I FINISHED CHAPTER 11. *the final countdown starts playing in the back*

Nibel Region is beautiful. But lets talk story first.

Was eagerly awaiting meeting Vincent. The way there was painful tho. Listen: I love Cait Sith okay. Love his gameplay, his voice, his character. What they shouldn't have done is put him solo for most parts of this chapter, my patience was tested many a time during the whole manor. Hated the Abjudicator enemies. Did not have the patience when meeting them for the first time - i changed Cait's equipment like at least 5 times and then still died over and over again with just him in the party. Eventually did it the next day after a few tries. The Yin and Yang guy was also annoying the first few times - as I said, I was eagerly awaiting Vincent and the game just kept throwing annoying enemies at me 😭

Same with the puzzles. Took me very long to figure out how to use the throwing system with the boxes. Still struggled a lot after. THE ONE PART WHERE YOU HAVE TO HIT THE MOVING THING???? I was actually going insane. Was getting very frustrated and hated myself for it. I usually like the puzzles in Rebirth, but this section felt too long... Couldn't enjoy most of it. Did like the other boss fights tho. The abandoned experiment felt way too easy but ig I'm at the point of the game where all party members have a decent build so I feel like story bosses up until now have been quite alright to tackle. (Besides a few exceptions like Scarlet)

Vincent was very cool, what can I say. Took a billion screenshots (pictured below). Love how he went all out just bc Cloud touched his coffin... edgy ass. Him and Cait were somehow cute... we love us some coworkers.

Also poor Roche :( his fight was fun but I did see this coming. Had me thinking about Broden from Kalm, hope he is doing alright. I really can't wait to find out the whole story of the cloaked men... i remember in the first game I briefly thought Genesis might be one of them 😭 hope we get to see him during the last game maybe.

Other than that no other thoughts about the story this chapter... just Vincent. I'm just a girl what can I say.

Exploration wise I'm like halfway through Nibel. Took me a little bit to figure put how to get the dang chocobo (I thought we were supposes to distract the other ones, not bait the main one...) but their ability is SO FUN. Water feet farts.

Tried to beat Thorin several times but I couldn't do it even at lowest difficulty 😭 made it only as far as phase 2 where he splits the arena... idk if I'll succeed in getting him ngl.

Other than that I haven't done fiend intel, protorelic or npc quests (besides accidentally starting the one with the chocobo sage bc I stumbled across the farm). Looking forward to it all tho! Then it's time to tackle the last few chapters and then I can finally catch up with hsr ...

i'll start from the very beginning, of course. and oh, do a lot of things make me unwell here.

charon

first of all, is the way winston was expecting that gun to stay on him. he was, if reason failed, ready to "such is life" his way to the grave. he does in fact tell charon, as they enter the office, that he shouldn't be here for this, that he shouldn't watch him get executed for his mistakes. but charon, of course, stays, bless his soul and his loyalty and everything about him (but i'll get to him on the multi, let's not digress).

the point here is: he doesn't let him fall. he goes down with him. he cradles his head!!! it's an awfully intimate and caring gesture. in the movie he kneels down after, when the marquis is leaving (it makes sense why, logistically). and don't get me wrong, i love that version too. winston staying still until the very last moment, not baring (almost) any reaction. but there's something so gentle about the script version that has such a grip on me. he keeps holding him, he takes his hand and tells him to rest. openly calls him friend, too. it gives me the impression that i'm intruding on something very private here, almost as if i should be looking the other way.

and here it is. the hotel is one thing.. still a blow, still hits right to the heart, to the very core of who he is, but charon? charon is unforgivable. in killing him to supposedly teach him a lesson the marquis has signed his own death. of course he can't kill him directly, he's smarter than that, but he will find a way (and he will indeed).

yes, winston is smart. yes, he plans ahead. but this little, crucial detail, slipped away from him. i think that, ideally, winston would keep himself off from the line of fire, from exposing himself to such a risk. i love this, so much: he doesn't know everything, he can't possibly account for every single variable there is.

and the same thing could be said for the rooftop scene in parabellum. i've seen people theorize that he knew exactly where john would fall so he wouldn't die. and i.. personally don't agree with that. it takes away the fact, painful as it is, that john's survival was not his end goal there. a nice strike of luck, surely, since he didn't want john dead, but that was also not the point. his main objective was to not have the hotel and everything else that comes with it stripped from him. and with it, a chance, at least that, of john living to see another day. but not a certainty. and it does work well for him in the end, albeit temporarily: the abjudicator has seen him shoot. not once, not twice, but five times (yes, i counted them, leave me alone). so even if john walks away, she can't say winston didn't try to kill him. she doesn't believe him, i do think, but she has no choice but to walk away.

if you listen really well, you can hear me chew on forniture. this truly is the culmination of their almost but not quite father-son relationship (also no, i don't think they're actually father and son. or blood related in any other way). the fact that winston only ever refers to john as "son" at his grave, when john can't possibly hear him, after having buried him, much like a father would, is so tragically beautiful to me. and it leads me to believe that 1) he might not have wanted it between them, spoken out loud, not wishing to become another rope around john's neck, yet another thing between him and freedom. sure, he helped him along the way, best he could. he was — and the continental as a whole — i think, a stable and fixed point in his life, someone and somewhere he could always turn to. 2) he possibly also didn't see it that way until then, not so surely at least to admit to it. to empty air and a gravestone, but still.

Something I’ve been thinking about a lot is with their code names.

King is simple. Marius is the current CEO and Pax owns... a lot. 

Libra is another easy one-- it has the symbol of the Scales which leads to Justice and Artem is a lawyer.

Even Abjudicator isn’t too far off. It’s essentially a formal judging and with Vyn being a psychiatrist, it also goes a bit hand and hand in a way.  

Rosa as well, the MC is referenced multiple times with Roses and the two of her most prominent colors are the red of her jacket and green of her eyes. 

But I can’t really get a handle on Raven? Most that initially came to mind are more on Crows than Ravens, but they do apparently overlap-- it’s possible it’s just the usual common bird names for secret agents and he often worked at night or maybe do to how he could call Peanut... Ravens are one of  the most intelligent birds though which I would also put another reason as to why along with their innate puzzle solving. 

Not to mention this: “ravens are one of only four known animals (the others being bees, ants, and humans) who have demonstrated displacement, the capacity to communicate about objects or events that are distant in space or time.” and Luke constantly brings up the past (for obvious reasons). 

Anyway this was all to say I think they fit nicely.

Headcanon - Despite his supposed obliviousness or denial to the “degeneration” of Kyros’ laws toward dictatorship, he was self aware enough to be the one to institute the role of Fatebinder of Balance, hoping it would act as a safeguard or reminder that would kick him back to the right track in case of misconduct (he did not however anticipate how his subordinates might just be more loyal to him and how loyal he himself could be to Kyros despite the law)

Heartcanon - He was a little rowdy punk as a kid, going more of a “fuck the law if the law isn’t just” morale. This did not sit well with the authorities and after a particular bout of misbehavig he got put to work as a helper to a scribe who also happened to work as record keeper for the local court. He was a smart kid, and with too many hours to spend on scrolls and books it did not take long for him to realize that the best way to cheat the system was to play the system. 

Junkcanon - He was preeetty old when Kyros actually arrived to conquer his homeland. He’d done his good time but he had such a valid and solid reputation, that it would have been a waste in Kyros’ eyes to just not have him work for her. Now, this is the time where he was most exposed to the masses and the suggestive power really started working it’s magic, as people saw his mask they associated his face with it and he sloowly stopped aging... and then he got younger... and younger...and it really is a shame that the black smoke took hot dad Tunon away from us but to be honest the smoke is kinda hot too.
