I'm not really watching Fiona and Cake because I really can't rn, but I'm seeing spoilers n junk. So do you mind if I ask some semi-inappropriate questions I hear nobody asking?

Okay, does Billy not have a PP? If so why was he wearing loin cloths? AND pants! Did it fall off when the Lich skinned/possessed him? If so, why? And is the Lich genderless/sexless? He's just a soul that came from the materials in a Nuke/asteroid. Does anyone he posses become this way as well? He's just a 'he' mainly because his bones are recycled from a boy that was near the explosion.

As a send of here's my compilation of every detail/gag or pretty much everything that I loved about the Fionna and Cake finale.

First off, the lighthearded stuff.

First of all. That's Hunter!!! We finally get to see HW gender-swapped counterpart's design. Gotta say I love that they kept it the same, it does feel like it could fit anyone.

Talking about him, I LOVE that they are finally adding him to the gang. I didn't expect him to be so prevalent in the finale, but I couldn't be happier! It seems like the crew has finnaly learned to apreciate HW and they are inserting her (even if it's Hunter) whenever they can.

All the raw emotion of the lich would have been unheard of at any other point in AT's history. The depression and hopelessnes, such human emotions were amazing to explore in him. He poses himself as a "ceesless weel" a god-like beeing of pure destruction, but even he neels when he realices it was all for nothing.

For some time I theorized that Golb (and subsequently Golbetty) was, in fact, Scarabs and Prismo's Boss. Kind of like a ultimate deity, high up on the pantheon. But seeing how Scarab adresses her in such a careles way, emphasizing that she should "stay out of this" made me think about the real power dinamic between thees two. And thus, of the whole multiverse bureocracy.

This tittle card rips me apart. It's briming with thematic importance. But I feel so many emotions simply beacuse it says cheers, it's like a send-off, a happy cheerfull goodbye to all of us who enjoyed this show. It made me tear up a bit when I first saw it.

For thoose who aren't aware Pawn Swan's was created by Steven Wolfhard after CAWM alongside the pup kingdom. He has in his tumblr a gigantic amount of lore about it. I'm sooo happy they finally got to use his ideas and designs. Many of the pups seen all trought Shermy and Beth's sequence were in his drawings too. So go check that out!

I'm a complete sucker for happy endings and THIS was PERFECTION. I simply connot describe how much I obsolutely LOVE that they are able to comunicate and talk. it's just perfect, this show has me spoiled-rotten.

In pure Marceline fashion Marshal tries playing another song. And Gary is soo into this man it's unreal

But, also in pure Marceline fashion, he gets interupted. It kind of reminded me about Marceline's song to Bonny in Obsidian. But it's kind of the oposite outcome, Scarab isn't affected by it at all while Glorbo is finaly delt with.

Talking about Simon being happy. I'm just so glad that he has been able to reconect with Astrid!!! This man is such a DAD, I love him :,)

Before Fionna's world was finaly canonized we can see that it really just amounts to the city. Which makes sense because if you are trying to put a whole world in a dude's head, you are going to have to cut some stuff out.

Anyways, after they are made legit we can see that the city has expanded! And I also assume that now there's not only a city, but a whole world too!!

This really came as a surprise honeslty, but a welcomed one at that. I assume that since Jay agrees to stay in the city, even if it's not forever, Farmworld Finn must be fine. It doesn't make any sense for him to drop his 4 little brothers just to screw around in another universe.

The only sad part is that, since we don't see neither PB nor Marcy in the tank that means they are probably dead. In the end it does seem like they took eachothers life, together.

Now onto the heavy stuff!

"This is the world we want to fight for. The Scarab is kind of invincible. But we won't give up. If we die, we'll die together, as ourselves"

This cuts deep. At this moment Fionna was ready to die. She acknowledges that she had tried everything she could and that, in a way, it was her fault. But she also understands that this is what it is. And she's ready to depart. In what she thought were her last moments she found happines in thoose and that around her. Magic or not, they were all together, and that's what mattered.

"We made our choices. We could have made better ones, but I don't have any regrets. You were a wonderful experience"

We knew Simon had wronged Betty. She had put away everything for him. He didn't do it on porpuse, but he recognised he could have been more thoughtful. In the end, while Simon acknowledges his mistakes Betty doesn't demonise neither him nor the relationship that came bacuse of it. It's a very sentimental, heartfelt conclusion.

As humans we often try to make our best to navigate life. But with all the choices in front of us it's very hard to get it right. A lot of time might have to pass before we truly see how wrong we were. We realize that we hurt people, and that things didn't have to be this way. But once we acknowledge this we can finaly move on. At this moment, Simon realizes that it's okay to fail but, unfortunetly, we can't go back. We have to live with it and it can't prevent us from moving forward.

In the end all we can do is have compassion for ourselves, and for each other.

That was pretty much all of the details and highlights for me. There's some other ones but they are kind of too obvious to point out.

It really buoys me that people enjoy Julia, thanks for the message! I made her in World of Warcraft at a very difficult point in my life as some distraction and escape, she’s very close to my heart, and her story coalesced as I went along playing the game. I’ll cobble together some snippets from previous posts that can be found in her tag on my blog.

Julia is a most knightly knight, chilvalric and noble by birth and to her core. She leads with action, example, and proves herself with deeds. She’s not a great orator, she was never destined to be a Queen, but it’s hard to find a soldier who can inspire more loyalty and valour than the Lady Blackbrooke, Knight of Brightwater.

She’s honest, forthright, skeptical and kind.

Julia spent her living years as a Paladin of Lordaeron and lady of a vassal house that served the Menethil family faithfully.

She bore one child out of wedlock, a son, at a young age and had to send him away to live with a family friend.

Later she had a daughter.

She died when the undead Scourge sacked Lordaeron and was raised on the battlefield as a Death Knight.

She served in the Lich King’s army for years as a commander, able to raise new dead and knights, until the knights of the Ebon Blade were freed.

Through the story since Wrath she has served in the Alliance army, leading both living troops and a cohort of Alliance-loyal Ebon Blade knights.

She is a Deathlord, highest rank of the Ebon Blade undead knights and frequent critic of/counterbalance to Bolvar.

I like to connect my OCs together and imagine their stories like the cast of a novel or show, and her family- House Blackbrooke- is ancient and honourable. It has ties to elves, other human kingdoms, and was deeply mourned when it was seemingly wiped out during the Scourge of Lordaeron.

Her firstbirn son, Ballard, was raised by the Summerkeep family. He is a scholar and explorer and lives quietly in Dalaran with his partner Reko (my friend heychief’s character).

Julia’s daughter Geneveive is newly returned to the life by the grace of a red dragon, and has stayed with the Horde that sheltered her when she was one of the Forsaken.

Julia herself has found some happiness with a large brash man named Rorred (also heychief’s OC), whose village she destroyed when she was under the Lich King’s control, and his companionship has helped her reconnect with the world again. 

I think the next part of her story will involve reconnecting with her children, but I’m not sure how it’ll go! I just like thinking about them all a lot :)

In Monster of the Week:

Sunny (Sunsheighne Lydeighah Suarez) is a Monster of the Week character. She's 22 and bubbly and petty and and so, so, so, so, so, so stupid. Barbie Girl without the Barbie Accomplishments. Sunny started out as the Spooky playbook but has since migrated to the Chosen playbook - she's got the Green Dragon Crescent Blade and is maybe sort of the antichrist a little bit. She takes Every Drug. She's Mexican-Chinese and grew up in a trailer in Texas. She's so good at magic and hitting things, and so bad at thinking. She has phoenix ancestry and also was cursed. Normal girl things.

One of her moms is a failed country rock star and the other is a dragon. One of her dads is a cranky old monster hunter who turned into a god, and her sort-of other dad is a lich. Her brother has anxiety and is also a dragon, but is actually just a stressed college student with a band.

Sunny is engaged to a fae who is also Bees. She also has a girlfriend who is a crack shot and who enjoys accounting, and who we just unbrainwashed from a vampire tree. Sunny also has So many phone numbers.

Right now she's road tripping with her family (blood and adopted) across America as they break into the library of congress, try and fail to rob banks, and blow up a water tower to flood a town.

Sunny's ex-girlfriend was Audi Mercedes Windsor. Audi died, but Audi's fetch - her death omen, basically, like a changeling/copy only meant to survive til the original's death - survived, and got named Mercy Benjamin. I'm also playing Mercy - she's the Monstrous playbook.

Audi was the adopted daughter of an extremely rich film director, and most of Audi's life was filmed as she was trained very carefully to be picture perfect onscreen, and was exploited as basically a show dog. She was actually a mean selfish bitch, so Mercy is too - but Mercy is currently learning how to be a person and not an asshole. Audi was also in Sunny's brother's band, and Mercy in some canons is tentatively as well. She's roadtripping with the others, trying to avoid being noticed that she looks just like the dead rich girl splashed across billboards and magazines.

Jaime de Villiers is also one of my MotW characters in another campaign. They… are sort of three people fused into one. One of their component parts is a demon general named Kokabiel, who was the only true death in the war between heaven and hell. They wanted to be a perfect soldier and stand up for what they thought was right, as well as avenge their dead human spouse and child, but jumped in front of an attack meant for their commander and died, and became a ghost until summoned by their second component part by accident VERY long after, and the two fused.

Second component part is [redacted].

Their third part is a fae Spanish / French pirate from 1700's Spain, named Jaime de Villiers. The original Jaime served as first mate under the Kokabiel Fusion, they fell in love, and terrorized the coasts, but eventually Kokabiel Fusion and Jaime both nearly died and fused in order to save their lives. Now they are One Person with some very weird life experiences.

They've spent most of the last few thousand years at sea, trying desperately to be alone and Not Exist. Now they've been dragged kicking and screaming into a weird small Michigan town full of cults and secret police and monsters and witches and more, to be with their family (original Jaime's grandmother is a vampire and has a whole line of descendants who are wonderful and insane) and Be Helpful. Jaime is bearing the company and forced morality as best they can, and to their immense horror is actually starting to have a good time and learn to be happy again bc of their family. They accidentally stabbed their beloved cousin in the chest when they tried to kill The Actual Devil, but it's okay bc their cousin just became a goddess. Also they're now dating their old commander they died for, which is cool.

Another MotW character is Hector Carnage, who is a butch drummer in the up and coming band Bubblegum ☆ Carnage. She used to be a hockey player until a permanent hip injury screwed her out of her contract and now she's living her best life with her three insane bandmates. They’re about to play the weirdest craziest concert ever.

My last MotW character is Crescendo ‘Cres’ Flair, a.k.a Woebegone Lightfoot, a.k.a Harmony Caravaggio, a.k.a Beowulf Sublime, a.k.a Ophelia Divine, a.k.a - you get it. They go through new names every few months to Avoid the Government. They're a genderqueer Flake who uses they/he/she. He's also a sixty year old full out victorian goth with garrote wire and some wild conspiracy theories. Right now a hunter-for-hire, basically. She grew up on a dairy farm in Iowa.

Other than the MotW characters I'm playing now, I do have a scattered few others but I never did use them a whole lot. Here's a few,I can't remember all of them right now.

Daisy Smith is a fallen Aasimar who is sworn to defend all retail workers, is overly emotional and naive and genuinely kind/sweet, and also is a scary as hell warlock. Her patron is an eldritch horror of luck who looks like a bowling alley carpet.

Umami is a half-orc ranger with a panther familiar who I wanted to develop more but got shafted in the short campaign I got to play her and I'm still bitter about that.

At one point I had a rock dwarf who was a rockstar but I don't even remember her name. But I did love the concept.

And finally. Deco is my Baldurs's Gate character. Because I started playing Baldurs's Gate a week ago (no spoilers, please). That's basically a ttrpg. They're a Seldarine Drow, a druid from the circle of the spores. They became a druid because of the beauty they found in the Underdark nature, and because of their views on the beauty of death as a part of the circle of life and nature. Deco also is a decent leader, very forward, a little violent, and striving for true neutral if they can't hit neutral good. And they are absolutely going to smooch the shit out of Karlach.

A new search for rp friends!

I decided that it's high time I make a blog SPECIFICALLY for writing, since I do so much of it. It seems odd to have my fandom/regular blog or one of my aesthetic or resource blogs have RP searches run through it... and there hasn't been much success for me doing it that way either. I figure, heck, when I get the writing itch and decide to put together a blurb, be it fiction or nonfiction, I can slap it in this bad boy and label it as a sample or something. Aaaand.... I can also post about actual RPs I'm in, post searches.... you know. As you do. So anyways!! I'm Disco, 30, nb, and use they/them. I prefer writing semilit to lit, but am aware that sometimes plot doesn't call for massive amounts of text. I'd rather us move our story along in a way that feels good than get stuck in a loop of mirroring or dialogue just to fill up space. I'm fine with ghosting, so don't worry about that with me. I'll rp pretty much anywhere, but usually it's on discord. I enjoy both fandoms and originals. I'll play any gender/role for the most part, and am open to canons, ocs, you name it. re: how did I even find that post: I went through ALL of the tumblr search results for Lorroakan at some point. I AM insane about him, but there's also not that much to go through.

I went through all of the Minthara tumblr searches before I started this blog, I checked all the tags. I was starving for anything. So I feel you, I'll definitely start including him more in my "several characters" works.

And yes that's what I had in mind about reader! Being in college with him. Be it college for wizards or just an unrelated degree he was pursuing at the time. But like think fantasy college? With balls, gowns and suits? I wanted to have that romanticised dark academia fantasy with him.

You meet him there and start dating after becoming friends? Maybe Lorroakan was charming yes but kinda of insufferable to be around because he is one of those smart people who thinks being a genius excuse being rude.

And you were one of the few people who didn't take shit from him, at first you were enemies type of deal but eventually an attraction matured between you too. Because oh, you realised you find him talking down to you kinda hot and he realised how you're the only person willing to tolerate him and spend time with him.

Then actual feelings beyond lust or loneliness develop, where you open to one another, start enjoying each other's company. He gets used to your nagging and you get used to his insufferable attitude. You have a perfect dynamic where only you two can understand each other.

He opens up to you about his fear of dying, how he has been doing research and reading any book he can get his hands on. He tells you how he fears losing his humanity if he becomes a lich or a vampire so those options of immortality are off the table. How he fears losing his passion for knowledge and magic, fears not remembering his love for you.

So he wants a way to keep his soul and min intetact but achieve immortality. And no not become a god, he sees it also as losing his humanity, same thing with being a God's chosen, they're nothing more than lapdogs.

💖 [Heart] What is your favorite moment in this WIP?

It's legitimately hard to choose, but I guess that's what happens when I write a robot enemies to friends story dressed up as a post-apoc story, haha. Every scene between Rhys and Jonathan is so much fun to write but I especially love writing the early conflict scenes. Rhys has grown up believing that androids turned against humanity and Jonathan, having been powered down since before the supposed betrayal, just wants to continue serving humanity like he was programmed to. Both of them feel powerless to stand up to the authority figures in their lives (Rhys with her family and Jonathan with humans since they can literally do whatever they want with him). One scene in particular, Rhys thinks it would solve all her problems to just get rid of him but ends up realizing they might be more alike than she'd care to admit. You can even have a snippet :D

Rhys held the gun steady. "Did you speak to any of my family?" "No, I didn't." Jonathan paused and seemed to measure his words. "But I suppose, if I had to guess, I would say Carmady thinks the lich would be well served by conduits loyal to his cause. That is the only reason I could see for why she would keep me." "So you'd betray us." "I would do as I'm programmed. With a hard reset, I could be made an enemy to humanity, yes, though not in the way you claim androids betrayed your people in the past. They would not do so because they were evil, but because their original commands had been overridden. So yes, I could very well be the thing you fear, but I am not because you found me first. You activated me and ordered me to take no one's commands but your own. "Yes, I am a regulator and it...unnerves me to not have a conduit to serve. While I believe it would substantially increase our chances of survival, whether or not you become a conduit is entirely up to you. "But if you choose to become a conduit, there needs to be a trust between us. For a conduit without a regulator cannot survive and a regulator without a conduit is meaningless. Whatever you decide, I cannot go against it. Order me to power down and I will. Or if you wish to shoot me, then do so. I lack the authority to object."

This is my favorite form of procrastination. I absolutely love making pinterest boards for my WIPs and UTOPIA is no exception. I also enjoy making youtube playlists of songs that I think fit certain characters or, most likely, songs that would go great for specific scenes if my WIP were a movie. The UTOPIA playlist is mostly symphonic metal with a few instrumentals thrown in.

'//Hrm. I really enjoy this reference as I've considered a reptilian goblin like character for maybe a Rogue of some kind as Nibbles was fun and all but she kind of fell through a bit. Maybe go more murdery with this one as Ash's personality type for her always been you verse has kind of grown on me that I may manifest it in different other ways mayhaps hm.

Quick Physical descriptor: covered in scars, muscular but her subtle scale hide keeps it hidden it more so than a human's fat would combined with her own fat- her muscles can show if she flexes hard enough which is more in line with a lizard's body structure if you've ever seen that. Has bagged eyes and glowing purple eyes compared to her race's natural eye color from being born as a magic user toward undeath. A relatively thick and stocky body, built-like a honey badger for her species as while she's a Necromancer? DnD based Clerics (The usual necromancer class other than wizard) get up close and scrap. She's no different to this exception along with her minions, but tends to grapple like an oversized bob-cat and maul and tear out the throat or entrails with front or back claws recreationally when hunting or dealing with trivial enemies. Magic is used for actual threats and pretty seamlessly and easily when scrapping.

Inspiration: eh dnd and I just saw them around and was looking for a good reference. I will admit the voice is from my Ash for inspiration but I took the accent from the Orks in 40k bc I like them a lot. He will get a 40k verse and Warhammer as a Weird Boy and look a more in line in terms of gritty and grungy looking. A 'Weird Boy' which is basically a magic person for the Orks for context etc granted Warhammer I feel like they're called something else but I'll just wing it. I may even base her magic off it to some extent for how the Orks work because it's funny, but we'll see how much I do.

Her name will be Izzy, but full name Iz'rak Lumbah Bitah as she's a master carpenter and is a crafter of sorts in making shitty junk and contraptions that somehow work but just a savant when it comes to necromancy... to the point where most necromancers even liches would get a run for their money. Though I think I'll use my level caps as a request for dnd-esque character at lvl 10 so she can interact with other characters that want to fight her, but messing with her is fine for any verse. Just expect to bleed potentially or get non-lethally mauled. She's a 'bitah' after all and evil, playful but also extremely violent. She tends to like people alive though as forms of 'chew toys' to tussle with.

Oooooh side characters... that's a good question... I think I'll pick my fav side character from my most recent fandoms, one from each.

5) (Doctor Who) Missy- This incarnation of the Master is always very fun to watch, because her actress Michelle Gomez absolutely spends every second chewing the scenery clear off the walls. I also always enjoyed how they gave her a clear character arc in the seasons she appeared in- plus, it was lovely to see an incarnation of the Master who wasn't clear-cut "evil" as past ones have been, but rather Chaotic Neutral, and just in the game for the benefit of herself.

4) (The Legend of Zelda) Revali. A lot of the gaming community drags on this one, but I think there's a ton of interesting threads one can pull from what little we get of him in BotW canon that lend towards a fascinating picture of an incredibly insecure young warrior who's lashing out against someone (Link) who he sees as gaining everything he ever wanted but never working a second for it, as opposed to his hard, years-long struggle in perfecting his special flying ability. It's sad, in the end- because had he realized that Link was burdened by his own destiny and worked just as hard as he had to himself feel "deserving" of it, I bet they might've been able to find something to connect over, and became friends.

3) (The Adventure Zone) Barry Bluejeans- Goddammnit, FUCK YOU BARRY BLUEJEANS for having such a stupid ass name and making me CRY over you in just one 5 minute prologue! I really, really love this NPC... there's such a deep tragedy to his story- losing his wife and his whole found family and not even being able to remember that they're gone while in human form- and yet, every time he dies and goes back into lich form and remembers it all, still he manages to pick himself up and try again. Work harder. Work smarter. Set himself up for success each time he clones himself and returns to his human form to make his plan work. He fights tirelessly for YEARS without an ounce of thanks just because he loves his family and the world they've entered so much that he wants to make sure they'll all be safe, in the end. What a man.

2) (Gravity Falls) Fiddleford McGucket- For such an otherwise funny but unremarkable joke character back in season 1, it was amazing how the writers were ultimately able to transform him into such a tragic figure, and utilize him to give context to why the whole town literally pays no heed to any of the weirdness going on all around them. He's the sort of character who gives the show amazing re-watch energy- at this point, when I go back through the show, every single appearance he has just makes me feel incredibly sad- AND a lot of his otherwise "random" or "quirky" characteristics start to make a lot more sense. He's a man who lives in the dump, but is capable of building incredibly complex machines?" He's a literal genius mechanic who's simply gone through severe memory slippage. Said memory slippage? Self-inflicted by a memory erasing device he invented himself. Said memory erasing device? Has been used in the years since to purge the town of their memories of the supernatural. His backstory blasts open a whole new door of lore possibilities in this show. Love him.

1) (Steven Universe) Connie Connie Connie Connie Connie- Connie, my LOVE- I feel like by the end of the show she's grown into more of a main character than just a side, but that shows perhaps just HOW much wonderful development she gets throughout her journey. She grew from a timid young girl unsure of herself and her place in the world around her, to a fierce teen who has purpose, ambitions, and has a whole constellation of connections and confidants ready to cheer her on. I'm really proud of her <3

Every single time she showed up on screen for a new episode I got like, indescribably happy and went "damn this is going to be a good one," and basically every single SU reactor I've seen has had the same experience, so I think that alone shows how beloved Connie is, and how well written a character she is too. It's always great to have such a grounded presence amidst characters living in a world of fantasy.

T Kingfisher - Paladin's Hope

Book 3 of the 'Saint of Steel' series

Another book, another paladin romance. I imagine these books are going to work through the entire set of the surviving Saint of Steel paladins (Their god died before the start of book 1. It was Traumatic, and there are only about 7 of them left).

This time, it was the turn of Galen, the gay paladin who goes berserk if you wake him up from a nightmare. That was about all I knew about him going into the book, and to be honest I don't know much more about him having reached the end. He spends most of the book thinking about other people, in a way which leaves his own character pretty vague.

Galen's love interest is Piper, a lich doctor who choses to work on figuring out what killed people so he doesn't have to deal with humans being emotional as he tries to save people. He's very good at his job, partly because if he touches a dead body he can feel its last living moments. He's also vegetarian, because his magic applies to animals as well.

Galen, Piper, and a gnole (badger-like critter with human level intelligence) spend most of the book navigating a maze full of death traps. It's entertaining enough, but I didn't find it as compelling as the adventures in the first two books. I did enjoy the last part where they band together with the other paladins to deal with a bit of anti-gnole racism, mostly because of the other paladins.

And then right at the end, there is a Clue towards solving the mystery of the dead god, and while it wasn't quite as bad as ending on a cliffhanger, it annoyed me because it still felt like they didn't trust the readers to read the next book without it.

In summary, it's a fun read but weaker than the first two books. Paladin angst can get quite repetitive, and we're only on book 3 of 7. Still gonna keep reading them, though.

BnHA Chapter 318: On Your Left

Previously on BnHA: The Hawksquad+Lurkers were all “well this sucks” and sat around a bit talking about how maybe they should actually come up with a new plan that is actually good, but then in the end they were like “nah.” Deku was all, “THERE’S SOMETHING INSIDE ME THAT PULLS BENEATH THE SURFACE!! CONSUMING, CONFUSING!! THIS LACK OF SELF CONTROL I FEAR IS NEVERENDING. IT’S HAUNTING HOW I CANT SEEM TO FIND MYSELF AGAIN. MY WALLS ARE CLOSING IN.” Just, literally that whole entire song. All Might was all “Deku you should take care of yourself, try eating a thing,” and Deku was all “BYE, ALL MIGHT,” and just LEFT. He left!!! What the fuck!!!

Today on BnHA: Endeavor is all, “maybe if Deku didn’t listen to All Might he’ll listen to me instead.” Deku is all, “[doesn’t listen to Endeavor]” because, well, yeah. The Vestiges are all, “surprisingly, even we are a little concerned -- maybe you should get some rest, kid.” Deku is all, “((Ò ‸ Ó)).” The Vestiges are all, “holy shit.” Deku is all, “[wanders the ruined city streets terrifying the populace on account of him looking like Shelob had a baby with one of the Nazgul].” Some shriveled-up puppeteer villain asshole is all, “HORIKOSHI SAID IT’S MY TURN TO ATTACK DEKU TODAY SO I AM GOING TO SUMMON MY FRIGHTENED HELPLESS ATTACK MOB!!” Kacchan is all “WHADDYA MEAN THEY FOUND THE NERD!!! -- oh wait, that’s me, I found him. and then all of a sudden through that haze, he hears the one voice that’s more familiar than any other that he knows. like, I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if he thought he was just imagining it at first. Kacchan showing up to save him right when he’s at his most desperate and feeling the most alone. Kacchan, showing up to save him.

this is the person he always looked up to as a child (to be fair he was quite a strange child lmao). the person who was even closer to him than All Might. the person he always thought was amazing. and bam, here he is now. appearing in the sky out of nowhere to one-shot the bad guy with a single blast (which, btw, that was his armor-piercing attack too lmao dslkjlk take it easy there kiddo). like, that must have felt absolutely surreal to him, especially coming at a time when he’s already half-delirious and barely hanging on to reality. he must have really thought that he was losing it there for a second.

but he’s really there. it really is him. and for this brief moment -- before the rest of the situation catches up to him, and he remembers about all of the fucked-up AFO stuff, and remembers why he was so afraid and why he was pushing everyone away -- for just this one brief moment, he’s too exhausted and stunned to do anything except to just react. just stands there, looking up at him in awe.

and you know, it almost reminds me of...

just. you guys. the character development. the freaking character development. someone who brings reassurance. someone who shows up and makes you think, “oh, it’s all going to be okay now, because [person] is here.” the role reversals. the growth. the payoff!! because who is the one person who always had faith that Kacchan would one day grow up to become an amazing hero like that. WHO IS IT. YOU ALREADY KNOW.

I had an idea for an elven wizard who’d been trapped in a demiplane for a thousand years. Time did pass in the demiplane, just at a fifth normal speed, so she’d aged two hundred years in a thousand, well within the lifespan of an elf. It just means that she’s extremely lost and out of date when she finally escapes, and also that she’s spent two thirds of her life so far imprisoned in a relatively tiny house with no one but books and a familiar for company. She speaks perfectly fine Elvish, but very archaic Common as a result, and is more than a little weird.

And it’s slowly revealed over time that she didn’t get stuck in that demiplane by herself. She was tricked, betrayed and locked there by someone she had trusted. Someone she had loved. Though she curiously doesn’t hold it much against them …

“Art villain, then?”

“What do you think, lady?”

“I was ever fond of villains. ‘Course, twas that fondness that left me imprisoned. Not a wise appreciation, perhaps. But … deeply enjoyable. No?”

“Er …”

She had loved a fellow apprentice when they were studying together. She had found him roguish and intriguing and ambitious. And certainly he seemed to find her equally entrancing. They had enjoyed each other deeply. But he had plans, and dreams, and ideas that seemingly never included her. The first she knew of them was when the portal of their shared demiplane rippled and sealed shut behind her. Imprisoning her for two hundred years. At least from her own viewpoint.

From his, it has been a thousand. And he has changed quite a bit in the meantime. Lichdom, undeath, has been somewhat less kind than time dilation.

I find I’m just quite enchanted with the idea of this strange, golden scholar, confused and a thousand years out of time, finally encountering the grand evil she has semi-accidentally been drafted to fight, this great lich that threatens all the world, and … recognising him. Something of him. A familiar spark of roguish villainy and ambition, hardened into monstrous evil.

“Evil hath not been kind to thy features, beloved. Thou wast much kinder to mine.”

And that was the goal. They had been students of a great diviner, once upon a time, students of prophecy and divination. He had seen something, something terrible in the centuries and millennia to come that he desperately needed her to avoid, that he needed not to touch her. So he had sealed her away. Out of love. Seven hundred years, elves can live. With time slowed to a fifth inside the demiplane, he would have had nearly three thousand years to solve whatever problem he had foreseen.

Well. As long as he could find a way for him to survive as well. Survive and act, without the safety of sealing himself away. And therein lay the problem.

Power corrupts, and so does undeath. He has become a lich. He has become truly evil, devouring souls to preserve himself. And he hasn’t solved the problem yet. Destruction, the horror he had foreseen all those centuries ago, yet beckons. And she managed to get out early. She managed to escape back out into a world where that horror can touch her. Destroy her. And he has had a thousand years of corruption and solutions powered by stolen souls to all his problems.

What is a lich to do, when the one creature he yet loves defies him and stands in the face of prophesied destruction despite his best efforts? What is he to do, when the remnants of his shattered soul only partly remember how to love?

What is a lich to do? And how much does a wizard, and a prophetess in her own right, allow him?

 I don’t know, I just feel like liches should have more tragic loves knocking around. Undeath grants such gulfs of time. Have some surviving, long-lost fragments of humanity cross it. Have them survive, improbably, and call to question everything the lich has come to know over centuries of evil.

okay yeah actually, i’ll bite. i’ve got some of my own thoughts about the unsleeping city and cultural representation and i’m gonna make a post about them now, i guess. i’ll put it under a cut though because this post is gonna be long.

i wanna start by saying i love dimension 20 and i really really enjoy the unsleeping city. i look forward to watching new episodes every week, and getting hooked on d20 as a whole last summer really helped pull me out of a pandemic depression, and i’m grateful to have this cool show to be excited about and interested in and to have met so many cool people to talk about it with.

that being said, however, i think there is a risk run in representing any group of people/their culture when you have the kind of setting that tuc has. by which i mean, tuc is set in a real world with real people and real human cultures in it. unlike fantasy high or a crown of candy where everything is made up (even if rooted in real-world cultures), tuc is explicitly rooted in reality, and all of its diversity -- both the ups and downs that go with it. and especially set in new york of all places, one of the most densely, diversely populated cities on earth. the cast is 7 people; it’s great that those 7 people come from a variety of backgrounds and identities and all bring their own unique perspectives to the table, and it’s great that those people and the entire crew are generally conscious of themselves and desire to tell stories/represent perspectives ethically. but you simply cannot authentically represent every culture or every perspective in the world (or even just in a city) when your cast is 7 people. it’s an impossible task. this is inherent to the setting, and acknowledged by the cast, and by brennan especially, who has been on record saying how one of the exciting aspects of doing a campaign set in nyc is its diversity, the fact that no two new yorkers have the same perspective of new york. i think that’s a good thing -- but it does have its challenges too, clearly.

i’m not going to go into detail on the question of whether or not tuc’s presentation of asian and asian american culture is appropriative/offensive or not. first of all, i don’t feel like it’s 100% fair to judge the show completely yet, since it’s a prerecorded season and currently airing midseason, so i don’t yet know how things wrap up. secondly, i’m not asian or asian american. i can have my own opinions on that content in the show, but i think it’s worth more to hear actual asian and asian american voices on this specific aspect of the show. having an asian american cast member doesn’t automatically absolve the show of any criticisms with regard to asian american cultural representation/appropriation, whether those criticisms are made by dozens of viewers or only a handful of them. regardless, i don’t think it’s my place as someone who is not asian to speak with any authority on that issue, and i know for a fact that there are asian american viewers sharing their own opinions. their thoughts in this instance hold more water than mine, i think.

what i will comment on in more depth, though, is a personal frustration with tuc. i’m jewish; i’ve never really been shy about that fact on my page here. i’m not from new york, but i visit a few times a year (or i did before covid anyway, lol), and i have some family from nyc. nyc, to me, is a jewish city. and for good reason, since it’s home to one of the largest jewish populations of the country, and even the world, and aspects of jewish culture (including culinary, like bagels and pastrami, and linguistic, like the common use of yiddish words and phrases in english colloquial speech) are prevalent and celebrated among jews and goyim alike. when i think of nyc, i think of a jewish city; that’s not everybody’s new york, but that’s my new york, and thats plenty of other people’s new york too. so i do find myself slightly disappointed or frustrated in tuc for its, in my opinion, rather stark lack of jewish representation.

now, i’m not saying that one of the PCs should have been jewish, full stop. i love to headcanon iga as jewish even though canon does not support that interpretation, and i’m fine with that. she’s not my character. it’s possible that simply no one thought of playing a jewish character, i dunno. but also, and i can’t be sure about this, i’m willing to bet that none of the players really wanted to play a jewish character because they didn’t want to play a character of a marginalized culture they dont belong to in the interest of avoiding stereotyping or offensive representation/cultural appropriation. (i don’t know if any of the cast members are jewish, but i’m assuming not.) and the concern there is certainly appreciated; there’s not a ton of mainstream jewish rep out there, and often what we get is either “unlikeable overly conservative hassidic jew” or “jokes about their bar mitzvah/one-off joke about hanukkah and then their jewishness is never mentioned ever again,” which sucks. it would be really cool to see some more good casual jewish rep in a well-rounded, three-dimensional character in the main cast of a show! even if there are a couple of stumbles along the way -- nobody is perfect and no two jews have the same level of knowledge, dedication, and adherence to their culture.

but at the same time, i look at characters like iga and i really do long for a jewish character to be there. siobhan isn’t polish, yet she’s playing a characters whose identity as a polish immigrant to new york is very central to her story and arc. and part of me wonders why we can’t have the same for a jewish character. if not a PC, then why not an NPC? again, i’m jewish, and i am not native, but in my opinion i think the inclusion of jj is wonderful -- i think there are even fewer native main characters in mainstream media than there are jewish ones, and it’s great to see a native character who is both in touch with their culture as well as not being defined solely by their native-ness. to what extent does it count as ‘appropriative’ because brennan is a white dude? i dunno, but i’m like 99% sure they talked to sensitivity consultants to make sure the representation was as ethical as they could get it, and anyway, i can’t personally see and glaring missteps so far. but again, i’m not native, and if there are native viewers with their own opinions on jj, i’d be really interested in hearing them.

but getting back to the relative lack of jewish representation. it just...disappoints me that jewishness in new york is hardly ever even really mentioned? again, i know we’re only just over halfway through season 2, but also, we had a whole first season too. and it’s definitely not all bad. for example: willy! gd, i love willy so much. him being a golem of williamsburg makes me really really happy -- a jewish mythological creature animated from clay/mud (in this case bricks) to protect a jewish community (like that of williamsburg, a center for many of nyc’s jews) from threat. golem have so often been taken out of their original context and turned into evil monsters in fantasy settings, especially including dnd. (even within other seasons of d20! crush in fh being referred to as a “pavement golem” always rubbed me the wrong way, and i had hoped they’d learned better after tuc but in acoc they refer to another monster as a “corn golem” which just disappointed me all over again.) so the fact that tuc gets golems right makes my jewish heart very happy.

and yet...he doesn’t show up that much? sure, in s1, he’s very helpful when he does, but in s2 so far he shows up once and really does not say or do much of anything. he speaks with a lot more yiddish-influenced language than other characters, but if you didn’t know those words were specifically yiddish/jewish, you might not be able to otherwise clock the fact that willy is jewish. and while willy is a jewish mythological creature who is jewish in canon, he isn’t human. there are no other direct references to judaism, jewish characters, or jewish culture in the unsleeping city beyond him.

there are, in fact, two other canon jewish characters in tuc. but...here’s where i feel the most frustration, i think. the two canon jewish humans in tuc are stephen sondheim and robert moses. both of whom are real actual people, so it’s not like we can just pick and choose what their cultural backgrounds are. as much as i love stephen sondheim, i think there are inherent issues with including real world people as characters in a fictional setting, especially if they are from living/recent memory (sondheim is literally still alive), but anyway, sondheim and moses are both actual jewish people. from watching tuc alone you probably would not be able to guess that sondheim is jewish -- nothing from his character except name suggests it, and i wouldn’t even fault you for not thinking ‘sondheim’ is a jewish-sounding surname (and i dislike the idea/attitude/belief that you can tell who is or isn’t jewish by the sound of their name). and yeah, i’m not going to sit here and be like “brennan should have made sondheim more visibly jewish in canon!” because, like, he’s a real human being and it’s fucking weird to portray him in a way that isn’t as close to how he publicly presents himself, which is not in fact very identifiably jewish? i don’t know, this is what i mean by it’s inherently weird and arguably problematic to portray real living people as characters in a fictional setting, but i digress. sondheim’s jewish, even if you wouldn’t know it; not exactly a representation win.

and then there’s bob moses. you might be able to guess that he’s jewish from canon, actually. there’s the name, of course. but more insidious to me are the specifics of his villainy. greedy and powerhungry, a moneyman, a lich whose power is stored in a phylactery...it does kind of all add up to a Yikes from me. (in the stock market fight there’s a one-off line asking if he has green skin; it’s never really directly acknowledged or answered, but it made me really uncomfortable to hear at first and it’s stuck with me since viewing for the first time.) the issue for me here is that the most obviously jewish human character is the season’s bbeg, and his villainy is rooted in very antisemitic tropes and stereotypes.

i know this isn’t all brennan’s fault -- robert moses was a real ass person and he was in fact jewish, a powerhungry and greedy moneyman, a big giant racist asshole, etc. i’m not saying that jewish characters can’t be evil, and i’m not saying brennan should have tried to be like “this is my NPC robert christian he’s just like bob moses but instead he’s a goy so it’s okay” because...that would be fuckin weird bro. and bob moses was a real person who was jewish and really did do some heinous shit with his municipal power. i’m not necessarily saying brennan should have picked/created a different character to be the villain. i’m not even saying that he shouldn’t have made bob moses a lich (although, again, it doesn’t 100% sit right with me). but my point here is that bob moses is one of a grand total of three canon jewish characters in tuc, of which only two humans, of whom he is the one you’d most easily guess would be jewish and is the most influenced by antisemitic stereotypes/tropes. had there been more jewish representation in the show at all, even just some neutral jewish NPCs, this would not be as much of a problem as it is to me. but halfway through season 2, so far, this is literally all we get. and that bums me out.

listen, i really like tuc. i love d20. but the fact that it is set in a real world place with real world people does inherently raise challenges when it comes to ethical cultural representation. especially when the medium of the show is a game whose creatures, lore, and mechanics have been historically rooted in some questionable racial/cultural views. and dnd is making progress to correct some of those misguided views of older sourcebooks by updating them to more equitably reflect real world racial/cultural sensitivities; that’s a good thing! but these seasons, of course, were recorded before that. the game itself has some questionable cultural stuff baked into it, and that is (almost necessarily) going to be brought to the table in a campaign set in a real-world place filled with real-world people of diverse real-world cultures. the cast can have sensitivity consultants and empathy and the best intentions in the world, and they’ll still fuck up from time to time, that’s okay. your mileage may vary on whether or not it’s still worth sticking around with the show (or the fandom) through that. for me, it does not yet outweigh all the things i like about the show, and i’m gonna continue watching it. but it’s still very worth acknowledging that the cast is 7 people who cannot possibly hope to authentically or gracefully represent every culture in nyc. it’s an unfortunate limitation of the medium. yet it’s also still worthwhile to acknowledge and discuss the cultural representation as it is in the show -- both the goods and the bads, the ethically solid and the questionably appropriative -- and even to hold the creators accountable. (decently, though. i’m definitely not advocating anybody cyberbully brennan on twitter or whatever.) the show and its representation is far from perfect, but i also don’t think it ever could be. still, though, it could always be better, and there’s a worthwhile discussion to be had in the wheres, hows, and whys of that.

Taako

I'm fucking here for ticklish wizards, its all of them no one knows why its probably a class feature or whatever

Dude is ticklish as fuck, no question about it, he hates when people know it though. So what a fuckin trip it is when Magnus and Merle need no invitation to tackle him out of nowhere. As much of a hardass as he is about it around groups he cannot hide that he likes it one on one even a little. Kravitz finds out almost immediately after they start dating, mostly thanks to Magnus and Angus. 

His worst spot is probably his thighs or his ribs, but you'd never know it since he screams if you even think about going for his ears. He’s pretty screechy about the whole ordeal, cursing out whomever has decided to tackle him and take him down a peg, at least for the first three minutes or so, until he just cant keep it up and just lies there and takes it. 

As a ler he is more than fucking ready to waste spell slots on this shit do not test him. Teasing only flusters him but god if he doesn't give whomever he’s tickling the smuggest look he can muster. He is ruthless about his revenge, gotta keep up appearances and all that. 

Lup

She's a goddamn monster, however fucking ruthless Taako is Lup is 20x worse. She doesn't even bother wasting spell slots, she just throws people to the ground, she has taken magnus down, there is no escape from her. Her nails are killer, and she knows it. 

Being a lich has kinda messed with her sensitivity, she used to be just as ticklish as taako, but now she’s barely ticklish in most places. Her stomach, sides and her ears are pretty much the only places that will really get her laughing now. She is a squirmer, she’ll fight you, and probably get the upper hand before you can even blink. 

She loves it, openly, thinks its fun and is a good way to get her more serious team members to open up more, Lucretia. Lup and Magnus are a force to be reckoned with even to each other, they both are total lers, no one is safe from them if they're together. 

Magnus

He’s a total teddy bear. No other word for it, he loves tickling his friends but he’d rather stab his foot and stare at the bloody wound than overstep and hurt somebody. He generally stayed away from roughhousing with the crew for the first few years, even longer with Lucretia, Davenport and Barry. he really didn't want to overstep. 

That being said, once he’s sure whos comfortable with what, he is unstoppable. God, when he finds out the twins like it, he has a field day! They don't escape his grip for a good 48 hours before he calms down about it. He is very much about lightly pinning and just going to town, it’s his favorite. 

The teddy analogy works both ways, dude has the cutest of worst spots. His stomach is killer, his underarms make him curl into a ball. his hands are too worn to be ticklish but his wrists are surprisingly sensitive. (Julia loved that one) 

Merle

Terrible old man, horrible. He’s very smug about knowing the starblaster crews spots by heart. No one knows how he knows, or where he got the information, he claims pan gave it to him if asked, but its bullshit. He keeps this knowledge after having his memory wiped, and Lucretia is more than surprised when Merle tweaks her knee before he has his memory back, Merle is equally as confused why the director made a sound like she swallowed a snail when he did it.  

It’s equally as confusing for Magnus and Taako when Merle leans back and yells out spots for Magnus to try when he has Taako pinned, especially when they're spots even Taako forgot he had. 

He is the only one who even knows Davenport is ticklish, and he has been sworn to secrecy (something he takes very seriously). 

Lucretia 

Starblaster baby, she’s the youngest of them of course she is a target for tickle attacks. After the first few years, once she starts warming up to the crew she seals her fate. She leaned into a Magnus hug one too many times and now she will never be respected again. 

She is a baby about tickling too, cant take it at all. Her knees are the worst, and she kicks. Lord knows Magnus has gotten a chipped tooth or two from that. Once she loses some of her life in Wonderland she is almost content that her ticklishness fled with her youth, she is proven incredibly wrong once she hires Merle, Magnus and Taako. 

She’s they're bloody boss now and they still treat her like their younger sister, if she weren't so endeared she might be mad about it. They poke and prod at her whenever they get the chance, try and get her to break her serious facade.  

Davenport

No one but merle even knows he’s ticklish, and he will keep it like that. That is not a promise it’s a threat. 

Barry

For a dude with so many classes, he can’t defend himself for shit. No one even tried to see if he was ticklish for the first few years. Lup, of course, tried first and scored the absolute jackpot. 

He is the most ticklish person on the starblaster crew, rivaling Taako, and he absolutely had to pay the price for that. Up until he became a lich along with Lup he was one of the number one victims of tickle attacks. 

As a lich, he is not ticklish. however, unlike Lup, in a human vessel, he is almost more ticklish than before, to the point that is almost unbearable. The others really had to ease up on him after that, because it would get overwhelming. They still sneak in pokes here and there but only every once and a while. 

After losing his memory the sensitivity was something he had to deal with a lot, not just in the sense of tickling, everything felt more, which became overwhelming occasionally.  

Angus

Baby boy, baby. He is absolutely a walking tickle spot. He very much does not like it though. He is the worlds best detective, he’s also 10 but that's less important.

He knows its a important bonding tool for Taako, Magnus and Merle, so he indulges them a little. They know he’s not a major fan, so they lay off him more often than not.  He might grow into liking it more when he’s older and less concerned about being serious, but for now its not his favorite. 

He is, however, not above sleuthing out their worst spots and gleefully telling others, though. (such as Kravitz, of whom listens very intently as Angus explains just how much tickling means to Taako, while talking around Taako’s hand trying to get him to be quiet mind you, but that’s not important) 

Kravitz

Dude has been dead for a long ass while, he probably used to be ticklish, but he very much isn’t now, much to taako’s chagrin. Even after his heart starts again, he’s not very sensitive at all. You might be able to get him to laugh if you surprise him, his neck and back are just about the only places that could qualify as ticklish, and really only if he’s not expecting it. 

He does very much enjoy making Taako laugh though, and takes quite a lot of joy from having such an effective method of doing so. He doesn't really get into tickle fights with anyone else, though he’s interested in why becoming liches had such different affects on Lup and Barry. 

I don't have any comprehensive headcanons for amnesty unfortunately.

The Final Fantasy Pixel Shack is over! This was a lot of fun. I will definitely be doing more RPG monsters in the future, but next week will probably be a bit different.

Up top was my first entry, Tiamat. I went into this wanting to redraw the four fiends, but I got a bit carried away with her!

For my second entry, I decided to compensate a bit for having spent too long on Tiamat, and merged two of the 3 other fiends into...

Krakillith! Bringing together Kraken and Marillith! This one is still using too many color palettes, but its a lot closer to being realistic to NES limitations.

There has been a lot of great entries this week, let’s go over them after the jump:

First up, LandsharkRawr drew a very elegant, dashing take on Lich, so we do have the four fiends present in the end! This is based on an avatar character theyve been drawing a lot, with flowing, flaming green hair.

They also replaced the player party with adorable NES sprites of various D&D characters they’ve played with, three of which I reckognize. Made me wish I had redrawn the player characters on my entries a bit too. Maybe next time!

And here is a second entry from Landshark, a masked creature with a terrible winged demon for a lower body. The design gives some SMT vibes. It also seems very close to fitting the NES restrictions, nice work.

Axolotine also drew a Lich! This one sticks closer to the original. He’s also redrawn the party members, they look super good. The black and red mages are great here.

Gabriel Harju has drawn an eyeball creature holding bones, called “Itch”, fighting a party of Yani. Who doesnt love a good eyeball monster.

Jacob J. Ritz  Has drawn Garland as seen in the recent Final Fantasy trailer, as well as a sort of “demake” of that game into an NES style, really cool! I love the colors on Garland’s armor, it reminds me quite a bit of Exdeath from FF5. The flaming sword looks very nice too!

Lurdiak has drawn a strange ghostly creature, as well as NES styled takes on the FF7 main cast. I understand this is a bit of a joke on some problems he has with the Final Fantasy 7 Remake - but I haven’t finished that yet, so I don’t get it yet! Nobody spoil it for me, aight? I just fought the spooky house boss so far, Barely halfway through! :O

I believe this mesmerizing entry from Ryan Powser speaks for itself. Please enjoy. If you can summon the inner strength to move your gaze away from Ripper’s eyes, from Ripper’s TRUTH, perhaps we can move on to...

A sinister magician hermit called Gerald, from Will ! Always a fan of creatures with big, flat teeth. He has also submitted this one:

... that he calls a knight of thorns! Really nice, love that bucket-like helmet with holes, a good striking design. Nice pose, too. This one and the previous might be entirely possible to display as a Final Fantasy enemy too!

And here is a final one from Mr Taters, a pirate captain with a pair of pirates. I think thats the only entry with a party of multiple enemies, very nice.

here’s a long post about a bunch of webcomics i love and recommend. i’ve certainly read & liked other ones and have just lost track of them somehow but these are like, mostly classics that basically anyone who reads newer webcomics will recommend to you and a couple i’ve found more recently that i loved. tried to limit it to FAVES that update pretty regularly or are already completed so you can get quality stories out of it but it still ended up mammoth so uh, it’s goin’ under a readmore

namesake - super long-running comic with beautiful art, consistent and frighteningly frequent updates, made by Webcomics Pros. it’s about people who have the ability to enter the worlds of essentially any fairy tales in which the protagonists happen to share their name, and the lore only gets more intricate from there. this one is a very engaging archive binge as it’s been running for about a million years

gunnerkrigg court - honestly if you’re not already reading gunnerkrigg court i'd be very surprised since this is another one that’s been going easily since the invention of webcomics (not really, but THAT ARCHIVE!). i don’t know how to summarize it beyond saying it STARTS as a story about a girl attending a quirky boarding school and is now kind of a sweeping epic about the intersection of technology, nature, and divinity. there’s time travel or something in there now?! you will love renardine. i love renardine

paranatural - another one i’m sure you’re already reading and if not, WHY? it’s a fun li’l action-comedy about middle schoolers fighting ghosts with the help of other ghosts. has been running for a good while and gone through some weird changes but is also probably one of the funniest serial comics i’ve ever read

he is a good boy - a super weird, cerebral, since-finished comic by online comics vet KC Green, about a little acorn finally leaving the tree he grew on after it dies. this one has more “adult” content than any of the previous ones, but if you can handle some cartoony gore and obscenity it’s really funny, strange, and worth checking out

anything by evan dahm tbh - these come recommended by absolutely anyone with taste because evan dahm makes beautiful fantasy comics. rice boy and order of tales are both completed and have a bizarre, super-unique setting and bittersweet approach to these delicate, human stories (despite having no actual human characters). vattu is still currently running and is a slightly more grounded fantasy comic about a little girl from a nomadic hunter-gatherer culture getting caught up in the machinery of the empire that’s moving in on the land where she was born. cannot recommend these enough TBH

also anything on johnny wander - this site contains a bunch of comics by a couple of married comics pros; a big backlog of their really funny, charming autobio comics, the entirety of their graphic novel lucky penny, a whole bunch of shorter comics you might have seen around, and also their new, longer-form webcomic barbarous, which is about a wizard school dropout who’s appointed as a super at an apartment building full of weird magical folks. recommended because there’s a lot of quality stuff in there for you

the sword interval - on webtoon, completed. legit my favorite thing i’ve read in a hot minute. modern fantasy about a young woman who tracks down a legendary, but retired monster hunter for help on her quest to find and kill the lich-like being who killed her parents. gorgeous art, super awesome monster designs, twists on twists, characters you will never want anything bad to happen to ever. reggie the golem.

widdershins - a pretty well established comic i only just read recently. a series of connected stories following different characters from a big ensemble cast and their various adventures in a magical town in victorian west yorkshire. full of fun old-timey shit and wizards. i read it obsessively in like a day. super funny, super long archive. extremely endearing characters who you also will never want anything bad to happen to.

the last halloween - abby howard is a godly horror artist who’s been doing this comic since her style and sense of humor were almost completely different, but the story really does grow as it goes and is both very spooky and very funny. book one is about a little girl facing the potential extinction of humanity after the spontaneous appearance of billions of monsters. it’s currently in book 2, which is a direct sequel about different characters that actually updates sporadically at the moment because the artist is making other cool stuff. definitely still worth it though. gets intense as hell

string theory - this one got back into regular updates pretty recently! i’m linking the about page, not the homepage, because this one is about nasty people doing nasty things and there’s a few CWs that the author mentions right in the summary. it’s an alternate history sci-fi set in a near future where the USA was devastated by nuclear weapons after the cuban missile crisis but is mostly a character driven story about a jerkhole scientist having a terrible couple years. i can’t explain this one at all. if you like terrible men as much as i do you’ll probably enjoy it

tiger, tiger - a beautifully drawn maritime fantasy about a young noblewoman who impersonates her sea captain brother in order to launch an expedition to study sea sponges. there is a sexy nonbinary sea monster character if that sweetens the pot for you any. awesome, subtly integrated worldbuilding. super funny and charming. i love this one a whole bunch

bybloemen - i’m not just recommending this because i’m vague internet acquaintances with the author, it’s ALSO an extremely one-of-a-kind comic about the dutch tulip mania, and also demons. the art is gorgeous and the character designs are some of my favorites out there in newer webcomics. just kind of an extremely good concept that i think everyone should check out. and it’s funny, duh

mare internum - completed. an extremely affecting sci-fi set on Mars. you really just have to read this one, honestly. i’m also linking to the about page on this one because it contains CWs to keep in mind; it’s an incredibly well-constructed character study of some flawed, complicated people and also awesome if you like space aliens.

ozzie the vampire - another supernatural action-comedy because i know what i like, about a recently turned vampire girl and her best friend defending their small new jersey town from demons. super funny, super exciting, and really grounded and realistic for a story that’s about a vampire punching demons. the artist is also a superhuman wizard who draws a whole other comic, a shounen inspired action story called station square that you should check out if you end up liking ozzie.
