real life gets busy, and people need to put that first; however, i ask for consistent replies! i'm looking for someone who can reply about once a week, but would prefer 2-3x a week! still, i'm pretty friendly and laidback, and won't demand any more than you are capable of giving at any time, though i'd ask for a heads up if you need some time! winter break is coming up for me, so i'll have tons of free-time to write.

So… are we ready to party like it’s 1999?

Party Like it’s 1999 is back for The 25th Anniversary of Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace!

Once again, thank you to wild_huntress for letting me borrow from her original Party Like It’s 1999.

Guidelines:

It's 25 years!  Have fun writing Q/O as if you’ve just seen the movie and story ideas are swirling around in your head. 

Stories can be long or short. AU or AR.  Ratings G thru NC-17.   Drabbles, poetry, art, fan-vids, and GIF sets are all welcome!

*If you write in a series, you can post a new chapter or stand-alone sequel. Please include a link to your series.

*RPF, RPS (real person fiction/slash) The focus should be on the actors and movie, past or present, and clearly labeled RPF or RPS.

*NO WIP (works in progress).

*No underage Q/O. (under 18).

*Keep in mind this is a Q/O-centric celebration.  Pre-slash is fine, but the relationship btw the fellows should be the focus of the story. No father-son, Qui-as-a-parent-type fiction; this is not what the celebration is about. 

Ideally, your work should be posted on or within the week of May 19th - the date of the USA premiere of The Phantom Menace. Reminders will be posted as we get closer to the posting date.

All works should be tagged #party like it’s 1999 wherever you choose to post it- (A03, Tumblr, Live Journal, etc.) and a direct link to your work sent to me, for the Master List.

All time favorite ship? this is unfair - it absolutely depends on the brainrot at any give time. if you're asking me RIGHT NOW it's cegan, no question but like…. three months ago? who knows

Thoughts on dialogue in another language? i used to be like FUCK IT WE SPEAK RUSSIAN but i cringe when i look back on those times (and have flashbacks to writing Japanese into Gundam Wing fic in highschool) which is to say, to each their own but if i can't speak it fluently or have a friend who does who can edit, i try not to include it in my own work

First fandom you wrote in? technically it was a sweet little Luke/OC insert from Star Wars circa, ohhhhh uh, early 90s but the first fandom i fell into a spiral about is going to be Gundam Wing FOR SURE (gimme that 1x5 please and thank you, strawberries are so sweet you know?)

Favorite fic you've written? this is also unfair - it's the unnamed one in my head that i rant to Abby about while i'm drunk at 4am thanks

like expanding on my comments from that previous reblog's tags but it has always, always fucking baffled me that people get so confused about whether or not shipping minecraft characters is RPF. because. a whole lot of these people are or have previously been into fandoms that are live action. yknow, where the actor literally physically embodies their character so all fanart inherently uses their literal face and body to represent the character. Do you think every couple in a TV show is rpf??? Why is it so much harder for you to draw the line when it's minecraft RP than when it is literally physical real humans directly acting as their characters??? And don't give me the shit that there's a difference bc minecraft RP is improv and they switch from IC to OOC a lot, because people can grasp D&D characters not being their actors/players.

It really isn't hard, guys.

Today I found out that RPF doujinshi exist and in a brief burst of hope I tried to search for doujinshi of my obscure Japanese actor ship. But the only things that came up were articles about RPF/namamono that were guidelines about not publicly sharing them or only talking about them in locked accounts because they might get prosecuted if the subjects of the doujinshi are made aware of it and now I am very sad. Not only will I probably never find fic of my RPS, Japanese fans don't even have anything like Hustler vs Falwell to protect them from getting sued....... pouring one out for them rn.

(Also while I do appreciate the Japanese fans' commitment to making sure the celebs involved in RPF never come across it and I think anglophone fandoms should take notes, at the same time it's like 😭 damn I really don't have any choice but to write the fic I want huh?? The only other people I know who also ship it are my two mutuals and a handful of Chinese fans on bilibili, and idek where they'd post fic...)

Who am I

If you're like me you visit other people's blogs to see if you want to follow them. I've written this handy post to show you about who I am as a Tumblr user.

I got back on Tumblr because of Good Omens and I've been hyperfixating. The best Good Omens metas I've reblogged use the tag "metas that make sense".

I originally got on Tumblr because of my favorite band Depeche Mode and I RP shipped Martin Gore and Dave Gahan (Gahore). Then came back to Tumblr years later because of Sherlock, JohnLock and FreeBatch. Yes, I ship Michael Sheen/David Tennant (Shennant). I am an RP shipper and think that's totally okay because I don't shove my ships in the actor's/ musician's faces. I keep my RPF activities to Tumblr, AO3, and an anonymous blog. I don't see any harm in that. I don't care if you think it's gross. Let me be.

Speaking of that anonymous blog, here's a link. If you are a Good Omens shipper I highly recommend this post. If you are a JohnLock shipper or one of the few Gahore shippers out there I highly recommend this post. I recommend either one if you tend to obsess over ships. I mostly use it as an outlet to work out my mental health issues.

Loki might be a new obsession but I do intend to keep my blog primarily about Good Omens. Loki, Sherlock and Depeche Mode posts might occasionally appear and well as other random posts once in a while.

I've written a little Depeche Mode fanfic here on AO3. I'm strongly considering writing a Shennant fic. I haven't written any fic since 2010.

A few other things about me personally: I'm a tea snob. American. Liberal. 49 years old. I guess I call myself a goth - love new wave/dark wave, goth and industrial music. I wear a lot of black. I used to go to a lot of concerts but that's tapered off lately because I'm taking care of my elderly mother long distance and it's a lot for me emotionally. Ships are my emotional escape. I'm she/her, bisexual but not currently dating anyone. Obviously, I love slash (NOT femslash). I'm currently reading Good Omens/Shennant fics exclusively.

My blog name MartinsHarmony originally was homage to the song Wrong by Depeche Mode that features Martin Gore's harmony alongside Dave's singing (specifically the 5th "too long" in the song). It's the reason I got on Tumblr in the first place. That harmony is pure sex and kicked off my love of gay and RP shipping and fanfic (well that's not entirely true but TLDR it's close enough). However Martin Freeman is also a Martin, and Michael Sheen sometimes gets called Martin lol so there's that.

I'm so sorry it took me all day to respond to this and I'm about to ramble so feel free to skim this, I'm gonna dump it under a read more. ( Do people even still use these in 2024? askdjhf )

I never directly attacked anyone in my time while pretending to be an anti. I was just completely silent on the matter, letting my morality complex and p.edophobia ocd wage war on my well-being.

It's ironic, I've been on this site since about 2010; and in 2012 when I started to be at my first most active point on tumblr and had a friend group on here, I would blog about Wincest (SPN) on main and no one said anything or thought anything of it, they just kept scrolling. That was the norm. People just SHIPPED whatever they wanted.

Flash ahead to like 2018 and suddenly everywhere I go there are now neon eyesore banners on posts, including fucking stimboards and whatnot with 'p.roship d.ni' and 'a.nti-a,ntis d.ni' ( I'm censoring that just so this post isn't blacklisted from proshippers because that is NOT my stance ) and I was like 'I don't even know what these terms MEAN?? where did these come from??' but I was too afraid to ask anyone so I just. Stayed silent and promised myself I'd only reblog "safe" content and that I was "happy" I'd "become a better person since then". ( spoiler: I was lying to myself. )

And over the years any time I made new friends who had never seen that content on my blog back then, I'd just say I didn't support Problematic Content(tm) and I'd only talk about and rp and reblog ships that were "normal", because I was now so afraid people would reject me at any time because it seemed like the anti crowd was so large and violent and nasty -- my mental health at that time would not have been able to handle that hatred.

-- in fact I had this SAME experience in the plural community with the a.nti-e.ndos for identifying as a median system. ( we know now that we are a bpdgenic osdd-1b system, but we still prefer most median terminology to describe ourselves. ) But the traumagenic DID systems who were pro-endo were so much more welcome to interacting with us than the exclusionists. And it's the same bullshit different flavor happening here with the proshippers.

How much overlap is there between a.nti-e.ndo and a.nti-p.roship rhetoric, I wonder? It's wild. I wish I had learned how to undo my black and white thinking so much sooner and listen to new points of view instead of just shying away from the unknown in fear.

But this is a new year, and this is a new me. This blog is going to be a source of love and positivity and learning about other people's experiences. Any discourse or negativity ( even the validating kind ) will remain on my sideblog. I don't have to like or even agree with everything I see online, but I am going to support people's right to say it, do it, make content of it, as long as all parties involved are consenting. ( Fictional characters, animated or live action, do not have the autonomy to consent or not consent so people can do anything they want with fiction that makes them feel happy and fulfilled, full stop. Yes, this includes RPF and selfshipping. As long as you keep your content in your safe space and no actors/musicians/etc involved in the creation of that character you're using are able to see it - I will support your right to make or consume any content as you see fit. )

I have to just say something

I really, really don't like that the default tag for all Pixlriffs-related fiction on AO3 is this:

RPF stands for 'Real Person Fiction' and it makes me uncomfortable that - when I'm writing fiction about a character portrayed by Jonny AKA Pixlriffs (e.g., the Copper King, the Archaeologist/Historian) as they are in the Empires series - it falls under the same tag as anyone writing about Jonny himself.

Even if you look at the AO3 tag of 'Pixlriffs' it redirects to the above tag.

To me, this is the equivalent of writing LotR fanfic, tagging it with 'Frodo' or 'Aragorn' and having it redirect to 'Elijah Wood' or 'Viggo Mortensen'. It's not about the actors; it's about the characters they portray.

If you're someone who does write RPF/RPS, then that's fine. That's your thing, and I'm not knocking what you like to do. In fact, many (many, because god I'm older than probably most of you reading this - lol) years ago - in a fandom far far away - I dabbled in a bit of that myself. But the older I've gotten, the more I personally get a bit squicked by it, so I'd rather not see it.

And I really don't like that the default tag for the fandom I'm currently writing in includes not only the player's real life name, but also that 'real person fiction' bit :( Even though pretty much all of the fiction I've read there is about the characters and not the people/players themselves; it's just the name of the tag that I don't like.

Sidenote: Yes, there's a whole 'nother load of semantics we could get into, about when you play a character in a game for so long you end up identifying with them, so they become you and you become them etc; believe me, I get that; I've been there myself in a place where I've been playing for over 15 years now. But there's still a separation when you tell a story as that character (e.g., making them a king or an archaeologist etc) and people want to write about that character. I have no interest in writing fiction about 'Minecraft Survival Guide Pix' because - to me - that is Jonny himself, just playing the game and teaching us all about it. That's different.

I don't even know where I'm going with this, tbh, or even if it makes sense. I just needed to get it off my chest. It's just how AO3 works, and if you want your writing to be noticed there you have to use those tags. I just... eh.

it’s incredibly creepy to ship real people you don’t even know irl, and doubly creepy to describe their relationships as “canon” as though they’re characters and not actual real people?? literally why just ship fictional characters its not that hard 😭

Hmm ok RPF debates have been ongoing since forever and I absolutely agree that there's a fundamental ethical line in it that CAN NEVER BE CROSSED. Like I absolutely cringe when ppl show the actual people their fanworks of them being shipped with someone else. As well as if fans lost sight of reality and they actually started believing their own stuffs, and even worse, TARGET their supposed significant others, this happened so many times and it's such a toxic culture because it harms so many people and hurt their personal lives.

But on the other hand, I also don't believe that people should be punished for, in its most basic form, basically 'hoping' and 'rooting' for certain people to be together. The thing with RPF is, I think the morale boundary is firm that we only imagine said RP in the capacity of its 'public persona', that is, what they have WILLINGLY shred with us in the context of what they're known in the public for, if they're perhaps an actor, an athlete, etc. My interpretation of someone that I might ship in RPF is exactly only from the media that they operate in, their interviews, their performances, etc, or basically what THEY PRESENT THEMSELVES TO THE PUBLIC, (how they are as a tennis player in the tennis world, as a footballer in the football sphere, as an actor in showbiz, etc).

Precisely because we have NO IDEA what their personal lives look like, nor is it our business, that I believe give RPF a little bit of breathing room. Because the part that is 'fictionalised' so to say is the part of them understood to us SUBJECTIVELY through the medium of our social media, press, television, etc. We can never know what they're really like in real life and we only have access to one section of their world, not the others. In a sense, RPF can also be seen simply as another perspective of interpretation, of this 'public persona'. I believe that the way certain people present themselves in media allow multitudes of understandings, rhetorics, and explanations to be made just as with ANY MEDIA CONTENT, without all of them necessarily being true, or even false.

In this context, I believe it'd be wrong to say that there's no element of fiction in it whatsoever either. Because, as much as we'd like to believe it and stay within the moral safe zone, I don't think fictional works are that safe either. A LOT of fictional works are actually based on real people, and a lot of the romance stories or movies you consumed took major part of their inspiration from REAL LIFE events. The difference is, of course, they adopted this persona under a different name, a given fictional name that the writers gave us. For instance, even Holmes and Watson are based on real people and most of the greatest work of fiction has a large chunk of reality rooted in it.

This also answers why RPF is appealing, because in essence, I believebhumans might love dreaming and hoping, but they crave even more to know that there's an element of truth in it, that this story is embedded in reality and that it can also happen to us. Isn't that the whole attractice premises of biopic movies/ historical fictions?

Bottom line is, I think it's frankly hypocritical to morally discredit people who might want to indulge in a different version of reality, albeit if they didn't hide it behind the jargons of fictional names and places. What I think is critical, however and I agree with you here, is that the separation between fiction and reality ALWAYS needs to stay clear, and we need to respect their privacy in parts of their lives that they don't share to the public, but that's precisely why we have safety measures in fanworks, the locked accounts in AO3, how certain posts are restricted etc.

In layman's term, anon, I give you the example of Rick Astley. When rick-rolling became viral, he initially becane really depressed about people mocking him (which in context might even be more horrible than aggressively hoping he ended up with someone else lol as people literally make him the butt of a joke for a decade). But years later, he's come to terms with it and now fully embraces it, singing 'never gonna give you up' to full stadiums, joking about it, even doing a parody of it and generally having a blast reminiscing his youth.

In his own words, he said, "I finally understood that it might be me in all those videos, but it was never actually about me."
