Growing up isn’t always easy and it doesn’t stop, when you are 21 years old. You grow up your whole life, until you eventually see someone else growing up.

My father was once at this point, when I was born. He was in my current stage of life, probably thinking the exact same thing about my grandfather and him growing up.

Both of us grow older and I thought I would primarily find myself recognizing all the differences between my father and myself. I mean isn’t growing up about finding one’s own personal journey?

Yes, but at the same time looking back at the last 10 years, I now realise how much he has an impact on me. Seven years ago, he took me on a concert of his favourite musician Peter Gabriel. Back then, I didn’t actually listen to rock. It was just special, because he showed me the magic of a concert, the magic of feeling the music pervading your bones and your soul, the magic of watching a human musically sharing personal insights about this world. Not only I don’t want to miss concerts nowadays.

But now seven years later, I not only listen mainly to rock, but also fell in love with Peter Gabriel’s music. His music, which was given to me by my father, reflects on growing up, dealing with hard times and appreciating your loved ones. It feels like my father made a very special gift for me by showing me his passion about music.

I am so glad he is still around, but I know that one day he won’t. But I will continue to grow up, until my end. In this time, when he is not around anymore, I will be guided and guarded by him, reminding myself of all the love he gave to me - by listening to Peter Gabriel.

The decision to fight anxiety or an obsessive thought means to actually stop fighting against it. I had to deal with an enormous amount of fear for a long time. I have OCD and some hypochondriac/social anxiety. Over the years I adapted and learned how to cope with it. I found ways to get rid of these uncomfortable feelings. Reassuring, excessive thinking (compulsions) and avoiding risks as much as possible. I felt better. But this behavior turned out to be counterproductive. It conveyed me a feeling of safety, but it stayed only for a short amount of time. I like the usage of terms like rational / irrational to visualise it. Anxiety can be very irrational in its nature. There is a difference between the fear you get, when you stand in front of a wolf and the anxiety, when you think of the potential risk of getting a horrible disease. Maybe it’s hard to recognize the difference at first, but in fact there is a difference. If you then try to counter such an irrational fear with rational arguments and logic thinking, an originally irrational matter becomes rational for your mind. Personally, this interpretation helps me to remind myself that always craving for the ultimate safety might not be that helpful. I am still not at the point I want to be one day. Learning this is not a single decision, it’s daily practicing. But I already know it will be absolutely worth it and this pushes me forward.
