167b.
(167a)
The Nova Blade is bigger and heavier than Callum thought it would be. It fits awkwardly in his hand, too large to be wieldy, heavy enough to make his wrist hurt if he holds it outstretched for too long, long enough to run down the length of his back and then some as he and Rayla made their way back to Katolis.
Now, it lies horizontally across his desk, almost the full length of it, the ivory stark and foreboding against the polished grain. He's been sleeping up here recently anyway, because there's so much to do, and it's easier to just stay instead of head down to his room, and at least this way the Nova Blade is in reach, in case—
In case of emergencies.
The others still aren't happy with him. Every conversation he's had with Ez since their return has been clipped and full of tension. Opeli's disapproval is obvious in the way her lips tilt downwards everytime he enters a room. Soren he just avoids, because he hates the sneer, the warnings, and the way Soren looks at him like he's one moment away from turning into the same monster Viren was, which makes him mad more than it makes him feel guilty.
They won't even let him near the pearl, which, he supposes, is for the better, but he doesn't like the way it feels like they don't trust him either. The chamber it's in is locked now, and the key lives on Soren's person who is immune to even Stella's sticky fingers, and all the while, the Nova Blade is there and ready, and if they'd just let him—
"Do you even know how use it?"
Callum scowls. This morning's council meeting is tense for a number of reasons but it's the first formal one they've had since his and Rayla's return. Soren stares him down from the other side of the table, blue eyes icy and hard and unimpressed.
"It's just a sword," bristles Callum. "How hard can it be to stab a thing?"
Soren snorts, which only annoys Callum more. "Feels light and easy to use, does it?"
"I—" Callum scowls. "I can figure it out."
"Like you figured out how to use the hand-and-a-halfs everyone else uses."
Silence. Callum feels his face burn because everyone in the room knows how poorly he handled swords when he was younger, how Soren had tried to coax him into learning more in Rayla's absence only for him to grow impatient and leave before a single lesson had finished. He hasn't touched a blade since—and why should he? He's a mage, and he's never needed a reason to, and he can fight with magic better anyway.
"It's a two handed sword," says Soren. "It's different from the one you used when you were training with me. It's designed to let its weight to do the work. You can't use it like the standard issue swords here or you'll hurt yourself."
Callum scowls again. "Just say what you want to say," he snaps. "I'm not in the mood for another lecture."
"He's saying you should learn how to use it," Opeli cuts in, clearly sensing the danger. "With respect, Prince Callum, you cannot seriously expect to use it against Aaravos if you don't even know how to hold it."
"If there's even a need to use it at all," mutters Ez sourly.
Another pause. Another long moment that Callum uses to scowl at everyone but Rayla, only for Rayla to say, "They're right."
Callum rounds on her but she only shifts uneasily in her seat. "You can't use it against him if you can't use it at all. I know you're worried about his influence over you, Callum, but the best way to make sure you can take him is to learn how to use the only weapon we know will work."
"How am I gonna do that?" grumbles Callum. "Where am I gonna get that kind of instruction?"
One more pause. Everyone turns their heads towards Soren and Callum almost walks out entirely.
"No."
"He's the only one here who can use a greatsword, Prince Callum," points out Opeli.
"Why can't Rayla teach me?"
Soren scoffs. "Her blades aren't even little bit the same."
"Oh, right, and you were such a great teacher when we were kids."
"He's better now," snaps Ez. "You would know that if you'd pulled your head out of your butt enough to learn from him while Rayla was gone. Are you seriously so proud you'd rather go in not having any idea what you're doing?"
Callum scowls at them all a third time. Soren's accusations still ring in his ears, and Soren takes one look and knows that it's all he can hear.
"You don't wanna be like him, right?" he says, a challenge in his voice. "Here's your chance. Admit you don't know. Learn how to use the sword."
"Callum." That's Rayla. She reaches across the table to him and touches his hand. Something in her eyes stalls him: something in amongst the fear and concern that he hopes might be the remnants of what they had two years ago; something that might burn for him still.
He relents.
He starts training with it at dawn.

one is simply not up to date on the minecraft server lore. poor communication all around
No this is really more of a *(-2) on communication for me. Thankfully the parallel is fairly easy to explain visually!

12 Days of AU-mas, Day 4
Tyelpe ducked his head. “It’s not fair,” he said quietly. Moryo’s arm draped around him, and Tyelpe leaned gratefully into the embrace. “Your maia?” he asked softly. Tyelpe made a helpless noise. “He’s not mine,” he said, and it came out a gravel croak. He wanted it, but it wasn’t true.

actually it's getting to me because I think I have actually in my real life probably been to Jackson, halfway through a cross-country move. i was fourteen years old when I sat in the passenger seat of my dad's truck pretending I wasn't tired or anxious through a massive blizzard in the dead of night in Wyoming. by the time we stopped for the night I had my face shoved into a pillow that I'd folded up against the window because I figured it would be easier not to let in that the blizzard made me nervous if I pretended to be sleeping (I've never really slept in the car, even after years of long distance travel. I like being a passenger too much to waste that time). when I woke up the next morning it was to brilliant orange rock formations dusted with white powder and the soft sunlight of a new day with less fears. it's getting to me because like I was saying the other day, all along I really have been a girl on a trip with her dad.

So on duolingo it let's you put like a little emoji next to your picture on the leader board and I really think more websites should let me put a dumpster fire prominently on my profile pic just so everyone knows how it's going

me, for seasons: wow, i sure am glad that rayla's name was probably just chosen because of "ray of light" works well for a moonshadow elf because of easy light/dark moon shit. yeah, her name also means "female sheep," which would make me nervous given how sacrificial she is, particularly because of the portrait in the high mage office, but i know it's the first one and they've confirmed the picture was just a random placeholder that stuck. i'm sure season five will address her core issues of sacrifice, rather than just allowing her to take a big step forward in asking for help, so that i don't have to worry going into season six about her doing something big, dumb, and self-sacrificial. i'm sure it'll all work out. it's not like she's a sacrificial lamb or anything—

Hub: so has anyone actually worked out how tall the storm spire is?
Me: not that I'm aware of
Me and hub:
Tumblr media
Finally a meta I can science my way through! First, some assumptions:
The acceleration of gravity is the same in the tdp universe as it is in our world
The density and make up of the atmosphere is the same as ours
There is no downward motion in Rayla's dive, aka she and Viren drop off the Storm Spire but don't accelerate further because of any action from either of them
This involves a fair bit of math that I made hub do because he's better with numbers but the principles are all easy enough to understand. The acceleration of gravity on earth is about 9.81m/s² and Rayla free falls for 53 seconds. In our world, a free fall of 6 seconds is long enough to achieve terminal velocity (200km/hr, or 120mph in American), which is the the point at which your deceleration due to drag and your acceleration due to gravity are equal, aka, the fastest velocity you can achieve at without further acceleration provided by other means.
There's a big long formula here and also some derivatives which I'm not going to type up bc I'm on my phone and Fuck That Shit BUT basically, you can work out Rayla's displacement for the 6 seconds that she's accelerating due to gravity, and then plug in the value for terminal velocity to figure out her displacement for the remainder of the fall. Based on this information, her total displacement before Callum catches her is 2 863 metres (9 363 feet).
It's hard to estimate how far she falls along the the length of the mountain because there's no full shot of the Storm Spire, but we can assume that 2.8km isn't even the half of it. Let's assume, then, that the point at which Callum has to physically draw Ventus Spiralis is considered the point at which they need supplemental oxygen, and that he catches her at that point. On Everest, this is considered the Death Zone, and it is at an altitude 8 000m (26 000 feet).
So 8 000m + 2 863m puts the Storm Spire at a minimum height of 10 863m (35 363 feet).
For context, Everest is only 8 849m tall.
Having trouble visualising? I got u:
Tumblr media
So. THAT'S A FAIR WAY. And it begs the question:
How much of Viren did Claudia actually find at the base of the Storm Spire?
We actually didn't need to do all this math to work that out, we were just having fun. The fastest Viren could have been falling would have been terminal velocity. The ground would have been the equivalent of a truck going at 200km/hr slamming right into his body, so when Claudia says she "dragged [her father's] body into that cave," what she meant was she did it with a bucket. In multiple trips.
Anyway this was pointless but hub and I had fun. Claudia might be crazy, but if you found your dad's body Like That and then had to Drag It Around, I mean. Wouldn't you go crazy too?

Broke: vampires are vulnerable to the trappings of Christianity only, particularly Catholicism, no matter how dubiously applied. (See: Van Helsing's Communion wafer grouting).
Woke: vampires are vulnerable to sincere faith of all kinds, and atheist vampire-hunters need to believe very strongly in the Power of Friendship or their love of Star Trek to get by.
Bespoke: vampires are vulnerable to the faith that they followed when they were alive, and hunters tracking down an ancient vampire are obliged to learn about Neo-Babylonian theology or Middle Palaeolithic bear cults.

coz the thing is. ultimate weapons and stats are cool and fun to have. but they make it so...not fun.
i remember back with base kh1 and kh2 i enjoyed the simple grind to get ultima - and then they upped the requirements in the remasters and it was no longer fun. just weird hoop jumping (this is a metaphor there are no superman64 hoops involved) and mechanics designed specifically to irritate you. like good god.
like im gonna be real. every game of that nature should have a 'just give it to me' option. yes im serious dont look at me like that.
if its simple grind, sure, most anyone can do that. but when its something like 'win this rigged against you race' or 'do the equivalent of a math exam' there should be an option to just. get the thing anyway. make it so you dont get the achievement. thats fine. only a very limited amount of people care about those anyway.
just look at hades(the game). because it has godmode it enabled me to actually play and experience the story and gameplay without crying out of frustration because i just am not that good a gamer. like its fine.
git gud shouldnt be a requirement to experience all a game has to offer. things should be accessible to everyone. you might say 'well you dont have to do the side game stuff to enjoy the story' but maybe i wanna see the cool weapon? maybe i want to see my fantasy guy hold the magic nuke and blast the final boss with obscene amounts of damage. i deserve it.
