Let's talk about Indigo

I absolutely loved Indigo by Kim Namjoon a.k.a RM-- the poet who speaks of dreams and personalities and philosophies that I never hear of until it comes from him.

Bear in mind, this will absolutely be long and full of unbridled love for Namjoon.

Track no 1-- Yun

This feels like Namjoon's thoughts on being an artist that comes at the crossroads of being purely artist with no obligations to humanity, and an artist that is flawed-- yet does not let go of humanity. A sleek, slow rap song with the gorgeous vocals of Erykah Badu's chorus that breathes spirituality into the lyrics. A song of beige visuals-- a color that is meek in presentation, but bare in its beliefs.

Track no 2-- Still Life.

First of all, the MV is a refreshing feat. The use of Liminal spaces without too many tacky or glittery decorations, gives more breathing space to the groove of this song. It's a song where Namjoon screams to the screen that one thing he'll never be is a passive person. A canvas can't contain, his own reflection cannot contain his actions-- he hops along and dances and vibes. The song has the potential to be a party song, or a hang-out song-- it's a song that makes you and your friends feel invincible. Anderson Paak's vocals give a lighter contrast to Namjoon's deep voice, and helps adding onto what Namjoon is trying to say. Oh Namjoon, you sure know how to pick 'em.

Track no 3-- All day

Namjoon and Tablo speak on two parallel enemies here-- but largely it's the bad faith media. According to doolsetbangtan, "They show cool people dancing in cool clothes, when in real life there are more people with two left feet" is a translation of one of the lines in Namjoon's verse. To Namjoon, misrepresentation annoys him. To Tablo, the subjugation to what is popularised annoys him. Both are valid reasons why they are annoyed with the media.From Namjoon's words and work being misrepresented on the media, to Tablo facing the massive hate train due to online haters because they felt he was lying about his education. The electric song however, stays strong above from getting too angry. Namjoon and Tablo realises that they see things through, and as a result, they must keep their heads above the water from muddling their music. And just like that, we get a bop ya'll.

Track no 4- Forg_tful

This might be a bit of a TMI (I'm honestly so embarrassed even saying this out loud just in case no one actually reads this)-- but sometimes my anxiety and my depressive thoughts do make me forget a lot of things. This song feels a representation of that. It's a song that asks for forgiveness because the speaker is trying-- they are trying so hard but demons still persist. Memory is a frighteningly becoming a privilege. First thing Namjoon does is re-affirm his age-- he's still young, and yet he feels so guilty. The simple acoustic of the song can make it sound light and not as memorable as its previous tracks, but it's a moment for Namjoon to acknowledge certain aspects of his life. And by god, I cannot tell enough how validated I feel by this track.

Track no 5-- Closer

Visual representation of this track-- fingers clawing at sheets with yearning. The smooth track sounds sensuous but it's also the speaker getting frustrated. They are at wit's end on how to get closer to their lover. How in hell can they show how much love overflows in them? Mahalia and Paul Blanco work as great collaborators on this as they help Namjoon weave an atmosphere to this story. It's a slight cheeky song at times, but underneath it all, is the simmering coals on the speaker's desire to feel the overflow of love from their lover too.

Track no 6-- Change pt 2

A sardonic hyper-pop track. Namjoon hates being boxed. He's not the same person he was a while ago, and he hates that nobody lets him change. Towards the end of the song, there's a slight indication of him condemning another person-- basically challenging them that they would have to live a life knowing that they never would love someone like how Namjoon does. Again TMI, but this sort of reminds me of my friendship with someone during my teenager years The friendship wasn't on basis of mutual respect, and became toxic. Once I left, and I changed for the better, my ex-best friend, even though she got the friends she always wanted, loved to remind me how different I was when I was with her. It was a sarcastic and bitter jab. I of course, can't assume the nature of the relationship between Namjoon and the person he is addressing, but I love how I understood this song from a personal angle.

Track no 7-- Lonely

This song was written in Vegas this year, when Namjoon felt lonely in his hotel. I love the neon-lights this song emanates. It's full of clicks and whistles-- the sound of someone just making sounds for the sake of making sounds cuz they can't stand the silence. I can almost hear Namjoon fidgeting just for the sake of passing the time. The line-- "and now I hate the cities I don't belong"-- makes me feel the speaker used to enjoy visiting cities purely as a tourist, but now, he feels the lack of belonging even more and abhors it.

Track no 8- Hectic

This sort of feels like a shout out to his previous song from mono-- Seoul. Namjoon claims his busy life isn't romantic, but the city pop rhythm of the song confuses the listeners into thinking he's singing something magical-- a trap he leaves to show much of a victim we could be to the idea that life of a busybody is more fun than a life of someone who's quiet. This song reminds of late night drives through the busiest parts of the city, where you are stuck in traffic and can't help but observe the people around you who are impatient to get where time dictates them to go.

Track no 9- Wildflower

this song is an allegory to a certain kind of life that Namjoon wants to live as for years. He's explosive in his exhales here, and those exhales get pumped up more thanks to the power vocals of Youjeen who belts into the mic the need to scatter into the sky. The song having the same intro and outdo signifies a full circle that rests as a crown on Namjoon's vision and plans for himself. The song makes me feel emotional (almost every single track from this album does tbh), but this one is the cathartic track. It's Namjoon finally leaving behind the guilt and pursuing for a better health of his mind, his career, and his self.

Track no 10- No 2

Funny thing, but this song sounds like a lullaby being sung by two parents sshvhsdvh. It's a slow acoustic again, but unlike forg_tful, it has a lot more strobe. After wildflower, it's the calmer end, a wistful end. "My felony" rhyming with "melody". This is a song where Namjoon tells to himself that yeah you are regretful of your interviews, of the boxes you have been caged in, of all the commitments you may have forgotten, but you have survived. You maybe cringing or embarrassed by your younger self, but that was because the young you was just trying to survive. It's best to no look back, and just acknowledge that those were the steps that you needed to take to get where you are today.

In all, Indigo feels like a very fully realised album made with care and discretion. I love the sound of it, the colors it exudes, the exciting new artists it introduced me to-- everything. Namjoon bared his soul for this, and yet, does not look back. I don't think anyone will read this extra long ramble piece, I am after all still new to Tumblr, but hey! No looking back, remember?

the last archive of my twenties

He explained in the episode of the jacket shoot, that after releasing Mono that’s black and white, Indigo is the color that express himself (he also mentions it in the interview of Proof collector edition (src)). He adds brown too, with natural and warm shades.

The studio Sparks Edition was in charge of the album design.

Some people also noticed that in Korean, indigo is written 남색, which can be interpreted as an acronym for 남준의 색깔, meaning Namjoon’s colors (cr.).

RM posted several stories on Instagram before the release, including a picture of Oregon blue, a pigment considered as the bluest blue (src).

The title is a wordplay on 불꽃놀이 which translate to fireworks but literaly means “fire flower” (src)

"Namjoon-ah,"

"Yes, hyung?"

"Would you bail me out of jail?"

Namjoon stares at me as if I've lost my mind, he's not wrong. It's been years since I've lost my mind, I just keep growing more and more insane.

"What makes you say that hyung?"

"She still wears those god damned shoes," I grunt as I close the car door too hard making Jungkook who was sitting in the back with Hobi whining and complaining about how I shut the door to hard. Namjoon chuckles as he gently closes the passenger door and walks up next to me, "You've been saying that for years, hyung. Fuck, you even wrote a great track out of it."

"I don't know if she's playing dumb with me or if she's just fucking clueless that it's about her," I huff as I watch her run towards an ice cream truck, "It's literally me telling her to wear something aside from those damn shoes, she'd look in something else,"

Yeah, they’ll be too good to be true

But, what will suit you even better are Jordan numbers

Together with your body, it turns me on even more<

"So you did say in the song," Namjoon agrees "Maybe she thinks its just another song of ours,"

"Namjoon-ah," I sighed exasperated "She's probably the only person we know that wears the abomination like they're slippers," he chuckles "I fucking bought her Fila, Jordan, Louis Vuitton, McQueen, Doc Martens and even damn Christian Louboutin stilettos, but I bet she just put them all on the rack like a collector,"

"I saw her wear the Louboutin's," he comments

"Fucking when?" I asked

"On her 21st birthday," he says

"I don't remember seeing her wearing those," I scrunch my nose at him

"Well," he sighs "You both weren't exactly on best terms that year,"

"Oh," I look down at my shoes burying them further in the sand as I remember the moment where I thought was the end of the two of us. I look back at where Y/n was standing in line with other kids and adults wanting to buy ice cream despite the chilly weather, sensing that I was looking at her, she turns to me and through the mask I could tell she was smiling the way her eyes slightly squinted. She points at the truck as her eyebrows shoot up, almost as if she was asking me if I wanted one, I smile with my mask down on my chin as I shake my head. She raises a thumbs up at me and focuses on the truck again as I pull my mask up to cover my face again and turned to Namjoon.

"Not to bother you, but when do you plan on telling her how you feel?" he asks "I mean it's been what? Eight years? Don't you think it's about time you told her that you love her?"

"Soon," I shot back

"You've said that for years now,"

"Ya! It sounds easy but it's really had to do!" he chuckles "I've been trying to tell her in a very non-subtle way with our songs, but all of a sudden she runs around asking me why I never wrote a song about her,"

"She did what now?!" he asks eye widening.

But perhaps I’ve already been colored by you<

"Wait what? Did I hear you right, hyung?" Hobi asks as he stands next to Namjoon and I, Jungkook joining us and we watch Jimin and Taehyung take pictures of the sunset. We were back at Santa Monica beach after Days one and two of Permission to Dance on stage in LA, it was a mini-break while other were at school or at work during the weekday, we chose a little time out. Namjoon was planning to stay after the concert ends to travel around and visit museums, I decided to tag along as soon as I was done with producing Girl of My Dreams. And I took advantage of this mini-break of ours to visit the beach and hang out with Y/n before I dove back to work, with not just one song, but also Jungkook's upcoming track 'Stay Alive'.

"She asked me a few days ago why I never wrote a song about her after we had a few drinks," I sighed kicking the sand lightly as I walked "I told her she never asked,"

"Wait," Jungkook stopped walking "She doesn't know? She doesn't know that most of the songs you wrote were about her?"

"Especially your parts?" Namjoon asks again eyes wide as saucers

"Sorry, hyung, but we can help but over hear you," Jimin says as he walks up to us "You weren't exactly quiet," he says in a voice only the six of us could hear, Jin hyung was back at the hotel choosing sleep over the beach. I don't blame him, if Y/n wasn't staring at me with puppy eyes I couldn't resist I'd still be in bed. Maybe drag her with me and use her as a pillow just to smell her watermelon scented shampoo and feel her warmth, with her head on my chest.

"It's been eight years, hyung," Taehyung says as he sits next to me on the log we found "When are you going to tell her that you love her?"

"I don't love her," I reply too quickly and when I look up I find my brothers staring at me like I'm the most ridiculous fool on earth,

"No shit," Namjoon says squinting as he pulls up a hand and starts counting tapping on a finger as he goes, "Embarrassed, DNA, Fake Love. Like you haven't displayed your love for her out in the open by showing jealousy, possessiveness, and basically trying to tell her she's your damn soulmate even destiny is pissed off with how you two are acting like children!"

"Namjoon-ah," Hobi gaffaws at how furious Namjoon looks "You forgot I NEED U and telepathy," Hobi says and Namjoon counts those as well

"Oh! Oh! Don't forget my universe, boy with luv and make it right" Taehyung adds

"The truth untold, pied piper" Jimin adds the two songs to the list and they all stare at each other before they said "Seesaw" in unison before laughing.

"Yeah, no shit, you don't love her," Hobi says as he laughs "You even wrote a song about the shoes she always wears because you hate them so much hoping she would get the hint but she didn't because she thought Namjoon wrote it because of a k-drama," making the other members laugh some more. I rub my hands on my face as I watch her walk towards us. Those shoes change colors as years pass for fuck's sake, they're still the same old school, old fashioned high tops.

Anyway, don’t wear converse when you meet me

Rather than the stars in that sky, I’d like to see the stars on your shoes<

"Fucking Converse high." I mutter frustrated, stomping my foot on the sand like a child making the other members laugh some more at my actions.

"What happened to you?" Y/n asks as she reaches us "Who stole your candy?"

"No one stole it," Jungkook says as he takes a deep breath "He dropped it,"

"Now that's just devastating, poor kid" she says as she sits next to me, nudging me with her hip as if telling me to move, standing once again when I didn't move.

"Hey! My spot is warm," I playfully complain, not moving from where I was sitting "Sit elsewhere,"

She stares at me as she eats a scoop of her ice cream from the tiny cup, huffs then shrugs before saying "Fine then," and sitting on my lap making the other members laugh loudly, including the staff that joined with us, causing the few people at the beach stare at us.

When the situation finally registered in my brain I wrap my arms around her almost instinctively and pull her close to my chest and I feel her tense up.

"Why so tense?" I ask her and she turns her head to look at me before pulling my mask down, letting it rest below my chin and shoving a spoonful of mint chocolate ice cream in my mouth

"Get your hands off of me Yoongi Min," she warns playfully

"You're the one who got on my lap, woman!" I talk back at her making the other members laugh at my reaction with the sudden intrusion of the flavor of the ice cream.

"You won't fucking move, man!"

"It's fucking cold, woman!" I complain "I need warmth, I'm freezing"

"That's the reason I wanted your seat! My ass is cold!" we raise our voices at each other playfully and the boys watch us like a ping pong match.

"Ah shibal ya!" I exclaim "I'd rather warm your ass with my bare hands than move from my spot!" I yell in satoori as I look at the other members who fall into another round of laughter ringing in the air. I scowl when I see Hobi point his Polaroid camera at us taking a picture of Y/n on my lap smiling like a champion and me looking like I lost the lottery and gone bankrupt.

"You two are crazy," he comments chuckling "Y/n-ssi, you're cold but you're eating ice cream,"

"It's delicious, minty choco~" she says in a small voice, I would've cooed at her cuteness if only Joon didn't start making retching sounds. She eventually relaxes in my arms and gently rests her head on my left shoulder, sitting with both her legs on one side as she ate happily.

She stays like that on my lap for a few more minutes before the other members suggest we leave the beach and head to a Korean grocery to get some familiar food - mostly ramen, before heading back to the hotel. I was at the wine aisle when Y/n walked up to me with a lot of and different bags of flavored seeweed chips. My eyes instantly fall on her converse that she wore for the day and before I could even stop myself, I ended up opening my mouth and the tactless question was asked.

"Why do you wear those fucking things?"

"Huh? What?" she asks "Which one?"

"Converse high," I say nodding my head in her direction "I guess it would be fine to see you wearing the low ones or maybe sneakers with a cute dress on but why the fuck do you wear those high tops all the damn time?"

"Jeez," she says as she slowly places the snacks on the cart "Calm down with the cursing, Yoongi,"

"I'm just asking," I raise my hands as if the surrender "Curiosity,"

"Why the negative feedback on my babies?" she asks pouting "I love my converse,"

"Where are the shoes I bought you?" I ask pouting "the basketball ones, they're high tops too and much more comfortable than those. Why aren't you wearing those?"

"They're back home," she walks to stand beside me looping her arms around mine as I slowly push the cart.

"Why not wear those?" I slightly raise my voice defensively "You look better wearing those than the... usual,"

"But these are my favorite!" she pouts and I pout back at her

"But you said you liked the ones I got you and you said you'd wear them more!" she shuts up and stares at my eyes before sighing and gently rests her head on my once-very-injured-and-untreated-for-years-shoulder.

"I'm sorry, Sugs," she looks up at me with round puppy like eyes "I didn't mean to offend you," she wraps her arms around me and I wrap my left arm around her shoulder, my thumb lazily rubbing her shoulder blade.

"I'll wear them more," she says nuzzling her face on my neck "But why do you hate my Converse so much?" she asks in a small voice

"Promise me you won't be weirded out and that you'd still consider wearing something else that's not... those," I point at her shoes

"I promise," she says hugging me tighter "I promise,"

She stares at me as I spoke, then she walks out of my arms running away like she was up to no good; looking like a T-rex.

"Oppa!" she calls out "Yoongi is being weird again!"

"Ya!" I call after her as I push the cart and follow her

"Oppa!" she walks behind Namjoon and Hobi, holding the back of their hoodies as she explained what I told her to Joon.

"Why did you run?!" I ask her "You promised!"

"I didn't promise I won't run, Yoongi!"

"But you promised you wouldn't be weirded out!" I exclaimed

"Friends don't call each other sexy or hot, especially not guys to girls,"

"Hey!!! That's where you're wrong, baby," I squint "We're close friends! Close friends! Best friends, baby!" I yell, thrusting my arms in the air with crazy motions along with the words I say.

From the other aisle I hear Jungkook and Jimin's laugh mingle with Taehyung, Hobi and Namjoon's voices and the sound of Y/n's palm hitting her forehead.

"Ever noticed that your rap in Miss Right fits what you want with Y/n?, Yoongi-ya?" Jin asks me as he sat next to me at the hotel's restaurant for breakfast. The other members already sat down and were eating breakfast, I was just waiting for Y/n who was making her way around the food warmers. The hotel's restaurant was closed down with breakfast being delivered to guests rooms, but the management was kind enough to let us and the staff enjoy our meal here along with other businessmen and businesswomen who looked too serious to even notice us.

"Why are you asking all of a sudden, hyung?" I ask as I keep an eye on Y/n .

"I was listening to our old songs last night when i came across Miss Right and heard your rap," Namjoon looks up from his plate to Jin as if he grew another pair of heads like a hydra.

"Oh shit!" he exclaims "He's right! Damn! You two really are soulmates!"

"Keep your voice down, Namjoon-ah!" Jin quietly scolds him and he quickly apologizes before shoving food in his mouth to shut up.

"Soulmates," Jin repeats shaking his head "Armys would be happy to know that Min Yoongi's soulmate has been his muse for years now.

"You mentioned to the others you're gonna tell her soon about the songs and the truth? How?" he asks as I watch her make her way towards the waffle table in her shorts, white t-shirt and those fucking shoes and her dark blue hair down. I throw my head back and internally groaned closing my eyes to avoid the sight of her legs that seemed to go on and on... then you see those abominations that ruin her look.

"Yoongi-ya!" he groans "It's been almost a decade! When are you going to do it? When are you going to tell her that you love her?! When you're 40?!"

Behind us where Hobi, Taehyung, Jimin and Jungkook were sitting Hobi snorts loudly followed by heavy coughing and Jungkook tapping his back.

"You don't find a woman like her every day, hyung," Jungkook says from the seat behind me "You're lucky that she's still around and single. If you don't do something about it you're gonna end up waiting until you're both old and gray, or worse, she's married to someone else."

"It's not to pressure you hyung," Jimin says calmly "It's just a little confidence boost. We know you love her and that you two are obviously meant to be together."

"As a believer in destiny, I believe in the fact that she's it for you" Namjoon says as he drinks his coffee "If she wasn't meant for you, she would still be with that scum bag and she would've stopped being friends with you. Destiny returned her to you when it knew you were ready to be with her. All you had to do was take your steps, unfortunately you only made a few baby steps and didn't take the big step. Or as they call it, leap of faith".

"Don't wait for her to slip away from your fingers, Yoongi," Jin says with a tone of finality "She's right in front of you every day, she learned a new language and culture just to be friends with you,"

"She also moved counties, left a guy and chose your friendship over the asshat," Taehyung points out "If that doesn't

"Leap of faith," Hobi happily says from behind me as I watch her walk towards our table, her plate piled up with different kinds of food. Mainly protein and carbs.

"Buffets fear you, Y/n-ssi" Namjoon says when she sits down beside him.

"It's breakfast, Joonie," she says as she shoves a spoonful of omelette and bacon bits into her mouth followed by a baked potato wedge then continues with her mouth full, "Most important meal of the day!"

"Ya! Manners. Chew your food before you start talking you big baby" I lightly scold her

"Ya!~ Manners.~ Be a gentleman and get me a cup of coffee~ " she shot back adorably with a sting when swallowed her food when she saw me get up eyeing the coffee machine. I hear the other members snort laugh and chuckle as they try to control themselves from laughing too loud at 8am. She was the only woman who had the audacity to not use honorifics with me and I let it pass because I love her, she isn't exactly Korean. But moments like this where she'd act cute but lace it with venom sometimes make me wonder what planet she came from or how in the world did I end up falling in love with a woman who was not only quite similar to me with a combination of all the members various traits, but someone you'd only see in movies or read in books who have such confidence that makes you want to kiss the living shit out of them. And even though that confidence was mostly just around the seven of us and a few of the staff who have been with us for so long, I still loved the little outbursts.

What was only embarrassing about the way she caught me off guard, was I had no comeback so I just stared at her for a minute before shaking my head, making sure she heard me I muttered "You're gonna pay for that, baby" as I went and grabbed two cups of coffee for the two of us, only to be rewarded by a flying kiss and a thank you, with a chuckling Jin. I did say she absorbed a few traits of the other members, didn't I?

"I'm bored" she complains as we sit in the gazebo we found at the park. It wasn't too far from the hotel and the concert venue, but it was far enough to get some peace from the buzz of the staff and the others. I wanted to go alone but I needed inspiration, so I dragged Y/n along with me. She was reading a historical romance novel about an Old Hollywood star and her seven husbands that she said was rumoured to be adapted into a movie some time next year or later.

"You're reading a book, you can't be that bored," I smiled at her through my face mask "You didn't even spare a glance in my direction the second opened that book and kept reading. Now that you're done with eleven pages, you're telling me you're bored? How?"

She stares at me for a second before sitting up, placing a bookmark before she places the book in between us on the table, "Were you watching me the whole time?"

"Jagiya, how can I not? I'm writing a song and you're in front of me. Naturally, my attention was else where because of my ADHD. You caught my eye, Jagiya..." I muttered the last part

"Did you just call me 'Jagiya'?!" she exclaimed, eyes wide. a new reaction compared to the countless times I playfully called her that, even a far off reaction to almost two weeks ago when I asked her to join us for the tour.

"W-what? N-no," I stuttered "You're hearing things," she squints her eyes at me

"I know what I heard, Yoongi"

"Your ears?" I say as I point at my own "Broken. Your ears are broken.

"And you're gonna be broken if you say it again," she laid back down, book on hand.

"What's wrong if I did call you Jagiya?" I ask as I tread on dangerous waters "Are you dating someone?"

She puts her book down and sits once more "No, I'm not. But, I just think we shouldn't joke around with the endearments anymore, Sugs. What if someone recognizes you and hears us? They might think we're dating and I don't like to put that idea in their heads-"

"What's wrong with us and dating?" I cut her off defensively "Don't you think it's... cool if we, who have been friends for eight years, end up dating?"

"Yoongi, it's just think it's wrong-"

"And I just want to know why you'd think that way?" I slightly raise my voice out of frustration, tossing the notepad that was once on my lap onto the table, "We've been calling each other endearments since 2015! We've been like this since 2015! What's wrong about it now?"

"Yoongi, calm down-"

"I can't calm down when you're saying stuff like that to me!" I naturally slip into satoori during my outburst and it didn't stop there.

"Calm down, Yoongi!" she firmly says "You're being irrational, calm down! All I'm trying to say is that I don't want you to be in trouble for being with someone like me. If they assume we're dating, it's not going to look good for your image,"

"Fuck my image, Y/n-ssi!" I spat out "You say shit like that and I feel like we're back to square one all over again. It's like the Love Yourself tour all over again. For fuck's sake, just tell me if you want me gone because you're seeing someone who yet again wants you away from me" I slip back and forth between the Seoul dialect and Daegu dialect.

"Yoongi, that's not it" she says "I'm not seeing anyone, you're the only one I'm always with"

"Fuck that shit," I scoff "this is exactly what you said to me before the fucking scum bag told me to cut ties with you!"

"Wait what?" she asks

"You fucking heard me!" I got up and grabbed my notepad, song writing long forgotten "The son of a bitch told me that you said you didn't want me around anymore and told me to fuck off. I didn't believe a single shit he said until I saw you run to his arms like some sort of fairy tale happy ending." I stepped out of the gazebo and looked back at her "You looked like you met your fucking prince charming and I looked like the villain when all I was an NPC in a game; programmed to say back, shut up and watch as you walked away from me, and I was left to wonder if I was ever going to see you again when you left with him without even saying goodbye."

I sighed heavily, rubbing my hand over my forehead, "Do you think it was easy to lose someone so close to you? I felt dead inside, Y/n! You, the members, you're all I have. I miss my family back home but you're more prominent than home. He fucking told me to cut ties with you, told me that you hated- no fuck that, he said you loathed me, because I was being weird and clingy all those years and he told me that you asked him to say with him for the night so that I'd stay away from you, and I believed him when I saw you smile at him and kissed him" I raised my hands up as if to motion around me "How do you think my world was huh? Watching you go out of town with him, spend time together like it was a fucking honeymoon, leaving without a trace only to apologize saying you're already back home in your country. What the fuck am I to you, Y/n?!" I ask with tears in my eyes

"Yoongi, I didn't kn-" she tried to say but I cut her off again.

"You what? Don't bother answering. I already know I'm just a friend to you. It's okay." I scoff as I walk away to one of the two cars that went with us to the park. By the time I reached the hotel lobby, I don't even know how our conversation ended up there, but I didn't care. It was all out there now. Now she knew why for two years I avoided her. Those years I did nothing but write about love, pain and heartbreak. Her. It was all about her and for her. And it was for me; younger Min Yoongi who wanted so bad to tell Y/n L/n how he would leave everything behind if he could and all she had to do was say the word.

"Make sure she gets back safe, and join her if she needs to go somewhere," I inform security to inform the other staff "Keep an eye on her please, make sure she's okay and that she doesn't go anywhere alone, I just need sometime alone, I can't see her when I'm like this" our head of security nods as he presses on his ear piece to transmit the message.

"What happened?" Jin and Namjoon asks as they catch what I told our security to do "Where's Y/n? I thought you took her with you?"

"Do you remember what I told you during the Love Yourself Tour about... him?" I ask Namjoon quietly and he nods

"Yeah, why?" he asks

"I told her about it, minus that I've been in love with her for.. a while now." I sighed "I need sometime alone. I'll see you guys later," I wave at them as I walk to the elevator and made my way back to my room, half relieved that a good weight off of my shoulders has been lifted, half mixed emotions of regretting my actions and concern that if I didn't lose her then, I might have led myself into losing her by my own actions.

No doubt she's probably understood by now how I feel about her, but it was the right thing to do... right?

I mean, she was supposed to be my soulmate. She is my soulmate...

...right?

there was no particular reason i wrote all this down other than reading the translations to my universe made me cry last week because i’m just Like this. this is a mini compilation of yoongi lyrics that i hold gently in my palm and close to my heart in a he’s my artist for life kind of way. these aren’t all my favorite yoongi lyrics, i certainly have more but not ones that fit this general vibe.

this is like extremely disorganized, i kind of just wrote it like a journal (and i’ll probably copy it to my bullet journal at some point actually). interpretations are my own, music is cool in that we can all read and hear the same thing and get different things out of it (which is why yoongi has often said he doesn’t attach specific meaning to things, giving it up to the listener instead)

so yeah. here’s me being fond of yoongi in 4k for no reason other than. idk. i wanted to. all translations are from doyoubangtan and doolsetbangtan.

to me, this perfectly encapsulates what creating music is for yoongi in a two-fold kind of way. not only does he want his music to be a source of comfort for those who listen to it (just as the art of music is for himself), he’s also consistent in his assurance that taking a rest is okay. not being okay is okay. simply existing for the time being is okay. it’s a gentle empathy that comes from the experienced heart of someone who’s not going to tell you that it is okay, but will tell you that it won’t always be like this. friendly little moon trying to get you to smile with him on sleepless nights.

so far away - agust d ft suran

dream, will eventually be in full bloom at the end of hardships

this was on my undergrad graduation cap. it’s one of my favorite lyrics of all time. if so far away is my heart song, this is my heart lyric. this is a common motif in yoongi’s lyrics; dormancy is only temporary, you will bloom at the end of the cold winter.

dream, hope it to be there with you at your creation and at the end of your life

creation to end is another common motif n his lyrics. in this specific context, i imagine it to most closely be analogous to holding dreams close to you your entire life. dreams are dreams no matter how they manifest, even if they’re simply something you long for until your “end”.

Hope it to be there with you at your creation and at the end of your life; It will be generous to you wherever you stand; It will eventually be in full bloom at the end of hardships; The beginnings will seem humble, so prosperous will the future be

the entirety of this song reads like a story and this last refrain reads like the conclusion (kind of). the slight wording change from the previous choruses means a lot in that regard, more definite and firm. you will be okay. maybe not now, maybe not next week. but you will be.

suga’s interlude - halsey ft suga

Though the dawn before sunrise is darkest; don’t forget the stars you longed for only rise in the darkness

just a really pretty but heart wrenching lyric in the context of the entire song. he’s also used this metaphor several times. i love me a good string of consistency with minor adaptations to fit the vibe. this song also made me cry the first time i read the translations lmao.

my universe - coldplay ft bts

Because the trial we face now is just for a moment anyway; All you have to do is to just keep shining bright like now; And we will follow you, embroidering this long night

this could mean so many things depending on how you wanted to contextualize it. of course the song is about love, so you could view it in that way. we’re in the midst of a global pandemic where we can’t see each other. or maybe it’s simply existence. continue to exist and one day your bright light will be followed even in the darkest of nights.

also the og title of telepathy being 잠시 (for a moment) is so...min yoongi you are so cool

people - agust d

Did someone say humans are the animals of wisdom?; The way I see it, humans are the animals of regret

super simple to understand which i think makes it more poignant. especially if you contextualize it with everything he’s said or written regarding the plight of fame and how he himself grapples with it as min yoongi.

just this whole song. if song request encapsulates yoongi’s musical ethos, this captures a lot of his general musings.

paradise - bts

Just living like this, surviving like this, that’s my small dream; Dreaming dreams, grasping dreams, breathing breaths, it’s often too much

a more blunt take on the simply existing is a good enough dream. yoongi’s 2018 new years message was one of the things that made me go “yes. Him™” so paradise is very <3 for me

interlude: shadow - bts

Flying high scares me; I mean, nobody had told me; how lonely it is here –;how my leap could be my fall

another thing he uses frequently, even as recently as an interview regarding permission to dance. the contemplation of how a fall is far scarier than landing because getting back up is uncertain.

Yeah, I’m you and you’re me, do you finally get that now?; Yeah, you’re me and I’m you, do you finally get that now?

the entirety of this song is haunting particularly paired with the sampling and the music video as a visual but this part is just...the whole idea of competing internal voices throughout the narrative of the song or if you’d rather truly treat the lyrics like a piece of literature, you have quite the unreliable narrator, one that’s trying to grapple with his own sense of self.

140503 at dawn - agust d

Pretending that I’m not lonely, pretending that I’m not suffering; needlessly pretending that I’m okay, and pretending hard that I’m strong; I built a wall in front of me, “Don’t come inside”; I’m an island in this wide ocean, “Don’t abandon me”

the entirety of agust d just makes me ache but i mainly pulled this part because he uses the island metaphor consistently. here, it’s used like i said before; achingly.

this song also gets overlooked a lot in the larger context of agust d but anyway

eight - IU ft suga

Island, yeah this is an island; a small island that we made for each other; Yeah, mm, forever young, the word ‘forever’ is a sandcastle; A farewell is just like an emergency text warning of a disaster; A morning met together with yearning; As each of us pass this eternity, we’re sure to meet again on this island

can i be honest and say i forgot this song came out at the beginning of the pandemic. anyway, if you haven’t heard the various times that jieun has spoke about this song and it’s conveyance, i encourage you to. the music video also gives a beautiful visual.

i wrote a small analysis of this when it came out so i’ll just put it here

I hope you don’t forget that giving up decisively also counts as courage

of course this can absolutely be taken at a literal meaning especially considering he said a similar iteration of this to someone on kkul fm BUT i also like looking at it in context of the entire song because maybe this is him trying to convince himself too, especially considering the wording of the last chorus doesn’t change it so it implies in order to get past the fire u need to let it burn first? burn it = giving up on some aspect of pain?

i see why max didn’t shut up for eight months about making this song i wouldn’t either hello

outro: tear - bts

im including this one firstly because i love the song but secondly to say i knew the second u all were surprised by yoongi saying he wrote this as essentially a break up song for bts and they all cried while listening to it that y’all don’t actually read or interact w their lyrics fjdklafjsd

once again i don’t have a specific lyric to pull i just love this song so much and i feel like it isn’t talked about enough because first of all the use of the basketball throughout the instrumental, the incorporation of the origin of his stage name into an entire song regarding his general existence as a performer and coming into the beginnings of sizeable fame, and just his general way of essentially writing one giant ode to something he loves and analogizing it to something else he loves to talk through internal struggles.

The Significance of BTS’ Dionysus

Note: Although it's a bit late and there are probably many theories about this song already, I still want to give my take. I was actually supposed to post this two months ago but didn't finish it due to my schedule. Also, I’m afraid I have to warn you that this analysis is really long.

All song on Map of The soul: Persona are unique and meaningful in their own way, but Dionysus is possibly the track that we need to pay attention to the most, for so many ideas could be interpreted from it. Not only is the song a certain kind of a statement from BTS to the public, but it is also important in term of narrative to Map of The Soul series. To understand the underlying messages of this track, we may look at what the myth of Dionysus tells us.

PART 1 – The Allegory of BTS Phenomenon

I’ll begin with the origin of Dionysus and its relation to BTS’ career history.

Among the Greek gods, Dionysus is special as the only one who is half-human, half-divine. Granted that the tradition of consuming wine has been an intimate activity of human since nearly the beginning, the god of wine is one of the two “best friends of mankind” alongside Demeter, the goddess of fertility and agriculture. Rather than being regarded as the one who belongs in the upper world, he is consider to be a great god of earth.

In much the same way, BTS stands out from other idols or celebrities, who were commonly deified by the public and their fans. While the artist holds the reputation of being the divine, they openly acknowledge and encourage the mortal side. That is to say, they don’t establish a kind of relationship consisting of the worshiped (celebs) and the worshipers (fans), but communicate with us like a person to a person, reducing the distance separating the gods from the followers.

BTS are not preoccupied with maintaining a certain image constructed to impress the audience. They aren’t afraid to show weaknesses, flaws, and worries, coming across as not different from us normal people. The band speaks with sincerity and eliminates the boundaries between the state of being divine and human. This closeness is what tightens the bond they have with ARMY. For this reason, BTS is also “the best friend of mankind” just like Dionysus.

What is more, the story of Dionysus’ life from birth to death can precisely represent BTS’ journey into the world of music. The myth covers the concept of embarking on a journey as a sign of entering adulthood, battling against the non-believers, and transcending suffering and death—or like this part of Yoongi’s verse:

“Born as an idol, then reborn as an artist.”

BTS’ success in breaking into America is how they proved themselves to those who looked down on them in the past. Nonetheless, they still can’t avoid the same old unwelcoming attitude, now coming from another industry. The fight against racism, xenophobia, and the attempts to damage their position at the top still goes on, and they will have to continue to find a way to survive it.

The same scenario happens to Dionysus. When the god reaches his hometown, the king of Thebes, Pentheus, who is actually his cousin but doesn’t recognize him, thinks that Dionysus and the maenads are “queer,” “objectionable,” and “should be stopped” (familiar, isn’t it?) No matter how Dionysus tries to persuade Pentheus, he strongly refuses to acknowledge him as his god. The king’s final destination is far from favorable, as he rejects and insults the divine.

This raises some questions: Is the king “blindness” towards Dionysus’s divinity “ignorance” or “prejudice”? Which one, then, defines people reaction when hearing BTS’ name? Regardless of the answers, those who dare to threaten the god will eventually meet their doom like Pentheus. It doesn’t matter what opinion you have against them, BTS is here to stay, they’re here to celebrate. And that’s exactly what the Greeks do to worship Dionysus. The god’s glorified resurrection was celebrated by doing plays in theater.

Similarly, performing Dionysus is how BTS proclaims their victory over the sufferings they have experienced, which made them stronger and shine brighter ever than before. The stage is the theater for their play, and we are the audience invited to witness their glory.

The myth of the god of wine therefore is the perfect allegory for BTS’ story. It’s suitable that the track was placed at the end of the album because it shows that this is where they ended up being after the long journey over the past 6 years. It’s also the fact that BTS chooses not to be resentful towards their past; they’d rather celebrate it, meaning they are not willing to let any obstacles restrain them. This song is a way to present themselves as the greatest boy band in the world. Whether you agree or not, one thing still stands: it’s certain that you won’t be able to escape from them.

Breaking a new record is a race with myself, a race, yeah

Raise the glass of celebration, one shot

PART 2 –Enjoyment & Pain

Since Dionysus is a symbol of wine, it’s impossible not to discuss about alcohol as a coin with two sides: it can give rise to both enjoyment and pain. Dionysus can be, as he was sometimes regarded, “the god of holy inspiration,” motivating people to act bravely or creatively, but at the same time he can be cruel, driving men on to madness and frightful deeds. His character clearly depicts that of alcohol.

The dynamic between enjoyment and pain in alcohol illustrates that it’s not possible to enjoy something without experiencing any resistance or limit. This leads to the conversation about two relationships: one between BTS and their audience, the other one between art and artists.

Comparing BTS to wine is pretty accurate. There is no need to say more about how much fun, joy or inspiration they can offer to their fans. And who are the ones that are the most drunk in BTS? While Dionysus has the maenads, BTS has us, ARMY. Our force and dedication for the artist is unstoppable to the point of madness.

Still, one thing that needs to be noted is the opposite side of the situation, for as much as BTS offers immeasurable satisfaction and amusement, there can be a few drawbacks as well. This is an appropriate occasion to bring back “Pied Piper,” a critical and playful track about the negative effects of falling into the BTS loophole. It’s the same as getting drunk at a party knowing that you’re risking to be late or miss work the next day. In addition, too much dose of BTS can lead to excessive obsession and the loss of decency, the kind of behavior we see in sasaengs/stalkers.

Though I’m a bit dangerous, I’m too sweet

I came to rescue you, I came to ruin you

In this way, BTS has beneficial and destructive side. In them there exists the ability to generate enjoyment and pain like alcohol. And while the band is the best gift to those who appreciates them, they are also the industry’s worst nightmare.

BTS climbed their way up and succeed without any external help and cheating, which makes some people really mad so they are trying every way imaginable to undermine them. Some even enjoy doing it without realizing that in such a way they are somewhat addicted to the artist instead. Even this kind of obsession is still an indicator that those antis are being under the influence of the wine called BTS. After all, it has been said before that a hater in a way is a fan too. This highlights the fact that BTS needs not to fear or worry about antis because making people mad is Dionysus’ specialty. Without this characteristic, BTS cannot be like wine/the god of wine. Considering this, we may say that haters are not actually ruining BTS but making them who they are (by giving them the quality that constitutes their identity.) That’s one way to look at it.

I’m going to move on briefly to the relationship between art and its creators. Art to artists is the same thing as what BTS is to ARMY. It was already stated in the lyrics. The song clearly addressed the pain of creative process, for it’s not something that can be avoided.

Drink it up (the pain of creating)

One sip (Okay now I’m ready to sho)

For both artists and consumers, art indeed produces pleasure as well as comfort, but the agony that artists have to endure before they can create a work is tremendous. And isn’t that often pain itself is what gives birth to a work of art? Here I quote Herman Hesse’s Steppenwolf:

“Thus, like a precious, fleeting foam over the sea of suffering arise all those works of art, in which a single individual lifts himself for an hour so high above his personal destiny that his happiness shines like a star and appears to all who see it as something eternal and as a happiness of their own.”

The song itself is a proof to this statement. BTS have been through so much to reached where they are today, and thus “Dionysus” pays homage to their hardships. In a way, those difficulties are what enables them to fully cherish the value of their achievements and provides them with inspiration for their works.

All in all, the two cases associated with the theme of enjoyment and pain point towards the idea that joy and suffering can co-exist in one thing and cannot be separated. We’d better embrace this truth so that maybe we can profit from the two of them. This can be applied to several aspects in life as well.

PART 3 (END) - What the Song May be Telling Us

So, where do we go from here? Where do all of the topics I’ve mentioned above come together? As Map of The Soul: Persona refers to, according to Carl Jung’s theory, “the aspect of someone's character that is presented to or perceived by others,” Dionysus is a song that speaks about what can obviously be seen about BTS: the story about their success, their fans, the obstacles they face as an artist. These seem to belong to BTS’ persona.

Meanwhile, the song also lets us get a glimpse of more serious topics that might appear in the next comeback. There are clues to possible discussion about the bad side of their fame or the path they walk on, together with how they have or have not come to term with it. This might be the overall message of the upcoming album. BTS might also talk about how they identify themselves as an individual and as a superstar —the struggle to find a balance between being a god and being a human —or about the hidden negative part of themselves, as it was included in the definition of shadow.

It’s also interesting that Dionysus wasn’t called an outro, which may mean that the song is a kind of a transition into the next album. Because Map of The Soul is a journey into oneself, all parts in this series are connected to the same path. This track is like a checkpoint leading us to the next destination. And the whole series itself seems to be the representation of the self (That’s probably why we only have hints about persona, shadow and ego). Compared to the LOVE YOURSELF series, divided into parts with different themes and tones as it narrates a sequence of an event, each album from Map of the Soul is likely to be integrated into one big part, which I would say makes sense to me #.

Autobiographic references in BTS discography

This post is part of the TSU. It belongs to the first part: Biography.

Suga explained in an interview that all their songs were personal and inspired by their own lives. However, there are some that appear as more biographical than others. Even though they decided to share these stories with us, it remains the boys’ life and as such, there won’t be in-depth analyses.

The origins: using 사투리 (Satoori) and talking about Korea

Korea used to be made of 8 provinces that all have their own culture and variation of language (called satoori). As the boys come from different places, they use different dialects that are sometimes different from standard Korean. For details, I let you refer to the analyses linked below.

The point here is that while most of their songs are in standard Korean, there have been times where they used satoori. The biggest case is obviously “팔도강산” (Paldogangsan, meaning “the scenery of all parts of Korea” and titled “Satoori Rap” in English; lyrics here) but you can also find some in “어디에서 왔는지” (Where did you come from? Lyrics here) and “Ma City” (lyrics).

“Satoori Rap” and “Ma City” are also the occasion to teach us more about the land of Korea and some of its different regions.

Last detail about “Satoori rap”: it was originally a song released in 2011 by the rap line only (src)

More recently, BTS also showed Korean traditional culture to their fans through the song “IDOL” (lyrics). The lyrics, dance, outfits, and background all include elements from the Korean culture (see the post about “IDOL” for a list).

This is important on two levels.

First, South Korea has a heavy history of intern conflicts between the regions. One sadly famous fight is between the Jeolla province (J-Hope’s birthplace) and Gyeongsang (Suga, Jimin, V and Jungkook’s birthplace). Muish has a note about it and ARMY SALON made a complete post about the Gawngju uprising from May 18, 1980. It’s thus a meaningful move to integrate the different regions of Korea in one song, as a message of peace and a reminder that they’re all from the same country, as explained by RM in “Satoori Rap”:

“Why Keep Fighting Either way, they’re all in Korean Look up, and we look up at the same sky”

Note that however, the boys clearly stated that they made “Satoori Rap” “for fun” and to “diss each other” (src).

Second, K-pop is usually seen as a Korean copy of Western pop music. Integrating purely Korean elements thus counter this cliché. It seems there was a real intention of making Kpop evolve - or more exactly make it go back to what it was at the time of Seo Taiji and the Boys (see Vox article and this extract from COOLKKADANG EP. 312 (20190522)) - when the boys debuted. Not a purely commercial product but an art with a message. It would thus be important to call BTS a Kpop band because that way they can make the notion of Kpop evolve. The problem is that they redefined the genre so much it can’t really be conceived as K-pop anymore. The boys have also decided to rather focus on just doing their thing rather than being a superhero.

The introduction: 2, 3 방! 탄! 안녕하세요 방탄소년단입니다

BTS introduced themselves through several of their songs. The rap line explained to us how they got into hip-hop in “Skit: Circle Room Talk”, “길” (Road/Path), and later in Dark & Wild’s “힙합성애자” (Hip Hop Lover). You can find more about BTS and their relationship with Hip-Hop in the Socio-political narrative part here.

2 Cool 4 Skool plays its role as the first contact between BTS and the public. “Intro: 2 Cool 4 Skool” explains the goal of the group:

“2 cool 4 skool We tell our story on behalf of those in their 10s and 20s you take that”

The lyrics from “We Are Bulletproof pt.2” present the group and emphasize how they worked harder than anyone before debuting:

“At the practice room instead of school I danced and sang all night While you all played I lived my dream”

“Everywhere I go everything I do I’ll show myself as much as I’ve sharpened the knife All those people who’ve ignored me now Oh oh oh oh oh oh hey shout it out Oh if you’ve done as much as me throw a rock We go hard we’ve got no fear”

And in the first hidden track, “Skit: on the starting line”, RM talks about the feelings he had while he was a trainee.

An idol’s everyday life

BTS has kept us updated on their whereabouts through other songs. While “Skit: Circle Room Talk” and “Outro: Circle Room Cypher” were staged to sound like they were at school, even ending interrupted by the teacher for the skit, “Skit: R U happy now?” is closer to the boys’ idol life as it happens in a car before a fansign. It’s hard to know how much in their skits is scripted or not (RM talked about how they recorded skits in his Vlive about Her here, at 37:10, and said they had no script but they did talk about it beforehand and the recording was later edited) but all the following ones until 화양연화 Pt.2 will be about the boys’ lives as idol: in “Soulmate” they fool around in the studio, in “Expectation!” they want the first place in music shows and in “One night in a strange city”, they bicker after a concert. The last Skits to date are “Billboard Music Awards Speech” and “Skit: 망설임과 두려움” (Hesitation and Fear). The first one is about BTS’ being acknowledged in the US - and basically worldwide - and thus reaching yet another stage in their career while the second is about the doubts they have after reaching such a place.

There are two more songs about their everyday life: “Rain” that express their emotions on a rainy day and “이사” (Moving On), a song about their first dorm and all the memories it holds. It’s the place we see in Rookie King and during the first birthday party, that they left a bit before 화양연화 Pt.1 and “Moving On” were released. They then settled in the one we see in the first Bon Voyage and in the 2015 Festa.

I’ll also quickly mention “Spring Day” here because the lyrics were inspired by the friendship between RM and Suga, the two members that have been together for the longest time - since 2010.

Interestingly all these songs (except “Spring Day”) are focused on a moment: the skits are little sketches while “Rain” and “Moving On” are about a specific emotion they had at a certain time.

Bangtan’s rise

Opposite to those works about one specific episode, there’s a whole other series of songs, this time dedicated to BTS’ constant hard work since pre-debut. Songs by BTS for BTS, songs that help them stay aware of what they’ve accomplished and what their next goals are. It started with the confidence of getting more and more popular in “진격의 방탄 (Rise of Bangtan)” after the success of 2 Cool 4 Skool:

“Who are we? The rising Bulletproof Boy Scouts Who are we? We swallow them all up without fear Cuz we got fire, fire fire Get higher, higher higher If you don’t know us, then take a good look Who are we? Who? The rise of Bangtan”

Then before they’ve realized it, they’re celebrating their second year of activity in Dark & Wild’s “2학년” (2nd Grade):

“In the blink of an eye, I become a second grader The me who only used to chase my dreams now sets fire on the stage”

“Rise of Bangtan” gains a younger sibling in 화양연화 Pt.1 with “흥탄소년단 / Fun Boyz”. Each member has his own part to tell his story and brag about how they’re fun to hang out with, succeeding at remaining friendly while doing so and not sounding full of themselves.

The Most Beautiful Moment in Life has also more serious songs about their hard work, namely “Dope” and “Baepsae”. However, as these songs can also apply to the whole generation BTS belongs to, they’ll be considered in details in the Socio-political narrative part. Same with “Not Today”.

“Never Mind” is in the same vein of “I can and will do it” but with a darker vision:

“NEVER MIND NEVER MIND No matter how thorny the road is, run NEVER MIND NEVER MIND There are lots of things in the world that you can’t help You better NEVER MIND NEVER MIND If you feel like you’re going to crash then accelerate more, you idiot NEVER MIND NEVER MIND We’re too young and immature to give up, you idiot NEVER MIND If you feel like you’re going to crash then accelerate more, you idiot If you feel like you’re going to crash then accelerate more, you idiot NEVER MIND”

“Whalien 52″ brings a sadder note to their journey as they reveal this path is not only hard but also full of loneliness.

They’re also aware the dream will eventually end. “Epilogue: Young Forever” is very realistic about it:

“It can’t be mine forever The applause I say to myself shamelessly Project your voice higher, farther Even though there isn’t an eternal audience I’m going to sing I want to be myself today forever I want to be a young forever”

Yet, it’s not enough to make them give up so they keep singing, they keep believing and thus followed “Outro: Wings”:

I trust myself, Since the reason why my back hurts Is so that wings can sprout I believe me, you, though the beginning may be humble, The future will be prosperous

It’s not stated explicitly but the boys explained in later songs that those wings were given by ARMY. Thus the fans saved the artists that had saved them first.

WINGS also contains a series of solo songs that have been the occasion for most of the boys to look and see where they are now: Jungkook thanks his hyungs for raising him in “Begin”, Jimin misses his innocence in “Lie”, Suga remembers how his love for music started with a brown piano in “First Love”, RM philosophizes about the world in “Reflection” and even hints the thematic of self-love, J-Hope thanks his mother for always supporting him until he succeeded in “Mama” and Jin admits he may never be the best but he’ll still try his hardest in “Awake”. It doesn’t seem “Stigma” has biographical elements, it’s rather centered around the BU story.

The Love Yourself series initiates a whole new reflection that’ll be considered in a future post.

BTS shared a lot with us, be it their convictions, their stories, or their cultures. While they started with the idea of protecting the youth, they’ve eventually evolved in friends of the youth and they renounced to this superhero mission. In the same way, they constantly promise to aim higher and to work harder but they’ve learned to enjoy the present as everything will eventually come to an end.

Summary of Smeraldo

Smeraldo (Italian):

1. Noun (m plural smeraldi): emerald (gemstone) Lo smeraldo è una gemma verde. ― Emerald is a green gemstone.

The first time the term “Smeraldo” appeared in BTS content, it was in a tweet posted by Jin on the 9th August 2017, and accompanied by this photo:

After some research, ARMY discovered a blog called Flower Smeraldo and that Smeraldo was the name of a flower - the ones we see in Jin’s arms above. All of this content is actually a creation from Big Hit for the Love Yourself series and the BU. ARMY thoroughly searched everything about Smeraldo and Youes made a thread about it on One Hallyu. This post is mainly based on this thread, with the addition of the content released in 2018.

Flower Smeraldo

It’s a blog owned by a character named Testesso.

First, there was a series of posts published in 2017 that was eventually deleted. However, the translated blog created by ktaebwi is still up so you can see it here.

The first posts were reposted in 2018 but we also got modified and new ones (translation by Cafe ARMY).

In 2020, a third iteration of the blog happened. The first two posts were similar to the previous years but the third story (English translation by Haru and Doolsetbangtan), the ninth story (English translation by Haru), the tenth story (English translation by Haru), and the eleventh story (English translation by Haru) were completely new.

This an element from the BU: the identical posts are due to time travel (the past is happening again) and to Seokjin’s actions (he met Testesso the first time but not the second one, thus the different posts).

The story of Smeraldo

Through these blog posts, Testesso told his and Smeraldo flowers’ stories. These stories are the posts that were posted in both 2017 and 2018. There are seven posts in total and you can read their translation in English by ktaebwi here.

The legend of Smeraldo is similar to classics like The hunchback of Notre-Dame or Beauty & the Beast - where a monstrous being has to live hidden and can’t receive love. It’s apparently an authentic Italian oral story (the original has an epilogue where the man pays for the funeral and is finally able to give the flower, on the girl’s tomb).

The legend has been referenced in “전하지 못한 진심” (The Truth Untold), a song in Love Yourself 轉 Tear. The lyrics are similar to the story. It also connects with the concept of the album, where the Boy changed himself for a girl to the point of becoming unable to recognize himself, but remained unable to receive love.

We also have a reference to William Ashbless in 花樣年華 The Notes 1, in the last double-page where you can see an abstract of a paper titled Study on the Narrative Structure of Playing Cards: Focusing on The Flower Card.

In the BU

Past the 7th story post, Testesso’s publications are very close to the BU.

His posts from the 15 August 2017 and 30 August 2017 fit with Seokjin’s Note in Her and Tear for August YEAR 22. In addition, Jin is seen with a bunch of smeraldo flowers in his Love Yourself poster. It’s also identical to the end of the Highlight Reel, where we learn why Seokjin went to buy Smeraldo flowers: because he found a girl’s diary relating how she wanted to find this flower. He did it for her, to show her the flowers while giving her back her diary.

On September 3, Testesso announced that for personal reasons, he had to stop his activities. The day after, “Serendipity” was released and we didn’t hear of him until the reposting in 2018.

This time, Testesso’s post for the 15 August 2018 explains that he didn’t see anyone. It fits with Seokjin’s 30 August YEAR 22 Note in Answer where it’s explained he renounced to search the Smeraldo flower and just gave the diary back to the girl. There are two new posts following this modified one: the first announces the opening of the shop, the second is the day before the opening where the florist is worried by a typhoon.

Those two new posts are actually references, not to the BU, but to the Love Yourself Tour in Seoul, which was held on the 25 August at Jamsil Stadium - same place and same date as the Smeraldo shop. And indeed, there was a shop at the concert venue where ARMY could buy Smeraldo merchandise. The opening of the shop was also the occasion to see the Smeraldo logo which is a combination of the logos for the Love Yourself Series.

References to BTS

There are actually several Easter eggs in this fictive creation, which helped the fans realizing Big Hit was behind everything, even before it was officially stated:

The blog was created on the 4th July 2017, the same day BTS new logo was revealed

The smeraldo flower was discovered on June 12, 2013, the date BTS debuted

There was an event where people were offered to submit a story. There were 7 winners (as many as BTS members) and the limit date to submit was August 15, the date the last episode of Bon Voyage was released. Salon translated a thread written by one of the winners here.

“BTS” is in the file name of the pictures on the blog. In the same idea, you can see “Seokjin’s flower” in Korean in the metadata of the page

In a picture showing the first order, we can see that the customer’s signature is identical to Jin’s. Same with an Instagram post showing Jin’s handwriting. Another element relating to Seokjin is a screenshot, taken at 12:04pm (as in December 4th, Seokjin’s birthday)

Testesso/”te stesso” means “yourself” in Italian, as in Love Yourself

Spam comments under the blog posts actually redirect to BTS MVs

The official description of the song is a funk-pop genre track, singing the delight of a small and simple love, about one’s interest and love of another. It not only expresses the enjoyment and fluttery feelings of love, it consists of a melody that is easy to listen to. (src)

The literal translation of the Korean title is “A Poem For The Small Things” (src). The English title is a reminder of “Boy In Luv”, the main track of Skool Luv Affair.

Singin in the Rain

Singin in the Rain is a 1952 musical movie where a crew makes one of the first talking movies. It was explained in official articles (trans) that the MV is a homage to the movie.

Several posters of the movie can be seen here and there in the background.

Note that in the top picture, some of the posters on the wall are for the 1951 movie I’ll See You in my Dreams. It’s visible on j-hope’s picture in the memory album for 2019.

And you can also see a reference to the infamous scene where the main character sings “Singin in the rain” in the street under the rain. j-hope even does the same move with the street lamp.

Another reference is during RM verse. In the movie, they describe a scenario about a young man coming to the city to become famous and eventually succeeding. The scene referenced in the MV is the moment when the man is famous and on top of the world.

RM also has an umbrella - that looks like it’s a fan gift - instead of a cane, keeping with the title of the movie.

@780613 on Twitter made a video listing those references as well as more subtle ones and tropicalilies drew parallels between the movie and the concept of Persona

The theater is named after ”Boy With Luv”’s album, namely Map of the Soul Persona.

“Singularity” is the comeback trailer for the second album of the Love Yourself series, Tear.

As usual, when there’s a TV, there’s no signal.

Last detail about this room. During the shot where V is standing at the center, the walls are duplicated: on the left, the same door appears twice and on the right, it’s the noticeboard and the flowers. It’s not a mirror effect, it’s really copy and paste.

The flower he holds could be a Smeraldo flower... or just a blue flower, hard to tell

The final shot with the tear reminds one of the final shots from “Blood, Sweat & Tears” with Jimin. In a similar fashion, the black-winged statue from “Blood, Sweat & Tears” as well as Jungkook and Jimin in the trailer for The Wings Tour have colorful tears.

DNA stands for DesoxyriboNucleic Acid. It is a very long molecular chain, present in all of our cells. It’s made of the association of four different molecules, called nucleosides. They have the same structure, except for one part that can be either Adenosine, Guanosine, Thymidine or Cytidine (A, G, T, C). Those molecules are aligned one after another in a chain, for example, ATGCGCGTTTACCGGATTT. It’s their order that determines everything about your body: from the color of your eyes to how well you store fat, passing by which one of your toes is the longest, everything is determined by DNA. It’s something we share with all living beings: animals, vegetals, fungi...

References to the molecule were made in the MV.

Several times, chains of DNA can be seen in the background and there’s also one that can be seen very briefly, shining on Jungkook’s arm during the point move.

At other times, it’s the little pieces constituting the chain that appear.

In-the-vortex also found a link between those four molecules and the colors used in the MV.

Another thing about that MV is that it’s the first time a title track is linked to his comeback trailer.

The intro of “DNA” (above) is actually a passage from “Serendipity” (below) played backward, without Jimin.

A last word about the dance. If you feel like the moves are similar to Bangtan’s previous choreographies, you can check that post on the waitingformycoffin blog. It justifies the presence of those familiar moves by linking them to the structure of the DNA.

Several of the exterior scenes were shot at the quarry of Hanil Cement (cr. @btsinfo1)

The person reflected in the blue eye is Jung Kook. And the eye is also Jung Kook’s.

“Not Today”, the title of the song, is written on the walls of the building they’re all in. This shot was created by ZADDICTED. The building was an abandoned tobacco factory in Cheongju (src). It has been renovated since then.

In the basement, on the wall in the back, there’s a piece of art we can catch a glimpse of while RM is walking.

It shows a landscape with a road in the middle, going from the foreground to the background, framed by an arch.

The people in all black are 30. It’s the case for the whole MV, the scenes with more people were edited - if you look closely you can see several identical silhouettes in those.

Mysterious people in black already appeared in “불타오르네 (Fire)”. They’ll also appear in “Mic Drop”, where the director explained they’re haters turned into followers. It’s most likely also the case in “Not Today” since rather than running after the boys it seems they’re running and falling with them.

In the basement, the pillars are identified by a letter and a number. They’re all between the pillars B5 and E5.

One of the back dancer (on the right) doesn’t have his balaclava on during the scene on the rooftop.

You see it better in the choreography version but the extras imitate a machine gun shooting at the boys - and as they’re bulletproof, they don’t fall.

During the shooting scene, everyone, including the people in black, falls. Jung Kook is the only one standing. It’s the part following Jung Kook’s eye close-up, which appears again here.

Also note that at the same moment, in the choreography, they also mimic the action of being shot but they don’t fall because they’re bulletproof.

At first, we can see V in Iryeong station. There’s something with the station names written behind him.

If you compare with the pictures of the Naver Starcast article, you can see that these names were changed from Songchu to Pohang and from Sinchon to So... Jangheung and Neunggok were erased (you can see it a bit later). Uijeongbu and Seoul weren’t changed though.

Iryeong is a station on the Gyooe Line, connecting Uijeongbu to Neunggok. I joined a map of the line below. And he’s not in front of different board, there’s only one in the station. Here are an album and a blog post of hikers that walked along the line if you want pictures of the station.

On the other hand, Pohang is a city almost at the opposite end of the country (see the other part of the map). From what I’ve found, Pohang is where Homigot is (it’s the bit of land on the right of the blue point on the map). Homigot is “the easternmost point of mainland South Korea.” So people go there to see the rising sun. @btsboo explained in this analysis that the apparition of Pohang is connected to The Ones Who Walked Away from Omelas.

After coming down on the line, V puts his ear on the railroad. It’s a technique - often shown in movies - to hear if a train is coming. And there’s actually the sound of a train just at this moment.

In the next scene, they’re at a motel named Omelas. It's a reference to The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas by Ursula K. Le Guin. The car that can be seen on the right is a sixth generation Ford Mustang. RM goes in the room R102.

About The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas, it’s a text describing the city of Omelas, near the sea and where a summer festival is held. They’ve reached an incredible level of happiness, but at the price of one child’s own happiness. As long as the child isn’t happy, all the other inhabitants are. It’s a paradox that makes a lot of inhabitants suffer, sometimes to the point that they walk away from Omelas.

Armysalon translated an interesting article about The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas and “Spring Day”, written by a major publishing company.

During the attack on RM, all the members - V isn’t visible in the MV but you see him in the episode - are seen throwing food at the leader, like a cake or BOOMCHICKAPOP Sweet & Salty Kettle Corn.

Jung Kook is in front of a merry-go-round on which is written the name of the album: “You Never Walk Alone”.

The criminal who wrote “monstur” on RM’s right cheek is Jung Kook.

Jin pierced Jimin’s left ear with a safety pin.

Just saying but Hobi’s brushing his teeth with his index...

And Jin’s wearing red high Converse, the pair RM praised in “Converse High,” a solo song he released on the group’s Soundcloud before a group version was added in 화양연화 Pt.1.

During the scene in the stairs, there are only six members, V doesn’t appear. (Fun fact: based on their outfits and on the episode, they may have filmed this scene while V was filming the one at the train station and then they got together for the scene on the clothes mountain.)

Jin and V make the same gesture with their hands, figuring a frame in front of them. (Note that Jin was associated with a polaroid during The Most Beautiful Moment in Life.)

All along the MV, we can see Jimin carrying a pair of shoes (see the end of the post for explanations).

Concerning his scene at the beach, it was filmed where they also made the photo concept, at Jumunjin’s beach.

@brolovingtsukki noticed an interesting reflection effect on that shot. It also happens in "Blood, Sweat & Tears” Japanese version.

In the laundromat, you can see a poster advertising a Crossover washer and the same mountains that’ll appear in “Daydream.” The clock indicates 9:35.

Now about the shoes that Jimin picked up and kept with him. At the end of the MV, the shoes are hanged to a tree, filmed in Hyeongdo island (cr.), most likely near Seodalli road (cr.). It has several meanings but one of them is to commemorate the death of a person. The person’s shoes are hanged where they died as a memento.

We got more details about the meaning of those shoes in the episode of Good Insight dedicated to Bang Shihyuk. A member of Lumpens explained the shoes are people who are different and the boys take those people with them and make sure to remember them (the hanging on the tree).
