Saariselka — The Ground Our Sky (Temporary Residence Ltd.)

Even though The Ground Our Sky is Saariselka’s debut LP, both members of the new duo have been seen round these parts recently. And those appearances prove instructive; if you combine the soothing drone and “coolly delivered comic mantras” of Marielle Jakobsons’ Star Core with the “moody, slow-moving beauty” of Chuck Johnson’s pedal steel from Balsams you’re already most of the way towards the blend that makes up Saariselka (named, it seems, for a Finnish village renowned for its view of the Aurora Borealis). The resulting blend is something more than either part alone, though, something you could call (to steal a term from Gram Parsons) Cosmic American Music. Or call it Earth- or Skygaze (as the album title suggests, we’re in a place where the distinction doesn’t matter that much), a more pastoral and outward-directed sound than the Shoe-version.

Jakobsons’ vocals only occur on two of the six songs here, and those efforts (“Into the Wind” and “Void”) are distinct and lovely enough it’s hard not to wish she’d done a bit more. Those vocals don’t at all disrupt the impression this music gives off of having placed each note and tone carefully and with tenderness, Jakobsons’ Fender Rhodes and synthesizers melding and bending with Johnson’s pedal steel until they seem like opposite sides of the same ribbon, twisting in the breeze in front of you. There’s an invocatory quality to all six tracks here, whether it’s “Subsurface” segueing smoothly from the synth-based, almost funky opening refrains to a pure pedal steel-and-bass pulse setup, or the almost devotional cycles coursing through “Void”.

Interestingly, The Ground Our Sky moves a bit away from the duo’s previous work under this name, 2018’s “Ceres” on Longform Editions. That 17-minute track used many of the same elements found on this work’s palette, but went to a more abstract place with them. Even though two thirds of the songs here land somewhere between the 7th and 8th minute in length, they practically feel like pop songs in comparison. By the time the gently shimmering “Afterlight” winds down Saariselka’s first record it’s clear that even in relatively accessible form this is lovely, head-spinning stuff, perfect for contemplating the night stars.

finished Lost Light with no small amount of emotional rollercoasting....

i’d forgotten that we did get the final explanation of tailgate’s survival, so earlier posting abt that now irrelevant

it’s a tiny thing, but pharma coming through in adaptus and still being fond of ratchet in his own way just adds another dimension to the whole medical staff dynamic, along with his saving of chromedome in the flashback. he was good, once. he did care.

i still think that perceptor saying that he wanted ‘credit where it’s due’ means that he respected and cared for brainstorm all along, and that he wished brainstorm would stop trying to get at him (percy not getting at the time that that was stormy’s way of showing affection)

on the simpatico note, brainstorm’s fate in the Main Universe is 100% meant to show that he and perceptor need to be together, so they can balance one another out

there are a large number of panels that feature ratchet gazing lovingly at drift in the background

rodimus carrying getaway out of the furnace -> poetic comic book

i’m about 80% sure that the scene with Afterlight is meant to imply that Impactor and Megatron’s friendship ran far, far deeper than them just being coworkers, the same as Magnus/Minimus and Megatron’s friendship

everyone except the scavengers being shocked that a) a spacey pink Decepticon would hurl himself at Grimlock and that b) Grimlock would hug said spacey pink Decepticon

Chromedome and Rewind being there for Rung from the start of LL to the end, and Chromedome then becoming a grief counsellor (possibly feeling some echo of Rung)

Now that I think of it, Chromedome and Rung probably had a somewhat close professional relationship due to being the two psych-related professionals on the LL. Not that mnemosurgery isn’t an intensely sketchy practice on many levels, but the knowledge of brain workings required would probably make him a good consultant for more technical details

james put in a panel in the Sad End specifically to make sure i knew that Chromedome and Rewind are quote more in love than ever unquote and now communicate on a level so close and instinctive that they can’t wrap themselves up in the misunderstandings that plagued their relationship. thank you

Oh my gosh WAIT….the bad timeline doesn’t know anything about Rung because Rung is with the good Lost Light…which means that the “canon” timeline IS the good Lost Light….WELL….I GUESS THAT MAKES THINGS A LITTLE BETTER (MAYBE??? IN RETROSPECT I ACTUALLY THINK BOTH VERSIONS FORGOT RUNG...HECK...)

I guess even in the “bad” ending we got some good stuff (like the Whirl & Tailgate / Cyclonus thing) but oof….Rewind’s the only one who remembers Rung…that really hurts…I am glad he and Chromedome are both somewhat ok though :(

I guess the biggest thing I can say is “I can’t believe it’s over”

Post reading note: I had mixed feelings about the ending, but JRO shared this article “How To Say Goodbye and Mean It: The Last Message of IDW's Lost Light” by Cenate Pruitt and it helped settle some stuff for me. I think it’s definitely worth a read once you’re done with LL25.

Every six months the MCM Comic Con rolls back into London and thousands of film, gaming, comics, board games, cosplay and much more make the trip to the Excel Centre for a weekend of fun spent with like-minded individuals.

It doesn’t matter if your preference is anime, blockbuster action, horror, up and coming artists, a chance to pick up rare items in the stalls or sitting in on the many panels that take place. The MCM London Comic Con has something for everybody and while it can be exhausting to see everything, a weekend ticket guarantees you’ll certainly be able to do most of what you want too.

We’ve been a few times and at this latest event we got to see it from a slightly different point of view thanks to our attendance as a member of the press. While we did get to take part in some awesome conference interviews with the likes of Kane Hodder, Linnea Quigley and Tony Todd we also took the time to check out the stands, events and amazing cosplayers. These are five things that we think made this Comic Con the best ever.

Art, Comics and The Creators

The MCM Comic Con always brings in some huge names within the world of art and comics with this year’s showcase being the likes of Frank Miller. However, the real draw for us are the lesser known artists and creators who are there to plug and sell their works. Take a wander through the stalls where you can find all manner of wonderful creations. Talk to the people behind them and help support their vision. This year we came across a number of unique stuff with special mention going to Afterlight Comics and Sarah Gordon.

The Signing Area

Even with the high-profile cancellation of Dave Bautista, the MCM London Comic Con managed to provide an incredible lit of guests for people to meet. From Avengers actors like Paul Bethany, Harry Potter/Game of Thrones actor David Bradley to horror icons like Tony Todd and Linnea Quigley. The main signing area had many, many entertainers for fans to meet and get signed pictures from. Most reasonably priced too! On a personal level getting to meet and talk to Chris Barrie (Rimmer from Red Dwarf) was special but Linnea Quigley is simply a legend to this horror fan. A woman whose role in Return of the Living Dead helped inspire the creation of Games, Brrraaains & A Head-Banging Life.

Cosplay

The imagination and effort that goes into the many of the attendee’s creations is truly staggering and you can spend hours walking around just admiring the different costumes and outfits. Most cosplayers are happy to take a photo or two as well, just remember to ask first! While there might have been a few too many Deadpool variations wandering around, there were many unique offerings and you can see some of them below.

The ‘For Everyone’ Feel

It’s a family friendly event but that’s not the only thing that makes the MCM Comic Con feel so special. No, it’s incredibly inclusive and everyone is welcome. It is not a place of hate, just a place for fans of the same stuff to come together and feel at home. MCM Comic Con is home for many.

The Panels and Events

It’s not all about wandering around and seeing what you find. The Comic Con also runs scheduled events and panels that you can attend. This year saw a wide variety of things taking place including; the Game of Thrones experience where you could check out some of the props used in the show and have your picture taken sitting on the Iron Throne. An exclusive screening of the new J.J. Abrams horror, Overlord. Play new and upcoming Nintendo Switch releases that included the new Super Smash Bros game. Or even stop and have a massage or maybe a tattoo! So much to do and see!
