the same kind of behavior bc in my case, they were trying to get me to come back after the recruitment thing, and in their case maybe it's the same protocol for mormons who the church knows are in a certain area with a church but not attending.

I don't blame you for not wanting to engage. Don't get me wrong they're usually perfectly friendly, but they have a very vacuum salesman approach once you start a conversation. You have to really be firm and say no so many times, esp if it's not a first time thing and you're involved with the LDS somehow.

→ The man is TOUCH STARVED. He’s so used to being the shoulder for people to cry on when you offer to cuddle with him without expecting him to comfort you he fucking reels.

→ To elaborate on the above; in public he’s pretty subtle, usually just holding your hand or letting you lean on him when the trains are packed and you can’t reach a handrail. But in private he’s the walking definition of clingy. He has on more than occasion begged you to sit in his lap while he does whatever task he needs to do just so he can feel you near him.

→ Whether his name is Ren or Akira is an ongoing joke that Sojiro knows the answer to because of having done all the probation paperwork, but he won’t spill no matter how much the PTs beg him to

→ Despite his maxed proficiency stat and the amount of time he spent playing video games prior to moving to Tokyo he is entirely mediocre at mario kart.

→ He can draw! He doesn’t do it often and is unwilling to admit that he’s actually pretty okay at it.

→ He bluffs his way through the first time you sleep with him because he is a virgin somehow even with almost every living human in Tokyo throwing themselves at his feet.

→ The fact that he’s a quick shot is a closely guarded secret that you unearthed because you noticed he makes a point of making you cum on his fingers at least once before fucking you and when confronted about it he went very quiet and tried to stay stone faced despite the comically bright blush that painted his cheeks.

→ Awful phobia of needles post 11/18 to the point where he avoids seeing Takemi because the cartoon needle on one of her posters is enough to trigger his panic attacks.

→ He has frequent nightmares, and won’t tell you why. But they worsen significantly post 11/18, with him calling you at least once on most nights to help him through his panic attacks.

→ He has a reputation for being desperate, and he definitely is, but in reality he’s far less shallow than it seems.

→ When you ask for his help dying your hair he practically leaps at the idea, and you learn that he’s really fucking good at it from maintaining his own bleached hair.

→ Ren got him a super sonico figure as a gift once and it lives unopened under his bed. Not because he has shame or doesn’t like it (he very vocally loves it actually) but because he’s worried about his mom accidentally seeing it one day.

→ THE PUPPY DOG EYES OMFG

→ The smell of alcohol gives him panic attacks, and he makes a point of avoiding the trains at night because of this.

→ Despite his initial reaction to conflict being fighting, he crashes hard after and often isolates himself for hours after while he dissociates.

→ He smokes more than he’s willing to admit, and thoroughly hates himself for it bc he can feel it fucking up his lungs and making it harder to catch his breath when he’s running.

→ He is bi, but is very defensive and unwilling to talk about it because he’s still working through the homophobia instilled in him by his father.

→ He is also a quick shot, but isn’t really good enough with his hands to compensate.

→ He does however really like watching you get off without him while he waits for you to finish so he can fuck you.

→ Women <3

→ She often asks you to model with her, and should you agree she beams like you’ve just given her the best gift she’d ever received.

→ Her love of sweets seems to be contagious, as the more time you spend with her the more you find yourself enjoying them.

→ Really hates being touched, it takes her several months of gentle encouragement to let her hold your hand because the only person who ever had was Kamoshida.

→ Extremely anxious around men, and often gets you to stand between her and any dudes on the trains/in public in general.

→ Horrific self image issues, she covers it well with faux confidence, but she is deeply insecure and tends to hide herself away when she’s doing poorly.

→ She cries a lot, just in general. It doesn’t even need to be sad, she’ll cry just as hard over a really cute dog as she will a heart wrenching scene in a movie.

→ The local Romance Expert despite never having been in a healthy relationship.

→ You can tell when she’s struggling because it’s the only time she could be caught dead in sweatpants.

→ The pink highlights from her P5D outfit are canon to me, argue with the wall.

→ He asks to paint you often, but rarely actually does. Often breaking down into fits of insecurity about his “inability to capture your beauty” as he puts it.

→ So very autistic, he is easily overwhelmed and carries a little notepad that he uses for communication when he inevitably goes non verbal, and for little doodles to help him ground himself.

→ He really awkwardly asked you out after a long conversation with ann about the difference between romantic and platonic feelings

→ “Ah… So my urge to include them in every single one of my paintings in some way is not platonic?”

→ He borders on obsessive about you once you & him start dating officially, and often cancels plans with the PTs to spend time with you.

→ Shy of losing himself in his painting he will drop anything he’s doing regardless of its importance on the off chance he can see you.

→ He asked at one point to paint you nude but for the first time in his life got so flustered at the sight of you that he had to excuse himself, and never asked again after that.

→ Past the first time asking him to hold your hand, he’s very casual about physical affection. Often attaching himself to you in one way or another unconsciously.

→ The only PT besides Akechi who isn’t a virgin.

→ Everyone was fucking appalled when they learned this ^ because how did yusuke end up with bitches and akiren didn’t???

→ Haru was her lesbian awakening and even though they’re not dating anymore she still loves Haru dearly

→ That can be said about most of her exes, she tends to fall in love quickly and never really fall out of it, thankfully the rational part of her has prevented her from being seriously hurt.

→ Absolute pillow princess, despite the ongoing bit about her pegging ryuji there is not enough money in the world to convince her to be any kind of dominant.

→ almost kissed ann once on a dare and was so nervous she literally started sobbing, which caused ann to also start sobbing, they never ended up kissing.

→ She is autistic in the opposite direction as yusuke, she’s perpetually underwhelmed and needs to have 5+ different stimuli going at any time for her to be able to do anything

→ Didn’t stop hallucinating after her heart was changed, they just became mild enough to ignore.

→ Had a really weird crush on akiren before her heart was changed, in hindsight it was probably just because she has a voice kink and she spent a lot of time listening to him talk.

Hello gonna ask a question that doesn't really have a straight answer but like why do blogs post opinions on jason and if they get a lot of notes they're suddenly treated like the absolute truth and only good interpretation of jason? Some blogs get treated like they know characters (jason) so much better than anyone else and you look and it's just the same complaints and takes over and over again. Like no I don't take every appearance jason has as canon because some of them are deliberately ooc or just written out of existence at this point. But you have people who just insist jason did every bad thing ever and you have to admit he's wrong and the replies are all "omg how does it feel to be completely right?" I don't think they know how it feels because they're not actually right lmao.

also the ppl who insist jason did every "bad thing ever" usually tend to be villain jason truthers(i wont deny that i think that way sometimes as well but but i think calling him a villain is simplifying it by A LOT) or canon truthers where they're like "ugh fanon sucks why do these ppl like this and canon rulz why do ppl like fanon better than canon" which honestly makes me question why they're on tumblr tbh. this place is THE fandom website (besides ao3 obvs) and oviously its not gonna be canon compliant most of the time. these ppl exist in all fandoms but i gotta say they seem very weird to me in dc. dc literally said "everything is canon" which is basically equivalent to saying "canon doesn't exist"+ esp batman stuff is like...80 yo?? so there is gonna be A LOT of inconsistencies bc of different writers and times and retcons. so i rlly dont understand why these ppl cling to canon so much.

also also these ppl are (again, USUALLY) the ones who say "if you like a villain/morally ambigious/anti hero etc. character you HAVE to acknowledge their wrongs :/" and agreeing w this stuff makes ppl feel morally superior over others so it kinda creates an echo chamber??

i... to no ones surprise, reaaally like steven. glitchys up there, but i think his og pokepasta sort of sucks ( which is not an unpopular opinion ), but strangled red ( specifically strangled red, strangled and doors open are... neat, but sort of badly written and way more stereotypical ) is just... mwah. chefs kiss. stories about grief and abt a depressive spiral that gets worse and worse AND you get to see how he was like before it? soo good. you can argue the missingno plotline in it was unnecessary which i could agree but i think its just cool more than anything else, esp since most pokepastas based on gen 1 use it or other glitches in the 1st gens for horror a lot, which i think is interesting. missingno can be many things!

i like to think logically that glitches and stuff in game prob exist in the pokemon universe as well, since... well.. pokemon can be turned into data. you put them into the pc. missingno likely just exists and is a heavily corrupted pokemon that is not supposed to be there, or a glitch that the pc or something made real.

therefore, miki probably was "healed" because missingno "filled" her "missing data" or something like that, but i like to keep it more vague and ambiguous too. you can do a lot with strangled red and steven, miki, and mike too which just intrigues me. once again read lessons in guilt and grief and faulty on ao3. they explore this and steven, mike, ( and daisy who doesnt get enough attention ) in a way i 100% agree with and enjoy .

as for other characters i obviously enjoy glitchy but i much more enjoy the like... post-fnflull version of him cuz' in his original popularity he was just sort of prettyboy red who was also a creepypasta but ppl barely drew him like he was one ( i like fnf lulls interp bc of how his body constantly stutters and how when hes irate his mouth just stretches and shit like that. gmod ragdoll with broken physics ass mf ). also as said before his pokepastas sort of forgettable but i do like the concept of a red stuck in a game self aware bc im allll for that shit. i am an IHNMBIMS fan, i love AM, i love self aware AIs that feel trapped and take it out on every1 else or cope with it in Some Way... very interesting concept, idk.

honorable mentions for pokepastas that ppl prob know that i do not talk abt a lot that i like the writing or concepts for are DISABLED and Hell Bell.

hell bell you could argue has a stereotypical 'pasta ending of "ooooh you die in the game you die for real" but idk i eat up the way they did it in hell bell bc the person doesnt die but they sort of do since nobody can see em anymore ( iirc, i hvent read it in a bit ). also uses gen 4 which as someone who started mainline games with diamond and pearl respectively, i enjoy that a lot.

for DISABLED, its not super deep or scary or anything ( ok well its scary for the narrator obviously ) but its another one that just sorta makes me feel bad in all the right ways.

i have concepts for pokepasta aus of my ocs and some side characters but they arent pokepastas theyre just like... ppl who live in the world ( of fnf lull usually since i like to think everything there is connected and coexists somehow ), but i am not original to save my life so i dont think id make an actual pokepasta anytime soon, lol. the closest i got was making a super horrible choose your own adventure where you played as a cubone on deviantart when i was like idk 9

as for internet and fandom stuff, i dont associate myself w fandoms or fandom terminology and unironically i just start to call myself an "enjoyer" of things, bc i dont like being associated w anything... fandom oriented a lot of the time anymore. a lot of fanonization of characters also sucks. i do think the pokepasta fandom has some funny fanonizations though. like yes dilfify that man ( @ steven )

also esp for pokepastas bc i have Hyperfixation Shame. its why i have a sideblog for it, both so it has a concentrated place to go and so no one knows i like it enough to write abt it lol

(personally I always found that it sold the isolation between the two of them more. He can barely even express his emotions towards her. She is reaching out, she is trying so damn hard, and yet he cannot reach out to meet her. Just like with her father. Just like with the goddess. She tries the best she can, and it is just NEVER enough.)

(I also think this is why post awakening Link is more expressive in what we see of him being expressive - he doesn't have all his memories back, he isn't living constantly with the knowledge that if he slips he'll fail. It's why BOTW link succeeds where his last self failed - He's no longer terrified of feeling. Of reaching out. Zelda reaches out to him, and she succeeds. She talks to him, she guides him, and together they achieve victory. Despite everything, despite all the failure and the pain, they succeed.)

(like don't get me wrong it's not Spirit Tracks w/ Zelda literally possessing a phantom in order to protect Link, and Link being SO excited to drive a train for her, but like. Idk I would love to hear your side bc you always have such insightful thoughts and I really respect and value your opinions, esp on this stuff!!)

LOL part of my motivation for correcting the Ken Penders thing is that usually when I see people "correct" it, they ALSO attribute it to the wrong person? Like I'll see people say "Ian Flynn designed Scourge!" but while he WAS the writer for the issue where Scourge came to be, he wasn't the one who came up with the design- that was Patrick.

I also don't play Sonic. Why I know these things is beyond me. As for the Zelda thing, well...

I ended up taking a lil while to reply to this because I was having trouble getting my thoughts in order about it and putting those thoughts into words. I wanna preface this by saying: I absolutely agree with your angle here, and one of my main problems (personally) is that I simultaneously know what they were trying to do with the characters, while also not having that come across to me in the moment at all.

Because like, I genuinely think that Link's muteness and stoicism being a trauma response is an incredible idea. It's a genius way to incorporate his "silent protagonist" schitck in-universe, and provides depth to his character in doing so. However, the problem is that in execution, it doesn't come across that way.

The best comparison I can come up with is how, when the hunger games movies came out, everyone was complaining about the lead actress's performance and how she never emoted, but in actuality she was giving a very book accurate performance- Katniss was the type of character who never showed her emotions on her face. And this was fine in the books, but when the medium was changed to film, rather than having that come across, people just thought the acting was bad.

That's the same feeling that Link's stoicism gives me, the way it's presented comes across as less "forcing himself to silently bear these burdens and never let them show to anyone so he can be a pillar of strength" and more "no thoughts head empty while other people are talking".

And the reason I think this detracts from Zelda's character is because I think one of the two big yardsticks for measuring Zelda's quality as a character is: how well the game sells her relationship with Link (not in a romantic sense btw). I don't inherently ship the two, and will thus not be interested in their relationship simply because they're Link and Zelda. I need to be convinced on a bond between them every new incarnation. But the reason it's Zelda's character that's dependant on this is because Link is the player character that we spend time with, so even if he's completely nothing, we still get attached to him by virtue of having him be how we interact with the world. But Zelda is restricted to her interactions with Link, or at least what Link sees of her, so even if Zelda has tons of character, if I'm not convinced on her relationship with Link, makes her feel worse to me.

This is why I think ST Zelda and SS Zelda are the best ones: They convince you that Link and Zelda are friends, that they care about eachother, that they enjoy eachother's company, that they'd hang out even outside of their assigned roles as "Hero" and "Princess", and it's Link's reactions to her that sell it.

In ST, they start out as strangers, but you spend the entire game watching them grow closer to eachother, become friends, and what makes it work is that it's not JUST Zelda who's selling you on this relationship, it's Link's reactions to her, the little laugh he gives after she possesses a Phantom for the first time, their amazing silly high-five after beating Byrne, the way his first reaction after having her land on him was to smile because she'd gotten her body back- can you imagine how weird the game would feel if Link never emoted?

In SS, this incarnation of Link is easily the most expressive "adult" Link, and they use this to show you how much he cares for Zelda. You IMMEDIATELY know what his relationship with her is like from the way he smiles at her wake-up letter alone. Even if the game didn't tell you they're childhood friends, you'd be able to know because the nature of their relationship comes through in every single interaction they have with one another.

Meanwhile in BotW, they tried SO HARD to give Zelda depth and these interesting aspects to her character and her relationship to her role as a princess, and then her interactions with Link fall flat and it drags her down so badly, especially because this relationship is supposed to be the focal point of the game. It ruins the entire climax of the final memory, where watching Link die unlocks her powers, because their relationship feels hollow to me, and as a result it makes Zelda feel weirdly... callous in this moment? Instead of coming across as desperation, as actually witnessing the atrocities of the calamity firsthand and finally tapping into her power because of it, I was left wondering if Zelda just didn't care about anybody outside of her assigned love interest at franchise. Which is absolutely not what I should have been feeling or what was trying to be conveyed, but was the taste the scene leaves in my mouth regardless.

I think what it ultimately boils to is: I really fucking hate the cutscene where Link saves Zelda from the Yiga, because that's where I think the ball was dropped. Allow me to explain. More than anything else, what should have been a massive turning point in Zelda's feelings for Link as they change from animosity to seeing him a new light, just comes across as hetero trite, where the writers just shortcut to "these characters are in love now" because one is a boy and the other is a girl so OBVIOUSLY we're supposed to assume a romance between them. It's like Zelda suddenly remembered they're supposed to be love interests because Link... did his job. Being her guard is his job, and protecting her like that is the reason he was following her around beforehand even when she didn't like it. It makes it feel like Zelda somehow never realized she was in danger before or something??? This image from OSP's romantic subplot trope talk almost perfectly encapsulates what I mean here:

The moment that SHOULD have been the turning point to their relationship should have been a moment where Zelda sees Link not acting as her stoic knight, a moment where she sees beneath the front he's put up to protect himself and realize they might actually be able to get along and that she's been projecting onto him and being harsh. Because Link being a seemingly flawless knight is one of the causes of her own insecurities and why she can't stand him at first, so having Link perfectly embodying that idea should not be what makes her fall for him!!! It should be the opposite! I hate this cutscene so much!

And even though the rest of the memories are spent trying to build this relationship, the fact that this was what made Zelda go from hard tsun to instant dere just sours the rest of their interactions for me. Not to mention the implication, if you get all the memories, that after everything Link just... goes back to being Zelda's silent, stoic knight? Which feels worse the more I think about it.

This probably ended up pretty incoherent and I'm also probably wrong about a lot of things, but the main thing is that, while I understand (and even like!) what they intended to do with Link and Zelda in theory, it doesn't come across (TO ME) in practice, so the whole thing is at odds with itself in my head. In the end I'm pretty sure this is just a me problem though, and probably me trying to rationalize why a character I should, by all rights, really like, just doesn't click for some reason.

BTW somewhat off topic but the second yardstick I have for measuring the quality of Zeldas is "how divorced is she from being a dignified princess" because the less dignified Zelda is, the better. ST is another good, emblematic one here because Zelda's freak-out completely shatters any such perception of her and immediately makes you attached to her, while her predecessor Tetra kinda falls flat in the last part of WW because the instead she transforms from "Tetra" to "Zelda" she immediately loses all of her character and becomes a demure dignified princess who waits to be kidnapped by Ganondorf (though thankfully she recovers some of her personality in the final battle and for the sequel). This is also why I don't care for TP Zelda as said before: We don't see her outside of her capacity as "dignified princess", though that's also because she has like five minutes of screentime, three of which are spent on exposition.

Even more off topic but man, it really sucks that WW and ST are the only games that have Zelda actually fight the final boss alongside you? I'm so shocked that this didn't immediately become the series standard for every game afterwards because it's so good.

Sorry for all this negativity, but also thank you so much for allowing me to exorcise this demon from my body.

At he Angry!Anon bc whoa brother. Look a lot of the fans I come across all mutually handshake that he's terrible. That's the attraction! However, even though he is a heinous bastard I'd like to point out a few things. Belial is NOT free of blame here. In Belial's unlock quest there is a scene detailing that Lucilius died with a smile on his face. It's heavily implied he never intended to make it through his own plan & left Belial to carry it on. Those visions of his were driving him mad & if his magnum opus took him out, that's swell actually. The mad adored Lucifer more than he did himself.

Honestly I could go on for hours of what Lucifer & Belial are actually for him but that's conjecture & ain't the point.

What I am pointing to tho is that he died on his own terms more or less & happily so. Belial then later goes on to state to Lucifer's decapitated head that he didn't care if Lucilius wanted to be back or not. & it is implied that what Belial did in 000 was actually against Lucilius' will. Which makes sense as to why he's PISSED.

Belial had Lucifer destroyed, brought Lucilius back from the dead despite dying in a way that was acceptable to him & DID IT IN HIS MOST BELOVED PERSON'S BODY. Like my man, he's awful but sure as fuck he is justified in at least a little of that anger.

Also I'd like to correct on his treatment of his creations. Belial was treated like ass & Sandalphon was treated terribly. Outside of the those two he was actually fairly kind if not a bit distant. You know going half mad kinda puts a kink in things. But yeah in comparison to the Astrals at large & it being a point of contention to the astral council that Lucilius preferred the Primal's free will. Ergo Lucifer & Belial canonically not having limiters.

Like there's a lot that can be put together about Lucilius' character than this egomaniacal madman who's an awful abuser. It just takes looking at the context & using a little critical thinking. Put down the rose colored glasses for Belial &/or Sandalphon.

Also a note on Lucilius being "right." When I see people say he was right it's usually tongue & cheek bc their day is going to shit. I do it too lol. OR if we are getting into the meat of the text. Bahamut is a DICK & things are shaping up to where Danchou likely needs to shank him. Or at least shake the big lizard around a lil.

Even if you hate Lucilius (which is justified), a broken clock is right twice a day.

aaahh i understand your point on a character analysis standpoint and i get that it's not aimed at me and thank you for that, but please let's not refer to one another as bastard on here okay, i don't want fights to be started in there

And while i personally agree with your reading here, like i said in my answer to the anon, i think it's important to respect the limits some people do have with those characters. And i do actually think it's even more important when this lack of comfort can be so personal.

sorry i have to preface the ask like that. I do think your argument is pretty good though and your own feelings are really good, but please let's be nice and respectful with one another on here, especially when it comes to character readings. (and esp since i'm kind of in the middle of all of this)

That aside and back to the meat of the ask i do really like the character interpretation of Lucilius on here and i do think it's more interesting that he's not a one note villain, and that as such there are more nuances to his character to read on, and therefore more compelling sides to explore. I do personally really like the appreciation for free will angle when it comes to Lucilius, but yeah he's a messy person who's been driven mad and had a hard time reconnecting to his reality and the people in it.

Also i think in general the "they did nothing wrong" points can be a funny element of misinterpretations in fanbases because it's used ironically a LOT but from the outside it can sometimes look like it's said unironically and it ends up creating misinterpretation problems by a long shot ahah. I usually kinda stay in my corner so i don't really have a real overview of how fans behave and i keep it that way mostly, but as someone who also does a lot of "my fav did nothing wrong (lying)", and who's been misinterpreted about it before, this is. quite a thing isn't it.

(but also yes Bahamut is a Dick and i do think Lucilius is right to want to take him down, just like Lu Woh is right to want to take him down. Bahamut causes a little too many problems not to. Lucilius' reasons strikes to me as more personal, but that doesn't mean he's particularly wrong, especially when his issues with Bahamut can be similar to say, the way Lucio himself has been deluding himself into thinking he wasn't mad at Bahamut for those said issues while it was hurting him yaknow?)

anyway yeah they're both terrible and i do really like this reading

and i won't lie i'm a bit reassured that you didn't aim it at me in particular (bc i know i can be mean to Lucilius too so at least i am glad about that)

but yeah just, please let's be nice to one another here, it's fine to have disagreement over character readings and fictions, especially when it can cut deep and personal, but everyone is entitled to their own limits and let's just at least not be too hard about it

im not v good at media analysis but ive had some thoughts bouncing around in my head that i need to outlet somehow so just, bear with me okay lmfao

anyway i think that at least in the first 3 movies death is meant to be synonymous with love, and it drives me batshit insane (affectionate). like ok first there was that post that went around a few years ago that rightfully pointed out that every man elizabeth kissed has both been in love/lust with her and also has died. (i am also including jack in this, because although i dont think they were ever "in love", they're practically obsessed with each other in a strange toxic sort of way that weaponizes affection so it counts lol. i could go on about this too bc it makes me insane too)

not to mention, like, davy jones' entire story being a tragic love story, the man literally cannot die because of calypso... i mean its not that simple obv but from his perspective at least he believes calypso does not return his affection for her even though she DOES, just not in the way he can really anticipate or comprehend. which to me i think means that while death = unrequited love, undeath or coming back to life (like will does as well) is a sign of love that is actually returned

like i could go on but ANYWAY, this all in mind, the fact that jack and barbossa then are both responsible for not only killing each other but that barbossa led the charge to bring jack back to life is crazy like?????? are we seeing this

I might personally not go so far as to say they're synonymous but I'd absolutely agree that they go hand in hand, like it's sort of hard at least for me to draw direct symbolic parallels but so much of the death we see is definitely tied super closely to love just like you say!! the elizabeth thing is like an observed phenomenon and I esp find it interesting that the captain of the dutchman curse has this strong connection to love where I'd argue love is sirt of what's supposed to keep the captain tied to the mortal world in a sense?? also really neat that barbossa's curse has the "I feel nothing" aspect to it in combination with the unable to die, as well as love and death having a certain connection in media like historically there's really so much to be done with this concept so I'd love to hear more from you regarding it!! I like just woke up so sorry for rambling but anon you say you're no good w media analysis and I just wanna take this moment to say that a) you obviously have a sense for it and b) this is how you get better at it like do exactly this find a reoccurring motif and inspect it, see where it leads you!! I really value media literacy and I'd argue it's definitely a learned skill so I just wanna like encourage you and anyone who reads this who might find analysis a bit daunting to give it a shot. I think potc especially is really good as a starting point if you wanna get into it because it's not The most complex thing in the world like it's still a kids movie but it does have a lot of stuff going on without it being like overwhelming I guess the word is???

oh hi best friend welcome to 2018. the issue with dbh isn't that there are three stories which converge, the issue is that he was like hey what if we made Markus Martin Luther king Jesus jr? so here are MY 0:) ideas to answer the question "what could have made it work" which is basically Markus is simply Jesus. bc I honestly think the Connor and kara stories are solid if a little below their potential. but to make it work Markus would have to be totally different. ergo

good version:

Markus is simply Jesus. he even has a dark night of the soul/temptation in the desert/garden of gethsemane (thinking when he goes to see carl's grave) (this is good-ending based). in this way we could simply do the fucking bible. for example Markus decides to heal his jericho disciples (perhaps he can do this with a touch and it's a miracle would be cool) AND then when they go to free the androids at cyberlife instead of pressing x to black power fist symbol you can turn over some tables in the agora. and instead of this being a declaration of war that leads directly to the bad ending it just causes a manhunt for Markus WHICH !!!! twink Pontius pilate would spearhead in a more concentrated and direct way. if you dont turn over the tables in the agora (whatever that looks like) and keep it 100% peaceful the more CONCENTRATED manhunt should happen anyway. but they key word is MANHUNT, the focus is Markus Robot Jesus.

Markus goes around converting people without doing the Obama wave but rather by healing the sick and helping the poor and whatever. more of a one on one connection instead of army recruitment. it takes more time and effort to wake androids up.

north who is literally already a former sex worker and literally already canon Mary Magdalene remains the more revolution-minded one and at one point you do have to agree with her methods/defend yourselves in order to get the good ending. the love story is more nuanced and involves some act of service similar to the foot washing which is surprising bc of how tough she is

Markus could get CAPTURED!!!!!!!!!!!!! by twink Pontius pilate duh. I think there's a cool version where Markus is questioned by hank and Connor and there's a decision to let him go or not based on how youve been playing Connor and hank

religious imagery ie lights and shadows falling on Markus like a halo/if simon dies it's reminiscent of st Sebastian/markus might catch a bullet with his hand = blue blood stigmata

Markus should be martyred in the "true" ending. knock knock hello hes robot jesus. either that or I really like that thing with simon/north giving him their heart. or it would be cool if he was martyred and then his heart became a reliquary or something. but that would be really satisfying to me honestly. esp cuz he already did the dead for 3 days thing in the actual game and that's one of my favorite parts

I can't remember if ra9 is ever like meaningfully explained in a different run but everyone should be like wow ra9 is Markus but it turns out ra9 is no one and intelligent life simply inherently believes in The Higher Power of Love in the universe and Markus is simply a good person who happens to embody good values

ambiguous version: I think Markus can start an all out crusade from the jump or go into it at any point. and then I think not necessarily everyone dies but it does bring about an apocalypse in the worst version that leads to a new world having to be built after mass destruction. but instead of the moral being peaceful protest is the only answer it's more nuanced and there IS hope at the end for some peace

bad version: power hungry Markus where he is Anakin Skywalker antichrist and we get grotesque android builds that are like the beasts and whatever. full book of revelation. pale horse rk900. a-bomb wipes out humanity but not androids baby! this could be triggered by Markus choosing revenge after simon/north is hit by a bullet meant for markus persnaps.

again I think the way the stories converge is sick and I think Connor and kara are pretty solid though not up to their full potential I can't remember if I already said that. the point is more hubcap halos and less of whatever the fuck all of that was

hello I was the anon who left you the (4/4) messages about dreading Conrad slander haha anyways just wanted to say I love your response! Especially the part about how the different loves belly has with the boys is like art/you’re supposed to feel something!! that’s how I felt reading the books :) anyways just wanted to come back and ask how you felt about this love at the end of s1 to me it’s THEE belly Conrad song but more so for book three? For me I feel like wildest dreams playing there would’ve been so fitting especially knowing what happens in the very next book and it fits with the misunderstood side of Conrad that everyone has!! (Although Tbh I feel like JH mixed a lot of the entire series esp book 3 into the first season) nonetheless I hope they can reuse this love for s3 (if we get book3 in s3) bc it’s just so perfect for them 🥹 side note: I wish the BC ending had better build up bc they didn’t really address when (or even “if” I suppose since they could go that route) she left jere it was just kinda sudden that she was with Conrad lol I mean I’m happy as a BC shipper but the pacing was whack in that last episode I felt like the show just needed like one more or maybe just an extra 10 mins to give us a bit more build up to the final scene of them

um yes, I loved that This Love played over that final scene for them! Especially the part of the song that starts playing- "tossing, turning struggled through the night with someone new, and I could go on and on...lantern burning flickered in my mind, only you, but you were still gone...been losing grip on sinking ships, you showed up just in time" can we take a moment to appreciate how that last line about losing grip and you showed up just in time is perfect for Conrad in that moment??? And "struggled through the night with someone new" flawless song choice. But I also love how it works with the entire relationship and journey through all of the books! The way they each let the other go but always find their way back to each other...I love it. Also the lyrics "when you're young you just run but you come back to what you need" and "this love is glowing in the dark" I just love for Belly and Conrad. I think it was the perfect song for that moment! Although I was still recovering from The Way I Loved You and everyone crying a scene prior so the first watch through of it I was going through it by the time This Love came on lol. I agree it would be so nice to see that song or Lover be used again later on. Like a reprise.

In regards to the last scene pacing-wise...I agree. It was wack af. I loved it, I loved how similar it was to that moment in the book and I was thrilled they ended up together but it was weird. Like they just slapped it on. We went from crying and the dinner scene to the next morning on the beach. I at least wanted to see her walking out there, or being asked to go look for him, and some kind of conversation or knowing shared look between her and Jeremiah. something to wrap it and make it make more sense. In the book she goes out there looking for him because after spending the night with Jere and THAT scene with Conrad as she leaves Jere's room, they don't know where Conrad is and she immediately knows where to find him, and I would have loved to see that on screen. I think she wasn't officially dating Jere (she told Steven something about deciding who she dates, but she and Jeremiah never used that word. and there was a huge emphasis on Steven and Shayla having a big convo about being exclusive and how the "cheating" wasn't really cheating bc of that, I'm convinced the point of that was to show they're the only ones who are *actually* dating). And the final scene was definitely the morning after the ball, the sun was out and Conrad was still in his suit although Belly had changed, it reminded me of the scene at the end of the first episode when she talked to him on the beach in the morning and told him he can't smoke if she can't smoke (and then she missed Cam's boat bc of that!!!). I really liked that parallel. The idea that they both know to find each other on the beach.

Idk how a conversation between Belly and Jeremiah would have looked after the ball and all of THAT though..."hey jere, thanks for being my escort, I appreciate and had a great time even though you only did the escort dance you (apparently) choreographed and then disappeared at the part that was most important to me, leaving me feeling humiliated in front of everyone and thankfully Conrad stepped in to save the day but then you reappeared and punched your brother humiliating the entire family in front of everyone at the ball so...yeah it was great and all but I will always be in love with Conrad" it's gonna be sooo awkward whenever it does happen in s2 and I am here for the drama.

ALSO ALSO- I have always loved the idea of Wildest Dreams for them and when Jenny first teased Taylor Swift songs in the show I was convinced it was that one! "He's so tall and handsome as hell, he's so bad but he does it so well" are you kidding me??? that was written for Conrad. It would so perfectly heartbreaking if they play Wildest Dreams over the scene at the end of the third book where Conrad is giving her the necklace and saying goodbye, as he kisses her on the cheek and leaves...it would really be beautiful for that moment as the audience is left to wonder for a few minutes if this is it between them, if they'll see each other again. @ Jenny Han are you taking notes????

in-depth reasoning why i picked those songs in particular under the cut

equation to finding polyphia via ytube algorithm:

synth/eurorack/producer ytube + anime ost and rock covers of those osts = twitch episode of herman li from dragonforce talking about "playing god"

clicked the vid, the intro to the song blew my metaphorical nuts clean off

bc of the way i listen to music, non-stop looping from sun-tues until i finished typing my proposal document

with these songs, you can hear their evolution from super technical prog metalcore (more metal than mathrock, more alternative influences) to what they are today.

old stuff, super super quintessential prog and math. noodling on, exploring but not much direction, interesting but ultimately unmemorable. "impassion" is the strongest of the old ep that took an idea and developed it to an end.

"envision" is super metalcore, but i like it. starting to see them fuck around with tempo and time signatures as they feel like it, rather than following a formula even during exploration.

of the muse album, this is the foreshadowing of what's to come. adding to the genre, experimenting and developing musical ideas more. i find that the most developed of the bunch are "aviator", "jungle", and "james franco"

renaissance album wasn't a big evolution since muse. but the biggest change is not just the focus on technical playing, they start messing with production. composition, mixing. really feels like their pondering what is their style. "nightmare", "storm", "bittersweet", "paradise", "amour", and "euphoria" all had some central musical idea and stuck with them; and despite being different it's more like a commentary on their style such that pick one to enjoy. they've def chilled out more by the end of this album and even the songs seem to feel like they know what direction they want to explore next.

the most hated ep YO. they're coming. really dialing in on that focus and pointed flex of their technique, rather than a scattered showing. the whole fucking ep is amazing, but standouts are "icronic", "goose", and "40 oz". you can tell they're getting comfortable with where they stand and what they do. the technical nature of their playing is more understated, with stronger melodic ideas, and you get some memorable riffs and licks.

new levels new devils HERE WE GO. verm bf thinks this is the best album, but i love the style of the new one too much to agree (getting there next). can't really avoid trap and hiphop this day and age, so why not ingest it? that influence starts coming in, and rather than a mashup or a remix, it is borrowing that influence to give this "if you know you know" stage for their musical skill and technique to Flex. no more getting lost in the sauce like prog metalcore. G.O.A.T IS FUCKING GOAT IF YOU READ MY TAGS IN THE LAST POST

look but don't touch is both more trap and metal at the same time. i find it interesting bc it's loud like a lot of older styles of rock, but it doesn't feel in your face. and the fact they chose to wind the song down at the end w vocals shows they know what they want to do and they'll just fucking do it. i can respect that

remember that you will die I love spanish guitar and latin style, holy fucking shit aaaaaa, that bossa nova in there is fucking 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 "genesis" is so funky, i feel like this is a b-side to a persona game ost lmao. "playing god" sucked me off and gave me a kiss that's how fucking good it was to listen to holy shit i want to explode!!! abso-fucking-lutely a flex with the playing, the bassline and drums are so fucking immaculate keeping the bounce without turning it heavy. god plays that song. "riverie" brought back the howls from "g.o.a.t." and you really see them come into playing and producing. "neurotica" is a bit lighter and just super cute and fun. "chimera" with that bossa nova in the middle YUH, "bloodbath" w deftone's moreno, more metal but without the heavy dissonance of deftones. and "ego death" is as cleanly as you can lay it out: a juxtaposition of one of the greats vs new talent

i really can't wait to see what they do next, bc even if it's not exactly to my taste, i feel like it'll at least be interesting.
