Sorry to bother you, but I’m a big fan of Zexal too! Do you have any favorite characters, ships, headcanons, etc.?
Oh, you’re no bother! And thanks for the ask, and sorry if I ramble!
I’d say my favorite characters are Ryoga, Vector, Mizael, Yuma, Astral, and Kotori! I was actually thinking of dying my hair after Vector but having bright orange wouldn't be a great choice...
I ship quite a lot of zexal ships, but I’d say my favorites are...Aztecshipping, Hellshark, Galaxymastershipping, Keyshipping, Foilshipping, and, of course, Actorshipping! (fuya x vector. you don’t get context.)
Most head canons I have are just me seeing others and agreeing, but I like the idea of trans girl Shark! No particular reason, it just kinda makes sense to me I guess. That and trans boy Yuma. I remember I had a dream about that once and just thought it was canon for a while, lol.
Thanks for the ask again!

Do you have any favorite shippings in Yu-Gi-Oh!? I see you have favorite characters, but I can't find anything about shippings.
hiya! idk why i never put my fave ships down. i remember when i was going to, but i never did.
well, that being said i ship a lot of things so like... yeah. i think it's bc i don't wanna name everything i ship but idk. i can't really remember the reason why. but i can tell you some of my ships! i'll just name some from each series.
dm: deathshipping (yami marik x ryou bakura), chaseshipping (tristain taylor/hiroto honda x duke devlin/ryuji otogi), puzzleshipping/blindshipping (yami yugi/atem x yugi), puppyshipping (joey wheeler/katsuya jounouchi x seto kaiba), and of course theifshipping bc they're basically canon. i also enjoy anzu/miho too... bc miho deserves love. again, this isn't all of my ships, if you're curious i'm like... hella into deathshipping LMAO.
gx: rivialshipping gx (jaden/judai x chazz/jun), idolshipping (fubuki/atticus x zane/ryo), kenzan/shou, jim/jun, medici/samejima, johan/edo. i love johan/edo so much, i loved them for YEARS. since i was a child. jim/jun is one of my new fave ships, i think they would be funny and cute <3. idolshipping on top (imo), i loooove fubuki/ryo, i want them to be HAPPY.
5ds: crow/aki, yusei/aki, jack/carly, yusei/kiryu, yusei/bruno, harald/brave/dragan. when i was younger i was super into bruno/kiryu but not so much now. i think they're still cute! but i'm not as into them as now. i swear to god i had more 5ds pairings but i haven't seen it in a bit so my mind is a bit hazy. carly/misty lived in my mind rent free when i was a kid too. i thought they were great. again, i can't think of anything lmao.
zexal: HELLSHARK, i fucking love hellshark. they've been my fave since i was a child and god they make me insane. yuma/astral, mizael/durbe, rio/kotori, iii/gilag, v/kaito, alito/vector. i love ewjhfbwe yuma/astral, they make me wanna cryyyy. and and wejhfbwe mizael/durbe??? I LOVE THEM, but damn hellshark makes me so fucking insane (iv/ryoga)
arc-v: reiji/yuya, yugo/rin, yuto/shun, yuzu/masumi, dennis/yuri, yuto/ruri, dennis/shun, shun/kaito, sawatari/gongenzaka, yuya/sawatari, reiji/sawatari, reiji/yuya/sawatari, crow/shinji, wjehfbwe. i'm super mentally ill abt dennyuri + reiji/yuya JHBWEFBHWE. and in general, shun ships too. like i love shun so much wejhfwe. yuzu/masumi was actually my first arc-v ship!!! so they're still very dear to me <3 <3.
crossover: the ONLY one i'm not embarrassed abt sharing is bruno/jun. i love them so much, like i'm not even joking. they make me SO very happy. yes, it's very random and "crackship" BUT I DON'T CARE I LOVE THEM!!!!! and yes, i do have more crossover ships but wejfhbwe i am shy to share LMAO.
DISCLAIMER: i am a multishipper, and these are like... not all of my ships. basically: if i think they look cute/good/have enough chemistry (or brainrot potential) together, i will most likely ship it. i think multishipping fun and it's fun to see a bunch of couples <3.
so i hope this answers your question!!!

[fanfic] Savor The Display:  Chapter 1
Mizael quite liked the fact that his human clothes – wherever did those come from, anyway? - covered up his arms. He didn’t have to see the names written in elegant markings there. He knew what they said, of course. He’d been able to read them as far back as he could remember.
On one arm, the name was that of his soulmate. On the other, the name of his mortal enemy. Not everyone was blessed with such clear knowledge of their love or their enemy. He knew well that Durbe and Nasch were soulmates – they shared marks that glowed when they stood close to one another.
Or so they had. Mizael didn’t know if they still did, with Nasch being missing. But they were soulmates.
Mizael didn’t know if Alit had a soulmate or not. He’d never said anything, and even when he did talk about something, Mizael seldom listened to him in the first place. He remembered Merag having mentioned once that she saw no color and likely wouldn’t until she met her soulmate. He didn’t envy her that.
He knew very well about Vector’s soulmate.
Humans, and apparently Barians, had an infinite number of ways in which one’s soulmate could be detected or observed or discovered. Mizael’s names were just one of them. For the longest time he’d wondered what the name on the left arm had meant…
He did wonder exactly what humans thought about marks like his, and decided that it wouldn’t do any harm to do some research. Humans were inferior to Barians in every possible way, but they did have a long history of soul-marks, so perhaps someone had written something about that.
Thusly, Mizael made his way to a place he’d heard about – the local library. The unfortunate part of that was that he didn’t know where the library was in the first place. His avenues for information about the human world were few and far between, unless he wanted to grab a random human and demand information.
I think I’ll have to. He had a suspicion that Vector might know, but he didn’t really want to ask Vector, for a multitude of reasons. Amongst those being that he didn’t know where Vector was right now. Probably still in his ‘Shingetsu Rei’ disguise, which Mizael didn’t really approve of to start with.
He cast a few glances around, trying to determine who he could ask. There weren’t many humans around who looked his apparent age and the adults all seemed too busy. Not that such would stop him if he couldn’t find anyone else, but he presumed someone who would be of ‘school age’ would be more likely to have the information he wanted.
A noise caught his attention and he followed where it came from until he stood in a tight, dirty alleyway. His lip curled at the stench that slunk through the air. He’d never seen a place so foul before. Empty boxes had been tossed here, subject to the whims of the weather, and from the lack of light, only one exit led in or out. Tiny puddles of oil-streaked water splattered here and there, gleaming faintly in what little light managed to work its way down there.
That little light also revealed those who lurked here. A half dozen burly humans – the largest of them wasn’t even half the size of Gilag – lounged on piles of boxes, chatting amongst themselves. Mizael regarded them with a definite air of turning around to leave, when one of them glanced up and saw him there.
“Hey, who invited the pretty boy?” That one half-shouted. “I mean, we could use a few more decorations around this place!” He seemed to think he’d made some sort of amazing joke, throwing his head back and guffawing.
Mizael wasn’t impressed. He didn’t know a great deal about humans but he had a suspicion that these people weren’t going to be able to tell him where the library was. That was just his luck.
“Well, pretty boy?” The one who’d spoken leered at him. “Come on over here. I want a better look at you.”
“No.” Mizael didn’t move for a second. Nothing else needed to be said, and he turned around. He stopped a breath later; had he seen someone lurking over there, just out of sight? It seemed nothing more than a flicker of something, but he couldn’t be certain.
He hadn’t really taken a full step before the idiot human spoke again.
“He really is pretty, isn’t he? Bet all he’s good for is -”
Hearing what the human thought brought Mizael back around, hand dropping down to his deck at once. Dueling humans wasn’t really fair; these weren't Kaito, they couldn’t give him anything close to a fair fight, but right now, he didn’t care. For what he’d said, Galaxy Eyes would feed very well. “What did you say?” Mizael refused to yell. He didn’t need to. The earth under his feet shook with the force of his rage. How dare these humans say something so vile about him? Who had given them the impression they could get away with such filth? The human grinned at him. “Oh, didn’t you hear me? Let me repeat it.” “That won’t be necessary.” Mizael bit the words off. “If you think you can speak of me like that, you will regret it. Do you duel?”
“Sure do!” The thug laughed. “I’ve got a perfect win record, too! You want a duel, you got one!” He started to lever himself to his feet.
Mizael looked forward to tearing this idiot apart. He hadn’t yet pulled out his deck before a very familiar arm slid around his waist and he was pulled back against Vector, who dropped a small kiss on his neck.
“You’re not going to have fun without me, are you?” Vector purred. Mizael suspected Tskumo Yuuma wouldn’t even recognize his ‘friend’ Shingetsu Rei right now. “That’s very cruel of you. You should at least let me get some popcorn first.” He laughed softly, breath puffing against the side of Mizael’s neck. “You know how I love a good show.”
The humans muttered among themselves, then the leader laughed even louder than before. “Look at that! He’s got a boyfriend! One of those prissy schoolkids!”
Vector’s eyes glinted softly. Mizael doubted the humans would have seen that, but he did, and he knew what it meant. How much pain these fools were in now depended on which one of them dealt with them.
“Are you my boyfriend?” Vector murmured. His right hand brushed against Mizael’s right forearm. A great rush of warmth swept through Mizael at the contact, even though his clothes. The touch of his soulmate on him – Mizael hated the direction his thoughts turned after that.
“We are soulmates,” he growled the words out. Vector’s name on his right arm, Tenjo Kaito, his mortal enemy, on his left arm. He’d known for ages, but that didn’t make it any easier.
The humans howled even more at that.
“A soulmate?” The leader shook his head, snorting. “What a joke. So, you gonna duel or not, pretty boy?”
Vector stepped back, not even gracing the thugs with a look, regarding Mizael in anticipation. “You take care of this and I’ve got a couple of things to teach you afterwards. Have you ever had a chocolate milkshake?”
“Never heard of it.” Mizael wasn’t afraid to admit that. Humans treats had never appealed to him, but he’d also never spent much time in human form. Perhaps it would be worthwhile to see what pleasures this place had to offer.
“The sooner you’re done with them, the better, then,” Vector promised. Mizael glanced over to the humans, who had no idea of what was about to happen to them.
He wouldn’t make it hurt as much as he could. He wanted this to be quick and clean. It would probably be the only clean thing in this disgusting alleyway.
“Duel!” He snapped the word out, and waded into battle.
Chocolate milkshakes were, Mizael decided, quite a worthy reward for the effort that he’d put in. The thug hadn’t really given him many issues, nor had the two who’d demanded to duel him afterwards. When he’d finished them both off in a two on one duel, Mizael decided that was all he felt like doing. It probably helped that the rest of their gang ran screaming in fear.
Vector took the time to search the pockets of those Mizael defeated, and used that to pay for their treat. Mizael might have cared, if those idiots hadn’t been human and hadn’t insulted him the way that they had. Besides, something useful should be done with their funds. They weren’t using it on hygiene, obviously.
“What are you doing around here anyway?” Vector wanted to know. His eyes narrowed briefly. “You’re not trying to find Kaito again, are you?”
“What if I was?” Mizael snapped back. “He’s the enemy of my soul.” He rested one hand on his left arm. “It is our fate to fight one another.”
Vector made an unpleasant noise before he returned to his own milkshake. “You didn’t answer the question.
“I was looking for the library,” Mizael admitted. “I have something I want to look up.”
That got a very suspicious look from Vector. “What?”
Mizael regarded the depths of what had been his milkshake. Being in possession of a mouth and throat was much more interesting than he’d first imagined it might be. Was this one reason Vector seemed to enjoy spending so much time as a human? He could taste things? Eat things?
It was a much messier form of intake than absorbing energy through one’s gems, of course. But perhaps it did have something to recommend it.
“Mizael?” Vector prodded at him with the tip of one foot. “What did you want to look up?”
He turned a bright blazing glare on Vector, who basked in it briefly, then shrugged. “I wanted to research how humans view soulmate marks. Especially like ours.”
Vector glowered at him. “Why? What else would you need to know? Right arm, we’re made for each other. Left arm, mortal enemies destined to slay one another.” He snickered softly at that.
Mizael didn’t know if Vector had a name on his left arm. He’d never seen it, which he knew wasn’t usual, given their existences in Barian World. But more than once he’d seen the way Vector snickered over the thought of a mortal enemy. Perhaps it was Tskumo Yuuma? It would certainly explain Vector’s long-term disguise of ‘Shingetsu Rei’.
“When are you planning to drop that facade?” Mizael wanted to know. “It doesn’t really get you anything.”
“Oh, you’d be surprised about that,” Vector replied, laughing softly. “But you’ll see what I have planned soon enough. I might even need your help before it’s all over with. You and Durbe both.”
Mizael wasn’t so sure about that. Though if it meant he had a chance to come up against Kaito again, he might go along with it. Power sang through his veins at the thought of Galaxy Eyes Tachyon chewing through Galaxy Eyes Photon once and for all. It would happen, sooner or later. He knew that for a fact.
Vector toyed with a napkin. “You know, there’s a chance that he could see us here.”
“What?” Mizael stiffened a trifle. He cared very little for Vector’s actual plans, but the overall goal to destroy the Astral Messenger and save their world meant more than anything, no matter how little he liked it. He started to get up, but Vector shook his head.
“He’s not here right now.” Vector waved Mizael back down to his seat. “He’s running some after-school errands on the other side of town for his grandma.” Vector’s lips twitched. “Apparently he does this a lot.”
Mizael wasn’t even certain of what a grandma was. Perhaps he would look that up if he ever got to the library. For now he just shrugged. “If you say so.” He was more interested in finding Kaito and finding the information he wanted than anything else. Yuuma was a respectable duelist, but not nearly on his own level. Though he wouldn’t turn down the thought of Yuuma calling Kaito to him.
Vector finished the last of his milkshake, then met Mizael’s eyes. “Are you done?”
Mizael knew that look very well. He pushed his own glass away and stood up. Vector joined him, the two strolling out of the shop and heading away.
Vector knew the city better than Mizael did, and guided him carefully through it, making a point to avoid any gatherings of younger humans. Once or twice he darted down alleyways and less populated thoroughfares, tugging Mizael after him, until Mizael had no idea whatsoever where they were.
They didn’t stop until they reached a long alleyway, more brightly lit than the one they’d crossed paths with those ignorant thugs in. Vector gestured to the far end of it.
“Alit and Gilag’s place is down that way. Are you staying there?”
Once again Mizael’s lip curled upward. “Why would I stay with them?” He would if he had no choice, but his first preference would always be to return to Barian World. Technically speaking he wasn’t supposed to do that until the mission had been finished. Being able to control feeble human minds meant he could acquire lodgings wherever he chose.
Vector’s lips twitched the tiniest fraction. Something pleased him a great deal. Then, without warning, he grabbed hold of Mizael’s collar and slammed him against the nearest wall. He crushed his lips hard against Mizael’s.
Truth to tell, this was the first time in his entire life that Mizael had ever kissed anyone. He’d never had lips before. Feeling Vector’s against his wasn’t something he’d ever thought about. It sparked a rush of heat to flow through him, and he started to lean into the kiss, as something began to intrude against his lips.
Tongue? He’d managed to get used to having a tongue. It was useful to speak with in this form. But he’d never thought about using it in kissing.
He wasn’t sure if Vector had that much experience in kissing, but he clearly knew what he was doing, and as far as Mizael could tell, they were both enjoying the situation a great deal.
Mizael focused so much on Vector’s lips on him, on the way that his hands traced against Mizael’s own skin, that he almost didn’t hear the quick footsteps, or the sudden sharp gasp of breath. He only noticed something as off when Vector broke the kiss and stepped back, turning towards the end of the alleyway that they hadn’t entered by.
“Yuuma-kun?” Vector sounded different, a little higher and quivering. Mizael turned to see Tskumo Yuuma standing there, packages dropped around his feet, staring in surprise and shock. Astral wasn’t there, which worried Mizael a trifle.
“Shingetsu??”
To Be Continued
Notes: Vector does love a good show – even if he has to arrange for it himself. More than once…

Zexal Month Week 4 Day 1
Ships, ships, ships, and vehicle appreciation
I only have one OTP so far and it's :
Dilateshipping aka Mentorshipping
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
... who had gone through many stages of classic angst romance. From first cute meet, tragic separation, bitter reunion, and then reconciliation and happily ever after ending. Yeay.
While pairs that I like and find interesting :
1. Keyshipping (Astral x Yuma)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's canon and no one can convince me otherwise.
2. Tomoshipping (Shark x Durbe)
Tumblr media
Of course I can't forget this compromising position.
Indeed Shark's knight who always come to rescue, right?
Tumblr media
3. Foilshipping (Yuma x Vector)
Tumblr media
Alternate name = Rollercoastershipping
4. Decisionshipping (Mizael x Durbe)
Tumblr media
They are literally the sanest Barians before Nasch and Merag come back. And how they hold each other back whenever Vector doing something that get on their nerves.
5. Blackmistshipping (Black Mist x Astral)
I will never get over the "possess your body" part.
6. Sharkbaitshipping (Shark x Yuma)
Their whole dynamic from the start to the end of the series is *chef kiss*.
7. Dokidokishipping aka Photonshipping (Kaito x Yuma)
Seriously, we need more of this ship.
8. Seraphshipping (Alito x Yuma)
The "imagining Yuma as angel" part and "meeting you was hot" is truly iconic.

Vector from zexal
favorite thing about them: Well, if we're talking about his deck, Number C104: Umbral Horror Masquerade is easily my second or third favorite Chaos Number. If it's about him personally, I like how he takes the ZEXAL trend of having absolutely insane villains, and taking it to 11. He did what Tron did to his kids directly to Yuma and the Barians.
least favorite thing about them: His deck. Umbral Horror has been an awful deck since it came out, and hasn't received any new cards since Primal Origin, and if I'm being honest, those cards seem to counteract with the ones that initially came out with their literal first and only other line of support in Judgment of the Light. Seriously, Star Seraph, Cipher, and even Tellarknights can summon Masquerade, and yet, they don't, because they have better combos. Umbral Horror struggles with surviving past Main Phase 1.
brOTP: Vector and Mizael. There's no evidence to support this. I just think they'd get along because Mizael hates things that aren't Dragons and Vector likes causing infinite trouble, including murdery trouble. This may cause hijinks to ensue.
OTP: Don't really have one. If I had to choose, it would be Vector x Mizael. Mostly because I imagine it'd turn out something like this:
Vector: My heart's on fire for you.
Mizael: *irritated blush*
Vector: LITERALLY! BAH-HAH-HAH-HAH! *detonates a bomb*
Mizael: This date was going JUST FUCKING FINE until you busted out the TNT!
nOTP: Vector x any of the younger ZEXAL cast members. I'm certain I don't need to explain why a multi-thousand year old alien hooking up witn middle schoolers is a bad idea.
unpopular opinion: I don't exactly know about the consensus about the ZEXAL fandom, but, I think Vector is easily the weakest Barian Emporer. Most of his actions are done without the need for a Duel. If he were to Duel to progress the plot, instead of try to manipulate and use Don Thousands power, he would be dead or close to after every Duel. Hell, his deck plays like garbage. Like, why else would he call basically Satan to give him an ally and power boost.
Song I associate with this character: "I'll Get You Next Time Gadget!" By Famous Last Words.
favorite picture of them
Tumblr media
I love this homicidal goober

3/7 Ruins: Legend of Souhachi Kiraku
1 2 x 4a 4b 5 6 7
So the reason I wanted to group Gilag and Alito together is because Alito has plenty of substance in his ruins while Gilag is just,,, Hnng they would've balanced each other out but nope, heres Gilag's Ruins
Tumblr media
So uhh Gilag is supposed to be a joke Barian Emperor. I get that. He’s the first to be fully revealed and he starts off as an imposing threat for, like, two episodes. Then he goes off???? draws manga and watches anime and lives in the school gym and he has no brain cells as clearly evidenced by the Friendship Game episode but also he kills.
Being such, Gilag has the shortest stick of the Emperors (almost on par with Merag but she has a prominent connection to the main Barian Emperor narrative). I’m not being figurative by-the-by. He has ONE episode to cover the legend of his ruins while the others get two episodes minimum, Nasch got like five total or something, so I can see that the writers,,, did not really care about Gilag. Which is unfortunate, but this is going to be my most out-there analysis because of the situation.
Tumblr media
Unlike the other Emperors who have new settings for their ruins, Gilag’s ruins is the Duel Lodge.
This isn’t a new location nor does it reveal that much about his character (after all, the Lodge was meant to develop Yuma and Astral’s character during their first visit in season 1 and nothing new happened to this place during the Mythyrian Arc.)
But this means he should have the closest connection to Rokujuro and Yamikawa, but to my knowledge, the writers didn’t do anything with this aside from Gilag being the one who kills them during the Barian Onslaught Arc. Maybe there could be a connection to how Yamikawa felt betrayed by Rokujuro during the first season of Zexal. He attacked him, and then they made up soon after. This is similar to the story of Ponta and Gilag, but there isn’t much parallelism besides “two close persons becoming distant before making up”.
The most important outcome of the ruins is the reveal of the Mythyrian Guardian, Ponta the Tanuki, and Ponta is what this essay is going to be mainly about.
Tumblr media
Like most of the Emperors, the Guardians often play a role in their legends. More often than not, the Guardians are the Mythyrian Numbers; they are tasked with protecting the Emperors (Mach, Abyss, and Jinlon are the clearest examples). Ponta is the strangest one because he is the only Guardian to exist as his own physical entity. This is seen in the show’s finale. He’s able to exist as himself without being attached to the Number card, and this may seem strange until you consider what happens in the Legend of Gilag (or Souhachi Kiraku if you want to get technical)
Tumblr media
Gilag’s legend is a bit tough to grasp because there isn’t a single narrator.
In the text of the show, Rokujuro reveals that Gilag was a benevolent, smart, and powerful warrior during the Sengoku Era (which is characterized by military and social conflicts). He distributed his wealth from his conquests with the peasants rather than horde it with his vassals.
From Ponta, we find that Gilag found Ponta in the battlefield, saved him, and they formed a friendship. Ponta became his Kagemusha (a doppelganger/shadow warrior) and helped him win his battles. He was the one responsible for all of Gilag’s fame and fortunes. He says that Gilag was jealous of his strength, got rid of him,and then perished in the battlefield. Keep in mind that Ponta isn’t omniscient, and he clearly resents Gilag when he says this, so this source should be taken with a grain of salt (The episode is called “Yuma Confused!? The Unreliable Account of Gilag the Tanuki”).
From Gilag, it was discovered that the vassals were unhappy with him distributing the wealth, and they were going to rebel against him. To protect Ponta, Gilag forced him to leave so he could deal with the rebels. He ends up presumably dying in a burning building.
Finally, upon freeing him from the curse, it is revealed that Don Thousand influenced the vassals to rebel against Gilag, and in order to fill him with hatred over the betrayal, he placed the Over-Hundred Number “Number 106: Huge Rock Palm - Giant Hand” in his heart, allowing him to pass onto Barian World. It ended with Gilag perishing in a burning building with the rebels cornering him.
Tumblr media
So what happened here?
With the Emperors, I strongly believe that the personalities they have as Barian Emperors are an extension of true personalities as humans (compare this to when Gilag and Alito got an extra dosage on Don Thousand, for example). With Vector, a major personality-changing curse was embedded into him at such a young age that his evilness is part of his true personality (or as said by Yuma, the “kind” Vector still exists as Rei Shingetsu), while most of the other Emperors inherit their curse shortly before their death. What we see now is most likely how they were originally, plus maybe a thousand years of them as Emperors.
So Gilag is, according to Yuma, “a despicable bastard, stingy, and an annoying jerk”. From his schemes in the show, we clearly see that he is not smart. All of his plans fail, he lacks foresight, and he gets distracted very easily. But he also cares deeply about his bond with Alito. This bond was strong enough to knock Don Thousand’s curse out of him. So this makes it tough to decipher the actual story because the Gilag of the present is nothing like the Gilag of the past.
Using this information, I can say that each narrator has elements of the truth. I believe that Gilag is strong and passionate about things he loves (idols, manga, and his country I presume), but he’s arrogant and has more brawn than brains. Gilag is only as strong as his plans are (under the orders of Nasch and Don Thousand, he usually gets the job done without an issue. When he has to make his own decisions, yikes). Meanwhile, I believe that Ponta is the one holding most of the wisdom, strategy, and brains.
Tumblr media
Together with their strength and wisdom, they balanced each other and created the Legend of Souhachi Kiraku.
Also, bear in mind that Gilag has the only legend that has a non-Barian name attached to it (Legend of The Cursed Royal Palace, Legend of the Gladiator, Legend of the Dragons, and Legend of an Ancient Hero). The Legend of Souhachi Kiraku isn’t the product of Gilag or Ponta, but Gilag and Ponta.
From here, the rest of the words spoken by Gilag should be true. He said he “completely made it up”, but he also muttered “how did I know about the legend?” afterwards to tell the audience that what he said is indeed true. The reveal of his actual memories reaffirms this.
So the true story is that Gilag and Ponta worked in unison to defeat their enemies. They distributed their wealth among the peasants. The vassals were angry that they weren’t receiving the spoils from the battles, and with the influence of Don Thousand, the vassals plotted to betray Kiraku (as in Gilag and Ponta). In order to protect Ponta, Gilag banished him and sent him away. Gilag perishes in the rebels’ fires. Ponta later dies of old age.
With Don Thousand, he interjects into the story at two points. First by influencing the vassals to turn on Gilag, then again by placing hatred in his heart.
Tumblr media
Why I think Don Thousand comes in twice is because the first instance wasn’t enough to alter Gilag’s fate as a Barian.
For Gilag, the satisfaction of saving Ponta meant he could still ascend into Astral World; as long as his best friend was safe, he was unfazed by vassals rebellion. Don Thousand went in one more time to induce hatred into him, sealing his Barian fate as he perished. This is most similar to the fate of Mizael (influenced the people to turn on Mizael and Jinlon, and then implanted hatred into his heart as he died) opposed to, say, Vector whose single personality swap set him straight for Barian World, or Nasch who didn’t need to be injected with hatred or altered like Mizael or Gilag; his entire life sucked so badly (due to Don interfering with Vector and Merag, yes, but he did not touch Nasch at all) that he chose to go to Barian World.
Enough about the other Emperors though, let’s talk about the Guardian of the Mythyrian Number, Ponta.
Like most of the Guardians, Ponta is both the Guardian and the Mythyrian Number “Number 64: Veteran Tanuki Sandayu”. And although I try to keep the discussion in the realm of the original/OCG, it should also be noted that in the TCG, this card’s name is “Number 64: Ronin Raccoon Sandayu”. Veteran means experienced fighter, and Ronin means wanderer, or a warrior without a master. In both cases, it describes what Ponta represents in his relationship with Gilag.
To those unaware, Ponta is based on an extant animal known as the Japanese raccoon dog, or tanuki.
Tumblr media
Ponta himself is not a regular tanuki as he is based on the yokai, Bake-danuki. Bake-danuki are known to be the cunning, trickster type whose main trait is transforming into other apparitions. Despite this, they are also associated with good fortune (which they carry in their massive fucking gonads), virtue, and strength. Most of these traits can be seen within the Mythyrian Number that represents Ponta, or more importantly, the tokens that it spawns.
Tumblr media
These “Kagemusha Tanuki Tokens” hold most of the Bake-danuki traits which I am now taking from Wikipedia because they summarized better than I can:
Tumblr media
These tokens also have the ability to turn into the strongest monster on the field (appropriately transforming with a leaf) too. Anyways, Tanuki legends are really fascinating and there is a lot of information on them, go here if you wanna learn more (this is a really cool site in general, especially if you wanna read about yokai and other neat things).
Despite being his Guardian, Ponta loathes Gilag, blaming Gilag for his own death as well as Ponta’s fate as a Kagemusha. He hates that Gilag got all the credit for the Legend of Souhachi Kiraku while Ponta was banished and locked away in a statue with Gilag’s face on it. All in all, Ponta wants to be his own being. He no longer wants to be a Kagemusha, a shadow, for a man he despises.
Instead, and hear me out, I think Ponta wants to be the actual Gilag.
This can be seen in how he treats the Mythyrian Number as well as his interaction with Gilag. Ponta’s first action upon meeting Gilag was, ironically, stealing his body. This is strange for a creature that doesn’t want to be remembered as someone else, and then he becomes that exact same person. However, it should be noted that Ponta’s name isn't revealed until the very end of the episode, so perhaps he isn’t interested in letting people know that he’s “Ponta” at all.
Tumblr media
He was content going forward in life as Gilag.
And remember, Ponta died during the Sengoku Era (1400s-1600s), so he was trapped in the statue of Kiraku for at least 400 years. During this time, he was referred to as only Kiraku, never as Ponta. After so long, after 400 years of never hearing his real name or being recognized as himself, it isn’t a stretch that Ponta doesn’t see himself as “Ponta” anymore. He sees himself as a shadow of Gilag, and so he made it a plan to be the real Gilag if he ever gets the chance, or at least, be in his body. Hence, he took over Gilag’s body.
Even when he hijacked Yuma’s body, he preferred being in Gilag’s body so much that he swapped back after he finished cheating.
Tumblr media
You can see this in how he uses his Mythyrian Number, too. Like most of the other Guardians, Ponta is the Guardian and the Mythyrian Number, “Number 64: Veteran Tanuki Sandayu”. During the duel, Ponta utilizes “Veteran Tanuki Sandayu”, the true warrior, while the “Kagemusha Tanuki Tokens” are Ponta’s shadows. This is made more apparent when the tokens (which normally turn into any monster on the field with the highest attack points) turn into copies of “Number 64: Veteran Tanuki Sandayu“, mimicking his relationship with Gilag.
Tumblr media
Ponta wants to see himself as an actual warrior with Kagemusha of his own, rather than the other way around. He even becomes concerned when Yuma attacks his Kagemusha.
Tumblr media
Personally, I see this sequence as Ponta having a sudden detachment from his dream of “being Kiraku”. Deep down, he still sees himself as a Kagemusha, and so when he sees the destruction of the Kagemusha Tokens, he also sees this as a destruction of himself.
When he finally loses, he mutters, “I’m not a shadow, I’m not a shadow,” almost as though he internalized this perception of himself while desiring nothing more than to reject it.
Ponta knows that he isn’t the true Gilag, but after half a millennium of being a Kagemusha to Gilag, I don’t think he knows who he is anymore.
Tumblr media
This changes when Gilag gets his human memories back and approaches him. Upon telling Ponta that “you’re Ponta”, Ponta appears surprised to hear his actual name. By hearing someone speak his name after 400-something years, Ponta finally sees himself as his own person again.
And believe it or not, this idea falls into why he exists as his own raccoon dog after the show ended.
Ponta decides that he can be his own person. He doesn’t need to be tied down by Kiraku or anything else. This is why he willingly leaves Gilag’s body and detaches himself from the Mythyrian Number.
This is evidenced when Astral absorbs the Number first, and then Ponta emerges from the body; at this point, Ponta is no longer a Guardian but simply a Tanuki.
Tumblr media
Also, if Ponta is still the Guardian/Mythyrian Number, then Gilag should’ve received the “Number 64: Veteran Tanuki Sandayu” when he eh-hem,
swallows Ponta.
Ponta comes back later, of course. Along with the Mythyrian Number, Alito and Ponta, Gilag’s two best friends are used to free Gilag from Don Thousand’s curse.
Tumblr media
They even make up afterwards.
Tumblr media
And before anyone starts, I do not know why Ponta is still friends with Gilag after all of this.
Like really im not joking. im not saying that ponta is that type of raccoon, but if my friend ate me, id be kinda pissed ngl
like maybe these scenes?? Gilag sent Ponta away under the pretense of hoarding the fame for himself. After finding out Gilag died, Ponta was devastated. He cried for a moment, saying that Gilag would still be alive if Ponta wasn’t banished. But then he convinced himself that Gilag deserved it.
Tumblr media
Ponta obviously cares for Gilag despite how big of “a despicable bastard, stingy, and an annoying jerk” he is. Ponta also says that he would’ve preferred dying with Gilag in battle rather than be sent away. Ponta clearly sees something in Gilag that makes him worth fighting for.
Maybe Gilag has a good heart under his questionable tendencies.
When Ponta loses the duel with Yuma, the immediate reaction of Gilag tells us that he is very concerned over the safety of Ponta, but then he retracts himself, like he remembers he’s supposed to be tough and emotionless.
And to be honest. Ponta could be like, like “hey, my buddy Kiraku, getting mind controlled by Don Thousand really sucks, might eat me because he’s a little grumpy-grump, it happens you know, no big deal”.
They get drunk together.
Tumblr media
It’s the Sengoku Period. They probably do a lot of stuff off-screen like Gilag usually does with Alito. Maybe having an occasional fallout or all of that is normal. I truly don’t know.
What I do know is that Ponta is able to complete his arc at the end of the show. Without being tied down as a Kagemusha, a Guardian, or a Mythyrian Number, he is able to exist as a physical being in the modern world.
Tumblr media
So Ponta has a complete character arc. Not complaining, but I do wish that the ruins has more to do with Gilag himself. The information on his past life is interesting enough, but the story is more about Ponta than Gilag. And what we found out about Gilag’s current life is... alright.
Tumblr media
The connection between his Mythyrian Number and Over-Hundred Monster is minimal. Aside from being both Earth Monsters, I do not see any connection between the two nor why its a giant hand. “Number 64: Veteran Tanuki Sandayu” kinda features Gilag and Ponta as a warrior and a Kagemusha, which I thought is neat.
Tumblr media
The most disappointing thing is that the writers didn’t do anything with the concept of Gilag being possessed by Don Thousand. I mean, Alito went absolutely berserk. Like from baby child to unhinged bloodlust. Gilag is—he’s just Gilag, that’s just regular Gilag i swear. Like, maybe Gilag on steroids the second time, but Don Thousand looks at this guy eating live raccoons and said “ssssshyyeah, I don’t need to fix this one.”

Zexal month Day 2: Kattubingu brings us together
I have many favourite characters, but only few of them really really holds a special place in my heart, and those people are:
Kaito Tenjo, Haruto Tenjo, Droite, Chris Arclight, Ryoga Kamishiro, Rio Kamishiro
But I need to mention the Seven Barian Emperors and some families for sure
There were so many other interesting characters but I don't know why I didn't get attached to it...
Kaito Tenjo because...
Tumblr media
Kaito Tenjo is a great character! Who doesn't love him? He was such an iconic character from day he appeared on the screen of my TV. I pretended to hate him but who was I kidding? My heart melted everytime I saw his face (exception of when he does the world domination pose lol). Apart from his amazing hair and very very handsome face, let's talk about his character. I love everything about him, I really love when he roasts Yuma and Shark and snaps when Heartland arrives again in Zexal II (oh the insults were priceless) but I mostly love his other character shown to people who he cares about, his caring side. He is also very selfless, proven when he was fighting for Haruto and in the moon. I also love his egao and pride XD but it can't never reach the level of egao Mizael has for himself. I could go on and on but let's stop here.
Haruto Tenjo because...
Tumblr media
Do I need to say more? He such a cute and a sweet kid! He is the unlucky kid who developed the illness and this had led his father, Dr. Faker to cause many outrageous stuff, and Tron/Vetrix to lead more outregeous stuff. And who could blame him? He wasn't himself, what he did to the Astral world wasn't him, he was operated to survive with what Vector given them, and also lost every memories and his father and Heartland controlled him ;-; This is such a tragedy, everything he went through, but it was only to cure him. He was a kid and deserved to live. His caring character also makes him so lovable, his worry towards his brother, chocolate and everything is so cute! :3 And omg, he loves butterflies, and he also had a butterfly deck in the manga, yeet
Droite/Dextra/Dolowa because...
Tumblr media
I know she is a secondary character and her character is very undeveloped but she holds a special place in my heart, I think it's because I always imagined how she could have been used based on her character. I really really had hope that she could beat Tron/Vetrix but my heart was broken at the end. But hell I loved how selfless she was, and so accepting! I don't care if she's older than one year, Priyanka Chopra is 10 years older than Nick Jonas and they got married and do you think I am gonna even care 1 year age gap! And I loved how caring she was towards Gauche, they had a beautiful brother and sister relationship and my thoughts were confirmed in Zexal II in the italian dub. She is also a very cool and collected person. I also loved her roasts to Yuma, like Kaito XD Droite is a rare type of character, she threatened Kaito (who fled away XD) to protect him against Tron, and later on, he really did lose. She also holds into those memories to feel strong! Strong enough to not have her memories taken easily. Maybe they didn't show in the dub but in the sub, before Nasch activated the card 7 Barian Force card, Dumon said "You're a tough one" so she really had a chance against them. But her lack of screentime and her role really reduced her to a minor character, like many other characters. But really interested me is her past, which made me theorise and think more. But she really did change my world and I am grateful that she's one of my top favourite female characters.
Chris Arclight/V because...
Tumblr media
He is such a great character! The Arclights, in general, were great! In complete honesty, I hated him when I saw him the first, and all the other Arclights except for Michael/III. The reasoning of their revenge was so flawed, I mean I know you hate Dr. Faker for what he did and want him to feel the same way you feel, but why do that?! Kaito and Haruto did nothing to you and don't make things worse for them than it is, don't even dare to put hands on my precious babies! Of course, Tron is a villain so be it, but V? How could he? He was Kaito's mentor and he should know how he feels, the sons are not to be blamed for what their father has done. But after I saw the good side of him, I calmed down, and I actually got to like him and imagining all sorts of comical scenes inside their livelihoods in my head XD I got to love him as a character after I saw the roleplayers tbh. But then Zexal II came out, and their return made me so excited and loved him teaming up with his disceple and how much they humiliated Mizael for the first time in his life in a duel XD
Kamishiro twins because...
Tumblr media
They are also my precious babies and I love both of them individually and together because they are one of the best siblings in my list.
Ryoga was just another school bully antagonist that becomes a good boy at the end... or that's what I thought. But I had no idea that he would be Yugi Muto 2.0, I mean he wasn't only the leader of the Barians, but was also a king, and was reincarnated into a human body, sounds familiar right? XD
But he is a great person inside, loves his sister to death, lots of egao XD, and he's so goddamn serious that everyone imagines comical scenes with him either with his sister, Barians, the trio they are (Yuma and Kaito), and Arclights obviously IV (I know you do don't lie). I also love his deck and his caring side towards Yuma, everyone finds him gay but I find that he's a trustworthy bud like any great friend, or Yuma would have died by now and they needed to make his caring side consistent. I know he betrayed Yuma in the end but deep down inside he was chasing him all along... oops sorry wrong line!-
Now let's talk about Rio. She was the only female who was treated fairly in Zexal II and I loved her sass and the way she handles her brother and speaks over him XD It's hilarious her phobia of cats but completely neutral about snakes. Her backstory is sad and she died like 3 or 4 times??? Forget about writers treating her fairly but I intended the role ^^ I was about to dislike her because they easily changed their minds and when they find other suspicious but they were their enemy now, but I never could dislike the Kamishiro's, they were just too precious and understood how they felt.
The 7 Barian Emperors
Tumblr media
I love them lol.
I love Alito and Gilag's humour.
I love Mizael and his egao.
I love Dumon's precatious nature and his friendship towards Nasch
I love Vector's trolling side but dislike him as a person ^^' but I loved the one before he was cursed. Hey don't come at me it's just an opinion 😢 I don't like him as a person but I find it funny! Exception for his past, which was brutal. All of them has sad backstories, which made them more interesting and intriguing. I also dig in a bit looking into the location, the writer's did a pretty good job I would say and I found out more about them.
Now favourite friendships
Yuma and Astral: Do I need to say more???
Yuma x Ryoga x Kaito: They are the best tsun trio buds ever!
Kaito x Chris
Shark x IV
Kaito x Mizael: They are more like rivals but hopefully they will become friends
Alito x Gilag: They are just hilarious 😂
Rio x Tori
Favourite families
-Tenjos, Tsukumos, Arclights, Kamishiros
Okay, this blog is longer than it should have been so I am going to stop right here now ^^"

durbe x watermelon-chan
Durbe had finally done it. After hours of travel, market to market, he had finally found the perfect watermelon. It sat serenely among its peers, dew on the rind glistening in the pink light of the setting sun. A wave of satisfaction overwhelmed him, making him smile as he paid, the watermelon cradled gently in one arm. This summer night party would be perfect.
The others greeted him ecstatically as he pulled into the wildflower field. Alit was quick to drag him over to where Girag was setting up the fireworks, seeking approval as the others arranged the table and prepared the food.
Rio’s voice caught his attention. “Hey Doob, where’d you get this melon? Something feels…. off about it.” She seemed to be thoroughly examining the large watermelon, rotating it and tapping at the shell. He shrugged and laughed it off as one of her superstitions– the family he got it from was nice, and all of their produce seemed respectable. She dropped it quickly at his assurance. They were here to relax.
But before the fireworks, there was one more tradition. Mizael tapped the bat in his hand a few times, as if testing the weight. Alit put the melon on the ground as Vector produced a blindfold. Appraising the situation, Mizael pushed the bat into Durbe’s hands. “You’ve spent so much time organizing this, it’s only fair you get the fun of breaking the melon.”
Vector snickered as he blinded Durbe with ease, then spun him around till he was good and dizzy while the others cheered. Wobbly on his feet as Vector stopped him and pointed him vaguely in the right direction, Durbe’s muscle memory kicked in. He steadied his stance, raised the bat high above his head as if it were a gleaming sword and–
The bat smashed down, the rind cracked easily– but what burst out was not sweet juices nor chunks of fruit. Blood splattered the Barians closest to the beaten melon, Durbe drenched in dark red. Instead of watermelon, weird organs slid out of the shell and pooled in the grass, shards of bone scattered amongst them from the skull that had been contained inside. What remained of eyes and brain oozed obscenely from what was left, a tongue lulling from between the slack jaws.
Shark was the first to speak.“Oh god what the fuck”

Pyra is also working on a feedback post/page so all of you can submit what you thought about this month and any suggestions for days you can add as well.
Due to unforeseen circumstances, the admin formally know as Mizael had to leave social media for therapy and recovery.
As I said everyone who sent me their info for the Content Creator Showcase information will get their info posted here again. So make sure to check them out and support their work. :)

All the multiples of 4 ^^
4. What’s your current NOTP? I’m actually really chill with most Zexal ships!! If I had to choose, though, probably Vector and Yuma. Kaiba and Jonouchi is also a constant NOTP of mine.8. Have you ever shipped yourself with a character? I did as a kid, and, embarrassingly, I still do. I have a DMGX era self insert I ship with Mai that I never talk about. It’s like Carol, but with more card games.12. Have you ever been disappointed when your ship finally got together? ….I honestly don’t think I have any ships that have gotten together. Minus, like, Judai and Yubel.16. Talk about a ship you initially disliked. Phoenix Wright and Miles Edgeworth was something I wasn’t big on at all for a really, really long time; I always felt Phoenix would have been better with Mia in an AU where she lived. Then I met my (now) girlfriend and saw how much the pairing helped her. I kept an open mind to it when replaying the games a few years ago, and ended up falling for the ship. Since we’ve entered our relationship, I’ve ended up becoming majorly into it, which is something I never imagined would happen.20. Talk about a ship you feel alone in shipping. Kaede Ichinose and Ichigo Hoshimiya from Aikatsu! is a big one; they have a lot of development together towards the end of the first season, only for minimal expansion from season 2 onwards. It’s a rarepair in the Japanese fandom, which makes it beyond obscure in the miniscule western fandom. I feel lucky to know one other person who ships it.24. Do you mostly ship canon pairings? Ha ha, no. The only canon pairing I ship is Judai and Yubel from GX. That, and while I don’t “ship” for Utena, I have a very deep appreciation for the canon relationship between Utena and Anthy. But I consider that different than shipping.28. Does shipping come easily to you? Yep! I’m very drawn and prone to shipping, though there are some exceptions.32. Share five must-read fics.
Floriography by Lirillith: HeartCatch PreCure, Cure Blossom x Cure Sunshine. Post-canon oneshot; Itsuki putting together a bouquet of flowers to confess to Tsubomi. Anyone who knows me well knows that HeartCatch majorly shaped my identity and made me who I am today. My identity as a lesbian is no exception; when I was 15 I had a major crush on Itsuki, and Tsubomi’s canon crush on her helped me feel more comfortable in liking girls. This fic does a really good job on showing things from Itsuki’s PoV: While she looks cool on the surface, she’s majorly out of touch with her feminine identity and doesn’t know how to express her emotions, making her an awkward wreck. It’s absolutely adorable.
Hot For Justice by indirectkissesiniceland: Ace Attorney, Klavier Gavin X Apollo Justice. Post Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney/Gyakuten Saiban 4, Klavier goes through a slump in his career until he starts getting to know Apollo better. A fic I’m sure is on most Klapollo fic rec lists; Hot For Justice hit me because of how eerily similar it played out to my own headcanons on how Klavier and Apollo get together. It’s wonderfully written as well – the scene of Klavier bluntly telling Apollo his feelings in Chapter 25 makes me cry every time I read it, and I strive to write a scene that can impact a reader in my works the way that one impacts me. My only complaint overall with HfJ is the few scenes where Kristoph is portrayed as a loving older brother to Klavier, which thankfully are few and far between.
Grasping Sunshine by Rosage: Ace Attorney, Sasha Buckler X Athena Cykes. Post Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies/Gyakuten Saiban 5 oneshot; Athena starts volunteering for the whale show at Ship Shape Aquarium and realizes her feelings for Sasha along the way. This ship is one of my favorites from Ace Attorney, and, sadly, probably my most obscure. This fic handles their relationship really well, and shows off a lot of little nuances in both characters that are big reasons as to why I think they’d make a wonderful couple.
Operation: Find Kaito Tenjo by Brushfire: YuGiOh Zexal, Kaito Tenjo x Mizael X V, with focus on Mizael X V and Kaito X Mizael, along with Shun X Haruto. Set in an Arc V AU before Kaito was confirmed to cameo; Kaito is kidnapped by Academia shortly after the events of Zexal and used to work on carding technology. Several years later, Heartland is a wasteland and Mizael and V have retreated to Kaito’s villa in the mountains to help raise Haruto. In their struggles to keep Haruto safe and fend themselves from Academia, their only goal is to get Kaito back. Sadly on indefinite hiatus, this fic has a lot of really, really strong things going for it: the relationships between all of the characters are really well handled, the premise is strong, and it is overall executed very, very well. While it is an Arc V AU, the author has confirmed the fic is more of a love letter to Zexal than anything else. It has at least some inspiration for my own fic, Ad Astra, and I have accepted the headcanon of Kaito being Alcor with open arms (albeit in different ways than she has, and I don’t know if it will come up in any of my fics).
Heartland City By Night by Fenikkusu_Ai: YuGiOh Zexal, Kaito Tenjo X Mizael. Post-canon oneshot, Mizael stays with Kaito after being revived. This fic shows that quality is better than quantity. Not even reaching 200 words, the language the author uses is absolutely gorgeous, and creates a very serene and emotional atmosphere. I can’t believe I forgot to kudo/bookmark this fic before writing this list, because I have read it so many times and consistently been blown away.
36. Do you create fanmixes/gif sets/fanart/fic/fanvids and so on for you ships? I’m an artist and fic author for sure!40. If you could change one thing about your OTP, what would that be? I’m pretty satisfied with MizaKai in canon minus their lack of onscreen closure (which I can fill in the blanks for anyways), so I’ll go with a different OTP.Hey Capcom: What the fuck have you done to Klavier Gavin and Apollo Justice in the newer games.

[fanfic] Not Very Bright
Vector's opinion of Mizael could be summed up very succinctly. Just one sentence was all that he needed. Not even a full sentence, but just five words: pretty, but not very bright.
No one could argue the first part. Mizael was, by and large, the most attractive of the Barians by human standards. Not that most of the others weren't good looking as well, but Vector knew a reasonable amount about how humans thought after pretending to be one for a few months, and he knew if Mizael had shown up at school in all of his golden-haired glory, then a large amount of the female population would've stopped to swoon.
More than a few of the guys would have as well.
But Mizael did not figure large in his own personal plans, all things considered. He wasn't someone Vector felt a need to either control or get rid of. Durbe, Nasch, Merag, those three needed to be disposed of as soon as he could. Gilag and Alit would be useful pawns, nothing more.
Admittedly, he rather enjoyed knocking Alit around, mostly because Alit actually liked Yuuma, the idiot.
But Mizael...Mizael, Vector had decided, had other purposes that he could serve once everyone else had been disposed of. There weren't but so many uses that someone as pretty as he was could serve, after all. He would allow Mizael to settle his little disagreement with Kaito, if only to make certain that Mizael didn't have anything else distracting him afterward.
Just to be safe, he also checked with Don Thousand. The Barian God might have plans of his own, though exactly what use Mizael could serve for him, Vector didn't know. Better to ask, just to clear it out of the way.
One could not imagine how thrilled Vector was when Don Thousand agreed that Mizael was not vital to anything and once all of their enemies had been disposed of, then Vector could do with him as he wished.
Vector made a list at that point. Mizael's pride offended him, first and foremost, because what reason did someone so useless have for pride at all? So he would get rid of that. It might take a while, but Vector wouldn't have any other long-term projects at that point so he could afford to invest the time.
Perhaps he would braid Mizeal's hair, among other things. It would annoy him so much, and Vector did so like annoying him. It would be something to pass a few hours doing.
There would be dueling, of course, but in a setting where neither would risk their life. Vector enjoyed doing so, but he had no plans to let Mizael slip away from him like that. What would be the fun there? And it would be so nice to stomp all over Mizael's pride like that, too.
Yes. That was the sticking point: Mizael's pride. It would have to go. Vector looked forward to shredding it and seeing what he could make of the remains. He had an idea that it wouldn't very different from what he had to play with now. Still pretty. Still not very bright.
But his all the same.
Vector liked to play rough with his toys. And Mizael would not break easily. All the better, really, since it meant he could play longer.
Just perfect.

[fanfic] Fair Won Prize:  Chapter 1
It wasn’t much of a tavern, really. One room, a dozen or so tables scattered around, all of them battered and knife-scarred, and the chairs set before them not that much better. On one side a fireplace kept the room warm, or made a reasonably good attempt at such anyway. The chimney was in good enough condition that the smoke wended its way out of it instead of into the tavern itself.
Vector sniffed at the sight of it, lip curling. “There isn’t anywhere better?”
“Not around here,” Durbe replied, catching the eye of the tavern owner and gesturing him over. “And not that we could get to before that storm breaks.”
“Are you sure it’s going to be a storm?” Vector wanted to know. He wasn’t pouting by any means; this place just looked like trouble waiting to happen.
Vector had no problems with trouble. He just preferred to be the one starting it.
“Gilag is and that’s good enough for me,” Alit said, hands on his hips. “You wanna argue about that?”
Vector sniffed once again but subsided, for the most part. He followed the rest of the group over to the largest table, suitable for seven people only if they were close enough to one another.
Vector made a point to sit next to Mizael. He’d made a point of doing that everywhere they could for the last three months, since they’d formed their little band of adventurers. For one thing, Mizael was the absolutely prettiest of the seven of them, and Vector saw no reason to deny himself an attractive view.
Sitting here also provided him with the chance to remain hidden from most of the other people in the tavern, because they weren’t alone there. With Mizael in his sight and the various groups of thugs, mercenaries, and dimwits out of his sight, Vector thought spending the time of the storm here might be tolerable.
“What can I get for you fine folks?” The tavern owner asked once they’d settled in. “Gotta tell you, we probably don’t have what high-born folks like you are used to.”
Durbe offered a smile. “You might be surprised what we’re used to. But a good round of ale should do for a start.”
Mizael cleared his throat and Durbe chuckled. “I’m sorry. A round of ale for everyone else and if you have some sort of wine, my elven friend here would much prefer that.”
The tavern owner peered at Mizael, who peered right back, head held up high and with a light tilt to his head, asking without words if there were some kind of issue to his presence there.
“A genuine elf? We don’t get many of your – we haven’t seen too many elves around here in the longest time,” the tavern keeper declared. Vector did not like the sudden switch of words, nor did he like the way the keeper kept on staring. Granted, Mizael was attractive, but he was also Vector’s.
He just hadn’t gotten around yet to admitting it. But Vector had plans on that score.
Before the tavern keeper could scurry off, Gilag raised his hand for attention. “Could you bring me some water?” His hand dropped back down, petting Ponta, and the keeper’s gaze followed that way, blinking at the sight of the tanuki.
“O-of course, sir! I’ll be back right!”
He hurried out of sight, eyes still a little round in surprise. The tavern just had one room, but a curtain hung in between the majority of the room and where he presumably kept his stock of liquor. They could hear him moving around back there, pouring out ale, wine, and water.
“So you’re an elf.”
Vector turned back to see half a dozen grungy guys, who looked as if they at best had a nodding acquaintance with a toothbrush and a comb, but probably hadn’t bothered to see a tailor about mending their clothes in some time. Patches and stitched up tears were all done in a very slapdash, haphazard fashion. But to make up for that, every one of them stood a minimum of six feet tall, with muscles on top of muscles, and they all wore nearly identical sneers.
The one in the front, who’d spoken, had his eyes burning toward Mizael, who barely gave them so much as a look. Alit, however, grinned mischievously.
“You’re an elf, Mizael? Why didn’t you tell us?” He reached over to poke at the blond. “Do we really know you, then?”
Mizael rolled his eyes. “I would’ve thought the evidence would be obvious.”
The leader of the intruders glowered at them both. “I was talking to him. No one said you could interfere.”
“You were talking at him,” Ryouga said, his voice dangerously quiet. “I don’t think any of us are interested in a conversation with you.”
Mr. Muscles – as Vector mentally dubbed him, for lack of neither knowing nor caring what his actual name might be – glared at them all, rolling his tattered sleeves up to expose his arms. “I wasn’t talking to you, either!” He took a better look at Ryouga, then started to laugh. “What are you, some kind of a musician? Get out of here with that kind of junk.” He turned his gaze back toward the others. “Can any of you put up a decent fight? It gets boring around here when the weather gets bad.”
He sneered for a moment. “Well, any of you except the pretty elf and the musician.”
The looks exchanged were quicker than lightning and ended with Ryouga rising to his feet.
“Oh, no, I said not you!” Mr. Muscles laughed raucously. “I wouldn’t want to break your delicate hands!”
Ryouga sounded more annoyed than anything else. “If you want a fight, you’re going to get it with me.”
The whole bunch of toughs laughed even harder. Mr. Muscles shook his head and cracked his knuckles hard. “Well, if that’s the way you want it. Just don’t blame me when you can’t warble a tune or play an instrument anymore.”
Vector leaned forward, a gleam of mischief in his violet eyes. “Let’s make this more interesting. I’ll wager a silver that Ryouga puts you on your back in under three hits… and that you never lay so much as a finger on him.”
Mr. Muscles stared at Vector as if he’d never seen someone like him before. “You’ve gotta be joking! What, are you new?”
One of his buddies leaned forward as well. “I dunno, boss, I think we should take his money once you’re done.” A greedy smirk twisted his lips. “I say we take all of his money when you’re done.”
Vector smirked right back at him. I am going to kill you. “Let’s see how this fight comes out first.”
Mr. Muscles and Ryouga moved to the center of the room, Muscles’ minions moving the other tables and chairs out of the way to clear a space. Muscles flexed.
“Remember, all the pain you’re going to have is your own fault. Don’t blame me for it,” Muscles declared. “Got it?”
“Got it.” Ryouga looked more or less bored with the whole thing. Vector wondered where their ale was; it couldn’t take that long to pour out their drinks.
Then Muscles threw a fist at Ryouga, a hit that if it had connected would’ve probably hurt most people.
Ryouga stepped back and moved around, still looking as if this were the worst way to spend an afternoon he could think of, and not out of fear of being beaten up.
Muscles snarled at Ryouga’s near-effortless dodge, and the three or four that followed. “Stop running away! You’re not fighting!”
“All right, if you insist.” Ryouga shrugged before he powered one fist directly into Muscles’ chin, packed with every ounce of his strength behind it.
Muscles blinked. His eyes slowly rolled up to the back of his head and he fell over, not moving. One of his toughs dropped down next to him, hand to his throat. Vector approved of killing a leader while he was down. Perhaps this one showed a little sense.
Then the tough moved back. “He’s alive. He’s just out like a candle.”
Vector mentally sighed. It was so hard to find good assassins these days.
Then he smiled, looking at the rest of them. “I believe I won our wager. Hand over my money.” His eyes flicked from one to the other of them. “I think one silver from all of you will do.” And it would pay for their drinks, too, once the tavern keeper finally brought them out.
Two of the toughs dragged Mr. Muscles out of the tavern while the one who’d spoken up before now started to count out pieces of silver. Vector recounted them openly before he swept them into a neat stack.
“All right. The fun’s over, go away now.” He gave a little flick of one hand before he settled back into his dark cozy corner, quite satisfied with events so far.
The tavern keeper hurried over, carrying their drinks on a tray, and settled it down on the table in front of them. “Sorry for taking so long,” he apologized. “But I heard what was going on and I didn’t want to get in the middle of it and mess your drinks up.”
Ryouga shrugged, reaching for one of the mugs – which at leas looked clean – and tossing it back so fast Vector doubted that he even tasted it. “Sorry for any damages.”
The tavern keeper only shrugged. “Bejt and his group do that kind of thing whenever there’s new people in town. I’m used to it. Your drinks are on me tonight, and just tell me when you want to stop.” He turned toward Gilag, mouth open to ask something else, and froze.
Gilag set the bowl of water he’d been drinking from on their table, while Ponta peered up from where he held the mug of ale in his own paws. The tavern keeper blinked, rubbed his eyes, and then hurried out of sight, leaving them to their drinks.
“I don’t care how much money he could bring in if he’s a real bard,” Bejt growled, staring into the spotted mirror and trying to decide how much of what he saw was because of the low quality of the glass and how much was from that one hit that ridiculous musician landed on him. “I’m going to kill him and I’m going to have fun doing it.”
One of his assistants reached as if to pat him on the shoulder and got a death-glare sharp enough to cut paper from his efforts. He pulled his hand back and managed a quick smile. “Of course you will, boss. Doesn’t matter how good they are, once they finish drinking the good stuff, they’re not gonna be going anywhere we don’t want them to.”
Bejt grinned, showing a mouth that wasn’t nearly as full of teeth as someone without his lifetime of brawling would have. “That elf’s not going anywhere, not until I’m done with him. I’m going to have some fun and then when he’s nice and obedient, I know a goodplace to sell him. He’ll make us enough of a fortune to last for the next twenty years!”
“Are we sure this is a good idea?” One of his other assistants spoke up, a nervous twitch to one eye. This wasn’t surprising; Olan twitched about everything. “I mean, they’ve got horses. And one of them is a winged horse. And all that armor. And weapons.” He shuddered, ducking his head. “They look like they know how to use them.”
Bejt shrugged. “They wouldn’t be the first traveling mercs we’ve taken down. Won’t be the last, either.”
“I don’t think they’re just mercs. I mean, winged horse?” Olan shuddered again, staring up at his boss. “I think they’re heroes.”
“Yeah, right.” Bejt snorted. “The whole bunch of them don’t look like they’re together enough to kill a slug, let alone a dragon.” Heroes did things like that. At least they had in all the stories Bejt had ever heard. Killed dragons, rescued princesses from ravening monsters – or monsters from ravening princesses. He’d heard a lot of weird stories.
But that bunch? A musician, a pretty elf, what looked like a priestess, some short kid with maybe half of Bejt’s own muscles and too much of a sense of humor for Bejt’s tastes, someone in armor who might’ve been a down on his luck knight, some guy who had even more muscles than Bejt did but spent his time talking to some sort of fuzzy raccoon thing, and that idiot in the back who never let anyone get a good look at him.
That wasn’t what heroes were made out of it. Heroes had lots of good armor and didn’t stop in places like this, no matter what the weather looked like.
They might’ve thought pretending to be heroes would keep people off of them, but Bejt wasn’t most people. Once they had two or three rounds of the house special, they wouldn’t be awake enough to do anything at all.
That brought his thoughts right around to the pretty blond elf. Elves lived a very long time, he knew, and he couldn’t help but wonder what that elf had done in his life and how much he could be taught. Bejt looked forward to keeping him for at least a few years. He’d need to get properly trained before he could get sold, in order to make the most money, didn’t he? Bejt hadn’t ever trained someone before, but it couldn’t be that difficult. Smack ‘em when they did what Bejt didn’t want them to do until they learned better, that was it
It would definitely be a lot of fun. He looked forward to finding out just how much fun it was. He’d always had an eye for pretty faces of every kind, and there weren’t too many people prettier than an elf. He’d never had the chance to have one like this before, and he looked forward to finding out what it would be like.
All he needed was another hour or so, and then he and the others would be set for life.
Vector sniffed at the mug, then set it back down after taking a tiny taste of the ale. He’d never been much of one for drinking in the first place, at least not drinks that came from places like this. He wondered if it would be too much to ask if one of their mage-types could do something about the storm so they didn’t have to stay here at all.
We could get some decent food and drinks somewhere else. Maybe even a good bed. He knew that being on the road didn’t entitle him to the comforts of home, but they could at least have some comfort of some kind.
He leaned his head back against the wall and winced at the shock of thunder that rolled on by a heartbeat later. No one else looked bothered by the rain at all. Gilag sat on the outside of the table, closest to the door, and from the way he kept looking out there, it wouldn’t have been too surprising if he got up to wander out there. Druids did things like that, soaking up the rain. Vector had no idea of why druids couldn’t invest in some kind of weather protection. Maybe it was a religious thing.
He’d never wasted his time on religion and until he’d come to join this group, he hadn’t associated with religious types of any sort. But traveling with a druid and a priestess meant that he got more than he’d ever wanted of the whole concept.
He let his gaze drift back to Mizael. He could think of one or two gods he’d like to thank for the creation of the elven race and for Mizael in particular. Along with one or two he’d consider offering up a tribute to in order to get the elf compliantly in his bed, without risking Jinlong having him for dinner or the rest of the group getting furious at him.
Which meant he would have to keep on courting Mizael so that it was all willing on his side.
He wasn’t used to having to ask for what he wanted. Or who he wanted. He’d commented once at breakfast that he’d seen an attractive person the day before in the marketplace and that evening, that same person awaited him in his bed, courtesy of his father.
That had been an enjoyable few months, all things considered. If it had been possible, or workable with his father’s plans, he didn’t doubt that he would’ve already enjoyed time with Mizael.
I think this might be more interesting, though. Frustrating, but enjoyable in the end, once he’d achieved his goal. There was something to be said for getting something desired by hard work instead of being given it.
Vector glanced to the others again, the sound of the rain battering against the side of the building, making it plain they weren’t going anywhere right now. He suspected Rio and Gilag would both insist that they shouldn’t try to mess around with the weather, something about natural causes and not interfering. That made no sense to him at all. What good was magic if you couldn’t use it to twist the world around to the way you wanted it to be?
His eyes narrowed suddenly as he took in what was going on with his companions. He wasn’t surprised to see Gilag’s eyes drooping, let alone Ponta’s, not with that rain. If it didn’t call a druid out to dance in the rain or whatever, it would probably put them to sleep.
But Ponta spent so little time being visible when they were in civilized territory that Vector almost forgot he even existed. There he was, having finished his ale – you’d think a magical creature would have better taste than that! - and now curled up on Gilag’s lap, sound asleep.
Vector checked on Alit: already asleep. Durbe was as well, eyes closed and chest rising and falling evenly. Ryouga still had his eyes half-open, and Rio looked as if she were fighting off the urge to sleep herself.
He looked at Mizael then, and knew something was wrong.
Elves don’t sleep. Not like that, anyway. Mizael had explained it once, but Vector had been too wrapped up in admiring the way the sunlight glinted off the elf’s golden hair to pay attention. He sort of wished that weren’t true now.
But Mizael’s eyes were as tightly closed as the others, even as Ryouga’s slid all the way shut, and Rio followed him into slumber in another few moments.
This wasn’t right in the slightest. Vector’s thoughts raced before he chose his path, closed his eyes, and let himself sag a little more, as if he’d succumbed as well. There wasn’t any use in trying to wake them up. They’d be too sluggish to do anything for too long. Not to mention, Vector had a feeling he knew who was involved in this, and he swore he’d paint the walls with their blood.
He couldn’t see what was going on, but after what felt like forever, he could hear footsteps entering, and a sense of shadow fell over him. He kept himself from moving, no matter how much he wanted to, and listened.
To Be Continued
Note: And now we return to the world of the Order of the Outcasts. This is that little interlude piece to explain something. A larger piece revolving around Yuuma, Kaito, Haruto, and Astral will come at a later point, on SilvorMoon's profile. But until then, I hope you enjoy this.
