My dreams tonight can be split into two categories and I find that interesting.

The first half had me back in school, again. My time off was acknowledged and so this was me returning. I don't remember exactly what we were doing but I remember talking to a friend outside the classroom and seeing she had 2 pupils. It was strange but I didn't want to mention it. Though it's worth saying at one point I was "looking thru her eyes" and it did show her vision had a black stain covering almost half of it. It's also strange tho because this friend had pitch black eyes so idk how I was able to see the pupil or whatever.

At some point we left school and we were walking down a park and we saw this huge fucking dog sitting down that out to be an inflatable palace, so I jokingly told my friends I wanted to go sooo bad 🥺

Walking down the same street I ran into my little brother, he was with someone else and he was throwing a tantrum. I don't remember what he was crying about, but when I got close (and he explained me why) I told them both there was a really cool dog down the streets and that excited him enough to stop crying.

Then I woke up, because I was freezing, so I covered myself up and went back to sleep.

The second half had me at school, again. This time I was in a class, and while the first sequence had a friend from secondary school this time there mostly were ones from primary. We also had a teacher, though I'm sure she was my informatics one from secondary. She had given us a paper test of sorts (it was all very lax, she was just joking and giving us games) where there were two words and in the middle you had to write the... Combination? Or the middle ground between them?? In typical school fashion it wasn't clear at fucking all. I did get Somewhere until a word that was like giller or jiller showed up and I started sweating bullets bc i was like I never saw that word before but I was too shy to ask bc they'd joked about me not being able to finish this so I was acting prideful and shit.

My thinking was interrupted when a phone started ringing. At first I tried to ignore it but after not one but two people pointed it out I finally picked it up and like I always do I turned the speaker on and went "what do you want?"(<- I'm not usually this aggressive but I was being interrupted in class). The number was unknown btw but my smartphone didn't call it a scam.

On the other side my mother started screaming which caused me to flinch and turn the speaker off as the classmates before surrounding me stepped away. "I'm in class, what do you want?" I turned away slightly again to avoid the screams so I don't know it she actually had a motive to be like this. It wasn't long til I got pissed and just ended the call

I believe at this point I tried to stand up making a joke like "now you see why I don't like my mother" but when I did so I realized my legs, which were covered by a pair of jeans I don't know nor look like the one I used to own and lost (for these ones had a sort of patched look on one of the legs, like fabric was attached from below in a big square over my thigh), was covered in red stains, so my first thought was oh my god I got my period and nobody told me I was stained! I remember putting my legs together and the "camera" focusing on the fact I was wearing red leather strap boots. (Think of the Sims 4 pirate boots)

Odd thing is, however, my "period theory" just made no sense. Because the blood was nowhere near my inner thigh, more around the lower and bottom sides, and they weren't even restricted to the inner side but rather the middle and exterior sides too. And the red was more like... Not even wine stain red; it looked like a food stain (wine, juice) but it had a really light red color.

No one was moved by this or anything and afraid of being left ignored I acted like this was nothing too and walked over to where my closest primary school friend and my bully were sitting, chatting and cooking. Worth mentioning despite being my bully she was kinda chill sometimes and specially now.

They were discussing how to make pea patty, my friend saying you just had to mash em while my bully insisted it needed more ingredients like butter. I tried to insert myself in the convo but it went unnoticed. Also my plate of... Eggs? Eggs and bread?? Got stepped on slightly, I didn't say anything.

Nothing much of relevancy happened again after this though it's worth pointing out that my friend was getting peas from what looked like a zucchini where when peeling down the skin it was revealed it was full of little PEELED peas all together forming the shape of the zucchini. Mental.

Man, to return to Tumblr after (a hundred?) years of not being active in an attempt to find relief from the hellish experience I've had on other sites, a "social media retirement" of sorts... to witness The Great Exodus from Twitter and Reddit happen. Man... I've created this account back then to mainly surf for Sims 2 content here lol. Who knew.

I hope people will find their peace somehow, but first and foremost I hope that the initial growth won't cause Tumblr to turn into a Twitter 2.0. I don't know anything about how social media works, but it feels like you can't ever expect things to remain calm and okay when the auditorium grows out of the foreseeable proportion. Idk I'm old, I dislike changes, I dislike people. I also dislike monopolists and that's that on that.

growing up i played rugby and hockey for the school teams, i also casually played netball and football. at my high school we had to pick sports in year 10 and i chose the most active ones bc i was sick and tired of being thrown into the less active sports bc i wasn't as fast or as coordinated and it was awesome

currently, i've always been big into cycling which is hilarious for someone with dyspraxia

it's so stupid but i'd love to write AND do science research. acting would also be cool but that's so much commitment with little return and i'm not conventionally attractive so there's literally no point and i'd rather have a stable career

Mario Legacy Challenge: 1987 (Part 2)

Jumpman has already gone to multiple different locations with the circus this year. Things haven't gone wrong since Donkey Kong's escape at the end of 1985. But this particular destination, located in a jungle, may prove to be different.

Donkey Kong Junior has been looking for his father ever since the latter went missing nearly four years ago. Now he has finally found a clue: a circus with a giant picture of his father to advertise its upcoming show. Finally, after all this time, he is close to reuniting with his father.

The circus used in the following screenshots is by seeker_ban_ra on the gallery (idk if the username is still accurate as the source I'm using is a screenshot from June).

The young gorilla makes his way to the circus. There is no show going on at the moment, so not that many people around. Now his goal is to find his father as soon as possible.

The owner of he circus, Harrison Gibbs, is painting some kind of advertisement for the circus. Next to him, we see postcards from various locations the circus has visited.

Jumpman is in charge of guarding Donkey Kong to make sure he doesn't escape. He feels very dedicated to work right now. There's no way something could possibly go wrong tonight, right?

Donkey Kong Junior has found the one keeping his father captive. Now he needs to figure out how to free his father.

Jumpman goes to Harrison and asks what the plan is. They come up with the following plan: Jumpman takes Donkey Kong to the jungle, making sure to keep him captive the entire time. The rest of the circus tries to keep the smaller gorilla from finding them.

Jumpman does as he is told, but after some time, the younger gorilla discovers them. Now begins the plot of Donkey Kong Jr.

Jumpman may try to escape with the gorilla, but no matter how much he tries, Junior keeps catching up to him. And with all that time spent guarding the gorilla, he is starting to get hungry. Clearly this plan isn't working.

Jumpman returns to the circus (still making sure to keep DK captive) and tells Harrison exactly what has happened. He also predicts that the small gorilla will be here soon.

Harrison and Jumpman discuss what to do. For Harrison, the worst part of all this is that they will have to cancel today's show. This, of course, also means losing out on money.

The two have come up with a new plan. Jumpman will take DK to a hideout, a building located across the water. Jumpman can go there with a helicopter, and with water in the way, there's no way Junior can actually catch them, right? Meanwhile, Harrison attempts to distract the small gorilla.

Jumpman is worried. What if this plan goes horribly wrong? After all, things are already going wrong.

And, of course, Donkey Kong Jr. has already caught up to them. Time to escape.

Harrison attempts to keep DK Jr. from figuring out where Jumpman is heading, but he's not able to stop the gorilla for long.

DK Jr. might be smaller than his father, but the sizes of these dogs shown in The Sims 4 are way smaller than the true sizes.

Harrison has been injured in his attempt at stopping DK Jr. At least this time, he has been much more helpful than when Donkey Kong escaped from the circus two years earlier.

Now he has to follow Donkey Kong Junior. The smaller gorilla can't go to the hideout!

Jumpman has made it to the building. Surely there's no way the smaller gorilla can get here, right? And even if he does, he'll have a hard time freeing his father. (I know there's no cage in these screenshots, but really, you can just assume that everything actually looks more like in the Donkey Kong Jr. game.)

Bad news for Jumpman: Junior has managed to follow him to the hideout. He even made it past the river.

The only thing Jumpman can still do is fight. Maybe throwing obstacles will drive the smaller gorilla away. But it doesn't work. Junior is very determined to free his father.

Meanwhile, in Brooklyn...

Mario, Luigi and Pauline are back home from school. Mario and Luigi seem to be especially impressed by how good the local school is. They seem to be having a great day.

They have no idea that somewhere else, things are going horribly wrong.

Mario decides to try playing basketball... he may be too young to enter the actual court though, since he's only near it.

Pauline is having a casual conversation with her neighbor Emmalyn. Pauline used to have a grudge against her, but now the two actually get along.

Harrison follows Junior as quickly as he can, attempting to warn Jumpman, or help him, or something... but it's too late!

When Donkey Kong Junior freed his father, he also broke the building in the process, causing Jumpman to fall all the way from the tallest point of the building.

Harrison is in shock. He can't believe what just happened. He is starting to regret everything. He should have never insisted on capturing a gorilla for the circus. He should have never insisted on keeping the gorilla captured! Now one of his employees is dead.

The Kongs escape, eventually making their way back to Kong Island. It was never their intention to kill, just to get out of there.

On his way back home, Donkey Kong also ends up sabotaging the greenhouse of some guy named Stanley, but this isn't really relevant to the Marios' story.

With what just happened, there is no way Harrison can continue running the circus. He keeps thinking about how horrible of a mistake this all was.

Harrison makes his way to Brooklyn and tells Jumpman's family the sad news.

And with this, generation 1 of the Mario Legacy Challenge is over. Taking over is the heir Mario Mario Junior, who is the Mario from the Mario series, so Gen 2 will most likely feature more familiar characters than any other generation.

i’m pretty sure @cassimopeia tagged me a million years ago, and i have no idea who’s done it already, so i’ll tag ... @simming-in-the-rain and @funkyllama​ and literally anyone else who sees this and wants to join :^) more of you should be history simmers, so like ... get on it ! 

 1. what has been your favorite time period to play in or which one are you most excited for?

oof ! i loved the 1890s-1910s because i got to live out my gilded age dreams with the og generation of my legacy family—as i say every day, i can’t wait to catch back up to them, whenever i finally do more casual gameplay. the bancrofts are technically stuck in the 1840s and 2010s. looking forward to getting through the civil war era ! as far as the story is concerned, i’m fantasizing about the fifties and sixties but also someday reaching present day ... 

2. do you have a favorite piece of historical cc?

hm. this is too hard. can i just list my favorite creators instead ?? everything by happylifesims gilded-ghosts, and linzlu make me immeasurably happy. 

3. who is your favorite sim currently?

beatriz. she’s spicy, a lil unhinged, a big meanie. goddess. 

4. what is your favorite world?

windenburg or sulani? i used to hate oasis springs but then i decided to set my story in a desert-y place for some godforsaken reason, so it’s growing on me. brindleton bay or whatever it’s called is, for me personally, also v/ underrated.   5. are you more gameplay or story focused?

story, tragically ! i miss gameplay, but i also feel like i won’t be able to avoid using poses and stuff even when i decide to return to my legacy gameplay. EXHIBIT A.  6. do you like to play with pets in your historical saves?

there are a few in my legacy gameplay; the ... second set of founders who are actually the real founders had a dog whose name i forgot, and talullah has a cat called sugarplum. jered and his family have a dog, who’s actually francesca’s, and his name is damien. i always forget about the pets, which means my sims forget about them, and so i don’t involve many. love to make them chase after strays tho ...  7. what's your biggest immersion breaking pet peeve with the game?

echoing tara that cell phones SUCK. honestly, tho, it’s probably when ugly townies i forgot to delete wander into the frame. makes me livid, u kno.  8. what's your favorite in-game historical item?

idk what this question means bc it’s 5:30pm on a wednesday BUT i like the clothesline and the wash basin from laundry day or whatever it’s called.  9. what would you like to see as a new pack or asset to the game?

uhhhhhhh ... more non-western build items ? it’s limiting when it comes to worldbuilding !   10. what pack do you think is invaluable as a historical simmer?

tbh, i feel like there’s not one that i would miss for history-related reasons. the laundry day stuff is helpful, like i mentioned, but idk ...  11. do you have a favorite mod to enhance historical gameplay?

this is random and more a general gameplay thing, but the one that lets you make groups bigger without earning points or whatever is ... so good. i put all of my family members in a group, and then i can make them have family get togethers all the time ! i honestly haven’t done gameplay in so long, i’ve forgotten how to answer this question.  12. what's your ideal family size for playing?

five or six, i guess? enough that i can despise one of them, periodically ignore them, and alternate between who’s my favorite of the week. i get bored if i don’t have enough family members to mess with, which i think is why i like to keep track of the extended family.  13. do you use poses?

with the story, absolutely ! with my legacy stuff ... originally, no, because i was doing purely gameplay stuff and only sharing screenshots with my irl friend. more recently, i’ve done some staged posts with jered, so i guess somewhat? when i actually play with my legacy saves, no poses. but, like i said, that might change going forward bc i’m obsessed with them. i have a whole storyline to play through anyway, so like ... insert kissy face emoji.

14. do you use any overrides in your game?

probably ?? my mods folder is a mystery to me, i s2g

15. do you, or did you, play off-the-grid during your game?

never tried it ! maybe sometime. 

16. what lifespan do you play on?

long. i get attached ! occasionally i switch to normal. aging is off for story things since i move things along manually according to the pace of the story. the death of my legacy sims is always a whole entire affair, so i like to prologue it. for example, jered’s father was my main sim for literal years, so i had a few real human tears when he died dhsjkflgs

17. what inspired you to start playing historically?

Idk I've been feeling sentimental in general... so, if you would hear me out. I know I'm usually a Tumblr Funnyman™ but so much has happened in the past year. Maybe it's being cooped up that has made me think about it more because I've not had much else to do.

This past year alone feels like so much has just... happened. And I'm not just talking about the global pandemic in the room. I lost my job in February. I had it for a year and work was slowing down anyway so even though I cried like I always do when I leave a job (if you know me you know I'm a crybaby), I knew it would work out. But I've always needed something, anything to get me motived to at least get out of bed. Some sort of routine.

That's what Sims 2 became for me in 2020. Whether it'd be playing, writing, chatting with friends about, or helping people learn and teaching them the best I can. And I feel like it was returned to me ten fold. One of the best ways I know to make people happy is to make them laugh. So to hear all y'all's feedback on my meme videos or tutorials, hear how it makes you die laughing or that even some people want to reinstall sims 2 because of me? Words can not describe how happy that makes me. That the joy of what I see as just a silly special interest I've had since I was 8 or 9 could affect people around the world.

Though I cringe at the super emo face 1 sims Facebook will sometimes show me in my memories, thinking why on earth did I ever think that was aesthetically pleasing, I can also look back and think "this game has been with me this whole time." Apart of my routine. Whether it was playing after school or filming some stuff on weekends or becoming almost the only thing holding me together as I discover new things to intrigue me that I never knew, friends I've made through all the years that I still think about, and people I somehow inspire.

I feel like I'm rambling and I kind of am... Most times I would only do this to close friends because like I said, I prefer to make people smile and laugh rather than feel bad or sad for me. But maybe some people do actually care about me... for more than just a jester in a Tumblr court. And that's nice to feel ❤️

I figured I’d mention too that I finally got a job after a year old being unemployed so posts may slow but I’m still going to work just as hard! Here’s to another rotation around the sun! 🥂

crack au where Jonah Magnus is a good guy but everything keeps going wrong and he spends all of his time running around trying to stop his employees from diving headfirst into their Fuck Up™ of the week

in this au Jonah is almost entirely incompetent but he's got the exasperated parent thing down enough to make up for his lack of braincells

he's also at least 7% dumber than he is in canon

s1 Jon: please call pest control there are so many worms

Elias: the pest control guys. the worms ate them

Elias spends the entirety of season 2 desperately trying to convince Jon that none of them killed Gertrude (in this au Gertrude just had a stroke or something in the tunnels). Elias stops Jon from destroying the table but a week later something heavy falls on it and the NotThem escapes anyway. Elias bashes in Leitner's head with a pipe after mistaking him for the monster and Jon gets framed.

now Elias has to convince this hunter that Jon is innocent while Jon runs around and harasses various fear avatars (who are all very amused with Elias' wayward Archivist). Elias RACES to Mike's house but he. he fucking misses them. the Beholding helpfully tells him that they're all going back to the Institute so Basira and Daisy can interrogate him, which isn't ideal, he'd really like to not go to jail, so he drafts up an employment contract on the way back and barely manages to escape the whole thing with his life intact.

then he explains everything to Jon because if Jon is going to end up being the Archivist, being uninformed won't do. Jon becomes the Archivist completely on accident and Elias is desperately trying to make all of this work because, haha, the Unknowing is coming up, and Elias is not in the fucking mood to deal with clowns.

since he's still a coward Elias sends Michael to go fetch Jon, only finding out after the fact that he very nearly almost signed Jon's death warrant. Elias is now speedrunning Jon's development because fuck the Unknowing is coming up really quickly and Tim is a self destructive mess and Melanie keeps trying to stab Elias and Martin is a pining idiot and goddammit he didn't sign up for this

Elias prepares Jon the best he can for the Unknowing, because even though he knows the ritual will fail, the Circus can still cause a considerable amount of damage and he needs them out of the way.

the Unknowing happens. Jon ends up in a wack ass coma, Tim is dead, Daisy's in the coffin, and Basira is starting to look like the better choice of Archivist because jesus christ Jon has no self preservation instinct. Elias doesn't get arrested this time around but his ex husband starts coming by the Institute and fucking with all his employees. and the Flesh is attacking. jesus. goddamn.

Elias is having a nice dream about Peter trying to fish Simon Fairchild out of a sky filled with eyes when he abruptly sits up in bed, wide awake.

it takes three days for Elias to find Martin.

"Please tell me why the fuck you're dabbling in the Lonely," Elias says as Martin steps sheepishly out of the fog.

"Ah. Well. Jon can't See into it very well and sometimes we like to spice up our se-"

"Stop before I have to gouge my eyes out again."

"A-Again-?"

Elias drags Martin back to the Institute. Martin starts setting tapes on the coffin because "Jon loves these" and Elias starts bashing his head into the wall.

Jon climbs out of the coffin with Daisy and Elias almost considers locking Jon in his office so the damn archivist can't do anything else ridiculous. instead, Elias very calmly takes Jon by the shoulders, and shakes him like a rag doll.

"Stop fucking with entities, you stupid, stupid man," Elias says, shaking Jon more viciously now.

after several hours of breathing exercises Elias returns to his house and doesn't take his Sight off of Jon for the rest of the night, which is a fun experience for Peter when he wakes up and finds Elias' bloodshot eyes staring directly at him in the morning.

Elias' only goal now is to keep Jon and his assistants from pulling any more wild stunts without his supervision. his renewed involvement with the archival staff results in a few things he'd hoped to avoid: drink invites, physical contact (Martin is surprisingly quick to start hugging Elias once he realizes Elias won't stop him), and- shudder -feelings. because Elias genuinely cares about his staff and doesn't want any harm to befall them. especially Jon. Jon is his Archivist, the only one to ever succeed like this, and Elias will be damned if he lets anything happen to him.

"Why do you care?" Jon asks, once, compulsion thrumming like static on his tongue. "About us, I mean. I would've assumed you'd want to perform the Beholding's ritual."

Jonah Magnus attempted the Watcher's Crown once, when he was young and new. he'd brought his patron close, but not all the way through, and the backlash of power killed all the inmates at Millbank and severely crippled Jonah's connection to the Eye for months afterward. he grew to assume that the Beholding simply preferred the world as it was--ripe with fear for watching. it didn't need a ritual.

he instead dedicated himself to growing stronger, cultivating his Institute of knowledge, his stronghold. if he tore out a few people's eyes when he got too old, then, well, collateral. but he doesn't want the world to end, and knows now that no ritual will ever succeed unless it brings in all the Powers at once. and he doesn't want that either.

it's concerning to him that Jon seems to be collecting marks regardless. the only ones he's missing are the Dark and the Lonely, and Elias is determined to keep it that way.

he explains all of this to Jon who, to his credit, takes it pretty well. Jon is fascinated with historic life and Elias spends some time simply recounting tales of his youth, when he still bore the name Magnus.

they bond. it's good.

and one day Basira does a little too much research and discovers the dark sun waiting in Ny Alesund. she insists they need to go and see what's left of the People's Church, they need to ensure everything is taken care of. Jon is rather insistent too. and Elias wouldn't have been inclined to let them go, except Peter was finally home after weeks at sea, and it wasn't like Jon was defenseless, he could call Elias if anything went wrong...

so, very reluctantly, Elias gives them the all clear. Basira, Jon, and Martin head north, and Elias almost forgets they've gone when he arrives home and Peter already has dinner prepared.

Jon comes back marked by the Dark.

Elias curses himself, over and over, for being foolish enough to let them go, for not keeping a closer eye on them. he knows the ritual won't work unless a certain incantation is spoken, so he'll just have to keep world-ending written chants away from Jon. easy. and it's not like Jon will even get marked by the Lonely. Peter wouldn't.

(but Martin doesn't have the same level of control, and sometimes...)

it's an accident. Martin and Jon are testing it, pushing the boundaries, when Martin pulls them both into the Lonely. Elias threatens divorce until Peter caves and fetches them, but it's too late. Jon has been marked by all fourteen Powers.

Elias tells him, and warns him to check everything he reads.

Elias gets a sinking feeling in his stomach, and beside him, Peter looks alarmed. meanwhile, in his flat with Martin making tea in the other room, Jon has a statement clutched in his grasp.

I would apologize for the deception, but I'm afraid that's quite what I'm good at. I'm not one to monologue, that's more Jonah's shtick, so shall we get on with things?

I admit I underestimated Jonah Magnus. He's still remarkably easy to manipulate, but when he abandoned the Watcher's Crown ritual I knew I would have to take a different approach. The Mother is not so satisfied with the world as she may have insinuated. It is our turn to rise, Jon.

At the age of eight, you were marked by us. We sent you to the Magnus Institute in the hopes that a new Archivist would rekindle Jonah's desire to end the world. Unfortunately, it seemed as though he grew fond of you, and so we brought in a new plan. We marked you. One fear at a time. Jonah gave an admirable attempt at protecting you, but ultimately, he is an incompetent old fool, and I am a Weaver. Even Jonah Magnus dances to invisible strings.

Everyone underestimates a spider until it bites. Poison is poison, Jon, regardless of the medium in which it is served.

You will be safe in this new world. Martin, too. Perhaps even Jonah and his Lukas, if the Mother deems them worthy.

Now, please repeat after me...

Jon reads the ink scratched words, eyes welling up with tears and hands trembling, as thunder crashes outside and a howling gale picks up beyond the windows. Martin is shouting something, there's the crawling press of Elias' gaze as it rests heavy behind Jon, a silent observer. He can feel Elias' soothing presence, cool and calm in the raging storm.

Elias is still watching out for him.

Strings are wrapped around his wrists, jerking his arms up in a poor mockery of religious regard, strange hysterical laughter clawing out from his throat.

Jon's tears run red. Somewhere, Elias is still watching.

Hey lazyduchess! This is more of an appreciation post than it is a request. Thanks for providing us with these awesome mods and taking those requests from previous asks. I think it's amazing that modders like you are still contributing to a 16-year-old game. Btw, I'm just wondering where you first started or learned to code and what inspired/motivated you to modding The Sims games. Thanks again for all you do for the TS2 community!!

Will be a bit of a longish post so, all of it under the cut!

Some coding/scripting background:

Since I was very young I’ve wanted to make videogames. When I was just a kid and didn’t know what I was doing I used to google “programs to make videogames” and stuff like that all the time. 

Came across drag and drop programs like 3D Rad, GameMaker, etc. And made extremely rough stuff with them. This was around, Idk, maybe 2009. I ended up sticking to GM, from browsing around the forums after a couple years or so I realized that scripting was the way to go, and luckily it had a super friendly and relatively powerful scripting engine, which really eased me into learning to code in the future, so I’m super thankful to GameMaker for that.

For years I was making things in GameMaker and exclusively used the scripting engine rather than the drag and drop, maybe until like 2015 or something, when I finally very hesitantly moved into Unity 3D because I kept reading everywhere about how much more powerful it was, which meant that I had to learn how to code in C#, an actual programming language. I’ve eventually branched out into some Javascript, Java, Python, C++, etc. But IMO C# has the best, friendliest syntax out of them all!

Sims modding and Sims2RPC background:

I used to play Sims 2 BG as a kid, but I was too young to really understand what I was doing, so I grew up with Sims 3. When UC came out for free I grabbed it and realized how much better it was (in my opinion of course) so I started playing it a lot. Learned about firstborn, corruption, etc. 

At this time I was also following the FreeSO project, which shares a lot of similarities with The Sims 2 when it comes to modding. 

Since FreeSO has its own modding and scripting environment that works in real time and I was into programming I played with it quite a lot, learned how it all worked.

Then around 2018 or 2019 I wanted to practice C++, just to learn another programming language. I knew like... next to nothing about it, but I thought that it would be cool to make a Rich Presence feature for Sims 2 for the project. So, with a lot of googling around, I did that, and added borderless to it out of convenience as well and kept it private for a long while. 

During this whole time I was using it to play Sims 2 every time, I just didn’t think it was enough to warrant a public release.

Until, one day, playing around with memory reading in Cheat Engine, as I had done to find the addresses for the money count, currently played Sim, etc. for the Rich Presence, I found the random seeds for randomization and came up with a Lua script to hook into the functions and randomize their return value. In practice, this script fixed firstborn syndrome! I was super excited and as Sims2RPC was already there as an entry point to Sims 2 I decided to add the fix using it, realized that I could release the launcher with these features and yeah, the rest is history. 

I realized I could have a platform in Tumblr and with the knowledge I already had from modding FreeSO I could turn Sims 2 into what I wanted it to be, and take requests from fellow Simmers!

hey!! first of all, you’re so sweet 🥺 i really appreciate knowing that you would stick around for something after asa, but i’m pretty sure of my decision :/ i’m always watching tv shows and wishing they had just ended it after season whatever, and they could have given it the real ending it deserved. i would be a total hypocrite if i kept stretching my story out more and more just because i love the characters. i feel like it deserves a meaningful ending! so yeah, i’m 100% sure that there won’t be another gen after asa. (i also literally can’t bear the thought of caroline/beth/danny getting old or dying, i just don’t ever want to see it lmao)

but i don’t know if i’ll be 100% done with simblr by that time! if i have an idea for a new story, i might do that, but right now i have no plans at all. and to be completely honest, i miss when writing was just a hobby and not a commitment for me. all of you are so lovely and i know you would let me take a break if i needed it, but there’s a lot of pressure on me to keep writing every single day, which is both a blessing and a curse lmao. it’s great motivation, but whenever i miss a self-imposed deadline (like right now, because it’s finals week) i feel like shit, like i let everyone down. i miss being able to just go where inspiration takes me. and i miss enjoying other hobbies guilt-free; i’m always having to make a choice between playing a new video game, watching a new show, learning how to do something new, etc. vs. working on sims posts. because this story takes up SO much of my time. after i finish my responsibilities for the day, i only have a few hours to myself, and if i don’t work on a new post, then it’ll get pushed back another day or two and again, that makes me feel like shit :(

So, one night I’m going through youtube and I come upon this one shitposty video about some random anime that I’ve never even heard of. After doing some research, I discover that it’s actually based on a dating sim that I’ve also never heard of. As a joke I was like “Hey Sugar wanna watch this as a joke, it might be funny” and so we did. And uhm. Well.

Today we’re gonna be reviewing Brothers Conflict, aka Sweet Home Alabama 2: Electric Anime Boogaloo aka the anime that ruined our lives. [Again, disclaimer: neither Sugar nor I condone incest and/or pedophilia, two themes which are uh, very rampant in this anime which is why I cannot recommend it in good faith. It’s not good, don’t get me wrong. I can’t really say that I liked it even if watching it and ragging on it was kind of enjoyable, and I did get attached to some of the characters because that’s the kind of idiot I am. Also, we’re not shirking our duties to write I swear please don’t kill me--] Anyway, an obligatory SPOILER WARNING though this probably isn’t going in the main tag bc I do not want the fans to publicly stone me. Why are we reviewing this? Bc we need to talk about it somewhere. Though I say review lightly bc this... is really more of a critique.

ALSO we only watched the anime, idk if things are different in the game. There is no full english translation for the games and most of the LP channels have been copyright striked, so please don’t come at us for not knowing anything. I also know that otome games and dating sims don’t tend to translate well to anime, and I will be addressing this later.

So, dear god, where do I begin.

Where do we begin indeed? How about the fact that her name is Ema and I had to google to remember the heroine’s name? Also, she is seventeen.

Our plot, or well... what you COULD call a plot, I guess, if you REALLY wanted to give this anime that much credit, focuses on the aforementioned seventeen year old Hinata Ema, who has an absent father who apparently FOUND THE TIME TO FALL IN LOVE AND GET MARRIED BUT NEVER HAS A SECOND TO SPARE FOR HIS ONLY CHILD, RINTARO I SWEAR TO GOD I AM TAKING CUSTODY OF YOUR CHILD. HAND HER OVER-- Anyway. He’s getting married to a woman who has 13 sons (jesus christ ma’am have you ever heard of a condom?) and he decides to move her in with them because... I guess he has less braincells than I have balls, which is to say, zero. Hi, I’m trans.

So, Ema moves in with them... along with her talking grey squirrel, Juli. Juli is... interesting and by interesting, I mean-- ABSOLUTELY PUZZLING. He, apparently, has seen the majority of Ema’s life from babyhood to teenagerhood and can talk but is only understood by Ema (who he calls Chii) and Louis, the eighth son in the Asahina family. It is never explained why, or how Chii came across him or how in an episode, a single episode, he becomes human because why the hell not, I guess??? (Also, he is pretty. YES. I said it. Fight me.) [Quick Spice intervention, this squirrel can talk to people, transform into a human, enter dreams, and live way longer than a squirrel should since the average lifespan of a squirrel is like 6 years in the wild. Juli is apparently a god as none of this is EVER explained.]

And when she meets the Asahina family, it’s pretty much immediately chaos because these heterosexual (I guess? They look like a bunch of twinks to me but there goes anime trying to convince me that straight people are real and not a lie made up by Trump) men have NEVER and I mean NEVER known a woman in their entire lives, since they seem to want to bang their stepsister immediately. And most of them are GROWN ASS ADULTS. Only three of them are actually minors (though Iori is 18 and only one year older so I guess??? It’s okay??? But still weird) and one of them is a 13 year old who looks and acts like he’s 8.

Oh, and did I mention that out of these boys, only the adult triplets and the abusive asshole 16 year old get any kind of characterization AND character development? I mean, Subaru gets an “arc” if you can call it that, but really, they don’t give him much... personality. You could replace him with a cardboard cutout and it’d be the same. I feel bad for him (but not really because dude you are 20 and she is your sister, what the fuck--)

But if there’s anything good about this anime, it is the characters themselves. Several of the boys have redeeming qualities and interesting personalities and quirks, as well as interesting relationships and dynamics with each other. Yes, some of them are lacking in the plotline department while others may have decent plotlines and lack personality, and then some of them are just given absolutely nothing (COUGH Masaomi COUGH Ukyo COUGHCOUGHCOUGH Iori, and by the way, what the fuck is that game plotline bc I read the wiki since I wanted to know more about him. We don’t have time to unpack the mento illness luv. But you’re telling me they had all this meat to work with and they threw it in the trash and gave him nothing? What the hell?) And if anything, I feel as if the characters themselves are crippled by the plotline. If given a different story, perhaps, they may have room to shine, because a lot of them are compelling if not lovable (though some may not be... lovable. COUGHFuuto, at least not for me.) Iori... Iori has a hell of a plot in the game, according to the Wiki but I can’t blame the writers for not exploring all of it because whoa. It is dark and not in a good way. But back to the subject at hand... I agree with Spice. I do/did like quite a lot of the characters... provided the entire romantic plot is taken away but we will go into more of why the plot is problematic below. All I can really add is: There is a baby in this dumpster and canon has been taken out back to be shot like a lame horse.

This brings me to a point in which I would like to pause the character discussion and bring up a glaring flaw with this anime in general (aside from the... plot. Look, I’m not a huge fan of weird stepsibling stuff but I think that if you want to do something like that, there are ways to do it and ways not to do it. This was the way not to do it, which I’m getting to). The biggest thing that made this anime so uncomfortable was the imbalance of power dynamics. Why is the protagonist 17 when most of the love interests are 18 and older, and I mean much, much older? And she’s not any 17 year old... she’s a lonely, neglected girl who is starved for the love of a family. This makes her easily manipulated by the brothers, who clearly desire her for less than wholesome reasons, and that makes it skeevy. I’m not sure why there’s such a fetishization of nonconsent in media, as if it’s fine for as many men to lust after female protagonists as the writer desires BUT the woman can’t want a single one of them in return. It’s creepy, and quite frankly, I am very much over it. I also get that the age thing is probably a product of the protagonist of a teenager oriented dating sim not translating well to an anime (because really, all otome game MCs are meant to be a neat little pair of shoes for the player to imagine themselves in), but why are we fetishizing a teenager being groomed by adults anyway? Especially adults who have this much power over her to begin with? The power dynamics bring this plot from “Oh, this might be kinda trashy but it could be entertaining” to “This is extremely creepy and rapey and kind of a dumpster fire.”

This is also true. If we were to take age into consideration, Fuuto, Yusuke, and Iori would be the three candidates left for Chii. This is taking out the youngest as well, who is... thirteen, I think? But anyway, (I know I am probably going to get some hate for this but go for it), I am into stories that explore the stepsibling thing and it can make a good narrative-- but before everyone gets uppity: There is a line between FICTION and REALITY and I do not condone real life incest but a story is a story and there are ways to frame it that make it clear that it is not a romantic thing, or acceptable. This anime does not do that in it’s dynamics because some of the brothers do start off in that very firm caregiving, family role and it is a sharp turn into romance that makes you go, “?” or in Fuuto case, a blending that does lean into fetishization.

All in all I think the plot maybe could have been okay? I’m not saying it isn’t problematic, because we all know it is, who are we kidding? But I don’t think it’s wrong per se to explore family dynamics with romance and to understand where the line should be drawn, and maybe exploring the definition of family itself. I have seen fanfictions with similar tropes ask those questions and explore the concept beautifully without romanticizing or fetishizing incest and unhealthy power dynamics. It could have been good, and I get that perhaps I’m barking up the wrong tree by expecting mature themes in an anime based on an otome game, but it also could have been a lot less... creepy (I have used that word so much that it looks wrong now) even if it wasn’t the greatest thing ever. But again, what was I expecting? I watched this whole thing as a joke and ended up attached to the characters like a fool... That tends to be a trend here, and this is why we are so salty all the time. So anyway, stay tuned for our review of the characters! We may not cover all of them since some of them don’t really get anything, but we’ll cover what we found interesting.
