Normally, the sun's rays were wonderfully warming, providing comfort whilst illuminating the dark. It was the hero of many childhood stories, chasing away the grey fog of morning, allowing the protagonists a brighter journey. Promises were even made about it always coming out tomorrow as if it, alone, held the secret to making everything okay. It was a powerful god and some unholy creatures’ most fearsome righteous foe.

However, the sun could also be a deceptive, sneaky bastard.

In Maui, part of the Central Pacific's Hawaiian archipelago, a sunny sky was often paired with a powerful breeze. It lulled unsuspecting tourists into a false sense of security by cooling their virgin skin and leading them to believe they were protected. The sun wished them no harm, surely. I mean, who gets sunburnt without feeling the least bit overheated?

Lots of people talking about winter in the northern hemisphere but if you're from the southern hemisphere like I am, I hope you have a good summer, that you wear sunscreen, that you are safe from storms and floods, may the heat be pleasant but not unbearable. Protect yourself from the sun, drink water (and if you don't like it, drinking juice or soda is better than drinking nothing). Be safe if you go swimming. People have this idea that summer in the southern hemisphere is pure bliss, but the heat is frequently really high to the point of being dangerous, and storms and floods can be destructive. May our summer be peaceful.

Today I noticed that I have wrinkles. But thankfully they were mostly laugh lines. I've had grey hairs for years, but tonight I noticed so many more.

But you know what this means, it means I'm here. I'm alive. And I have survived thus far. That I am both strong and very lucky.

These marks of aging are a crown that I will wear proudly
