Persephone in Disney’s “Hercules”
After doing my write-up on “Jasper in Deadland”, which doesn’t actually have the myth of Persephone in it but does have her and Hades as characters, I found myself thinking, ‘why don’t I do more write-ups about media that has Persephone in it even if her myth isn’t directly addressed?’ And once I had that thought, I decided I should talk about Disney’s “Hercules,” which is probably just as famous for its portrayal of Hades as it is for literally anything else about it.
I think anyone’s automatic thought when I say Persephone in Disney’s “Hercules” is that she’s not actually in the movie at all and that’s not actually correct.

I’m not crazy about her design but it’s not the worst thing. Why is she so blonde when most of the other gods seem to be more monochromatic (and as I’ve said before I’m not into blonde Persephone)? In fact, her lack of monochrome makes me wonder if they might have intended other things for her since the gods who aren’t mostly one color in general have more importance in the narrative. Also her earrings are probably supposed to be leaves but they look more like feathers to me. 
Persephone is only in the background of the pantheon scenes with her standing next to her mother in the opening scene and being one of the gods to crowd around Hercules at the end. So what is there to talk about? That. The fact that she is there and the fact that she is only in the background. This is important. In some stories this would be a minor detail that just shows that someone did their homework, but in this story where Hades is the main villain and easily the most memorable character, there’s a discussion to be had.
Before I get into depth about the villain aspect, I want to point out the fact that villains of the Disney Renaissance era are some of the most often cited when someone wants to have a discussion about queer coding in media and Hades’ name comes up basically every time. To me, he reads more like a sleazy used car salesman than a queer-coded villain (I think Radcliffe from “Pocahontas” or Ursula from “Little Mermaid” are more straight forward examples to point out for a straight audience) but there are definitely moments in the film where you can see this; his gay best friend-esque dialogues with Meg are pretty notable. That being said, this Hades being into ladies would not feel incorrect to me, a queer. Isn’t every Hades at least a touch bisexual (and everyone in Greek mythology for that matter)? Happy Pride!
So moving past the queer-coding discussion, we get to the villain issue. Giving a villain someone to love is going to change the dynamic of the villain and the story and is a really complicated choice for most writers. There’s a reason why every live action movie with the Joker in it has either had no Harley Quinn or Harley was the main character and the Joker was secondary. And they happen to be a couple with a bad relationship where you could easily have one of them throw the other under a bus if needed! Including Persephone in this story as Hades’ wife would mean that it would be really hard to make Hades the villain. In almost every medium where Hades has a Persephone, he isn’t presented as a villain but instead strictly lawful neutral, and you could still have a funny Hades who’s lawful neutral (look at “Hercules: The Legendary Journeys” or “Jasper In Deadland” for example).
Sure, there’s the option of making Persephone a villain too, but while there’s no real precedence to make Hades a villain outside of a lot of conflating him with the devil through incorrect translations and confusion, there is absolutely no precedence to make Persephone a villain. Hades’ villainy already only works in this story because they have set it up that Zeus single-handedly won the Titanomachy and assigned the Underworld to Hades, leaving him bitter about it. In some versions of the myth of Persephone, Hades’ bitterness at his lot in the Underworld is actually the driving force behind him wanting a wife in the first place. Persephone would likely be a placating force for Hades, causing the more straightforward hero-villain narrative to not work and Disney’s shtick at this time was very much about straightforward hero-villain narratives.
There’s also the general problem that Persephone’s presence would make Hades WAY too powerful as this amazing Tumblr post discusses.
So Persephone as a villain is bizarre and she would likely be a positive thing for Hades. What if they had a relationship that was bad i.e. Joker/Harley? It would be a complete Greek God couple inversion since this movie shows Zeus and Hera as a happy couple (again, the goal was to simplify; this is also why Hercules is their child isn’t of Zeus and Alcmene). Well, then you basically have the horrible “Lightning Thief” movie (which I should maybe write about some time) and honestly, I think it would read really badly. If you don’t get why, go watch that film (but don’t, it’s terrible). Hades is unique is the Disney villain pantheon because he’s so likable and while he does bad things, his motives make a bit more sense than a lot of Disney villains. I think giving him a wife who he’s mean to would not only decrease his likability substantially but I think it would also be kind of controversial. Hades certainly wouldn’t be the iconic character that he is. It would also likely distract from the amount of time he spends interacting with Meg, who is not just a love interest to Hercules but a hugely important factor in the plot. Even if Persephone is equally mean to him, I think you’d still end up in this problem of having to address how two people who hate each other ended up married and then you’re into having to pose Hades as a kidnapper who regrets his choices. Also, I think in 1997 the married-couple-who-hate-each-other trope was mercifully on its way out.
So what if Hades and Persephone are married and it’s a decent marriage but Persephone just doesn’t know about any of his evil plans? That’s workable. Hades’ original plan to kill Hercules is pretty quietly done, and his all out war plan could have involved her being cooped up in Elysium and oblivious. Heck, you could even have the movie play out entirely as is until the scene where he’s enslaving the gods and then suddenly they see each other and he’s like, “Good news, honey! Soon everywhere will be my domain and you won’t have to be cooped up underground half the year!” and she’s like, “Is this what you were planning in your office every night?! You complete idiot!” That would kind of even give Hades more motive without having to mess with Persephone’s character.
I haven’t really touched on what might actually be the most obvious answer of why Persephone is in this movie but not as Hades’ wife: that just hasn’t happened yet. I’m sure this is the argument anyone who worked on the film would make. Okay, sure, there are no winter scenes in the film, but that whole thing is implied to happen long before any of the famous demigods are born. Perhaps this is just the answer. Although I think he’d have a much harder time winning her over now after he, you know, tried to take over the world.
The life of Disney’s “Hercules” Hades didn’t actually end with the film by the way. In the television show, which would have been the perfect place to tell the myth of Persephone, Hades actually has a crush on Aphrodite instead. While it’s kind of cute to give him a crush in general, why did they give up on this prime myth real estate to make this up out of nowhere? And it did in fact make him more sympathetic, but he’s also just far less villainous in the show. Disney just can’t stop with this Hades redemption and romance arc thing either. In the third “Descendants” movie, Hades is there as Mal’s father meaning that he canonically had sex with Maleficent from “Sleeping Beauty.” I had to lie down after that one. But it’s worth noting that while he’s a totally absent father until the point that this film happens, he has his reasons, his characterization in that movie is 100% sympathetic, and he’s not a villain at all.
Gosh, Disney. Just give the man his wife already!

I’m going to gripe a bit at length about the ending of Harley Quinn S2, since it aired on Friday. These were all originally tweets that I’ve copied and pasted over. I’m putting this under a cut since there’s spoilers. 
So, the pivotal part of my complaint: Harlivy is canon now. And that's awesome! I've been hoping that's where the show was going to go since S1E1. For most of S1, it felt like that was the direction it was heading, and I loved it. But were any gay people actually writing this? I ask because, you know what gay people DON'T want to see? Relationships that start out as weird tension, become a drunken mistake, and then get hastily slapped together - at the expense of someone else's happiness, that we're guided to feel sympathy for.
The ENTIRE TIME, the show was working on the idea that Kite Man = goofy & weird, pretty immature, but ultimately well-meaning (in context), enthusiastic, kinda traumatized (by his parents), and deserving of something better. Some of this was played for humor - but not completely. The joke AT FIRST was that Ivy was out of his league. But over time, they actually form a meaningful connection, that was tied in with Ivy processing her own trauma and trust issues - and for a comedy show, HQ actually did a decent job of connecting & showing these things.
I was never, at any point, really into the idea that Ivy + Kite Man could be a legit thing. Ivy's connection w/Harley always seemed stronger, despite Harley having growing to do (which she did - most of S1 was her processing her breakup. Done pretty well. Felt thorough.) But it seemed like the show wanted to stick to the idea that Ivy+Kite Man was viable. It spent a lot of effort exploring that & showing growth, showing support for each other, really making a case for it.
I chalked it up to the usual comp-het stuff and moved on, somewhat disappointed bc I was, as I mentioned, rooting for Harlivy, but frankly any gay person is used to this. 2 characters have a DEEP bond, but they don't end up together, because we've gotta have a straight romance.
But then - after all that - suddenly the show pivots to push for Harlivy after all. REALLY quickly. ABSURDLY quickly - to the point where it actually feels like it was a last-minute decision. The leadup of this essentially happens over the course of just a few steps:
-Ivy+Harley escape from Bane's pit and kiss in relief. 
-They brush this under the rug & chalk it up to emotions running high.
-They get drunk & fuck a couple times @ Ivy's bachelorette party. Ivy expresses some regret, but somewhat passively ('oh, dammit. not again' esque)
-Harley VERY SUDDENLY realizes she's in love w/Ivy 
-Ivy VERY BRIEFLY admits they COULD have a relationship, but that Harley is too emotionally reckless. 
-Harley goes back and forth on wanting to prove she's trustworthy, or accepting that and moving on.
-Kite Man finds out, is sad. Ivy tries to prove she's dedicated to him. They attempt to get married anyway. 
-Wedding is crashed, Kite Man changes his mind & breaks up w/Ivy. 
-Ivy basically goes "Oh well!" and she and Harley escape together, deciding they're a couple immediately.
It looks a little long when you see it listed in like that, but all of that takes place over essentially just a few episodes - out of 26 total - and EVERYTHING after Kite Man finds out happens in 1 episode, alongside a bunch of other show-typical shenanigans.
It's very jarring in a show that took an entire season and a half to let Harley emotionally process everything that happened with the Joker. They set an emotional pace for themselves (that I thought worked really well!) and then threw it into a blender. To go from that level of pacing and emotional depth to everything that happened with Harley and Ivy in the last half of season 2 makes the entire thing feel incredibly rushed and underdeveloped. It's a huge shame.
I can tell that the show was heading towards them being together from the beginning - there's definitely groundwork - but it feels like all that work was supposed to pay off not by the end of S2, but by the end of S3.
For a show that was incredibly dedicated to exploring a character's inner emotional process, and showing them struggle through multiple stages of emotional healing, it sure feels like they didn't want to spend that time with ANY character for the last part of S2. Ivy goes RIGHT from processing that her trust issues stem from emotional neglect from her father to doing absolutely no inner reflection on what she feels and why. It doesn't match the established pace, and it makes the whole scenario seem REALLY sloppy.
Essentially, it feels like they slapped a series of quick-fixes on a HUGELY important scenario they have been building up to this whole time, with the biggest and messiest being Kite Man deciding halfway through the wedding (& in the middle of an anxiety fit) to call it off. He says "You don't really want this, and I deserve better." Ivy admits that he's right, and then goes to Harley, and tells her she loves her. 
 And that's. It.
There's no inner reflection on Ivy's part about the differences between the lives she and Kite Man each want. There's no delving into how her past trauma plays into how she responded to his love. There's not any spoken reason for why she loves Harley - just that she "gets" her.
At the end of the season, the show's message is: these 2 women are perfect for each other, and the thing in the way of their love is gone. Happy ending! But the 'thing' in the way was a character they spent 2 seasons building up to be sympathetic. The show literally shows that the only way for this relationship to exist is at the expense of another person's happiness, and it's SUPER uncomfortable. It doesn't make sense, and it's frankly painful for a gay person to watch, since this is the only gay relationship in the show.
Kite Man gets cheated on and lied to by a person he's entirely dedicated himself to, someone he shared vulnerability and emotional development with. The show spends a lot of time on that development, but then doesn't develop the relationship away at all. It's not a pendulum swinging the same arc back another way. It's more like a bird being shot out of the sky. 
I feel like in this way, the show is cannibalizing itself - it's smashing its own efforts, in order to get to point B.
I don't want to see gay rep that's show to be at the expense of someone else's happiness. I want gay rep that has meaning and development, the same as the straight rep in the show. This wasn't that. This was slapdash as fuck.
This was INCREDIBLY fucking rambly so here's the tl;dr: 
 Endgame Harlivy wasn't given the same development as the rest of the show, and instead felt rushed, uncared-for, and actually mean-spirited. I'd love to write a 'fix' for it. The setup was good, after all. But, well....we’ll see. 
Anyway. Don’t watch the HQ show for Harlivy. Watch it for Bane. And Killer Croc knitting “GOD’S DEAD” beanies. But mostly Bane.

A/N: This is their first meeting. According to the book, they met in first grade, but I’ve got them around the age of 5 here:
July 1978
“Victor Andrew Criss, you get back here this instant!” 
The tiny blonde was flying down the street. His little Harley Davidson boots never touched the ground. The woman chasing him – her husband’s leather belt tight in hand – hadn’t run since high school. That had been two and half Vic’s ago. Red-faced and panting, she was determined not to lose sight of him.
“Your daddy’s gonna whoop your ass red, boy!”
He ran straight down Jackson Street and hooked a left at Witcham. His boots slipped against the smooth cement, but he managed to stay upright. He kept track of his directions in his mind, knowing he’d have to go home some day. Maybe after a week, or a month, or even a few months. However long it took for his parents to realize that coming here was the worst decision they could have made .
Maybe he’d go back to Portland himself. Someone here must know how to get there and would be willing to give him a ride. He had two dollars in his pocket to pay for it.
But Papaw Criss had died, and now Vic’s dad decided they were going to be farmers. He didn’t care that Mama Criss had to leave her good job working in that office with the asshole boss (her words). He didn't care that they could no longer afford McDonald’s on the weekends. Papa didn’t care that their house was smaller, and smellier, or that there were rats in the basement. Papa didn’t care that it would take the entire family to work the land, and, frankly speaking, Vic didn’t want to. Papa Criss didn’t care about anyone but himself, and his sudden desire to recapture his youth.
Or at least that’s what his Mama told Angela Bartlett on the phone the night before the moving van arrived. Though Vic didn’t know what it meant, he agreed with it all the same. Because the way she said it, he knew it was something only an asshole would do.
“VICTOR ANDREW! STOP!” His mother’s voice sounded far away. He could hear the raw force in it, though. She was steamin’ mad, but he didn’t dare look back. He didn’t dare stop. As soon as he stopped, she’d be lifting him by one arm and whipping him with the other. So he lowered his head to fight the wind, and ran even faster.
Vic didn’t see the man until they were colliding. The child’s entire weight slammed into the back of the man’s knee, forcing it to buckle; but the man’s reflexes were fast. He caught himself on one knee. His hand swung out with deliberate force, curling into a fist only moments before it caught Vic above his right eye . Fire exploded across Vic’s face. The force of the punch knocked him off his feet. As the back of his head bounced off the sidewalk, the world went bright white for a few seconds, and then black.
 Vic woke for a brief moment. Someone was carrying him, cradling him like he was a baby. It wasn’t his Mama, but someone with big, round arms, who smelled like cigarettes and barbeque. Vic tried to protest being carried , but his words came out slurred and messy. His Mama’s hand popped up from nowhere, petting his hair. She shushed him.
"Go back to sleep, baby. You’re alright.”
He might have tried to fight it, but his eyes were so heavy, and the world had gone fuzzy. He rested his face against the man’s chest, and drifted away again.
 When consciousness returned in full, Vic was in bed, staring at the walls he'd wake up to every day for the rest of his life. Someone had removed his shoes, bandaged up his head, and tucked him in. He moved to undo all, but sitting up made the dull ache in his brain into a regular ache, and then it became a throbbing ache. His brain was thumping so loud against his skull, he almost didn’t hear the small voice asking him if it was alright.
“Huh?” Vic asked, turning so he could see who spoke.
Looking the same age as Vic, there was a boy sitting on a fold out chair beside the bed. He was taller than Victor by an inch, and had the sort of thin, hay-colored hair baby dolls had. He also had the face of a baby doll, with big blue eyes, and a small mouth. Boys weren’t supposed to be pretty, but Vic couldn’t think of another way to say it. The boy was pretty, and Vic couldn’t stop smiling when the boy looked at him. He liked it when the boy looked at him, but couldn't say why.
He was reading Vic’s comics and sipping from a Pepsi bottle with a straw in it. As he noticed Vic staring, he began to hold the Pepsi closer to his chest. Vic could see some second thoughts cross his mind. He held it out to Vic instead, turning the straw so it was easier for him to take a sip. It was the best tasting soda Vic had ever had.
“Butch got you good,” the boy said. His voice was lower than Vic’s, and already had a quality Vic would come to associate with drinking. “He said you might have a concussion.”
“Who’s Butch?” Vic asked, wincing as he remembered his headache. It seemed to make it stronger.
“My dad,” the boy answered, as if it wasn’t strange to call his dad anything other than some variation of father.
“Oh,” Vic said. The boy was straight forward and plain. It got Vic thinking that maybe he was wrong and that maybe in places other than Portland that was a normal thing. “What’s a concussion?”
“I don’t know but you’re probably going to the hospital,” the boy said. He seemed worried. He set the Pepsi down on the floor, and then held up some fingers, remembering something he saw on TV. “How many fingers am I holding up?”
Vic counted them slowly, trying to not to aggravate the pain. “Three.”
“Okay, you’re good then. Just get some iced peas and a glass of wine. That’s what my mom does when Butch gets her good.”
Vic nodded. What the boy was saying didn’t make sense. How were peas supposed to help a headache? But he said it with such confidence that Vic couldn’t help but think he knew what he was talking about.
They sat in silence for only a few seconds, and then the boy’s mouth was running miles a minute. He showed Vic the comics he’d picked out to read. Even though they were Vic’s, he started talking to him about them like Vic wouldn't know anything. Vic hardly got a word in edgewise, and it was usually, “Oh yeah!” or “Cool.” But the boy had come alive, and his eyes sparkled as he pointed out some detail in the background of the page. Vic’d never seen anyone so passionate about something before. It had him charmed and mesmerized.
The boy was soon sitting on the bed beside him. The Pepsi shared between them, the boy went on about his comic book theories.
“He has to be in Batman’s brain because he always knows what Batman’s doing. Plus my dad has the same thing. He fought against the Vietcong and sometimes he thinks people are there when they aren’t.”
Vic didn’t know what a Vietcong was, but he’d heard Papa say that sometimes, so it was a thing that existed. It drew up some image of a giant monkey, though, so that's what he saw. He giggled at the thought of seeing one that didn’t really exist walking about. It made him remember the game he used to play. That was before Papa had backhanded him across the mouth and told him to grow up, of course.
"That game's for little babies and psychos," he'd said. Vic had started crying, even as he insisted he wasn't either one.
“Yeah, but you don’t see them because they’re ‘maginary,” Vic said. “Robin sees the Joker, too. So he’s real.”
“This is comic books,” the boy said, making a face like that answered everything. In a way, Vic supposed it did. They both started laughing at that.
“I’m Victor, by the way. Victor Criss.”
“Henry. Bowers,” the boy said, holding out his hand. Vic shook it, and when their skin touched, he felt something pass between them.
When Vic looked into Henry's eyes, he saw loneliness. He was like Vic: filled with passions and aspirations, looking for someone to share them with. But unlike Vic, he'd lost his boyhood innocence already. His arms were already sporting purple and blue marks from the lessons he'd learned so far. When Henry looked into him, he must’ve seen something too, because they both kept holding on.
Vic wondered if this is what it felt like to have a brother.
Lacing their fingers together in that way Vic sometimes saw in magazines, the two glanced at the door. They didn’t think they were doing anything wrong, but they’d also learned a long time ago their parents often thought different .
Henry’s voice dropped into a conspirator’s whisper: “Do you like firecrackers?”
Vic nodded.
The mischievous smile that took over Henry’s face made Vic feel very happy in a way he didn’t fully understand. So they were both grinning ear to ear as he crept closer to Vic, and revealed that he had a pocket full of them.
“Can I come over when you set them off?” Vic asked, his voice also very soft and very low.
“Fuck yeah. I got a bunch of crap toys I plan on blowing up after cartoons tomorrow.”
Vic smiled at Henry using a bad word, but the smile faltered when something occurred to him. “I don’t know where you live…”
“Oh, then I’ll come over here. Butch works until later and he can pick me up. I think he'd like to talk to your mom again. They've been talking in your dad's room for a really long time."
Vic blinked. Henry shrugged.
"I have some XMen comics in that box over there..."
 Butch and Henry stayed for dinner. Mama had a dreamy look in her eyes as she served them sirloin and potatoes. Papa had bought that food for their anniversary. But whatever she and Butch had talked about put her in such a good mood, she must've forgot. Her cheeks were even a nice shade of pink, making her look like a little girl. The front door opened and Papa appeared. He had worked his last day at the supermarket, and the smile on his face match the one on his wife's. 
"You boys go on and watch TV," Papa ordered, clapping Butch on the back. "Let us grown ups talk." 
That was code for let us get drunk. The boys shot them curious glances, and then were out in the living room. They had no way of knowing Oscar "Butch" Bowers and Andy Criss Jr were once old school mates, but the laughter coming from the kitchen was loud and hearty, and they knew they wouldn't be interrupted anytime soon. Henry's hand crept over to grab Vic's, and Vic let him take it. They sat that way until Henry passed out. Vic undid their fingers and pretended to be asleep when Butch came to collect his son. He seemed less like a psycho when he cradled his sleeping boy then when he knocked Vic out. The potential was still there, though.
Mama and Papa saw them to the door. They didn’t move Vic back to his room. They turned off the television set and went about their evening unpacking. Vic couldn't make out the hushed argument they were having, but he could hear their tones and knew they were having one . It would be the first of many that ended with one of the other of them in the kitchen, and the other in the bedroom.
Pretending to be asleep became being asleep. Although he'd be waking up in that miserable house, Vic didn't mind it, anymore. He had a whole day of playing with Henry to look forward to. He would recall, years later, that they never did take him to the hospital. In fact, he could pinpoint that memory as the exact moment in time when his parents changed. It was subtle, at first, but they did change as all parents in Derry changed. They became less of a presence in his life, less invested. Almost like they had been preparing for his death from the moment it was decided they belonged there.
That day, Vic didn't know anything about it. So he slept peacefully, and dreamed of the day ahead.

Finally giving my opinions on Persona 5
Here’s a read more because this is honestly just me gushing about the history i have with the series
Prior to the summer of 2013, the best game I had ever played was not Pokemon Emerald (which if you know me irl, I fucking love Pokemon Emerald). By 2013, I had played a lot of really great games: Jak 2 &3, Sly Cooper 2 & 3, Red Dead Redemption, Halo 3, Kirby, Wind Waker, Ape Escape, Fire Emblem....a lot of really good games. But the game that stood out, the game that I played over and over at least once a year was Radiata Stories. This game stood out because 1.) I love character driven games and 2.) Radiata is one of the greatest (granted under-appreciated and quite frankly under the radar) JRPGs of all time. 
Anyways, back to summer of 2013. Just completed my first year of college and was about to spend the summer alone....I forget what the hell I was doing but end of the first week I had set up a blanket fort in my living room and only had the company of a neighbor who didn’t like me much but kept coming over anyways. So I did the natural thing you do when you’re alone and depressed off your balls and went to gamestop and asked the employee for the best and longest JRPG they had. She recommended Eternal Sonata (a game I ended up not finishing) and Persona 4 for the PS2. 
Long story short, I fell in love, and cried my eyes out when I said my goodbyes to a virtual cast of characters. I played it every summer, bought a Vita shortly after the ps2 version just to play golden, and eagerly awaited for 5 to be released. Hell, I found the original trailer before I even played golden. I have a huge emotional attachment to this franchise, which before my biggest emotional attachments to video games were Radiata and Pokemon (the game of my childhood). The reason is I had found this game when I needed the storytelling and themes the most (because I was depressed and alone and drowing my problems in alcohol). The cast of great friends combined with the immersion of putting yourself in the avatar’s shoes made it feel like I wasn’t so alone and got me through every summer I spent alone working until someone came to visit (or until I adopted my cat, Harley).
Between then and now, I got my hands on a few more great games: Dark Souls, Persona 3, Bloodborne (which holy shit this game is also fandiddlytastic), FFXV, more Pokemon and Fire Emblem etc. All great games. 
8 years later, Persona 5 came out and was the first game I had been waiting for and said “wow, the wait was worth it.”
And to be perfectly honest, its the best damn game I’ve ever played. I played it for 2 weeks straight, got the platinum my second playthrough, and I’m halfway through my third playthrough with nearly 200 hours logged. 
Y’all. This game is great.
To get into the specifics, I’m just gonna start off by leaving the soundtrack as holy shit, all bias aside this is the best video game soundtrack, going on par with the likes of Final Fantasy and Zelda (although in terms of OST of the year, I would say Nier is gonna be going toe-to-toe with this one). 
Next up is the art direction. Everyone is talking about how this game eats, breathes, and sleeps style. They aren’t wrong. The art direction for this game is insane, the screen is always in motion. If you cycle through the menu screen, there’s animations for every selection. Even in the shops. The victory screen is running around and watching the flashy animations for your battle results. Its insane and despite running on a ps3 engine, the game feels beyond that.
As far as gameplay, the game is basically Pokemon, but with extra turns for hitting weaknesses. Also the way you catch the Personas in this game gets an added feature if you’ve only played 3 and 4, which is demon negotiation. You hold them up outlaw style, and mug them for money, items, or use their personality traits to answer their qeustions and get you to join them (provided you’re at the appropriate level). Everything else is a giant life sim/visual novel and the game nails it with its cast of great characters.
The characters in this game exceed anything done in the other games. Every one of them, from party members, to the side characters (which in past games were pretty lackluster imo), has an interesting story to tell that keeps you engaged as they try to tackle their problems with your help. And buidling up these relationships adds more than just extra exp when fusing personas; they add combat elements, help with negotiations, the option to switch characters out mid battle, discounts, the option TO FUCKING DO SOMETHING AFTER YOU EXPLORE A DUNGEON BESIDES SLEEP TAKE THAT MORGANA. Its good shit.
The game comes together, and since its an Atlus game in the SMT realm, the story is gripping...for the most part. 
Keep in mind, this is my favorite game of all time, but it does have its problems.
First and foremost, we have the cast and relationships.
While the cast is the best to date, there is one problem I have with them: the game’s writing doesn’t give the main cast enough events to make them feel like good friends over time. This isn’t to say they aren’t friendly with each other, because they are and do genuinely want to forge stronger friendships outside of Phantom Thieving, but the game doesn’t have as many side events due to its shorter calendar coming from P4G. However, even coming from P4 vanilla, there’s just not as many in-game events of them hanging out as there were, and so as an ensemble, they don’t seem as close together as the game tries to play them off. This is just a nitpick though.
Second gripe I have with the cast, and this one is bigger and hopefully something that gets updated in the rumored (and lets face it this is probably gonna happen) Ultimate Edition which I will buy in a heartbeat because I’m fucking trash, but I’m a little let down that on a game this big there’s no option for a female Joker, and that you can’t be gay/bi. And this is even a bigger disappointment given that there’s plenty of set ups within the confidants’ dialogue to do so.
Granted, no matter what I would still date Makoto or Haru, but the lack of male romance options is a let down because at the end of the day, Joker is an avatar character and should represent the player as such. This part of the game actually disappoints me over my 3 major complaints. Its obviously not a deal breaker but it is a disappointment nonetheless.
The last disappointment I have is actually something of a spoiler if you’ve played the past two games so I’m gonna hit some spaces and mark where the spoiler starts and ends.

The game’s ending. The game has a very strong start, and keeps up the pace for about 90% of the game, but falls off in the last dungeons. The storytelling here starts to fall short mostly do to cliches. I won’t get into specifics but I will say the final boss is very much a recycled theme from the past 2 games, and the boss before that just doesn’t seem to fit minus the exposition about him you’re given from the start. In fact, the ending to his arc just feels anti-climatic, and while there’s a story-based reason for that, the link between the two happens a little too fast and could’ve been fleshed out more, which I feel the fix could’ve been just making the game longer. I feel like Atlus was worried the game was too long but when you go into these games, you’re going in because you want the longer experience and I personally feel you should try to tell the story to its fullest rather than speeding things up. The speedup especially feels awkward because its at the game’s climax. 
But this is also a nitpick.

I love this game. This isn’t anywhere near a review but mostly just a rant and i’m sorry if you read the entire thing because I needed to give my irl friends a break and shut the fuck up about it but I wanted to get my full thoughts out somewhere. So yeah. 
12/10 gonna play again tbh
