Okay, now on the other end of things

Morality wise, what about the NDA? Like they're the "good guys" in the story but who's the morally best and worst in your opinion? Also Kurumi as well if you want, because she kind of counts as am honorary NDA member ig?

Ooooooooh man this is a whole other can of worms, isn't it? Ranking the peacekeepers on their morality is much more cut n dry, but there's a whole lot more to think about when discussing the much more nuanced ethics each detective has. So to not devolve into too much chaos, I'll once again only be basing my ranking off of what is seen in canon in the game, so no talk of Number One Yuma (though that is definitely its own decisive topic, which will become evident soon). And as usual the list will go from best to worst, so we'll ease ourselves in before really diving into the nuance.

To start us off is the lovely Fubuki! Oh, you sweet summer child. The most morally sound out of all the detectives. Not a single bad bone in her body. She may be uneducated about many things in the world, but that doesn't stop her from being inherently kind and sweet, even with her unconventional compliments.

Next in line is Halara! I was honestly a little conflicted on whether they would be placed above or below Desuhiko, but I after some thinking, I believe Halara has the moral high ground. Obviously their stinginess and greed lowers their score, but the road is paved with good intentions. The reason they ask for so much money is so they can put it toward a program to help save cats! Even though they have trust issues with people, they care deeply about animals. And once they do gain some trust in human allies like Fubuki and Desuhiko, they say that their companionship is considered enough payment for the time being when partaking in casual investigations.

Climbing down to the next rung is Desuhiko. He's definitely got some issues with his ethics regarding his flirtatiousness. He is not afraid to flirt with any woman he meets and that is not good. Thankfully, he doesn't necessarily force any interaction and does back off when scolded or ignored enough, but that doesn't make his words any less uncomfortable. He needs to learn some self control or else he's gonna get a boot to the head.

Now here's where things get really interesting. Vivia takes third place in moral deviance. This is without going into the possible meanings of the teardrop tattoo, god forbid I bring up the idea of him murdering someone or being part of a gang; things would get much worse if I did. Even then, Vivia's overreaction to Yuma's determination to expose the truth definitely sits him firmly on the lower end of the ranking. He threatened to kill Yuma just so they could go back to living in blissful ignorance of Yakou's involvement in the case. He only resigned from his murderous intentions after hearing Yakou's spirit, calming him down and making him realize that he can't turn away from the truth and has to believe in his heart (kinda gay ngl). Vivia as a whole is harder to exactly pin down with his moral grayness regarding honesty, but ya can't really ignore the intention to slit someone's throat open, can ya?

And now we reach the actual murderer: heyo Yakou. Despite all the manipulation pulled by Yomi and Makoto, Yakou didn't have to kill Huesca. He did it for vengeance and atonement, leading all his detectives into the lion's den in order to execute his plan. Despite taking advantage of his allies, he undoubtedly had good intentions and is a very good soul overall. He wanted to bring justice to his wife who died because of an absolutely awful man and make up for not being able to save her. But murder is still murder, regardless of motive (I would say to put a pin in this, but I don't need to when the topic is coming up again right around the corner).

And here's the actual mass-murderer: Yuma! Now I know this may come as a shocker (or not depending on how much this game has been rotating in your brain like it has with mine), but Yuma is far from innocent, as much as we love to call him 'baby.' With the help of Shinigami, Yuma has killed many culprits. It can be argued that the very first reaping of Hitman Zilch doesn't fall under the same umbrella of awareness of his crime, but he still killed him! And afterward, Yuma made the decision to enter the labyrinth knowing that the culprits would die. He didn't have to use the labyrinths. It's especially egregious in chapter 3 when help was already on the way and would've put a stop to Dominic smashing Yuma to bits since they had the culprit with them! A death could've been avoided, but hindsight is not Yuma's Forte. And like I said, this isn't even talking about the corrupt fuckery of the WDO and what Yuma might've done as Number One.

I love vivia. The way he executes his... Narrative purpose is f hilarious.

He's a detective but he says "how about we don't solve this mystery, huh?"

He's part of the main cast but for the first 3 chapters there are sidequest NPCs with more lines than him. When he does talk, the fourth wall shakes in its boots.

When his own chapter starts its like his middle name is waldo cuz where the fuk is he??? Is he stalking me from where I can't see him? (What i thought before I knew that's actually probable)

Chap says "I'll interrogate Yomi when we're back" *gets hit with realism* like he was barely hanging on by 1 HP after that fight and yomi dealt the final blow. Ultimate "boss when you fight him vs boss when he joins your party" moment.

He say both "apologizing is too much trouble" and "sorry i threatened you with a knife" oh yeah. I forgot to even mention. He threatens Yuma with a box cutter.

Vivia's DLC could be playing as vivia but all he does is stay in the office a whole day while everyone else comes in and out with shenanigans like one of those low budget one location comedy sitcomes. Someone asks vivia if he wants to come investigate, he says no and I say "yea. This feels on brand." Dude could not even solve a mystery and I'd still just be satisfied with the screentime. It would work cuz vivia says "i prefer being alone" but he loves this silly lil found family of silly weirdos.

I hope they leave Fubuki and Vivia alone in the same room cuz (if Fubuki remembers he's there) imagine directing Vivia's convoluted metaphors towards FUBUKI. so many ways this can go wrong... If it were me I'd send them on an assignment together just to see... *evil giggle*

Noragami reread: Volume 25, 26 & 27 thoughts

The last of the reread thoughts. Until the next reread (I'll still use the same tag!), and see you with the release of the final chapter shortly. Until then, I'll be mostly off the grid.

Volume 25 is...absolutely brutal. It starts right off with Yuka clearly seeing Hiyori as similar to her mother (aka someone who smiled her way through problems), then we get a flashback of Yukine's father finding the letters and ripping them up in front of him. The most chilling part is that he said he knew all along what was in them, but Yukine isn't even listening. And then there's the page of sound effects followed by an unsettling silence. I just. ANOTHER TOP 10 MOST GUTTING MOMENTS OF NORAGAMI. (Maybe I will actually compile a list.)

Nora goes back to trash dad because even though she's figured out he's full of shit, she still craves the love of a parent--she wasn't ever alive long enough to have it, so that yearning will never go away. So when he calls for her with a fake apology, she's never heard that from him before and believes him, and gets swept up in the moment of working as they used to. But the illusion is broken, and that's why she eventually turns on him.

Yato's struggle to get Yukine back contrasts beautifully with trash dad's backstory--a story about how the world is mean, and cruel, and you have to fight to survive because everyone's just in it for themselves. Trash dad is projecting his anger onto Yukine because he never had a father figure to look up to, but Yukine does now--Yato.

Yukine realizes this in what is still probably the most beautiful scene in the manga (although him asking Yato about him being buried is tied). I cried so many tears over this, and I will continue to do so.

Trash dad in Yomi with Izanami is a super interesting scene because of how casual she is with him. She sits with him a while, seemingly never pressures him to dine with her, and willingly tells him all about shinki and ayakashi while asking him about his own past. At the end of this, he steals the brush from her and escapes. When we see Izanami in the current story where Yato and Ebisu encounter her, she's desperate for a friend and keeps pushing food on them. So my guess is that back then, she was a lot more hospitable (or maybe just because she knew humans aren't allowed to leave Yomi), but him stealing from her and escaping caused her to become even more lonely and distrustful.

Likewise, what Father says about the brush naming shinki is very interesting too. The law of Yomi supercedes the law of heaven as far as spirits are concerned, because she was the first person to try naming ayakashi. Since Hagusa and Mizuchi were both named as corrupted spirits, the names bestowed by the brush can't be removed by Amaterasu. Could Izanami remove them? Probably.

That makes me wonder if, in the final chapter, because the brush is destroyed they will lose those names. It doesn't really matter, though, because (a) Yukine already made the choice to become a stray. That won't change. Same with Mizuchi, even if she'd personally gone around and begged every god to release her. But (b) both of them were pushed into this choice by a master manipulator, one who is dead and won't be able to control them anymore. And (c) Yukine, at least, has found his forever master. Mizuchi is...a little lost in that regard, but I'm hoping the fan theory that Kofuku names her comes true.

Not a lot from volumes 26 and 27, but I didn't notice before that trash dad separated himself from Fujisaki so he woke up, but how did his lifeline to Father get cut? I assume they'll explain it in the last chapter--maybe Yato stopped by? He's unable to talk super well (probably because he's feeling some of the effects of decapitation) but he would still remember the name...but that also fades as he talks to the police.

Side note, I love that his birth date is omitted in his student ID. The month and date, not just the year. Adachitoka said NO celebrating Fujisaki's birthday for you.

Now that I'm not distressed and angry about the Hiyori shinki thing (because I know it was reversed), I want to comment that I wish she had said, like, a single word while she was a shinki. Wondering where she is, or who that girl's body is, or something. I do just wish this whole business hadn't happened in the first place, but it is what it is. Since it was undone, it's not a dealbreaker.

As for my other ending hangups--I think Yukine's father won't have his fate mentioned, or maybe just a quick mention that he's dead. There's a point in Yukine's Hagusa arc where he decides his father isn't worth his time, basically, and the official translation talks about forgiveness. But it's not really forgiveness, it's just accepting that getting revenge won't do anything now.

Still kind of wish Hiyori and Bishamon had had more to do in the final arc, still think it's a bit funny that the gods started slaughtering humans only for them to go back to normal like 10 minutes later, don't really care that much though. As long as the trio stays alive and trash dad stays dead, I'll take it.

The mood feels right, it's that time without light. Who's up for a lil late-night Togashiposting? Because there's one that has me thinking about a few concepts we've been on about. Which means we get to talk baby's first foxboy blorbo again. This was always one of my better posts that still generates interest today, but for the basic idea we talk a lot about the Akazaya as throwbacks and particularly Okiku's ties to Eiichiro Oda's own history on Rurouni Kenshin. There was another two-faced redhead in popular manga at the time, and we get Oda referencing the iconic clash with Game Master in interviews as a big moment he liked. But also just in One Piece canon it's interesting how Ryokugyu with a similar power intersects with Kiku's tale to bolster the connection. Likewise with the parallel story of the thieving fox spirit and how it intersects with Kiku's past.

For this part of our examination though, we're going to look through the lens of another meta concept we've been on about. Poking at the nature of "filler" and how much strict canon really matters? This is the finale of Kurama's last fight in the anime, something really glossed over in the manga as YuYu Hakusho tragically came to a close in the hurried Three Kings Saga. To me though, the anime at least salvages this arc into a worthy conclusion. I don't actually mind the idea of our quartet squaring off their personal arcs underneath the bigger show of the Makai Tournament. Kurama's fight with Shigure is so well done for that. One thing you have to give me, being filler or noncanonical is not an impediment to being an inspiration or an influence on someone else later.

The whole fight is a great finale for Kurama & his demonic past. We meet him distanced from it, they're reconnected in the Dark Tournament, he embraces it to answer the call in Chapter Black...then here after reconciling it he rejects the old self. Importantly though, he only wins through taking advantage of seeds planted by his old self. I love the final line to Yomi about it "I never leave anything behind." That reconciliation of past and present for a brighter future is where I really see Kiku picking up this torch. Himura Kenshin has a lot of similarities in his arc, but Kurama's with themes of reincarnation and parent/child bonds feel like the ways this gentle redhead seeped in. Of course, Kiku is still her own take on the idea. The trans aspect and cloaking it in a lady caring about her reputation is an excellent evolution.

Can't ignore the antagonist here either, this is why I was thinking this part in particular after all. A surgeon with a samurai vibe, choosing an honorable death after defeat. The way Shigure shaped the tone of this climax for foxboy's saga was giving me some big feelings. I honestly haven't rewatched the Three Kings Arc in years. The montage of core scenes though, showing us how Kurama grew into someone so willing to choose this new life, it had a big one I didn't really think about in this context:

How it all starts between he & Yusuke the MC. The story of the Forlorn Hope. That dub name is way cooler because the Funimation dub of the YuYu anime is a national treasure. But yeah...that's where this entire relationship started. It's an artifact that demands the user's life to grant a wish. An empty, unfulfilled Kurama was so casually willing to throw his life away to return a mother's love...without getting the point. Too busy turning over every possibility he hasn't realized how much he's grown. There's no way his mother would be happy with that trade because she doesn't see some legendary thieving fox demon...and if you told her she'd probably just say that explains a lot.

How does Yusuke solve it? Stepping in and sharing the burden. Very similar tone we'd see later with Usopp and the samurai. Even with the little dash of levity and that fine line between nobility and senseless self-sacrifice. Not to mention the big moment of Kiku's fall being Kin's final push to evolve and strike down Kanjuro. That's not unique to YYH but it's one of the biggest pillars of that series. But Bakura Town ends up being a lot like this in tone. The sumo match. Luffy jumps in because Kiku's putting her body on the line to amp up the crowd's panic. The two working together, Luffy stepping up and playing the hero for a moment, opens a new path. Just like the Forlorn Hope here and it letting them slide for being such good boys.

Then from there Kurama's story arc has the same structure we'll see out of Kiku later and Himura Kenshin around the same time. You've come so far by the time we meet you that we can do an arc about confronting that past. But that story can't end with going back to it, can it? No matter what it may mean, it's still so wild for me to see this connection over time. Kurama really was one of my first major anime characters I could latch onto and I've been a One Piece fan for so long. Just can't believe the cutesy waitress we met early Wano had all this in store.

Yeah. I'm with Yuma on this. Makoto is a perilous wildcard. As I've stated before, we know he's against Yomi but we have no idea what he's for. He just spouts platitudes about loving the city and wanting a better future and stuff, while committing to no real specifics.

What we're doing right now isn't about undermining the Peacekeepers. It's about finding the deepest, darkest, ugliest secrets buried in the catacombs of the company Makoto runs and intends to reclaim control over. We may not be allies in this.

Of course, Shinigami's agreement always makes me second-guess my own position. She clearly knows some things about Makoto and may have a pre-existing relationship with him.

I also get the impression that, as much as he talks about Kanai Ward needing detectives, his interest is in Yuma specifically. He barely interacts with the other Master Detectives. When the sub was bombed, he had his men grab Yuma and left the rest to fend for themselves. He's got a suspicious tunnel-vision when it comes to this kid.

You're not wrong, but we're still talking about a secret he might kill us for knowing about. I'm not sure how you bring that up in casual conversation without showing your hand.

Looks like we're doing this. We're going to go talk to Makoto about the secret lab.

We should drop by the sub anyway. Let Yakou know that if we wind up missing and/or dead in the next couple hours, then Makoto knows something about the secret lab that he doesn't want revealed. A random headcanon: see the amaterasu corp headcanon post- oh wait projection time. very often he moves his mouth very little while speaking or outright just forgets to open it and even the megaphone won't help him at that point. if anyone asks he's not above just repeating himself though, this is the man that said "hi this is investigation chief of burroughs seth team or whatever please wake up" like two times and a third but without the magic word and did not threaten to brutally murder one of his men afterwards. compared to all of the other high-rank peacekeepers that guy has the patience of a fucking saint

General Opinion over said character: chapter 1 best chapter right after chapter 5 and it's partially because of the case and halara, but mostly because of that creature. i am very normal about him because my feelings towards the fucker (affectionate) aren't in any way abnormal fuck you. i love that he's alive and well physically (mentally though? doubt) since his picture was never crossed out like all the other dead characters and we never saw him in the restricted area. all is well in the world the sun is shining the skies are clear the borders are open there are no homunculi in kanai ward

Yet another Raincode shitpost:

The NDA VS War-Heads Candy: (or how i think they would react to trying warheads, which for those who dont know are a type of hard candy that comes in a variety of flavors and are notorious for being sour enough to make peoples tongues bleed) Feat. The train gang! & Kurumi

Chief Yakou: gets one of the blue raspberry ones and eats it thinking it wont be that big of a deal. Until the sour kicks him right in the teeth and his face puckers like never before. He nearly spits it out but after being told it's not sour to the core he sucks it up and keeps going. He gets a kick out of it dyeing his tongue as blue as his hair.

Halara: the one who brought the war-heads and thought it would be entertaining to share them with their co-workers/friends and the main one who actually likes them before hand. Purposefully picks two one lemon and one black cherry and doesn't even flinch.

Vivia: the other one who actually likes warheads. He manages three of the green-apple ones before his tongue starts bleeding. He doesn't flinch though which concerns the others. Though he does admit that three at once was a bad idea later. Also finds it amusing that they stained his tongue green.

Fubuki: gets her hands on one of the watermelon ones and as soon as it hits her tongue her face immediately puckers and she tears up. She spits it out and immediately goes for the nearest water bottle looking like a kicked puppy.

Desuhiko: is the dumbass that despite seeing how they affected everyone but Halara and Kurumi, grabs a small handful and shoves it in his mouth. Granted it takes a second to hit but he quickly regrets his decision, however in an attempt to make himself look tough he does not spit them out even if his face betrays him by puckering with tears, snot and slobber all over his face and naturally screwing up his makeup. Finds it hilarious that his tongue got stained black despite the bleeding.

Yuma: his tastebuds are beyond repair from one to many failed and forgotten attempts at cooking. He has almost the same reaction as Desuhiko but to a singular blueberry one. He tries to keep going, he really does and he almost makes it before a certain ghostly someone says something and he coughs it out.

Kurumi: shes the one who can take a handful of war-heads and not only not even flinch, but keeps going until she is stopped. Claims they aren't that sour despite everyone's shocked expressions. Her reasoning being "there are plenty of candies that say they are extremely sour and most of them aren't even close"

Zange: picks out one of the black cherry ones and only reacts because he was not expecting it to be sour. He handles it pretty well, barely flinching especially considering he got one of the more sticky ones.

Fake! Zilch: he casually grabs a few and despite the initial surprise at how sour they actually are finds that he likes them. He keeps going until he accidentally makes his tongue bleed and doesn't bother to check if his tongue has changed color. (They kind of remind him of yomi in a weird way)

Pucchi: she grabs one of the black cherry ones, licks it and immediately refuses to touch it again despite being told it does turn sweet after a bit. Not because she cant handle it, she just doesn't like the taste. The most reaction she gives is a big nose-scrunch

Melami: Much like Kurumi she can also handle a handful of these but instead she actually likes how sour they are rather than being able to ignore how sour they are. She is one of the few who manages to get different bands of color on her tongue.

Aphex: is the dumbass that grabs a handful but instead of trying to take them all at once, takes them one at a time, one right after another and REALLY makes his tongue bleed. He puckers every time he puts one in his mouth but he tries so hard not to show it that he just makes a really goofy face instead. He gets annoyed that his tongue doesn't get stained.

Feels safe!! I also wanna say how Sunne renders is super unique and rlly rlly nice. You can tell the amount of time and effort they put into their works and It's admirable! There's always a lot of subtle details or attention to detail put in wirh textures!

@norts-trolls Nort is super super sweet, really fun to talk with just casually and she's also super fucking funny. I would like to ask about your characters, if you don't mind. I do have a few questions that you, the creator, or the characters themselves can answer. And as a side note, "the characters" will refer to all of your ocs that you have been answering for.

What kind of physical contact are the characters comfortable with? (Hugging, hand holding, etc)

Will there be any context or stories given about the characters and their backgrounds/history? And will we learn about their families?

How far are the characters willing to go in order to get food? (Stealing, fighting, etc.) For more of a clear idea about this, it had probably been during the times where the characters would go for longer than what is normal for them to go without eating. How would they be willing to handle the situation when their hunger is so bad? (This is NOT meant for any inappropriate ideas/responses, please be aware of that)

Vexed : He doesn't really love any form of contact. He's not use to it and also not the cleanest so he'd feel embarrased by it.

Wither : He loves hugs but kisses are a bit much.

Natam : He's also a hugger but since poeple are usually disgusted by him he's a bit shy around poeple. He doean't want to bother anyone.

Vulphy : He'd hate any close contact like any wild animal would.

Timothy : He's not against highfives and casual contacts. But intimate contacts are reserved for those special someone.

Vigilante : He's the type to jump when you touch him. But he's not against contact such as handholding or the occasional hug if you need it.

Ernest : He's cool with whatever ! Kisses, hugs, the whole thing.

Yomi : Nope. Just nope.

Irakus : He was raised as a gentlemen so he won't initiate the contact (Except maybe hand holding) but he is not opposed to it.

2 - I really want to. I've written some script for a backstory of Irakus and others. But I can't make them into (Y/N) fics so it feels like it would be just for me. So I end up giving up on them ^^

3- How far are they willing to go :

Irakus : Not really far. He doesn't want to bother human, so he prefers to starve himself rather than bother anyone.

Vigilante : He would never steal or attack so the worst he'd do would be beg.

Timothy : He would not hurt anyone but he could go pretty far for a meal which is worrisome.

Yomi : He would stop at nothing for food. Kill, steal, trick, anything but giving something in exchange that isn't money or your life.

Vulphy : He is a scardycat so he would threaten poeple for food but wouldn't hurt them.

Ernest : He's a true passifist so he'd beg on his knees and look really pathétique but wouldn't steal or hurt annyone.

Vexed : He would steal and might push and shove poeple but not hurt them badly.

Wither : He can't hurt anyone. He could steal but while no one sees him.

Natam : The worst he could do is reach out and grab passerby pop corn.
