after spending 29 hours thinking about a canon-ship scale for that poll, i decided i might as well spend another few hours looking through my old livejournal icons folder to rank the collection of ships i have written/am writing (for better or worse)...
Tumblr media
we lost so much when we stopped making those 100x100 pixel icons. where are the pretty tiny photos of artfully cropped couples with even tinier text on them. all we know now is the wasteland of youtube thumbnails on google image search. we used to be a society
decryption key:
same canon, never met on-screen: clone!sam/jack (sg-1) (i'm rounding up from 0.5 here since she's an open-source fanon OC, but you get me)
they interact on-screen: jack o'neill/elizabeth weir (sg-1/sga), b'elanna/kes (st: voy)
some charged interactions: daniel/fraiser (sg-1), troi/ro (st: tng), margaret/trapper (mash), hawkeye/trapper/margaret (mash)
important intimate relationship (not labeled romantic): sheppard/weir (sga), hawkeye/trapper (mash)
one-sided feelings in the text: janeway/chakotay (st: voy) (i will hang for this take i know), miles/keiko/kira (st: ds9), talia/garibaldi (b5) (not necessarily proud of this one but i filled sooooo many five-subject notebooks about them when i was a teenager)
they kiss but it doesn't count: hoshi/travis (st: ent), julian/jadzia (st: ds9), riker/ro (st: tng)
mutual feelings in the text (unresolved): doggett/reyes (x-files), picard/crusher (st: tng - 24th century edition only)
unresolved on-screen, word of god confirmed: sam/jack (sg-1), jake/diane (jake 2.0)
they get together on-screen: trip/t'pol (st: ent), julian/ezri (st: ds9), frank/margaret (mash)
they stay together (endgame): mulder/scully (x-files), riker/troi (st: tng), miles/keiko (st: ds9), berena (holby city - somehow??? i hear we won in the end?), chidi/eleanor (the good place), jason/janet (the good place)

Since I rewatched "Submersion" (initially to get a good tie in for a fic idea but failing because i misremembered something and my fic didn't make any sense anymore) I thought about why this is such a Teylabeth episode for me (I know it can be interpreted as any ship episode really but hear me out): I think it's the episode where Elizabeth and Teyla have *the* most time alone together, or at least where they have the most conversation between just the two of them.
I think "Suspicion" come closest, I'm currently not sure about "Echoes" (which I have also filed under "Teylabeth episode"), but I think it doesn't come as close, although they do have a few scenes there I believe.
I am not gonna cry about the wasted potential on Elizabeth&Teyla's relationship (platonic, romantic, whatever, just *any* relationship) but it's still a shame that it took almost until the end of season 3 (and the end of Torri Higginson's contract) for them to get THAT much time together.
Anyways, I still love the episode, I still think it's fantastic, I love that they brought this drilling station in there and the potential all that brings (there are crew quarters down there... the Ancients had this planned for like... longer utilization! i wonder what other stuff is still undiscovered on the bottom of the ocean of Lantea and in Pegasus in general), I love that Teyla got to use, and I mean *really* use her powers. She took on a freaking Wraith queen, okay? Nobody thought she could take it but she freaking did!
I love everyone being worried about her (especially Elizabeth ;), I love how defensive everyone is of everyone.
plus it's still one of the prettiest episodes we've got if you ask me

for ao3 wrapped:
3. What work are you most proud of (regardless of kudos/hits)?
17. Your favorite character to write this year?
18. The character that gave you the most trouble writing this year?
THANK YOUUU FOR THE ASK.
3. What work are you most proud of (regardless of kudos/hits)?
See your enemy (set during The Matrix Revolutions | Neo/Trinity, Trinity/Bane, Trinity + Smith | rated M).
This is a remix of sorts of a fic I wrote and published on the pit of voles in 2003, so it has the echoes of that outline and some actually good writing from that time plus an entirely revisioned sex scene and a better final bloody battle and aftermath with writing from 2022. As always, the fic is exorcizing a demon that Lana and Lilly gave me in 2003 with lizzen’s favorite trope of a villain kidnapping the heroine but the direction of the film's scene was always always disappointing to me. I still want to write the next phase of this fic, my post Resurrections Trinity and Groff!Smith adventure, because the relationship not explored enough is THE AGENT AND THE ONE THAT ALWAYS GOT AWAY FROM HIM. GODDDDDDDDDDDD i love them. It’s not precisely shippy in the way I’m a villainfucker, but it’s absolutely a fucked up intimacy and longing and hatred and twisted affection. They need to spitroast Neo together so badly okay. ANYWAY. I love this fic and I was pleased that it did resonate with a few. <3
17. Your favorite character to write this year?
Galadriel of the Noldor, daughter of the Golden House of Finarfin, commander of the Northern Armies under the High King Gil-Galad, future Lady of Lothlórien and the Lady of the Galadhrim, ringbearer and keeper of the White Ring of Adamant, Mistress of Magic, once called Artanis and  Nerwen and Alatáriel, a great sorceress and elf witch of terrible power, the chief adversary and obstacle to the dark lord.
I just think she’s neat.
I’m enjoying the journey we’re on together as I write Crave (set before the fall of Numenor | saurondriel | rated E | wip) as Sauron may be a tentacle monster in this fic but she is Charybdis and her hunger could swallow the entire sea.
18. The character that gave you the most trouble writing this year?
Galadriel, titles titles titles, because I want to do right by her. She’s this ancient powerful being who survives horrors and is a horror herself. I already love her and despair!!!!

lol I got triple tagged by @virtie333 @randomfoggytiger @katy-kt-katie 🫶🏻🫶🏻🫶🏻 the original post was getting long so I decided to make a new one👍🏻
idk if this counts since I just wrote it in my head while i was thinking about my next fic, but here you go:
She called out to him with increasing desperation, but her voice melted into the wind the moment it passed her lips.
wow that’s 21 words so i’m probably gonna tag some people who’ve already been tagged😅

20 questions for fic writers
tagged by @mylittleredgirl, who has been a good cheerleader friend for like 20 years now. That's wild.
1. How many works do you have on Ao3? 428.
2. What’s your total Ao3 word count? 2,852,289
3. What fandoms do you write for?
112 - Once Upon a Time (though not lately),
81 - Star Trek the Next Generation,
78 - Star Trek Discovery,
75 - Star Trek Voyager,
42 - Agents of SHIELD.
And many others. The forecast is for Discovery to take the top slot.
4. What are your top five fics by kudos?
Two really long (100k plus) Once Upon a Time babyfics, one Game of Thrones little what if one shot where Catelyn saves the book, one little femslashy Game of Thrones oneshot with really nice poetic language, and a Once Upon a Time Dragon Queen babyfic that might be one of the best things I've ever written.
(Write a really long fic in the most popular ship of a pretty big femslash fandom and one goes get a LOT of kudos).
5. Do you respond to comments?
I try. I get tired, I mean to respond. I forget, I get overwhelmed. I'm trying. I have... 2507 unread comments on Ao3 going back over 8 years. I'm not doing terribly well, but I try.
6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
When I the starry courses know Star Trek Voyager: Kathryn Janeway/Borg Queen.
Janeway sacrifices herself to the Borg to save her crew. It's pretty dark.
7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
Most of them? Without Knowing How, perhaps, because characters who were dead in canon wake up in an AU where they're married, happy, and have a baby, and they're really sweet in how they just roll with it. (Philippa Georgiou/Katrina Cornwell, Star Trek Discovery).
8. Do you get hate on fics?
not really...once someone wrote a fic about how much they hated a threesome I was writing (a few other people were them too, and it was fun). Once Upon a Time was a wild fandom. I did take it very personally at the time.
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
sometimes, I prefer foreplay and flirting and all the things that come after the smut. Smut does lead to babies sometimes though so...I have to write it. Sometmes I'm in the mood and sometimes I'm not.
10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written?
Stargate Atlantis and Star Trek the Next Generation, which was nice, all the characters are kind and thoughtful and the tech going back and forth was fun.
Hilariously that fic got linked on some forum about starships where they critiqued my starship combat.
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
I have not.
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
I have! There are a few on ao3.
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
A livejournal friend and I cowrote two Janeway/Chakotay fics, back in the day, and they were so fun. They're very soft.
I was Janeway, B'Elanna, Seven and Tuvok. She was Chakotay, Tom Paris, the Doctor and Harry Kim.
14. What’s your all time favorite ship?
Kathryn Janeway/Beverly Crusher probably? All time is hard. I'm much more of a "current time" person.
Currently it's Michael Burnham/Laira Rillak.
15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
I have the following WIPs
Universe Travelling 4 year old causes chaos and romance.
Michael rescues her sick girlfriend.
Quantum - (the baby's here, so...how do they go back to work...I need to reread the whole thing to make sure I have all the threads)
Michael gets pon farr.
The first two are for year of the OTP so I have until December 2024 to finish them. I like they, there's a good bit written of both, so that's likely.
Quantum owns my soul, so I will finish that, but it might be slow. I get distracted.
Pon Farr I am working on today! so I feel good.
16. What are your writing strengths?
long character arcs. Dialogue. Soft things with gentle emotions and slow plot.
Character goes on a long emotional journey while she is pregnant and then gives birth under unpredictable circumstances, while being loved and supported. is my thing. It could be on the tin containing my fic.
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
Description. I don't see things. I don't bother. My fics take place in a void where costumes and setting are barely mentioned.
I don't write intensity, or plot that moves quickly. I get distracted by world building and OCs.
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?
I don't do it. I usually write something about how "she said in Vulcan" or something. I speak some German, some Mandarin, I might try that if I have a native speaker to help me, but likely not.
19. First fandom you wrote for?
Star Trek the Next Generation!! I handwrote a self insert fic into my journal as a child. I think I was middle school aged.
I wrote a bunch of Sunset Beach on forums, then Star Trek the Next Geration, and one of my oldest internet published fics is on Ao3. That fic turns 23 this year.
20. Favorite fic you’ve written?
Ever ever?
Right this moment it's...migrations and other recurring phenomena because I keep rereading it and I like it.
Michael and Laira are trapped in a turbolift and they look after each other, then they flirt and make out and have sex and the desire to have sex is really well done.
Next time I do this meme it might be different, but right now. I really love that one.
(it also does not get enough love, it's good, dammit).
tagging @lonesomehighways, @moomkin77, @purlturtle, @sadmushroomgoblin, @concentfortea, @an-inky-fingered-lass, @thewitchofelpis, @lenfaz @liz-squids @divinemissem13 if you feel like it.

First Sentence Tag Game
Rules: Share the first lines of your ten most recent fics and tag ten people.
Many thanks to @thegreatbajoranschismof2369 for tagging me!!
My most recent fic is technically one I can't talk about publicly yet (still unrevealed in a fanwork exchange event), but here are the first sentences of the other nine, from most to least recent:
Erano accampate da tre giorni su di un lastrone di roccia, poco sotto il Passo Ratosha. (Sotto il Passo Ratosha) this is a Kira/Dax fic I wrote in Italian, in which Kira and Jadzia are camped in the Dahkur Hills, among Kira's recollections of the Resistance. I've been meaning to write an English version of it for months; this sentence can be read as “They'd been camped for three days on a rock sheet, just under the Ratosha Pass.”
There is something not quite right with B’Elanna. (Even when I'm not, I am) a B'Elanna/Seven fic + established B'Elanna/Harry/Tom, my take on the aftermath of the shared consciousness plot from the Voyager novel “String Theory - Cohesion” by Jeffrey Lang (the first chapter is a quote from said novel, so I'm not counting it for the meme).
2230 hours is a good time as any to leave Quark’s, Kira figures. (Mistaken for Strangers) The latest entry in my longstanding Kira/Cretak series of fic that I started five years ago (damn does the time pass). In this one, Kira and Cretak have a secret affair on the station, and Kira is reminded of her old resistance cell.
The doorbell chimes and B’Elanna shoots up from the couch, her body as tense as a compressed spring. (Doing The Unstuck) This is from the 4.5k of B'Elanna/Seven smut I wrote last December—I do love coming up with physics-related images eheh
B’Elanna wakes up with a start, heart-rate spiking as her conscious mind informs her that what she’s hearing is the klaxon of a yellow alert and she needs to get up, get dressed and be out of her quarters. (Let's go back, let's go back and start again) This is from my ongoing B'Elanna/Seven + B'Elanna&Harry time loop fic which... I haven't updated in months but I haven't forgotten it either, I promise!
Harry lifts his mug up to his nose, brows furrowing. (Projecting) A mostly humorous B'Elanna/Seven fic, in which B'Elanna is dared to ask Seven to go bouldering together... they get into climbing (and into each other) more than B'Elanna could ever imagine.
“Did anyone see you getting here?” (Reset) The first B'Elanna/Seven fic I ever posted on AO3! Loved getting to write Seven's POV here, and exploring the messiness inherent in such a (secret) relationship.
Ezri’s first attempt to talk to Seven of Nine had every right to be in Dax’s top ten most awkward experiences. (Patterns of Interference) This is an Ezri/Seven fic set at Starfleet Academy immediately post-Voyager canon, and the first line is pretty indicative of what happens in the fic lol. I loved exploring how these two characters would cope with endings and the messiness of seeing their own 'found families' slowly disintegrate in front of their eyes.
The crew scatters in Discovery’s hallways in small groups, laughter and chatter echoing behind them. (Possession) A Star Trek: Discovery Keyla/Joann fic, a sort of 'episode aftermath' of 3x04 “Forget Me Not”, about the way the Keyla can't seem to cope with failure.
I tag @nebulouscoffee @worflesbian @cordrazine-official @mylittleredgirl @bumblingbabooshka and anyone else who feels like doing this meme (tag me in it so I can see it in that case—but also no pressure whatsoever about doing this!)

I've never seen anyone else who thinks that Mulder is demisexual and I just wanted to say hey!!!! ME TOO! thank you for validating my long held opinion!
Ahhhh! So nice to meet a fellow Mulder demisexual truther!
Some time ago, @mylittleredgirl made a post about asexual Mulder, and I felt like I’d seen the truth. (I can’t find the post because, well, Tumblr’s search function…) It just made so much sense to me. His relationships with Phoebe and Diana… how he is with Scully. The phone sex… it just all clicked into place.

Last night you tagged something about a diplomatic incident with Romania and I kind of want to know about that.
this is definitely a partial story because my information on this was obtained at the dinner table like twenty years ago and i have not independently verified it with historical research (my historical knowledge of the cold war era is also like twenty years old), but i can tell you what i remember!
at the risk of doxing myself for those willing to deep-dive into international canadian politics from the 1970s, my parents were both classical musicians in the era where canada was working Very Hard to promote and celebrate canadian arts. my parents were part of a chamber music group that sometimes traveled internationally with the canadian diplomatic corps. this was during an era of the canadians breaking a little bit with the united states' hardline cold war approach and making diplomatic inroads with communist countries.
so, sometimes they got to play concerts in the eastern bloc and other communist nations, traveling with diplomats (or at least escorted by diplomatic envoys??). at the time of this story, they were touring in romania. part of their shtick when they played in non-english-speaking countries was that one of the musicians (not one of my parents - i think it was the clarinetist) would learn a few phrases in the local language from their diplomatic escorts to say to the crowd before they played. hello, we are [music group] bringing best regards from canada to your fine country, hope you enjoy the show kind of thing.
but this night in romania -- probably specifically in transylvania, given what happens next -- my dad says right before the show that he wants to do the spiel, and the clarinetist is like ok fine i guess? so they go out on stage, and my dad starts saying hello, we are X music group bringing goodwill from canada to romania, etc.
before the end of the sentence, the crowd goes fucking NUTS. like completely wild. screaming and cheering for like fifteen-twenty minutes. nobody on stage understands what's happening, but my dad is like ok cool and keeps talking -- nothing especially problematic or anything, just "the country is so beautiful here" kind of stuff, because my dad is a showman and the crowd is going bananas and they haven't even played a single note. i don't know if the diplomatic escorts had to shut the concert down right there on stage or just clean it up afterwards, but this is a PROBLEM.
see, the reason my dad volunteered to introduce them to the crowd and was able to keep talking is because he was in the bathroom before the show and heard some people speaking hungarian. my dad speaks hungarian, because his mother was from hungary and he grew up in one of those ashkenazi families where every person at the dinner table speaks a different language.
the problem here is that speaking hungarian on stage in romania in the 1970s is kind of a seditious act, and for representatives of a foreign nation to speak hungarian in a DIPLOMATIC CONTEXT was a huge fuck you to the ruling government of romania, which at the time was engaged in a policy of romanianization: using pretty heavy-handed political means of assimilating ethnic minorities in romania. the crowd is going wild because this looks like canada is giving official support to hungarian minority interests in romania.
i genuinely don't know what happened after this, but i imagine my dad was not allowed to speak on-stage again. which did not prevent him from causing other problems, because i remember my mom telling me that at some point my dad snuck out of the hotel to go and meet with / get some kind of smuggled note or something??? / from a soviet musician who was trying to escape to the west, because my dad can't resist ~intrigue~. she also told me that a romanian diplomatic function was one of only two times in her life that she saw my dad get roaring drunk -- entirely by accident. i don't know if those two incidents were related.
update: an anon from transylvania provided some broader historical context

7, 17, and 18 for the fic asks :}}
7. What’s a troupe you love to write?
I am such a sucker for sickfic, and emotional hurt/comfort (heavier on the comfort). As previously mentioned, so much literal sleeping together fics here, which kind of combines the two, I guess.
17. Are there any writers and/of stories that you consider an influence?
I guess, for this to be distinct from the next question, we're talking published works? I am convinced the greatest influence on my own writing was Scott Westerfeld's Uglies series, though it's probably more apparent in my original stuff (especially when I do sci-fi). I've had my writing style compared to Maggie Stiefvater more than once, which is probably the highest honor I can conceive of. And I think maybe some of my more lyrical narration (which I use most in writing introspective angst, not entirely sure why) is perhaps traceable to Lauren DeStefano's style in her Chemical Garden series.
18. Recommend someone else fic! (And tag them if they have a tumblr!)
I feel a little awkward/a bother about tagging for this, but as many people as possible should definitely read @mylittleredgirl 's Sparky fics (characterization and humor are always chef's kiss) and @astridcontramundum 's Endeavour AUs (intricate plots that always manage to reveal something new to me about canon as well)! If I have to pick just one of each (impossible choice), I'm going with Into White (Stargate Atlantis), the perfect Elizabeth lives fix-it that I have accepted into my heart as replacement canon, and Ask Me No More (Endeavour), an expansive AU that delightfully expands on all the spy drama of Quartet.

I got tagged by @carsonsweebabyturtles for this like 2 months ago; sorry for taking so long. Since it’s 8 shows get to know me better, I’m excluding the 3 Star franchises & Power Rangers, because if you’ve been following me for more than a week you know about them. Also it means I don’t have to pick a favorite.
1: Pokémon Sun and Moon, because it was my comfort show during 2020 and got me way back into the Pokémon fandom, way further in than I was as a tween/teen.
2: Wishbone, because this PBS show was genuinely formative for kid!me. They got impressively creative with the concept, which could have so easily fallen flat in the wrong hands.
3: Phineas and Ferb, not just for being a bright & bubbly show, but for being a masterclass in reminding me it’s how tropes are used that makes for a great story.
4: I have my many issues with BBC’s Merlin, but I can’t stay mad at it because it gave the world Angel Coulby’s Gwen.
5: Look, is the Dinotopia TV show particularly good, either on its own merits or as an adaptation? Eh. But it was also formative for kid!me so I have a soft spot for it.
6: I love Avatar: The Last Airbender cartoon for so many reasons. The characters, the animation, the humor, the storylines, the world-building, and just… how much care went into it.
7: It’s been a long time since I’ve seen the later seasons, but I do love Jackie Chan Adventures. I know the first 2 seasons have held up all right. Honestly, Uncle is one of my all-time favorite characters like Gwen is, despite their very different personalities.
8: Since it first premiered on ABC (I know because I watched it that night) and because I’ve watched it enough times to be the length of a TV season, I am going to count the 2022 BATB 30th Celebration special. Look, I haven’t bothered to analyze why it has a grip on me, I’ve just been enjoying mentally going ‘wheee’ whenever I remember it exists on a daily basis, let alone when I rewatch it. It makes me happy. ^_^
No pressure tagging @magic-owl @mylittleredgirl @asokatanos @ladytharen @bex-pendragon @fantasysci5 @jadelotusflower and anybody else who wants to!

I need the fic where Batman responds to the Red Hood exactly like a parent with a rebellious teenager.  he looms out of the shadows to admonish Hood for stealing Black Mask’s kryptonite.  he confiscates the rocket launcher.  he grounds Jason for releasing the Joker.
the GCPD, watching the most notorious crime lord in the city get scolded by Batman: what is even happening Hood: YOU’RE NOT MY REAL FATHER Batman: the paperwork disagrees.  also, you blow up one more warehouse and no more Alfred cookies. Hood, whining: but I had to blow it up, it was full of drugs!  and drug dealers!  mainly the drug dealers. Batman, shaking Hood like an errant kitten: murder bad.

okay, imagine everyone gets the Robins mixed up.  look, it’s hard, their color themes are all too similar, two of them have ‘red’ in their name and two of them have ‘robin’ in their name, and apparently one of them was a girl, and honestly this is too much background reading to be a goon.  and it doesn’t really matter if you get their names mixed up, because it will inevitably end with you beaten unconscious and ziptied to a telephone pole.  can’t keep things straight with a concussion anyway.
so, fic where a random group of thugs decides to kidnap a Robin and sell them off to their nemesis.  only they get the Robins wrong.  every time.
Hood squints up at Deathstroke.  Deathstroke stares down at him.  “in which universe does this look like Nightwing to you?”  “he’s got wings on his chest!”  “that’s a bat, you moron.”  “oh, uh--wait, where are you going?”  “you managed to snag the one Bat that’s not opposed to killing, and I’m not going to sit around here and wait while he blows this warehouse up.”  “but we searched him--urk!”  the warehouse explodes when Deathstroke is two blocks away.
Red Robin groans and pulls himself off the floor of the warehouse.  Black Mask makes a hissed growl.  “you got the wrong Red, you utter moron!”  “s-sorry, but you said--”  “I gave you a very clear description!  I said red helmet!  does this idiot look like he has a red helmet to you?”  Red Robin yawns, politely covering his mouth.  none of the goons notice that his hands are free.  “what am I supposed to do with this skinny-ass creativity-challenged kid, huh?”  snick of a bo staff extending.  “oh,” Red Robin smiles, “I have a few ideas.”  screams.
Spoiler stares unblinking.  Ra’s al Ghul stares back, also unblinking.  the cave glitters with green light.  there is a marble chessboard between them.  “would you like a game?”  “sure, sounds like fun!”  both of them ignore the screams of the hapless goons in the background.
Robin snarls like a vengeful rattlesnake, trussed up with a giant bow on his head.  Cluemaster fights the urge to break something.  “I’m sorry, but which one of you idiots identified this kid as my daughter?”  “I--we--um--”  “he’s the wrong age, gender, race--”  “we didn’t want to assume!”  “aw, how progressive of you!”  everyone looks up.  Nightwing is perched there, smiling.  Batman is perched there, not smiling.  “oh shit--”
Deathstroke stares upward, as though searching for patience.  “you called me here, wasting my considerably expensive time, to tell me that you have Robin.”  “yessir.”  “why do you think I give a flying fuck about Robin?”  “you--you hate the Teen Titans, right?”  “that was ten years ago--you know what, fuck it, fine, show me the kid.”  the goons haul in Nightwing.  Deathstroke stares, and then smiles.  “well, what do you know, you idiots finally managed to get your Robins right.”  the goons perk up.  “so you’ll buy him?”  Deathstroke unsheathes his sword.
“oh, I didn’t say that.”

Bruce isn’t the one with a crippling desire to adopt any black-haired child thrust in front of him.  no, that’s one hundred percent his children’s fault.
(or, elder batkid holding younger soon-to-be batkid like simba in lion king: “adopt him, or I will.”)
Nightwing finds Jason stealing the Batmobile’s tires.  he’s amused.  he finds out that Jason doesn’t have a family and he makes the puppy dog eyes at Batman, the ones he knows Bruce can’t resist.  Batman tries to stay strong.  Nightwing uses his secret weapon and informs Bruce that if he doesn’t take Jason in, Dick will.  Bruce folds like a bad hand (he can’t have grandchildren at this young) and tries to console himself that it’s just this once.
(we all know that’s a lie.)
Red Hood does his whole showdown at the Tower.  in the process of insults being bandied about, he finds out that Tim has not yet been adopted by Bruce.  Jason is affronted.  outraged, even.  this whole showdown loses half the emotional punch if Tim hasn’t been adopted.  Jason didn’t come here to beat up some random kid wearing Robin colors!  Batman is extremely surprised to see Gotham’s latest crime lord appear in front of him with a growled ultimatum and a bruised Robin dangling from his grip like a scruffed kitten.  Batman doesn’t know why Hood’s threatening to adopt Robin, but of course he can’t let his son Tim be kidnapped.  it’s only when he’s filing the papers that he realizes why it sounded so familiar, and Jason is trying to reschedule his showdown with Robin when he’s attacked by a weepy Batman.
(Bruce is starting to wonder about his children and their propensity for adoption.)
Tim gets attacked in the Cave by a ninja with a sword.  a very small ninja who proclaims himself the Son of the Bat.  Tim is beyond excited, this is his chance to adopt someone into the family.  Tim presents Bruce with a hogtied Damian and chirps the line at him, beaming.  Bruce blinks at him.  (“Tim, you’re bleeding.”  “tis but a flesh wound.”  *muffled shouting*  “oh, apparently it’s poisoned, but I feel fine.”  “TIM--”)  Damian is none too pleased by Tim’s claim--“I have no need of your ridiculous threats, I am Father’s rightful heir!”--but is secretly happy to be assured of a place in this strange tradition.
(“No, stop laughing Clark, this is a real problem, Damian tried to get me to adopt Jon the other day--I said stop laughing--”)

okay so one of those ‘take a canon scene and see how it works in fanon batfam’ ideas.  in this case, the Batman v Red Hood fight, you know the one, yes that one where Bruce beats the everloving shit out of a Jason that’s not fighting back.
how do you make this work in batfam, you ask?  well 😈.
Jason needs connections in the underworld for some case.  problem is, Hood’s been an antihero for a good long while now, and most people consider him a Bat.  Jason’s solution is simple--stage a confrontation so public and so egregious that the entirety of Gotham knows he’s not a Bat anymore.
and whaddya know?  Batman’s the only Bat in Gotham at the moment.  Steph’s visiting Cass in Hong Kong, Tim’s in San Francisco, Damian’s spending the month in Bludhaven with Nightwing, it couldn’t be easier.  Jason just has to convince Bruce of this plan and they’re good to go!
(Jason does a whole monologue to try and convince Bruce, ending on the ultimatum, “if you don’t help me, I’ll find someone who will!”  Bruce panics.  he’d rather have Jason plot a fake confrontation with him than go fight-flirt with Black Mask.  one villain son-in-law is more than enough.)
it’s a whole production.  Jason writes scene directions.  there’s fake blood.  a dramatic monologue.  Batman tears the red bat off his chest.  the kind of shit that Gothamites would eat up.  by the end of this fight, no one in Gotham will think Red Hood is a Bat.
the plan goes off really, really well.
until it doesn’t.
what Jason maybe hasn’t considered is the vast plethora of people who love him, who would drop everything and come running to save him, and who’ve watched a bunch of footage of Batman beating the shit out of him.  while Jason is completely off grid and unable to answer any calls.
Jason returns to the Cave to update Bruce that he found the intel he was looking for, only to find him being held at swordpoint by Talia al Ghul while a furious and weepy Dick demands to know why he did it.  the rest of the family stand in silent judgment.
the Cave: *crickets* Bruce, pointing at Jason: it was his idea

My #1 post of 2022
on a more cracky note: Bruce getting possessed by something.  it details how it’s going to completely ruin his life, bit by bit, inch by inch, and no one will ever ever know because Bruce exclusively communicates in grunts anyway.
Bruce freaking out, trapped in the back of his head, forced to watch as the entity interacts with his family with no one seemingly the wiser.
in reality, everyone immediately cottoned onto the fact that Bruce is acting weird and they’re all exchanging theories and solutions in the background and Bruce is unpossessed by dinner.
Dick: it got the tone of your hns wrong, it was more of a space is the absolute worst I hate it hn when it should’ve been a this city stinks like garbage hn.
Jason: you didn’t look constipated when you saw me shoot someone.
Tim: you only double-checked the mission info six times.
Cass: moved weird.
Steph: you didn’t make that eyebrow crinkle when I cracked a joke like you’re trying to be stern but inside you’re laughing because we all know I’m hilarious.
Damian: as if I don’t regularly check you all for possession, tt.
Alfred: I know everything, Master Bruce.

20 questions for fic writers
thank you, @mylittleredgirl for tagging me! Have I done this...perhaps. Will do it again! It might also be new? the questions are fun.
1. How many works do you have on ao3?
423
2. What’s your total ao3 word count?
2,817,922 (hitting 3 million should be fun). I average 6661 words (ha) per fic. Which is interesting. I have 43 drabbles and 7 fics over 100,000 words so they must even out.
3. What fandoms do you write for?
Once Upon a Time (though not for years). Star Trek the Next Generation, Star Trek Voyager, Star Trek Discovery. Stargate Atlantis and Agents of SHIELD. many other things, but not a lot of fics. (12 or less).
4. What are your top five fics by kudos?
Stray Feathers and Scales (Emma Swan/Regina Mills, Once Upon a Time) I almost listed this one as Maleficent/Regina, which it isn't..kind of is, could have been poly if I'd thought about). This fic has HUGE stats for me and I haven't reread it in years. Parts of it are really detailed though, and it's VERY me. It's all the tropes.
Lost Leaves of Autumn (Catelyn Stark/Ned Stark, Game of Thrones) This one is very soft and doesn't really belong in the GoT universe, which is so brutal, but I really love Catelyn.
Thawing Deep (Sansa Stark/Margaery Tyrell, Game of Thrones). They could have worked! I haven't read this one in ages either.
Her Majesty's Mercy (Maleficent/Regina Mills, Once Upon a Time) The best Once fic I wrote, in my opinion. I remember the fun of writing this one.
A Funny Thing Happened at a Stark Tower Gala (Melinda May/Phil Coulson, Agents of SHIELD). Maybe this got recced somewhere? Maybe AoS fandom was just big that year? It's cute and fun, and for some reason has a bunch of kudos.
(this is long)
5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
I try to? If it's a fic that I'm really into I'll reply. I'm kind of giddy about comments on the ones I'm writing right now. If it's an older one that I am sentimental for I try to reply. If I'm not into it at the moment (I am kind of burnt out on Once Upon a Time, and I haven't been into Chakotay lately so I've been kind of meh on my own Janeway/Chakotay stuff). I try to, but I am fickle.
I did just have this really positive experience where I posted my chapter of Quantum Variations (which is my long Disco WIP) and the chapter was kind of a mess, but I was so happy to post it, I really didn't care) and people found things for me to fix and were really kind about it. It felt good, for a chapter with a bunch of errors.
6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
I killed Elizabeth Weir once, but she came back, so the ending was pretty hopeful. I don't write much angst without a happy ending.
I have Janeway rather self-destructively run off with the Borg Queen but... uh...it wasn't that angsty. Dark, but she kind of wanted it.
There's probably something really angsty I'm just not thinking of, but I don't reread my really old stuff often. (some of them I honestly have no idea what the fic is about).
7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
there's a really sappy SGA one where they have a bunch of kids.
Firefly (Star Trek Discovery, Philippa and...learning to have feelings). maybe? Considering how messy Philippa's feelings are, she ends up happy, and more human, and she goes on a very long journey about it.
8. Do you get hate on fic?
Not lately. I did, I have, but it's been years. Once Upon a Time fandom you were a wild ride.
I did make massive drama back in the day with Janeway/Crusher, because I really wanted to get to play with them in the fandom space I was in, but that was not the space for that.
9. Do you write smut?
Sometimes! I'm on a somewhat lazy sort of fade to feelings place at the moment. I wrote a somewhat detailed one awhile back, but it was pretty tame. The fic is good though! I really like that one. Trapped in a turbolift and then later they have sex.
Migrations and other recurring phenomena (Star Trek Discovery, Michael Burnham/Laira Rillak). Happy Birthday, madame captain...
10. Do you write crossovers?
Not often, I do have a SGA and TNG crossover where the Enterprise turns up at Atlantis, which is odd but fun, and for some reason (there's a space battle) it got outside my usual audience. I really liked the challenge of all the characters meeting each other.
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Not that I recall.
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
Yes! I think a OUAT one? maybe two? It has happens but...I don't remember which fic it is.
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
Yes! Jackie and I wrote two really long ones together (which were a blast). I don't think she's still on tumblr but, @shinewithalltheuntold, I love you).
14. What’s your all-time favourite ship?
I am really into whatever I am really into at the moment, because I get REALLY into things.
Right now it's Michael Burnham/Laira Rillak, underappreciated ship of my dreams. Michael gets to date the president of the Federation, as a treat. fun bonsu for me is that they have scenes together! and a relationship arc and that's really fun. (even if it's not romantic, it's something and I adore them, so I'll take it).
All time ever? Kathryn Janeway/Beverly Crusher, which made drama, ruined some of my fandom relationships, but really gave me something I needed.
15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but probably won’t?
I have a few that I just ended, which I'm okay with. I've taken longer hiatuses than I'd like, lately. (life's just been a lot).
I have three right now. Only one is posted and I'll finish that one! (Quantum Variations on a Love Theme (Star Trek Discovery, Michael Burnham/Laira Rillak) is my favorite. It's my heart right now. It's long and it's sometimes hard to write and there's backstory and plot threads BUT I love it.
And it has it's own little following and really that's all a really long fic needs: a handful of people who read it.
The other two I need for Year of the OTP so I should get those done too. (Firefly universe crosses over into canon-adjacent universe and Michael rescues sick Laira fic).
Hopefully they all get finished. (I'm fairly certain they will. I am not answering the question well).
16. What are your writing strengths?
Dialogue. Soft feelings. Incremental character growth. Long, slow, introspective character journeys. Friendship and found family moments. (there are some Tilly and Philippa moments I really like in Firefly, and Tilly and Laira and Tilly and Michael and...people having loving conversations is fun).
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
Description. (I feel like I'm really lazy with this most of the time. They're there, you know what they look like).
Urgency. (my fics do not move quickly, or really with a lot of certainty in their direction).
Plot. (frequently feels like an afterthought so people can have feelings).
Focus? I drop plot threads, all the time.
Writing by myself is hard. I ALWAYS want to show whatever I've just done to a person and sometimes people are busy and I am so unmoored by that. (post it anyway, dammit). I adore having someone tell me it's good before I post it.Sometimes I have to post it anyway...
I also write the thing I want to write, over and over in different fandoms and with different a characters and I've written my own variations on "pregnant person goes on a journey with her feelings and grows as a person" at least 10 times.
and I'll do it again.
And I love midly sick character, which I will do again.
I feel bad and don't feel bad? It's what I want to read so I have to write it so I can read it.
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?
I google translate, or skip around it, or switch POV so I don't have to deal with it. It's hard to do and I can usually avoid it. I use a lot of fantasy name/word generator for alien words.
It's mostly [alien name goes here] and hopefully I put something in.
I borrow words (or spelling conventions) from languages I know little pieces of (Finnish, German, Welsh) when I need to for alien things.
19. First fandom you wrote for?
Star Trek the Next Generation. (Stranded, Beverly Crusher/Jean-Luc Picard, Will Riker/Deanna Troi, adorable future children who are lesbians). One of my oldest fics is ON Ao3! it is like 22 years old I think? it's a mess and I should fix the formatting but it's SO LONG... It's fine. It's there. It's really not bad for my first long fic.
It's fun to see how far I've come. I wrote that one so long ago that I wrote it under my real name on a usergroup. Then posted it on my own website that I made with html on geoctities.
20. Favourite fic you’ve written?
Whatever I'm working on right now is usually my favorite. I have fics I am especially fond of.
Her Majesty's Mercy. (Once Upon a Time, Regina Mills/Maleficent) one of the darker things I've written for them, that has a very happy ending it's just...kind of all raw messy feelings)
When I the Starry Courses Know. (Star Trek Voyager: Kathryn Janeway/Borg Queen) very depressed Janeway gives herself up to the Borg Queen, which kind of a Faustian twist to it. It's one of the better things I've ever written).
Fedvision (the Federation does eurovision, with Beverly Crusher/Kathryn Janeway and most of Voyager and TNG at their party). Fedvision is wonderful I should write it again, because it should happen every year. (Disco needs it). This fic is full of bubbly happiness and hats and love. It's full of love.
Firefly (Star Trek Discovery: Mirror Philippa Georgiou and Michael Burnham, and feelings, and learning to trust people). I used to live in a state of angst waiting for someone to comment when I posted...this fic has chapters without any comments at all. I had never written anything this long that didn't depend on a romantic pairing, this one doesn't have one in the center. I took huge break...and came back! I didn't have a beta or an alpha and I lost friends in the time it took to write it, and it still turned out. I grew as a writer and poster with this fic.
Quantum Variations on a Love Theme (Star Trek Discovery: Michael Burnham/Laira Rillak) is my favourite right now, because it's a me fic. It's a long meandering jellyfish fic and Laira's pregnant and I love it. It's the most fun I could have. It has really good parts. (not all of them but, there are some stellar bits). Also it has some detailed world building, and that's fun. This is the me fic that owns my soul at the moment so of course it's my favourite.
I'll just have five...
Tagging @aleksandrachaev @that-one-curly-haired-chick @purlturtle, @winternightjewels @regionalpancake @galactic-pirates @jackabelle73 @holdouttrout (if you fancy it)
and you, if you feel like it, person who made it all the way to the bottom!

welcome to the sudden hard spiral that is Stumbling Into John/Monica Without Warning 😂 they're so very pretty together and they CARE ABOUT EACH OTHER and yeah they absolutely need to be together
@mylittleredgirl more or less tricked me into discovering this ship and I am so very, very grateful
Thank you so much for the welcome, great fics and all the recs! I am so glad to find you, @mylittleredgirl and @theycannotfindmenow to help me in my journey as I stumbled across this ship twenty years too late. But man, they just suck you in with their history, shared looks and one step forward/two steps back antics (you know Monica totally fell first. I watched 4-D!). Its a lot but I love it.
Thank goodness for Monica and John in s9, I tell ya. They are such bright spots in the darkest of days.
