#amelie west end

At the kitchen table I once folded a paper boat and floated it down the tabletop Halfway to my mother It sailed into the coffee cup Where she crumpled it up Threw it away And told me to stop So the little boat's trying to get to her But the table is deep and wide The thing that I learned from my mother Was to see the great divide
Inspired by the London Cast of Amelie the musical, here's a drawing + lyrics from 'Halfway'! I've been toying around with the idea of making a series of musical theatre sketches for a while but never got around to it until a few weeks ago. More to come :)

WWII Propaganda but make it Narnia bc it just felt right
Really digging the West End production of The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe right now; looks like a really fun show! V jealous of you people in England rn who can see it bc I live not there
This mini project was inspired by its costumes, which nicely blend animal characteristics with WWII-era garb and uniforms (if you dont know what im talking about, do look it up bc its v cool). There's an overall vibe that the worlds bleed into each other so I thought it was a fun idea to explore the Narnian equivalent of wartime propaganda; please enjoy :^)

EP112 Hex and Violins w/ Manoel Felciano! (Broadway!)
Attend the tale of Ma-no-el! Because this week, we're joined by Broadway's Heartthrob-turned-Daddy (his words) Manoel Felciano! (Say what?! *faints*) In this week's hilariously charming episode, the star of 2005's Sweeney Todd has a close shave with Amaranthe's album 'Helix', before we get up to mischief with 'Amelie' with the original Broadway recording. Plus, we chat scene partners, the Oz debate continues, puddle-jumping makes a return, we discuss Swedish music education, and AW investigates whether or not Manoel is in possession of a possessed violin- DUN-DUN-DUNNNN! Plus heaps more!!!
This episode is dedicated to Ryan Touzell. RIP. https://open.spotify.com/artist/4otAPsjJapGpfHLbcM5gmP?si=m0eEa-7vRE6eV_8_4X_Dag

Israel's Chief Rabbis David Lau (left) and Yitzhak Yosef (center) sell the state's chametz in Jerusalem ahead of Passover, April 21, 2024. Photo by Chaim Goldberg/Flash90.
Arab Israeli buys state’s chametz for $150b Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich authorized the chief rabbis to carry out the transaction.
At the instruction of Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, the chief rabbis of Israel sold all of the chametz (leavened foods) owned by the state to an Arab Israeli businessman in accordance with the laws of Passover, the Chief Rabbinate of Israel announced on Sunday. Halachah, or Jewish religious law, forbids the eating or ownership of leavened products during the seven-day holiday, in keeping with the story of the Exodus from Egypt. Passover starts at sundown on Monday. The sale has “halachic and legal validity and allows the citizens of Israel to properly observe the commandments of Passover without the fear of chametz remaining in their possession,” the Chief Rabbinate said. Hussein Jabar, 64, from the Arab town of Abu Ghosh west of Israel’s capital, paid a deposit of 20,000 shekels ($5,300). After the holiday, he will be offered the possibility of completing the transaction, which has an estimated total value of $150 billion. “The ceremony took place at 11 a.m. at the Chief Rabbinate of Israel in Jerusalem. It felt very dignified. It made me proud and it was moving,” Jabar told JNS on Sunday night after signing the agreement. “I put together a team of experts in the food and catering business from Abu Ghosh. We are about 10 people, and we designed a plan to raise the money. Hopefully, this year, we will make it happen,” Jabar said.

If Jabar and his partners fail to raise the total amount before the end of Passover on the night of April 30, the ownership will revert to the state. Jabar took over the task some 28 years ago after the previous buyer, also from Abu Ghosh, was relieved of his duties when it was discovered his maternal grandmother may have been Jewish. At Jerusalem’s Ramada Hotel, where he has worked for about 40 years, Jabar met with Rabbi Yisrael Meir Lau, then-Ashkenazi chief rabbi of Israel, who suggested he take the job. Jabar said on Sunday, “My family is really happy for me. They love it. By doing this, I feel that I am creating a connection between the Jews and the Arabs in Israel, bridging the gap between both communities.” As Israel enters its seventh month of war in Gaza triggered by Hamas’s Oct. 7 massacre of some 1,200 people, Jabar expressed a wish for quieter times. “I hope we will soon have peace and only good news for everyone. I wish the people of Israel a kosher and happy Passover,” he told JNS. As part of the ceremony, Smotrich authorized the chief rabbis, Rabbi David Lau and Rabbi Yitzhak Yosef, to carry out the transaction on behalf of the state. “Since the holiday of Simchat Torah, when the terrible disaster happened to us, we have been praying for the success of the security forces,” said Yosef. “We need to continue to pray for our soldiers, who give their lives and fight on the northern and southern borders and wherever they are.” Lau said, “Our neighbors want to destroy us and make us forget the joy, but the entire nation of Israel has stood up to fight for its home, for our essence as the Jewish people— we are not ready to give up on that.

thinking abt the absolutely fucked relationship of Sam - Bridget - Amelie. cloth mother and wire mother except they're both avatars of a greater thing and lying to you, the child, about being separate entities so you spend your whole life forming distinct relationships with each of them, neatly segmenting your views as cloth mother: good and kind if distant and rarely seen, wire mother: manipulative and controlling and overbearing.
and at some point cloth mother Amelie fucks off west and wire mother gets so bad you leave and suppress as many memories of her as you possibly can, and it's been years but wire mother Bridget is dying and she makes you bear the burden of her weight one more time, insisting that she loves you even as she backs you into corners and the worst part is you agree to do it because of Amelie! not Bridget, of course not Bridget after what she's done, but you owe something to Amelie at least, so you do it, and let yourself be manipulated into months of backbreaking work.
and then at the end of all that, she finally reveals to you that they're the same person. Amelie and Bridget were the same person, all that time, tormenting you in one form to comfort you in another. cloth mother and wire mother aren't real, and you are a monkey and she is the human experimenting on you. she controlled your whole life and you literally didn't even know the half of it. i mean, with repatriation, she literally decides when you can die! so you've never been free of her and you never will be free of her for the rest of your life even if she dies or you never speak to her again because she's already made her mark on you at the molecular level.
and then she hands you a gun and says 'judge me.'
i would go insane. i AM going insane just from witnessing it, never mind participating in it.

A lot of ppl talk about “this didn’t need to be made into a musical” BUT what about “this works so well as a musical” musicals??
My personal pick is Amelie (esp west end) bc for a story about a woman who can’t communicate ‘normally’ and has trouble speaking her feelings and is also in her own little world, the ‘if you can’t speak, then sing’ adage of MT works SO WELL.
