From my listing on Poshmark: “WoodFired Footed Dish. Polka Dot exterior design & Beautiful Green Glaze inside.
This ceramic piece can be used or displayed. It makes a nice soy dish for dipping sushi or salt pinch pot,
Made by hand in the Minge Sota (sp?) and wabi sabi styles- drawing from both ancient & modern inspirations & fired in an Anagama Kiln. The exterior design is a multi step decorating process using wax resist & slips . One slip is a light yellow hue, the other dark. Black/blue. The darker side has wood ash on it from this unique & old Japanese firing style. The clay body is stoneware. The artist/potter chop mark is missing. But its made by ARTjgm.
It can go in the dishwasher & microwave but do not put it on the stove/oven - do not thermal shock it. 1 tiny chip on the top edge, but don’t consider it a flaw by the nature of this aesthetic style. Natural variations in surface and form from the hand forming & special firing processes.
This piece has some flashing’. Flashing is a desirable effect from atmospheric firing, leaving unique pink, red, orange, yellow hues. This kiln goes to over 2400 degrees Fahrenheit. It’s a very labor intensive firing process which increases its cost & value.
Comes in a box for safekeeping or gifting.
I am downsizing & selling my art collection. This was a part of my collection. Its about 3.75 x 2 inches.
I will float box it - proper way to ship breakables. “

Catherine White Moon Vase
As a young potter, I was inspired by pilgrim flasks, first encountering those made by Bernard Leach. Searching for the seeds of this idea, I found resonant historical Korean and Chinese forms. My training had focused on bowls as the basis of throwing, so I thought of these shapes as the combination of two bowls turned on edge with an added rim and foot. As I began wood firing, I was attracted to broad, shallow surfaces as a canvas for ash deposits. Though not as spherical as a traditional Korean moon jar, I have called my flatter forms “moon vases” for their moon-like allusions. We built our anagama in 1996 and for 25 years I have made these shapes, altering the feeling by exploring variations in scale, texture, rims, edges, and feet. Each firing has its own nuances, and each series of moon vases has its own focus.

We may be biased, but this has been one of the greatest wood fires yet! The work that is coming out of the kiln today is phenomenal. #woodfiring #woodfiredpottery #pottery #anagama #anagamakiln (at Eastern Shore Art Center) https://www.instagram.com/p/Ckv36iOORmZ/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Big-A, Peter Voulkos, 1990, Minneapolis Institute of Art: Decorative Arts, Textiles and Sculpture
massive jar with bell-shaped body and large neck; slashes, gouges, holes and misshapen areas throughout; brown and tan glaze Big-A represents Peter Voulkos at his most physical. One of his stacks, so named because he literally stacks thrown cylinders atop one another, it is made from approximately two hundred and fifty pounds of clay. Like his plates, the stacks are thick, irregular, and visibly manipulated; here Voulkos claws through the leather-hard clay to create vertical and diagonal lines from top to bottom. The massive walls give the stacks more stability to survive the long days of high temperatures in the wood fired tunnel kiln (anagama in Japanese), where they emerge with their distinctive ash-fired glaze. Voulkos was introduced to wood-firing in 1978, when Peter Callas, a young artist who had studied the ancient technique in Japan, approached him about a collaboration, sensing that Voulkos's rugged forms were well-suited to earthy ash-fired glazes. After experiencing the resulting serendipity of the process--moderated by Callas's knowledge about placement and firing--Voulkos preferred the wood-fire technique for his later works. Size: 34 x 18 x 19 in. (86.4 x 45.7 x 48.3 cm) Medium: Wood-fired stoneware

made it to the other side
The bulk of the making scramble is over, and I survived 😂 Learned a little bit about myself, learned I can get shit done when I really set my mind to it. Now, the next two days I can leisurely make some last minute ideas, and sneak ‘em into the kiln before we seal her up on Tuesday. The work I’m putting in this kiln is piggy backing off of ideas and discoveries from the last firing, as well as knowledge gained from the Woodfire NC conference. I’m excited too see if any of these results are repeatable, as I’m looking to discover my woodfire aesthetic 🤞

Untitled, Toshiko Takaezu, 1980, Art Institute of Chicago: American Art
Toshiko Takaezu studied at Michigan’s Cranbrook Academy of Art with ceramic pioneer Maija Grotell (see 1964.527). Takaezu’s experiments with traditional, practical shapes resulted in her elongated, bulbous sculptures with no openings. The artist finished these unconventional forms with equally novel firing methods. She fired this piece in an anagama kiln; such Asian wood kilns produce extreme temperatures and thus chance imperfections, which appealed to Takaezu’s Zen approach to artistic creation. The iridescent swirls and shimmering golden tones produced by the anagama firing lead the eye over the body of the work. Gift of Toshiko Takaezu Size: 47 × 20.3 cm (18 1/2 × 8 in.) Medium: Anagama-fired stoneware

The back stack of our anagama is loaded . Firing the anagama is like steering a big ship. It is like taking a trip— it requires packing and planning and a leap of faith — each time we do it we find ourselves in new waters. We have to make new maps, consult the old records, invent an itinerary and improvise based on materials, people and weather. It is always an adventure. And I am always grateful for my friends and family who support and enjoy this endeavor.
