MXTX really said: if you write a villian who has suffered abuse and trauma but also does cruel and evil things, the audience is going to divide into people who either say his trauma means his actions were 100% justified or people who say he deserved his trauma because of his later evil actions. When the truth is the villian is both a traumatised victim and guilty of their very evil crimes in equal measure. In fact I'm giving you a specific example so you understand what I'm talking about

I think the biggest problem in the MDZS fandom is that people try to play the Trauma Olympics and push a weird moralist viewpoint where, if you underwent trauma and ended up still being kind and "good," then your trauma is more valid, but if you turned bad or reacted ugly in response to that trauma, then your trauma was "never that deep" or "it was no excuse and you're, deep down, a terrible person who deserves to die." And its strange because MDZS is a story about trauma (a lot of it stemming from childhood, and its easy to forget that they were just kids), and how they manifest in different ways - jc's anger and "hatred" of wwx, xy adopting a "if they hurt me, i will hurt them worse because i am the most important" attitude, wwx refusing to acknowledge his trauma, nhs creating an elaborate revenge plan, etc. - but so many fans are quick to lift up their favs and how they handled trauma while demonizing others. Especially those who react ugly to trauma, like jc or xy, or even jgy (and if we're talking about other books, they do the same to qr, mq, sj, and yqy even if his response isn't as "ugly"). MDZS is a morally grey series, there's no point in trying to force a moral.

And I'm not saying you have to like a character just because they went through a lot or that their trauma can be used as an excuse to ignore what they did (cuz what xy did to xxc was evil even though i love him), but if you're going to talk about trauma and motivation and behaviors about the characters and then analyze them from a 21st century moralist viewpoint where "morally pure" characters have their traumas acknowledged while "morally evil" characters' traumas aren't as important, it's a bit odd and leads to unnecessary fighting.

mxtx is Excellent at writing manipulative characters and the way this is showcased is by how often people tend to argue in favour of the manipulators she’s written. like mxtx sets up these characters to be multifaceted, they openly manipulate the people and situations around them to get what they want, have equally pathetic and sad upbringings to add realism into their actions, and even after all of their deeds are brought forward for everyone to see readers will Still defend them.

you could argue it’s poor reading comprehension and an inability to recognise that the character you latched onto is actually the Bad Guy. but i think it’s more of a testament to how good mxtxs character writing is, that people are willing to defend these people who have wholeheartedly committed unforgivable crimes just bc they’ve successfully manipulated the reader into thinking they had no choice but to murder babies and lie and betray and grab for power.

MXTX headcanons no one asked for!

Xue Yang, Shen Jiu, and Qi Rong would buy the last thing on the shelf if it meant someone else would have a bad day.

SVSSS

Shang Qinghua (Airplane) is either really good at math and was in math olympics as a kid or so bad he has to count two plus two on his hands, no exception.

Shen Yuan was a nerd in middle and high, no one can convince me otherwise. (He was bullied hardcore for it, most likely Pokemon, Yugioh, and D&D.)

Sha Hualing and Liu Mingyan are op in Just Dance.

MDZS

Nie Huaisang would LOVE Johannes and Michael’s.

Xue Yang would love any candy store, especially 5 and Below with all the cheap candy.

Modern day Wei Wuxian most definitely put a whoopee cushion on Lan Qiren’s seat back in his teen years and it worked. (Everybody holding in that laugh, even Lan Wangji and Lan Xichen.)

Xiao Xingchen has gotten odd dreams, nightmares really, his entire life. At first they were normal — just more of what his life was like as a child. Then they got worse, after he began training as a cultivator. It was only as an adult that he started being afraid, not because of what happened to him in those dreams, but because of what that version of him did. He killed, conquered, tortured, and built a harem of a hundred women. His master tells him that they may be memories of a past life, one so strong that it’s leaking over to his next incarnation. He tries not to think about the dreams after that — doesn’t it mean this life is a chance to make up for the bad karma of his first, to become a righteous cultivator and help people? He manages to ignore them for a while — until he meets Xue Yang who looks at him with eyes that are all too familiar from his dreams of torture and a prison cell surrounded by falling acid.
