All true following of Christ begins with faith, or we might almost say that following is faith, for we find our Lord substituting the former expression for the latter... ‘I am come a Light into the world, that whosoever believeth on Me should not walk in darkness.’ The two ideas are not equivalent, but faith is the condition of following; and following is the outcome and test, because it is the operation, of faith. None but they who trust Him will follow Him. He who does not follow, does not trust. To follow Christ, means to long and strive after His companionship... It means the submission of the will, the effort of the whole nature, the daily conflict to reproduce His example, the resolute adoption of His command as my law, His providence as my will, His fellowship as my joy. And the root and beginning of all such following is in coming to Him, conscious of mine own darkness, and trustful in His great light. We must rely on a Guide before we accept His directions; and it is absurd to pretend that we trust Him, if we do not go as He bids us. So ‘Follow thou Me’ is, in a very real sense, the sum of all Christian duty.

You have to live with Him day by day, and year by year, and to learn to know Him as we learn to know husbands and wives, by continual experience of a sweet and unfailing love, by many a sacred hour of interchange of affection and reception of gifts and counsels.

The risen life of Jesus is the nourishment and strengthening and blessing and life of a Christian. Our daily experience ought to be that there comes, wavelet by wavelet, that silent, gentle, and yet omnipotent influx into our empty hearts, this very life of Christ Himself.

Those who know Your name...
Those who know Your name will put their trust in You: David understood that the help of God wasn’t given just because God favored some and opposed others. It was because His people have a relationship with Him (know Your name), they have faith in Him (put their trust in You), and they seek Him (who seek You).
i. It is a serious trial to the child of God to feel forsaken by God. There are particular times when we are likely to feel that the Lord has forsaken us.
When we have sinned.
When we face great trouble.
When we have some great job to do.
When we feel our prayers are unanswered.
ii. Yet we can find refuge in seeking God, in knowing His name. “To ‘know Thy name’ is here equivalent to learning God’s character as made known by His acts.”

...Christ, in His sweetness and His gentle sustaining help, comes near to us all across the sea of sorrow and trouble. A more tender, a more gracious sense of His nearness to us is ever granted to us in the time of our darkness and our grief than is possible to us in the sunny hours of joy. It is always the stormy sea that Christ comes across, to draw near to us; and they who have never experienced the tempest have yet to learn the inmost sweetness of His presence. When it is night, and it is dark, at the hour which is the keystone of night’s black arch, Christ comes to us, striding across the stormy waters. Sorrow brings Him near to us. Do you see that sorrow does not drive you away from Him!
Alexander MacLaren; Commentary on John 6:16-21

tagged to rec five of my own fics by @penny-anna, thank you <3
old ghost's waltz
Rolling his foot from side to side, Jamie bumped the edge of his shoe against her calf. “It’s like mendin’ somethin’, I think. Like your dress, there.” His toe traced around the corner of a patch. “It’s different fabric, ye know, but it’s – coverin’ up a hole, at least, even if the tear’s still there beneath it.” He huffed out a smile, his cheeks reddening so slightly she almost missed it. “That’s what I always thought, anyway.” There was something distant on his face, a glassiness in the way his eyes drifted up to the clouds above. And there was someone else on his mind. A ghost, sitting with him. Just as Alexander’s ghost sat with her, one hand in hers, dragging her down through the earth that had swallowed him. Jamie’s ghosts pulled him up, instead. Drawing him into the sky. The thought twisted a knife into her chest, somehow. Kirsty MacLaren has never believed in ghosts, or spirits, or men from other worlds. But they sit with her regardless, after the deaths of her father and brother - and the ripples cast by one of them might just change her life.
this is my absolute favourite thing I've ever written, it is THE fic to me. my first time writing kirsty, my first time really actually properly getting into jamie backstory stuff/my post-war games jamie timeline. I do intend for it to be part of a trilogy someday, and also I want to write a proper post-war games longfic from jamie's pov, but if none of those things ever happen then I'll be happy just having written this.
unsorted
But that wasn’t the point, was it? The point had never been Eòghann, too busy with Sàra to laugh at a silly old joke with him. It stung, yes – but like the snow, he could brush it away easily enough, and still never dip into the yawning gap in his chest that lay beneath it. The first traces of watery light were creeping over the horizon, just where the line of the trees parted into fields. Sunrise would be many hours away yet, the deep blue of the night splitting into lighter colours – and here, caught between night and daybreak, he could almost believe nothing would ever change. If nothing ever changed, then nobody could grow up without him. He wouldn’t turn around and find all his friends sat at the back of the ceilidh-house – and he wouldn’t look down at himself and wonder if he had been left a child, watching them run on ahead. Over and over again, Jamie tries to understand himself.
another fic with a bunch of jamie backstory content, you can absolutely tell I love playing with that setting/those characters ajgkfd. but also this fic (or the thought of writing something like this fic) lived in my chest for probably 5 years before I finally plucked up the courage to write it. it's so so so personal to me and writing/posting it felt very soul-baring and the fact that people responded positively to it just fills me with indescribable joy
There is Music of the Birds in it (and Music of the Sídhe)
"I remember there was always music. Everywhere we went, the selkie songs echoed through the water and on the beaches, sometimes for days afterwards, like they'd been caught on the kelp and the stones." The people of the sea can seldom stay with those they love, but their songs always remain.
ohhh god this is six years old now. but this is also a fic with a very special place in my heart, even though it's old, and I think I'm a much better writer than I was back then. technically there is a third part to this series also!! & I swear to god one day I will write it. (I just need to get over my fear of writing longfics & also learn a whole other language so I can see the film that inspired it which is totally @ettelwenailinon's fault <333)
in the night i lie and look up at you (when the morning comes i watch you rise)
“Settle down,” he said, regretting it only after the words left his mouth. Suppose this was just the Doctor’s way of getting to sleep. But he froze at the sound of Jamie’s voice, eyes almost luminous beneath the angular shadows of the crumpled bedcovers. “I don’t bite or anythin’.” “I know you don’t bite,” the Doctor muttered. But a moment later he sighed, almost shrinking down into the mattress. “My people, ah – don’t make a habit of sleeping. And certainly not communally.” Jamie grinned again at that. “Mine do.” In the shadows, he caught a faint glimpse of the Doctor raising his eyebrows, his mouth tightening into a wry smile. “So I gathered.” Five times Jamie wondered why he woke up alone, and one time he knew.
this one was just. SO much fun to write, it was a real breakthrough moment in me writing a bunch of longer stuff which felt so good. and I think it came out really well!! there's just a bunch of little headcanons and bits and pieces scattered through the whole thing, it's like. this is the source code for how I write two/jamie in a way. also the first time I actually dared to tag a fic as ace two/jamie (and poke at it a little bit more in a fic) which again was super personal & nervewracking
a light in bitter dark (i think i'm ready to go)
Victoria might have liked to stay. It was hardly unreasonable, was it? All the others had, after all, and some of them had stayed in far worse places than this. But it simply hadn’t occurred to him that Victoria’s time might be approaching. Maybe he had grown complacent, really, so used to Jamie walking beside him and promising him forever. It ought to have been his turn to go, after all, now that Ben and Polly had found their way home. But Jamie stood so firm, and made that promise with so much steady confidence. And now the Doctor was starting to wonder whether there was a part of him, buried deep in his hearts, that believed it as much as Jamie seemed to. They all promised him forever, though. In their own ways. And a Time Lord, of all people, should know that no forever really endured. Five times the Doctor couldn't bring himself to say goodbye to Victoria, and one time he managed it.
of course I HAD to get a victoria fic in here ajgkdf. I tossed up a couple but in the end it came down to this one (ashamed to admit that it was in part because of the title. rip. it is one of my favourite titles I've ever used tho). I love love love love writing victoria angst and also lesbian victoria content and I got to do so much of that in this fic <33
the first three fics on this list were pretty obvious picks but I was tossing up between a few for the last two, so a couple honourable mentions:
The Falls
inkstains
somnium
should i have bent, been reshaped in your image
the love that you need will never be found at home
litany for a reunion
tagging @galacticlamps @hesgomorrah and anyone else who wants to do it!!!

“As the flowers follow the sun, and silently hold up their petals to be tinted and enlarged by its shining, so must we, if we would know the joy of God, hold our souls, wills, hearts, and minds, still before Him, whose voice commands, whose love warns, whose truth makes fair our whole being.
God speaks for the most part in such silence only. If the soul be full of tumult and jangling voices, His voice is little likely to be heard.”

November 10th 1839 saw the birth of Thomas Ross, he became best known for the partnership of MacGibbon and Ross, who wrote comprehensive multi-volume books about Scotland’s castles and churches.
If you haven’t heard of the duo, I can be sure that you will have seen some of  his drawings that were included in their books, I have used these many many times on my posts to show how castles would have looked in the 19th century. Thomas Ross was the son of a farmer, also Thomas Ross, and Ann Murray. He was born at Wardheads, Errol, and attended local schools before going to Glasgow around 1855 to work as an assistant to architect Alexander Kirkland. He soon moved to the office of Charles Wilson, winning a measured drawing competition during his time there. He spent the proceeds on a study trip to Yorkshire, visiting Fountains Abbey among other sites.
In 1862 he began as an assistant to David MacGibbon in Edinburgh, and was made a partner in the firm of MacGibbon and Ross ten years later. Soon after this he married Mary MacLaren. Ross began sketching the architecture of Scotland along with his senior partner, contributing to the latter’s public lectures, and culminating in the pair’s major publications. After MacGibbon’s moved to the continent, Ross managed the practice alone, and also continued to make sketching trips for their ongoing publications. The books brought in many commissions for restoration work, but many schemes were never realised, and business declined generally.
After MacGibbon’s death in 1902, his place was taken by his son Alfred. Ross himself was appointed as a founder commissioner of the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland (RCAHMS) in 1908, and was awarded an honorary degree from the University of Edinburgh in 1910. RCAHMS is now a  part of Historic Scotland, holding many photographs and artwork from our old buildings, also giving details of field reports of visits made to these structures through the years, again a great resource for me when I put a post together about a castle and it’s history.
Fred MacGibbon was later appointed architect to  RCAHMS, but was diagnosed as diabetic and resigned in 1914, dissolving the practice. He died the following year.
Ross continued alone until 1916, when he retired to his home in Saxe-Coburg Place, Edinburgh, occasionally undertaking small commissions. He was arrested in 1915 for sketching in a prohibited area, while studying Rossend Castle in Fife, and fined five shillings. In 1918 he was elected to the Royal Scottish Academy as Professor of Antiquities.
He died three years after his wife, at the age of 91, and was survived by his son James MacLaren Ross, also an architect, and two daughters. He is buried in Comely Bank Cemetery in north Edinburgh.
