Fish of the March of Maedhros

Flora, fauna, geography and environment masterlist

Two prominent rivers run in the March of Maedhros. Southeast of the Hill of Himring in the foothills of the March is the river Celon, a tributary to the river Aros which itself is a tributary to Sirion. Upon the hill of Himring is a spring from which flows little Gelion, the stream that meets Gelion to form one of the seven rivers of Ossiriand. 

A variety of freshwater fish can be found in these rivers. I also headcanon there is at least one lake where fish are found and sometimes caught.

Note: due to differences in proximity to the sea, temperature, and unknown factors, such as speed of water, even more than my other animal posts. A lot of these are going to be approximations on real species and their morphology and behavior rather than exact replicas so just keep that in mind. I also headcanon that the March is a strange place.

As I will, as always, I will include some world building notes at the bottom!

Found in the upper reaches of Celon: (a species similar to) giant Siberian trout, freshwater cod, freshwater lamprey (river and brook), white eyed bream, common barbel

Found in little Gelion: rainbow trout, common bream (in slower stretches), common bleak, riffle minnow (slow stretches), common minnow

Both: freshwater eels, Cottus koshewnikowi, asp, freshwater sculpin, alpine bullhead, silver carp

Found in lakes: Arctic char, dwarf sculpin, Abyssocottus elochini, red sculpin, Omul, Coregonus maraena, ide, other minnow species

The lakes, ponds and deeper rivers of the March also contain stranger creatures including iridescent eels, creatures between fish and something else, shadowed giants never seen in their full size and more

World building notes:

-Fish are eaten in the March, both fresh and salted. Indeed dried or salted fish is rare in other elven realms (however both dwarven and human cultures have it more frequently). Roe is also eaten

-Fresh fish are usually served at Himring and in the smaller outposts throughout the March. Scouts often take dried fish in their satchels but rarely catch them as they are highly trained to be inconspicuous and avoid fires to cook

-Fishing in the March is done throughout the year however it can be extremely dangerous during the winter. There are those among Maedhros’s host who particularly enjoy the risk and return yearly to the icy waters.

-Fish are primarily seasoned with salt and with local herbs such as garlic chives, lovage,Rarer dishes might involves dried bay leaves from Nevrast or thyme, primarily from Ossiriand and Dorthonion, pepper from the Ered Luin, and imported wines, also from Ossiriand, Nevrast, and Thargelion

-Trout appear in Avarin lore as guides and are not eaten by them.

-Some of the strange creatures including fish that are native to the March later appear in sigils, heraldry, and art created by the host of Maedhros

Everything's Interconnected AU Timeline Part 1: Kingdomcraft / Empires

Pre-Kingdomcraft

This is exactly what it sounds like. The story of Everything's Interconnected AU begins a few years before the events of Kingdomcraft, while there is some god stuff which happened even further in the past it is not directly covered. Before the events of Kingdomcraft, the main event that happens is the murder of the princess of the Ocean, the subsequent disappearance of the Ocean Kingdom and the coronation of the 11 remaining princes and princesses.

Kingdomcraft

Follows the story Kingdom craft with a few differences, these differences come mainly in the form of the ending. In Everything's Interconnected AU the league of Villains is dismantled and all the rulers rally together to put an end to the Queen of the Alpine's leadership, this is unfortunately after the town had been blown up.

Terrain Changes / the time between

A couple thousand years go by, cultures changing and moving. In this time the Kingdoms fall and the empires of Empires S1 form.

Empires S1

The emperors come into power and the story of Empires S1 happen. Everything is the same up to the Rapture. All of the emperors die some way or another, how these deaths come about will be covered in their individual character backstories. What happens to them after their deaths will be covered further in the points of connection post (coming soon).

New Combination Empire

The people from the original empires travel across the world to find a habitable area after the Rapture. They end up traveling to the area which will become Empires S2 and creating an expansive capital and other infrastructure.

New Empire Falls

Some amount of time later this Empire falls. This process is a slow leave and disintegration rather than a quick event. The ruins of this Empire becomes the 'Ancient Capital' of Empires S2.

Empires S2

The events of Empires S2 are practically the same as the what happens in the series with the addition of headcanons. Pix from Empires S1 is the archaeologist working on the Ancient Capital. Pearl of Gilded Helithia is now Saint Pearl, is patron saint of the harvest, war and conquest. The kingdom the people from sanctuary come from formed in the ruins of Mythland / Gilded Helinthia / The Cod Empire, this kingdom is still in exitance for the whole of Empires S2. Empires S2 and Hermitcraft are now connected via the rift and because of people like Oli, Pearl, Mythical and Pix it is also connected to Afterlife.

Witchcraft

Shelby from Empires S2 goes and competes in the challenge. How long after Empires S2 takes place witchcraft happens is so far undecided but it wouldn't be longer than 5 years. Witch Scott and Joey are different people from their Empires S2 counterparts. After becoming a fully fledged storm witch, Shelby goes back to Evermore and continues to live there while remaining in contact with her witch friends.

The Time after

This part of the time line is very un-fleshed out. This is where most of the stories happen. All of the emperors have a way to travel to Afterlife and a few of them can freely go to Hermitcraft. The witches can also get to Afterlife but not Hermitcraft.

Perilla, 1027 Alpine St, Building E, Los Angeles (Chinatown), CA 90012

Not your Korean grandma’s banchan…Perilla started as a pop-up and recently opened a brick & mortar on the edge of Chinatown. The banchan is made with seasonal ingredients sourced from a farmers market. The little side dishes are very fresh and they’re unique. They have some vegan options. The banchan are packed and stored in the fridge. You can pick and choose the ones you’d like.

You can also order rice bowls and lunch boxes that are cooked to order (e.g., dupbab and dosirak). The gimbap was already made though. Beverages, wine and beer are available.

Dosirak with doenjang (soybean paste) marinated cod, steamed white rice, and banchan ($20): So good, the perfect lunch box – just enough food, a variety of textures and flavors, all very fresh. There were two pieces of baked, boneless, marinated cod finished with a blowtorch. The cod was so tender! Delicious soybean marinade, not too strong or overpowering. The white rice was cooked well. The egg & seaweed roll was very tender. Broccolini and tofu was simple and crunchy. The cabbage was my least favorite (too plain). The radish in red pepper had the more traditional kimchi flavor. The radish was crunchy. The potato salad had bits of apple for crunch and not too much mayo.

Broccolini & broken tofu ($6): a lot of thin stems, a bit too salty, but high quality ingredients, broccolini still crunchy

Marinated okra ($8): okra was split down the middle and charred, still crunchy in texture with a tangy marinade of soy, vinegar, sugar, etc. A little slimy. Mr. Froyo really liked it (I don't like okra).

Mushroom seaweed salad ($8): my favorite, the maitake mushrooms were chewy, the dressing was spicy and tangy, there were a few tomatoes, onions, and a bit of seaweed

There is no seating inside but they have a large outdoor patio with cold water and utensils. The shop is hard to spot from the street. It’s behind Heavy Water Coffee Shop. Online ordering is available.

10 Animals in danger due to climate change

Our planet is getting warmer, the threat to climate change is real, and our dependence on fossil fuels is the biggest contributor. Unless we make some radical changes, global temperatures will continue to rise and it will have severe consequences for humans and animals.  

Amphibians such as frogs are vulnerable to desiccation and require moist conditions to reproduce. They are thus at risk from climate change. Decreasing water bodies in Yellowstone National Park, for example, is driving declines in the Columbia Spotted Frog population. Climate change is also causing the rapid spread of the deadly chytrid fungus Batrachochytrium Dendrobatidis, which is endangering amphibians worldwide.

Staghorn Coral (Acropora Cevicornis) has experienced a population decline of over 80% since the 1970’s, mostly due to climate change. It is listed as Critically Endangered on The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Staghorn coral is particularly vulnerable to bleaching, whereby increasing water temperatures cause coral to expel the symbiotic algae that provide its nutrition. Coral reefs are some of the most biodiverse ecosystems on Earth – as ocean temperatures continue to rise, we also risk losing the countless species that depend on reefs for their survival, such as clownfish and hawksbill turtles.

Close relatives of rabbits and hares, Pikas are adapted to cold alpine conditions and are very intolerant of high temperatures. The American Pika (Ochotona Princeps) has been retreating upslope to escape rising temperatures and it is feared the species will eventually have nowhere left to go. In some locations, American Pika populations have already entirely disappeared. Other Pika species native to Eastern Europe and Asia are facing the same dire fate.

The Adélie Penguin (Pygoscelis Adeliae), a well-established resident of Antarctica, is facing tough times due to climate change. The birds are declining on the West Antarctic Peninsula, which is one of the most rapidly warming areas on Earth. The Adélie Penguin’s coastal nesting grounds are becoming increasingly unsuitable for chick survival, and sustained periods of warmer than usual ocean temperatures is negatively affecting the ability of prey such as fish and krill to survive.

The Leatherback Sea Turtle (Dermochelys Coriacea), weighing in at half a tonne, is a giant among reptiles. Like all marine turtles, Leatherbacks are threatened by bycatch, poaching and pollution. Climate change is an additional, rapidly emerging threat to marine turtles globally. Rising sea levels and extreme weather events wash nests away and decrease nesting habitat. In sea turtles, sand temperature determines the gender of developing young – warmer eggs turn into females, cooler eggs turn into males. Under global warming, turtle sex ratios are likely to become skewed, resulting in population decrease.

The Koala (Phascolarctos Cinereus), Australia’s most iconic fluffy marsupial, is likely to become rarer over the next century due to global warming. Koalas have an extremely specialised diet consisting only of eucalyptus leaves. Increasing carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere are decreasing the nutritional value of leaves, resulting in Koala malnutrition and starvation. Longer and more frequent droughts will increase the occurrence of bushfires, which kill millions of forest-dwelling animals like Koalas. Koalas will also increasingly be forced to descend from trees in search of water and new habitats during dry conditions, exposing them to predators and road traffic.

A popular food fish, Atlantic Cod (Gadus Morhua) has been the victim of decades of disastrous overfishing. While the implementation of fishing quotas helped stocks to recover, recent rapid ocean warming has severely impacted cod spawning and survival, causing populations to plummet again. It is thought that warmer waters decrease the availability of zooplankton critical to juvenile fish survival and development. Moreover, to escape the high temperatures, young fish are likely to venture into deep water where they at greater risk of predation.

Beautiful Monarch Butterflies (Danaus Plexippus) are famous for their impressive migrations across North America to reach southern overwintering grounds. Like all butterflies, the Monarch is very sensitive to weather and climate. Increased frequency of extreme weather events is threatening the future of this charismatic species. Furthermore, Monarch caterpillars eat only milkweed – as the climate continues to warm, the butterfly’s range is becoming drier, resulting in loss of vital food plants.

Ringed Seals (Pusa Hispida), polar bears’ favourite prey, are highly dependent on Arctic sea ice and almost never come onto land. Warming spring temperatures and early sea ice breakup are causing nursing pups to be prematurely separated from their mothers. Additionally, warmer ocean temperatures are likely to boost seal parasite populations and the forced migration of seals to more stable ice habitats will facilitate the spread of disease.

The majestic Polar Bear (Ursus Maritimus), a flagship for climate change awareness, is facing an uncertain future due to dwindling sea ice in its Arctic habitat. Longer, warmer summers are causing much of the Arctic Ocean to be ice-free for extended periods of time, decreasing the bears’ access to their primary prey – seals. Consequently, the bears are forced to spend more time foraging on land, where they are at risk of coming into conflict with humans.

For the siren au, there are other sirens outside of Subcon! I’ve mostly planned out Mafia Town and Alpine so far, but even DBS and Nyakuza have sirens!

The sirens in Mafia Town are just. absolutely amazing. they are nearly identical to the Mafia from the head to the waist. From waist down, they have the tail of cod or tuna. And they don’t sing or look hot to attract victims. Instead they lure them in with cod. They dangle the fish to lure Mafia to them to attack.

The sirens in the Alpine are the most strange. They also don’t have enchanting looks or voices. Instead, at night, they lure nomads onto their back and carry them away, where they prey in their new victim. The nomads are compelled to ride them, believing they will help them ascend. However, the Alpine sirens are completely passive when not hungry or when it is daytime. Also- they are very puffy mountain sea-goats.

section taken from Agricultural Innovations of the Romaine and Napolitan Heredical Theorists in the Utter Alpine, an 1865 reference book detailing various advances in farming and husbandry during the Long Peace of late eighteenth century. It was written (originally in Borlish as Tarrouçon Saðer dy Theorist Heredical Romagn e Napollesc ny Doutr-Alp) by farm alchemist Thaubrett of Crowmarsh, affiliated with the Institute for Supply in Axbane. It is notable for interspersing various recipes between the technical discussions, to illuminate the scientific principles at work (and for said recipes, on the whole, not being very good).

Your Downton-y Meals Masterlist

So, you are writing something set in the period between 1900 and 1914. You would like to describe a lavish twelve-course banquet at an upper-class wedding, a breakfast in the Titanic’s second-class dining room, or an era-appropriate snack in an Alpine meadow, but you are not quite sure what menu would convey the right impression? Luckily for you, I have a research addiction and too much time on my hands, as well as pages of notes left over from my research for my Gothic Edwardian f/f!

Here is a list of foods you can use for any particular meal (not at once... usually. Again, twelve-course dinners existed). Note: it’s very much upper/upper-middle class-specific. In other words, as promised, Downton-y. 

Breakfast:

Porridge
