I’ll try to keep this brief. My husband’s family is large and complicated. They all live in his home state, a nine hour drive away. He works a lot (nowadays, he has three jobs) which makes traveling complicated. Almost every holiday involves some kind of drama, and this has been true since I met him. Several years ago, his step-sister died tragically and unexpectedly, leaving her two daughters in the care of a problematic father who has made visitation difficult for the rest of the family. For this reason, they scheduled their Christmas get-together for Dec. 16th, when the neices would be legally mandated to be at grandma and grandpa’s (husband’s father and step-mom).

Like I said, he’s working 3 jobs. Meanwhile I took 5 classes going back to college to get my undergrad this year. I’m also 8-9 weeks pregnant (though we haven’t announced this to most of his family yet) and I’m experiencing serious fatigue and nausea. We thought we’d triple checked that our schedules were open, but I mean… we’re stupid busy right now and something must have fallen through. He’s clear to go, but I have a final exam on the day of the get-together. One of those big high-security university finals with assigned seats and bubble sheets. Not easy to reschedule. So I’m like, okay, go without me, we’ll FaceTime, it’ll be fine.

Apparently not. The response from my husband (and now his sister) has been accusatory and (I feel) out of proportion. His sister’s reaction: “we might as well cancel everything.” It’s been repeatedly suggested that I beg my professor for my final to be rescheduled, but I don’t know how to ask for a different test date because of a family Christmas party happening more than a week before Christmas? I’m not especially close to this side of my husband’s family, so I don’t understand why my physical absence would be such a devastating blow.

tl;dr - I have not asked to reschedule my final exam, and I don’t know if it would be appropriate to do so. I’m not trying to diminish any family relationships, in fact I encourage him to go alone and do a video call after my test. Am I the asshole?

i keep seeing people—both here and on twitter—who compare lex luthor to real world Evil Billionaires like elon musk or donald trump, or who say they want lex to act more like them (esp elon, he gets brought up in relation to lex a lot), and it just makes it very clear to me that those people don’t seem to realize that lex is a fully realized character and that an elon musk proxy would actually make a very boring comic book villain.

lex’s entire character—no matter which iteration of him you look at—hinges on him being intelligent. even when stripped of his power and resources, he still manages to be a formidable threat, and when something genuinely threatens the earth, he’s always willing to put his life on the line and ally with the heroes.

like. those are traits that are fundamentally incompatible with him using him as an elon musk proxy, and frankly, i think rewriting lex just to be a rich idiot who shills nfts would be incredibly uninteresting.
