Whumptober Day 21: Airport
Fandom: Ace Attorney
Characters: Gregory Edgeworth, Raymond Shields
Notes: Gregory and Raymond spend a long Autumn afternoon waiting in line for airport security. Gregory has a Dad Sneeze™ and Raymond is a hat thief. Post Class Trial so Gregory is hype about his son actually having friends :’)
“I don’t remember these lines being so long.” Ray crossed his arms, still chewing the last of the instructions for the security process he had written down. “All this waiting isn’t doing anything for my nerves.”
“They’ve been like that for a while.” Gregory checked his watch before using the wrist wearing it to absentmindedly rub his nose. The line might have been long, but in truth, the two had only been in line for about two minutes. “We also only just got in line.”
“Hey, Mr. Edgeworth?” Ray swallowed. “I was wondering. What’s your son doing while you’re away this week? Since you said your parents used to watch him and they died a few years ago.”
“He’s sleeping over at a friend’s house.” Gregory put his hand in his coat pocket.
“Really!?” Ray looked surprised, not thinking beforehand if that might offend his boss. “Oh, uh, sorry.”
“I was just as surprised as you were. First he comes home with a dog and asks to watch something that isn’t the news, next thing I know he’s already attended his first birthday party a few weeks ago.” Gregory grinned, almost in pride. “It’s still obviously pretty new to him, but I feel like any day now I’ll catch him eating cereal on the couch and watching Saturday morning cartoons.”
“Do they still have the show with the ducks?” Ray asked the most pressing question. The line moved slightly, so he led his mentor ahead a few steps.
“I wouldn’t know. I’m at the office longer than you are.” Gregory’s sentence was punctuated with a sharp inhale. He quickly turned away. “E’SSHHOOUH!” He sniffed. “Excuse me.”
“I thought you said you were done when we got in line.” Ray cocked his thread.
“I said I thought I was done.” Gregory corrected, turning away again. “A’ESSHOOUH!” He pulled a pack of tissues from his pocket, selecting one to subject to about three more, this time barely muffled, sneezes. “There’s doh guaradteei’g duri’g ragweed seasod.” He sniffed, wiping his face.
“Can I say one more time that I’m really glad we took a cab here?”
“You already have. Four tibes at that.” Gregory tugged another tissue from the pack to clean himself up, nose absolutely included, moving forward as the line progressed.
“When we passed by that field of ragweed on the way here, I thought ‘if Mr. Edgeworth was driving, we would both die right here.’” Ray continued, not picking up on Gregory gesturing with his hands to cut it out. “The driver seemed so unbothered while you were sending my heart out of my chest!”
“Raymond, you can stop now.” Perhaps Gregory couldn’t blame Ray for making fun; he was young, after all. He thought of how he would have acted if he were in the 18-year-old’s shoes. Of course, that didn’t change the fact that by the sixth time his apprentice just had to put on theatrics over a sneeze, it started getting old very quickly. “People are already staring.”
“S-Sorry about that, sir.” Ray scratched the back of his head. “Do you think it might be a good idea to take off your hat?”
“Are you asking that just to try it on again?” Gregory raised a brow.
“No, I swear.” Ray assured. “I was just thinking how that’s usually what bothers you. Pollen gets caught on the brims and all that.”
“So that’s what was on the note you ate last week.” Gregory recalled. He intended to handle removing his hat with care, but Ray took it more recklessly and gave it an aggressive shake. “Raymond--!!” Gregory scrambled to cover his face with another tissue, thinking if he pressed hard enough he could combat the intense itching aggravated by Ray’s attempt to clean off the hat.
“There, good as new.” Ray swapped his hat with Gregory’s. He really did want to wear it after all. “I’m glad we did this before we got on the plane. You would be feeling really sick the whole flight if we kept it dirty like that.”
“Maybe it’s best if I just put it in my bag.” The nasal quality of Gregory’s voice paired with the muffling from the tissue over his face. He swiftly reclaimed his hat with his free hand, securing it under his right arm. “I wonder if it was a good idea saying I would voluntarily let you wear it someday.”
“You can’t say I don’t try.” Ray shrugged, laughing nervously. “You were just kidding about that last part, right?”
“I don’t recall saying I was kidding.”
Ray backed away and pressed a hand to his heart, only half pretending to be hurt by the statement. From where he was standing now, he took a look around the line ahead of him. He knew they moved forward a little, but that was just it: a little. He made a noise through a closed-mouth frown.
“The plane will take off by the time we make it out of this line.” He complained and turned to face Gregory, who was visibly fatigued from a combination of waking up early and the allergic reaction that had winded him since he left home. “Do you think we can just get a refund and tell the department we won’t be at the meeting? You said it was optional.”
“You were the one who wanted to see a real meeting.” Gregory looked behind him, his heart skipping a beat when he saw just how many more people had joined the line. “Are you absolutely sure?”
“Yes, sir.” Ray nodded. “You’re looking pretty beat, after all.”
“Hm, so it’s for my sake rather than just impatience?”
“I’d say a little of both.”
In the end, Gregory and Ray found the flight had been cancelled anyway, resulting in both a sense of relief and disappointment. Now the next hurdle was passing by that troublesome field again.

Summary: Hannah gets some unexpected news and she and Tammy have to figure out their new reality.
Words - 2180
Warnings: none
Pairings: Hannah Khoury/Tammy Gregorio, Tammy Gregorio/Sebastian Lund (Friendship) Hannah Khoury/Jack Sloane (Friendship), Jack Sloane/Leon Vance, others to be added.
A False Spring
Hannah wandered around  her kitchen, luckily she had managed to sleep some the night before. She could hear Naomi’s footsteps from the hallway, she was up and getting ready for school
“Naomi, get ready we have to leave in ten minutes” she called out.
As Hannah made Naomi’s lunch, happy that her new child had only made her sick once so far, and if she had to get sick again, hopefully would be after she dropped Naomi off at school.
“Mom, are you okay?”
“Yeah baby I'm fine why?” Hannah asked as she put a sandwich in Naomi's lunchbox.
“I heard you get sick this morning and you’re acting weird.” Naomi replied as has came up to Hannah.
“Just a lot on my mind baby.”
“When are you moving in with me and Dad?” Naomi asked, her face tilting up to look at Hannah.
“Baby we talked about this, your dad and I aren't married anymore, remember?” Hannah said as she brushed some of Naomi's hair back.
“That's not fair mom.”
“I know.” Hannah sighed.
“Go get your shoes we're about to be late.”
---
As Doctor Mary Riggen walked in, she greeted Hannah, “Hey Agent Khoury, how are you doing today?”
Hannah who was sitting on the exam table, in the paper gown they had given her “Okay I think, I've been sick a couple of times but the exhaustion is the worse part.”
“Well those symptoms should hopefully die down in about a month for you.” Doctor Riggen said as she looked at her tablet “Your blood test confirms that you are in fact pregnant.”
“Congratulations. But I want to do an ultrasound today, both to confirm how far along you are, and make sure everything looks good. I see on your chart that you’ve had several miscarriages.”
Hannah nodded “I want to do as much as we can, I want a healthy baby.”
“Okay lean back then, sorry the gel is cold.” Doctor Riggen said as she adjusted the probe, “And there is your baby” she said pointing at a small blob on the screen.
Hannah felt some tears prick at her eyes, as she looked at her new child that was growing inside her.
“Okay Agent Khoury, you can sit up.” As she handed Hannah a towel to wipe her stomach off with.
“So you are seven weeks along. Everything looks good, try and take it easy in the field.” Doctor Riggen said as she made notes on the tablet. “I'm giving you a prescription for prenatal vitamins. I want to see you again when you are twelve weeks.”
The front desk will help you make a appointment and give you a copy of the ultrasound if you want it. Do you have any questions for me?” She said as she looked up at Hannah.
“I don't think so, but I can call if needed correct?”
“Yes anytime. We have a 24/7 line here. My extension is 482.” Doctor Riggen said as she left the room.
Hannah leaned back, her pregnancy seemed much more real now, even more than it had before. Her thoughts however were cut off by her phone ringing.
“Yeah Loretta.” She said as she answered it, listening to Loretta speak “okay on the way. I should be there in about thirty minutes. Have the team get started.” She said as she hung up the phone and moved to get redressed and go to the new crime scene.
---
The sun beat down on the ally near Jackson square, the wind was picking up and pushing trash about. Hannah walked over towards the group of vehicles she could see, she pushed through the crowd towards Lasalle, who was waiting for her with her jacket and hat.
“Hey boss, Naomi okay?”
“Yeah, she’s fine, just needed to do something before I came in today,” Hannah replied as she pulled the jacket and hat on.
“So what do we have? And who found the body?”
“Tourists that were coming back from a walk about Jackson Square and found em” Chris replied as they walked towards to the crime scene.
“Ah, Hannah there you are. We have Captain Gregory Hant he has multiple stab wounds including one to the chest, which I'm guessing is the cause of death.” Loretta said.
“But we also have some type of substance on the captain’s body. Sebastian can try and identify it when I get him back to autopsy.”
The substance was grabbed by the wind and blew towards the team as they listened to Loretta.
“It's okay I've already got a sample of it. I don't think we need to worry.”
“Thanks, Loretta. Street cams?” Hannah asked.
“Camera coverage is light here, I'll ask the businesses if they have angles here,” Tammy said.
“Great, Lasalle, you and I will head back to the squad room see what we can find out,” Hannah ordered.
---
Hannah looked up at Chris “Ready?”
“Yeah what do ya got,” he replied as he entered into the center of the room.
“Captain Gregory Hant worked on the wharves, he was in charge of buying fresh produce for the Navy.” Hannah said as she brought up his file “recently however he's been accused of mishandling funds. Other than that his service records clean.”
Chris nodded “married with a four-year-old son. Wife said he's been distant lately, but was a loving father.”
Hannah bit her lip, “So, no clear reason to murder him?”
“I might have something” Tammy hollered as she walked in, “One of the cameras caught this near the time of death” clicking on her keyboard before gesturing to the screen. There was a man in a dark uniform and he came out of the alley a knife in hand before wiping it down and throwing it in the sewer grate.
“Was that a marine that just killed our victim?” Chris asked slowly.
“Looks like it,” Tammy said.
“Okay, Gregorio get with Patton see if he can find this guy somewhere else, get a better angle.”
Hannah said before turning to Chris, “Lasalle look into anyone who might have had problems with the victim, see if you can find who accused him of mishandling the funds”.
“On it, boss” Chris said as he headed to his desk.
“What about you?” Tammy asked.
“I'm going to the morgue for an update from Loretta,” Hannah said as she left the office.
---
Hannah walked into the JPSO building, looking around for Loretta’s lab.
A warm dulcet voice came from behind her, “Hannah, here for an update?” Loretta asked as she came past her.
Hannah blinked out of her daydreaming, “Yes I am. What exactly are we dealing with here Loretta?”
Loretta gestured  as she made to the table, “We are dealing with a vicious stabbing. The killer wanted to cause maximum pain before allowing him to die. Captain Hant took stabs to his shoulder, both hips and grazes to his ribs and short puncture wounds to his legs,” the coroner pointed to the x-ray photos of the victim’s body.
“The causes of death is dissection of the aorta. The blow to the throats was postmortem.”
Taking a deep breath and pointing to the screen “The substance found appears to be mold of some type, he had also breathed it in shortly before death.”
“How can you know when he breathed in the substance?” Hannah asked.
“It was present in his sinus cavity but there was no inflammation so the body didn't have enough time to react to it,”
Hannah took a deep breath “What about the team? Do we need to be worried?”
Loretta shook her head, hair covered by the purple and tan scrub hat she wore. “No the team should be fine, the mold had degraded below the infective dose, and no one has a compromised immune system.”
Hannah paused in her pacing, “What about an unborn child. What would exposure do?”
“As long as the mother isn't infected the child should be fine. Why?” Loretta looked at Hannah, her dark eyes seemingly seeing through her.
“I'm seven weeks pregnant,” Hannah confessed, looking up briefly before dropping her eyes back to to the ground.
“Hannah that's wonderful!” Hannah smiled softly.
“What does Ryan think? He must be pleased.” Loretta said as she rounded the autopsy table.
“He doesn't know. I got pregnant the day before he signed the divorce papers. I'm not sure when I'm going to tell him or Naomi. Or how.” Her smile dropped as she explained the aftermath of it, her eyes still locked on the ground.
Loretta leaned her head to one side. “What do you mean?”
Hannah took a deep breath before starting “Ryan and I, really wanted another baby after we had Naomi, but I had five miscarriages after having her. The last one five years ago, came after I was at work, helping with this big op, I was almost three months along. That miscarriage was the beginning of the end for us. He blamed me for losing his baby.”
Hannah shook her head. “After the group made an attempt on my life and Ryan and Naomi were nearly killed. I sent divorce papers. He finally signed them but if he knows I'm having another baby. He’ll take custody the moment I give birth.” Hannah turned her head up to see Loretta “I can't make the mistakes I made with Naomi. I want this baby.”
Loretta pulled Hannah into a hug, feeling Hannah's body crumple against her before tears soaked her shoulder.
“Let's get you some tea sweetheart.”
---
Sebastian walked into the morgue looking at a tablet “so I figured out what kind of mold it is. Did you know there's over a hundred thousand types? Which is kind of terrifying if you think about it.”
“Sebastian dear, what did you find?” Loretta interrupted him.
He looked up and found a slightly teary looking Hannah sitting next to Loretta both had tea mugs in their hands.
“Oh, it's Stachybotrys Chartarum, black mold. Unfortunately, it's kind of common, it likes damp and warm places.”
“So all of New Orleans,” Hannah groaned as she put her mug back on Loretta’s desk. “Let's head back to the office, see if the others have had better luck. Thank you, Loretta.”
“You're welcome dear. My door is always open.” Loretta said as she picked up the mugs and went to clean them.
----
Hannah and Sebastian walked into the office together, while he split to the side to upload a map. Hannah turned to look as Chris, a questioning look on her face. “Did you find anyone with problems against the Captain?”
“Kinda. His brother in law, Sam Grady, has fought him several times, the last one two weeks ago, got the police called on ‘em. But he's out of town so he didn't do it.”
“At least not personally.” Sebastian pointed out.
“Also his second in command at the wharfs, Commander Lucas Thiy, is the one that filled the report against him. He's currently working on taking supplies out to a boat, due back in a hour. I'll pick him up then.”
“Okay take Sebastian with you for backup. And talk to him there, just in case.” Chris nodded and gestured for Sebastian to follow him out.
Hannah shook her head and went to see where Tammy and Patton where on finding the suspect.
She walked into Patton’s office “hey please tell me, you have good news.”
“Nope sorry boss, pretty quickly after the first time we see him that Gregorio found we only have a few more shots of him.” Patton said, shaking his head.
“Okay what are you doing then.” Hannah asked.
“I'm running with Gregorio’s help, my new program. It should be able to figure out our killer’s info. Like height weight that kinda thing.”
“Do programs that do that not already exist? And it can be mistaken by things like clothes and thick soled shoes.”
Patton gasped, “Not my program. It's written to take all that into account.”
Hannah turned to Tammy “And your doing what?”
“I'm trying to figure out his training. From how he walks and kills, I'm not thinking marine anymore.” Tammy replied her eyes glued to the screen.
“Okay I'm going to go start tracking the captain’s movements throughout the city the day he died.” Hannah said as she left the room.
----
Tammy walked into the main office and smiled she and Hannah were the only ones left in the building.
“Hey, what are you doing” she asked as she sat on the corner of Hannah's desk.
“Trying to keep up with the paperwork that comes with being lead agent,” Hannah said as she lent back in her chair.
“Oh I never want to do more paperwork than I do now.” Tammy said with a laugh.
“So you want to get out of here. Dinner and a movie at my place?” Hannah asked softly.
“Naomi’s back with Ryan. It's just us.”
“Sure, let me get my jacket.” Tammy said moving back to her desk, before meeting Hannah at the door, the two walking out hand in hand.

News U.S. economy shakes free of recession fears in striking turnaround since August - The Washington Post
News
The U.S. economic system is heading into 2020 at a tempo of regular, sustained converse after a series of hobby rate cuts and the frightful resolution of two alternate-related threats largely eliminated the threat of a recession.
This marks a dramatic turnaround in momentum since August, when some forecasters predicted a 50 percent likelihood of a downturn starting up by the cease of next twelve months.
Many economists credit score the Federal Reserve’s present hobby rate reductions and the marginally improved alternate describe for propelling the stock market to new chronicle highs and causing forecasters to bump up their predictions for how long the economic system can preserve rising and in conjunction with jobs without stumbling.
President Trump secured Democrats’ signal-off closing week on a alternate deal with Mexico and Canada that will preserve most items traded between the three nations tariff-free. He additionally reached a restricted alternate agreement with China that scrapped hefty tariffs score 22 situation to buy invent over the weekend in alternate for China agreeing to catch about $200 billion more in U.S. items over the following two years.
The alternate gives, while now not almost as ambitious as Trump promised, like lessened one of many finest drags on the U.S. economic system: uncertainty. While some industries peaceful face significant tariffs and closing tiny print remain in flux, industry leaders relate now not now not as a lot as they know what the utter is seemingly to be in 2020, offering more clarity than they've had since Trump’s alternate warfare commenced almost two years ago.
“Tariffs shall be far more exact for moderately a while,” Larry Kudlow, Trump’s high economic adviser, knowledgeable The Washington Submit. “Some of the barriers to converse, in conjunction with the Fed and alternate uncertainties, are being eliminated, and that will like a ambitious definite impact on the economic system."
U.S. Trade Consultant Robert E. Lighthizer mentioned Sunday that a pair of of the upper-scale structural adjustments the White Dwelling desires China to carry out might possibly possibly maybe maybe buy “years” to invent, reinforcing the realization that the White Dwelling might possibly possibly maybe maybe scale relieve a pair of of its adversarial methods next twelve months as Trump nears his reelection relate.
“The threat of a alternate-warfare-introduced about recession — which we never belief used to be high — has been materially lowered,” Ian Shepherdson, chief economist at Pantheon Macroeconomics, mentioned Sunday, in a confide in shoppers.
Kudlow predicts 3 percent economic converse next twelve months, a tempo that Trump promised voters nevertheless that has now not been reached since 2005 and nearly no forecasters start air the White Dwelling relate is seemingly.
While Trump is nearly definite to tumble searching his utter, the noteworthy majority of economists now relate the economic system will develop spherical 2 percent next twelve months, a rate exact ample to be sure unemployment stays discontinuance to a half-century low of 3.5 percent. This might possibly possibly maybe maybe earnings Trump on the campaign path, as no president since World Warfare II has misplaced reelection when unemployment used to be below 7.4 percent.
The main fears in August had been that companies would proceed pulling relieve their spending, Trump would proceed imposing tariffs, and companies would rapidly turn spherical and ax workers. But that worst-case utter didn’t materialize. Job gains exceeded expectations in October and November.
Many economists relate Trump desires to be thanking the Fed for coming to the rescue after he escalated the alternate warfare this summer time.
The Fed lowered the benchmark U.S. hobby rate three times this twelve months — in July, September and October — taking it from almost 2.5 percent the entire formulation down to correct below 1.75 percent. Trump has repeatedly bashed the Fed, calling the central monetary institution’s management “boneheads,” nevertheless it used to be the central monetary institution that stimulated the economic system in present months.
“The cause issues are taking a gaze more definite now might possibly possibly maybe maybe be attributable to the Fed,” mentioned Constance Hunter, chief economist at KPMG. “We're seeing a turnaround in housing attributable to mortgage rates are low.”
White Dwelling officers relate the alternate gives on my own might possibly possibly maybe maybe push converse up half a share level next twelve months, up from about 2.2 percent this twelve months. U.S. shoppers had been the powerhouse of the U.S. — and world — economies this twelve months, and that is seemingly to proceed next twelve months. On high of that, Kudlow argues, industry funding is seemingly to carry out a comeback next twelve months now that the Fed has made it more inexpensive to borrow money and Trump has hit the pause button on most additional tariffs.
Industry funding lowered in dimension from April through September despite assurances from White Dwelling officers that the 2017 tax cuts would consequence in a surge in smooth investments. That pullback helped make a travel on economic converse.
The economic system next twelve months is additionally anticipated to earnings from high ranges of executive spending, to boot to an uptick in Chinese language purchases of U.S. products. The manager is projected to employ $1 trillion more than it brings in through earnings next twelve months, an surprisingly nice gap accurate through a length of economic converse.
No topic the low hobby rates and progress in alternate talks, a vary of self ample economists peaceful relate the economic system received’t like up great momentum. Many uncover it treading water next twelve months, with a modest uptick in industry funding offset by weaker consumer spending. They substandard this on present clues, equivalent to stalling wage converse and sluggish retail gross sales for November, on the final a powerhouse month.
“We're now not headed in opposition to a recession, nevertheless the records hold now not converse any develop of sudden re-acceleration going into 2020,” mentioned Gregory Daco, chief U.S. economist at Oxford Economics.
Import tariffs remain on almost $370 billion rate of issues from China, with the bulk of those geared in opposition to parts frail in manufacturing autos and other objects. This has created an ongoing travel that introduced about a contraction in U.S. manufacturing this twelve months. While the most fresh records on manufacturing converse the sphere might possibly possibly maybe maybe need stabilized, it’s unclear whether or now not issues are enhancing.
Trump did agree to diminish tariffs on about $120 billion rate of Chinese language imports — largely shoes and apparel — from 15 percent to 7.5 percent, nevertheless Daco ran the numbers and stumbled on the impact of that used to be “negligible” on the economic system.
Venerable converse in a single other nation has additionally dampened industry optimism in the United States this twelve months, as roughly 90 percent of the enviornment economic system skilled a slowdown. Subsequent twelve months desires to be quite better, in accordance to the World Monetary Fund and other forecasters, nevertheless Paul Christopher of Wells Fargo Investment Institute mentioned this is also a “slack and shallow” world recovery that is way wimpier than what came about coming out of 2012 and 2015.
“China is re-orienting its converse to home sources, especially know-how production,” Christopher mentioned. “It is now not but definite what's going to force a world manufacturing recovery.”
The one share of the economic system that has shown noticeable pickup in present months is housing, a sector influenced far more by the Fed’s movement than by Trump’s alternate negotiators. Purchases and refinancing like picked up since the summer time, even supposing the inventory of homes for sale has remained low and affordability has been a serious pain in many cities.
But even in housing, the outlook for next twelve months is unsafe. Mortgage rates are inclined to preserve in the same divulge for months to come relieve after Fed Chair Jerome H. Powell indicated closing week that there is a high bar for the central monetary institution to diminish — or elevate — hobby rates in 2020 since the economic system is in a correct divulge and doesn't need extra stimulus. None of the Fed leaders penciled in a rate decrease next twelve months of their December forecasts.
Dwelling Depot, the home-improvement chain that is seen as a bellwether for the housing sector, scaled relieve its gross sales forecast for next twelve months after Chief Monetary Officer Richard McPhail mentioned the U.S. housing market in 2020 would “now not [be] at the diploma that we’ve seen in prior years."
But Ken Simonson, chief economist at Associated Same outdated Contractors of The US, predicts a “burst of home constructing” next twelve months and mentioned the most fresh surveys gift contractors are “very busy and upbeat” in regards to the long urge.
Mighty of this can also just rely on the spending habits of shoppers next twelve months, which economists, industry executives and political leaders are watching very closel

Often in the eyes of others, we strive to look better than we really are. Why is it so important to prove to others that our partner is the most caring, our career is the most successful, and our house is always in the best place? Elena Lisun tries to understand the nature of boasting and draw a line between “being” and “appearing” This year was important for me. I gave up a great job on NBC to get back to Chicago. He started dating his angel Jamie Holland. Started doing yoga (thanks to Jake Fisher and John Perlstein!). He wrote an album with Matthew Johansson. He wrote another album that I am proud of. He hung out with Owen Wilson and worked on an amazing project with Will Ferrell. Talked with David Gregory about Barack Obama. I was dancing. Joined the kickball team. Won several awards ... ". It is so easy to mislead those who were aware of my dream. First of all - yourself. And this is not even half the post on Facebook, which was sent by mail to the American blogger Tim Urban, his girlfriend. According to Tim, the evening was hopelessly ruined. He re-read it several times before he understood the reason for his annoyance: the most repulsive statuses in social networks are dedicated to the author himself and do not bring anything joyful to those who read him. That is, simply put, no one likes boasting. It is able to awaken dormant complexes and destroy any relationship. I have come across bouncers many times, but for some reason I have never wondered why they are doing this. What brings such a way of communication to people's lives? I was indifferent to the nature of boasting until I came across this article by Urban. Something in the post that he quoted, haunted me until I discovered that it was he who reminded me. My proper statuses in social networks had the same rainbow-sweetish aftertaste, and every word was supposed to confirm the colorfulness of my life and the complete absence of gray everyday life in it. By the way, something similar not so long ago I wrote just on the day of the outgoing year. Then my status gathered more than fifty likes, and I didn’t even think about the thought that someone could give my thoughts unpleasant feelings or even cause anger towards me. Quite the contrary - I was sure that my friends were sincerely happy for me, for my dreams come true and goals achieved. Urban's article forced a look at his behavior in a completely different light. And I liked this light less and less with every minute. took a fresh look at my posts on social networks over the past few years, and I found that they all shouted: “Just look what an amazing life I have!” - interspersed with travel photos, selfies with a beloved man, Moschino dresses, jewelry and the invariable attribute of the “happiest woman in the world” - chic bouquets in hat boxes and without them. EXPERT ADVICE: "A boast that evokes a desire to imitate, improve, change for the better is the most socially acceptable." Oksana Rustamova, Deputy General Director of Intellectual Capital Consulting Company Previously, I didn’t even realize that my thoughts about myself, my hasty enthusiastic posts after a wonderful holiday could make someone crazy. I was sure that my tender relationship with a man who confessed his feelings and thanked him for his incredible care, would encourage people to improve their own relationships, teach them patience and the ability to appreciate love. This is probably why I counted at least a hundred photos with my beloved. Each is an example of an idyll. I knew for sure that my friends shared my joy from trips to the islands, niche perfumes, new Prada shoes and a beautiful ring that I received during my engagement. Indeed, real friends are obliged - as they say, both in grief and in joy. Especially in joy. However, Google, to which I went for help, cooled my ardor. Scientists from world universities (London, Carnegie-Mellon, Bocconi) advise not to post information about major purchases on social networks, because people may not understand you and decide that you are trying to show off. Scientists ruthlessly state that a feeling of envy on-line cannot turn into a negative attitude in real life. As I was advised to be more modest, put yourself in the place of those people who read posts on social networks - in order to avoid hostility and discord in relations with acquaintances and friends. So, I was too frivolous, selfish and boastful. But where does the desire to show off come from and why was it imperceptible to myself? Arguments came across the most diverse - even those that in the spirit of Freud explained my desires with sexual dissatisfaction or a deformed clitoris. Not so long ago, American scientists conducted an experiment on the topic of how much joy people boast. The results showed that we love to brag, and this process gives us more pleasure than a large amount in a bank account or sex. During the test, participants had to tell any flattering stories about themselves. It is noteworthy that the data turned out to be the same - whether the person boasted during a live conversation or talked about himself in social networks. Usually people like to brag about what worries them the most. It turned out that at the time of boasting, the human brain activates the mesolimbic tract, which is responsible for the process of obtaining pleasure - for example, from delicious food, big money, and drug use. Self-esteem is also very pleasant for us. So much so that when the participants were offered a small amount of money in exchange for switching to discussing another person (say, the president), they all refused. The forums claimed that the root of evil lies in the indifference of the bouncer to the feelings of others, in unstable self-esteem, arrogance and even the desire to humiliate the interlocutor. Pierre Bouast, the author of a universal dictionary of the French language, and my grandmother no less mercilessly state: bouncers are people with dubious moral qualities. The first one claimed: "To boast is to say to others without any courtesy: I am better than you." Grandmother echoes him: “To brag - do not mow: the back does not hurt.” I never really complained about back pain from boasting, but this does not explain the nature of the strange desire to tell about my life in all colors. Looking for sources, I came across an article by the famous American psychologist and best-selling author Daniel Gilbert, a professor of psychology at Harvard. He substantiates boasting with a demonstrative type of temperament. Gilbert calls such people tantrums and believes that their main quality is the desire to constantly be in the spotlight by any means. Quite often they choose to boast. And it doesn’t matter that they receive extremely negative attention. It is more important to them that they generally receive it. Selfies are a typical example of showing off one’s own appearance. And thanks to the selfie (Relationship selfie - photo with your loved one), you can boast of a happy relationship My German friend, coordinator of international projects, thinks this way: “People probably brag because everyone wants to feel that someone needs them. Some receive it among friends, in a family, and some do not receive it, therefore they boast. ” However, such theories do not answer why people are so keen to prove that their choice of life partner is the most correct, their career is the most successful, and their home is always in the best place. What is the reason that women and men continue to praise their unloved place of work for friends? Why do some people prefer to remain modestly silent about their successes and achievements, while others so much need to shout about it to the whole world? Why, after I was unable to move to another country, I everywhere began to seek confirmation that it was probably for the better? And what is most surprising is to find. Indeed, it is much easier to believe that I did the right thing than to say to myself: "Yes, I am really terribly upset that I did not find the strength in myself to reach the goal." Therefore, now I diligently prove to others that I am satisfied and happy. And my new place of residence is the best confirmation of this. I live near the sea, I have a wonderful husband, I do my favorite thing - perhaps it looks perfect from the outside. And as proof, I will post juicy photos on a velvet beach with a perfect tan or jogging in a green park. It is so easy to mislead those who were aware of my dream. First of all - yourself. How many unfulfilled desires and extinguished hopes conceal praises of their choice! At the heart of these and similar acts is fear. This may be a fear of many obstacles to the goal - for example, to become not just an artist who paints for the love of art, but a great artist of her time. It can be a fear of losing everything by opening your own business. Or the fear of admitting to yourself that your relationship has become so bland that it does not even cause negative emotions. Or that disgusted work is the most boring in the world. Fear of changing something in your life - whether it's moving, a new relationship to fade away, or insecurity of your own talent - leads to a flood of boasting. Usually people like to brag about what worries them the most. The most frightened ones like to boast that they have worked in the same place for ten years. Thus, they tactfully hint about their professionalism and trustworthiness. The more a person seeks to fill the space around him with conversations about his life, the more I understand that the only thing he wants is to become more meaningful. Tell others and at the same time convince yourself that he is lucky. It turns out that for many it is quite enough to live by the dissemination of information - true or not. Their self-confidence, their happiness is not based on their own emotions, but only on the reaction of others. Only under the condition of feedback will harmony come in their souls - however, not for long. So the whole life of such people turns into an endless race for motives, invented or real. Some of the great ones said that happiness is a complete lack of desire to prove something to anyone. Listen to yourself: maybe you didn’t want a new gadget worth five salaries or a designer bag to brag to your colleagues, but more than anything else - to live in Bali? EXPERT ADVICE: "When you talk about yourself and your merits, boldly ironize yourself - recommends Vitaliy Graboev, a presentation consultant. - You need to show not only the front side of success. This technique is always used by stand-up comedians. Learn from them. The category of achievements is relative, and all good things are perceived as such only in contrast to mistakes. " Bragging is always a lie. First of all, because you are trying to be at least briefly in the rays of glory, or at least look better than you really are. Of course, there are safe types of bragging - for example, when grandmothers show photos of their grandchildren or my mother tells friends that I write articles for ELLE. It can also be attributed constructive boasting to increase salaries and obtain the desired position. But this is not about them. Bragging can be used as a manipulation. With its help, it is easy enough to provoke envy, irritation. In this case, the bouncer acts on the principle: show people your happiness - and you will poison their life. For example, my friend Olya set a goal to take revenge on her ex. To do this, she needed to properly embellish her life. First of all, with a new relationship. Olya threw herself into the arms of men, captured hot kisses on selfies, which she immediately posted on social networks with life-affirming signatures: “It seems to be in love” or “New magical life”. After a couple of days, the former sent a courier with a bouquet to her to work. This was another reason for collecting likes under the photo with flowers. It seems he even came back and they stayed together for a few more months. And then he disappeared again. If there is no love, you can play on jealousy and a sense of ownership, but the desired effect will quickly end. Next to great people, everyone feels at least a little great. Bouncers, on the contrary, are sorry to share their attention, admiring and envious glances. The bouncer's goal is to prove that the great one is here. However, deep down, he himself does not think so. It’s the hardest thing to deceive yourself, and rarely anyone succeeds. However, if it succeeds, people go crazy with megalomania. I would be very happy (and I promise that I would not brag about it to anyone) if I could suddenly find out that after reading my article, someone breathed a sigh of relief and thought: “Is there really so many idiots in the world who don’t allow themselves to live fully, but only live their lives? Probably, first of all, you need to prove to yourself: I can, I am worthy, I dream of a better life. It's great that I once took a chance! ”My friend Anya answered my question about the nature of human boasting brilliantly simple:“ This is when you don’t feel satisfaction and confidence from what you know yourself, so it’s so important for you to call and receive Delight outside. Self-sufficient people do not boast. "They go in worn sneakers and they don’t care what brand of car they have - they don’t care about the recognition of others." We always have a choice: to build something from ourselves or to represent something from ourselves. It’s best if you start building something when you’re at least imagining something. But even in this case, boasting is not the best way to talk about yourself.

BOLLOCKS is a good old-fashioned English word
Tumblr media
Bollocks is a good old Anglo-Saxon word of Germanic origin, which is nowadays used mainly as a relatively mild swearword but technically just means ‘testicles’ (see also avocado, knacker). In both senses of the word, it somehow only sounds correct when said with a British accent. Perhaps surprisingly, the word appears in John Wycliffe’s 1382 translation of the Bible, in which we learn that: ‘Al beeste that kitt and taken a wey the ballokes is, ye shulen not offre to the Lord.’ Which translates into modern English as: ‘Any beast that has had its bollocks taken away should not be offered as a sacrifice to the Lord.’ By the eighteenth century, ‘bollocks’ and its close cousin ‘ballocks’ had somehow become slang terms for ‘clergyman’, suggesting that what some of them preached from the pulpit perhaps led to the nickname. One of the most versatile old words in the English language, ‘bollocks’ can also be used as an expression of dismay or frustration – ‘Oh, bollocks’ – or a term of appreciation: ‘That really is the bollocks.’ The word’s most exciting role in its very long history, however, was at the centre of a notorious court case in relatively recent times. In 1977, the Sex Pistols ruffled a few establishment feathers with the release of their debut punk rock album, Never Mind the Bollocks, Here’s the Sex Pistols. The band and the manager of a Nottingham record shop who had dared to display the album in his window were immediately sued. The high-profile defence lawyer John Mortimer QC, creator of Rumpole of the Bailey, successfully demonstrated that the word ‘bollocks’ had for centuries been in common use as slang for a ‘priest’, and that it usually simply meant ‘nonsense’. The court was forced to publicly concede that the word was not to be considered obscene. Although admittedly other words for ‘nonsense’  may not have had quite the same ring. Bloomers are a big old pair of lady’s pants that are worn more for comfort than for sex appeal, especially the baggy ones. But, believe it or not, there was a time when a pair of bloomers was considered high fashion. Bloomers were invented in the mid-nineteenth century by Elizabeth Smith Miller (1822–1911) of New York state, with the intention of preserving a lady’s modesty while engaged in activities such as horse riding and cycling. Worn below the skirt, these pantaloons were long baggy pants, based on traditional Turkish trousers, which narrowed to a cuff at the ankle. They took a while to catch on and were widely ridiculed by the press, although when prominent women’s rights campaigner Amelia Jenks Bloomer (1818–94) started wearing them in the early 1850s, bloomers – as they became known after she enthused about them in her magazine The Lily – grew in popularity. On a related note, the Suffragettes took their name from the word ‘suffrage’, ‘the right to vote’, which comes from the Latin suffragium, ‘voting tablet’. The history of the word barracking and indeed its definition have become confused over the years, which is hardly surprising since both Australia and Northern Ireland stake a claim to it. We in the civilised English-speaking world understand the word ‘barrack’ to mean ‘jeer’ or ‘make rude comments in an attempt to interrupt’, but in the land down under, where the word actually originated in the 1870s, it means the exact opposite: ‘to cheer and support’. The story goes that, in the mid-nineteenth century, supporters of the Victoria Barracks team at South Melbourne Cricket Ground would be greeted with howls and jeers of ‘Here come the barrackers’ by opposition supporters. It would seem that Australian sports fans regarded heckling the opposition as a show of support for their own team, which is how ‘barrack’ ended up meaning quite the opposite down under to what it does here, where barracking the opposition is just plain old barracking the opposition. A separate Australian-based suggestion for the etymology of ‘barrack’ is that it comes from the aborigine barak, ‘banter’, although the first recorded use of the word in print is in the sense of ‘jeering and interrupting’. In a popular 1878 publication called The Pilgrim: A Sensational Weekly Pamphlet, printed in Sydney, we find: ‘Douglas mumbled over a petition for the edification of the assembled roughs and larrikins, but was greeted with noisy insults and cries of “cheese your barracking and shut up”.’ (Larrikin – or ‘little Larry’ – incidentally, used to mean ‘mischievous youth’ in Australia and New Zealand, but has since taken on the meaning of thug.) Meanwhile, in Northern Irish dialect, ‘to barrack’ is ‘to brag’, which is close enough to the modern meaning to be a credible alternative. Rigmarole, denoting a tediously complex procedure, is an unusual-sounding word from the mid-eighteenth century, while the origin of the term goes back well over 700 years. It dates to 1296, when the Scottish noblemen signed deeds of loyalty to King Edward I of England. They all fixed their seals to the deeds, which collectively became known as the Ragman Roll or Ragman’s Roll, either in reference to the ribbons (or ‘rags’) attached to some of the seals or to an earlier census collector called Rageman or Ragemund. Around the same time, ragman was a slang word for the devil (see ragamuffin), which may well have been the Scots’ nickname for the hated English king. Either way, there is little doubt that the process of getting the Scots to sign deeds of loyalty to England, and subsequently having to assemble the deeds into one forty-foot-long document for the king, was quite some rigmarole. I have often wondered why we call a level of a building a storey when it has nothing to do with the telling of tales, so I was interested to stumble across an explanation that links the two. ‘Story’, of course, means a ‘narrative of fictitious events’, and it is derived from the ancient Greek historia, ‘account of events’. Historia is also the root of our ‘history’, meaning ‘factual account’, from which we can infer that the difference between ‘history’ and ‘story’ is the difference between fact and fiction. Following this so far? Now for the tricky bit. Back in the fourteenth century, before the Caxton printing press changed everything, the word ‘story’ was used in architecture in the sense that stained-glass windows and stone carvings or sculptures on the outsides of buildings carried stories in their theme. The more rows of pictures on a building, the more stories it was able to tell. This kind of architectural story gradually developed into the more mundane ‘storey’ of modern times: an entire level of a building. I’m glad I found that out, as I can now view my local multi-storey car park with a whole new respect. To ride roughshod over someone is to treat them harshly and without consideration for their feelings. Horses that are roughshod have the nails protruding from their shoes, something that used to be done deliberately in order to provide extra grip in wet or icy conditions. But to be trampled on or kicked by a roughshod horse is a little uncomfortable, to say the least. In the eighteenth century, it was common for cavalry soldiers from many countries to ensure their horses were roughshod or had other sharp objects attached to their hoofs, the idea being that the horses would cut and damage enemy mounts with their sharp shoes. The practice ultimately resulted in horses doing more damage to themselves than to others, and it was quickly phased out. A horse that is cantering is moving at a speed somewhere between a trot and a gallop. And the word is only ever used in association with horses; dogs and cats never canter, and neither do lions and elephants. When the Anglo-Saxons invaded the southern part of England in the fifth century, taking over cities and towns previously occupied by the retreating Roman Empire, they gave the major town of Durovernum Cantiacorum a new name, Cantwaraburg, which meant ‘the town of the men of Kent’. It has since become known as Canterbury. Kent switched from paganism to Christianity at the end of the sixth century, largely thanks to a Benedictine monk called Augustine (later St Augustine), who had been sent over by Pope Gregory I for that very purpose, and Canterbury’s place as the seat of the Christian church in England was established. (There is a point to all of this, I promise.) A few centuries later, in 1170, Archbishop of Canterbury Thomas à Becket was hacked to death at the altar of Canterbury Cathedral by four renegade knights from Henry II’s court, who had supposedly taken the king’s throwaway comment ‘Will no one rid me of this turbulent priest?’ quite literally. The cathedral became a shrine to the holy martyr almost immediately, with pilgrims travelling from all over England to visit the scene of the crime. One of the most famous pilgrimages to Canterbury, of course, is documented in Geoffrey Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales, written at the end of the fourteenth century. The relaxed pace suitable for long-distance riding that would have been adopted by the Wife of Bath, the Knight and the many other real-life pilgrims later became known as a ‘Canterbury gallop’. The Sport of Kings (horse racing to you and me) became incredibly popular in Britain in the early eighteenth century, by which stage ‘Canterbury gallop’ was an established phrase. It was used outside the sport – carriage drivers, for instance, always travelled at a Canterbury gallop – but within the horse-racing community the expression was gradually abbreviated to ‘Canterbury’ and then ‘canter’, the word we still use today. I doubt this is quite what Pope Gregory I had in mind, however, when he sent Augustine over to Kent. The thoroughbred horses that are nowadays used in racing are cross-breeds of English mares and Arab horses imported to England around the turn of the eighteenth century. At the same time as horse racing was growing popular in England, it was also becoming something of a national pastime in Ireland, and the first steeplechase – literally a race from one church to another – was arranged in County Cork in 1752. The race was the result of a wager between Cornelius O’Callaghan and Edmund Blake as to which man owned the better horse, and it was run cross-country over the four miles between Buttevant and Doneraile. The modern steeplechase course has fences, ditches and other obstacles scattered along it to make it appear ‘cross-country’, but it doesn’t replicate what supposedly happened at the end of the very first race: the winner rode straight into the church at Doneraile and down the aisle, just as the vicar was holding a funeral service. – Albert Jack   Albert Jack AUDIOBOOKS available for download here
