thinking about a foreign diplomat coming to Corona and learning about the company Rapunzel keeps. Like, her husband is one of the most infamous thieves in the region? Her best friend is the woman who almost destroyed Corona? The royal engineer almost killed the royal family?? Ruffians and thugs loitering around the castle???

I see so many people say New Dream is “toxic” because apparently Eugene has no character and does everything for Rapunzel. They say he’s in a toxic relationship where he isn’t respected by Rapunzel and has to worship the ground she walks on. I hate that. I don’t think that’s true at all.

Their relationship is the exact opposite of toxic. 

It’s a mutual partnership based out of equal parts trust and respect. Never once do you ever see them doubt how much the other loves them or express a lack of faith that the other will be true to them. They never have any of that “But what about ME? Don’t I matter?” or “Are you going to leave me for [new attractive person]” nonsense that a lot of shows try and force into romance plots. They don’t need to with New Dream because they are both confident in their relationship and that the other would never abandon them. And they never doubt the other’s skill or competence in anything they do. 

And any time there has been a misunderstanding, a small argument or miscommunication, they talked through it like adults and came to an understanding. They didn’t bottle it up until it exploded violently out of them. They didn’t have any forced “maybe we need some space” break up plots because that’s not what New Dream is. They share what they feel with one another because they feel 100% safe doing so with one another.  And even when they can’t come to a full understanding of what the other is going through, they still offered their trust and their patience until they figured it out. They WANT to understand each other. They make that effort to do so even when it’s difficult.

When one of them is in a position where someone new is doing something better than them- something they feel they have always been the best at- the other is there to comfort them and tell them their skills aren’t in question. That they still value them even if they need to let someone else take over for a while. They help each other get beyond ego and pride while still letting the other know how highly they think of them. It would have been so easy to write it as purely mean-spirited and having one be taken for granted while fawning over someone new- but that’s not what New Dream is.

And it’s never “Praise me! Tell me how good I am! Reassure me! Tell me I’m the best because I need the constant attention! If you’re not praising me it means you don’t love me!”. It comes naturally because they believe it’s true. It’s never forced. It’s not lip service. It’s never needy. It’s never manipulative. It’s not greedy. It’s not selfish.

They are each other’s confidant and best friend above all else. They’re a team. 

I can’t say the same for a lot of ships in fandom. Tangled or otherwise.
