I've had to wake up way earlier than I'm used to every day this week and I am beyond tired at this point. I think I need to sleep for a good 24 hours straight now.
Unfortunately I didn't have a choice in all this. I got called in for jury duty last Thursday and ended up having to actually serve on a jury this week. It was my first time having to do any of that so it was an interesting and somewhat enjoyable experience, but that doesn't change the fact that the disruption to my sleep schedule has destroyed me.
Didn't have any nightmares this week though which is nice, but that was honestly just because I didn't get enough sleep to actually dream most of the days. did have a couple weird kinda unsettling dreams last night though.

This week my sisters, my brother and his girlfriend, and I helped my dad get rid of some unneeded furniture. This meant carrying bookcases to my sister's Honda and a small couch and cabinet to my Ford.
The items I took are now on Craigslist for a nominal amount. I don't like dealing with people who shop CL's Free category. "Hey man, I live in Iowa and am thinking of coming to Minneapolis sometime in December. That love seat you listed is pretty sweet. Will you hang onto to it for me until I find a buddy with a truck who wants to drive 250 miles one-way for a free couch?"
Asking $10 avoids those responses. It also makes other people think they're getting a super deal. When someone willing to pay a few bucks does show up, if they seem nice I will even tell them to put away the wallet, though I might charge a "convenience fee" for helping load the couch into their vehicle.
Moving furniture is one of my least favorite activities. It's right down there with paying convenience fees or waiting for noobs in line at an ATM. What's our PIN, Delores? Didn't you write it down? Is it our dog's birthday? No? Gimme a sec, I'll remember. Should I get the $20 out of checking or savings?
However, my dad took us out for pizza afterwards. Eating free pizza is one of my most favorite activities. It's right up there with pressing the start button on a full dishwasher or sleeping in freshly laundered sheets under a heavy blanket. My desires are simple and easily attainable.
My other sister has one of the filthiest vehicles I've ever seen. She lives at the end of a dirt road. You can recognize her Chevy on a highway as it leaves a cloud of dust when she comes to town to shop at Target or get free pizza.
Sadly, my truck's interior is no better. It has so much dog hair that when that sister went to to put pillows and couch cushions in the back seat I advised her to keep wearing the mask that's required at my dad's apartment building's public areas. In fact, there is so much dog hair someone might think I'm fibbing about that couch coming from a pet-free home.

hi! hope you're having a good week. i absolutely love your podcast, it's one of my all time favourites of all time :) feel free to disregard this question, but are you comfortable disclosing, however vaguely, how much money the podcast made you? if it made you money at all, i have no idea about the costs involved in running a podcast. but yeah i love our presenter so much, i already know i'm going to miss new monstrous agonies drop day once it's over!
Thank you so much, I hope you're having a lovely week as well! And thanks for your kind words about the podcast - don't tell anyone but it's one of my all-time favourite too 😉
Your question got away from me a little, so my apologies if this is way more detail than you were looking for! But I think in audio drama in particular, and in creative industries in general, we really don't talk about money enough! If any other creators want to chime in, I would love to hear your thoughts and experiences!
The cost of running a podcast like MA is very low in terms of actual cash. Aside from the first lot of equipment I bought - a mic, an audio interface, a mic stand and some cables, all coming in at about £180 total - any money I've spent has been on nice-to-haves rather than absolutely necessary outlays, like upgrading my mic set-up and building a little IKEA-hack recording booth over the summer, or paying for a domain name and email.
All this to say, my costs are a little higher than they need to be because I'm bougie 💅😌 If you're wondering what the hard, necessary costs of running a show like MA would be without those choices, it's really very low once you've got a semi-decent mic and built your recording booth blanket fort.
As for how much money it's made me, accounting for those expenses which off the top of my head I'd round up to about £1000, then MA has made me approximately £3000 since November 2020 - obviously with fewer people on the Patreon etc at the start, and more now. I'm sitting at about £250 a month from Patreon right now, which is absoutely incredible to me, and makes up a decent chunk of my actual living expenses. Thank you, everyone who pledges! 💖
However, the main thing I think people forget when they're thinking about money and podcasting is that old adage, time is money. I'm a freelancer and I work from home, so I can be very flexible about when I do MA work and when I do paid work. But the time I spend in the booth recording, or editing episodes, or even on social media (hello!) is all time that I'm not spending on actual billable hours.
Personally, that works out fine for me. I'm outrageously, stupendously lucky in terms of my financial stability, and am in a position where I can say, yeah, I'll work part-time for money and spend the other hours in the week making a podcast, knowing that the vast, vast majority of my audience isn't going to be able to/want to support me financially. (For context, MA is sitting at around 350,000 total downloads right now. If everyone gave me £1 every time they listened to an episode..... 😅)
Also, MA is a relatively time-cheap show to make. I spend about a day writing, and then the actual recording, editing and posting might take another 6hrs total? So two "lost" paid working days a week, basically.
But like... have a wee think about how bare bones MA is. Up to 50% of each episode could be written by submitters, and the rest is very formulaic and easily repeatable. It's a single voice production, with a couple of scraps of music and no sound design whatsoever, if I can help it! And the episodes themselves are only 15 minutes long, cutting all your recording and editing times right the way down.
So, let's say you're a podcaster who doesn't have the freedom and flexibility that I do with regards to your day job, and you don't have the comfy cushion of savings to cover upfront costs, and you don't live somewhere with a low a cost of living as Belfast, and you want to make a show that isn't so (intentionally!) stripped back and minimal... 😬
People like to say that podcasting has a really low barrier for entry and that's true to an extent - "all you need is a mic". But I think we do everyone a disservice if we don't look seriously and honestly about the financial costs involved - including time spent on unpaid work!
All this to say, I am so enormously grateful to everyone who is able to support MA financially, whether that's with the occasional fiver on ko-fi or a regular pledge on Patreon. It really does all add up, and it makes a real, genuine difference to my daily life. £250 a month is more than I hoped to make, and I'm really thankful for everyone who has contributed.
And if you do have an extra couple of quid burning a hole in your pocket, do consider supporting the creators you love 💖🥰

I've seen your boot posts, and I've been looking to get a semi-affordable first pair. What brands would you recommend for a boot newbie?
So it really depends on what you like, what you want, what you need, what you can afford to spend etc.
Also just for the record I only wear men's shoes, so I don't really know anything about women's boots if thats what youre looking for, and a lot of brands stop making mens shoes at a size 7 so if your feet are smaller than that you might be out of luck?
But I really think for just general wear, Thursday is a great entry level boot brand. Most of their lineup is right at $199, which obviously is still i lot of money, but they're goodyear welted and resoleable and made with quality leather. You really cant do better at that price range for build quality and range of options. They have a LOT of styles and a lot of different leathers for each style. (Their mens boots also go down to a size 6 so its more flexible for sizing as well if that applies to you). They tend to style fairly business casual friendly, so versatile for wearing in different situations etc. I have a pair and I really like them!
If you need something heavier duty for work, thorogood is probably the cheapest you'd want to go, in the $250-$300 range, for out of the box comfort. Or Red Wing is another tier up from that at like $300-350 but those are built with leather insoles and not a lot of modern amenities so they will last you forever but they need a real break in before they're comfortable.
But if you just want them for a look and you dont really care about boots and resoling, you can buy something cheaper that looks nice to you. Boots dont HAVE to be an investment. You like Doc Martens? Buy Doc Martens! (Buy them on sale though, they are overpriced at full retail.) I have a cheap pair of Timberland Pro moc toes i wear to shovel snow and they work just fine and they look cool to me.
Generally speaking though, like, read the product pages. The more specific information they tell you, the better the boot is likely going to be. Where is the leather from? What is the construction (goodyear welt? stitchdown? blake stitch? or is it cemented?) Is there a leather insole or is it foam (there are upsides to each but they should tell you whats in there!) The better the boot, the more they will tell you, because they have something to brag about. The less info they give you, the more they are hiding and the less you should be willing to pay for it.
And generally, buy boots from boot companies. Don't buy boots from companies that make most of their business selling something else (like harley davidson or carhartt for example) because they are most likely just buying up mass produced boots and stamping a logo on them that adds $100 to the price.

Did a lot of cleaning and straightening up yesterday to get ready for my old Covenmate's visit; she's going to raid my sewing box for some materials (or at least see if there's anything she wants to take) when she comes to pick me up for our day trip.
Pushed myself into a mini flair yesterday, however, so I have to finish the rest of it today. So I've spent the first half of the morning cleaning instead of filming videos. Husband messaged me on Discord and asked me to take a break and call the shop to check on the car, though.
Guy at the shop said they're currently working on the car right now, because the part didn't come in yesterday like they'd hoped. But they've got the new Throttle Body on, and now they need to do the Catalytic Converter replacement. Unfortunately after they got the Throttle Body on it started throwing an additional error code for an issue with an Intake Valve (I didn't quite catch which one). So they're going to finish the recall replacement on the Catalytic Converter, give it a short test drive, and then recheck everything and see if it's still throwing the new Intake Valve code. If it is, then they're going to call our insurance and have them tack it onto the claim so that we don't have to pay an additional cost or open a new claim and go through everything all over again.
Husband also asked me to get an estimate so we know how much to have in the bank while I'm gone on the day we may have potentially been getting the car back. And on that note the guy said that because we opened a claim and have the Mechanical Insurance, and because Insurance is covering things so far, he's going to try and work with us as much as they can to make sure that hopefully all we have to pay is just the $250 deductible in the end. No shop costs or anything. He can't completely guarantee it, especially with the new code showing. But that was still really nice of him.
And now it's back to cleaning.

So those 15 and a half miles with ease I'll probably get a little over 20 which is pretty good and the other bike might be just under that I might get 25 with the lectric expro that's not even the extended battery.
Zues Hera
Street classy checking it out. Had to kind of push through it and got some help from the battery knows about his evil people need it though but holy s*** everybody who goes near him has some stupid f****** crap in their hand and they get hurt by it I don't know where this s*** came from they knew that mom had a problem girl saying this dumb s*** to me too. They need places to work they need places to go they need safe havens and they're turning this into a nightmare themselves they have to stop turning it into a nightmare maybe it'll be in a safer place you don't go on asking for it and you have to stop these two or three Trump people they're insane. We have business ideas we'd like to do and we'd like to work on things for some reason you guys are all nutty as a freaking wood out you don't want to work you don't want to play you don't want to fight for stuff you want to walk up and bother one person which doesn't really do s*** for you and it's a very negative thing and people have you do it and it hurts you and it's not a worthwhile adventure so I suggest to you don't do it and find something else to do. And really there's a lot of jobs coming out there's a lot of professional work and we are in trouble all over so they're paying good money and they provide very nice housing and there's all sorts of toys and you're going to be with friends instead of learning how to be the ultimate grouch and not being a person who has a life and fun and enjoyment and Friends things to look forward to and aspirations it's all going away with this negative place I've seen it before people coming they waste away and it's it's like wasting away in Margaritaville and the Parenthood guy is a full-blown Mac and they encourage you and they're down here doing that so they're doing it to our friend here and he says you're absolutely insane I don't go around getting into Charlie's off and these guys can do that and they do and it helps them out I do things other than that to get my drawings on like fly the jolly Roger it means something and they said this we Rodger that and I heard you can try and I'll tell you what they lost with this idiot s*** they're cramming through us and they're probably falling for a lot of fun and stuff don't care they're all knocked out narc later than narcosis and John remillard is the one who started to try and warn them we got in a lot of trouble it's practically gone because of it I said that Claudia was doing it and she's probably influenced by others and they went to China and Chinese were all laughing at his jokes and s*** and really that's some nasty stuff coming back
Bg
I'm going to make a moped and it will have two high higher distance so long and distance batteries and we'll have a mid engine and it will have gears and it will have a larger sprocket and back and it'll go about 65 miles an hour it can cruise at 40 for about 250 miles if you weigh 150 lb and it's a moped so you don't need a license and I think you don't need insurance but some people get it it's only like $10 a month it's an option for our friend and they're not going to be that much money probably 2,200 bucks and getting them on the road and yeah moped is a scooter you do have to watch out for your pedals and a friend says you can get the kind that puts them up and you put footpegs down it's still a moped and I do that crazy s*** so I'm going to try and do it a lot of people will buy them and just keep the pegs up and he says he will it's dangerous with the pedals and it really a moped is a low powered vehicle that you can pedal if you have to it has nothing to do with pedal assist and you also register it and insure it and some places in your license I think one or two states otherwise you need a driver's license which is the requirement is to drive an automobile the very very good idea and helpful

These people are God damn rude I don't know what the hell their problem is and I saw the saddlebag the way it was and everyone's arguing and they're going to get the tape the police are because it's harassment suit and for real that people who are harassing him are going to jail in prison and we don't want this s*** anymore and she's getting paid by Trump and it's going to blow that open I mean how many things do you have to get exposed for go to jail for get shot for you to shut your freaking mouth you like little kids 3-year-old children running around screaming people pick you up and take you to incinerator it's embarrassing to you

October 31st, 2023 (Part 1)
*Graphic Sexual Content*
This morning, I met up with J--. He wanted to meet up yesterday, but I wasn't sure how long he was going to stay and I didn't want to have his appointment run in with F----'s.  The thing about F---- is he wants to pay $350. I like that a lot. That's so much better than F----'s 250 and everyone else around here’s 200.  I don't know why the people in B----- are so much  stingier than the people in A-----.
I actually kind of liked J-- at first. instead of coming over and just going straight up to the bedroom, he actually wanted to take me out for breakfast. It was the first thing I remembered to offer  the guy  a drink of water, because that's what you do in Texas. I don't know if you do that here, but I offered him water. after like two sips of the glass, he talked about how much he want a coffee.  so, for pretty much the first time this entire vacation, I actually went out.
we climbed into his car, a fancy Mercedes-Benz, and drove the like 2 minutes to the nearest duncan. he was telling me all about how there's hardly any Starbucks up in this area, how most people prefer Dunkin' Donuts since it was established here, how the weather in the leaves change, how the girls here aren't good enough to have sex with him. the bouncing back and forth between  topics is always a little bit jarring, but I'm getting better about it. at least he was nice to the trans person in the window. I don't know if I could expect that from the  A----- men.
we got coffee and a little bit of breakfast, they went back to the house. we were talking and laughing and I was doing my best act I could normally sociable person instead of the Social hermit I like to be. we talked about work, talked about Texas, talked about skating and hockey. mostly just sitting out in his car. for a minute, I thought he was going to be one of those guys that just wanted to talk and didn't actually want to fuck. but of course not.
soon enough, we were back in the house. he was sitting there rubbing my thigh rubbing my back. I was expected as much, but it would be nice that if for once I could actually go do something sugar babyish. mostly, I just feel like a hooker. sure, I got breakfast out of it this time.  Beyond that, it's pretty clear that most of these people just want to get a quick fuck in. We made out on the couch for a little bit. He did a lot of kissing my neck, reaching up under my shirt to play with my boobs, saying weird gross things that men say as if they're sexy. then, out of nowhere, he stuck his fucking tongue in my ear. like what the hell? absolutely disgusting! why would anybody like that? I like it wasn't a brief little tongue flick, he full on tried to deep throat my ear with his tongue. absolutely horrible and I still get chills thinking about it.
it wasn't very long before we finally went upstairs. the mandatory blowjob for way too long happened  before he finally put on a condom and stuck it in me.  I don't know what happened. I don't know if it's cuz I miss him. I don't know if it's because I'm having kind of a shitty vacation. I don't know. all I know is that I started out really liking J--, kind of thinking this could be somebody I could see more than once, then it suddenly hating him and wanting him to leave. I wanted him to leave so bad, but he was another one of those guys that just wants to lay there and cuddle, then fuck again for hours. he brought six condoms. he also  brought Lube, which is nice, but it was at the point where i just really wanted him to leave.  I don't know if it was cuz I had just woken up and really wasn't feeling it or what.
he said he really really wanted to do anal with me, but I was just so much pain from yesterday that I kept having to tell him no. what bothers me about guys who are that demanding and want to have that much sex is a lot of times are not actually that good at it.  they always have an air of selfishness, a ‘you owe me this because I'm paying you’ attitude.  the worst part about J-- was how he fingered. he was so bad at it. he would take his fingernail and scratch. He was legitimately scratching at my clit. and after how rough F---- was with me yesterday, it hurt so bad. I feel like somebody who's that old should have enough experience to know that that's not good.  it's pretty hard to imagine anybody enjoying that.
It got to the point where we were cuddling again  and I was making these big shows of yawning, telling him that I was too tired from all that great sex. I mean, I was tired. Since he wanted to meet so fucking early in the morning  and F----- had ruined the sheets from yesterday, I had to get up at like 6:00 a.m. to get the house ready. to make it look presentable. to make it look like I'm a professional. well, not a professional. guys actually hate it when you act like you're a professional. one of the things I see the most often is “ I don't do transactional”.  basically, they want to live in this fantasy that you want it just as badly as they do. if that was the case, you wouldn't have come with a wad of cash in your pocket.
I was yawning and telling him I need to go to sleep. he kept trying to say that he can still stay,  talking about how we could go get in the shower to wake me up a little bit. the shower here doesn't heat up much Beyond lukewarm and my Texas Blood just can't handle that. but mostly, I wanted him to leave. every time he spoke I felt this annoyance building up in my chest. every time you touch me I wanted to push him away. I was just sick of him. I wanted to go back to sleep, wanted to cuddle up underneath the blankets alone. Eventually, he did leave  and I was finally able to go back to sleep. I had another appointment that night, somebody I actually kind of enjoyed talking to over text and was way more looking forward to.

22 feb 2023 ...minus the trauma
Before I went on a trauma tangent about a 10 year old grudge, (unedited by the way! Really trying to keep it real and not the fluffier version) I thought it would be cool to look back at this and realise my problems get smaller with time and hopefully it'll help me see the bigger picture, that the hard stuff doesn't last as long as I think it would.
At the moment I really stressed about money. I'm at the end of my quiet period, so I know it's about to pick up soon but man it's been a difficult stretch. My cousins Alex and Jeremy are getting married, in two different countries, about 5 weeks apart. Alex is getting married to Katie in Paphos, Cyprus at the end of April, early May. Jeremy's getting married to Ayse in Bodrum, Turkey end of May, early June. Because they're abroad, we're going for a full week in both destinations so we have 2 holidays this spring, and 2 holidays to pay for too.
Alex and Katie's in Cyprus is an air bnb type of thing, so flights and accommodation has had to be paid straight away. My sister Sarah and mum have very nicely spotted me and sam because we didn't have a spare £700 each at that time and because theres 6 people going and it was in the best location, it needed to be done asap.
Jeremy and Ayse's in Turkey is a package holiday that we found on Jet 2. Which means it didn't have to be paid until next march, as in next week type of next march but we booked this in June so in our heads 'next march' is much further away than it actually is. So we're really scrambling for money to pay for that. it's also £700ish and I had £600 saved up before christmas but Sam bought a car and he needed £600 in cash so I had to give it to him last month. I'm low key kind of upset about that. Not that I had to lend money to him but more like now I'm having to find the money in a much less amount of time. He also said that he'd give it back before the deadline but it's a week away and he's given me £250 of it back so far and I don't think I'll be getting it back in time.
On top of this, we went to dinner with my family last monday for Sarah's birthday and sam overstayed the time limit on the car park so he had a parking ticket through the door yesterday. It's £45 and I just knew it would be easier to pay it myself with my own money rather than endure his 'I just won't go to these holidays, they're not even my own family getting married' tantrum. Which I know if I said that to him he'd say 'I wouldn't say that' but he would and has in the past.
I also had to pay £82 for fuel in my car yesterday which I know is unavoidable but that just makes it more painful to pay. I also have to pay for hello fresh now. Sam initially paid for it but he got too stressed about paying it so I switched it to my bank details so now I pay it.
I know the cat and the dog needs their raw food buying soon but I've paid for the last few lots and I can't ask sam to pay it. We also have a cleaner who comes every 2 weeks for £50 and although I can't live without her, we were supposed to half it but I pay for it every time.
Although I'm stressed about it, I know that if I speak to sam about it I know exactly what he'd say. He'd say how much he pays for the bills on the house, how the mortgage is like £500 every month, how he pays his Nana £200 every month for lending him the deposit on the house and how I don't send him 'rent'. I know he pays for a lot but the way I see it is, he earns more than me, he can actually afford that, it's a stretch yes but he can still afford it nonetheless.
I think I'll have to ask mum to pay for the holiday. She's already paying for Cyprus. I'm going to have to ask her to pay for Turkey. But she'll ask where that £600 has gone, because then she'll ask why Sam needed to borrow that money.

Hi! I'm the person asking about Purdue (I'm back) and I was wondering if you live in an apartment? Or if you knew if there were any near Purdue/what they're like??
hello again anon!! so last year i lived in a dorm and this year i’m living in an apartment!! lemme get into some of the details about both. i must preface with saying that i think it’s probably more in your favor to live in a dorm first year, since a lot of the apartments are booked the year previous by upperclassman (i signed my lease last october – my first semester), but sometimes you can find one far off campus (then you will need a car). SO LONG STORY SHORT, i recommend dorm first year, but apartment after that. unless you ABSOLUTELY KNOW that you’re going to go to purdue, do NOT look for an apartment; they are expensive and most leases get signed the year previous, so you’d have to start looking right now if you were to start in fall 2018.
this response is very long, so everything is under the cut to prevent cluttering people’s dashes.
dorm
features, provided appliances, services, etc.
some of the dorms have air conditioning; mine did not, however it did not bother me at all!! you can have some appliances in the dorms, but none are provided for you except for in the kitchen in the basement.
you are allowed to bring the basics: refrigerator + microwave. you cannot bring a toaster, rice cooker, crockpot, or anything else basically. a large fridge and a stove/oven are provided in most basements of the res halls. so are cabinets to store dishes + cookware, but i do not suggest leaving anything down there for public use.
in EVERY hall but Hawkins you are required to have a meal plan. meal plans are honestly a life-saver no matter how little or how much you eat. it’s always nice to be able to stop on campus and not have to cook for yourself or constantly buy meals. not saying cooking isn’t fun (i prefer it, but i have a billion food allergies), but sometimes it’s just convenient to have pre-made meals for you.
laundry!!!! there is laundry!! in!! the!! basement!! take advantage of it. i will probably end up doing laundry in my boyfriend’s dorm this year instead of going to the laundromat.
cleaning supplies are also provided either at the main hall desk or in a closet on your floor! this is useful as you do not need to buy/bring a vacuum, broom, etc.
cost
living in a dorm can cost anywhere from $5,000 to $15,000 depending on where you live and what meal plan you get. personally, i had the boilerflex unlimited 500 (tbh i didn’t use all the meals or dining dollars lmao). anyWAYS it is infinitely cheaper than living off-campus imo (unless you’re on the higher side but even then i think a dorm is more worth it).
dining dollars enable you to be able to buy food/drinks/groceries on campus with money that is pre-paid as part of your meal plan. this only exists for the boilerflex unlimited 500 and boilerflex unlimited 250, but it is well worth it imo. i used my dining dollars to get groceries at the small store on campus.
social aspect
sO i lived on a floor where there was a thing called a “learning community.” these are groups of students that share classes and have meetings and whatnot and get to know each other (basically). click on the link for more detailed information. there are LOADS of learning communities around campus in the dorms and they’re actually a great way to get to know people :)
also being in a dorm, you can get to know the people on your floor through floor events, similar classes, etc. also odds are you’ll have a roommate (or two) and you’ll be able to get to know them! my freshman roommate and i weren’t amazing friends, but we did talk and do homework together and such. it’s just kind of like a built-in friend if ya need one, and it can teach you a lot about yourself to live with someone else!
location
being on campus is honestly the best thing ever; if i had had a person i’d wanted to room with for another year, i probably would have stayed on campus.
alSO being on campus is super convenient for work + school purposes – being close to classes is super convenient, and being close to work is also super convenient! i lived in the middle of campus, only 5-10 minutes from class in terms of walking distance. i lived right across from the gym (where i worked). now i’m living up on the north end by the physics building, but it’s gonna take me WAY longer to get to classes + to my research. it’s now about a 25 minute walk to my research building as opposed to a previous 10 minutes.
living on campus, you’ll probably also just be able to walk everywhere unless you wanna get off campus. refer to the location category under the apartment tab for more, but i’ll probably have to take the bus to some classes and to the store and stuff.
further expenses
i had very few personal expenses. as i said previously, i used my dining dollars + meal plan to the best of my ability (to buy my groceries, eat my meals, etc. without buying a ton of food + spending loads of money). that being said, i think the only thing i spent money on was laundry, which was relatively cheap.
(besides of course buying stationery and shampoo and whatnot but that’s all my decision ya know – personal i guess??)
apartment \ i will talk about my apartment which may or may not be different from others just fyi
features, provided appliances, services, etc.
some apartments have air conditioning; mine does not haha but again, it does not bother me at all, and it makes it slightly cheaper!! in my apartment (and in most, if not all) some appliances are provided already such as the full-size refrigerator, stove/oven, microwave, and dishwasher. i personally am bringing a crockpot, rice cooker, and toaster.
you will not have a meal plan and will have to cook for yourself, but if you like cooking, then you’ll be fine. you’ll also have to buy groceries to do this – an extra expense.
there is no washer or dryer in most apartments and if there are, they are likely more expensive in terms of rent; i do not have one, so you must either go to a laundromat, pay for laundry services in west lala, or handwash/use the dorms. thankfully i have a way in to the laundry via my boyfriend (it’s relatively cheap on campus).
cost
my rent is roughly the cost of living in the dorm i did last year BUT i don’t have a meal plan, so the rent is actually more than the board w/o the meal plan. does that make sense? like the board for my boyfriend’s room w/o a meal plan is like $5k, but my rent is a total of around $10k… so yeah. anyways, you also have to pay for internet, heat, electricity, water, etc. so those are some extra expenses. for me, heat, elec, and water are all a static fee every month, but internet and laundry do cost extra money.
extra expenses that you probably don’t think about: cleaning supplies, groceries, gas, cookware, furniture, heat, water, electricity, internet, etc.
i looked at about 15 different apartments; the one i’m living in is the cheapest one i could find. i found anywhere from $700 - $3400 per MONTH in terms of rent.
social aspect
i mean, you’re living in a building where you don’t really know anyone unless you chose to live near someone in that building that you’ve known for a while. for me, i’m living two floors below a couple friends of mine and my boyfriend’s. but other than that, i know no one else in the building and honestly no one else in any other buildings around me. i don’t know a lot of people at purdue, but sometimes living in an apartment can cause you to isolate yourself since you’re not in the heat of campus anymore.
but you can have parties + functions + dinner get-togethers at your place, which are always fun. i personally like having other couples that we are friends with over to have dinner + drinks. but like i said, harder to develop relationships since you’re not on campus – this probably requires previous friendships.
location
you’re off campus. walking to classes will take longer, getting to the grocery store will require the bus; i’ll probably even take the bus to some classes that are far away.
tbh it’s kind of inconvenient to live in an apartment far away; having a car is not in my interests, but it would be useful. i am probably going to use a car service such as blueindy or zipcar to get around when i can’t take the bus.
again, you’ll have more unforeseen expenses that require more money than you may have planned/allotted.
further expenses
cleaning supplies, groceries, gas for your car if you have one, laundry if you go to the laundromat, furniture, appliances, cookware, etc. – basically things that you’ll need for an apartment + other things you’ll need for cleaning, food, etc.
internet, water, heat, electricity – some places have a flat/static rate but you will never be provided with internet.
netflix, hulu, amazon prime, other services for shipment/tv.
personal expenses: clothes, stationery, books, coffee at starbucks, etc. – things that you want. these come last now that you have other needs to pay for that are not provided for you as they are on campus.
if you have further questions about any of the above, please do not hesitate to ask. for personal questions such as the cost of my rent, more specific details of my apartment, total costs, how long my lease is, more specific location, etc. please come off of anon and i am more than willing to talk.
