Clueless Guide: Alarak (HotS)

So, you’re new to heroes of the storm and you see Alarak on sale. Hey, isn’t he supposed to be good or something? You pick him up, take him into a match and promptly get your face beat in. What happened?

Welcome to Clueless Guides: guides I write for people who have no idea what they’re doing. This isn’t a pro strategy guide. This isn’t an expert guide. This is a basic guide to get you rolling and begin to understand the character and its playstyle. My credentials? I’ve hit level 5 with Alarak. I’m not a pro by any means, but by now I have a good idea of how he ticks.

Alarak is an assassin, that is, his job is to kill stuff. Specifically enemy heroes. He’s tricky to pick up, very combo-focused, but with the right setup and reactions you can utterly mulch enemy heroes in a quite humorous fashion. However, this is a situation where practice is needed: Alarak is pretty fragile, so if you do things wrong you’ll die pretty fast.

Powers

Your trait will impact your play style greatly. It’s called Sadism and it’s very simple: you do double damage to heroes with your abilities.

If that doesn’t clear up Alarak’s job, I don’t know what will. Alarak wants to kill heroes. He wants to murder them to death. He wants to keep half the enemy team on respawn timers. He wants to secure map objectives by killing all enemies that come to claim them. He wants to push a lane by way of keeping the heroes who come to push back in the hospital. If your team is running behind in levels, make up the difference by killing more heroes.

Raynor? Pull him to you and much him. Hammer? Just can’t run away. Morales? Kill the medic first, you know. Uther? Let’s see how far that armor goes. Artanis? Ooh, a challenge. Abathur? JACKPOT. Alarak is all about killing enemy heroes.

Okay, maybe not before level 10. Before level 10 heroes aren’t worth as much exp as minions are, so don’t sweat too much about the literal kill, but you can still beat them into submission and chase them off with their tail between their legs.

What’s more, Sadism has some interesting interactions: every time you score a takedown, you get 3% more sadism, up to 30%. So by killing heroes you get better at killing heroes. It’s lost on death, but in my experience it’s not that much of an added penalty. However, some talents give better bonuses at the cost of reducing your Sadism amount. Don’t be too scared of these, most of them are worth it.

However, it should be noted that without the Sadism bonus Alarak’s abilities don’t do as much damage as most assassins’. As a result, Alarak is not going to be near as helpful for pushing lanes or taking out camps as other Assassins. He’ll just have to manage by killing more heroes. Ho hum.

His first ability is Discord Strike. It’s a skill ‘shot’ but it’s similar a long melee attack with an AoE. Enemies in the area take damage and are silenced for a short time, keeping them from using abilities. Note that this does not stop passive abilities, meaning that auto-attack assassins like Raynor or Zul’jin will care much less, but unlike Blind (which effectively disables basic attacks) there’s no hero which simply does not care about it. Even Raynor (who requires the least ability casting of any hero in the game) won’t be able to use some of his kit.

Discord strike does have an odd wind-up time that takes some getting used to, but it’s manageable. It’s a really good way to open a fight, especially combo’d with telekinesis.

Telekinesis is a fun utility ability. It does little damage, but that’s not the point. The point is that it lets you move anything that isn’t nailed down or a giant monster. You can push anything in reach any direction, just click and drag. Yes, the click and drag mechanic takes some getting used to, but it’s quite manageable once you figure it out. You will most commonly pull enemies into Discord Strike range, but you can also use it to move allies or yourself. Note that moving yourself is your only escape option: this is Alarak’s only mobility ability and as a result you need to be aware of when you activate it and when it comes off of cooldown.

In addition, since it does move literally any hero, minion, or non-boss mercenary, it’s really easy to accidentally scoot yourself into a bad situation or out of good placement. Practice is key, it takes a bit to get used to the distance and the width of the power, but once you do it’s well worth it.

Alarak’s third ability is Lightning Surge, a tricky ability that’s deceptively easy to use once you get the hang of it. you click a target, and that target gets zapped by lightning. However, the enemies between you and it will take the most damage. As a result, using it against a hero is a matter of picking something behind the hero to tether the lightning to, getting the hero hit with the middle damage. It’s surprisingly easy, the hit box is really forgiving, but it takes some getting used to. Now, there will be times where you simply don’t have that anchor point and you need to zap that hero directly, but you take what you can get.

In addition, every hero hit with lightning surge heals you some, but it’s not a lot. I wouldn’t bank on it for healing, especially since you can’t get it except in a fight with a hero, but it’s nice on occasion.

Deadly Charge is Alarak’s first heroic ability. You choose a direction and he charges up, showing you how far he’ll go. You just click again to charge the shown distance, or move to cancel at no penalty. It’s a good, fast mobility tool made for starting combats, and it’s very effective if the enemy is bunched together and not expecting a murderer to barrel into them. However, the fact that you stay immobile while charging and any damage interrupts the ability means that it’s not useful for escaping the enemy.

Counter Strike is Alarak’s other heroic ability. You activate it and Alarak freezes on the spot, ignoring all damage for one second. If a hero tries to damage you in that second, you release a huge shockwave of murder. Yes, it’s as cool as it sounds. It’s tricky to know when to use it, it ONLY activates from hero damage, but when used correctly it’s very effective.

What’s more, Alarak’s heroic abilities have something special: you get one at tenth level, and if you want you can then get the other at 20th. The second heroic ability takes over the D key, and it opens up worlds of insane supermurder combos.

Easy Build:

This is the part of the guide where I give you some trait builds. This build here that I’m about to show you is NOT made to be great. It’s made to be easy: easy to pick up, easy to use, to help you learn the character. Active Traits and Quest Traits are going to be avoided as they’re kind of complex and can be confusing with a new character. Similarly, traits that make big changes to how an ability works are going to be avoided, since the idea is for you to get used to the core character. As a result, this build is not what you want to use for serious gaming with this character. 

However, by coincidence, it does result in a pretty flexible Alarak

Level 1: Sustaining Power

A bit of added healing from Lightning Surge is appreciated, but I still don’t recommend you bank on its healing power.

Level 4: Negatively Charged

You may wonder why I chose a quest trait here over the non-quest trait. That’s because this Quest trait is far easier to use and gives more up-front: It increases the damage in the middle of Lightning Surge, and then when you hit heroes with the middle of Lightning Surge (which you should be doing anyway) you get even more damage. The non-quest talent gives you a little bit extra damage if you hit one hero with three abilities inside two seconds. It’s just complicated and the bonus damage isn’t worth the effort.

Level 7: Hindered Motion

Applied Force at this level is ALSO really good, but I like the slow placed on enemies. It makes Discord Strike easier to hit, and also opens up the enemy to punishment from your allies.

Level 10: Counter Strike

Actually, this one is up to player choice. If you prefer Deadly Charge, that’s fine, go for it. They’re both good abilities, I just prefer Counter Strike.

Level 13: Pure Malice

Increase sadism by 10% each time an ally dies, up to 40%. That was easy. It’s all lost when you die, sure, but if you have a team that has trouble with living this might be worth it.

Level 16: Mocking Strikes

Usually I don’t really take to talents that improve my power against enemies suffering from certain afflictions, but usually I’m not playing Alarak. Alarak has a AoE ability that inflicts silence by raw, the level 7 talent gives a slow to the ability you use to pull enemies into melee, there’s just not a lot of reason not to take it.

Level 20: Deadly Charge

I just love both of Alarak’s Heroics and want them both. Also, it’s less likely to mess you up than the two active talents at this level.

Darth Alarak Build:

Ha ha, yes, obvious joke is obvious, but really Alarak is so much more menacing and dangerous than most of the Sith in Star Wars I consider him an honorary Sith, no matter how obvious the joke is.

The actual build is just a quest-heavy maximum murder Alarak. As long as you use those abilities well, the quests should be completed soon enough.

Level 1: Extended Lightning

Reduce Sadism a smidge, and get a bonus from hitting heroes with the middle of Lightning Surge. You get the range increase fast, you eventually get a slow, and if you luck out and hit three heroes with one surge you get all the rewards up-front and get your Sadism deposit back. Cool.

Level 4: Chaos Reigns.

I bet you thought that I was going to choose Negatively Charged again, didn’t you? Actually, that’s not a bad choice and it’s common on Alarak Lightning builds. Getting progress on two quests per hero hit is nothing to scoff at, but I prefer giving Discord Strike some love given how much you’ll be using it. This one only gives you a bonus at 15 hits, but it also gives a bonus after hitting two heroes at once. And if you hit three? You get the full unlock immediately.

Level 7: Hindered Motion.

It’s just a really good slow! If you’re fine with the slow from Extended Lightning and want to go for Applied Force here, I sure won’t speak against you, but I like the Hindered Motion slow.

Level 10: Counter Strike

...most of the time. they’re both really good.

Level 13: Rite of Rak’shir

Basically, you mark a hero and hitting that hero with Discord Strike or killing them gives you bonus Sadism with no cap. This is more or less THE bigtime Alarak talent, you master Alarak, you more or less want this every game. I’m not a master Alarak, but even so a few marked kills can give you a immediately noticeable advantage. Just don’t mark D.va: it only counts if you KILL her, not just her Meka.

Level 16: Mocking Strikes

With added slow from Extended Lightning, this only becomes a better choice.

Level 20: Deadly Charge

I just love both his heroic abilities and if a game gets to 20th level I will take it happily. The way they’re drastically different, the utility they give, the ability to slide into combat with deadly charge and then just immediately clean up with Counter Strike is just too good!

That kind of combo ability is what makes Alarak scary: In the right situation you can just wade into the enemy team and kill them all. If you mis-judge that situation you are simply dead, yes, but when you pull it off?

That’s a thing of violent, violent beauty.

StarCraft II - Rak’Shir

Alarak has lost his mind. Perhaps it was due to a lack of purpose now that the Dark God was no more. Perhaps he simply could not take the relatively peaceful times as a warrior who lived for war. Artanis did not know the reason behind it.

All he knew was that the Highlord has kept demanding Rak’Shir from him with increasing aggression. The last thing the Hierarch needed however was a duel to the death, especially with a former ally who helped rescue their people and the entire sector. After a while, Alarak seemingly gave up the persuations and retreated.

That was when the assassination attempts started. Supplicants were smuggled onto Aiur, each with an increasingly more desperate attempt to kill Artanis. They were… very poorly thought out plans. It was just another ploy to persuade the Hierarch.

Eventually, Artanis had to cave in, after a suicide bomber got far too close and he actually lost body guards to the madman. Realizing that his people would be hurt if he didn’t answer, he finally took up Alarak’s demand, and one last time, they both returned to Slayn, to the Pit of Ascension.

Whatever Alarak’s plans were, they only worked in the beginning. Artanis did receive a terrible beating but his rage and the rage of his own people eventually mounted high enough to overcome the confused bloodthirst of the Tal’darim.

Rak’Shir ended well after sunset, with Artanis swiping Alarak into the pit in a final burst of desperate effort.

It was over.

Artanis had gained nothing. The Tal’darim would not follow one who was not the part of the Chain of Ascension. Ji’nara however, who was inexplicably left out of the fight, would know better and leave the Daelaam finally be. Maybe even guide her people back into its fold one day.

For now, however, Artanis needed some serious medical assistance… and a long, long rest.

Official-Alan-Dabiri and the 5 Stages of Grief

Okay, I’ve been doing some grieving for the esports side of Heroes of the Storm, and I’d like to kind of put my thoughts out here for my three human and three-hundred pornbot followers. I’m just going to step outside of what has been mockingly referred to as my “blizzard fursuit” and be real for a minute here. Hi, I’m Rob. I am a Heroes of the Storm player since alpha, and a Heroes of the Storm esports fan since before the custom game mode had been added, when maps were random and they had to be cast afterwards off of replays. The recent announcement of the cancellation of HGC and Heroes of the Dorm hit me - and the rest of the community - very hard. So I’m just going to touch on the stages of grief as they pertain to this event, and my feelings on the whole matter.

For those of you here for silly patch note commentary, fanart, and moba memes, I’ll put this behind a read more out of respect for your dashes.

Denial

I think Denial is the shortest stage we’re facing here. Denial came when there was no announcement of 2019 HGC for two months, and some of us shrugged it off. At Blizzcon, outward-facing Blizzard employees assured the fans, the casters, the players, and other esports-attached people that HGC would be back in 2019, and be as big or bigger. I’m not going to say that they lied, but their statements fed into the idea that this would be fine, and some people latched onto that in the wake of the expanding silence before it was finally broken.

To be in denial is a defense mechanism. It is denying that this is happening in order to numb our emotions and make it through the first wave of pain. Here, denial is the shortest stage because this is so believable. In the wake of so many questionable moves Activision-Blizzard has made lately, the severity and suddenness is a shock, not the event itself. This is really happening. Professional-level Heroes of the Storm is dead. And of course it is. After all, these are the numbskulls who made a mobile game the centerpiece of Blizzcon 2018, right?

Anger

I just want to preface this by noting that I, personally, never move past anger. I may struggle through it, but that anger never goes away. After the loss of my maternal grandfather to COPD over twenty years ago, the smell of cigarettes still enrages me. So please understand that when I say that I will never forgive Blizzard for this, I am not being melodramatic. I will be angry about this for a very long time.

Anger, however, needs to be appropriately directed and channeled. I’m upset at losing my weekend HGC fix. I’m upset that my amateur team no longer has a pro scene to watch together and work to emulate. And I’m very upset that Heroes of the Dorm is gone, since it was the catalyst that drew many of my friends into the game in the first place. This loss is the end of an era of entertainment. But that’s not the real crime here.

Hundreds of people - some of whom I admire and idolize - across the world are now unemployed. Very abruptly. Right before Christmas. Forty players, per region, are now out in the cold, along with any coaches and managers the team might employ. Add to that the casters, production staff, and analysts? Those people just got hosed. Some of those players dropped out of college to be here. Some of those players dropped out of college literally this fall in preparation for the 2019 season, after being picked up after the region’s playoffs, or fighting their way up in the Open Division and through the Crucible. There are people who have leases they’ve signed based on income that just got ripped away from them. Blizzard just brutally smacked down every one of them, tore away their jobs, and smashed their dreams.

And they did it in a blog post. That was how most of the players and casters learned about this. This wasn’t an event that was common knowledge, and the announcement just broke the NDA for them all. They have been living their lives up until literally the blog post, making plans dependent on HGC 2019. They found out they got fired by reading the news. And Blizzard selfishly kept this under their hats for this long to make sure that no players, sponsors, or other organizations got spooked before they were already locked in to Blizzard’s other esports. This was the worst way to do it. It’s unforgivable.

Bargaining

The bargaining stage is about seeking control over a terrible situation. It’s looking for how things should be when how they are is unacceptable. And for this announcement, there are a thousand different ways that would be preferable to this.

For one thing, I would love if this just weren’t happening. If only the HGC were just on a limited budget. If only the HGC was following a different, cheaper format. If only either HGC or Heroes of the Dorm were gone, and not both. For another, I would love if the call had been made six months ago. Cancel the crucible, make sure everyone has months of notice before the doors close to seek other work, or go back to school, or whatever. Literally any notice whatsoever would be preferable to this. Even if it’s just all in NDAs and the public doesn’t know, half of my anger is mitigated just because I know those folks aren’t entirely hosed.

Of course, the greatest bargain at all is to go all the way back. What if they’d designed the HGC better? The HGC was set up to ensure its own demise. The pros being paid salaries by Blizzard was great for their financial security, but those salaries elevated them above everyone else. The rest of the scene withered. Was Tempo Storm ever going to play against an open division team? No. Never. Maybe a scrim if they had connections, but nothing serious. In the days before HGC, those players had a really high chance of getting matched into the best pro team in round 1 just because of the seeding. Amateur tournaments are few and far between right now, and most of them go without casters, or have inexperienced casters who don’t have the platform to bring these games to a sizable audience. The part of the scene that still exists is now tiny to the point of invisibility. If HGC had been designed on a points system like it was for the first blizzcon, though? Those structures would still exist, instead of having been steamrolled over to build the now-derelict HGC parking lot. Scaling back Blizzard’s involvement with that system would have been a minimal change.

Depression

A lot of the community seems to be in this stage. A lot of people think this was a deathblow to the game itself, and, to be honest, it might be. The announcement was accompanied by the news that the development team is shrinking, and that content will be coming out slower, but with no indication of how slow. There is no shortage of doom and gloom, with people predicting no new hero for months - or even years - and balance patches being made by devs with no resources to test or monitor the results.

Ultimately, this is a downer. I’m not going to tell you it’s not bad. The lack of a pro scene to aspire to immediately kills the interest of a nontrivial number of players, who thought they could one day break into that world, whether as a player or as a caster. And the lack of those players kills the motivation of content creators, who are making build guides, tier lists, and learning-related content for those players. Make no mistake, this scene will shrink because of this. Your favorite pro players, streamers, youtubers, and other content creators might just move on, looking for other games to excel in, and take some amount of their audience with them.

Even if you weren’t part of this community, (why are you reading this, then?) Heroes of the Storm ranked 12th on the most influential esports of 2018. The loss of this is going to spook literally every sponsor across all esports, planting the seed of doubt that this is a worthwhile use of funds when it could all vanish overnight at the whim of the game’s publisher.

And even if you don’t care about esports, the professional level of the game had an effect that rippled down through all levels of play. Do you remember suddenly seeing Xul in your games a whole lot earlier this year? Do you remember Alarak suddenly being a contested pick in the last two months? Surely you noticed that the “solo lane” role suddenly became a thing last year when Blaze and Yrel were added, couldn’t main tank, but still had high win rates. All of that was the pro scene trickling down.

What happens now? What’s going to take the place of that influence? I don’t know. All I know is that when the playerbase looks up to see the highest level of play now, there’s just a void where HGC was.

Acceptance

Regardless of your feelings on the matter, though, Heroes of the Storm existed before HGC, and will continue to exist afterwards. It might end up being a much sparser community, with the pros moving on and the content creators in exodus, but we’ll still be here. I mean, I will, at least. They aren’t pulling the plug on the game, no matter what some angry nerd says about false hope. We’ve got years of gameplay and years of snarky patch notes ahead of us. Not to mention that all Blizzard content is HotS content. I’ve got Overwatch heroes to steal from Jeff, and Starcraft units to turn into poc, and lore-defying skins to slap on everyone in between. Heroes of the Storm is here to stay, and anyone who says otherwise is planning for a future calamity that’s still decades away.

That said, there are still high-level Heroes of the Storm tournaments happening. As I believe I mentioned previously, I have a team in Heroes Lounge, and that league has confirmed that they’re not stopping anytime soon. Similarly, the Nexus Gaming Series is gearing up, with sign-ups in January. In fact, there’s a number of options for community tournaments, both to participate in and to watch, with more undoubtedly coming, once the pros and casters finish their grieving and come together, looking to make it clear that they care about the game more than Blizzard does, and they’re willing to show it.

We all care more than blizzard does, or we wouldn’t be this upset. So let’s keep our eyes to the skies and give our support to whatever comes out of this. Because if the death of the pro scene would kill this game, it’s up to us to support a semi-pro scene ourselves to keep HotS alive.

Almost a good half of TF Prime/RiD Italian Voice Cast IS BACK (as well as some “guests” from Rescue Bots).

Re-confirmed the roles for Optimus, Bee, Windblade, Ratchet, Starscream (hello Alarak) and Wheeljack (hello Artanis/Heatwave!). I honestly don’t know who is the voice actor for Megatron this time, definitely NOT Tony Fuochi - his VA in TF Prime - nor the other one who voiced him in TF Animated. Tbh his voice on megs doesn’t convince me at all.

Also, Grimlock’s VA got changed and they “recycled” the VA for Jetfire inTF War for Cybertron/Unicron in TF Prime.

On the other hand, it seems that - at last! - after the disaster of the post-Unicron Trilogy era series...

WE. ACTUALLY. HAVE. A. GOOD. DIALOGUES. TRANSLATOR!

On the other hand..I don’t like the animation at all.

But at least we don’t have to suffer the atrocities commited in the previous series, audio-wise. ;u;

And we have a definitely more awesome VA for Optimus than ‘murica. Sorry-not-sorry folks.

StarCraft Fanfiction: “No Omen, No Country’s Cause”

A few months ago, during the StarCraft 20th anniversary celebration, I created a blog for the sole purpose of remedying a great injustice: according to an infographic I saw here on Tumblr, fanfiction involving my favorite character, Vice Adm. Alexei Stukov, comprised only 1% of StarCraft fanfiction (in English, I’m assuming). 

And so I embarked on a months-long odyssey, putting together what I thought would be a short story about how Stukov would react to the UED returning to the Koprulu sector. What it turned into is a multi-perspective, most likely novella- length text that I think would work well as a serial.

In “No Omen, No Country’s Cause,” I seek to reconcile discordant parts of Stukov’s personality, give him something to live for, flesh out his backstory, make him to engage in some badassery, and get him back to where he was in SC: Brood War (personality wise). Along the way, expect a lot of battles, new characters, and interactions with other canon characters like Adm. Matt Horner, Valerian Mengsk, Alarak, Zagara, and others.

This teaser is rated T, but expect some chapters to be M for language, violence, sexual content, and zergy squish-squish. I’ll probably post small bits once or twice a week, releasing what I’ve written so far and giving me a chance to write more. I do see myself finishing it (I’ve already written the ending but not the middle) unless there’s just zero interest.

TARSONIS CITY, TARSONIS: 09:55

"Five minutes to air time, people. Let's get moving!" Kate Lockwell paced behind Adm. Matthew Horner as he stood at his podium. From the side of the makeshift stage, she shouted at a few people in the wings. "Tim! Where's Kallie with the other camera?"

"The replacement lens didn't come in. Wasn't a 'priority' shipment and didn't make it through customs. She knows a guy uptown and she's going to borrow one. She'll be back in fifteen minutes."

"Fifteen?!"

"We'll start without her! It'll be fine. No one will notice we're down a camera."

"They'll notice if we're down two presidential debaters... Where're my challenger candidates?" Kim Lockwell stopped on her heel and put her hand on the shoulder of Horner's blue suit.

"Well, if there's one thing that I can say for you military types, at least you're punctual, Mr. President." She winked at him, and before he could respond, she was gone. 

Horner leaned over the podium and looked into the "audience." In the makeshift broadcast room, there were about two-dozen seats, all of which were full of journalists from around the sector-Umoja, Moria, and even some of the outlying colonies. All were there to see the beginning of Tarsonis's new government as it shifted from the Terran Dominion to the Terran Republic. After defeating Amon and negotiating peace with the zerg under Zagara, Valerian Mengsk had begun focusing on rebuilding Tarsonis and Korhal, and that's when the political shitstorm started. The Dominion needed the Umojan Protectorate's help, but they refused to acknowledge a "medieval monarchy spawned by a dictator" as a valid government even though it was constitutional. The Umojans also released more information about Valerian that was potentially damaging-that the labs run by Mobius Corp. had been more closely supervised by him than he had originally said. Skygeirr Station was the most egregious. Horner had asked him, man-to-man, what he actually knew. He had told him that he was only aware they were performing experiments on zerg and xel'naga tissues-he didn't know about the hybrid breeding program. But he did know about what they were doing to UED POW Vice Admiral Alexei Stukov. Valerian said that he willingly turned a blind eye to what they did to him because he thought it vital, at the time, to finding a way to neutralize Sara Kerrigan. Whether it was because he was UED or because he was infested and technically zerg, news reports focused on the hybrids and glossed over the torture of someone he knew to be a decent man. If it bothered Valerian, it was hard to see, which made Horner watchful of him now, waiting for more of his father to emerge. The Umojan Protectorate has a point, Horner thought.

Valerian was forced to step down, and his cabinet named Horner as his interim successor until the Terran Republic could build its infrastructure enough to hold an election. The Umojan Protectorate began helping Tarsonis pick up the pieces of the coup against Arcturus Mengsk and the invasion by the Queen of Blades. It had been five years, and Horner was just now thinking that he had the hang of governing-and now he would have to publicly debate other candidates and run for the position to keep it for another five years. Even so, Horner had doubts about his leadership capabilities. Raynor should be up here-not me, he thought. But he knew that would never have worked. Jim Raynor had not wanted to lead even when he was with the Raiders. Some are born great, some achieve greatness, and some have greatness thrust upon them, he thought, Valerian was the first, Raynor the second... But Valerian was disgraced and Raynor had vanished. Hopefully I'm the third... After Valerian stepped down and the smoke cleared, there weren't many other options.

Horner took a deep breath and thumbed again through his notes on the datapad in front of him. His main talking points were those of national security. They had been burned before by outside threats. Other than a few outlying factions, the protoss were their allies, but on the other hand, the zerg, even with Zagara leading them, could be fractured by a new leader-just as Abathur almost had done. Worse, if Horner had learned anything, it was the threat that could not be predicted that always ...bites you in the ass. Restructuring was also critical. The military needed its academies back online, and the education system-especially on Tarsonis-needed new buildings, updated materials, and staff that were not praising the "glory of the Dominion." Trade deals with the Kel-Morians and the Umojan Protectorate to bring food and other resources to people who needed it were his other sticking points. Things we can all agree on, not too detailed, and enough to talk about but not enough to make me look like a boring, stuffed uniform-I hope.

Finally, one of the other candidates entered the studio. The journalists all stood at once, their cameras flashing as she strode in. He recognized her; It was Dr. Joan Slavens, a philosophy professor at Tarsonis City Colonial University, the largest and most prestigious public universities on Tarsonis-before it was shut down by the Dominion. She had settled into being a nuisance via private broadcasts during the war. Horner had watched a few of them. Dr. Slavens was a good speaker, and she had the air of a rumpled intellectual with her barely-tamed blonde curls and wrinkled tweed jacket. She waved warmly to the journalists. This made him even more nervous. Dr. Slavens was a well-known personality and respected. She already had a following, and it would be easy for her to build a bloc of voters. He, on the other hand, had name recognition, and was known as a war hero on one hand but a compatriot of the now-controversial Valerian Mengsk on the other-his alliances could make someone's decision either way.

Dr. Slavens took her place at the podium next to his and adjusted her microphone, tapping on it to test it. She put her hand over it and turned to Horner, giving him a rueful smile.

"Of course, Mr. Marinakis isn't here yet. I hope his freighters are timelier than he is."

"You have some experience with Marcos Marinakis?"

"Unfortunately, yes. He told me he would let me interview him for my vids a half a dozen times... He was a no-show on half of them and more than an hour late on the rest. We could be here a while. I mean, this only a presidential debate, after all. I'm sure his business brunch was much more pressing."

"Well, if he's much later, we'll have to start without him."

Marcos Marinakis was a shipping magnate-one of the few that wasn't Kel-Morian. He had a reputation of being loud, obnoxious, but shrewd in business. Some people would believe that would make him good at guiding the Republic, but Horner didn't really see him as a threat. Because of his manner and what inevitably comes out about anyone who runs a large company, he was by far a long shot.

Horner's thoughts were interrupted by a low rumble far in the distance. It shook the building, and a little bit of plaster rained from the ceiling.

"What the hell was that?" Lockwell said. Horner's security detail, two marines in street combat gear, came in from outside the room.

"Mr. President, we have reports of an attack on the outskirts of town heading inward to our position. We need to get you all to a secure location."

"Where?" Horner said quickly.

"The basement of this building is a nuclear bunker. We should be able to hide out there."

Horner sprung into action.

"All right everyone, listen," Horner said into the microphone. "We're all going to do this quietly and without panicking. Please follow these gentlemen downstairs. Keep aware of your surroundings..."

There was another rumble and the power went out. Horner shouted over the din of fighting and the journalists talking nervously among themselves.

"And don't panic."

The journalists filed out of the room with Horner taking up the rear. He paused to look out the window. Republic troops had began flooding into the streets, and before them, a nydus canal had opened. The infested crawled from its maw, waves of them flooding over abandoned hovercars and the makeshift barriers troops had constructed along the way. In the distance, a siege tank and a platoon of Terran Republic troops began firing at them, but were overwhelmed by the sea of flesh and claws almost instantly. With dread, Horner realized there could be only one person responsible: Stukov.

And there's the threat we didn't anticipate.
