“When people are born they are soft and weak when they perish they are hard and stiff when plants shoot forth they are supple and tender when they die they are withered and dry thus it is said the hard and stiff are followers of death the soft and weak are followers of life when an army becomes stiff it suffers defeat when a plant becomes stiff it snaps the hard and stiff dwell below the soft and weak dwell above” -Lao-tzu- (Taoteching, verse 76, translation by Red Pine) HO-SHANG KUNG says, “When people are born, they contain breath and spirit. This is why they are soft. When they die, their breath ceases and their spirit disappears. This is why they are hard.” WU CH’ENG says, “Seeing that the living are soft and the dead are hard, we can infer that those whose virtue is hard and those whose actions are forceful die before their time, while those who are soft and weak are able to preserve their lives.” LI HSI-CHAI says, “Although the soft and weak aren’t the same as the Tao, they approach its absence of effort. Hence, they aren’t far from the Tao. Although the hard and stiff aren’t outside the Tao, they involve effort. Hence, they lead people away from it.” LIEH-TZU says, “The world has a path of perennial victory and a path of perennial defeat. The path of perennial victory is weakness. The path of perennial defeat is strength. These two are easy to recognize, but people remain oblivious to them” (Liehtzu:2.17). LAO-TZU says, “The weak conquer the strong” (Taoteching: 36). WANG CHEN says, “It isn’t hard for an army to achieve victory. But it is hard to hold on to victory. There is no great army that has not brought on its own defeat through its victories.” HSI T’UNG says, “When a plant becomes stiff, it loses its flexibility and becomes easy to break.” WANG P’ANG says, “In terms of yin and yang, yin comes before and yang comes after. In terms of Heaven and earth, Heaven is exalted and Earth is humble. In terms of Virtue, the soft and weak overcome the hard and stiff. But in terms of material things, the hard and stiff control the soft and weak. The people of this world only see things. They don’t understand Virtue.” SU CH’E says, “As long as it contains empty breath, the body does not suffer from rigidity. As long as they reflect perfect reason, actions are not burdened by severity. According to the unchanging principle of things, the refined rises to the top, while the coarse sinks to the bottom. The refined is soft and weak, while the coarse is hard and stiff.” LI JUNG says, “The living belong above. The dead belong below.” And RED PINE adds, “How different this world would be if our leaders spent as much time in their gardens as they do in their war rooms.”

Top 5 Drama Villains

Inspired by Flower of Evil, I present: My Top 5 Drama Villains (kdrama and cdrama)! there are spoilers.

5.  Jung Hyun Soo, Suspicious Partner

CREEP! Creep creep creep!!!! dong ha absolutely killed (a ha ha) this role. the character has such unnerving/seamless switches between his Normal Human Persona and cold-blooded killer. i think most people would agree that this guy was the best part of the drama

4. Li Cheng Yin, Goodbye My Princess

Hot take, since he’s also the male lead of the series. But Cheng Yin is not only the worst enemy of his wife’s family/nation (and, often, his wife), but also himself. The show centers on his steady descent to the deep end, going from protagonist to anti-hero to arguably the main antagonist, he’s directly responsible for the deaths of some major characters. Taking you on a goddamn ride. 

3. Baek Hee Sung, Flower of Evil

he has great hair and loves lying, but also he’s so scary!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! sort of a pokemon evolution from suspicious partner’s hyun soo, he’s a protege serial killer that rips off thumbnails? the fuck?? and there’s a flashback of him explicitly killing a dog with a blank expression. kim ji hoon does this thing where his jaw is always a little slack, like a small indicator that he is literally unhinged. there’s nothing redeemable about this guy and he freaks me the fuck out

2. Chen Ting, Go Ahead

There’s the stereotypical evil mother-in-law and then there’s fucking chen ting. she’s guilty of blaming her son for his younger sister’s death when he was six, abandoning him for 10 years only to return and fuck up his life even more, using suicide/self-harm as a threat/form of emotional abuse, turning the other away when her son was suffering from chronic insomnia and depression, and destroying photographs of his loved ones for the fuck of it all. and this is just to one son.  and not even everything she’s done. the show tries to make her sympathetic (sort of), but for me she was pure toxic throughout the entire show. i’ve never hated a character more 

1. Kimura Shunji, Bridal Mask/Gaksital

GAKSITAAAAAAAAAAL you want a villain arc, here is a villain arc. shunji starts the series as an adorable music teacher for korean children. he ends the series...not that. the son of a japanese family that descends from samurai during the occupation of korea in the 1930s, what makes him a favorite for me is how earnest he is at the start of the series, and how his motivation emerges from grief. the politics and violence of the occupation make him progressively unhinged--violent, ruthless, obsessive toward the female lead, and, eventually, wanting to kill his best friend. what makes him so compelling is that he has moments of self-awareness/vulnerability throughout the series, but ultimately decides to keep making himself a monster until the end. i fucking love shunji.

special mention: Wang Yo, Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo

so there’s nothing necessarily new or groundbreaking about this guy: standard power-hungry prince willing to do what he needs to in order to have the throne. but there’s something about him that makes him my favorite. likely the aesthetic or just how blatantly and unapologetically evil he is.

But never for the wise (and skilled).

May I and all sentient beings be assured protection.

“When people are born they are soft and weak when they perish they are hard and stiff when plants shoot forth they are supple and tender when they die they are withered and dry thus it is said the hard and stiff are followers of death the soft and weak are followers of life when an army becomes stiff it suffers defeat when a plant becomes stiff it snaps the hard and stiff dwell below the soft and weak dwell above” -Lao-tzu- (Taoteching, verse 76, translation by Red Pine) HO-SHANG KUNG says, “When people are born, they contain breath and spirit. This is why they are soft. When they die, their breath ceases and their spirit disappears. This is why they are hard.” WU CH’ENG says, “Seeing that the living are soft and the dead are hard, we can infer that those whose virtue is hard and those whose actions are forceful die before their time, while those who are soft and weak are able to preserve their lives.” LI HSI-CHAI says, “Although the soft and weak aren’t the same as the Tao, they approach its absence of effort. Hence, they aren’t far from the Tao. Although the hard and stiff aren’t outside the Tao, they involve effort. Hence, they lead people away from it.” LIEH-TZU says, “The world has a path of perennial victory and a path of perennial defeat. The path of perennial victory is weakness. The path of perennial defeat is strength. These two are easy to recognize, but people remain oblivious to them” (Liehtzu:2.17). LAO-TZU says, “The weak conquer the strong” (Taoteching: 36). WANG CHEN says, “It isn’t hard for an army to achieve victory. But it is hard to hold on to victory. There is no great army that has not brought on its own defeat through its victories.” HSI T’UNG says, “When a plant becomes stiff, it loses its flexibility and becomes easy to break.” WANG P’ANG says, “In terms of yin and yang, yin comes before and yang comes after. In terms of Heaven and earth, Heaven is exalted and Earth is humble. In terms of Virtue, the soft and weak overcome the hard and stiff. But in terms of material things, the hard and stiff control the soft and weak. The people of this world only see things. They don’t understand Virtue.” SU CH’E says, “As long as it contains empty breath, the body does not suffer from rigidity. As long as they reflect perfect reason, actions are not burdened by severity. According to the unchanging principle of things, the refined rises to the top, while the coarse sinks to the bottom. The refined is soft and weak, while the coarse is hard and stiff.” LI JUNG says, “The living belong above. The dead belong below.” And RED PINE adds, “How different this world would be if our leaders spent as much time in their gardens as they do in their war rooms.”

CHOM DÄN DÄ GYÄL PÖI KHAB JA GÖ PHUNG PÖI RI LA The Bhagavan was dwelling on Mass of Vultures Mountain GE LONG GI GE DÜN CHHEN PO DANG in Rajagriha together with a great community of monks JANG CHHUB SEM PÄI GE DÜN CHHEN PO DANG THAB CHIG TU ZHUG TE and a great community of bodhisatt vas. DEI TSHE CHOM DÄN DÄ ZAB MO NANG WA ZHE JA WÄI CHHÖ KYI NAM DRANG KYI TING NGE DZIN LA NYOM PAR ZHUG SO At that ti me, the Bhagavan was absorbed in the concentrati on on the categories of phenomena called “Profound Percepti on.” YANG DEI TSHE JANG CHHUB SEM PA SEM PA CHHEN PO PHAG PA CHÄN RÄ ZIG WANG CHHUG Also, at that ti me, the bodhisatt va mahasatt va arya Avalokiteshvara SHE RAB KYI PHA RÖL TU CHHIN PA ZAB MÖI CHÖ PA NYI LA NAM PAR TA ZHING looked upon the very practi ce of the profound perfecti on of wisdom PHUNG PO NGA PO DE DAG LA YANG RANG ZHIN GYI TONG PAR NAM PAR TA O and beheld those fi ve aggregates also as empty of inherent nature. DE NÄ SANG GYÄ KYI THÜ TSHE DANG DÄN PA SHA RI BÜ JANG CHHUB SEM PA SEM PA CHHEN PO PHAG PA CHÄN RÄ ZIG WANG CHHUG LA DI KÄ CHE MÄ SO Then, through the power of Buddha, the venerable Shariputra said this to the bodhisatt va mahasatt va arya Avalokiteshvara: RIG KYI BU / GANG LA LA SHE RAB KYI PHA ROL TU CHHIN PA ZAB MÖI CHÖ PA CHÄ PAR DÖ PA DE JI TAR LAB PAR JA / DE KÄ CHE MÄ PA DANG “How should any son of the lineage train who wishes to practi ce the acti vity of the profound perfecti on of wisdom?” JANG CHHUB SEM PA SEM PA CHHEN PO PHAG PA CHÄN RÄ ZIG WANG CHHUG GI TSHE DANG DÄN PA SHA RA DVA TI BU LA DI KÄ CHE MÄ SO He said that, and the bodhisatt va mahasatt va arya Avalokiteshvara said this to the venerable Sharadvati putra. SHA RI BU / RIG KYI BU AM RIG KYI BU MO GANG LA LA SHE RAB KYI PHA RÖL TU CHHIN PA ZAB MÖI CHÖ PA CHÄ PAR DÖ PA DE “Shariputra, any son of the lineage or daughter of the lineage who wishes to practi ce the acti vity of the profound perfecti on of wisdom DI TAR NAM PAR TA WAR JA TE / PHUNG PO NGA PO DE DAG KYANG should look upon it like this, correctly and repeatedly beholding RANG ZHIN GYI TONG PAR NAM PAR YANG DAG PAR JE SU TA O those fi ve aggregates also as empty of inherent nature. ZUG TONG PA O / TONG PA NYI ZUG SO Form is empty. Empti ness is form. ZUG LÄ TONG PA NYI ZHÄN MA YIN / TONG PA NYI LÄ KYANG ZUG ZHÄN MA YIN NO Empti ness is not other than form; form is also not other than empti ness. DE ZHIN DU TSHOR WA DANG / DU SHE DANG / DU JE DANG / NAM PAR SHE PA NAM TONG PA O In the same way, feeling, discriminati on, compositi onal factors, and consciousness are empty. SHA RI BU / DE TAR CHHÖ THAM CHÄ TONG PA NYI DE / TSHÄN NYI ME PA “Shariputra, likewise, all phenomena are empti ness; without characteristi c; MA KYE PA / MA GAG PA / DRI MA ME PA / DRI MA DANG DRÄL WA ME PA / DRI WA ME PA / GANG WA ME PA O unproduced, unceased; stainless, not without stain; not defi cient, not fulfi lled. SHA RI BU / DE TA WÄ NA TONG PA NYI LA ZUG ME / TSHOR WA ME / DU SHE ME / DU JE NAM ME / NAM PAR SHE PA ME “Shariputra, therefore, in empti ness there is no form, no feeling, no discriminati on, no compositi onal factors, no consciousness; MIG ME / NA WA ME / NA ME / CHE ME / LÜ ME / YI ME no eye, no ear, no nose, no tongue, no body, no mind; ZUG ME / DRA ME / DRI ME RO ME / REG JA ME / CHHÖ ME DO no visual form, no sound, no odor, no taste, no object of touch, and no phenomenon. MIG GI KHAM ME PA NÄ YI KYI KHAM ME/ YI KYI NAM PAR SHE PÄI KHAM KYI BAR DU YANG ME DO There is no eye element and so on up to and including no mind element and no mental consciousness element. MA RIG PA ME / MA RIG PA ZÄ PA ME PA NÄ There is no ignorance, no exti ncti on of ignorance, and so on GA SHI ME / GA SHI ZÄ PÄI BAR DU YANG ME DO up to and including no aging and death and no exti ncti on of aging and death. DE ZHIN DU DUG NGÄL WA DANG / KÜN JUNG WA DANG / GOG PA DANG LAM ME Similarly, there is no suff ering, originati on, cessati on, and path; YE SHE ME / THOB PA ME / MA THOB PA YANG ME DO there is no exalted wisdom, no att ainment, and also no nonatt ainment. SHA RI BU DE TA WÄ NA / JANG CHHUB SEM PA NAM THOB PA ME PÄI CHHIR SHE RAB KYI PHA RÖL TU CHHIN PA LA TEN CHING NÄ TE / SEM LA DRIB PA ME PÄ TRAG PA ME DE “Shariputra, therefore, because there is no att ainment, bodhisatt vas rely on and dwell in the perfecti on of wisdom, the mind without obscurati on and without fear. CHHIN CHI LOG LÄ SHIN TU DÄ NÄ / NYA NGÄN LÄ DÄ PÄI THAR CHHIN TO Having completely passed beyond error, they reach the endpoint of nirvana. DÜ SUM DU NAM PAR ZHUG PÄI SANG GYÄ THAM CHÄ KYANG SHE RAB KYI PHA RÖL TU CHHIN PA LA TEN NÄ / LA NA ME PA YANG DAG PAR DZOG PÄI JANG CHHUB TU NGÖN PAR DZÖG PAR SANG GYÄ SO All the buddhas who dwell in the three ti mes also manifestly, completely awaken to unsurpassable, perfect, complete enlightenment in reliance on the perfecti on of wisdom. DE TA WÄ NA / SHE RAB KYI PHA RÖL TU CHHIN PÄI NGAG / RIG PA CHHEN PÖI NGAG Therefore, the mantra of the perfecti on of wisdom, the mantra of great knowledge, LA NA ME PÄI NGAG /MI NYAM PA DANG NYAM PÄI NGAG the unsurpassed mantra, the mantra equal to the unequaled, DUG NGÄL THAM CHÄ RAB TU ZHI WAR JE PÄI NGAG / MI DZÜN PÄ NA DEN PAR SHE PAR JA TE the mantra that thoroughly pacifi es all suff ering, should be known as truth since it is not false. SHE RAB KYI PHA RÖL TU CHHIN PÄI NGAG MÄ PA The mantra of the perfecti on of wisdom is declared: TADYATHA [OM] GATE GATE PARAGATE PARASAMGATE BODHI SVAHA SHA RI BU / JANG CHHUB SEM PA SEM PA CHHEN PÖ DE TAR SHE RAB KYI PHA RÖL TU CHHIN PA ZAB MO LA LAB PAR JA O “Shariputra, the bodhisatt va mahasatt va should train in the profound perfecti on of wisdom like that.” DE NÄ CHOM DÄN DÄ TING NGE DZIN DE LÄ ZHENG TE JANG CHHUB SEM PA SEM PA CHHEN PO PHAG PA CHÄN RÄ ZIG WANG CHHUG LA LEG SO ZHE JA WA JIN NÄ Then the Bhagavan arose from that concentrati on and commended the bodhisatt va mahasatt va arya Avalokiteshvara saying: LEG SO LEG SO RIG KYI BU DE DE ZHIN NO “Well said, well said, son of the lineage, it is like that. RIG KYI BU DE DE ZHIN TE / JI TAR KHYÖ KYI TÄN PA DE ZHIN DU / SHE RAB KYI PHA RÖL TU CHHIN PA ZAB MO LA CHÄ PAR JA TE / DE ZHIN SHEG PA NAM KYANG JE SU YI RANG NGO It is like that; one should practi ce the profound perfecti on of wisdom just as you have indicated; even the tathagatas rejoice.” CHOM DÄN DÄ KYI DE KÄ CHE KA TSÄL NÄ / TSHE DANG DÄN PA SHA RA DVA TI BU DANG The Bhagavan having thus spoken, the venerable Sharadvati putra, JANG CHHUB SEM PA SEM PA CHHEN PO PHAG PA CHÄN RÄ ZIG WANG CHHUG DANG THAM CHÄ DANG DÄN PÄI KHOR DE DAG DANG the bodhisattva mahasattva arya Avalokiteshvara, and those surrounding in their entirety LHA DANG / MI DANG / LHA MA YIN DANG / DRI ZAR CHÄ PÄI JIG TEN YI RANG TE CHOM DÄN DÄ KYI SUNG PA LA NGÖN PAR TÖ DO CHOM DÄN DÄ KYI SUNG PA LA NGÖN PAR TÖ DO along with the world of gods, humans, asuras, and gandharvas were overjoyed and highly praised that spoken by the Bhagavan.
