The Volturi Guards x Head Scratches

Felix:

He was honestly surprised the first time you started playing with his hair and scratching your nails lightly against his scalp

The Volturi isn't exactly known for their soft touches or loving nature. Even as a human, he had never known such comfort, having been thrown into the pits from the moment he was able to wield a sword

That's not to say he wasn't enjoying the feel of your gentle scratching

In fact, now that you've introduced him to the concept of playing with his hair you're gonna have to do it move often

He'd definitely rate it a 10/10

Jane:

Jane is a bit of a toss up

On the one hand she remembers the comfort her mother playing with her brought and is brought back to those moments when you run your fingers through her blonde locks as you're both relaxing in her room

But on the other, having flashbacks to her past could lead to flash backs of the fire and the villagers circling her and Alec as the flames licked at their skin

If that happens she will definitely shut down and avoid you for at least a couple hours if not the rest of the day

Don't take it personal, though, she loves how gentle and caring your touch feels but sometimes the memories are too much

7/10 enjoyment

Alec:

With Alec it's also kind of a toss up but for a different reason

He also gets flashbacks sometimes but rather than making him shut down, it can make him reveal a lot of the trauma him and Jane went through

Now you're crying for them and he's feeling bad for making you cry

However on a good day, he'll relax so much under your skilled tugging and scratching that it's almost like he's able to sleep

7/10 as well

Demetri:

This mf-

Once you re-introduced him to head scratches it's game over

He's actively tracking you down at random times of the day to get you to mess with his hair

He hasn't had someone play with his hair since he was a little boy joking around with his father and he doesn't plan to let that feeling go anytime soon.

11/10 enjoyment

It's like eating something you haven't been able to eat in a long time for him

Some Peace On The Porch (Reba Hart x OC)

Summary: Reba and Alex escape the craziness in the house by sneaking out for a quiet moment on the porch swing.

Alex joined Reba on the porch swing, happy to get a moment's peace from the chaos going on inside the house. All in all, things went well. Barbra Jean was nothing but supportive, Van made a couple of jokes that Cheyenne had elbowed him in the ribs for. Jake had a lot of questions, and neither she nor Reba had been able to answer them all. That’s what had led them both outside.

"Are you alright," Alex asked gently as she sat down.

"Just a little overwhelmed, I think."

Alex nodded. "I can understand why. This was a big step. On the bright side, I think we have a while before anyone notices we're out here."

At that, Reba smiled. Alex put her arm under Reba's knees and pulled her legs over her lap. "No funny business," Reba warned, shaking a finger at Alex.

"Wouldn’t dream of it," Alex replied. The smirk on her face would beg to differ, but Reba knew she’d keep her word.

Alex laid her arm across the back of the swing, draping it over Reba's shoulder when she came in closer and rested her weary head in the crook of Alex's neck. They sat this way for maybe five or ten minutes, it’s not as if they were counting. "We should go back in," Alex said.

"I know," Reba replied with a sigh.

Alex placed a chaste kiss on the top of Reba's head and reluctantly disentangled from her. "Come on," Alex offered, extending a hand to Reba. Reba took her hand, and together, they went back in to face the family.

Request for @aquanova99​ - Okay I just binged read all of the Alex Cinderella stories I was wondering if you could write a one shot or something angsty about the fallout of rigatoni leaving. Like how Jacob is doing, I’m sorry but Jacob angst is just 🙌

Summary: One year after Alec turned Y/N and the mate bond between Demetri and Ness was confirmed, the Volturi find themselves travelling to Forks for a very special occassion...

Y/N was finally out of her ‘newborn’ phase and life at the castle couldn’t be better. Her and Alec had grown so much closer than she had ever imagined and she finally understood what the others had told her whilst she was human, vampires feel the mate bond more intensely than humans, that vampires love more deeply than humans and lastly, that vampires are more protective of their loved ones than humans.

Y/N’s gift had also improved over the last year and this saw her join the Elite Guards on a few missions, something she enjoyed and Alec was positively beaming with pride over. “Well done my love” He praised her after she was able to keep a set of rogues in her sight as they tried their best to evade Demetri’s tracking abilities, her teleportation and shield working to her and Demetri’s advantage “Yes, Well done Cinders” Demetri added smiling.

Alec and Demetri were planning something special and romantic for their mates, Y/N and Ness respectively, although neither male knew what the other had planned as they both kept their plans a secret from everyone in the castle.

Alec had arranged a little get-a-way to Paris for himself and Y/N. She had mentioned once that she had always wanted to go to Paris, something she never got the chance to do as she met Alec and became a vampire after graduating from High School.

Alec took Y/N to the Eiffel Tower and they made their way to the top so they could admire the view before them. Alec surprised Y/N when he got down on one knee, taking her left hand in his and looked up at her “Y/N I feel so lucky to have you in my life and I love you more than I ever thought possible. I couldn’t imagine my life without you in it so…will you spend forever by my side as my wife?” Y/N’s eyes filled with tears and her other hand was on her chest as she nodded “Yes, yes” She replied low. Alec smiled and slipped the Diamond and Amethyst ring onto her finger before standing up and capturing her lips with his. The people around them started clapping and multiple “Congratulations” filled the air. “I love you Alec” “I love you too.” He kissed her again, wrapping an arm around her.

Demetri had planned his proposal to Ness down to the last detail, he was leaving nothing to chance. He had even arranged to meet Edward in Seattle two weeks before when he was in Canada for a lone mission. “Hi Edward, thank you for meeting with me” “Hi Demetri, that’s ok. Is everything ok with Ness?” He asked a little concerned “Yes, she’s great. She’s settled into the castle nicely; I think having Y/N and Alec around helped with that” Demetri replied and Edward nodded “Is everything ok between you both?” “Yes, we’re doing really well actually. That’s why I wanted to meet with you. I have something I want to ask you…” Edward smiled knowingly despite not having read the tracker’s thoughts “…As you know Ness and I are mates and I love her more than anything, she’s my entire world…” Just talking about her made him smile “…I was hoping you would give me your blessing to marry her” Edward thought for a moment and chuckled “What?” “I can’t believe you’re asking me if you can marry my daughter, I mean you’re older than I am and that custom wasn’t around when you were human” Demetri chuckled and rubbed the back of his neck “Maybe not, but the custom was around when you were human and it’s one I thought you’d appreciate me honouring” “I do appreciate you asking me and of course I give you my blessing and I’m sure Bella would agree. I mean there isn’t another man out there I’d rather see her with” Demetri smiled wider and shook Edward’s hand “Thank you Edward. I will continue to love and protect her forever” “I know you will” Edward responded, a big smile on his face too.  

Demetri had planned a trip to Sorrento, Italy for himself and Ness as he knew how much she liked to be by the sea and that she wanted to visit Pompei, which was nearby. Sorrento came to life of an evening too, the different bars and restaurants lit up and if you stood overlooking the sea you could see across to the other side of the island and the lights of the properties there. “It’s so romantic here” Ness’ soft voice reached his ears and he smiled “It is and I have a surprise for you” He took her hand in his and led to down onto the beach, walking hand in hand until they came to a secluded area. Ness gasped when she saw the blanket laid out before them and a vase full of the brightest red roses she’d ever seen. They took a seat on the blanket and Demetri picked up what looked a bottle of red wine. He poured some of the liquid into the glasses that Ness was holding and the rich aroma of A Negative blood hit both of their senses. He placed the bottle back in the basket and took a glass from her, she leant forward and kissed him soundly on the mouth “I love you Demi” “I love you too Ness.”

A few moments passed as they took in the sight around them and Demetri began to feel a little nervous. He took a deep unneeded breath and put his glass to the side and carefully took hers too, she opened her mouth to say something but stopped when he took her hands in his. “Ness, the last few years with you have been the best years of my existence and I am so happy I get to call you mine. I love you more than I can ever put into words, you are everything to me, my entire world and I can’t imagine you not being by my side forever…” He took another unneeded breath “…Will you do the honour of being my wife?” The tears that had collected in the corner of her eyes fell down her cheeks as she threw her arms around his neck, his arms wrapping around her waist “Yes, a thousand times yes” She pressed a kiss to his neck and felt him relax in her arms and she chuckled “Were you nervous?” “A little” He admitted low and she pulled back a little to look at him “You’re so cute” She gently tapped his nose and smiled at him. He pulled back a little further and removed the Diamond and Sapphire ring from the black velvet box and slipped it onto her finger. She gasped at the ring “Oh Dem, it’s beautiful” “Only the best for you darling” He pressed his lips to hers in a sweet kiss “I also know that Sapphire is your birth stone” She rose an eyebrow at him “I googled it Ness, I wanted the ring to be special to you” She smiled “It is special because it came from you” Her hand stroked his cheek as he wrapped his arms around her and pulled her towards him for a passionate kiss.

Alec and Y/N arrive back at the castle at the same time as Demetri and Ness, bumping into each other outside the entrance to the castle. “Ness” “Y/N” Both girls call out the same time and embrace one another briefly before pulling back and speaking at the same time again “Guess what” Both girls waving their left hand around showing off their rings “AH! OH MY GOD!” They exclaim together causing Demetri and Alec chuckle at their mates “Congratulations Demetri” “Thank you and congratulations to you too Alec” The two vampires shake hands and give each other a one arm hug. They turn to look at their mates who are admiring each other’s rings and discussing their proposals as they make their way inside. 

The four of them made their way to the throne room to tell the Kings and spotted Felix and Jane on duty “Two birds one stone” Alec murmured as he glanced at his sister and friend and back at the Kings. “Welcome home” Aro greeted them with a smile, Caius and Marcus nodding. “Thank you master” Demetri replies and the others smile and nod “We have some news we would like to share with you” Alec added and noticed that Aro’s ruby eyes had lit up, clearly having caught sight of the rings on Ness and Y/N’s fingers. “I proposed to Y/N whilst we were away and she accepted” Alec said, grinning widely at everyone in the room “Congratulations dear ones” Aro replied and turned his head to Demetri as Marcus and Caius’ congratulations sounded around them. “I too proposed whilst Ness and I were away and she accepted too” The Kings smiled and clapped “Congratulations my dear boy…” Marcus said smiling “…and you my dear” “Thank you Marcus” Ness replied “Yes, thank you master” Demetri added.

Felix and Jane approached the newly engaged couples and gave them their congratulations and Jane admired both rings smiling wide “I finally have a sister…officially speaking” She said as she hugged Y/N tightly, Y/N chuckled and returned the sentiment.

The girls were so excited and stopped to tell everyone they saw on route back to their rooms, Heidi being the first to see them once they left the throne room. “Heidi, look” Ness calls out and she holds her left hand out, Y/N doing the same. Heidi’s eyes go wide at the size of the sparkly rings on their fingers, her gaze lifting to see their mates smiling behind them “Ahh! Congrats girls” She says excitedly and hugs them both at the same time “Well done boys, you finally put a ring on them” She nods at the girls as she moves past them “Thank you Heidi” Demetri said smiling “Yes, thank you” Alec added.

The following day the two couples were discussing what needed to be done in order for them to marry. “Uncle Jasper can help with that, he has a contact back in Forks” Ness told them “Ahh, and so I do darling, but he’s here in the city” Demetri replied “Really?” “Don’t sound so surprised. How else do you think we’re able to fly commercially when needed, or drive the amazing cars we own?” “I guess I never really thought about it but Jasper will still help if needed” Ness replied. “Any ideas of what kind of wedding you girls would like?” Alec asked, Ness and Y/N looked at each other briefly before turning back to look at their mates “Double wedding…” They said together “…In Forks” Demetri and Alec were surprised by that response but nodded with a smile “Both of our families are there and it’s not like I can invite my shifter friends to the castle, is it?” Y/N added and Alec nodded “And we can have the wedding at my grandparent’s place as it has a secluded garden” Ness offered “What do you think Demetri? How does a double wedding in Forks sound?” Demetri thought for a moment and glanced at Ness who had a hopeful look in her brown eyes “I’m ok with sharing our special day with you and Y/N if you’re ok with it?” “I’m ok with it too and let’s face it…it’ll make those two very happy” Alec replied nodding in Y/N and Ness’ direction. Both girls squealed excitedly and wrapped their arms around their mates in a tight hug. “There’s another upside to having a double wedding…it means we all only have to travel to Forks once” “Very true Demetri” Alec agreed. 

The girls rang their families to tell them their good news and there was more excited screams and happy tears on both ends of the phone. “I’ve never seen them so excited” Felix chuckled “I know right. Who knew weddings had that affect on women” Alec mused aloud “I knew Ness would be excited to plan our wedding but I didn’t expect her to be this excited, especially as we’re getting married at Carlisle’s” “You serious Demetri? I could have told you how excited she’d be, I mean it’s her wedding… and she’s marrying you in her hometown” Jane smiled at him knowingly and Demetri nodded and smiled back.  

Y/N and Ness designed their own invitations making the decision to send one invite announcing the double wedding. Alec and Demetri liked their choice of invite, having decided to let the girls deal with the invitations whilst they were on guard duty. They got Gianna to post them out on their behalf when she posted the castle’s correspondence.

The Cullens received their official invitation in the post and Esme and Bella couldn’t stop smiling and were pleased that Ness wanted to get married at the main house. Charlie and Sue were also pleased to hear that Ness and Demetri were happy and that they had decided to get married in Forks.

Y/N’s parents and her shifter friends were pleased to receive an invitation to her wedding to Alec although they were surprised to read that it would be a double wedding and that it would held at the Cullen house but were looking forward to seeing her again, especially as she’s immortal.  

Billy opened up the cream envelope that was lying on the doormat and saw that it was an invitation to a double wedding; Alec Volturi and Y/N Y/L/N and Demetri Volturi and Renesmee Cullen. “What’s that?” Jake asked as he took the card from his dad, a moment later he threw it onto the table. “Jake, calm down” Billy said as he looked at the invitation on the table but Jake wouldn’t listen, his heavy breathing getting louder as he kept shaking his head, trying to fight the urge to shift “Ness rejected you romantically years ago and you were told that she is now mated to a vampire…” “I DIDN’T KNOW SHE’D MARRY THE BLOODSUCKER” Jake yelled cutting Billy off “Well she is and there is nothing you can do about it” Billy replied “LIKE THE HELL THERE ISN’T” He yelled over his shoulder as he made his way out of the house.

Jake arrived at the Cullen house quickly having phased, he was now standing outside their home in a pair of shorts. “What are you doing here Jake?” Bella asked from the balcony “I’m here to discuss Ness and that bloodsucker” He growled back “There’s nothing to discuss. Ness is with Demetri and they are in love” Bella replied calmly “She can’t love him not really. She was born to be mine” “You used to think we were supposed to be together” Bella told him “That was different. We now know why that was, why we had to go through that…it was because Ness was meant to be mine” “MY DAUGHTER IS NOT A POSSESSION JACOB” Edward shouted at him as he stepped outside, Bella jumping down to land beside him “You approve of them?” “Yes we do. In fact, I gave Demetri our blessing to marry Ness when he came here to ask me” Edward replied smiling, pleased Jake was no longer to be a part of his family “WHY?” Jake shouted at him “Demetri makes her happy and that is all I care about…” “I could have made her happy, if she’d given me a chance” “Ness’ feelings for you never developed romantically and from what I remember from our conversation about imprinting, the imprintee, decides on the nature of the relationship with the Imprinter, whether it be a brother, a friend or a lover. And in this case your imprint has decided that all she wanted from you was friendship; something you haven’t honoured or respected Jake” Bella explained and Edward didn’t bother to hide his grin as he added “And even that has been taken off the table when you refused to respect her and her choice” Jake snarled at them before speaking again “AND I SUPPPOSE THAT BLOODSUCKER DOES?” “HIS NAME IS DEMETRI! AND YES, HE DOES RESPECT HER!” Bella shouted back.  Jake growled loudly at them in response.

“ENOUGH!!” Carlisle shouted as he stepped outside “You need to leave NOW!” Jacob snarled at him “If you can’t be happy for her, don’t bother coming to the wedding” Bella added before turning to walk back inside, Edward and Carlisle following her.

Meanwhile, back in Volterra Demetri and Ness were talking about honeymoon destinations “Your dad mentioned we can stay on Isle Esme if we’d like during our honeymoon” Demetri told Ness as he held in his arms, her back against his chest “I don’t really want to honeymoon where I was conceived…” Demetri chuckled “Good point” “…I was thinking we could honeymoon in Greece. I’d like to see where you grew up and I know that Greece has changed a lot over the last 1000 years but it’s still your home country” Ness said looking at him over her shoulder, Demetri felt venomous tears building in his eyes “I’d be honoured to show you where I grew up, even though it has changed a lot over the years” He bent his head down and kissed her softly.

Alec and Y/N couldn’t decide where to honeymoon “I have an idea” Ness said smiling “Do tell” Alec replied “My grandparents offered us their house on Isle Esme but we’re going to Greece instead so…why don’t you two go instead. You’ll have an island to yourselves so no risk of exposure but you’ll have to go to the mainland to hunt” Ness replied “Really? Like oh my god. That would be amazing” Y/N said, standing and running to hug her friend “Thank you Ness” Alec added and gave her a hug too.

The Kings gave Alec and Demetri leave so they could travel to Forks with their mates and finalise their wedding plans before the other members of the Volturi arrived for the wedding.

Esme baked two medium sized two-tier wedding cakes as asked by Y/N and Renesmee whilst the rest of the family were helping to organise and set up everything for the outdoors wedding. Jasper, Emmett, Carlisle and Rosalie carried the log benches to the back of the house and positioned them either side of the aisle as instructed by Alice. ‘Déjà vu’ Rosalie thought to herself as she carried the bench. 

The day of the wedding arrived and Ness was a little nervous “You’ll be fine hunny” Bella said softly as she and Rosalie helped Ness get ready, Ness nodded before replying low “It’s just I’m not sure if I’d be a good wife” “Oh Ness, you’ll be a great wife and even if you’re not, it’s not like Demetri can trade you in for someone else…I mean you’re mates” Rosalie said smiling and Bella chuckled lightly “Mum, Rose that’s not funny” Ness said with a slight whine to her voice just for effect. Ness took a deep breath before leaving her aunt’s room and made her way downstairs to Edward who was waiting for her.

Demetri stood at the end of the aisle with Alec and their Best Men Felix and Santiago. Marcus was standing with them as he was officiating the ceremony. Aro, Sulpicia, Caius and Athenodora sat in the front row on the grooms’ side with the other members of the Volturi filling the other rows on that side whilst Bella and Y/N parents sat in the front row on the Bride’s side, a chair was left empty beside Bella for Edward. The remaining Cullens and the packs filled the other rows on the Bride’s side.

Jane, Heidi and Corin were wearing lilac bridesmaid dresses and once at the end of the aisle they stood off to the side to watch Edward and Y/N’s father walk the girls down the aisle. Y/N walked down the aisle first in an ivory ballgown style dress with a silver tiara in her hair. Alec stood there looking at her smiling and admiring his beautiful mate. He took her hand gently from her father and placed a kiss to the back of her hand.

Ness walked the aisle towards Demetri in a peach mermaid style dress with a rose gold tiara in her hair. Demetri’s undead breath was taken away by his bride-to-be and he couldn’t fight the wide grin that crossed his face as she came to closer to him. “You look beautiful darling” He kissed her cheek and smiled at her.

Marcus welcomed the guests, making a point of letting everyone know that the Volturi, the Cullens and the packs were now one big happy family, a family that will protect one another forever.

Alec, Y/N, Demetri and Ness wrote their own vows, each one promising to love, support and protect the other for eternity.

“Y/N I promise to support you in all that you do from now until the end of time. You are everything to me and I will love and protect you forever” Alec said as he looked into her eyes and placed her wedding ring upon her finger. “Alec I promise to love and protect you forever as you are not just my mate, you are my best friend and I couldn’t imagine sharing this life with anyone else. I love you” Y/N replied and slid his wedding ring onto his finger.

“Demetri, if someone had told me years ago that I’d be mated to you once I was grown up, I would never have believed them, but when I met you a few years ago I knew that I had found the man I would spend the rest of my life with. You are my best friend and I love you so much and I promise to support you and protect you forever” Ness slipped his wedding ring onto his finger, smiling up at him “Ness, I’d been on my own for a very long time before I met you and I count myself very lucky to be able to call you mine…you are my best friend, my lover and my mate and I promise that I will always love and protect you and I am looking forward to spending an eternity with you” Demetri replied and pressed a kiss to the back of her hand after placing her wedding ring onto her finger.

During the speeches both male vampires thanked their bride’s families for bringing their beautiful and wonderful brides into the world. Edward’s speech both shocked and amused Ness “I am proud of the woman that my daughter has grown up to be and I know that I can rest a little easier now, knowing she has found her soulmate and I know that my new son-in-law Demetri will look after her, for he treasures her the same way I treasure my wife, Bella. I truly wish them a long and happy life together” Demetri nodded and smiled at Edward before placing a lingering kiss to Ness’ cheek “I love you” He whispered into her ear and she turned her head a little and pressed her lips to his before replying “I love you too.”

Demetri and Alec enjoyed showing off their beautiful brides to their guests before having their first dance and posing with their guests for photographs. Demetri looked smug as shit knowing he had finally married the woman he loved and that she wore his mark as he wore hers.

Jacob noticed the matching bite marks and was seething. “HE MARKED HER! MARKED HER AS HIS!! HE HAD NO RIGHT!!” Jake roared, gaining everyone’s attention “Jake…” Sam said and Jake ignored him “DON’T START SOMETHING WE HAVE TO FINISH” Sam used his alpha voice and Jake growled at him. “He knows that she has MARKED him as HERS in return, right?” Embry asked turning to Leah “If he didn’t, he does now” She replied as she eyed Jake and he snarled “WHAT? SHE MARKED HIM?!” “Yes, yes I did and I’d do it again. HE’S MINE!“ Ness shouted back and another growl left Jake. “I’m proud to call Demetri my mate because he loves me for me. He doesn’t treat me like a possession” She looked up at Demetri and a smug smile played at her lips as she continued “I was born to be with him as he was created to be with me and I wear his mark with pride. I love him more than anything in the world” Demetri felt proud of her for standing up to Jake, because although she had done so before, this was different because she had never told Jake that she loved Demetri before. In fact, she had refused to discuss details about her life with Jake in the past but enough was enough “Jake, you’re ruining today for us. If you can’t be happy for her…for us, then please leave” Demetri said calmly “NO!” Jake shouted back and lunged for Demetri but Edward pushed him backwards, knocking him off balance a little. Jake tried again and this time Felix and Santiago caught him before he could get close enough to Demetri to hurt him, not that Demetri was worried about himself as he was too busy trying to ensure Ness was safe and out of Jake’s reach. Emmett and Jasper quickly moved her out of harm’s way giving Demetri time and space to prepare to defend himself should Jake get close enough to him.

Esme, Rosalie, Y/N and Heidi had gone inside with Ness to keep her company and to keep her safe. Jake tried again to get to Demetri, only this time he started to shift. Caius grabbed Jake by the throat before he could complete the shift. “YOU DARE TRY AND ATTACK OUR FAMILY AND ON THEIR WEDDING DAY?!” Caius shouted but Jake didn’t answer him, he just snarled back. “Jake. Calm down” Sam said firmly and watched as Jake ignored him and continued to growl and snarl at Caius. Edward and Alec moved to stand by Demetri, all of whom had a taken a defensive stance.

Caius let go of Jake’s neck and he fell to the floor, Jake got onto his feet and growled, glaring at Demetri “She was meant to be mine!” It was Demetri’s turn to growl “My wife is not a possession and she was never yours!” Jake growled louder made a run for Demetri only to be surrounded by Alec’s mist, Jake’s sight and sound being stripped from him. “WHAT THE…GIVE ME BACK MY SENSES!” He shouted but Alec ignored him. “Demetri go inside please, be with Ness” Edward said and started to usher him towards the house “I’ll deal with him” Edward added and Demetri nodded before heading towards the house.

Alec gave Jake back his senses just as Felix lifted him off the ground by his neck “I’m going inside to be with my bride” Alec turned and walked towards the house. “Wh-where’s th-the co-coward?” Jake stuttered “Demetri is no coward, he just isn’t going to fight on his wedding day and besides…you’re not worth his time” Felix replied smirking. Jake let out a strangled howl and glared at Felix and Edward “I w-won’t gi-give up” “Then you leave us no choice” Felix said and looked at Caius, who nodded. Felix snapped Jake’s neck before letting his body fall to the floor.

Edward turned to Billy “I’m so sorry Billy” Billy nodded as tears fell down his cheeks “I know it had to be done but he was still my son” Billy turned to face Carlisle “I’m going home but…can you…” “Leave it with me Billy” Carlisle replied with a small nod.

Once the drama with Jake was over the wedding reception resumed, everyone celebrating and dancing the night away. “I’m glad we’re going to be able to live our lives without him being around” Ness said softly “I know darling, it’s just a shame he couldn’t let go” Demetri replied low before leaning down and capturing her lips with his “I love you Dem” “I love you too.”

The following morning both couples got ready and departed for their honeymoons; Alec and Y/N going to Isle Esme and Demetri and Ness going to Greece.

Demetri enjoyed showing Ness where he grew up even though the area had changed drastically since he was human “I can’t believe you grew up when there was no electricity or running water and in a time when only boys were educated. Not to mention the fashion back then” “Yes, things were very different back then and I’ve seen so many changes over the last millennia but Greece will always hold a special place in my heart as this was my childhood home” Demetri’s eyes became glossy with venom “Aww is my ancient husband getting all soft on me” Her tone light and teasing “Be nice Ness, I’m very old” “You’re not old my love, you’re ancient” She kissed him soundly before giggling and winking at him “Looks like I’ll have to teach you how to respect your elders darling” He said low in her ear, his eyes darkening a little “I look forward to it Dem” She replied smiling and gave him a playful wink before walking off to explore more of his childhood village, although it was more of a city now.

Later that night they watched the sunset from the top of the Parthenon “Wow the view is amazing, you can see so much of Greece from up here” She leant back against his chest, he breathed in her scent before replying “Why do you think I bought you up here to watch the sunset?” She shrugged a little “It’s one of my favourite places to visit when I come to Greece” He tightened his hold on her, holding her closer to him. “I know I tease you sometimes about your age but I love that you have so much knowledge and experience and that you’re willing to share that with me” She turned her head a little and pressed her lips to his “Sharing is caring…as you young ones say” She chuckled at him “I love you Dem” “And I love you too” He kissed her temple and smiled, content with sharing this moment with his wife.

Meanwhile on Isle Esme Alec and Y/N were making the most of having an entire island to themselves. They laid out in the sun during the day watching as their skin sparkled under the sun’s rays. Night-time swims in the ocean often led to sex, then they would go back inside the house for a few more rounds.

Y/N was so excited when she and Alec discovered the waterfall and the secluded ‘pool’ beneath “Oh Alec, it’s beautiful” “Not as beautiful as you sweetheart” He kissed her temple before interlocking his fingers with hers, a moment later they jumped off the edge and into the water below. “I’m so glad I lost my shoe at the dance that night as it led to my happy ending with you” She kissed him passionately, love and adoration clearly shown in her eyes “I’m was so happy when you agreed to spend forever with me but I was ecstatic when you agreed to be my wife” He replied, holding her body tightly against his and gave her a loving kiss. “I love you Y/N” “I love you too Alec.”

Everything Wrong With Twilight: Forever Dawn

When writing, one of the most important things that a person must do is plan out what is going to happen. Of course, for many writers, these plans are sometimes forced to change. 

For instance, in Harry Potter, Rowling originally had the entire ending chapter written out, so that she knew where the seven books were going to be heading. However, somewhere around between the fourth and fifth books, Rowling realized that she’d written an epic plot hole, which caused much of the fifth book to be writing around it, and during the final books, everything had to change from plans.

Gravity Falls originally had the Cipher wheel as nothing more than a sort of decorative thing, but when Alex Hirsh saw the work, effort, and thought that people were going to in order to decode the thing, he eventually integrated it into the finale, even if it didn’t change anything in the end.

Lord of the Rings went through so many changes that the original plot ideas are almost unrecognizable. It’s one of the reasons that when people say that Jackson was building off of some notes on the Hobbit that Tolkien had been writing out for a rewrite, it doesn’t necessarily mean that they would have found their way into the rewrite, if there ever was one.

Plans change. That’s something that all writers have to understand. When you force a story to follow your original vision, you have major, major, problems.

And that was something that Meyer ended up doing.

Forever Dawn and its legacy 

Background

I’ve mentioned this a few times, but for those who don’t want to go back and go over everything I’ve written, Forever Dawn was the original book long epilogue for Twilight. The story was much like Breaking Dawn, almost spookily so. The differences were things like Laurence staying ‘good’ and helping Cullens, the werewolves playing next to no real part other that minor cutouts, and Victoria being the one who ran off on the Volturi to squeal on the Cullens for having eating a baby and making a vampire kid

There was an imprint, however some things, such as the love triangle, weren’t there.

This was something that Meyer had written intending on writing it only for herself, but then, as she started making money, and things started going well, she decided to keep going.

And so New Moon was born, and after it Eclipse. Now, both of these, while boring, do act like sequels. They advance the story and characterization. Kind of. You got more on the minor characters and the werewolves that Meyer had planned from the start but didn’t admit to, were also fleshed out. You got more on the world, such as the Volturi, and the fact that Meyer was making her newborn vampires the most dangerous.

She gave us more tension, relatively speaking, in the relationship between Bella and Edward, first with his going off to sulk and later when there was the run around with Bella not wanting to get married (but wanting to be a vampire).

The characterization of other characters was even advanced. Rosalie went from a thin Scary Sue who had been ‘created’ for Edward and rejected into one of the most tragic characters in the entire series, and Leah, who ironically is the only character with a real character arc, was also introduced as a means to show the reader the all consuming nature of imprinting (it’s romantic, honest).

Now, it wasn’t good. It wasn’t good by a long shot, and I’ve spent a lot of time talking about why it wasn’t good, but it was fulfilling the basic needs of storytelling to build off of itself and lead the reader in the general direction of the plot.

Then came Breaking Dawn.

Epilogue

Meyer had Forever Dawn on her computer from the start of the series. Now, in some ways, planning backward is a good thing. A lot of authors usually plot out both the beginning and the end of the book, or even a series, so that you can tell where things are going to go from there. It can really help you to better know where you’re going and what you’re doing, and for someone like Meyer, who tends to just sort of go and not worry too much about where her story goes, it probably is the reason she had a coherent story to begin with.

It’s important to understand that Forever Dawn was an epilogue. It was just a sort of ending to tell you what happens after the main story ended. There wasn’t a real firm plot to Forever Dawn because, regardless of it being well over the size of a normal book, it was still an epilogue. It was meant to tell what happened to the characters after the main story. It’s not an actual story, and in many ways, that’s part of the thing’s problem.

The plot, such as it was, was little more than saying that after the main story of Twilight, Bella and Edward quickly got married, Bella get pregnant, Jacob imprinted, the Volturi got involved but were convinced not to do anything, and everyone lived happily ever after.

There was no resolution to the thing involving the Volturi because there didn’t need to be. The main story was done. You don’t introduce and resolve major conflict in your epilogue. The story was told, this was just the shameless fantasy that Meyer wanted to have about how perfect life would be if she had managed to bag a vampire. In many ways, the greatest problem with Forever Dawn is perfectly simple: it was completely wish fulfillment.

Meyer, being Meyer, never really realized, or maybe never cared, that since she, in her own words, realized that she wasn’t ready to stop telling the story of Edward and Bella, that she was going to need to change things around.

The Problem

What ended up happening was that rather than using Forever Dawn as a sort of basic idea of what was going to happen, she forced the series into Forever Dawn. And it showed. While I have major issues with Eclipse, both it and New Moon at least attempted to drive the story and characterization forwards. The characters did move on from their first incarnations as well, but the strange thing is that once Breaking Dawn hits, everything is back to book one. You could actually cut out the second two books, and very little would have been lost. While the Volturi were established, the hints of Jane’s own secret agenda that would be resolved in the final book never came up again, the characterization, such as it was, of the Cullens also essentially was forced back into book one. And kind of characterization of the human characters was completely gone.

Everything had to happen like in Forever Dawn. And that made a lot of weirdness.

For instance, any actual threat that the Volturi were to anyone who wasn’t Bella and the Cullens was forgotten because in the original epilogue, they’d only been here as a threat to Edward and Bella. There were ineffective villains because they couldn’t be anything but ineffective villains. They were meant to be, essentially, another James, a random bad guy who showed up at the end, and rather than Edward saving her, she saved him and everyone else.

They were there to show Bella’s final, amazing transformation into a vampire. She was superman, just like she’d said in the first book. Meyer was showing a reversal of Edward and Bella. It’s one of the reasons that she really wasn’t interested in a fight. It wasn’t necessary. The whole thing had been there for Bella, and no other reason.

The werewolves are the characters where Meyer’s forcing everything into the mold of Forever Dawn shows the most. Jacob of the other Quileutes were basically nobodies in the first book. Jacob existed to spout some exposition and return to non-existence. Later, when Meyer realized that the werewolves were necessary for her ‘clever’ ending, Jacob imprinted on Bella’s kid, and since the pack wouldn’t hurt an imprint or their family, they had to help.

However, by the time that the actual series is written, Meyer’s werewolves are actually a second set of characters. Issues such as Leah’s problems with imprinting, and Sam’s leadership are introduced, and Bella is actually developed slightly. Maybe not well, but Bella in Eclipse is not the same person as Bella in Twilight.

It’s only natural. Characters change, and that’s a good thing.

Then, Meyer reached the final book, and she already had a plan. Oh, she knew that she was going to have to change things, but she had her plan and she was going to stick to it. The problem was, much like her very premise, Meyer tried to force the other two books into her original vision, not really worrying if Forever Dawn had been nothing more than an epilogue.

The other two books had become nothing more than fluff. They only had two reasons that they even existed anymore. One, so that Meyer could keep writing about them, and to make some loose ends and resolve them before the actual end, all characterization, other potential plot threads, and everything else was forgotten, so that Meyer’s original vision could come true.

The Effect

In the past, Meyer’s wish-fulfillment had worked out just fine. Her fans had rallied behind her. In reality, she had no reason to think that this wouldn’t be more of the same. And it shows. All of her interviews right before the book comes out are her usual, bubbly, ‘lol I’m so crazy’ stuff that you usually see from writers.

The problem was that Meyer’s lack of understanding of her audience and the fact that she was trying to force the story into the original vision was a bad combination. One that essentially broke down her entire writing career.

What Meyer didn’t understand was that the fans weren’t there for Bella. Most of them didn’t even like her all that much. They were there for Edward, or they were there for Jacob. Edward became little more than a footnote in Bella’s perfect life, and Jacob feel in life with a newborn baby. Neither team was thrilled by this.

Breaking Dawn broke the fandom. There’s no other way to say this. Twilight’s fandom was powering on happily, completely ignoring its critics until this book came out. I’m not sure how many people remember this, but it was glorious. There were youtube videos of angry fans burning the books, some girl finally saying rather than burning the books, they should return them.

But, what was most important was the posts on posts of fans saying that this book ‘didn’t feel like their characters’. They were right. It wasn’t. Now, I’m not going to pretend that I like Meyer’s characters. I don’t. I think almost all of them are two dimensional cutouts, but at the same time, the fans were completely right. Those characters were different. They had suddenly been yanked back to how they’d been in the first book, and for some characters, that was pretty flat.

For characters like the werewolves, who’d had no personality, they faded away more and more after Jacob imprinted on Renesmee. We’re told what happens, but they’re not really important anymore. They were just background in the original and they are that now.

The Cullens and Bella even mostly dropped what character development that they’d had, and were right back to the way they were.

In most respects, it was as if the former two books hadn’t really happened, and, yes, the fans noticed. And that, as well as Meyer’s own reaction, essentially ended Meyer’s career.

This was the book where Meyer’s original mistake, that of focusing her entire book on only one real vision, really bit her, and probably the only one. The reason was simple: while people were perfectly happy to have Meyer’s wish fulfillment mesh with their wish fulfillment, Breaking Dawn mostly ended up erasing Meyer’s own characterization and continuity in the name of remaining true to her own vision.

Fixing It

Let your story grow. Things change, things grow, you grow. Sometimes the story that you started out telling isn’t the story that you end up telling. You’ve changed, and that’s a good thing.

Meyer needed to let her story grow too.

Twilight and Forever Dawn were stories that were written at a specific time, and with a specific mindset, but in a series where two more books had been written, a lot needed to be changed. As hard as it is, sometimes, things move past the visions you originally had for them. Characters change, the plot alters. Even things that authors loved aren’t necessarily things that you can put into a final draft. That is one of the places that the phrase “kill your darlings” comes from.

Meyer had created two more books, and with those books, characters had changed, subplots had formed, and the expectations of the audience had altered.

Maybe they would have been ok with Breaking Dawn if that book had been right after Twilight. Maybe. But as it was, Meyer tried to force her series back into its original vision, and unlike before, when her obsession with her dream was ignored by readers, who were projecting bits of themselves and their ideas of themselves unto the characters, this was something that no one could make better.

As it was, Meyer, and all writers who find that their original vision is becoming less and less like something that is possible, that’s ok. You change, stories change, and one part of writing is, unfortunately moving past the first ideas that come to you. Often first ideas aren’t very good. Fault in Our Stars might be pretentious clap trap in my opinion but Green at least had the understanding that the ending where Hazel and the Crabby Dutchman band together and kill a drug lord for…reasons without repercussions in memory of Augustus was stupid. There are several writers who ended up changing an ending that they liked better because they knew that the revised one suited the story better.

It’s hard to revise, and it’s hard to let the story grow past that idealistic first stage, but it’s something that needs to be done.

Final Thoughts

Meyer took her initial vision very seriously, and in the end, while she managed to avoid it for longer than I thought possible, she eventually suffered for it. The reason was a combination of the fan’s own expectations, Meyer’s refusal to allow her story to grow beyond her original vision, a lack of understanding of what her fan base even wanted, and a story that was formatted like an epilogue, with little lasting conflict (be it Bella actually struggling or even the main confrontation at the end), too much happening in the background, and a sudden jerk of character development backwards.

In some regards, it’s a little sad to watch the very thing that Meyer thought was so important to her books, staying true to her original vision, end up as the thing that essentially destroyed her own work.

However, she claimed that she loved her characters, and regardless of saying that this was their true personalities, she should have considered if they’d really do the same things after the plot had happened. Would Bella, who didn’t really like the idea of marriage because it was too big of a step for her, (regardless of becoming immortal, but whatever) really suddenly want to have a child at eighteen? Would she really be willing to potentially die for that child? That answer should have been no.

If Meyer wants to really come back from the problems of the Twilight Saga, what she needs is not to write a gender bender, but to consider if her original vision really is something that CAN be published well and move from there. It will take time, it will take humility, and it does take sacrifice, but, at least as I see it, forcing a story to do something that makes no sense is worse.
