(*disclaimer: i have adhd myself and work in education/educational psychology, which is the basis of this post in which i get wayyyyy too analytical about a fictional character; however, i'm not a psychiatrist or doctor and am not qualified to diagnose real people with adhd or anything else ... seriously, our only representation is cis white boys whose adhd is an explanation for them being the class clown and treated as a joke so please don't get salty at me for claiming a fictional character that isn't a cis white boy as part of the adhd gang)

this ended up being really long and tumblr cut me off so there is going to be a part 2
impulsiveness - let's get this one out of the way first since this is obviously really central to santana's character; she has a tendency to just kind of say whatever she thinks in the moment without thinking about the consequence and it often gets her into trouble. she also just does random shit like try to get into a physical altercation with lauren zizes who is in the wrestling team, and later move into kurt and rachel's apartment completely out of the blue and go through their stuff for some bizarre reason (which is funny in a tv context but also like ... santana wtf don't go through their stuff).
difficulty initiating and maintaining friendships - santana has maybe 2 secure close friendships throughout the series (brittany and mercedes) and even then there are some complications; brittany because they're in love with each other, and even mercedes competed with santana over puck (ew) but that was resolved by the end of the episode. all of santana's other female friendships (except tina but they're not really all that close and even they have a one-sided feud in season 4 where surprisingly santana is the unbothered one) appear to be sources of stress and anxiety for her because they revolve around competing (see her storyline with rachel from 5x09-5x13). it's also established that santana is close friends with quinn throughout the series (even if they have a tendency to compete with each other) but santana says in 5x10 that quinn doesn't live too far away from her and yet she never makes the effort to see her, even though they ended their senior year relatively amicably. she's way more forgiving of other people than she's given credit for, but she just craves acceptance and friendship from this bunch of misfits so much and is really insecure about whether or not she has it.
rejection sensitive dysphoria - this could literally describe like 90% of her interactions with people (mostly people that aren't brittany). the entire pezberry feud is essentially santana experiencing rsd around her friendship (or lack thereof) with rachel and then doubling down on rachel's expectations of her to save face. another example is in 2x20 when kurt wins prom queen and santana's immediate first thought is "everyone hates me". this post from themostrandomfandom suggests that santana has an anxious attachment type. even in some of her interactions with brittany, she's anxious about their relationship and needs reassurance ("you didn't say you love me back" in 2x18, "are we dating or what" in 3x04).
disorganisation - santana's bedroom (see 2x15 and 4x04) and locker (see the scene in 3x22 with her mom) are both literal disaster zones, and according to brittany, her car would qualify her to be on "whoreders" (honestly same)
difficulty with time management (chronic lateness) - "i like to make an entrance" aka she lost track of time and knew she was going to be late so she planned it (credit: @smolbrittana on instagram)
emotional reactivity and difficulty with emotional regulation - santana has very visceral reactions to all emotions, positive and negative (see this post by themostrandomfandom) (see this post by drshebloggo); she's very easily affected by external stimuli (e.g. the scene in 1x03 when she gets her tanning privileges revoked). she feels her emotions really intensely and it takes her a long time to calm down. she has rage (and of course i'm obligated to include this awesome compilation by literallylebanese). in the hurt locker scene (2x15), santana articulates really well that she has so many big feelings that she doesn't know what to do with so the only thing she can do about them is lash out at other people. it's also worth noting that santana is extremely defensive and reactive in her social interactions with others; she's very rarely the one to "shoot first" (for lack of a better term) and a lot of her lashing out against her peers (i.e. getting revenge on finn/quinn in 2x12, her interactions with rory in 3x04/3x06, most of her interactions with rachel in 5x09-5x12, her monologue to kurt in 6x03) are in response to perceived wrongdoing/criticism/rejection (i'm not justifying these but context and motivation matters). she also has really visceral reactions to positive emotions; her whole face just instantly lights up when brittany smiles at her or touches her or someone compliments her.
poor financial management skills - homegirl literally blew half of her college fund on post-breakup retail therapy (maribel lopez seriously i love you but why would you just hand this child a cheque if you knew she was getting a scholarship)
impulsiveness around romantic relationships - u-haul lesbian jokes aside, santana moves very fast with dani, calling dani her girlfriend within like 5 seconds of meeting her, it's unclear when she and dani officially break up (my headcanon is that things went somewhat sour after dani voted to kick santana and rachel out of pamela lansbury, especially based on what we know about santana and her feelings of anxiety around real and/or perceived rejection, but i guess we'll never know). it's possible that dani may have been a hyperfixation.
poor adult interactions/distrust in authority - homegirl has this in spades; her abuela literally threatens to beat her up with a chair and tried to sell her once, and sue mistreats all the cheerleaders on a regular basis. even will schuester who she says she likes kicks her out of glee club, refuses to defend her and pushes for her to get suspended after the finn incident (as does shelby corcoran), and shames her for reporting his subpar teaching, so that's educational trauma on top of that and she has a tendency to challenge them, mr schuester especially.
compulsive fidgeting - often has a nail file or one of brittany's funky pens, also often fidgets with her hands when she's nervous - mostly around her britt-britt (see also)
extroverted introvert - santana is simultaneously brash and outspoken while also being bashful and socially awkward (see her interactions in 5x02 with dani)

sup homies, as you know, tumblr cut me off so i had to make a part 2. (here's part 1)
ambitious but lacking in direction - noted terrible educator will schuester describes santana as being "unfocused" in 3x16. she's indecisive about college in the latter half of season 3, initially says she wants to go then flip-flops, and then goes to louisville (fun fact: donovan mitchell also went there) for a short period of time then drops out. after that she has a bunch of projects and career goals that never really go anywhere. (partially thanks to the lazy writing on the show)
fear of failure - santana wanted to go to new york after graduation but initially wanted to stay behind when she found out brittany wasn't graduating (like immediately), then chose to take the scholarship to louisville despite brittany and quinn both pointing out that she had the cash from her parents to pursue her dreams in new york (brittany was a lot more supportive and less judgy though). she did end up going after unpacking her anxiety around it with britt though.
low self-esteem, anxiety and/or depression - season 2 is what i like to refer to as "santana lopez's sad gay era", however i'd also argue that season 4 until mid season 5 (when she reunites with brittany) is kind of a low period for her as well. the break-up is painful for both of them. they're one another's safe people so when they don't have each other in close proximity, both of them experience depression. i would also consider her demeanour at the beginning of 5x09 as an example of her exhibiting signs of depression. santana also experiences a lot of anxiety around her interpersonal relationships (pretty much all of season 2, 4x16, 5x09-5x13); in 5x18 it's very apparent that she's scarred by the experience with auditioning for rachel's understudy part and doesn't want to intrude on mercedes (thankfully, mercedes is awesome, we love mercedes jones here, themostrandomfandom does a great job of analysing this storyline here). it's also worth noting that despite how clumsily she goes about things, santana lopez is the most loyal, ride-or-die person on this damn show (she's definitely a gryffindor or hufflepuff who thinks she's a slytherin despite my less than positive thoughts on the transphobic lady's book series, or - in the context of the superior book series - a mary anne who thinks she’s a claudia) but the only acknowledgement she gets is shame, so she internalises it to give people an "out" ("I'm numb to people's feelings", "I have no heart").
can be easily distracted (while also hyperfocused on other things) - has a tendency to zone out of conversations (credit to @santanaslawyer on twitter) and couldn't remember her locker combo around brittany (although some of that could have also been santana being in her sad gay era and pining over britt)
narrow window of tolerance - santana was completely done with everyone's shit like all the time
strong sense of justice - homegirl uses her bitch powers to protect the people she cares about (see 2x17, 3x11, 5x18). other people aren't allowed to make fun of her mates, that's her job, dammit! she's also proactive in reporting mr schuester's lack of efficiency as a spanish teacher not because she dislikes him (which she doesn't; she might roll her eyes at him all the time but she does actually like him as a person) but because his teaching promotes offensive stereotypes, harms her and negatively affects everyone's education (and to her credit she is way more patient and charitable to him than he deserves when he literally chastises her in front of everyone for doing it). she will also challenge authority in situations where she is being held to a different standard to others. in 3x07, when figgins is considering suspending santana, she pushes back against it (rightfully so) because she doesn't understand how there isn't a zero-tolerance policy for violence when finn and puck get into it in the middle of school, or when the glee club get slushied, or when kurt is repeatedly physically assaulted by karofsky, but she slaps finn (after he outed her) and this policy suddenly exists. same applies in 3x13 when finn and rachel are allowed to have very graphic PDAs at school with no complaint from the authorities, but santana and brittany have one chaste peck and it's the end of the world, and she rightfully tells figgins that there's a double standard.
(really random) hyperfixations - it's a popular glee headcanon that santana spends a lot of time researching random shit on wikipedia (which she probably did the night before her wedding so she could explain to britt about the superstition around the bride/groom not seeing each other before the wedding) based on the absolute batshit cultural references she comes out with. she makes the most random cultural references (e.g. comparing rory to the great gazoo, which is a really random side-character from the flintstones), and has somewhat of a fascination with lizards (2x04, 2x12). she also just randomly made an entire voodoo doll of rachel berry just for shits and giggles, like … wtf
lack of spatial awareness - so this one's mostly just naya rivera's physical comedy, but ... in the nicest possible way ... santana's a tad bit unco, isn't she? (see: her very charming wacky inflatable arm-waving tube person dancing in 3x08, the scene where she literally walks headfirst into a balloon in 3x22 and the scene in 5x17 where she gets attacked by pigeons).
hyperactive - santana's abuela put her in ballet classes because she was "such a tomboy and it really pissed [her] dad off"; obviously we know she had a mullet and dressed up as uncle jesse from full house for halloween (and she knows how to tie a tie, thanks again sarah) - those are obviously aesthetic things but "tomboy" can also be code for "hyperactive" in afab people (particularly if santana's grandmother was of the "children should be seen and not heard" generation).

"I need you to listen to me, okay? Really listen. Let me say everything before you say anything."
Brittany nodded.
"I talked to my parents, to Sue, to some people at Lima Community College. I told Sue that I was leaving Louisville at the end of the semester; that the scholarship should go to someone who would take advantage of the opportunity." She held up her hand to forestall Brittany's argument. "Listen. I'm miserable. I hate it in Louisville; I hate the bitches I cheer with, hell – I hate cheering, my roommate is a jerk with hygiene issues, and I just can't...I just can't seem to find my footing. I gave it two months and it's just not working for me. Being away from you just makes it that much more unbearable. I'm not leaving for you or because of you, got it?"
Brittany nodded and waited for Santana to continue.
"You're still not doing well in school. I talked to my dad and told him that you're a genius; when we study together you know what you're talking about. We did homework together last year; there's no way you had a 0.0 GPA because I saw you do – and hand in – homework. That alone would have brought your average up. So...I don't know if you've ever been tested for ADHD or dyslexia or other neuro-divergent disorders but I do know that you can answer any math question correctly; you just don't answer it the way the school system wants you to."
Santana took a breath and re-ordered her thoughts.
"You didn't fail, Britt," Santana looked directly at Brittany to let her see the honesty and sincerity there, "The school system failed you. Badly." She shook her head. "While I was talking to Sue I mentioned something about it, how I didn't understand how you could fail like that. Sue actually made the point that McKinley's special-ed department is almost non-existent. Did you know that neuro-divergent isn't actually a medical term? It's so that people can avoid using words like normal and abnormal to describe the way someone's brain works. Something this school system never takes into account."
Santana bit her lip in thought. "You're a genius, Britt. You've got better memory than most people, you think outside the box and see things differently, and you can do complex math stuff in your head. You're bilingual – and I know you know what that means," she gave Brittany a grin that the blonde returned slyly before Santana looked down at her hands, wringing relentlessly in her lap.
"So, dad's got some friends in the neurology department and he thinks maybe you should get tested. I don't think you're dyslexic because you never seem to have trouble reading and writing but I don't know and they'd be able to figure out why the teachers here aren't good for you."
Santana paused for another moment; she didn't know how Brittany was going to take all of this but she couldn't not try and do something. She couldn't just stand by – again – and let Brittany fail...again.
"After this semester, I'm going to take some gen-ed courses at LCC. I'm going to actually apply to colleges I'm interested in. Right now, I don't know what I want to study or even what I want to do. I know I said I want to be a star but I'm not sure I even know what that'll look like. So I'm going to take the credits I get this semester and the credits I get from LCC and transfer them to wherever I end up. And..." Santana took a breath before continuing, "LCC also has courses and tutors that can help people who are neuro-divergent gain the tools they need to succeed."
Santana swallowed hard. She was almost done saying all she had to say; the rest was up to Brittany.
"When I leave here – whether it's June, July, August, or September – I want you to leave with me. I realized something; I don't care where I go or what I do. If you're not with me, it's not what I want. When I sang that song..."If I Can't Have You"? I lied to Mr. Schue because he got so weird. That song was all about you – and only about you. I realized something about wanting to be rich and famous; I only wanted that because then I'd be like Ellen and no one could ever tell me I couldn't be with you. The money and the fame would get us out of Lima – together."
Santana took a deep breath and looked up. "Anyway, that's all I have to say." She looked at Brittany hopefully; hope that she didn't hurt Britt's feelings or overstep some boundary.
Brittany wiped away the remainder of her tears. "Then why..." she stopped, gathered her thoughts and started again, "if you don't want to break up with me and you did all this work so we could be together...why sing me a break-up song?" Brittany looked confused.
"See. Genius." Santana's eyes fell back to her hands and voice dropped to a whisper. "Because I was going to break up with you." Tears began slipping down her face. "I promised myself, when we were standing by the lockers after Nationals, junior year that I wouldn't hurt you anymore." She looked back up, locking eyes with Brittany. "And that's all I was doing. I couldn't be here like you needed me. I couldn't call or Skype or text or come home on any kind of consistent basis. I wanted you to be able to find someone who could be here for you. Even if it wasn't me. The look on your face the other night," a sob broke free and she shook her head, "I was hurting you and I hated myself for it."
"Santana..." Brittany's tears were flowing again.
"And then I realized that I was just too damn selfish to let you go; to give someone else a chance to make you theirs. I – I just couldn't do it. That's when I talked to my dad and did the research. The song still fits though," Santana smiled through her tears. "The last verse..."she cleared her throat and, in her sweet, raspy, amazing Santana voice sang:

Brittany threw her arms around Santana, the two of them crying into each other's shoulders. It took several moments before they were able to pull back and Brittany looked into Santana's eyes, "It's all I ever wanted...to be yours...proudly so."

First impression
I first saw Brittany through tumblr gifs of her (and Santana) and immediately was intrigued and needed to know more because I knew I was about to be obsessed😌
Impression now
14 year old me was correct🥰 Brittany is a hilarious genius with dance skills a person could only dream of and I’ll protect her with my life
Favourite moment
I spent a full 20 minutes trying to pick one, this was tough😭 okay so I’m not gonna commit and say it’s my all time favourite moment, it’s just my favourite moment of today: when she makes Santana that playlist in Heart. It was just so sweet and so Brittany🥺
Also musical/song wise: her performance of Run The World (girls) did something to my brain chemistry I still don’t think I’ve recovered from😍
Idea for a story
For in universe: I would have loved to have seen her have a similar story to what Mike had where it explored his love of dance. I wish they really delved into why it meant so much to her, and even maybe have a storyline where she’s (physically, I know there was a little bit in 100 about her like just losing the passion but I want more) unable to dance for a period of time for some reason, and how that affects how she navigates the world (with Santana supporting her of course)
Alternate universe: I’m trying (real emphasis on trying lmao) to write a fic where she’s the owner of a wacky nyc bar, dealing with having to sacrifice her dancing dreams after the loss of her mother, and how her relationship with Santana opens her back up again🥰
Unpopular opinion
Definitely not an unpopular opinion but more of a rant to people who think her relationship with Santana was ‘bad’/manipulative: I think most of the moments where people think Brittany is just being ‘stupid’ or gullible, she knows fully well what’s going on. Like maybe sometimes she’ll just say something silly because she doesn’t like an awkward moment, or just because she’s doing a bit and thinks it’s fun to mess with people, or maybe she’ll play ‘ditzy’ to avoid taking responsibility because she hates the confrontation. And hey, maybe sometimes she does get confused/doesn’t understand something, doesn’t means she doesn’t have agency and have the ability to make her own decisions💙
Favourite relationship
Imagine the shock and horror if I said anything other than Brittana? Of course it’s her relationship with Santana🥰 They are just so sweet and supportive of each other and they have one of the healthiest relationships from the show! They love each other unconditionally and accept each other, flaws and all💖
Favourite headcanon
That she is 100% neurodivergent🥰 (I’d see her more as having adhd but I totally agree with those who also headcanon her as autistic) I think that’s why I get defensive when people act like Brittany has no agency and is just stupid and gullible - she knows what the fuck is up, she’s just not neurotypical!!
I also like to think she now owns her own dance studio and has even choreographed for big artists for tv performances/tours🥰

in my head 5yp baby #3 is a girl named Kennedy Elena and she is basically duncan's mini me (in terms of personality, at least). but unlike duncan, her parents are all about like. nurturing their child and helping her with the things she struggles with. so like she actually gets an adhd and dyslexia diagnosis and duncan spends evenings helping her decipher her homework and she still gets into trouble but not nearly as much as he did.
idk like he sees her as a chance to prove that there was a way to raise him right. and he wants to give her all the opportunities he never got..
and yk courtney is that girls fiercest fuckin advocate. she rolls up to parent-teacher conferences ready to murder any educator who'd rather punish her child than give her the skills she needs to succeed.

i am also a total hoe for soundtracks and sometimes i just listen to full soundtracks for days on end, one of the recent ones being the interstellar ost cause i just can’t help myself and also hans zimmer creates amazing osts with his team!!
then my brain remembered a scene from an older movie of a girl singing mariah carey in the back of a car and having the time of her life so of course i (adhd ridden ass) had the song stuck in my brain for weeks and am still listening to it now
and i have been going through lauryn hill’s discography as i do once every few months and someone also reminded me of this amazing song of hers

Sorry if this has been asked. There has been a lot of posts about mental ilness and behavioural issues and there have been quite a few good points for blaine and Brittany being on spectrum and I was wondering do you think any other character had mental ilness and behavioural issues? For example Quinn seemed to have depression and baby blues and some other issues likely caused by parents alchaloism and pill popping that was hinted at
Hasn't been but even if it had, no need to apologize Anon! In case anyone asks something that's been covered I just link to it :) or add new thoughts because I always have those lol. Disclaimer that I'm not an expert of any kind on anything psychology related (or otherwise) so these are just fandom thoughts.
I've also read posts about Rachel being on the spectrum but can't find those rn, sorry, and here's a two-parter about Santana and ADHD. I'd say I agree with that though I can't add much to it.
I'd say Quinn for sure had some flavour of post-partum depression that she repressed for a year until her menty b in New York and subsequent skank era. In general she definitely strikes me as someone who struggles with depression. The Fabrays' issues are, whew, a big topic but yeah that probably affected her too.
I think anxiety isn't too much of a stretch for Tina since she was so socially nervous she invented a stutter for herself. Blaine is an anxious little bean too. Again I'm not qualified in any way to diagnose and they're fictional but that's my guess.
I would also consider some kind of depression for Santana but my main thing with her is anger issues, so more on the behavioural side. (There I go reminding myself of that Quinntana post ooops.) That could also just be a manifestation of ADHD and I wouldn't rule out ODD with her, but that's really getting into the science of diagnosing fictional characters. Bottom line is her anger issues definitely are actual Issues that, in my ideal world, she eventually goes to therapy to talk about.
I think that's about as deep as I thought about it. I think the most compelling case is for sure Quinn and depression, most probably post-partum. She never got to really process that. I'm generally not one to actually label characters, I more just analyze and discuss symptoms since that's where our story is but yeah there's a case to be made with lots of Glee chs.
