We remember legendary Oak Park musician Cliff Johnson, who passed away last month at the age of 70. Learn more about Johnson's music career by watching this short video, where Val Camilletti, the late founder of Val's Halla Record Store, discusses Johnson's success with the powerpop band Off Broadway. This video was created in 2016 by Village of Oak Park videographer Joe Kreml.

SUPERLATIVES!! 11, 15, 24, andddd 50!
WHO...
11. ...is the biggest flirt, or has had the most romantic stuff going on?
Biggest flirt is definitely Halla. Will hit on anything hot and mildly intelligent. Sammy's a close second. As for most romance going on? In an actual campaign, probably either Noa, who fell in love with the daughter of a tribal chief after saving her soul from being trapped in an inanimate object, or Daga, who had a sweet budding mututal-crush thing with Mirik, a lizardfolk cleric in the party, until Mirik sacrificed himself to ensure the death of someone who would have handily killed the entire party, thus plunging Daga into grief, depression, and rage. I think Noa wins.
15. ...lies the least?
Dring. They often don't see the point. People will find out anyway. They grew up in a large, close family unit of kenku where anything overheard could be perfectly repeated, so someone always found out your secrets. But also they don't like lying all that much. They're just a very honest bird.
24. ...would win a battle royale with all the others?
OH JEEZ. Honestly? Probably Sammy. Assuming level 20, Sammy's resistant to all damage but psychic while raging (double-resistance to fire damage), and also, uh, they're kind of the favorite of a goddess. A minor goddess, certainly, but she's very much still a fuckin' deity, and she loves her Samsam.
50. ...is or was your favorite to play in combat?
HMMM. Toss-up: either Daga or Cohr. Daga because they did all their attacks singing, and Cohr because as a knowledge cleric they were pretty fucking versatile. Only thing they couldn't really do was stealth.

Races of Halla: The Human
Been a while since the last lore document but this one is a relatively simple one to write up and explain. Today we will be discussing one of the most popular races in the Val-ley universe, the Human.
Humans exist on pratically all contintents of Halla save for the frozen hellhole of Owias and humans can be seen as the modern ancestor of the majority of the other races. So the question is... how did humans come to be on Halla to begin with?
For that, we have to first discuss how Halla was discovered to begin with. Long ago, in a younger era of the universe an mysterious being born from the star known as the Dark One and his six followers arrived at this perfect world in the corner of the Milky Way galaxy. These beings are known as Ones and they are largely responsbile for creating life in the universe.
For this, Ones are terrorital beings and they often fight if they get into contact with each other, but six of them is quite unprecented. However, this would not last as one known as Valakos would betray the rest, killing two of the six Ones and attempting to plunge Halla into a firey age, intending on creating his own species made of rock and lava.
This would drive the Dark One to shatter Valakos and it is said that the Dark One was either banished, or drove himself into exile after killing Valakos.
So during this Valakos rampage and the death of six Ones, Halla became drenched in their blood that would become soaked up by the atmosphere of both the planet and the two moons (Nimara and Hilel respectively).
This connection somehow became interwinned with a planet on the other side of the galaxy, a small planet known as Earth, but not just the Earth of this dimension but all variants of Earth, past and future.
Before long, a phenemeom began to occur on Earth where people who fell asleep found themselves to have awoken all across Halla (and yes, that even extends to the ocean) and over a period long before a calander system was introduced. It is said when it occured, large swathes of people from across Earth would disappear at random points in time and history, missing people cases and entire colonies on forgien soils just disappeared without a trace, only to wake up somewhere in Halla.
However, despite Humans suddenly appearing on Halla, to their surprise they were already humans here and on the far off distance continent of Eden, the elusives elves existed in their land of Gaia never to be disturbed.
Humans that were born on Halla and along with humans that arrive on Halla are biologically and physically the same and this blurs a line between the two groups. Some cultures such as the Vallum Empire attempted to show their superiority over the Earth humans but this largely failed as most humans that arrived on Halla either have to adapt to their surroundings or spend their life chasing for the life they lost.
Humans began arriving on Halla roughly 18,000 years ago and there have been notable Earth figures that have influenced and shaped Halla. One of which is the founder of the Vallum Empire, and later God of Control, Tohovok who was an Earthling from the 11th century Holy Roman Empire in the central germanic speaking world.
He was formely a priest who respected God and converted his new found hometown of Orbeck to Christianity. Over time, he became more respecting of the ancient Vallum gods and the customs, of course he realised it too late when he was fighting a crusade of his own making. His death is marred in a layer of mystery but his death led to his sons begin to view him as a diety than the founding of an empire, leading to his acension as a God sometime in the 3rd century of the Tohovok Imperial Calander.
Along with this, another example is Nawaar al-Qazi, an formerly Sunni Mulism girl that had been a wife to an nobleman somewhere in the Arabian peninsula who arrived in the Poian desert sometime in 573TIC, becoming a friend of an local mayor after saving him and his village from an aggressive Emir who had recently claimed the surrounding land. Over time, she began to respect the Glypto and the Scorpios of the Himli desert. Like with Tohovok, she had united the desert region and ended the racial divide between the Glypto, Scoprios and the humans that called the desert home and she felt enpowered by no longer being a wife to some nobleman and her new-found freedom led to her become reveared as a goddes of War.
Needless to say, Earth-born humans have a profound effect on Halla, shaping their culture and allowing for technological advancement that otherwise wouldn't be possible and since humans continue to pour into Halla, their influence will never leave aslong as there is an Earth.

Just saw Thor Love and Thunder and I need to talk about it so read ahead at your own risk.
First of all, i love the fucking goats they are the star of the show.
Okay now onto the movie. I loved it. One of the funniest and most heart wretching films I had ever seen. The casting is always incredible with Taika films and they did another amazing job. I am so happy to see Natalie Portman return.
I will say that her Jane Foster with cancer was not a surprise seeing as though that is what happened in the comics. However I was surprised to see her death at the end of the film. I truly thought that it was going to follow the comics and have Jane become the new Thor and the og Thor would either die or step down. Her death did make me cry but it was nice to get a proper closure for Thor and Janes relationship and even finding out how they broke up in the first place.
Thor in the film was hilarious and I loved to see his growth as a character. To see his struggle with depression and PTSD and even take advice from Peter Quill who is someone we have learned he does not have the best relationship with. Him learning about the corrupt power system in what im guessing was Mount Olympus because i do not remember what it is actually called was incredible. Him learning that he was on his own and would ultimately have to face this fight alone was somewhat sad but seeing him literally rip one through Zeus was amazing.
Valkyrie my true king, I love you. She is the best character in this series and seeing her go one on one with Gor??? Incredible. I literally was about to cry because i thought she was dead but im glad she lived. Also when she kissed Zeus' maid on the hand i was dying because I wanted that to be me.
Korg had mw sobbing. This dude literally almost died and then ended up making a baby with a man named DWAYNE? Adorable. 10/10.
Also fucking Axel??? HEIMDALS SON??? YES PLEASE HE WAS ADORABLE!! Iloved his interactions with Thor and I see him playing a huge part in the future movies.
Christian fucking bale this man scared the fuck out of me. He is the creepiest MCU villain thus far. He does an amazing job portraying the same character with split personalities after being corrupted. His character was complex and really dug into religion as well for it being a marvel film. With it being a controversial topic right now I think that many will not take to it lightly. However his performance was incredible. Another masterpiece for him and another DC actor converted to marvel.
But seriously the ending threw me through a loop. With the way things were going in Eternity, I truly thought that Jane and Thor were going to raise his daughter together. But seeing Jane die in Thors arms like that? I was sobbing in the theatre.
The first post credit scene somewhat confirmed for me that thor was going to die soon. With Zeus still living and calling upon Hercules its kinda a given. Will Herc kill Thor? Most likely. Will Herc live? I doubt it. I think that they will end up either killing each other or Thors new niece will end his life.
The second post credit scene. This had the whole theatre gasping. Imagine it. Everyone is talking, sotting around, waiting to see if the lights turn on or if there's a second post credit scene. Then, the gold sparks appear on screen. Within a matter of two seconds, everyone was back in their seats and the theater was silent. We see Jane appear at the Gates of Val Halla. And who is there to greet her? Heimdal. Literally everyone gasped when seeing him. And sadly, after Jane had lost her battle with cancer, she was allowed into the great hall of gods, who have all lost their lives in their own battles.
Overall this was my favorite thor movie. I love Natalie Portman and Chris Hemsworth on screen together. They have great chemistry and work so well together. Im happy she was able to get a proper farewell for the franchise and got the proper treatment she deserved for her work. I cant wait to see what comes next when Thor returns.

"How… does this work, exactly?" Briala asked, with curiosity as well as some trepidation. They had retired early and arisen before dawn, eating quickly and packing up their things into the wagon for the journey. Lanaya's aravel was one of the larger ones Briala had seen, all painted wood with intricate carvings and designs. It appeared much too wide to pass through even much of the outskirts, never mind the dense forest into which they ventured. The back, which featured long covered benches that could function as seats or as beds, was entirely covered. The front was open to the air; a wooden frame allowed draperies to be hung over this part as well, but Lanaya had pulled them down so they could see all around them as they traveled. "I have heard about Dalish magic, but…"
"It's simple, really." Lanaya had taken the front seat in the wagon, with Briala and Talith seated behind her. "You've seen that the trees often move of their own accord. The forest lives and breathes, and as Keepers we learn its rhythms, until it moves for us as well."
"But the trees are possessed by spirits. Is that how…"
"We do not use spirits, no. Spirits have a will of their own, and can present a danger to us even if they do not intend to. Keepers study the natural world as well as the power of the Beyond, and the how the one can be reshaped by the other. It is the manipulation of primal forces, not possession or blood magic."
Gheyna and Cammen had finished hitching up the halla, now and they tossed their elegantly-horned heads, eager to get on the move. There were only three, which seemed insufficient to Briala; a carriage of this size in Val Royeaux would have been drawn by at least two large draft horses, and the halla were considerably smaller. Perhaps this too involved magic. Briala climbed into the open front, and Talith sat beside her. Still feeling a bit nervous, Briala welcomed the comfort of her wife's hand in hers. She wondered if Talith felt the same.
Lanaya stood before them at the head of the aravel, and spoke some words in Elvish to the halla. Briala could not make them out, but the creatures seemed to understand, quieting their restless movements and standing ready and attentive.
Gheyna and Cammen, having finished tending to the halla, stood aside, hand in hand, and Gheyna waved. "Dareth shiral, Keeper. Talith, Briala, dareth shiral. Sylaise ma ghilana vhenas."
Cammen added solemnly, "Dareth shiral, Talith. Elgar'nan ma ghilana, lasa mala enasalin."
At that, Talith's expression grew solemn as well. "Ma serannas, lethallen. Dareth shiral."
Briala recognized a few words. Dareth shiral, "Safe journey." Vhenas, enasalin. And the names of the elven gods. Gheyna had bid the Hearthkeeper guide them safely home. Cammen had wished them victory—in the name of Elgar’nan, the god of vengeance.
She was still unsure whether she believed in the elven gods—if she believed in any gods at all—but Briala sent up a silent prayer of her own anyway.
Lanaya raised her staff only slightly. Her back was to Briala and Talith as she began to weave the magic that would aid their journey, and Briala could see only a soft green glow emanating from the crystal set unto her wooden staff. With her off hand, she seemed to weave the magic into form; the glow grew before her, and then dispersed like a cloud, sinking low to the ground and seeming to disappear into the earth.
The halla moved, and the wagon with them, and where they ventured east into the trees… the trees parted.
They did not walk, as the angry sylvans had. Their roots did not tear from the ground, not did their branches take the form of reaching arms. They hardly seemed to move at all—Briala truly could not tell whether the trees were sliding aside, or the ground itself had swelled beneath them, forming a path between them.
Lanaya took a set on the bench in front of them, though it was clear she was maintaining the spell through concentration, and Briala kept quiet to avoid disturbing her, instead looking in wonder as the trees slipped past on either side. The halla picked up speed, and the aravel glided smoothly through the forest where it parted for them. Its movement was incredibly, impossibly smooth, smoother than a carriage over packed dirt.
She was awestruck. It was the closest thing to her childhood dreams of a magical elven paradise that she had ever experienced in real life. From in front of them came Lanaya's voice, gently amused. "What do you think, my friends?"
"I've never seen anything like this," Briala said, finding her voice. "I've never… in truth I had thought much of the legend of Dalish magic to be just that."

For a character (or multiple) of your choice for the ask game: Canvas, Formal, and Change!
ah thanks so much! this is so fun ✨
canvas: Does your OC have any scars, piercings, tattoos, or other markings? Do they display or cover them up at all?
we’re gonna go with Célia for this one because i answered for Miri already :) yeah, she’s got a lot of scars from her time on the streets of Val Royeaux! she used to do jobs for people in the underworld and that hasn’t always treated her well. she doesn’t flaunt them, and during her time as a bard at court the ones on her face would have been hidden by a mask, but once she joins the inquisition, i doubt she thinks much of it. other than that, she’s got lots of freckles!
formal: What's your OC's formal look? Do they like dressing up? Do they have different looks for different occasions?
we’ll do both here! Miri’s never really had much reason to dress formally before the Inquisition, and she doesn’t see much use for it generally, but Josie and Leliana did talk her into a fancy outfit for the ball in Halamshiral! (bc that formal uniform doesn’t look good on almost anyone, let’s be honest…) it’s an emerald green gown with gold accents, and they put little halla horn ornaments in her hair like Hanal’ghilan 💖
Célia, on the other hand, has worn lots of fancy things in her time. she favors simpler, refined clothing in bright colors (scarlet and indigo are a few of her faves) with plenty of room to move, but she knows how to wear just about anything.
change: Has your OC ever drastically changed their appearance? Significant haircuts, big tattoos, complete wardrobe swap, etc? Why? How do they feel about the change?
Célia again, since we did this one for Miri as well. when she was recruited as a bard by one of the Orlesian nobility, she had to switch her entire wardrobe, certainly, as before that she had nothing remotely suitable for that kind of work. i see her as having kept her hair short up until that point (easier to groom), but she grew it out after that. i don’t see Célia as being over concerned with her appearance for her own sake, only for the sake of being able to do her job, so i don’t think she necessarily feels any particular way about it. she’s very pragmatic, and isn’t very concerned with her own looks.
that said… she loves Rylen’s tattoos… a lot lmao
thanks for the ask!! i love talking about my babies 💖💖

WIP Whenever
tagged by @fadedsweater FOREVER ago but i am just now feeling like i have a grip on this not-so-cute meet cute i have devised for my latest untitled WIP (modern au, parisy val royeaux, magical elements bc i can't restrain myself) that has taken up all my daydreams lately. ANYWAYS tl;dr here is a little peak behind the veil. thank you for tagging me sweater!!! ✨
i'm tagging anyone else who'd like to share something they're working on because i LOVE to see it, and appreciate being tagged but overthink and fret over who else to tag! :')
“You are Dalish,” Solas said, as Ellana stepped into the weak moonlight filtering through the windows, and he made out her vallaslin for the first time. The word, on his sharp and admittedly honeyed tongue, came just shy of an insult. His eyes raked over her face and a look of cool dismissal instantly fell over his own.
“What’s the matter, allergic to halla?” She quipped back, crossing her arms over her chest and quirking her head to the side.
“The Dalish are as children, clinging to false memories of a long-forgotten past,” He snapped immediately, the accusation so practiced it was as if he’d uttered this exact sentence several hundred times before.
Sweet Sylaise—what an insufferable know-it-all, she thought.
“Oh, but you know the truth, right?” Ellana countered—voice acidic, mocking.
The degree of condescension in her voice was a bit shocking, even to her.
(How much and how quickly she had been riled, how easy it had been for him…)
His brow quirked and he smirked at the challenge in her response, apparently amused by her consternation. She fought an epic and nigh impossible battle to keep her frustration from showing on her face.
“I have seen things they—you—have not,” He said simply, with a small shrug.
“Oh, well that clears everything up. Thank you for sharing your infinite wisdom, hahren.”
“Felassan!” Solas snapped, eyes cutting from Ellana to the Slow Arrow. Felassan, having been examining an old satin curtain that framed one of the room’s many windows between his pointer finger and thumb, abruptly dropped it, straightening to his full height.
“Hm?” Came his eventual reply, after he’d cleared his throat. The moonlight filtering through the dusty windowpane glinted starkly against his pale skin and flashed in his violet eyes.
“Are you trying to be funny?” Solas lapsed into elvish (perhaps this was a habit of his, when he was feeling particularly peevish).
“Well, if I am, I’m not trying hard enough, am I?” Felassan shot back with a glare. He stepped closer, motioning to Lavellan as he went. “I bring you our best potential recruit in ages and this is the thanks I get?” He had switched back to Common, though Ellana understood their elvish well enough.
(Yet even while she understood them, there was something distinctly different about the way they spoke it that struck her—the pronunciations and emphases different from any she’d come across, even having met elves from Dalish clans all over Thedas in her twenty-nine years.)
They moved closer and lowered their voices, and spoke so quickly she could no longer make out what they were saying.
Suddenly, Solas stepped away from Felassan and looked at her. His eyes darkened and narrowed, just for the slightest instant, and then he smirked.
“Fine,” He said coolly. “As a first test: you are welcome in our city safehouse.” A pause. A moment’s silence to appreciate that, of course, there would be a catch. “If you can find it.” His smugness indicated that he believed he’d just given Ellana an impossible task.
Felassan gave a loud, indignant huff of breath, and made as if to speak, but Solas pointed an accusatory finger in his direction.
“No help,” Said Solas, interrupting whatever Felassan was going to say.
The Slow Arrow rolled his eyes and waved him off.
Solas looked at Ellana again. “The only hint I’ll allow you is this: numbers here mean nothing, the crowd is lonely.”
He turned from the window and headed towards the door Felassan had pulled her through earlier, the one that led to the back stairwell. Just before he disappeared into the mess of props that obscured the exit from view, Solas half turned, looking back at them over his shoulder.
“It was a pleasure, Ellana.”
The finality in his voice made the statement sound like a less-than-fond farewell. He turned away and continued out of sight. Then, the sound of a door opening and closing echoed sharply through the room.
“Bastard,” Ellana breathed, glaring in the direction Solas had gone. Her eyes cut to Felassan, widening in frustration and disbelief.
“Talks like a villain from a period drama on the OPB and dresses like a disgraced librarian living full-time out of his van with three feral cats! And has the never to treat someone like that? Who the fuck does he think he is?”
Once she began to complain it was difficult to stop.
Felassan shrugged, brows knitting apologetically, as if he had no idea how to answer the question.
“If it makes you feel any better,” He said, after a long, slightly uncomfortable silence, “I actually think that could have gone much worse.”
