I've decided to start this year's coining sesion by adding to more terms to my "Let's put a name to every specific type of outherine experience" list.

Today is the turn of "Distinct, but comparable to pre-existent gender qualities" and I'll focus on those gender qualities that while being their own thing, they can be comparable to midbinary qualities.

Umbininity

Umbine genders and qualities are those that, while distinct and different from femininity, masculinity, androgyny, epicenity and femmulinity, still can be comparable to those concepts.

Examples of umbine qualities could be:

Ainulinity (when it's seen as a distinct quality) - A quality comparable to masculinity.

Aineminity (when it's seen as a distinct quality ) - A quality comparable to femininity.

Altraeninity - A quality comparable to androgyny. Made with genders defined by "pure androgyny" or "third gender androgyny" in mind.

Ambigui(ni)ty - Can be considered umbine, because it's a distinct gender quality that's comparable to both androgyny and epicenity

I also consider that, when viewed as a distinct quality and not just as a term for femme manhood, effemininity/effeminacy could be considered umbine, because it's "distinct, but comparable to both femininity and masculinity". At least, that's how I define it for myself.

Umbine comes from "umbe" an obsolete English preposition meaning "aroud, about. After"

I haven't made a flag yet.

P.S: I'm thinking on also making a label for outherine qualities that can be comparable to non-outherine abinary qualities, but I haven't think of a term yet.

I might create subsets in the future to classify umbine qualities further depending on the midbinary quality they can be comparable to. But for now, there's just this one generic term.

It’s funny how different the cast thinks of the show and characters compared to the fans because I don’t know how many viewers would have that opinion with how people talk about Claudia, Louis and and lestat in the final episode. Do you think the writers intended for it to be more ambiguous than it turned out on screen?

Mhhhh. I'm not sure they think so different of it. Or, at least than some fans think of it. Some other fans of course... ^^

So... They think "different" of it than what we were shown.

Which brings us back to the "tale" - and the fact, that they did different versions, and then the director? producer? decided what would be put in (like here, wrt the broadcasting):

There were a lot of micro-rewrites that were happening as the scripts were coming out, and I knew this was the plot twist from quite early on because I needed to know when Lestat knew. We did multiple options, and usually they put in that I did know.

"They" obviously know the story they want to tell. They have spoken about it. They know Memory is a Monster, and that there was "tinkering". Etc. The writers, directors and producers decide how they tell it. I'm not going to go into all the interviews referring to the tale being a tale and being influenced now (I only answered an ask with a few links yesterday^^), so just wrt to the final episode...

I do think that it actually shows a lot of the things Bailey was referring to there.

The hurt in the balcony scene, the weaponizing of the "my love". The usage of "idiot" as a weapon, thrown and hurled back. The betrayal through Antoinette not being dead. The desperation and wanting that love and being unable to get it. The need to be free, and to utilize anything to reach it. Who they are killing at their feast.

*shrugs*

For me that came across :)

But then I come from the books, and I... have a different view on the characters as show-only viewers obviously do, because I know what is to come still. The show does its own thing... but then again not really, it's all "there", they reach all the important bits, and nothing we know of season 2 yet indicates anything different to me here... and it is always good to remember that we have "only" seen a very specific tale right now^^, told for a purpose. A purpose we do not know yet.

The tale will shift in (the end of) season 2 - and the show will shift with it.

So no, I actually don't think they see them that differently... just that the "show view" (to call it such) is a rather restricted one right now.

If the writers intended it to be more ambiguous? Maybe.

But then AMC had to tone down Rolin's initial script re Lestat iirc, so who knows just how many of those "micro-rewrites" pertain to which direction, character-wise. We know these writers don't pull their punches, right *laughs*

Chas looks good in black.

It was an unwarranted thought that had John feeling guilty as soon as it happened. Only John could look at a friend and decide that grief was a good look on them.

The day that Queenie had died, Chas couldn’t have looked more relieved. But here, huddled in close proximity to Constantine, he wore a puzzling sort of anguish. Maybe out of obligation if nothing else. Here, catching a break from the small group around Queenie’s casket, it leans more towards the guilty side of things than the strange sombre look he wore during the eulogy.

John couldn’t imagine the “proper” look one is supposed to have during their mothers funeral. He was too young to remember his own, after all. Whatever it is, Chas is making a proper go of it, however undeserving she was.

When Chas dragged John away with him, John was expecting a conversation. Chas elects to stare instead. He stares at the casket, and then back at John, and his gaze softens. It’s melancholy again, with a tinge of affection, and John has no idea what to do with that.

“You know what’s funny?” Chas finally murmurs. John chuckles, sardonic. Shakes his head.

“I’m still upset. I’m glad she’s gone but I’m still upset.” His lip twitches down a notch, “Isn’t that stupid?” He doesn’t sound like he’s looking for a response.

“Your mother was a cunt, Chas.”

“Yeah, but she was still my mum.” John thinks about his own father then, and the child that was still desperately clawing for his affection. Some part of him still, that craved what he never deserved. They were hopeless bastards, the two of them.

“Yeah. I get it.”

They’re silent again, and John tries not to squirm with it. The air was too heavy. Chas breathed in a lungful of it;

“I know this magic stuff is important to you.” No. ‘But John, I…” He sighs, looking back at the casket now being lowered into the ground. The first throw of dirt goes on, and John feels like he’s suffocating.

“I’m not like your mum, Chas.,” John spits, feeling offended at even the implication. He hates even more; the idea that Chas could be afraid of him.

“Never said you are.”

“Then what are you saying?”

“Just, Johnny, do you have to keep doing this?” His eyes are so earnest it’s painful, and John finds himself stumbling for a cigarette, “It’s not too late to stop. We could go anywhere, away from here.”

“You sound ridiculous, mate.” The sharp slice of the shovel continued monotonously in the background. He flicks open his lighter.

“If you keep doing this, what will happen to you?” His voice is colder now, John feels cold.

“Where did this come from?”

“How about the body lying in a fucking casket?”

“You just remember, mate, that you wanted her dead more than anyone.”

“John-”

“I reckon you owe me, even. Without me, you’d still be stuck with her. Maybe you’d be dead.”

“That’s not what this is about and you know it.,” He does.

“Yeah? Then tell me, mate. Where would we go? What would we do?” He takes a fitful puff, nearly chokes on it.

“Anywhere. Anything.”

“Right, so you have all this figured out then.” He chuckles sarcastically, each breath accentuated by a puff of smoke.

“No, but John. If this continues..” Chas looks almost desperate, then he looks angry.

“And are you going to leave if I don’t?” He tries to play it off as sharp, takes another drag to aid himself. Chas’ expression cracks slightly,

“You know I won’t.,” He sounds sad when he says it, and Chas so rarely sounds that way out in the open like this.

“You don’t have to be involved.” John attempts to reassure him, but he falls short of the mark. There’s more that he wants to say. And as always, he can’t. Chas huffs, running a hand through his hair,

“Just hand me a bloody cigarette.”

He does.

I noticed in CraftyCorn’s little character card there weren’t any pronouns…

It’s giving lowkey NB if you ask me. Like anything referring to Crafty should be phrased in such a way no pronouns are ever needed. Going completely unnoticed by transphobes with their biases & assumptions but leaving kids with a little bit of representation even if they only realize it when they’re older
