Day 12: Ineffable Omens - Witchfinder

It occurred to me that we never actually saw anyone ask Aziraphale how many nipples he has, so it's entirely possible he does not know that this is a quirk of the witchfinder army. Which led me to imagine his stuffy shock if he were asked such a question by a stranger, which in turn led to today's ephemera project entry.

The Most Forbidden of Forbidden Territories

Ever since they were children, and later adolescent boys learning how to be men, Trevor had always been close with his cousin. Leon was his elder by three years and the undisputed ringleader of the older Belmont youngsters. Strong and charming, Leon was always ready with a word of encouragement whenever a particular training frustrated them. If he ever abandoned a practice to sulk, Leon always knew exactly where to find him. He was the best of their generation, never condescending despite his status as the eldest, always knowing when to listen and what to say when no one else did. So after Father’s sudden death, after the funeral, as their house plunged into a state of shocked mourning, no one had questioned Leon when he stepped into his eminent uncle’s boots. He kept the estate running smoothly, a task Trevor would have been more than willing to help with, but his cousin would not hear of it. “Take care of yourself and comfort your mother and siblings,” he was told solemnly. “I will take everything else in hand.” And then he had clapped him over the shoulder and fixed him with a subdued smile. In hindsight, perhaps the monumental task of managing the household affairs was a way for the young man to distract himself from his own grief at losing a much beloved relative.

In any case, despite how well leadership suited him, Trevor wasn’t sure if he would ever be used to his childhood playmate sitting where Lord Leonel Belmont had sat not nine months ago. He wondered if Leon ever felt the same, seated in the high-backed oak chair that had formerly been the most forbidden of forbidden territories.

Since inheritance in Wallachia was not primogeniture based, I’ve had the headcanon that the Belmonts’ family head was chosen based on merit and not the accident of being the firstborn. So instead of Trevor becoming the family head after his father's death, it's taken up by his cousin instead for the above reasons.

When I created Leon, I wanted him to be that character who always seems to know what to do, the sort of person everyone can count on. He's self-assured and charming, loves his family and would do anything for them, but this is also the sort of character type who takes on too many burdens without question.

After all, it's scary what a smile can hide.
