LoL - Skarner Is Right

"Oh man, I wonder if I'll draw other champions from this game later down the line"

<proceeds to have an idea that requires half the goddamn roster>

Famous last words, huh?

Real talk, delete that last sentence from the final paragraph of Skarner's bio:

"The only one Skarner can trust is himself, and he'll do anything it takes to protect Ixtal and its people. Even if that means becoming the root of their destruction, himself."

And his "destructive paranoia" immediately gets downgraded to "fully reasonable and healthy paranoia". I bet I haven't even pictured a fifth of all the insane bull-- going on outside of Ixtal, and half of the things on the pic would be enough for me to vote for eternal isolation, thanks.

This was a lot of fun to put together, even if it took a bit longer than I would have hoped. I ended up reading and/or listening to quite a few lore bits, all of which I really enjoyed... and my god, the story of Nasus and Renekton just nuked my heart. I want the god-warrior bros to make up and live happily ever after! I don't even care what happens to Azir and Shurima in the background, I want the brothers to get a happy ending, pls, Riot!!

Skarner sketches - 2024-04-03-06

Okay, so, uh... this is new?

I don't actually play LoL for a multitude of reasons, and I can't claim to have been very deeply ingrained in its lore before either. Sometimes one champion grabs my attention temporarily, like Tahm Kench (most accurate re-imagining ever of the Devil in folklores), Kindred (Death never had a more awesome interpretation), Braum (he is just an amazing guy) or the God of All Sass in the Universe, Aurelion Sol (Boop). But I have never created fanart of them, or started reading up on the lore even at a surface level.

Well, for some reason, the newly reworked Skarner has somehow gotten my attention on an entirely new level. No, I'm still not going to play League. I might check out Riot's non-PvP games, tho...

Turns out, I'm kinda sorta joining in when LoL's lore building is at its lowest, few new champions, no "color stories" anymore, and basically no other stories, which is... kind of heart-breaking, not gonna lie. Because I see the unified lore Riot is trying to build and it is genuinely impressive both in ambition and in actual execution. They can even work in redesigns and reworks into the story seamlessly at times. I hope they pick up steam again soon.

Skarner might have gotten my attention because of his design; because of his amazing similarity in appearance and in role to the best sea monster ever put to screen - Leviathan from Atlantis: The Lost Empire; because of his banger music; or because he has a lot in common with my Ra from my Egyptian mythology story idea where they both teeter on the brink between utter paranoia-fueled tyrannic rule and genuine protection of their people.

Whatever it may be, I like Skarner, the Primordial Sovereign. I am not sure how much LoL's story is allowed to progress, and champions to have arcs, but I hope against all hope that Skarner's story will involve one hell of a bi--slap from life that will get him back on the proper way to protect his people and not actually ruin them in his paranoia.

Maybe the Void will swallow Ixtal in a surprise attack, but Skarner manages to make it out with citizens on his back like Milio, and Qijana as the last Yun Tal and therefore de facto human leader of the Ixtali. The formerly isolationist nation is now forced into nomadic life atop Skarner as they seek a new home or allies to get back at the Void finally. I mean, Jax is looking for volunteers from what I have heard, and Skarner actually likes Jax and Icathia. Now... wouldn't that be a fanfic idea?

I hope I can deliver a few more sketchdumps, because I have ideas both for Skarner and for the brackern species as a whole.

Being the Sunbearer comes with a certain set of perks and skills, certainly. Even beyond the elevated body temperature and the almost complete immunity to both hot and cold...

Summoning Sol's avatar to the mortal realm may not be the easiest magic trick to pull off, but the resulting fountain of "have seen everything under the sun, quite literally" kind of wisdom is often worth the trouble. Of course Sol doesn't like to be bugged too often, so make sure you call on it when the situation truly needs some divine revelations. In most cases, you are the Sunbearer, figure it out!

Lightsabers? Oh no. We roll with light polearms in this house!

The Sunbearer has the power to make it rain! Searing spears of light, that is.

Building up power is a relatively slow process during conflict, but the Sunbearer could always consume a handy fire nearby to speed up the process, or to heal injuries. The limits are simply how many explosives the enemy has on hand, and the level of collateral damage the Sunbearer is willing to accept.

The Sunbearer's connection to light is intimate.., so seeing through light balls conjured up by him is only natural. Quite the useful scouting tool, although being sneaky about it is rather challenging.

Asking the light to curve around you and make you invisible has never been easier! The sounds you still make is another matter entirely, however...

It's not flying, but it's definitely falling with style! Yes, really, this technique is great for gliding and slowing your fall to a level where you can land rather softly, especially if you employ sturdy metallic arms as landing gears.

Every light-themed mage worth their salt must have an all-purpose DEATH LASER in their arsenal! Guaranteed to remove all reprehensible criminals! Along with the building behind them, and the other building behind that one.

Everything the light touches... the Sunbearer can conjure up as a holographic map, after a bit of setting up. Only works with Sol's light, and the zooming capabilities are rather limited. But still perfect for large scale operations or just planning out the most efficient shopping trip in the district.

Unfortunately, the downsides of this job aren't too far off, either...

Sol didn't quite anticipate all these problems with its new Champion. In ages past, it had been much easier - candidates were trained and taught before presenting themselves before Sol. Of course, a new Champion always needed time to adjust to the new life fully, but basic things like its language and writing were never an issue, and neither were the nature of its magic and its gifts.

But not this time. This Otto may have been a scholar, but he was clearly not a scholar of the supernatural, and as such, he usually had the most baffling reactions to any contact Sol was trying establish. So finally getting tired of this, Sol decided to start at the basics.

This was going to be a long partnership.

Also, the bistro guy clearly has seen some stuff in his life if he is this unbothered by Otto and his actuators. Maybe he saw him on the news during Doc Ock's rampage, so it's not that big of a shock anymore, who knows?

With Sol's power coursing through them, the four actuators has started doing something most unexpected - they started developing differing basic personalities. While their unity with each other and with Otto remains unscathed, especially in danger, in every day situations the four arms often react completely differently to a situation. All this prompted Otto to finally name them, and after much debate, he stumbled upon an Egyptian snake-goddess, Meretseger ("She Who Loves Silence"), who was a fierce protector of tombs and also deliverer of both punishment and mercy. Although Otto originally only chose this name because of the snake motif and the four syllables he could use for the individual arms, in the future he would quickly realize how well their heroic duties line up with the original role of the goddess.

Okay, so for one, I completely messed up the order of programs I have planned for the weekend instead of using the Friday afternoon to actually draw this ref sheet. For two, I somehow completely forgot that the actuators are indeed machines. And machines break my brain, completely.

After that HELL of a lesson in "plan ahead for the long weekend, dipsh--", I have decided to really drive the point home and put this bad boy out this goddamn Sunday, no matter how long it would take. (You just gotta kick your own ass sometimes to progress.)

There is no effing way in hell I will draw the actuators THIS detailed in most of my Doc Ock work, unless it is like a high-profile illustration or something. But it is a reference sheet, and I do need to put some actual effort into the designs here. Thankfully, the super detailed and articulate Doc Ock statue from TWO YEARS AGO finally arrived in January and my first order of the day was to photo the CRAP out of the movie-accurate actuators from every angle and pose I could possibly think of. That helped greatly. But machines are still machines. And I have zero idea why my brain just gives up on them.

Also, yes, I know, Alfred Molina had named the four arms during filming, which is just incredibly adorable, not gonna lie. But that was behind the scenes stuff, in universe the arms have no names. For the longest of times I was actually calling them Varunastra - a divine weapon from Hinduism that could change shape into whatever the bearer needed in the moment. Also four syllables, I really really loved this name... right until I realized after a bit more research that Varunastra is the weapon of a storm god and is actually made out of water or is an actual storm. Neither option fits a solar-themed hero well, now do they. So I hopped back onto the "name hunting" train until Meretseger finally came in to save the day!

I just wanted to share my first ever (thankfully beginner friendly) model kit because PRIMUS ABOVE AND UNICRON BELOW, THIS IS THE MOST BEAUTIFUL ARCEE DESIGN I HAVE EVER SEEN!

Feminine! Elegant! An absolute proper lady! I love everything about her. I knew I had to get her the very second I saw the box art, and my god, it does not disappoint. People who actually know what the hell they are doing could make insane action poses with this figure! Sure, she can't transform, but I couldn't give any less of a shit about that next to this quality!

It was an insane amount of time to put together, however! You don't necessarily need glue (although some parts are pretty shaky, I'm gonna have to glue them there), but just the soooo many parts that makes this insane posing possible.

It was worth it, tho! This is how you design a feminine Transformer! THIS!

I also have Shockwave and Soundwave in their boxes, I might share them as well, once they are ready.

Frankly, I have been on a MASSIVE Transformers nostalgia train as of late, and while literally ALL the newer media I checked out (Rise of the Beasts, Cyberverse and Earthspark) have all been varying levels of bad or disappointing or both, that STILL has not been enough to put an end to the ride. Probably gonna go back to the old classics at this rate. I wanted so badly to draw my two favorite 'Cons, TEH Waves themselves, but machines break my brain. So how to vault over that problem?

I always had really stupid fantasy AU ideas for our favorite shapeshifting robots, and I finally caved in and had this veeery timid first try (I know this insane bull-- doesn't look like it, but believe me, it is). If the nostalgia train goes on longer, I might add more to this lineup, and I hope to practice "random fantasy designs relatively fast" first and foremost. Maybe even revisit Soundwave, give him a more mage-look next time around. We will see!

Also, fun fact: He Who Listens Attentively is the accurate translation of Soundwave's Hungarian name, Fülelő. Every site ever translates it as Listener, but that is not entirely true. The verb fülelni specifically means to listen attentively. So there you go, hope it was an entertaining little trivia! I will more than likely use this really cool, Egyptian deity-esque name in this fantasy insanity, IF there will be more!

MaIruma-kun - Misfit Familiars

I mean… they never said a human (or a demon) can only have one familiar. At least not in the anime, I don't recall.

A relatively quick practice round of cute characters (which I genuinely suck at) and quick design choices (because lord knows, I can just waste all the time in the world hesitating). How did they turn out? :D Would you buy any of them as plushies? I think I would go for Crocell and Clara myself. :D Maybe Garp too.

New Gallery Header for DeviantArt

But yeah, in preparation of moving my original stuff to a different DA gallery down the road, I wanted to create a header for my OG gallery that would remain for fanart (and the occasional original design that doesn't belong to any actual story). I eventually landed on this composition of various franchises and I'm actually really really happy with how this turned out!

Sure, some franchises might only have a couple of entries in my gallery, but I wanted to emphasize my widespreaded interests, and that this is indeed a fanart gallery, with some AU/headcanon/original design thrown in the mix occasionally.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to everyone! I wish you all a peaceful and wonderful end of the year!

It looked like Doc had already resigned himself to his fate to spend Christmas alone, when Peter found him in the small motel.

At the very least, he looked almost comically surprised when the young man invited him to his and MJ's Christmas Eve. Thankfully, MJ had been very welcoming to the idea, she even encouraged Peter to set out as soon as he could. Doc most certainly didn't know how to thank them for the invitation.

By that time, he was pretty alright with creating and maintaining small harmless balls of light, an already amazing feat considering where he started. He helped around the preparations, his actuators carefully snaking about not to knock over anything. While they decorated the tree with their very own style, Peter couldn't help but smile at how much Doc looked like a strange angel with all that magic and the Christmas light strings on the wall behind his back seemingly forming a vague wing-shape around him. Doc certainly didn't understand what he was chuckling about.

Peter hoped the sight was a good sign for the future.

Doc Ock Sketches #4 - Face Patterns

Granted, there were many many aspects of his life Otto Octavius could no longer claim to be normal in the slightest. But having light signal patterns connected to his mental state was just absurd.

But there is no helping it. He had accidentally merged with his cursed fusion reaction and now he had a constant glow just under his skin in certain parts of his body. Normally that light can only be seen in deep darkness. But experiencing just a bit of stronger emotion will absolutely make his cheeks or eyes flash up in an unmistakable pattern. Peter of course quickly started calling the phenomenon "The Solar DoCode" and Otto so far was unable to make him drop that ridiculous name.

Conventional wisdom says to make peace with he was given by Nature... or in this case, Crazy Magic from Another World. But God, or Sol, or whoever help him, Otto is not happy with his lot.

Welp, not for International Men's Day, unfortunately, but better late than never! I still want to add more character design sheets to the series, including the hopefully final versions of his actuators and their name, as well as his fully body pattern based on whether he is focused or raging, and based on the level of charge he has built up. And of course maybe make his magic a bit more concrete. I'm very happy to have stumbled upon this universal symbol of squares layered on top of each other, but I do want to pour my ideas about his abilities into tangible form (instead of the vague bull- Marvel often pulls these days in their movies).

Hopefully after the Diablo fancomic I will be able to do so! Either way, please enjoy this next sketchdump of Solar Demigod Doc Ock! Been a damn long while, but I honestly love this AU so much. I hope you guys do too! ^^ If you ever want to use this design in your work, just let me know and give me credit!

The Last of the Three Faces - MNW Tripleface

Technically, there are only three rules you should follow:

Do not let him swipe at you. Do not let him grab you. Do not let him near you.

All of which are far easier said than done.

The third and final stage of Wackoman's Tripleface Protocol loses almost all resemblance to the harmless clown he normally is, and only a flimsy color-splattered rag tries (and fails) to hide the many dangers underneath. A design choice no doubt deemed "hilarious" by his creator. Wackoman grows further in size and his mastery over fire and water only increases, now capable of producing far more precise strikes compared to the chaotic Elemental Tower spamming of his Second Stage. His four long and powerful arms spring deadly spikes from their entire length, even a single swipe from them can lead to massive damage. His entire torso becomes one enormous maw with a bottomless instant-deleting void inside it that can spawn arms of its own, reaching out to roughly 3 meters in front of him.

Going melee against Wackoman Stage Three is a guaranteed death sentence. You either hope to whatever God is out there that you can pack a hard-enough punch with a Program Advance to force him to log out (or he might just facetank the hit at this point, knowing your luck), or you hope you are actually as good of a sniper as you think you are. But do not forget... Wackoman's head is still severed. That "neck" is not a neck, it's yet another one of those arms from the maw, and it might just be faster than your trigger finger. And better watch out for those fireballs or water jets coming your way.

Even worse news, his NetOp, Maddy simply might not be able to help you either. Created by her artist uncle as the representation of Coulrophobia, the fear of clowns, Wackoman is technically uncontrollable in this form, safe for a forced logging out. After all, fear is what he is made from and made for, and by this stage he fully accepts his destiny. What better way to achieve it than by providing the experience of staring death straight in the severed face? If you do not come to him willingly, he might take an arm or a leg first. And he may take another limb and another, or he may just hug you tightly before finally ending you, if you had managed to raise his ire.

Realistically, there is only one rule you should follow:

Flee for your life.

And with this, yet another shelved project idea is done for good. This year's been a good year, I'm telling you. Granted, I will try to do a character sheet for him so you can actually see his details if nothing gets in the way, but with this picture I consider the Tripleface Saga finished after all these years. From the very first comic page back in 2012, to the eventual revisit and revision of both the comic and the second stage design in 2020 and 2021, this has been one of the most persistent AU ideas I have ever had for a character (no, it's not headcanon, it's too wild and canon-breaking for that). But the third stage has eluded me for over two years, before I finally hunted it down and dragged it across the finish line.

I do hope you like the design and of course I am always open for feedback!

Six Years of That First Spark!

Tomorrow is the sixth birthday of That First Spark, and hoooly crap, I can barely believe it! This had been one hell of a ride so far, and it is still going! By far the largest, longest project I have ever stuck with, and I hope to bring all the experiences from this to my original works.

Thank you to everyone who gives this long saga a chance. I understand it can feel extremely daunting to look at the chapter count (Anu knows, I have felt the exact same way with  other fanfictions), but even if you read only a few chapters in, I am grateful for your time and attention. To those who stick with this story, I thank you for your patience and understanding with the irregular uploading schedule. Fitting together the bi-weekly uploads on DeviantArt and writing is not easy and I have yet to crack the code entirely. To those who even take the time and leave comments, you guys are the greatest treasure out there and don't let anyone ever tell you otherwise. Your kind words and interesting speculations are often the fuel on gray days when I all want to do is just play video games and not get anything done. I am grateful to all of you, and I hope I get to see you by this fanfic's side until the finish line. Yes, I know, it's crazy thought, but I am planning on finishing this epic one day with an Act IV worthy of the Diablo franchise!

And for one, very special friend who is honestly the most dedicated, disciplined person I have ever met on the internet and who has gifted me with her friendship, support and inspiration. I and this fanfic owe you one heck of a lot, and I am incredibly happy, lucky and grateful to have met you almost by random chance. I wish you the very best in your projects and in life.

(Honestly, the funniest thing I have realized while drawing this is that while in the story Quiet is not even a year old, the fanfic's actual age kinda lines up well with his appearance and brain age! Okay, maybe he is more like 7 at this point, but pretty close! The irony, honestly.)

So, once again, to close it all up 

Thank you everyone who checked it out, who read through the entire thing, who commented and who inspired me! Here's to another couple of successful years until we finally bring down Lilith herself - or we die trying!!

WTDS Iruma-kun - Sketchdump 10.04-06

The rarest thing happened to me - I missed a show! I mean, I regularly miss my old childhood classics like Megaman or Tutenstein, but it is EXCEPTIONALLY rare that I watch any series these days, and that I even want to rewatch them.

Welcome to Demon school, Iruma-kun! managed that, hats off to them. I have started reading the fan-translated manga, and I never do that! Damn, this story is good.

So naturally, it is more difficult to focus on non-Iruma-related creative projects, but I am trying to power through. But just to be safe, maybe brace for some future AU ideas/sketchdumps, huh? Like Lamesh Naberius! Entirely made up by me, probably has a better place in an AU and definitely not the canon story. She is a fine piece of work, I'm telling you. Clearly a lady of tenderness, just look at her pet!

Also, yes, I kinda sorta ship Kalego and Momonoki. I know everyone makes Kalego gay for Balam because god forbid two same-gender characters are just friends, or gay for Opera whom he actively hates and Opera is his BULLY, but ef characterization, I guess. Screw those options, I'm going for the third, buh-byeeee.

I really want to make a full design for Lamesh, tho.

Surf's Up Postcard

Might be the last Surf's Up-related drawing for quite a while, but we can never be sure.

Funnily enough, this was among the very first fanarts I was planning when I rewatched Surf's Up like four times, and it ended up being the closing piece, more than likely. Still, I think it fits well into its place. :)
