Breathe
Also I’m trying my hand at a permanent taglist… let me know if y’all want to be added!
Inhale.
Exhale.
Inhale.
Eddie had gone on before him. It wasn’t fair to keep him waiting, but, well… Steve had tried to warn him about smoking.
Exhale.
Inhale.
Steve’s eyes drop closed as he thinks over his life. It was good. Once Vecna was gone, once the hospital scare was over and done with, it was good.
Exhale.
Inhale.
They’d all grown up, separately but together. Robin and Nancy, surprisingly enough, had been the first to leave. Then one by one, the rest of the Part followed in different directions.
Exhale.
Inhale.
Robin and Nancy had moved to San Diego. Dustin and Suzie settled in Maine, of all places. Lucas and Max picked Florida. Will and Mike were closest in Indy. El and Erica—with whatever they had going on—were in Oklahoma, trying to find normalcy.
Exhale.
Inhale.
Steve and Eddie had bought an RV and traveled the country. Visited the kids. They were there for Dustin and Susie’s first kid (and second, and third). They were there when Nancy got her first journalist award. When Mike and Will tied the knot, even if it wasn’t exactly legal yet. When El and Erica needed some familiar faces. When Lucas and Max had gotten hitched. They’d even driven them to the airport, seen them off for their Colorado honeymoon.
Exhale.
Inhale.
Never any kids of their own, Steve reflects. Except in all the ways they did. Everyone had been there for Eddie. Crowded into the hospital room, annoying the fuck out of the hospital staff and uncaring, because that was their Eddie, their brother, their uncle, their grandpop.
Exhale.
Inhale.
Steve had seen memories flash through Eddie’s eyes, like they’re doing in Steve’s mind right now. Their first kiss, sun-drenched and summer-sweet, tentative and so, so hopeful.
Exhale.
Inhale.
When they bought the RV and visited everyone for the first time, rolled up in front of their houses and laid on the horn until someone had gotten annoyed enough to peep out the windows, only to run outside when they realized who it was.
Exhale.
Inhale.
Will and Mike first, since they were closest. Eddie and Steve had taken them out to a gay bar—a nicer one than they’d ever been to at the boys’ age—and had fun for a night. They’d stayed for a few days before making the trek up to Maine to see Dustin and Suzie. Skiing and dinner and loud laughs long into the night.
Exhale.
Inhale.
Then they’d gone to see Max and Lucas in Florida, getting horribly burned the first day and regretting it for the next few days. Max and Lucas had both made fun of them. Then a rather uncomfortable drive to Oklahoma to see the girls. El, who had been learning to cook, made them all dinner. They were introduced to May and Alex, two kids who had needed help. Eddie had put his arm around Steve’s shoulders like he knew Steve had been holding back tears.
Exhale.
Inhale.
Then off to San Diego to see Robin and Nancy. Robin had yelled and barreled out the door. Steve had done much the same thing after parking the RV, and the hug lasted long enough that Nancy had helped Eddie bring their things inside and were well on their way through the first of many iced teas. They’d stayed there the longest, even toyed with the idea of making home base somewhere near.
Exhale.
Inhale.
But Steve knew Eddie, knew he’d want to be near Wayne, at least while he could be. So they returned, set up camp in a town about the same size as Hawkins, about an hour away. Settled in. Hired someone to cut the grass. Bought groceries. On their third day there, kids had come around, intrigued by the new RV, drawn close by the sound of Eddie’s guitar. Kept close by Steve’s snacks.
Exhale.
Inhale.
They’d pseudo-adopted a few kids from that town. The kids had decent parents, who would come over from time to time and joke about Steve and Eddie stealing their kids. The nights would end in beer and laughter and more guitar, softer than the metal Steve had fallen in love with, but no less beautiful.
Exhale.
Inhale.
They grew up together. They grew old together. What goes around comes around, because a few short years ago Eddie had been in this very same hospital, right back in Hawkins. The familiarity of it all had given Steve double vision at times. He’d been there when Eddie passed. Felt him squeeze Steve’s hand for the last time.
Exhale.
Inhale.
Steve hadn’t cried until he’d gotten back to the RV. After all the condolences, the paperwork, the well-meaning bouquets and cards. The family they’d made, who were just as heartbroken as he was.
Exhale.
Inhale.
Steve had driven off, secluded himself for a few months, as he learned how to breathe without Eddie around. He didn’t make any more trips, but he did return to the town they’d made their own. He saw their youngest kids, their parents. More condolences. More faked smiles.
Exhale.
Inhale.
Now, he gives the ceiling a genuine smile. He’d kept Eddie waiting for too long. He takes his last breath and steps into the rest of forever, Eddie by his side.

Oh you're a shapeshifter you say? A shapeshifter with a morally grey vibe where most people see you as evil (perhaps including yourself) and yet you're probably good, deep down? You have a dark theme color palate and a friend/lover/partner who is much more light and sunshiny?
Tell me, when did you discover you were genderfluid?

Hi, how differently do you write nb!Alex and genderfluid!Lucy to make a noticable distinction between their gender identities? Like, how Do you write their gender euphoria/dysphoria in a way that they feel different from each other instead of being a copy of the same topics? And how Do you write Director Sanvers with both nb!Alex and genderfluid!Lucy in one fic where both feel different in terms of their gender identity instead of being a copy of each other?
I do try to write them somewhat differently. One thing that helps is that I headcanon them as experiencing gender in different ways, in part because of the labels that we've put on them (genderfluid vs nonbinary). Now, obviously those mean different things to different people and there's overlap. But I see Lucy/Leon as shifting across a plane of gender that includes very strong binary genders, and a large part of her experience is figuring out how to manage the fluidity and how to present both masc and fem. Alex's gender is stable and a lot of what they're trying to do is figure out how to be comfortable as themself when everything is so gendered in the world.
I also just try to write them differently irrespective of these gender headcanons. I think about their backgrounds and their canon behavior, and put together ideas about how they're different as characters. I do sometimes exaggerate those differences by making up or borrowing headcanons that contrast more (usually it's for Lucy, since she didn't get too much in canon). Now, once you factor in the gender headcanons, I do think my characterization of them becomes more similar (they have more shared experiences), but hopefully there's still some difference!
So basically I use a mix of personal headcanons as well as canon/fanon characterization as a basis for writing their different experiences. Take Static, where Leon cares much more about the perception of strangers compared to Alex, who cares more about friends/family. My thought process was kinda like this:
Ok, I want to write about how it can feel like the way a stranger genders you has more legitimacy than a friend/family because they don't have a relationship with you
That idea works well for Leon, who can be a binary gender and does like to present masc in my headcanon, so I will write him having the experience
Hmm, can I make this more interesting and add other perspectives? Yes, add nb!Alex feeling differently to compare and call attention to that experience too
Have Alex care less about strangers because they aren't super visibly gender nonconforming and have accepted that misgendering happens (also largely because their gender is nb and that's not well known/accepted)
Also can justify Alex caring more about family/friend's perception because a lot of canon/fanon is focused on Alex's personal relationships and we know they care about their family
As another example of how I differentiate them: my headcanon has Lucy being aware of her genderfluidity before Alex, so she's had more time to come to terms with it and process, which informs her character. Lucy has more direct baggage because of DADT though, so there's certainly still a lot of her learning to feel comfortable with herself. Alex is newer and doesn't have quite so many direct memories of being told "you can't be this way", so some of the things I write for them is more about exploring their gender and experiences in a less angsty way, I feel?
All that being said... I don't compare them directly too often? I feel like that might come across as forced distinction, and it's easier to have a oneshot focused on mostly one character's experience anyway. So in some ways, I can avoid them feeling too similar by just... only focusing on one of them. Also, some of the fics I've written with both of them aren't even focused on a specific facet of their gender identities, so again, I just dodge the problem for the most part.
tl;dr: I worry about this (and writing characters too similarly in general)! But I do try to distinguish them by (a) just deciding that they identify differently and (b) remembering that they are different characters who have different priorities and who react to things differently—they're more than their genders.

Genuinely another reason I am excited for Percy Jackson to be a show is bc I want it so badly to beat the shit out of Harry Potter. Fundamentally it is a more inclusive world than Harry Potter bc it was made for disabled kids and also makes disabled kids feel seen. Percy Jackson was written with love and it tells kids that you can make a difference. It empathises with antagonists that aren't nazis, but kids who've been fucked over by a system upheld by their parents, and then dismantles the system. It tells kids they can make a difference in the way the world works, not just that they can take down individual bad guys.
Also, just saying, Rick is actively making the cast diverse and while he has definitely fucked up in the past (looking at Piper so hard), at least he's growing and changing to be more inclusive and doesn't pussy foot around adding explicitly POC and queer and disabled characters.

If Lucy goes on T do you think Maggie and Alex would accept all of the changes that would come with it, or only certain aspects of it? Like for example they would be ok with their voice deepening but not with facial hair/musky body odour/bottom growth etc., or vice versa? And would one of them be more accepting of certain things than the other? And which changes would Lucy look most forward to?
I don’t think they have issues with Lucy’s changes on T, and they certainly accept all of them (especially because what does not accepting them even look like? Alex and Maggie won’t try to control Leon’s decisions—those are 100% his to make, especially when it comes to his body. They could break up or change the nature of their relationships if he goes on T, but I don’t headcanon that).
(An aside: sex is a related topic but any boundaries around that are about gender and sexuality, not physical changes on T.)
There are things that they found attractive in Lucy that change with T, like her voice. But for them, they find that the new change is also attractive (and some things that they don't expect to find attractive end up being so on Lucy/Leon bc it's her/him), or that even if a certain change isn’t particularly attractive, there are other changes that are. Leon being more comfortable/happy and them getting to be a part of that is what’s most important to them, and their love doesn’t go away. (Also, some changes revert or somewhat revert for a Leon that goes off of T eventually.) Their attraction is more about who Lucy/Leon is as a person.
I think with Maggie’s experience dating within the queer community and dating aliens, it's easier for her to adapt and feel confident that she'll stay attracted to Lucy. Alex is a little more worried about how she'll feel, but she reads about the experiences of other people in relationships with genderfluid people and talks about it with Lucy and Maggie. And kinda like I alluded to in the previous ask, she realizes that an amazing part of loving people is loving and supporting them while they change and grow into themselves, which makes this seem less scary. And they've all been uncertain about relationship things at some point—entering a polyamorous relationship and not knowing how they'd handle dating and their feelings was kinda scary! But they talked about things and were intentional with their actions and things ended up fine for them. And tbh as far as their specific feelings about specific changes on T, I don't really have many headcanons? It's mostly just the broad thoughts I outlined above, since I'm flexible with headcanons.
Voice is a big change Leon looks forward to. I know fat redistribution is often a big one, but it's actually height and build that bother Leon more, which doesn't change much for him on T. I don't think Leon necessarily stays on T long enough to develop a lot of facial or body hair, but he likes what he gets, and likes the ritual of shaving.

Just saw a video titled "Percy Jackson compilation because it's Pride Month" and I love the fact that everyone just sort of knows that if you read Percy Jackson as a kid you're queer. There is no escaping it.
