mad take, but I can't with how the "Vivzie hate club" has two brain cells:
how dare this character be absolutely vulgar, vile, sexist, toxic, and a meanie. This show is terrible, and is teaching children terrible things. I don't care if this is hell, this is wrong and I hate.
but also
how dare this character of gluttony not look like a swol fly. This is not biblically accurate character design. How dare the deadly sins not behave in a cliche way that I have come to expect after watching 50 marvel movies. This free show is terrible and I hate.

as your personal assistant, fuck you.
Peter Parker was a lot of things; resourceful, organizational, efficient, and… frustrated.   It all came with the job of being the personal assistant to the most cocky, arrogant, flirty, stubborn person who also happened to be the CEO of one of the largest technology companies in the world; Harley Keener-Stark.   With Harley being just like his father when he was younger, (read: horny and sad) it’s up to Peter to keep him in line and still keep his job strictly  professional
ao3
Special thank you to @donnaschaunamanon for being my first beta, and for taking my garbage ideas and turning them into a literate story!!
Chapter I;
Peter Parker knew frustration. He knew how it felt to want to tear your hair out and scream into a pillow; but unfortunately this was the real world and you couldn’t fling yourself off of the Empire State Building when you were the personal assistant to the CEO of one of the biggest tech companies in the world.
No matter how aggravatingly arrogant he was; with his stupid feet propped up on his stupid desk and a smart-ass smirk plastered on his stupid face.
     “Mr. Keener-Stark-”
     “Harley.”
“Harley. You need to be at this gala if you want to keep ‘nosy-ass investors’ out of too much of Stark Industries’ business.” Peter quoted, his voice adopting a pleading tone and he clutched his Stark Tablet closer to his chest.
His boss proceeded to pretend think about it, tapping his finger on his chin;      then after a split second of mock-thinking, he locked eyes with Peter and his smirk grew.
“I’ll go,” Peter sagged with relief “If.” He paused, the dramatic bastard. “If you agree to as my date, not  my personal assistant.” Harley finished, and Peter rolled his eyes at his annoyingly familiar attempt at bargaining.
“And I’ve told you before, I’ll agree to a date after you learn to make your own coffee in the mornings.” Peter quipped back exasperatedly.
Harley huffed, “But you’re the only one who can make it perfectly! You’ve set an unreachable standard!” He protested petulantly.
Peter rubbed his temples, attempting to assuage the oncoming headache he felt when FRIDAY chimed in from the ceiling, announcing herself with the gentle tinkling of bells; something she’d done since Morgan Stark-Potts was brought home and FRIDAY’s sudden voice kept startling the newborn infant.
“Mr. Parker, Mrs. Stark-Potts requests your assistance in the penthouse.” The AI stated, “Would you like me to inform her that you are on your way?” She requested helpfully.
When Peter applied to become Mrs. Stark-Potts’ personal assistant,  he hadn’t expected to become Harley Keener-Stark’s personal assistant only six months after he was hired when Mrs. Stark-Potts decided to retire when she learned that she was pregnant.
Soon, instead of becoming the personal assistant to just the CEO of Stark Industries, he somehow became the personal assistant to everyone in the Stark-Potts-Keener family.
Peter nodded even though the AI couldn’t see him. “Yes, Please FRIDAY. Thank you.” He politely replied, beginning to smooth the nonexistent wrinkles from his clothing before he looked back at Harley; giving him a stern look.
“I’ll be scheduling a fitting for a new suit for you on Thursday, and you better show up Harley Keener-Stark or so help me.” He said, frustration and exasperation coloring his words.
     Harley smirked.
“Oh, I do love it when you get bossy, Mr. Parker.” He flirted teasingly, relishing in the pink hue that rose on the assistant’s cheeks. He knew the blush was most likely from aggravation; but Harley liked to think that it was because of his flirting.
Peter fixed his boss with one last look before he swiftly stepping out of the office and letting the door close behind himself gently.
                                                         _______
When Peter reached the penthouse of the tower, he was greeted by a babbling two-year old Morgan Stark-Potts and her little robot-pet that Mr. Stark-Potts created for her first birthday.
Picking the toddler up and handing her the toy, Peter made his way toward the kitchen where Mrs. Stark-Potts was bent over some paperwork on the island.
Peter cleared his throat, causing her to look up.
Despite the stress that life had put on her; Mrs. Stark-Potts looked as though she hadn’t aged since it was announced to the media that Tony Stark had made her CEO of Stark Industries almost twenty years before.
With Morgan perched on his hip, Peter made his way toward the island and began looking over some of the papers Mrs. Stark-Potts was signing and reading over. She made room for him to stand beside her so he could read with her while Morgan began playing her her necklace from her spot in Peter’s arms.
Many of the documents were related to the legal process of handing Stark Industries down to Harley; and a few were pending contracts with other technology moguls around the country.
Peter picked up one of the contracts with Oscorp’s logo stamped in bold letters on the top and he began reading through it carefully. Mrs. Stark-Potts noticed what he was holding and spoke.
“Tony thinks it’s an awful idea; and so does Harley,” She sighs before continuing; “but with the release of their new line of phones in a few weeks, it would put them almost neck-and-neck with SI, and if we can stay ahead of them, then it could be a good advantage for Harley when we announce his inheritance next week at the gala.” Peter inwardly winced.
He still had yet to convince Harley to go to a gala organized in his honor.
“And, how is planning for the gala coming along? Any word from the organizer?” Mrs. Stark-Potts asked suddenly and Peter straightened.
“It’s going well, they’ve set up the catering and ordered the floral arrangements. They have it all ready to be set up in the ballroom.” He replied easily.
Mrs. Stark-Potts smiled approvingly before taking her daughter from him easily. “If you can just make copies of all of these and send them to Legal, then you can go home if you’d like.” She asked him, and Peter nodded eagerly.
He had a paper he’d only gotten halfway finished that was due at midnight that night and he could really use all the time he could get.
“Thank you, Mrs. Stark-Potts.” He said earnestly, beginning to clip the papers together. “I've told you before, call me Pepper.” She laughed as Peter made his way down the hall and Morgan waved her little arms.
“Buh-bye Pe’er!” Her little voice followed him into the elevator, causing him to smile.
                                                      _________
    11:37 pm.
Peter had been writing his paper since he had gotten home from work at about 2:30 that afternoon, and he’d been in his and his friends’ Discord call since about 5:15.
Ned had been quiet for about an hour, and Peter knew he was probably working on a new Lego set since he was smart and already finished his assignments, and MJ and Flash were playing online UNO and screaming at one another when they pissed each other off.
Peter would say a sentence he wasn’t sure about from his paper and receive feedback from one of the three on the call and then he would get quiet again, and all his friends heard from him was his typing.
Peter submitted his paper at 11:56 and he sighed in relief, the stress draining from his body. Man, college was hard.
“Finally loser, we thought you were going to miss the deadline. Again.” MJ snarked through the call and Peter snorted. “Is it too late to drop out and become a male stripper?”
Flash scoffed. “No, but you wouldn’t do well. You’re too pale and skinny. People want big, muscular guys. Not twinks. You’d be better off killing yourself with work than that.” MJ laughed and Peter vaguely heard Ned snort.
“It doesn’t matter what other people want, not when Peter’s got his rich-ass boss wrapped around his finger and he doesn’t even realize it.” Ned said, and Peter groaned.
“Oh my God, guys not this again. He’s flirty with everyone! And he’s my boss!” Peter protested, earning unconvinced noises from his friends.
“Anastasia Steele said almost the same thing, and then she had kinky sex with her boss and then got married to the guy.” MJ said, sounding like she really couldn’t give a shit.
“And, it’s basically what happened with Tony Stark-Potts and Pepper Stark-Potts, minus the whole superhero part.” Ned spoke again.
“Guys, you're referencing a fictional character from a terrible, terrible book series and my boss’ parents, who are like, the definition of a fairytale couple.” Peter said stubbornly.
“Exactly Cinderella. You need to just snatch your happily ever after and stop being a bitchy, bisexual dwarf.” MJ said as Flash laughed. “Holy shit, that’s gonna be your name in my phone from now on!” He said between laughs and Peter rolled his eyes.
“You guys suck. I’m going to bed.” He announced and Flash chimed back in “Yeah, so you can be well rested to better seduce your boss.” Peter flushed, glad his friends couldn’t see his red face. “Goodnight assholes.” He huffed over the sounds of their laughter as he exited the chat.
Standing up from his desk and falling onto his kinda-sucky mattress, Peter stared up at the ceiling. Harley was his boss, and sure he flirted with him from time to time, it didn’t mean anything.
Harley flirted with everyone, so much so, that people compared him to Tony Stark back during his party days. Pepper Potts fell for it because he changed after becoming Iron Man and taking the responsibility of a superhero.
Harley wasn’t going to be kidnapped by terrorists and forced to become a completely different person and see the error of his ways. He was going to inherit Stark Industries in a little over a week and become the next Pepper Potts, CEO and business powerhouse with a little bit of Tony Stark’s recklessness thrown in, and Peter?
Well Peter was going to stay and keep the man out of as much trouble as he possibly could.

okay, so. most of the day was fairly boring lol as expected but tonight of course was super awesome. I had set a 1 pm wake up if you’re not already awake alarm but I ended up waking up to my phone buzzing right at 11 am, it was a Chicago number so I answered and chatted with this guy from this legal company that does boring shit like document review and is doing like part time temporary hiring projects, which would obviously be a short term fix as I’m still looking for full time employment, but they pay like $20 an hour (and you don’t technically have to be licensed for some of their stuff, so being that I am licensed I miiiiiight get to do some more intense stuff for more pay? Idk, have to see) so I have an 11 am Skype interview scheduled with them for tomorrow morning to chat about that stuff. I’m obviously not like dying to get this job or anything but it’d be nice to have some income while I’m still looking, like if I did like 15-20 hours a week that’s $300-$400 so that’s not insignificant. I’m just gonna be super upfront with them about the fact that I’m seeking permanent employment and if I start anything with them there is a solid chance I will up and leave with fairly short notice, and if they’re not okay with that then we won’t do it, but I get the feeling since a lot of their shit is short term they’ll probably be okay with it. So after I got off that phone call I looked up the number for Ulta and called them to push back my haircut appointment which was booked for 12, I was trying to do think if there was somewhere I could plant myself downtown and do a Skype interview to then just run to the appointment but I obviously don’t want to do like, starbucks, and beyond trying to sneak into my old student org office at school (that’s no longer mine obviously) there’s not very many options, so I was hoping we could just push the haircut back a bit till like 2 and she happened to have an opening then so that was perfect because she gets booked up fairly consistently, so I lucked out there. After that I was lazy and went on my phone for a bit before getting up and going on my laptop at the kitchen table while I ate breakfast and then eventually moved over to the couch and was just listening to podcasts while on my computer for a while, then ended up watching the pilot of the new amazon prime show “Hanna” that’s not actually premiering to March but they were making the pilot available for like 24 hours after the superbowl for some reason and I was fairly intrigued by that (I never did actually see the movie its based on) and it was okay I guess? I wasn’t like super enthralled in it but I may give it a try for a few episodes when it comes out. The main actress is pretty good, but she’s a lot older than I thought she was (she actually turns 19 like, today) when I thought she was more like 13 or 14. and she’s apparently not been in much of anything up to this point, so good for her. After that I just turned the tv off and listened to more Panic music since I downloaded a bunch last night on top of what I downloaded after the concert last week so I could be more familiar with that while doing some computer stuff and trying to get some more Batwoman comic reading done. I was trying to see what they had on DC Universe before switching over to Comixology (which I have to pay for) but they only have issues 1-12 of her new 52 run which is apparently significantly longer than that and I burned through those very quickly, and the other ones on there are basically just one-off appearances in a random Batman story. So I guess I’ll read those then see what I can get on Comixology (they apparently have a subscription thing now which may be more affordable than paying for each comic, I’ll have to see what’s the deal with that). Around 4:30 I started getting ready, tried to do my make up very carefully and ended up trying to use my liquid eyeliner on my bottom lid which I normally don’t do but I like accidentally got some on there when trying to get it on my top lid (not sure how I managed to do that) and wanted to see if I could do the rest. It turned out pretty good in the immediate aftermath at least, but when I got home it had migrated down my face a good bit which is basically my biggest pet peeve with black eyeliner so I probably won’t be doing that again (I’m gonna see if I can find a better one at Ulta/Sephora tomorrow, since I’ll be at the Ulta and there’s a Sephora down the street and I want to find something that’s a Sephora brand product. There’s apparently also a Sally’s around there which I may also hit up for some hair dyeing supplies). But I finished getting ready and got on the bus at like 5:30 to meet Jess at her work so we could go straight to the concert from there, I was supposed to get there slightly before she got off so she could use it as an excuse to leave but the bus was being uncooperative (as public transit often is) and I ended up not getting there until like right when she got off, but it wasn’t a big deal because we weren't really in a rush being that we knew Panic didn’t actually take the stage until like, 8:30 lol. We stopped at a mcdonalds drive thru on the way where we got twenty nuggets, two cokes, and a medium fries (it’s always a debate about how many nuggets to get, because Jess is like “but I want more than 10″ when we’re splitting 20 but it’s more expensive to order 30 nuggets than it would be to order 40 nuggets and that’s just way too many (we did try that once) so I was saying we could do a 20 and a 6 piece but ended up just going with the 20 for us to split. Drove the rest of the way out, the concert was out by the airport which is a bit of a hike but we’re used to going there because most Chicago cons are in a venue that’s right by there. There was fairly massive traffic getting into the venue, and we had some momentary panic (no pun intended) regarding paying for parking because we didn't have any cash and didn’t know if they’d take card, but luckily they did so that crisis was averted. of course it’s bullshit that they’re charging $25 to just park in their giant ass parking lot, but that’s life for ya. Once we parked we had to kinda run to the venue because it was cold and we were both bumming it without our regular coats (I had a leather jacket on) so we were happy when we got in there. Got in without issue, climbed up the stairs to the top level of course and found our seats. We were literally like, the furthest section back on the side before the other seats just weren’t sold because you couldn’t be able to see (the other half of our section was actually closed off) but despite that we actually had a fairly good view and could see most of everything, just mostly from a side view and sometimes the back, lol. I was pumped though because I spent like all of last week wishing I could relive the concert and now I was getting to do that, so I was very excited. The new perspective was interesting, we got to see things from different angles which was interesting, like him popping up onto the stage when he first came out and just jumps up so it looks like he just gets shot out at fairly high speed lol. The set list was the same of course, except I’ve been listening to the music all week and actually knew the vast majority of the songs this time and could sing along, so I felt accomplished for that. I did manage to take a good amount of videos that I posted all on my instagram story if you want to check those out (@ racheleiley) and this time I didn’t ugly sing while recording lol so they’re better quality than the ones from last week. But yeah it was really good, I still got super anxious and cringey when he was on the floating piano above the crowd and very clearly not strapped into anything and like, going to the edge of the platform and I like, couldn’t watch because it stressed me out too much lol but thankfully he made it back okay. When Girls/Girls/Boys came on we hadn’t gotten the little paper colored hearts to put over our cell phone lights this time because we were in the reject section that was mostly empty, but it was still enjoyable and he definitely had no less than 10 pride flags thrown onstage at him during it which he picked every single one up and draped them over him and he was like “this is a record” which was great. But yeah, I really enjoyed all of it. When he came back out for the encore someone threw a little teddy bear onstage and he was like “aw, this is the cutest teddy bear, I’m keeping this” and put it in his back pocket as he kept performing and it was really fucking cute lol. He must be in really good shape to be doing this sometimes multiple times a week because it’s so much energy expended and his voice is so strong to be able to handle it (makes sense that he did a stint on Broadway). But yeah, I enjoyed it a lot and got much better videos this time so I’m pleased with that. Once it ended we managed to get out of the parking lot relatively quickly, definitely a lot quicker than we expected because we kinda cut around part of the line to get to the exit faster (sorry not sorry 🤷🏻‍♀️) and then made it the rest of the way home, and Jess made me walk back to my place from her apartment instead of dropping me off which she could’ve VERY EASILY done, but she was being a butt and trying to get payback because she always has to make the walk when we hang out at my place (which we do the vast majority of the time). So I walked home, thankfully it wasn’t too cold, and then spent a while uploading the videos to my instagram story because it was being uncooperative while at the concert so I had to do them all after. My roommate got home shortly after I did and somehow managed to leave her keys in the front door, but now our front door wouldn’t unlock, so she was gonna go around the back to get to the front and asked if I had my front door key, which I thought she meant the front door to our apartment, so I gave her that she disappeared. Not long after I could hear someone calling my name so I went to the front door and was like ??? yes??? but she wasn’t at the door and I was thoroughly confused as to where she could be until it occurred to me that maybe she was locked outside, so I went down the backstairs to the back door where she was in fact stuck, we had a slight miscommunication on the key situation and she couldn’t get the front door of the building to open because I gave her the wrong key, whoops, but we got it figured out and fixed the door situation so that was good. After that was settled I got in the shower and started getting ready for bed and now I am here. I’ve been writing this post for about 40 minutes and it’s now 2 am, I have to get up at at least 10:30 tomorrow to make sure I’m presentable for the Skype interview so I think I should get to bed now. Goodnight loves. Have a lovely Tuesday.

The Complete Guide to Selling Your Car
Thinking about getting a new car?
Figured out what to do with your old one yet?
One option is to offer your car as a trade-in to a dealership.
But you might make more by selling it yourself. In many cases, you can turn a profit on your old car through a few well-placed ads and a car wash.
Here’s the complete guide to selling your car so you can maximize price and minimize headache.
What to Watch Out For
Most people selling a car use a combination of flyers and online ads to reach as many potential buyers as possible. If you plan on advertising online, however, it’s important to watch out for scammers.
According to media reports, private car sellers are a favorite target of internet scam artists. In 2017, over 100 sellers were caught up in a widespread scam in the Chicago area that left them with fraudulent checks and without their vehicles.
You can protect yourself by ensuring the buyer’s payment is the real deal before you hand over the car. If a seller wishes to pay by check, make sure you feel comfortable about engaging with them. Don’t be afraid to learn a bit more about their back story and why they need the car.
You should also refuse to accept a check written out for more than the sale price of the car, as this is a red flag that indicates a scam. When scammers do this, they mail the seller a check in an amount that exceeds the sale price, then ask the seller to mail back a check with the difference. In the meantime, the original check bounces, leaving the seller with no car and missing funds.
Timeline and Price Expectations
To get an idea of how long it will take to sell your car, it helps to look at the average sales timeline reported by dealerships. In general, dealers report that cars have been sitting on their lots a bit longer than usual. In 2017, for example, the average new vehicle remained on the lot for 70 days. The trend seems to have continued in 2019, with dealers reporting sluggish sales.
Assuming you’re asking a fair price, you can expect buyers to negotiate. Be prepared for them to offer anywhere between 20 and 25 percent below your asking price. If you’ve gone weeks without an offer or the interest in your vehicle has started to wane, this is a sign you need to reduce your price.
5 Mistakes to Avoid When Selling a Car
You can maximize price and reduce stress by avoiding mistakes when selling your car. Here are five missteps to avoid.
1. Setting the Price Too High
You want the highest price possible for your car, but it’s important to be realistic. Research your vehicle and compare it to similar models to make sure your price is in line with vehicles in the same condition and class.
2. Vague Description
Potential buyers want to know as much as possible about a car before taking time to schedule an in-person meeting. If your ad’s description is vague or incomplete, people might assume you have something to hide or that you’re not a legitimate seller.
To maximize your chances of making a speedy sale, take time to write a detailed description. You should also include plenty of photos from various angles so buyers can see your car clearly.
3. Slow Inquiry Response Time
When you’re selling a car, you need to become customer service oriented. This means responding to inquiries quickly. My rule is always respond within 24 hours at the absolute latest.
Nothing kills deals like time.
4. Concealing Information About the Car
Be honest about your vehicle’s condition, including the mileage, its maintenance history, and the overall condition.
For example, if the A/C isn’t operational, you should clearly state that in the ad. If the car needs new brakes, be up front about it. This reduces your risk of legal troubles after the sale.
5. Dirty Condition
Give your car a deep clean.
Remove any personal belongings, shampoo the carpets, and wipe down all hard surfaces. You should also wash the outside, including the tires. An hour of work and the price of a good car wash could easily get you a few extra thousand dollars in your asking price.
7 Steps to Sell Your Car Without Any Problems
To ensure a pleasant and hassle-free sale, follow these seven steps.
1. Gather All Paperwork
First, gather all the important documents related to your vehicle. Having these documents handy ahead of time can put potential buyers’ minds at ease and shorten the amount of time between an inquiry and the close of the deal. Here are the documents you’ll need:
Car Title – This is the legal proof that you own the car. If you still owe money on the car, you’ll have a memorandum of title instead.
Maintenance Information – If you have kept any documentation regarding maintenance or repairs, make copies of these documents.
Vehicle History Report – Most used car dealerships offer Carfax or similar reports to buyers. You can get a Carfax report for $39.99. If it helps you make a quick sale, the cost is well worth it.
You should also contact your local department of motor vehicles (DMV) to determine what types of documents you need to complete a sale and make a transfer. In many cases, you can download these forms from the DMV’s website so you can have them ready to go once you’re set to close the deal.
2. Set Asking Price
Next, determine your asking price. To get an accurate value, visit the Kelley Blue Book website. You can also search your car’s value on the Edmunds site. These sites will give you an idea of your vehicle’s fair market value.
3. Make Your Car Look Its Best
Home sellers strive to give their houses curb appeal. The same rule applies to cars. You don’t want potential buyers opening the door and seeing a muddy floor mat or collection of fast food cups.
Make your car shine by giving it a thorough cleaning. Wash the outside as well as the interior. Plenty of car washes offer affordable detailing services, and some even have do-it-yourself shampoo and vacuum facilities. It only costs a few dollars to make your car shine.
4. Create Eye-catching Ads
Your ads will make or break the sale process. To attract the best buyers, take time to create ads that show your vehicle in the best light. Include plenty of exterior and interior photos so buyers can see your vehicle from various angles.
You can post car ads in a variety of places. If you’re looking to advertise online, here are a few sites to consider:
Craigslist – This is a free site that lets you post an ad without revealing your email address to the public. However, it’s important to be wary of scammers.
Cars.com – Cars.com distributes its ads to nearly 200 newspapers and online sites. You can post an ad for free for 30 days. There is also a premium option that costs $49. At that price, you can list your car on the site for 150 days and receive a free Carfax report.
Auto Trader – There are three packages to choose from on AutoTrader.com, and each package runs your ad for 30 days. The basic package is $25 and includes three photos. The premium package is $90 and includes 30 photos plus a bunch of other features.
5. Vet Potential Buyers
Avoid scams and dangerous situations by doing your homework on potential buyers. Many people set up a special email account just for the purpose of selling their car. This prevents spammers from flooding your regular email with bogus offers and junk mail.
Before you agree to meet with anyone in person, talk to them over the phone. Take the time to chat with them so you can get an idea of their personality and their level of seriousness. This helps you eliminate casual “window shoppers” and scammers.
6. Arrange a Test Drive
Once you’ve connected with a serious buyer, offer a test drive. Protect yourself by arranging the test drive in a public setting, such as a shopping mall parking lot or busy retail center. If you’re uncomfortable meeting a stranger alone, ask a spouse, relative, or friend to accompany you.
You should also ride along during the test drive. This ensures the buyer doesn’t drive off with your car, and it also gives you an opportunity to answer any questions the buyer might have about your vehicle.
7. Negotiate and Make the Sale
Assuming all goes well with the test drive, you can expect the buyer to make an offer. Understandably, most buyers want to get the lowest price possible, so expect potential buyers to offer a price below your asking price.
Don’t be afraid to take your time with the negotiation process. At this stage, you don’t need to feel pressured to close the deal. Instead, let the buyer make an offer. If it’s too low, let them know they need to come back with something higher.
Once you agree on a price, you can move forward with closing the deal. If you still owe money on the vehicle, you might have to sign paperwork at your bank. If you own the car outright, you can usually transfer ownership by signing off on the car’s title and filling out a bill of sale.

France’s Great Debate
Yves here. Wowsers, does Macron not know basic French history? The last time a ruler asked la toute France for its opinion about the problems of the day, the situation developed not necessarily to his advantage. From Wikipedia:
The Cahiers de doléances (or simply Cahiers as they were often known) were the lists of grievances drawn up by each of the three Estates in France, between March and April 1789, the year in which a revolutionary situation began. Their compilation was ordered by King Louis XVI, to give each of the Estates – the First Estate (the clergy), the Second Estate (the nobility) and the Third Estate, which consisted of everyone else, including the urban working class, the rural peasantry, and middle class and professional people, who were the only ones in the group likely to have their voices heard – the chance to express their hopes and grievances directly to the King. They were explicitly discussed at a special meeting of the Estates-General held on May 5, 1789. Many of these lists have survived and provide considerable information about the state of the country on the eve of the revolution. The documents recorded criticisms of government waste, indirect taxes, church taxes and corruption, and the hunting rights of the aristocracy.[1]
While the cahiers conveyed the grievances of common people, they were not meant to directly challenge the Old Regime. They were instead suggestions of reforms.[2] Still, the writing of the cahiers forced the people of France to think about the problems that France faced, and how they wanted them fixed. The political discussions that raged throughout France were a direct challenge to the current system, as they gave the people a voice, and subsequently the cahiers were used to guide the elected representatives in what to discuss at the Estates General. In essence, they added greatly to a revolutionary air of expectation of the Estates General.
By Peter G. Collier, a sociologist and educator with a PhD (University Nantes) on the emergence of urban spaces in Ireland. He has lived in France for twenty-five years. Originally published at openDemocracy
My wife and I used to live in West Brittany. Like Connemara it’s a beautiful place if you can afford it. After the effects of the 2008 crisis began to be felt, my work as an independent educator dried up. Banks and institutions put contracts on a two-year hold. After an expensive eighteen months of wait-and-see, we moved to Nantes. Five years on we consider ourselves lucky to have escaped peripheral isolation and financial suffocation[i].
Peripherality is about spatial distance from work and social services. 75% of home-work trips daily in France are by car with an average distance of 50 kms. Without secure work, family ties or welfare protection you won’t make ends meet in Peripheral France. This was why we supported the first protests of the Gilets-Jaunes.
The first Saturday protest in November mobilised 287,000. Most had never protested before. There have been eight Saturday protests. Over 5,000 were taken into custody and a thousand held in prison[ii]. Emmanuel Macron reacted by first, apologising, then freezing tax increases and bank charges while raising the minimum wage. Amazingly the Gilets-Jaunes won more concessions from the government than any trade-union or opposition party for decades. Paradoxically the more concessions Macron made the more the movement became radical. The moderate middle-class, unsettled by the level of violence, now stayed away on Saturdays. (For this alone it may be argued that Macron had played it this way.)
The Two Frances The current discord in France is not about immigration, but money and status. For decades successive governments have driven economic deregulation while distributing welfare to the bottom end of the social scale.
The squeezed middle paid revenue and kept their lips shut (an estimated ten million people). This evolved alongside the isolation of suburban and rural spaces and resulted in the emergence of ‘The Two Frances’. Hiding this national social fracture has been ‘Europe’ – an increasingly unsure ideal fused indubitably with global neo-liberalism. Macron’s ambition for a post-national European sovereignty and a multicultural France is considered with suspicion in the poorer regions. Hyper-centralisation in the internet age and the fusion of regions into super-regions under François Hollande resulted in the dislocation of thousands of public servants. Income inequality and status depreciation in the face of new wealth have been the results.
Two decades ago, the philosopher Marcel Gauchet warned that the greatest threat to multicultural France was that nobody had bothered to debate its effects on democracy[iii]. Today the country is a multicultural society but without a reformed democracy. That’s why ordinary people stand at roundabouts wearing fluorescent jackets: They want to be seen and what they are talking about listened to. They refuse any form of representation, which is their great strength and weakness too.
Recently political scientist Pierre Rosanvallon described populism as ‘a political form that is, for the moment, the sole response to the problems we face in the world today’[iv]. This form uses bits from the Right and pieces from the Left to develop an incoherent narrative against the status quo. The first successful populist is Emmanuel Macron himself. His ‘start-up’ election and his positioning in ‘the centre’ was managed on a digital platform by a small core of friends from the Grande Ecoles and Tech corporates like Apple.
His party LREM is an eclectic ferment of mostly better off middle-class executives. LREM constituency politicians are rigidly ‘whipped’ by Richard Ferrand, an ‘old dog’ of the Socialist Party’s tribal politics whose fiefdom is in Brittany’s heartland. Macron lacks such roots in regional France unlike all previous Presidents. He is isolated in the Elysée palace and so needs to win back trust (his IPSOS popularity rating dropped to 20% in December but so did that of all other political actors).
Great Debate Between Citizens
Now he’s sent a letter to every citizen asking them to participate in a citizen’s debate about the future of French democracy. It is to be organized across the land until March. The letter is interesting because Macron poses no less than thirty questions to the citizen. What might a citizen do if she was to find themselves in his position? The agenda gives four themes: purchasing power, the role of the State, ecological transition and citizenship including immigration quotas. The president admits there are subjects such as taxing the super-rich he is not going to allow onto the agenda.  His described the debate in these words:
‘This debate is neither an election nor a referendum. It’s your personal expression of your own story, your opinions, your priorities that is being sought without distinction of age or social situation. It is I believe a great step forward for our Republic to consult its citizens in this way.’
Will the debate get consensus from the multitude of opinions to be expressed? What limits will be accepted, and what mechanism will record consensus? The dissolution of the traditional Right/Left party divide leaves the President in a rocky place. How will they take part in the national debate? Does it not undercut the agonistic role of the Assemblée Nationale?
The Yellow-Vests are a bottom-up, eclectic social movement. The debate will differ from those of the Italian 5-Star Movement’s digital platform that was managed top-down. The debate overseen by the State is between citizens and not between citizens and the government. This is a risky and complex proposition. Visionary, if it creates a new communicative civic space for the Twitter age. A debacle, if those well-funded lobby groups succeed in monopolizing the debate for their champions.
High Stakes
Last weekend, I watched one of France’s popular chat shows hosted by Cyril Hanuna. Hanuna speaks his audience’s roughbanlieulanguage. For nearly two hours everyone gave their opinion about the arrest of a gilet-jaune champion boxer. He’d hit a CRS member in defence, he says, of a woman who was being beaten up. Why was the boxer hero of the gyspy community in custody while the cop who’d assaulted an arrested black protester was free?
Over a hundred thousand euros were collected online for his legal fees. The debate was accompanied by phone videos showing poorly-trained police using rubber bullets indiscriminately. Once the President’s name was mentioned gross imprecations were hurled. Hanuna responded that incidents concerning the boxer and the CRS officer were not the same in the eyes of the law. But you wouldn’t think many in the studio accepted this constitutional distinction. For them the enemy was the power incarnate of the president-monarch. The security force is his lacquey. What’s dangerous for the great debate is having no red lines for this tribal cynicism and hatred for all authority.
Despite this, Macron’s Great Debate should challenge French civic society to innovate and find ways to make people’s daily worries matter. Already there have been the usual blunders that have eyes thrown to heaven. The first coordinator Chantal Jouanno prompted understandable outrage at her 14,OOO euros monthly salary. The debate will be organised at local commune level with a procedure for individuals and civic associations to speak at scheduled meetings. (For those interested you’ll get details in French here).
In one of the first surveys carried out, one in two French citizens want to participate[v]. The stakes of the debate are very high both for Emmanuel Macron and for French democracy. The rest of Europe will be watching and hopefully learning from its results.

Help! I Can’t Stop Wasting Time…
There are so many distractions when you are a freelancer. From kids coming into your home office or time sucks like Facebook, you need to focus and be more efficient. The key is arming yourself with the right tools for the job.
Here, we’ve gathered a list of online time savers (productivity tools for the win!) plus tips for managing distractions.
Create the Right Working Space
Freelancers, if you want to work from home, you need an actual work space. Using the kitchen counter or just putting a desk in your bedroom is a recipe for distraction. (You’ll see the dishes piled up or find 10 other things that need your attention when what you should be doing is working.)
Create a dedicated workspace—preferably one with a door and that isn’t used for anything else.
Look for a room with a window. Natural light will keep you feeling refreshed and focused.
Make sure you have an ergonomic setup with a good chair, appropriate desk setup and comfortable temperature.
Keep your work space clean and clear from clutter. Spend the last few minutes of each day tidying up so that every day starts with a fresh place to work. Dirty spaces are not productive spaces.
Set Office Hours
You need to set office hours and enforce them to family, friends and clients. Put a sign on the door if you have to.
Office hours don’t have to be a standard 9-to-5 workday (that would take some of the flexibility out of freelancing), but you should have some work hours that fall during the work times of your clients so they get information and can communicate with you easily.
Set a workday schedule and honor it. That means kids and spouses need to stay away from your work space during posted office hours unless it is pre-planned or part of a break or lunch time. Creating this flow will help give you the space you need to focus.
Set additional office hours for times when you actually answer the phone. A staff of one can get overwhelmed with phone calls. Set a schedule for answering and returning calls each day and let everything else go to voicemail. (You can even post phone hours in your email signature so clients know the best time to call.)
Turn Off Push Notifications
The easiest way to avoid distractions is to remove them from your devices. From mobile push notifications to pop-ups on your desktop, these tiny distractions eat away at the day.
Freelancer rule No. 1: Turn off push notifications.
Freelancer rule No. 2: Turn the volume off on mobile devices.
Freelancer rule No. 3: Use a blocking app if you can’t do it alone.
Tool to try: Freedom allows users to schedule the amount of time on specific apps and websites. If you have a bit of an “addiction” to Facebook, give it a try and put some real limits on usage.
Put on Headphones
Block out the world with a little white noise. Invest in a good set of headphones and use them to help avoid noise distractions.
Find music that fades into the background. (Something without ads is best for most people because you won’t hit periods of loud sounds or over stimulation.) Avoid podcasts or audiobooks that can actually become a distraction while working.
There’s another bonus to headphones as well: When you are wearing them people immediately think you can’t hear them or are busy and they might be less likely to disturb you.
Use a Time Tracker
Do you know exactly how you are spending time or where those distractions are coming from? Do you ever ask where the day went? (And why you don’t have anything to show for it?)
If you want to get a good handle on what you are doing—particularly for designers and developers that spend most of the day on a computer—enlist the help of a time-tracking app or tool.
There are two categories of time trackers:
Time tracking apps that help you manage tasks and billing for your freelance business. These tools help you know exactly what time you spend on what projects (and who should get billed.) Look for a tool that will track across multiple devices (if you tend to lose time in sneaky places or work from more than one place) and one that offers reporting that’s easy to understand. Tool to try: TopTracker is a free tool designed for remote workers and comes with productivity reports.
The other type of time tracker really gets to the root of what you are doing and when. It’s less for billing clients and more for helping you manage your time for efficiently. Most of us don’t even realize how many distractions are keeping us from our best work. Tool to try: RescueTime runs in the background of your computer and on mobile devices and then provides a report of what websites and software you are using and how much time is spent with each. (The number of hours on Instagram might be a little shocking.) Plus, you can use it to help limit time on websites or with apps that you need to avoid a little more.
Use More Visual Tools
Freelance designers can spend a ridiculous amount of time trying to explain the way something looks to clients or other team members. Cut out all that wasted time and effort by using a tool that allows you to collaborate visually.
A digital whiteboard can set the tone of an in-person meeting online. (You can even brainstorm and work out solutions to problems on different schedules.) Real-time collaboration takes some of the loneliness out of freelancing and give you the accountability of working with a team—which is great for keeping projects on task and on time.
Tool to try: Mural is an easy to use digital white boarding tool that you can use to share ideas in a visual space. Not only is the space designed for quick sketching and sharing, but users can see everything in real time, plus set a timer so that meetings stay on schedule.
Browse Incognito
Most website design and development freelancers are online all the time. It just comes with the territory.
Try browsing in incognito mode (it keeps popups and notifications at bay) or use a browser add-on to take control of your productivity.
Tool to try: StayFocused is a Google Chrome extension that restricts how much time you can spend on certain websites. So while you might have to be online all day, you won’t be hanging around on Twitter. You can block websites, types of content (no more cat videos at work) or set time limits so that you are allowed some free browsing time.
Automate As Many Business Tasks as Possible
For freelance designers and developers, one of the places where distractions loom is in the management of business tasks. (Mostly because we don’t like them.) From preparing and sending invoices to filing paperwork and contracts, try to automate as many business functions as possible so you don’t waste time avoiding these tasks. The right software and tools can go a long way to helping you stay focused and manage these chores with ease.
Tools to try: TermsFeed allows you to create basic legal documents such as privacy policies or terms and conditions; Slack is great for managing chats and sharing in one place, so that you don’t have a bunch of client text messages; use invoicing software such as Invoicely to bill clients and manage revenue and expenses.
Create a Routine
Start each day with a plan for that day. What do you need to accomplish before you call it quits? Every freelancer will have a routine that’s slightly different, so you might have to play with daily schedules some to create a routine that works for you. Here’s what a sample routine might look like:
First part of the day: Do a quick check of social media (work accounts) and follow up with posts or messages, where applicable. Check and respond to all emails that can be handled quickly.
Move on to bigger project work. Start with things that need the most brainpower while you are feeling fresh. Spend a few hours working through this work and plan for a break or two during that time.
Take a long break for lunch or to take a walk. The mid-point in the day is a good time to re-energize.
Check and respond to email again.
Use the afternoon period to finish up tasks and knock out low-hanging fruit items.
Dedicate some time to business or bookkeeping tasks, to returning phone calls or client meetings and check email one last time.
Create a plan for tomorrow as you wrap up the day so that you can leave knowing what is coming up and come into the next day ready to move forward on projects and tasks.
Conclusion
Sadly, much of the time freelancers waste isn’t even recognized. It’s spent in places that don’t really need our attention at all.
Using the right tools and creating the right work environment and habits can go a long way to helping you avoid distractions when you are supposed to be working. And if these tips don’t help you get more done, it might be time to evaluate your freelance work location. A home office isn’t for everyone; if all the little things are keeping you from work even after trying to focus, it might be time to look for a co-working or shared office space so you can jump to the next level professionally.
Remember, if you are more productive during work hours, you’ll spend less time playing catch up after hours. Making little changes can go a long way when it comes to managing your freelance design business.

The Locksmith Trade – The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
Are you thinking about becoming a locksmith? Many people ask me about my profession when I arrive at a job site. The idea of working with the public, working with hand tools, making a quick buck on lock-out calls, and of course the power and ability to unlock doors, cars and safes is quite intoxicating for some people. I don’t place help wanted ads, but nevertheless I average one unsolicited résumé a month via e-mail. Usually it arrives from an eager teenager looking to do an apprenticeship. O.J.T. (on-the-job training) is a fine way to go if you can get the gig. That’s precisely how I started. That and reading every trade magazine I could get my hands on, endless hours doing research on the web, taking classes, attending trade expos, and talking with any locksmith who would take the time to chat with me (and many would, so long as I wasn’t one of their competitors). But that’s how it is for most lock jocks. Once you begin work as a locksmith it gets under your skin. It consumes you and becomes an obsession. That’s not exactly a bad thing after all; to be (God willing) financially successful at what you enjoy is a great way to pay the bills. There is, however, a price to pay that does not fit with most people’s lifestyle, and thus — the purpose of this article.
The Good: Helping the public and making a few bucks while doing it. First off, I rarely charge to unlock a car or house when there is a child locked inside. When I get the call, usually from a panicked parent declaring his or her child is locked inside a car, I rush to the scene. There are few better moments for me as a locksmith than seeing the relief in a mother’s eyes when I unlock the door and she pulls her child from a sweltering car on a warm summer day. “You’re my HERO,” she says as she holds her child close with tears in her eyes. “No charge ma’am. We don’t charge for children locked in cars. If you like, for a small fee, I can make you a copy of your car’s door key so it’s less likely to happen again.” They almost always say yes, and the payment for the key usually accompanies a tip. The “up sale” is simply to cover my gas going out on the call, and the tip, if any, buys me lunch.
The rest of my jobs are typically for-profit jobs. Still, over half of what I charge goes right back into the company in the form of gas, insurance, advertising, trade organization dues, license fees, vehicle maintenance, tools, supplies, and other expenses.
As a locksmith you will never get rich, but if you play your cards right you could retire well. The plan, as I read in a popular trade magazine, is to sell a well-established shop with a long list of customer accounts, while owning and collecting rent on the property the shop sits on. It’s even better if you own an entire complex and collect rent from your shop’s neighbors, too. I personally know a retired locksmith who did exactly this and I understand he is doing quite well for himself.
Many locksmiths make and sell tools and/or reference books, or teach classes (as I do) to supplement their income.
The Bad: Being on call 24/7. After-hours and weekend service can account for a large part, if not most when first starting out, of your income. Then there are the late night calls. 2am, half drunk and he can’t find his car keys: “I’m sorry sir — I can’t help you drive your car tonight, but if you call me in the morning I will be happy to assist you.”
The locksmith industry is a highly regulated (but necessarily so) security industry. The licenses, insurances, and bonds you have to carry can cost a small fortune. I have a city business license, a state locksmith license, a State Contractor’s License for lock and security work, two insurance policies (general liability and commercial vehicle insurance), two different bonds, and I am a member of two major national trade organizations. In California, you need to be fingerprinted and pass State and Federal background tests. I am also a member of some local organizations including the Chico Chamber of Commerce and the North Valley Property Owner’s Association.
The cost of running a business like this can be overwhelming and there is always another tool you need to buy, another software update, or replacement parts/tools that need to be ordered. I am currently saving up for a high security key machine that retails for $5,800.
Let’s not forget the paperwork. You will need to keep legal forms for customers to fill out and detailed records of who, what, where and when. The last thing you want to do is make keys to a car or house for someone who does not have authority to hold a key to that property.
Lastly, buy a nice shirt and tie because there is a good chance you will find yourself in a court of law before long for, among other things, domestic disputes.
The Ugly: Evictions, repossessions (R.E.O.’s), and re-keys after a domestic dispute. There are few things as humbling in this profession as writing a bill for after-hours service and handing the new keys over to someone wearing a fresh black eye. I vividly remember one woman who was standing next to a hole in the drywall where her head was forcibly inserted only a few hours earlier. The local sheriffs know me because it’s not uncommon to perform the re-key and security checks while they are still there, filling out their report.
Can you say fleas? Yep, now I keep flea powder in the van because you never know what condition a recently foreclosed house will be in.
Angry former tenants who have been kicked out can also present a challenge. Sometimes the locks are disabled or destroyed, and I keep latex gloves in the van in case I ever have to pick open another lock that has been urinated on.
The bottom line: I am quite happy being a locksmith, most of the time. The pay, the freedom of the job (I can leave my schedule open if my kids have a school event), and the satisfaction of helping people while making a profit for myself keeps me going.
My advice to you:
1. Do your research before entering the market as a locksmith. My town has too many locksmiths per capita. There is barely enough work to go around much of the time.
2. Get on with another locksmith and be willing to relocate, as you may be required to sign a “no compete” contract saying you will not leave to be your boss’s competitor. Locksmith schools are okay, but a seasoned locksmith can show you some tricks of the trade that can help you make higher profits or perform jobs better and quicker than the basic skills taught in most schools.
3. Be willing to pay your dues. It will take many years to build up a customer base, and a name for yourself. A wise locksmith once told me it takes at least three years before they (the customers) know you’re there, and seven before they notice you are gone.
4. When you start out on your own, get an easy to recognize logo and put it on everything: your van, invoices, pens to hand out, and every other piece of advertising (see our logo below).
5. C.Y.A. Document everything and have pre-printed, professionally prepared, legal forms for your customers to fill out.
6. Don’t get too carried away. If you have other obligations, like a spouse and/or kids, make sure to make time for them. It’s hard to turn the phone off, or turn down calls because you’re turning away money, but you can’t get back the days you miss.
A former employer of mine occasionally tells the story of how he made $2,000 in one weekend dispatching calls to his on-call locksmith, while he was on a boat on Lake Shasta with his wife. It was a rare weekend vacation for them and he spent a good part of the day on the phone. She died of cancer two short years later, and he later told me he would give just about anything to have that day back. I know this story personally as I was the on-call employee that weekend.
To quote Uncle Ben (from Spider-Man, the movie): “With great power comes great responsibility.” The ability to unlock doors, bypass alarm systems, unlock safes, and the inside knowledge of customers’ security systems has been the downfall of unscrupulous locksmiths. In short, if you can’t handle the temptation, don’t pursue the profession.
Finally: Never take advantage of someone. Like Grandpa always said, it can take a lifetime to build up a good reputation but only a moment to ruin it.
Good luck in whatever you decide — unless, of course, you are planning to open a lock shop in my service area.
