The Pale Horse, Natalia Sergeevna Goncharova, 1914, Minneapolis Institute of Art: Prints and Drawings
Plate 12 Russian artists responded to the outbreak of war in Central Europe in 1914 in paintings and works on paper. In her portfolio "Mystical Images of War," Natalia Goncharova depicts all aspects of armed conflict past and present, ranging from the archangel Michael riding triumphantly through flames on horseback to celestial beings observing fighter planes in combat. She realizes her apocalyptic vision of war in this powerful portfolio of masterful lithographs formally inspired by the solemn gravity of traditional Russian icons and the dynamism of contemporary Futurist painting. She successfully draws upon these diverse stylistic influences to express the horror of armed conflict. Size: 12 5/8 x 9 1/2 in. (32.07 x 24.13 cm) (image) 12 3/4 x 9 3/4 in. (32.39 x 24.77 cm) (sheet) Medium: Lithograph

Sunflower III, Joan Mitchell, 1972, Minneapolis Institute of Art: Prints and Drawings
A leading American painter and printmaker, Joan Mitchell was a contemporary of Helen Frankenthaler and Robert Motherwell and was widely regarded as one of the supreme colorists of the abstract expressionist movement. Her lyrical abstractions are generally based on actual physcial entities, such as landscapes or studies of flowers. Commenting on Mitchell's art, E.C. Goossen wrote: "The Abstract Expressionist generation out of which she came was forever searching for abstract subject matter with transcendent implications, even though it professed to believe that art was its own message... But unlike those contemporary painters who 'discover' their subject in the process of painting, Mitchell works from an idea and builds on it." Mitchell spent the last thirty years of her life in Paris, where she died in 1992. Size: 26 11/16 x 17 1/8 in. (67.79 x 43.5 cm) (plate) 35 7/8 x 24 7/8 in. (91.12 x 63.18 cm) (sheet) Medium: Color aquatint and etching

Shrine head, 12th-14th century, Minneapolis Institute of Art: Art of Africa and the Americas
This head’s tranquil demeanor and introspective gaze express what the Yoruba peoples consider a person’s inner virtue. It is a memorial portrait head that comes from the royal city of Ife in western Nigeria, a center of economic, religious, and political power between 1100 and 1400. Ancient Yoruba artists made heads in bronze and terracotta that were part of complete figures or, like here, freestanding. The vertical lines covering the woman’s face either reflect the traditional scarification designs used in the Ife kingdom or represent the veil worn by members of the royal family. Size: 12 1/4 x 5 3/4 x 7 1/4 in. (31.1 x 14.6 x 18.4 cm) Medium: Terracotta
