Did Lafayette ever see Hamilton again after the war?
Hello Anon,
yes, Hamilton and La Fayette met again after the war – technically even more than once. La Fayette returned to America in 1784, directly after the War in America was concluded. He arrived in New York harbor on August 4, 1784 and stayed in New York until August 8 when he left for Trenton. He was back in New York on September 11 and left New York again for Albany on September 16. He travelled on the Hudson river up to Albany from September 17 to September 23 when he arrived in Albany. He stayed in the city until September 28. On October 6, he was sailing on the Mohawk River down to Albany again where he arrived on October 8 and left on October 10. He continued his travels and was back in New York by December 15. He stayed there until his departure for France on December 21.
La Fayette wrote to Hamilton on October 8, 1784:
Now my dear friend, I am Going to Hartford, Boston, Newport, from thence By Water to Virginia, in order to save time, and about the twentieth of Next Month I Hope to Be Again With You in New york. But Before that time will write You from Newport.
Adieu, My dear Hamilton, Most affectionately I am Yours
“To Alexander Hamilton from Marquis de Lafayette, 8 October 1784,” Founders Online, National Archives, [Original source: The Papers of Alexander Hamilton, vol. 3, 1782–1786, ed. Harold C. Syrett. New York: Columbia University Press, 1962, pp. 580–581.] (01/23/2023)
He wrote again on Hamilton on October 22, 1784:
In less than four weeks time from this day I Hope to Be with Congress, and When my Business there is Concluded, will Come to New york where I Hope we will spend some days together. My stay in Your City Has Been too short—far inadequate to the feelings of my gratitude, and to the Marks of goodness Bestowed upon me. But this time I will Be some days longer with my New york friends.
“To Alexander Hamilton from Marquis de Lafayette, 22 October 1784,” Founders Online, National Archives, [Original source: The Papers of Alexander Hamilton, vol. 3, 1782–1786, ed. Harold C. Syrett. New York: Columbia University Press, 1962, pp. 583–584.] (01/23/2023)
From these letters we can assume that La Fayette met with Hamilton at least during his first or second stay in New York and then also during his last stay in New York right before his departure. La Fayette also send the Hamilton’s a very warm letter congratulating them on the birth of their daughter Angelica and I would not be surprised if the Marquis even met the little Miss during his trip to America.
I hope that helped and I hope you have/had a great day!

in my personal opinion i think saw city is trenton new jersey. or at the very least, saw city is in new jersey. while they do utilize shots of new york city, toronto and i think a few other cities, in part 5 i think they imply that strahm is coming from across the hudson in new york (its been awhile since ive shotgunned the whole movie series i might not have my details perfectly correct) and the license plates in one of the movies is clearly based off the new jersey plate, however it doesnt say the garden state on the plate it says something else (i cant remember right now). i have a personal joke theory that it takes place in a universe where new jersey finally split into south jersey and north jersey, but you could chalk up the different phrase on the plate to a minor universal divergence in their world where new jersey isnt called the garden state. also i think of course it would take place in trenton what other city could breed a man like john kramer if it isnt trenton
holy shit anon i love this. PLEASE honestly it would explain a lot if strahm is from new york and i love your split jersey universe. literally i think itd fit in universe
i think it's a little interesting how like nondescript they try to make the city because the street names are all really generic all the news channel names are like made up and the newspapers as well so this is really cool. i commend u anon o7

La Batalla de Saratoga
Octubre 7, 1777

Red Alert - Chapter Three
Chapter Three: Governors Island
New York City Day One
The Sovetsky Soyuz had settled in two pieces on her side, fire tearing through her superstructure, oil seeping into the Hudson like blood from a gaping wound. There were men in the water, desperately swimming for the shore, but there was no sign of the Captain. He had been an old navy man who had taken pride in the fact that he’d been on the deck of the Aurora during the October Revolution, and he had gone down with his command.
Not that he’d been given much of a choice.
In truth, no matter what the Soviet propaganda would inevitably say, Captain Raskolnikov had died to a hail of bullets, as had most of his officers. Agent Tanya knew this because she’d put them there.
She had just pulled herself out of the Hudson River, at the picnic point at the southwest of Governors Island. The black wetsuit she’d ‘liberated’ from the Navy shimmered in the midmorning sunlight, and she had pulled the hood off to free her brunette hair. She put a hand to her left cheek - when she pulled it away, she saw blood on her index finger. That had been from a Soviet bayonet that had nicked her on the warship, and she supposed that’d be a scar.
Oh well. Scars added character, she supposed.
She was about to stand up when she heard a crackling voice through her earpiece.
“Agent, are you receiving?”
She pressed her fingers to her right ear.
“Tanya reporting.”
“This is Major Hawthorne at Fort Bradley. Where are you?”
“Bottom of Governors Island,” Tanya replied. “Can’t see any Soviet patrols - think I’m good for the moment.”
“Good. I’ve sent a strike force to the Manhattan side of the island - we need to take out anti-air and artillery positions to clear the way for the air force. I need you to support them.”
“No time for a breather, huh?” Tanya said dryly.
“That wasn’t a request, agent. Get on it.”
“Yes ma’am, I’ll get it done.”
Her earpiece went quiet, and she turned towards the northeast. In the near distance, she could see two Soviet soldiers walking down Absecon Road, deep in casual conversation and paying little attention to their surroundings.
She drew her silenced pistols and began to creep over to them.
They would never see her coming.

Griffiss Air Force Base Day One
Lieutenant-General Malcolm Granger paced the command centre at Griffiss Air Force Base in central New York State, occasionally glancing at the electronic map of the northeast United States on the wall. He kept up a stoic front for his command staff, but internally, he felt like he’d aged three years in three hours.
The situation was bad and getting worse. Communications were scrambled, but from what they had managed to gather, Soviet forces were coming ashore at nearly every practicable harbour from Boston to Philadelphia, apparently under the command of General Topolov, a veteran of the last war. Before communications had been lost with Boston, they had reported tanks being landed. Philadelphia and Trenton were under merciless air bombardment, and paratroopers were landing as far inland as Hartford. Meanwhile he couldn’t get in touch with Carville, the Northeastern theatre commander or any of the major forts, being forced to rely on individual USAF officers on the ground or, humiliatingly, the news.
Ideally the news channels would have been taken off air, but Granger supposed that message had gotten lost in the chaos.
“General Granger, sir!”
A captain marched into the room, crisply saluting. Granger returned it.
“Captain.”
“We’ve got news from General Walker’s command post at Fort Dix,” the captain said. “Soviet commandos took it at about 0900. They got Walker alive, but, uh…”
She winced.
“...theatre command effectively doesn’t exist anymore.”
Granger pinched the bridge of his nose.
“Any more good news, Captain?”
“West Point has fallen, although we managed to evacuate about half of the students there,” the captain continued. “But apparently there’s not much going on in Maine. No landings there.”
Granger stared.
“It’s Maine, Captain,” he said.
“...yeah, good point.”
“Sir, we’re getting a transmission!” A technical sergeant, who had been sitting by the radio, raised his voice, and Granger quickly moved over to him.
“What is it, son?” he asked.
“It’s faint, but I think it’s from New York,” replied the sergeant. “Hold on…”
He moved the dial on the radio slightly to the left.
“...anyone receiving? This is Lieutenant Eva Lee at Fort Bradley, we are requesting any available air support…”
“Lieutenant, this is Griffiss Air Force Base, we are receiving you,” the sergeant replied. “Please repeat your request, over.”
“This is Fort Bradley,” Eva repeated. “We are requesting air and ground strike support in and around the mouth of the Hudson - the Soviets have limited anti-air capability, which we’re taking out, over.”
“Lieutenant,” Granger leaned in. “Can you confirm that the air corridor is clear, over?”
“It will be, over.”
“Can you confirm that, Lieutenant Lee, over?”
There was a long silence, and for a moment Granger thought the transmission had been lost again.
“We’re ninety percent sure, over.”
Both the sergeant and the captain shared meaningful looks. Granger mopped his brow; with no theatre command to contradict him, the order to go was entirely his.
“We’ll have fast-movers over you in thirty minutes,” he said. “Hang tight, Fort Bradley, over and out.”
He turned on his heel to face the rest of the command staff.
“I want everything we have in the air ASAP,” he ordered. “Everything we have, fighters and bombers. I want the sky and sea around New York clear by lunch, you understand?”
“But what if the batteries aren’t-” a lieutenant began.
“I said now, lieutenant!” barked Granger. “I’ll be goddamned if the air force is gonna be cowed by a bunch of SAM turrets. Scramble everything! Move, move, move!”
------
New York City Day One
The ‘borrowed’ yacht bumped against Yankee pier, and a pair of GIs immediately jumped out to tie it up. Gunter stepped out behind them, motioning for the others to follow.
He had taken twenty handpicked men from Fort Bradley, all of whom had grabbed all the grenades they could carry. They were a motley bunch - sixteen riflemen, armed with both M16 and M14 rifles, three machine gunners and a single man with a rocket launcher. Most of them were terrified, and looked it - yet this motley little kampfgruppe was going to save New York City. Of that, Gunter was certain.
It didn’t do to be uncertain when one was a commando. There were so many variables and potential setbacks that there really wasn’t any room for worry. The only certainty you could rely on was your own. A commando who wasn’t supremely self-confident had no business being a commando.
The Germans knew this. The British, for the most part, did too. Today, Gunter supposed, he’d find out if the Yankees did.
They moved quickly and as quietly as possible, through the buildings and onto the southern edge of the parade ground, on a little stretch of asphalt called Comfort Road. Here Gunter signalled them to go prone to avoid being seen.
The Soviets had been busy. They’d set up a fort of sandbags, stretching from here to the near-distant fort. On each corner was a machine gun post, but there was a line of trees to Gunter’s left, and he figured that would cover his motley squad as they approached. Beyond the sandbags, he could just about see a pair of rocket launchers - they looked like a mass of tubes tied together and placed incongruously on the back of trucks. Of greater concern were the giant rockets - three of them, pointing up towards the sky, being prepared to fire at god knew what.
But where was the anti-air? Gunter squinted, wishing he had a good pair of binoculars. The old fort looked like one of those 18th century star forts - perhaps the SAMs were positioned on the walls? He could see something around there, but he just couldn’t make it out.
“What is that fort?”
“Fort Jay, sir,” one of his riflemen whispered.
“Danke,” Gunter replied. “We move to the trees. On my signal, Garrett and Wilson will move up and throw grenades at the southern machine gun post - our M60s will cover them. Once we’ve blown the post open, we move in quick and fast towards the fort. Deal with the rocket crews but do not use the grenades until we get to the fort walls. Ser gut?”
There were whispered acknowledgements.
Gunter stood up, gesturing with his hand for the men to follow. They sprinted to the trees - in the distance, beyond the fort, he could see the plumes of smoke from Manhattan. They went to ground again in the grass - Gunter took a deep breath, steeling himself. The machine gun, up close, was bigger than he’d thought. It was one of their ‘Dushka’s’ - the Russian equivalent of the Americans’ M2 Browning. These guns fired big, .50cal bullets that could pound a man to shreds - but they seemed to be on fixed tripods. If they could take this one out, the other three would have trouble focusing their aim on their attackers.
Now or never, he thought.
“Wilson, are you two ready?”
“We’re ready, sir.” Private Wilson held up a grenade to demonstrate.
“What’s the distance, you think?” asked Private Garrett, and Gunter was suddenly struck by how young he looked.
“About twenty odd meters?” Wilson shrugged. “It’s nothin’, kid, we’ll be on ‘em before the Reds know it.”
“Alright, move the machine guns to the left,” hissed Gunter. “We don’t want them getting blocked.”
There was a clanking as the three machine gunners moved, and Gunter winced. He hoped the Soviets didn’t hear that. The gunners didn’t seem to be paying much attention - they were gazing the wrong way, admiring the big rockets - but that would change when they heard the attack.
He looked to his left. Private Ferris, the bald, muscular head of the adhoc machine gun team, grinned and gave him a thumbs up.
“We’re ready, boss.”
Gunter nodded.
“Vorwarts! Schnell, schnell!”
Garrett and Wilson sprang to their feet and started to run. They were only a few steps away from the trees when one of the Soviet machine gunners turned to face them - he let out a cry of alarm.
“Fire!” shouted Gunter.
The machine guns opened up, and the gunner stumbled behind the sandbags. Wilson and Garrett had made ten metres - each pulled the pin on their grenade and prepared to throw. Gunter counted under his breath - one, two, three! - and both hurled their grenades overarm into the machine gun post.
The gunner leaned back in, desperately flailing for his gun. He reached the trigger and fired - thump, thump, thump-
The post disappeared in fire - Gunter could see sandbags and the barrel flying upwards into the sky. He waved his arm, and the rest of the squad sprang up, racing for the gap in the sandbags. Ahead, he could see Garrett charging forward, his M16 ready at the hip. As the smoke cleared, the young private scaled the pile of ruined sandbags, raised his rifle to his shoulder-
Crack!
He tumbled backwards, his helmet flying off as his head shot backwards. The men behind him raced past, leaving him to fall lifelessly into the churned up dirt, as they turned their attentions towards the Soviet garrison.
It was anarchy. The Soviet infantry had been caught completely off guard, to say nothing of the mostly unarmed engineers and artillerymen. The Americans had set to work immediately, and a terrible orchestra of rifle fire filled the air - the singular cracks from the old M14, the burping sound of bursts from the M16, broken occasionally by long ‘ratatatats’ from the machine guns. Private Phillips, the man with the anti-tank rocket, sprinted past Gunter and went down on one knee, aiming his weapon towards the big missiles.
“Phillips! Wait!” exclaimed Gunter.
Phillips didn’t hear him. There was a flash and a cloud of smoke, and the rocket was on its way. For a split second, Gunter saw the rocket making contact with its larger brethren - then everything was fire. The shockwave sent him tumbling backwards, and he could hear nothing but an intense ringing.
He blinked and pushed himself back onto his feet. The rockets were gone - there was a massive crater in the middle of the parade ground. Dazed Soviet soldiers were dropping their rifles and raising their arms. As the ringing slowly ceased, he could hear horrified mumbling - “Kovboi… grebanyye kovboi…”
“What they saying?” Ferris shouted. “They surrendering?”
Gunter smirked.
“Cowboys,” he called back. “They’re calling you cowboys!”
There was nervous laughter from the GIs.
“Come on,” Gunter shouted. “Keep moving, speed is of the essence! Los, los!”
As the squad advanced up the parade ground, Gunter jogged over to Phillips, putting a hand on his shoulder.
“Phillips,” he said. “If anybody from command asks, we meant to do that.”
Phillips nodded sagely.
------
Tanya had noticed the giant explosion to the southeast - everybody had. From her position just west of Fort Jay, she could see an alarmed Soviet officer pointing his men in the direction of the fireball - and away from the SAM sites positions in the trench around the fort. Brilliant - less opposition for her.
She crept forward; there wasn’t much cover, and she relied on the distraction to get close. All eyes focused in the opposite direction, so she reached the trench with little fuss. There was a gun on each corner, save the northern point of the star. She wondered why the Reds had put them in the trenches instead of on the battlements - perhaps it was a way of covering them from air recon or attack.
She crept to the northwest corner, quietly preparing a C4 charge. She had it all planned out in her head - but plans never survived contact with the enemy.
The SAM operators were nervous, their eyes trained to the east and to the south - anywhere but where Tanya was crawling. She reached over the side of the trench and dropped the charge - it landed with a dull thunk.
“Hmm?” one of the Russians turned. His eyes locked with Tanya’s.
“Aw, shit.”
“Narushitelʹ! Narushitelʹ!”
Tanya sprang to her feet and sprinted east, bullets whizzing past her. She quickly grabbed into one of her ammo pouches and produced a detonator, pressing down on it. There was an ear-piercing bang, and the shockwave sent her stumbling forward, but she had no time to stop. She rounded the tip of the star and approached the eastern point.
The four crewmen at the second SAM were already at the ready, raising their rifles. Tanya drew her two pistols, raising them and aiming - it was time to put her training to good use.
Phut! Phut! She fired twice, each bullet finding a target. Two men stumbled back, slumping against the SAM turret - their comrades let out startled cries at how quickly they had been downed. Tanya used their momentary distraction - a half-second at most - to line up two more shots.
Phut! Phut! She reached the second SAM almost before the bodies of the last two crewmen had hit the floor.
She reached into her pouch, grabbing her second C4 charge. She tucked it under the rocket tubes and scurried off towards the south. She could hear gunfire - the strike force Hawthorne had sent had reached the fort. Time to link up.
She was just passing the eastern gate when a large Russian soldier burst out, grabbing her by the neck. He tugged her back, and she could smell his breath. He was swearing at her in Russian - she made out the word tovarish. Must be a friend of one of those SAM gunners, she thought, or maybe he was just pissed off in general.
Oh well, more fool him.
She rotated swiftly and swung her leg back, behind the soldier’s feet. Before he could react, she had pushed herself backwards, deliberately letting herself fall and tripping him down in the process. As the Russian soldier hit the ground, she kept moving into a somersault; she was back on her feet almost instantly, her pistols ready once again. She pointed them at the soldier’s chest and fired - Phut! Phut! Phut! Phut!
As the soldier gurgled his final death throes, Tanya noticed another soldier approaching - this one she recognised.
“Gunter.”
“Fraulein,” Gunter grinned, looking down at the dead soldier. “I don’t think you needed to kill him quite that hard.”
“I don’t think you needed to blow up their compound that hard either,” said Tanya.
Gunter chuckled and shrugged.
“Fair’s fair,” he said. “The northern batteries?”
“Blew ‘em both back to Russia,” replied Tanya.
“Good, good.”
Gunter raised his fingers to his earpiece.
“This is von Esling,” he said. “Batteries are down, sky is clear.”
------
They came suddenly and without warning.
More than three dozen dart-nosed, swept-wing, silver-plated planes roared over the Manhattan skyline - these were the Thunderchiefs, capable of dropping more firepower than some heavy bombers of the last war. Escorting them were dozens of sleek, delta-winged ‘Delta Dart’ interceptors, which now broke off towards the distant airships over Staten Island.
There was no time to react aboard the Soviet warships, which now found themselves devoid of anti-aircraft support. A few destroyers opened fire with deck-mounted machine guns, but the Thunderchiefs were both too fast and too far away for them to have any effect. They soared over the Hudson, and one by one, each launched a deadly cluster of air-to-sea missiles in the direction of the Soviet fleet.
The result was a massacre. Destroyers were blown out of the water with single hits by the advanced missiles. Cruisers rolled on their sides in balls of flame. The Soviets’ two remaining battleships, the Sovetskaya Ukraina and the Sovetskaya Gruziya, lumbered to starboard in an attempt to evade - they were like tortoises running from a leopard. Rockets pummelled them - the Ukraina burst as the magazine detonated, sending shards of scrap metal into the sky.
The airships had no more luck. Soviet fighter cover was nearly nonexistent, leaving the large, slow behemoths easy target for the Delta Darts. One by one, they burst into flames, tumbling down onto Staten Island. Of about twenty six airships deployed over New York, not a single one escaped.
When the smoke cleared, the Soviet fleet had been decimated. The Gruziya limped back to sea with its few surviving escorts, leaving behind a trail of wrecked shipping. Transports lay in ruin alongside the docks at Red Hook, along with any hope of resupply for the Soviet ground forces.
Satisfied at a job well done, the aircraft turned and headed back to Griffiss Air Force Base. They had suffered no losses.
------
“Hell of a fireworks display, huh?”
Hawthorne glanced at Major Biggs, who was staring out at the wreckage in the sea. Everywhere she looked, there was smoke - Governors Island, Liberty Island, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Staten Island - everywhere looked like it had been pounded.
“If the old Mustang was the Cadallic of the skies, what do you call a Thunderchief?” asked Eva.
Biggs pondered.
“Probably a Buick,” he said.
“They gave us this win,” said Hawthorne.
“Ma’am?” Eva tilted her head.
“They attacked without significant air cover, relying nearly entirely on their navy and what ground forces they could land,” explained Hawthorne. “They made no effort to knock out Griffiss before landing, which they could have done with submarine launched rockets. If we’d been facing a halfway capable opponent, we’d never have held.”
She shook her head.
“We were saved by incompetence,” she grunted.
“Hey, you’ve gotta give our boys credit, we still held,” said Biggs.
“This is a big propaganda win, ma’am,” added Eva. “We’ve proven they can’t just walk into our country, and…”
“‘Propaganda wins’ don't win wars, Lieutenant,” said Hawthorne. “We’ve a long way to go before that happens.”
She turned and walked off the ramparts.
“Geez, tough crowd,” grunted Biggs, rubbing the back of her head.
Eva turned towards the Manhattan skyline. Buildings were burning in the distance - most of Battery Park was aflame, and the distant sound of sirens gave the whole scene a sinister ambience.
“She’s not wrong,” she admitted. “This war’s only just begun.”
