Ashamed to walk in the light of the Vigil after the horror he had helped unleash, the Copper King fled from Pixandria, shedding the kingly raiments he no longer saw himself fit to wear.
His journey took him north, to a village who had once taken him in with open arms. There he hoped to find solace and rest, return to his books, and perhaps find escape from the fate of the world.
But the villagers' eyes turned hard and cold against him, and they offered him no shelter. For the throes of the dragon's demise had echoed among the dunes, and they knew the foolhardy king had played a part.
So the Copper King wandered the desert sands alone, the vultures circling overhead, the sun dipping over the horizon, lost in thought…

The absolute standout of the new soundtrack.
And does anyone else think that little upwards key change (minor into major) reminds them a bit of the Slime Rancher theme?
God, I love this one!

Bonus thought:
If a story made you have enough feels that you gushed to your friend(s) about it in Discord or wherever, please consider also gushing to the author about it. You have no idea how much encouragement you might be giving that author to keep going, oftentimes in the face of very little (or even no) actual feedback.
I have seen people gushing about one of my stories elsewhere, which I wouldn't even have been aware of had I not stumbled across it, because they didn't comment at all on the actual story on AO3. And while it was lovely to see them gushing, it was a bit dispiriting to know that I had no clue that I'd affected them so deeply until I found out by accident.

REanima cover and illustration reveal!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A while ago, I wrote REanima: a short story set in a far-future dystopian world. It features Saiziege (Mythical Sausage) as a bounty hunter, CuprePaxi (Pixlriffs) as an augmented future version of the immortal Copper King who now repairs androids, and Parlse (PearlescentMoon) the little Copper Golem. There's even a small cameo from Darvi (David the copper ageing facility)!
And, since Sabira | @floweroflaurelin had created such beautiful artwork for me before, when I commissioned them for the covers of These Stones Remember and A Tale of Two Devotions, who else would I commission for the artwork for REanima but their talented self!
Shown above are the amazing cover they created for the story, with Saiziege on his coded bike (and what a bike!) taking Parlse to the only person in the looming shadow of The Wall who can fix her. And oh my god, the stunning portrait of CuprePaxi cradling little Parlse in his arms in the moments before he reanimates her (and yes, those are channels of copper embedded in his skin). There's a reason why that's such a beautiful and tender fatherly image, and if you've read the story you'll know what that reason is ;)
I adored Sabira's take on little Parlse as a copper golem, giving her that lovely serene porcelain doll style faceplate, as well as their incredible ability to make anything metallic look so realistic and gorgeous.
It was, as ever, a joy working with Sabira, and I cannot recommend their commissions highly enough. They will take your thoughts and ideas and turn them into something truly special and wonderful <3

Sausage: "I'm going to need a sample of your hole water…"
I can't anymore with this man xD
(Fun fact: I was at work with my earbuds in, listening to that on my phone as it happened, and I swear some of my colleagues must have wondered what the fuck I was grinning at.)

Some Copper King/Phantom Assassin thoughts
You never quite know with Pix whether something in his cinematics is deliberate or not. This moment, in particular, from the closing cinematic in Empires S1, Ep.21 appears to be one of the two main hints that we have of the Phantom Assassin being the Copper King:
Tumblr media
The Phantom is carrying the Copper King's shield bearing the banner of Pixandria in that opening shot looking down over Mythland as the sun sets. However, in the next shot, the shield is removed, once night has fallen:
Tumblr media
Shortly after that, the Phantom enters the Iron Wolf Tavern on his assassination mission, so he might have removed the shield to prevent his loyalties from being revealed... or Pix might have forgotten to remove it for the opening flyover and landing on that tall spire xD
Of note is the fact that the panning shot in that first image is the only time we see the Phantom Assassin using a shield at all, in any of the three cinematics that feature him (whereas the Copper King pretty much always uses one, since Pix himself is an inveterate shield-user).
We have other hints of the Phantom's possible true identity, such as these words from the Copper King toward the end of Ep.20:
"So, having made amends with these villagers - at least for now - part of me wants to go home, but part of me feels like I just can't show my face around Pixandria yet again. I don't know if I'm worthy to walk in the light of the Vigil. And so… I'm gonna spend a little bit of time away. I will still find ways of checking in on Pixandria and making sure its citizens are safe, but the Copper King cannot return. At least, not yet."
However, the Phantom's words at the start of Ep.20 ("I must do what the king could not. I must pay our debt. For the good of the empire.") suggest that either he is a different person, or that - if he is the Copper King in disguise - he feels such shame that he doesn't even feel he can claim the title of King (which he is still doing in other scenes around this time). And Pix is too much of a storyteller to not keep something like that 'straight' in his head.
That's kind of why I've decided to make them two separate people in A Tale of Two Devotions.

The opening scene of A Tale of Two Devotions...
... is directly inspired by the opening cinematic for Pix's Ep.20 of Empires Season 1:
youtube
Face smeared grey with hearthstone ash, Shevnah crept on silent feet through the moonlit streets of the desert city. Behind him, his six compatriots moved with equal stealth, keeping close to the pale sandstone walls and ducking behind carts and market stalls every time a nocturnal wanderer disturbed their progress, or a banner cracked in the warm night breeze and startled them.

The absolutely filthy little cackle that I just let out... xD
I mean, today's episode alone...
Sausage: "Are we doing hole duty?" Pix: "I said I need to go and get a cup of tea before I let you in my hole."
I hope that cushion's very soft. Anyway... what?

Hey there. Yeah, you <3
You feeling a bit 'meh' today? A bit down? A bit lethargic? A bit low?
Stand up (and if you can't stand up, then try to sit up) and watch the above. Do as much of that dance as you're able to do.
(You might also want to go somewhere private first, unless you don't mind people seeing you dancing and waving your arms around like a maniac xD)
Guaranteed: by the end of it you'll be breathless and probably giggling.
It never fails for me, and it worked its usual magic for me this evening, so I'm sharing it in case anyone else needs it.

About the AO3 "No Guest Comments for a while" warning
If you're not following any of AO3's social media accounts you might be in the dark as to what kind of "spam comments" have engendered this banner at the top of the site:
Tumblr media
These spam comments have been posted about a great deal on the AO3 subreddit for the past couple of days. Initially they comprised a bunch of guest (logged out users) bot comments that insulted authors by suggesting they were using AI and not writing their own fics. Some examples, from the subreddit:
Tumblr media
But it then escalated to outright graphic porn images and gifs being posted in comments, again by logged out 'Guest' accounts. Obviously, I'm not going to give examples of those, but between these two bot infestations, AO3 has clearly decided to act and has temporarily closed the ability to post comments for users who are not logged in with an AO3 account.
Unfortunately, this means that genuine readers who don't have an AO3 account won't be able to leave comments on fics that they enjoy.
If you are a genuine reader who doesn't yet have an AO3 account, I strongly suggest getting yourself on the waiting list for one. More and more AO3 authors are now locking their fics down to registered users only - either due to these bot comments or concerns about AI scraping their work - which means you're probably missing out on a lot of great stuff.
Hopefully guest commenting will be enabled again at some point soon, but I suggest not waiting until then. Get yourself on that list.
Wait times are going to be longer than usual at the moment, due to the current Wattpad purge [info on Fanlore | Wattpad subreddit thread], but if you're in line, then your invite will come through eventually.
Update: There's now a Megathread about this on the AO3 subreddit.
