i think it would be funny if people occasionally arose from the dead. like if that was a real-life one-in-a-million but well-documented Thing That Sometimes Happens, and the entire legal system around death (laws on inheritance & marriage & murder etc) had to include caveats for the unlikely-but-scientifically-possible event that the dead person in question might spontaneously self-resurrect, even years or decades after death. it would raise so many inconvenient and absurd possibilities

#imagine the legal system in that timeline #property laws and inheritance laws and bigamy laws--what happens if your spouse resurrects 10 years after they die? #think how AWKWARD that would be #what happens if you inherit from someone who comes back do you have to give the inheritance back? what if u used it to buy stuff? #does the jetski u bought with the money your grandpa left u 15 years ago in college now belong to grandpa? #or is there a statute of limitations? #if the guy you got convicted of murdering returns from the dead does your conviction get changed from murder to grievous harm? #how is the grievousness of the harm measured? in the number of years the guy spent as a corpse? #what if you spend 20 years in prison and the victim comes back to life and it turns out grievous harm would have landed you only 5ish years #do you get reimbursed for the extra 15 years u spent in prison? #what is the legal process for proving you have come back to life? #what are the minimum legal requirements for establishing a revenant's identity? #does it become regulation to make fingerprint/dental records of every single person who dies just on the off chance one of them comes back? #what happens if it's someone from like 300 years ago? #the world has changed and everyone they know is dead. is there a social services department that can help with that? #there would be a whole branch of counseling services for people who have reanimated or had a loved one reanimate #grief 2.0 counselors

Okay, so first of all Dan would like to say it’s not his fault. Ellie was the one to bring some unknown object into the speeder and Jazz was the one driving. Or had Sam been driving- didn’t matter! It wasn’t his fault, he wasn’t the one shooting at them, he wasn’t the one to break whatever, he was not the one to open a stupid portal, and so it wasn’t his fault! 

So why is he now like, five years old, and why is the speeder crashed in some sort of corn field. Why is everyone- except for Jazz whose now like six- also like three at most?! And- oh fuck the door just opened and… okay that’s a kid. Like, nine at most. 

A kid and an adult, who he hadn’t noticed at first so again, it’s not his fault if he hissed at them and tried to hide his not-siblings behind him. It’s also not fair they’re apparently stuck to ghost speak for who knows how long, but at least they can understand the people.

saw someone argue that the central defining feature of fanfiction is its attention to proper characterisation. man I don’t think you’ve read very much fanfiction

#I think you end up with these idealistic arguments when you don’t define fanfiction #in relationship to intellectual property law. like that actually is its central defining characteristic & this definition doesn’t make any #claims about quality or content or style (or characterisation) because all of those are variable #so I’m being kind of mean here because I think the op was just trying to describe a relationship between fanfiction and the source material #without grounding it in history or law. so you end up with these silly normative claims about what goes on in fanfiction #anyway not going to link the post I’m referencing because the person was just being mildly annoying on a post of mine #and I was being nosy on their blog. i Genuinely find goncharov (1973) to be a really profound piece of collaborative storytelling and mythmaking and not just A Meme - like it is that, but it follows all these threads that have been human tradition for as long as we can remember, i think.

from mythologies about local pantheons and how the stories have evolved through geography, oral storytelling, and cultural drift over centuries and millennia - there is no One Right Version of the story, because every story is right Somewhere. from, whatever is going on with arthuriana and similar collections of Characters and their arcs. from the entirety of the czech republic playing into the cimrman bit, and kids having to learn that he's not real like he's santa or the tooth fairy. from the way actual historical figures get shrouded in propaganda to a point where what we learn about them is not the real story of what actually happened. from fandom shenanigans with homestuck's squiddles, and, uh, didn't voltron fandom invent a bootleg klance? from superwholock gif collections to the way podcast fandoms seem to soldify character designs for characters who have no canon visual appearance beyond a few precious clues.

i think stories can be Real without being Canon, because where DO any of these lines go? at what point does a character go from being an OC to a Fictional Character? are we not telling a story together? scorsese and license plate matteo didn't make this movie but you've made the movie now, or at the very least the experience of one. and you made something beautiful! you could have made a spiteful and irony poisoned dig at the movie industry and instead you decided to create something beautiful and meaningful.

Danny reveals phantom to his parents. They immediately jump ships to support Danny. That is their baby. Why would they think he was lying? Clearly they let confirmation bias cloud their heads. They have non bias research to conduct!

Unfortunately for them. The GIW does not like this change. Clearly the fentons have gone crazy. They must be mad scientist! The GIW of course reports them mainly to get them out of the way. Can’t have people spreading propaganda that ghost Ms are sentient. They can’t have that.

Maddie and Jack don’t come in easily. Instead they flee. Not letting thier kids get hurt. Of course they locked down the portal before they left. All they needed to do was get set up in a new city. Keep the kids safe after all.

Gotham was to obvious. Why wouldn’t they flee to ecto rich environment. Danny would be to obsessed with hunting down Superman in metropolis. Ever since the reveal Danny had been letting his ghostly instincts out more and more. The whole alien thing would cause to much obsession.

Besides. Technically they were wanted by the government. Couldn’t draw attention with Danny stalking the supers. Which whatever. Maddie and Jack would fight them if it came down to it.

They ultimately decided on central city.

There is enough that happens there to keep eyes off them. They absolutely totally could stay low to the ground. They couldn’t hide out with any relatives. Plus if it came to it. They were certain they could at least talk to the flash before anything violent occurred.

Maybe he would even listen.

For now. They would just prioritize Danny’s and jazzs safety.
