A long, very GrimmUlqui-flavored post

Got inspired by this post, but I want to illustrate it with manga panels and also share some of my thoughts and impressions.

I've read many grimmulqui fanfics and I noticed that authors often portray their relationship similarly. If we talk about Ulquiorra's portrayal, he's always really rude towards Grimmjow and doesn't hesitate to insult him, calling him any degrading names you could think about, of course, including his favorite word "trash". And that's not a hate nor a critique of the authors, but I always thought that it was kinda a bit too much and not really accurate.

At first, I thought that way because Ulquiorra never called Grimmjow "trash" in canon (moreover, he didn't call "trash" any arrancar, only humans, like Ichigo, Orihime, Chad, Tatsuki). But it seems Ulquiorra never insulted Grimmjow AT ALL, which HE DID with other arrancars and with pretty much everyone, except Aizen.

Yammy was his companion when we saw Ulquiorra for the first time, and it's obvious that they weren't friends because Ulquiorra didn't believe in such things as friendship or bonds between two individuals. But at least they weren't antagonistic towards each other. Yammy was willing to follow Ulquiorra's orders, never questioning Cuatro's decisions and respecting him.

However, it seems that this feeling wasn't mutual. Not that Ulquiorra hated him, but he expressed constant annoyance with almost all of Yammy's words or actions and didn't hesitate to show it.

"Stop complaining", "idiot", "fool", "your tantrums", rolling eyes. It's really a lot of insults for such a short interaction between them.

Of course, you could say that's natural, given the difference in their personalities. But then we get Grimmjow's first appearance, and Ulquiorra's reactions were really, really different.

Grimmjow isn't Yammy. He isn't respectful or obedient; he hardly showed any respect towards Aizen and certainly didn't hesitate to disrespect his fellow Espadas. Ulquiorra had all the reasons to be much more annoyed with him than he was with Yammy, but what do we actually see? He didn't react at all.

He was calm and collected, patiently answering Grimmjow's questions, and wasn't showing even an ounce of annoyance.

No rolled eyes, nothing. Despite the fact that Grimmjow interrupted his report and literally called Ulquiorra weak, TWICE. It could be explained that he didn't want to provoke Grimmjow and be involved in a stupid fight in front of Aizen, but he was silent even in his thoughts.

Next time we see them interacting, we get a famous moment that inspired a lot of shippers, and no wonder why.

Ulquiorra needed to stop Grimmjow from releasing his zanpakuto, and once again, he was perfectly calm, didn't do anything to harm Grimmjow (contrary to the way how he stopped Yammy), didn't call him "idiot" or "trash". Just one careful touch, and that's all.

Grimmjow and Yammy were the only arrancars with whom Ulquiorra interacted multiple times, having actual conversations. But there was also Nnoitra, who talked with him once about Orihime, and Ulquiorra treated him differently compared to both Grimmjow and Yammy. He mostly seemed calm, but I would say that Nnoitra's words irritated him a little, and actually, even Nnoitra noticed it.

The rest of their conversation went fine, and it seemed that they separated on good terms. However, guess what? In the end, Nnoitra wasn't lucky enough to avoid being insulted by our emo when he disobeyed Aizen's orders.

Nnoitra's actions had nothing to do with Ulquiorra; he wasn't ordered to look after Chad and wasn't responsible for other Espadas' decisions. But the mere act of disobedience was enough to make Ulquiorra resort to insults. You might argue: "Of course, he reacted like that because Ulquiorra was sure that everyone should be rational and respect Aizen". But guess who else wasn't rational, who disrespected all the orders, and, unlike Nnoitra, directly put Ulquiorra at risk of failing to fulfill Aizen-sama's wishes?

Who else could it be? Of course, it was Grimmjow Jaegerjaquez. We all know that he saved Orihime from Loly and Menoly because he needed her to heal Ichigo. From Ulquiorra's perspective, he did two stupid things at once: took away the girl who was Ulquiorra's responsibility and healed the enemy whom Ulquiorra had just beaten. Certainly, those are the actions of someone with whom you should feel not just annoyed, but actually angered. But what was Ulquiorra's first reaction when he saw that Orihime was no longer in her room?

I think everyone agrees that it was much more serious than Nnoitra beating Chad, but apparently not serious enough for Ulquiorra to finally call Grimmjow the words he actually deserved to be called.

He quickly found Grimmjow, asked him the reason why he did all of that, including healing the enemy, but didn't get any satisfying answer.

In the result, Grimmjow managed to outsmart him, fully aware that otherwise Ulquiorra would take Orihime back, and he would lose his chance to beat Ichigo. However, once again, it was strange that Ulquiorra wasn't willing to confront Grimmjow or say all that he thought about his stupidity and irresponsibility— to just beat his ass and teach him a lesson. Instead, he wanted to convince him to return Orihime and peacefully part ways, without any consequences.

Isn't it a significant difference compared to his usual behavior? Fans often say that Ulquiorra didn't feel any emotions, but the manga showed multiple times that he knew how it is to experience anger and annoyance, not just with arrancars but also with humans. For some reason, only Grimmjow seemed to be his "soft spot". Despite the possible explanations that he avoided an unnecessary fight to prevent Grimmjow from becoming a huge pain in the ass, I feel that there should be something else—something that happened between those two in the past that Kubo didn't think was necessary to show us, or perhaps it lacked screen-time.

And I also don't believe that Grimmjow felt nothing but hate towards Ulquiorra; his behavior and his words hinted at something else too. From the fact that he observed Ulquiorra long enough to notice his habits to him screaming, "Ulquiorra, you're afraid to fight because we'll kill each other". It's possible to say more about it, but I will just add the link to this post; the author said it all perfectly

I know that the manga ended eight years ago, with Ulquiorra being dead even longer, but it's confirmed that Kubo didn't reveal many important things, like Rukia's true origins or Urahara and Yoruichi's backstory. These are characters more important than Ulquiorra and Grimmjow, yet, we still don't know everything about them. And no one could convince me that the GrimmUlqui dynamic wasn't supposed to be much more developed and nuanced compared to the interactions we actually got; not just "Grimm hates Ulqui and vice versa, and they want to tear each other's throats". It leaks and shows even through the smallest hints and crumbs! And it makes me want to think about all the possible scenarios, imagining a whole-ass novel with their adventures, the scenario when Grimmjow found Ulquiorra in the desert and brought him to the palace; picturing them going on missions together, and so on.

The longer this friendship went on, the bigger the affection grew on both ends. You and your fellow Espada had brewing feelings that threatened to spill over but neither of you were willing to confess. You were afraid of ruining the friendship you worked so hard to develop, while he didn't want to seem weak in front of the others. Or to himself.

After days of dodging and avoiding one another, you finally found the courage to confess. You asked Ulquiorra to meet you at your living quarters. He raises an eyebrow at the sudden request but agreed nonetheless. Later that night, while both of you were sitting on your bed, you took a deep breath and confessed your feelings. Once you were finished, a silence ensued, the Espada's expression remained unchanged. You sighed and got up to leave but he grabbed your hand, making you sit back down. "Where are you going? This conversation isn't finished." Words attempt to leave your mouth but he cuts you off.

"You may be an annoying pest that rattles my brain with your antics but you do so in a way that doesn't make me want to kill you." To the average person, this would sound bizarre and not-so-convincing but you knew he meant well. It may take some time to get comfortable with each other on this level, but you would be there to help him through it all.

The beginning of your relationship was pretty much the same as your friendship. Ulquiorra would still help you out and vice versa, but there was a slight difference. Whenever you spoke with other Arrancars, he would skilfully hide near a corner to keep an eye on you. If the person happened to be Grimmjow, Ulquiorra would stand behind you while staring him down. He isn't exactly fond of the Pantera.

While your stoic lover wasn't a man of words, he did show his care for you through acts of service. Whenever you got injured, he would berate you for being a reckless numb skull while escorting you to the medical bay within Las Noches. This type of love language also occurred in private. I was on a Naruto forum one day and somebody had a fanart of Grimmjow as their signature. I was like, "WHO is that fine man???" and the rest is history. I've loved him since like 2006 and he's the origins on my Junichi Suwabe fixation and one of my major villainfucker influences. Icon. Everything about him is so fucking cool, the god-tier design, the voice, the fights. Wow.

Pass. His design is cool but then his fight with Byakuya immediately yeeted any cred he had out the window. Also he had barely enough screentime to leave any lasting impression. Szayel Aporro Granz

I can never spell this fucker's name. Anyway, Pass. Again, his character design isn't bad but the flamboyant evil nerd thing is off-putting to me. He kind of reminds me of one of those villain Pokemon team admins you fight midway through the game.

Aaroneiro Arrururie

Pass. The only time this man jar thing is hot is when he's wearing Kaein Shiba's face. And same with the Zommari issue, you never get a sense of who he is as a character because his screentime is so limited. (Another character's surname I had to google because I forgot it.) Also he lost to Rukia.

Ew. Pass. -

Since the Espada are so hilariously divisive (half look like greek gods and the other are straight-up abominations), I'll include the ex-Espada for fun.

Luppi Atenor Pass. I'm sure the extremely androgynous look is someone's thing, but personally I like my male characters a bit more rugged. Also his personality was kind of lame and his fight with the lieutenants was nothing to write home about. Nelliel Oderschwank

PASS. I could write a literal essay on how much I dislike her, but in the interest of brevity I'll say this - her design is fantastic but that's all she's got going for her. The bitch has two personalities and both of them suck, hyperactive toddler or condescending and holier-than-thou.

Dordonii Soccacio Pass. He's so forgettable I had to google what his last name is. I don't think his design is bad but I don't really remember him except Ichigo whooped his ass and then he got drooled on by Nel.

Cirucci Sanderwicci

Smash! Goth chick solidarity ftw. It's a shame such an amazing design was given to a minor character because I love it, she's easily as pretty as Halibel but unfortunately since she had one fight and got stomped by Ishida I think the fandom forgets her. Also I like her name, it's that classic Kubo balance of being goofy but kinda cool.

Gantenbainne Mosqueda

Pass. It says something about how forgettable you are as a character when Kubo didn't even bring him back as a Mayuri zombie, instead Charlotte got revived just for being popular. (L for all Barragan's other fraccion.)

A Blissful Vacation

Day 3! Today we have a Crossover with Bleach and my other OTP Ulquihime. Last Ulquihime Week I had written a one shot eith these two ships in a Crossover and since you all liked it so much here's more. I'm also reasuing the picture I made for it since it's cute and also the banner for the Wavewave Week account so here it is in full. Hope you like!

Wavewave Week- Day 3 Crossover(Bleach AU/ IDW AU Crossover) Set 10 years after the events of 'A Different Reality'

He would never get used to an organic body. While Shockwave jumped at the chance to test his universe hopper and to see his organic friends, he was starting to question his decision.

"Lighten up, it's not so bad and we'll be finally seeing them again." Soundwave smiled in his organic form.

The blue mech was now a tall tanned skinned human male with blue long hair and red eyes.

Shockwave on the other hand was slightly shorter than him with short purple hair, pale skin and a single golden eye, the one which was missing was now covered by an eyepatch.

"I am looking forward to seeing our friends again, and it is fair we come see them instead of expecting them to always travel to our universe. Still, I don't like this form, it's uncomfortable."

The words died in his mouth as a bouncy redhead girl glomped both him and Soundwave. "You're here!"

"Orihime! It's so good to see you!" Soundwave beamed as he returned the hug.

Shockwave was pleased by his friend's affection but quickly noticed something.

"You shouldn't be glomping us when you're..."

Her weight had decreased, which likely meant she was no longer carrying a child. To confirm this he got back up and Ulquiorra was walking towards them carrying two chubby bunddles, one with black hair and pretty silver eyes and another with orange hair and green eyes.

"We really need to visit more often." Shockwave concluded.

Holding an organic newborn was like trying to deal with all of his cassettes at the same time. Baby Sora had taken to pulling on Soundwave's hair. It didn't hurt much, especially when the adorable redhead giggled as she pulled.

"Are you sure you're okay? I can take the baby back."

"No way! I wanna hold her more. We Cybertronians don't have babies."

Ulquiorra rolled his eyes but allowed him to keep his daughter for a while longer. "How's everything back there? The war is still ongoing?"

"Yeah, I think we might win soon. We've certainly made a lot of progress but some Autobots are still stubbornly refusing to back down."

The green eyed man nodded. "Even if our battle is already won there are still shinigami stubbornly denying our victory. It's mostly the noble families, they're difficult to deal with."

"Ah, it's always the rich ones, isn't it?" He said as he gently cradled Sora. The baby was no longer pulling his hair, instead she was looking at him with curious eyes.

"If she knew you were actually a robot her eyes might get even bigger." Ulquiorra teased as he took a photo of the occasion.

"That would be concerning. She has big eyes like you already. Isn't that right Sora Schiffer?"

The baby giggled as she allowed Soundwave to gently rock her to sleep. Soundwave saw hope on those big green eyes. If their friends had won a war and had been able to live peacefully for ten years now then perhaps they too would be able to do so. Victory was getting closer everyday and he intended to reach it, for those who couldn't.

"Who else was lost?" Ulquiorra asked, knowing exactly what Soundwave was feeling.

"Starscream defected. Which I feel like good riddance but he has been making difficult on us as always. Tarn got himself killed after leading a hunt we told him not to chase. Killoton is in a coma and Lovelace is still M.I.A... And as before, Shockwave's remain unrecoverable."

"You should just tell him. I can see it in your eyes. You want to be with him even if he does not remember your past."

"You're right but...." Soundwave sighed. "I don't want to burden him. Right after the Shadowplay I was told those memories were lost forever, that merely trying to make him remember could cause him to suffer processor damage and maybe shut down. I much rather rhave him healthy and calm than damaged for my selfish desires."

"I understand. We'd do anything to protect the ones we love. However, you're the one who once told me to confess my feelings to the woman, and look at us now."

He smiled at hearing his friend use the old nickname he'd given Orihime before they were even friends. What he said was true, as when they were the ones stuck in their universe he urged Ulquiorra to confess. The arrancar did so once the situation was resolved, and ten years later he was now married to the woman he loved and had two beautiful daughters with her.

"Maybe you'll never see the Shockwave you first fell in love with again, but if you still love him after all of that has happened then you should tell him."

"You're right. I'll tell him."

"Good, now let's put Sora to bed. I have plans for all of us."

"If I were on Cybertronian form not only would I not have a nose for you to pull but you'd be the size of a scraplet!"

Orihime laughed as Kokoro kept on pinching poor Shockwave's face. She took the baby back, who seemed angry that she couldn't bother the scientist anymore.

"I imagine dealing with the cassettes is the same.

"Rumble and Frenzy are equally mischievous, but Ravage and the avians don't cause any trouble. They would be good friends with your offspring if they met them."

"Well, the babies won't be universe hoping until they're a little older but I'm certain they would love to meet everyone. Kokoro is fond of you despite the pinching."

Shockwave raised an eyebrow and glanced at the baby who giggled when she saw him. He smiled back. "Very well, tiny organic. I appreciate your affections, but do not pinch me. I'm not used to having a face."

"That's something else I wanted to ask about. Have you made any progress on your recovery?"

"Other things take priority. Once the war ends I shall concentrate on that. As of now I have no returning memories, and the surgery to recover my faceplate can only be performed if we return to Cybertron. For now I stay as I am."

Orihime nodded. "You've never been curious as to why the only person you seem to trust and remember is Soundwave?"

"Yes I do wonder sometimes. He's a loyal mech and a wonderful company but it is odd he's the only thing from my past I can recall before shadowplay."

"I was thinking it's because of fate."

Shockwave knew his redhead human friend was a hopeless optimist but didn't think she'd suggest such an illogical notion.

"It may seem silly to a scientist like you but think about it. It's the same thing that happened to Ulquiorra and I.

A human, an arrancar, two completely different beings on opposite sides of a war. By all means we should've remained strangers or enemies till the conflict ended. But we didn't, and then we went to your universe and we returned, knowing well that we wanted everyone to survive, that we wanted the war to end. So we fought for that and now look at us 10 years later. If it wasn't fate who made us meet, and fall in love. Then what was it?"

She had a point. Fate seemed to have bound Ulquiorra and Orihime but would it bind him and Soundwave too or was this just a concept his original universe didn't have? Shockwave didn't care to find an answer just yet.

"Regardless of fates involvement I can tell you one thing."

"What's that?"

"I'm not wearing a green puffy wedding dress."

The redhead laughed so loudly it could probably be heard on the other room. "Fine fine, I'll leave the dress for Sora and Kokoro to borrow once they're old enough. I take it that means you won't be a kindergarten teacher either?"

He shook his head. "I don't think teaching is for me. You have the patience for it but I do not."

She doubted that. Soundwave had told them that before the Shadowplay the scientist ran an academy. Even if he didn't remember it now he had it in him to be a teacher. 'I hope soneday he'll be able to remember.'

"Okay, since teaching is out of the question, there's only one place we can take you to!"

He knew that look in her silver eyes. Orihime was plotting, and whenever that happened it was wise to be wary.

The twins had been left in charge of Orhime's best friend as they went out for the night. Surprisingly, their friends took them to the bakery Ulquiorra owned. The place had changed for the better since the last time they visited, being expanded and remodeled along with having more employees.

"I take it business is booming. Don't let Swindle visit or you might be in trouble." Soundwave said.

"Things have been going well. We even have dance nights as of late. Orihime was hoping you'd both like to join us for that.

Soundwave beamed at the idea, still he hesitated, knowing now why their friends were eager for them to join.

'They want me to confess now.'

It's not as if he didn't want to but rather the fear of finally having to give up hope that Shockwave would feel the same. He knew it was likely that he would be turned down, but Ulquiorra was right. It was time to face this.

Shockwave was slightly nerveous as he didn't know how to dance. He was naively expecting to cook pastries with Ulquiorra and Orihime but then he realized it'd be illogical for them spend their night out working. At least he had a music expert for a partner.

"Shall we?" He asked, noticing how flustered Soundave became as he took his hand.

The song they would dance to was slow, yet happy, he had heard it a few times when he worked alongside Soundave back home.

"I'm glad we visited. It seems that our friends are doing very well with the shop and the babies."

"Yes. I hope we too can get that rest when our war is over."

He couldn't wait. Soundwave was tired, everyone was already tired but they were close and he intended to go at it until the end

"Despite my reservations, I think I'd like to stay a human for a little while longer." Shockwave mused.

"Really? Why is that?"

"I missed having a face."

Soundwave felt his spark break at that revelation. Though he understood as he also missed seeing Shockwave's gorgeous face as they woke every morning, before he had been tortured. 'That was already 5 million years ago...'

But 5 million years or 1 day didn't make a damn difference, because he still wanted him just as much. "It suits you, and I'll confess I've missed it as well. Now I can do this..."

Shockwave felt Soundwave's soft lips cover his own as the taller mech gently pulled him closer. The kiss was like switch within him as the mere action brought back feelings he didn't think he'd ever have.

It was familiar, it was sweet, it was heated, and it was heartbreaking all at the same time. Right then and there he knew that this confirmed his previous hypothesis. He didn't just know Soundwvae before his fall but they were lovers.

"...You have waited milenia for that, haven't you?"

The spymaster nodded as Shockwave wiped away a few tears from his red eyes. "I'm sorry, I just couldn't keep quiet anymore."

"Then don't. There's a reason fate has yet to separate us. And I don't think I'd let it."

This time Shockwave kissed him, just as intensity and sweetly. It was all Soundwave had been craving for a long time.

The pair only broke away when they heard Ulquiorra and Orihime chuckling ad they observed them from a nearby spot.

"We should play matchmakers more often." Orihime said.

Ulquiorra smiled. "It's safe to say they did it for us first."

Kubo and the symbolism of names in Bleach

Tite Kubo, author of series like bleach and burn the witch, is pretty well known not only thanks to the evolution of his artsyle troughout the years but also because of his foreshadowing, wich not only consists in planting elements to bring them back later,his foreshadowing goes to the point to even express aspects about his characters trough their name especifically two popular and fan favorite characters, the first one i want to adress is the protagonist, ichigo kurosaki:

in normal circunstances the word "ichigo" in japanese can means one of two things, strawberry and the number 15, it is generally believed, that even though strawberrys are not orange, this meaning of his name is closely ralated to his fiery orange hair, and ichigo is referred to as "strawberry" not only in various parts of the manga, but also on volume titles, there is at leas three separate recopilatory volumes with the words "death and strawberry" in it the strawberry part making reference to ichigo, and the death part making reference to rukia kuchiki, who acts as ichigo´s first gate into the soul reaper world, another meaning of ichigo´s name, comes thanks to the kanjis used to write his names, this kanjis being 一 (one) and 護 (protect), giving it the meaning of the one to protect, wich is esentially the central point of ichigos character and wich is treated througout all arcs of the series, he obtains shinigami powers from rukia to protect his family, he awakens his own dormant shinigami powers to rescue rukia from an unfair death penalty, he learns to control his inner demons or in this case, hollow in order to protect his friends and rescue inoue, and lastly he is able to connect with his roots and accept his true self and true power in order to protect the world, and most importantly, his loved ones.

another fan favorite character wich an interesting name, is, undoubtedly ulquiorra cifer, as most of the hueco mundo arc elements and arrancar his name actually comes from an spanish phrase, fonetically it comes from the phrase "el que llora", wich is both right on the spot and ironical, his face has two lines recorring from his eyes all the way down to his jaw, both lines really look like black tears, from the other side, ulquiorra is actually a pretty clueless character in what emotions are concerned, maybe the fact of being born by the fusion of thousands of hollow souls withouth one specifically being in control is a factor of this attitude but during his short life span in screen time, his character always sees to lack ubnderstanding on emotions, and most importantly the metaphisycal concept of the heart, and how it connects friends, lovers, and dear people in general, but it seems that his interactions with the main group of heroes changed a part of that, as while he vanishes into death after his battle with ichigo, he seems to be bothered about dying as he finally took an interest in humans.

there is a lot of other examples of kubo using names to foreshadow/define caracteristics about his characters, like retsu/yachiru unohana, but i think the 2 i adressed are perfect examples of how talented of a writer kubo really is.

Starrk

Do all of the times he's bound to fall asleep during sex count? Because that's going to happen way more often than you'd like. When Starrk feels too good, sometimes his body just defaults to passing out as a response to the pleasure and relaxation. So yes, he can absolutely fall asleep while he's inside of you, or the other way around. On top of that, he's one who can break the bed if he gets too into things... Hollow strength can be quite dangerous.

Halibel

She's not too bad about doing weird, awkward things during sex, but there are still moments. Some of the funnier of these are when her instincts take over— for example, not being able to stop nuzzling into your neck or purring way too loud when she's trying to give you oral. Considering how composed Halibel always is, these little slips are quite significant. Don't tease her, though. She'll get surprisingly pouty if you make fun of those moments.

Ulquiorra

Number one is the delightful tendency of his to remain completely blank-faced and empty-eyed while you fuck him. When Ulquiorra gets too overwhelmed, he kind of spaces out and goes nonverbal, which ends in a lot of dead-eyed, mid-sex stares. Even funnier (for you) is when you get the normally emotionless Espada wrecked to the point of actual howling. The blooper part of that is when nearby Arrancar have clearly overheard it.

Nnoitra

The main "bloopers" you'll get involve him saying something really, really weird. And probably incredibly morbid. Nothing kills the mood faster than Nnoitra's inner angst taking over and making him say something weirdly violent and dark. Other than that, there are the moments where he just starts crying because of how overwhelmed he is. Those are the ones where all horny has to stop before Nnoitra panics and shuts down completely.

Grimmjow

The funniest one is when you're getting a little rough with him... and the submission instinct kicks in. Hard. It's not under any of the usual circumstances— his body just nopes out and goes basically unconscious for a few minutes. Grimmjow considers it absolutely humiliating, but you find the memory of his dazed, vacant expression and blank eyes to be pretty hilarious. He's also one of the ones who will absolutely break the bed.

Szayel

There have been and will be multiple times where he gets up in the middle of sex to handle some "vital" experiment that he forgot or write something down that just occurred to him. The science comes first. You know this. Also, considering his peacock-level tendency to show off, Szayel's the one who's going to try to be sexy (like the striptease mentioned) and absolutely fail. Usually, because he misunderstands what exactly counts as sexy.

Aaroniero

When sex starts getting too intense, Aaroniero has a bad tendency of losing control of his "human" form. And getting very, very gooey. There are times where you wind up more or less fucking a pile of slime, much to his eternal shame. It takes a lot of convincing to assure him that you're not disgusted. The other fun one is the first time you make him come hard enough to squirt you in the face... neither of you knew his body could do that.

Sorry this one is a little late anon!

If nothing else, doing this list made me appreciate how well Kubo designs his characters in terms of showing their personalities and the core of who they are, it's always been one of his strengths as an artist. As with other lists, this is purely personal preference where I'm ranking my favourite character designs, not necessarily the 'best' designs.

Honourable mentions: Rangiku Matsumoto, Yoruichi ShihoinByakuya Kuchiki, Bazz B, Jugram, Jackei Tristan, Barragan (original form), Tsukishima, Kukaku Shiba, Uryu Ishida (FB arc only), Tobiume, Shunsui Kyoraku, Ulquiorra Cifer, and Coyote Stark (Ressurecion).

10. Soi Fon

I'm not a big Soi Fon fan, but I can't deny her character design is fantastic; she often stands out because of it and makes her presence known. I love her first look, the cloth-wrapped braids were so cool and the yellow sash was a nice touch. I'm not a fan of her look after the Full Bringer arc, but her asymmetrical haircut in chapter 686 is pretty neat. I also love the shape of her eyes, they suit her character really well and are different from most of the other characters' eyes. On a side note, in terms of design, she has one of the coolest and most unique looking Shikai too.

9. Shuhei Hisagi

Say what you want about Hisagi - whether it's about the '69' tattoo or that he's a discount, hair colour swapped Ichigo - he stands out. He's got a lot going on in his design: the aforementioned '69' tattoo, the other tattoo going across his nose and cheek, the scars over his eyes, the literally explosive choker and arm bands, and the sleeveless Shihakuso. I love all of it, and it's what drew me to him in the first place. What kind of guy is this? I wondered the first time. He looks cool! And just based one how many fans this guy had before the Fake Karakura Town arc came out, if Kubo's goal was to make you instantly like or at least be intrigued by this guy based on his design, [then for me] he succeeded with flying colours!

8. As Nodt

The moment I saw As Nodt for the first time, I was immediately intrigued by his design; he looked like something out a black metal concert (heck, I could see him being the mascot for a black metal band). His design adds to his powers, I legit flinched when I saw him without his mask the first time and still get a little creeped out by his Vollstandig for when I go back and read his fight against Rukia. His volume cover remains one of my favourites, he just looks so looming and intimidating.

7. Vasto Lorde Ichigo

The form so cool they create a whole move based around it, and who could blame them if that was the case! Just look at this design! It's the perfect fusion of Hollow and Shinigami, showing the lengths Ichigo (and Zangetsu) went to come back from the dead. Sometimes when I watch the anime adaption of this form, I'll have to pause for one reason or another, but when I come back, I'm always taken aback whenever I pause on a frame of the Vasto Lorde form because it looks both so cool and so intimidating.

6. Retsu Unohana

I'm starting to think I have a thing for intimidating and/or dark haired characters. Unohana's design is deceptive as heck. She looks like what you'd expect the head of a healing division to be: kind, soft, and dignified. Her front braid is the best part of her design (and I may or may have not tried to copy it with my own hair when I was younger); it conveys a softness to her, but you also can't help but wonder why she has this braid at the front. At one point she has her hair tied back but we don't see her up close except for her face. It got me wondering if the braid was hiding something, and it would turn out years later I was right. When she undid the braid for her fight against Kenpachi, she just completely transformed and suddenly the intimidating energy she conveyed took on a form (but then I think her iconic face in that chapter also helped).

5. Kenpachi Zaraki

You know exactly what you're getting when you first see Kenny (or at least, I did). From the scars to the eyepatch to his tall, bulky frame to his hair (whether it's his spiky bell hair or his grown out hair) his look matches his personality perfectly; Kubo could not have designed a better character with a personality like Kenpachi's. You're just waiting for him to either throw the eyepatch off or grin maniacally or both and the fight instantly gets all the better for it. I like both his first look and his second one, but if I could only pick one, I'd do with the former - it's the hair, I just thought it was awesome!

4. Hyourinmaru

Hyourinmaru is lucky enough have not one but two awesome character designs. He looks awesome as a dragon, particularly after Toshiro regains his bankai during the TYBW arc (that shot of him appearing behind Hollowifed Toshiro will never not be cool). As for humanoid form, for me it's one of the best Zanpakuto spirit designs Kubo did for this arc. He looks other-worldly ancient (like he's been around since the dawn of the Shinigami), and also like a guardian, watching over and protecting his master. It's also a creative design, with the sash as a tail and the ends of his limbs being clawed and made of ice. Somehow the 'X' on his face works to bring everything together; I've seen edits online where people removed the X and he just looks so weird without it.

3. Momo Hinamori

She has one of the most plain designs in all of the series, why is she up so high on the list? Well, in a series where unnatural eye and hair colours are the norm, spiky hairstyles are in, and some people just seem to be trying to one up each other having the most distinctive (and at times daring) looking uniforms, sometimes it's refreshing to see a character who just looks ordinary. In short, sometimes I just want a little bit of simplicity. For me it conveys that her priority isn't in her appearance, that she's not interesting in looks, whether it's her own or other people's (that isn't to say that other characters who care about their appearance are judging other's based on it, see Rangiku for example...I don't know, maybe I'm reading too much into this, wouldn't be the first time!). Ironically though, Hinamori is one of the more complicated characters, so the most simple thing about her ends up being her design; but for me, that's kind of the point, it added a layer of relatability to her.

In all of her designs, the most flash thing about her is whatever she does with her hair. In her first design she has the hair cloth, which in the manga is either white or a pale grey, and in the anime happens to be the same colour as her division colour, which I think is a neat touch showing her dedication to her position and maintaining the Fifth Division. Her next hair style is short with a hair clip. Was she trying to match Shinji? Was there a discount on hair cutting for shorter hair at the time (aka Rukia, Yachiru, and Shinji all getting their hair cut shorter as well)? I kid of course. I've headcanoned that it's a sign of her moving on from the past, cutting her hair short enough that she can't put it back in a bun (for now). I must admit her second look too some getting used to, but it grew on me and I came to really like it. Her latest look, though, has got be my favourite. The bun is back but this time's more elaborate with a hair piece that's got the Fifth Division's flower insignia on it (perhaos showing her commitment to her division again) I love how intricate this new look is, t retains the usual simplicity but now has a bit of flair in it. If we really are getting a new manga arc, I hope Momo keeps this look! There's probably a way to read deeper into how Momo's character design changes represent her arc/journey across the series, but I won't dive into that rabbit hole here.

2. Toshiro Hitsugaya (FB and TYBW arcs)

My bias is really starting to show now! XD He's one of my favourites, mostly for his character journey and relationships he has with other characters, but a small part does have to do with his design. First up, it's not exactly an original idea to have the character who wields ice powers to have white hair and some shade of for the eyes. It's a colour scheme I've always liked, and Hitsugaya definitely fits into this description, but there are a few things that are different - like his eyes being more green than blue.

Now don't get me wrong, his first appearance is great, I always felt the look was showing he was trying to fit into an adult's world, that he's the head of a division and he wants you to take him seriously. However, when I think of him, the first images to come up nowadays are his appearances from the FB arc onwards. I remember the first time I saw his new hairdo I went, 'Wait, is that his old hairstyle?' Turns out no, it's more like a fusion of both his hairstyles. And in a weird way, I couldn't help but see it as a reflection of his growth. We see in one of the omakes in the volume 53 that Hitsugaya says what's different about him is that he's taller, and later on in the TYBW arc he's making jokes about his height. I took the change in appearance to show that while he still wants to be respected and not be seen as a child, he's a bit more relaxed about it now, that there are more important things to worry or get angry about. I also like his latest appearance, which is basically the same but without the scarf and with slightly shorter hair...gotta admit though, I miss the scarf.

1. Renji Abarai

So a fun fact about me: before I was a major Momo or Toshiro fan, Renji was my favourite character. Don't get me wrong though, he's still one my favourite characters in the series (probably in my top 5), it's just Momo and Toshiro ended up taking first place when I became invested in them. Anyhow, Renji made a strong first impression when I first saw him, and that's largely due to his character design. Up until then the most unrealistic hair colour was Ichigo's. Then in comes Renji with his pineapple-shaped red hair, tattoos for eyebrows, and oversized goggles. To say he left an impression on me would be an understatement.

I've always liked Renji's first look, from pineapple red hair to the white bandana. But for me, his best look was after he came down from Zero Division. The furs, the armguards, the zebra-pattern bandana, and the goggles (he finally, FINALLY, has a pair of goggles again!), it all just works on him! He looks awesome, like he's about to go out, kick ass, and look good while doing it. He's no longer the stray dog barking at the moon, he's a king. Must admit, I was kind of sad that he ditched some of his accessories along the way to the Soul Palace, but he looked awesome.

And that's the thing with Renji, for me, all of his designs are awesome - I've even come around to the braid, which I initially didn't like. Every single design ties in with Zanpakuto spirit and abilities, his background, and his general character so well.

Finally, his tattoos are awesome, I don't care what anyone else says (seriously, Bazz-B and him should have been bros...I mourn for what could have been); I seriously wonder how Kubo can sit down and draw him because of all those tattoos, but he's a richer character for it.

Grimmjow

Being close to Grimmjow is a bumpy ride everyone knows that but dating him is an ever crazier ride one I'm lucky enough to experience. We haven't been dating for long it's been only a month since he more or less demanded we go out, really it had seemed like a dream but here we are on a date in the human walking hand in hand through the streets. " Why did ya even want to come here". He pulls me closer to his side wrapping his arm fully around my waist as we walk. " I thought it would be a fun date we can even watch the fireworks before we have to go back!" I point up to the hill near us he just chuckles grinning a but as he leads us to it. The view was amazing much pretty then anything we normally see in Hueco Mundo and as the fireworks start up I cant help but look on in awe. " Thank you for agreeing to come here Grimm" I lay my head against him " Course I mean I like when you smile and this was something I could make happen so..ya know why not.." He looks off it clear he's blushing red the tips of his ears a nice pink I cant stop the giggle that escapes and before I can even think about I lean up and kiss his cheek. Grimmjow tenses for only a moment before I feel his lips touch my head the silence drifting over us as I say wrapped in his arms.

Ulquiorra

Its never easy talking with Ulquiorra no matter how many times I've done it. The funny thing about it is that I'm not nervous or worried when we speak it more like I never know what to say he just so hard to read I cant help but wonder if he's even listening half the time. Today was one of those days with just the two of us left in the meeting the room lord Aizen had disbanded it almost an hour ago though I had stayed in hopes of getting a littler more work done and Ulquiorra for some reason had come back to sit with me. " Do you intend to stay here all night." his voice cuts throughs the quite" Oh, hmm no sorry I'll be going soon." I hum placing the papers in a nice stack before standing up. Ulquiorra nods also standing and wal. king around the table I at him tilting my head as I wait for him to speak. He holds his hand out waiting for me to take what he's offered. Resting in the palm of his hand sat a jade ring though the jewel was large and smooth the band itself was a soft champagne color simple yet so beautiful. " Is that for me" I was stunned looking at the ring my eyes darting up to his " Who else would it be for besides weren't you the one who said you wanted one' Wait you were actually listening to me when I said that! " I always listen when you speak Y/n and I believe you even said you wanted one because it matched my eyes..yes?" His voice had a teasing edge to it and I wasn't sure what to do. My face heated up and I couldn't look at his face I reached out grabbing the ring from his hand and kissing his cheek" Thank you lets talk again later"! I rushed off leaving behind as slowly flushing Ulquiorra.

Hitsugaya

Hitsugaya isn't someone you would think of when when you hear the word affectionate he just seems to closed off for it. I can say however with full confidence that the word suits him wonderfully. Its one of my favorite things getting to come home after a hard day to Hitsugaya already waiting tea brewed and bed ready for soft intimacy. The best part of it however is just how easy it still is to make him blush three years together and one might think something as small as a kiss to the cheek would be nothing but not for Hitsugaya. The evening draws on just the two of us cuddled together in blissful silence his arms keeping me close and pleasantly cool. The steady pulsing of his reishi helping me wind down from the day, pushing my body up slightly I lean over pressing a gentle small kiss to his cheek before settling back down his face is already turning red." I love you Tōshirō" A glance up shows my a now flaming face his smile now more present then before. " I love you as well Y/n" A kiss to the forehead and his arms tightening around me I let myself drift.

Who has trouble getting it up?

1. As Nodt. Not only is he scared of death, but of ‘the little death’. He fucks like its the last thing he’s gonna do and will probably not have the courage to go all the way anyhow. RIP to anyone who wants to get nutted in. Your man gets soft the moment you ask him to cum.

2. Mayuri Kurotsuchi. It is truly painful how much this man wants to be above sex. He takes anti-depressants just to flaccid and Logical when you won’t leave him in peace. He’d be first place, but he refuses to permanently fuck with his huge wrinkly brain (tm).

1. Byakuya Kuchiki. He isn’t ignorant about sex per se, just the particulars of casual sex, since he was groomed to be a squeaky clean figurehead. And you can’t really produce an heir while using a condom, can you? He doesn’t even know to where begin. He takes the unopened condom with absolute confidence despite his ignorance and pointedly does not look at you when you fix his handy work, which is so heinous you have to use another one. (He fucking bunched the extra latex at the base for some reason, leaving the head of dick no breathing room and it ripped.)

2. Keigo Asano. He’s just extremely nervous and keeps putting it on too quick, catching it with his nails, and ripping it each time. He makes a joke about how his cock is just ‘sort of a monster hahaha’, but he is getting sweatier and more desperate and oh no, oh no, he is getting soft.

3. Gin Ichimaru. Absolutely is on purpose. He knows how to put on a condom thanks to being forcibly detained by Unohana and given a menacing demonstration on a banana after pressuring a 4th division woman to fuck raw. Purely scumbag tactics.

Harribel says--with a completely straight face--that the pull out method will be fine.

Who yells out the wrong name in the heat of things?

1. Momo Hinamori. She apologizes the moment she realizes and is fucking horrified. Really, she has no feelings for [redacted] anymore. She doesn’t know what happened. If she could, she’d go into witness protection.

2. Shunsui Kyoraku. Especially if you’re not romancing something heavy and are a one night stand. He tries to laugh it off, rubbing the back of neck and shrugging like it’s a ‘what can you do?’ moment. If you are romantically involved he will get drunk and depressed about it later on--just another reason he doesn’t deserve you.

3. Shuhei Hisagi. He might be thinking about the Seireitei Bulletin or about that party later tonight that you were both invited to and blurt out a name. Like, ‘holy shit titstitstitstits also the captain invited me to drinks later holy FUCK wow that feels soooo good -chan you fucking goddess fuckfuck oh right Captain--’, kind of train of thought. He boards the apology train and makes all the stops--flowers, heartfelt words, physical affection, an alright song cover with his guitar.

4. Uryu Ishida. In his defense, you were roleplaying and he simply called out your character’s name. This will happen a lot. It’s pretty hot, actually.

5. Isshin Kurosaki. It doesn’t happen a lot but sometimes he calls out his first wife’s name and it’s just something you have to live with. Just sad and unfunny and horrifying.

Who sends you to the 4th division via indecent blinding?

1. Renji Abarai. King of awkward good intentions, he leads your blind ass to the 4th division and waits by your side like a puppy waiting for punishment. He just gets really excited and forgot aiming was important. You insist it wasn’t as bad as the time he shot his load up your nose, though.

2. Akon. In his defense, you were playing with VR headsets and he shot his load in good faith while getting an imaginary face full of 3D anime waifu titties. He can’t imagine taking this to his captain and rushes you to the 4th division before anyone in the 12th can spot him.

3. Nanao Ise. She holds a lot of stress, so when she lets go, the result is usually a ridiculous amount of squirting. She leads you down deserted streets and disappears when anyone shows up, leaving you standing while blinded for like minutes at a time. She would rather die than have her peers find out and leaves you at the 4th division the moment they’ve written you down for intake.

4. Rangiku Matsumoto. She really likes to ride your face and it is simply not her fault that you aid and abet her. Of course if you’re going to play slip’n’slide so often, something is bound to go wrong. She leads you down to the 4th and if she sees someone she knows she’ll call out like ‘haha, guess what?’. It is the second time this month.
