Kaka & Kiki are kinda like Laios & Falin… Kaka being stoic and giving repressed energy like early Laios, Kiki being cryptic and always smiling and kinda soft-looking. Autism siblings 2, ostracized and othered as kids and have a deep bond due to sticking together through it all, though unlike with Laios their parents are very loving so Kaka developed family as a big value more than Laios (bc asides for Falin Laios doesn’t care much about it).

In the gnome festival comic you can see Kaka is more emotive than he seems! Full with a :3 face, and he’s the one crying at the end. He’s insecure about his legs and being tall… It really got to him. Conceal don’t feel. In the gnome festival comic you also see him sensing others’ gaze on him and that something is off unlike Kiki, again Laios-like in the way that judgement from others gets to him more than her.

Autistic Anime Boys Tournament Bracket

Heeey guys! It’s finally time for our next tournament! Get ready to pit all your favorite autistic anime* boys against one another~ 😈😈😈 The same rules as the autistic anime girls poll apply here, but I will reiterate them below.

*Note: I understand that the term ‘anime’ does not, semantically, apply to every character that I will allow into the poll—I am simply using the term in a general manner, because it is quick to say and widely recognized. Characters from print media (i.e. manga, manhwa, manhua), ‘anime-style’ webcomics and games/visual novels, and from non-Japanese East Asian animation like donghua and hanguk aeni are welcome as well.

No western media, unless the characters are deliberately designed in an 'anime-style’ (ex: in the past, I have allowed characters from things like DDLC). It can't be a temporary or one-off gag style-change either. It must be the series' regular artstyle. Judging this will be my subjective opinion, but I am going to be excluding animation that stylistically toes the line (sorry AtLA and VLD fans).

Don't submit Shigeo Kageyama from Mob Psycho 100. His autism swag is too powerful and iconic, so I've decided he will be the mascot of this tourney. The winner of the poll will be rewarded with a special exhibition match against Mob. 👍👍

The characters do not need to be canonically autistic. Headcanons are perfectly fine.

You can submit as many characters as you like, but do not submit the same character multiple times.

oh, it's also finally time for the official ds9 character ranking as of the end of s1. i'm not doing minor characters yet (jake, nog, garak, keiko) since they haven't had any major stuff going on and idk if they ever will. rankings in the future may be different.

odo - whatever autistic swag he has going on has charmed and bewitched me. i'm so easy i love little guys that don't get humanity. he seems like the natural choice after spock and data i should have known this would happen. every single thing i learn about him makes me more insane. also, he's so dour and gruff that he is just BEGGING to be given an arc where he gets a child or a love interest or whoever who gets to be the only one able to lighten him up at all. and i know about him getting with kira so i am just sitting here like. PLEASE let that be good. please.

kira - ALL OF HER SCENES ARE SO GOOD. i liked her from the beginning but they have done NOTHING but feed me ever since the pilot. her conflict, or rather, lack of conflict, now that the war is over, is so fucking good. who even is she now that she's not the underdog? how do you just move on once the war is over? she's such a good actress too, she smiles when she's angry and she can cry on cue. you can feel the weight of her history every single time she's on screen, she's fantastic

sisko - the only reason he didn't tie with kira is because we haven't seen as much sisko-centric stuff yet. i thought his intro in the pilot was INSANELY good, it blew my mind, and i couldn't wait to see where he went from there...but then he didn't go anywhere else. that said, i do love that he always backs up his people, especially kira and odo since they're not federation. also i LOVE what a good dad he is and his extremely wholesome jokes about that time he and dax fucked twins or whatever.

bashir - i love to laugh at this guy. he is SO good comedically and i don't know why i didn't expect him to be the comedy character but he is. i know he has some deeper stuff later and i CANNOT WAAAAIT to see what else he is gonna have going on with garak, i'm very excited for his future. i feel like once bashir finally gets a serious storyline it's gonna hit me like a fucking truck because of how silly he is the rest of the time...my favorite cringefail loser <3

o'brien - he would have tied with bashir except again he had less stuff to do. i like him so much better in ds9 than tng and he is SOOO longsuffering but i'm still waiting to see why everyone says he suffers more than jesus on the cross. also, i fucking love his little girl. she's so cute i die. i'm never sorry to see this guy on my screen.

dax - love and light to women and people who are only currently women and genderfluid worms everywhere, so far i feel pretty uncompelled by the dax stuff. i mean, i don't dislike her or anything, but she can't hold a candle to some of the characters higher on this list. her hair is So Big that it's weird to look at but i could forgive this if she was less...buttoned up? she's always very :X except when she talks about how cool it is to be a hot woman everyone likes flirting with, which, like, GOOD for her, but i'd like to know who she is beyond that. her personality seems so fluid she doesn't have one - even sisko paints a more vivid picture of curzon dax than we get of jadzia, which is mostly a lot of blah. i absolutely believe they'll make her more interesting later they just haven't caught me yet

quark - i mean. this was inevitable. i DO like him better than i thought i would and whatever he has going on with odo is extremely fucking funny, but on his own he's not as funny as bashir and he's not got as much depth as the rest of the cast, plus there's the whole ferengi issue of them not being written well in general. he's actually such a huge improvement on all other ferengi ever though that i deeply considered giving him the #6 spot, but dax, while uncompelling, DID at least get a backstory episode that was good instead of that episode quark got that made him hold the idiot ball. so.

i love matthew! admittedly, i do not have as many strong opinions about him as some characters that i have more experience writing. i generally agree with the canon/fanon representation of him i think? mostly? as everything, this varies depending on the AU but i will list some general HCs about how i usually see him in humanverse.

i give matthew autistic boy swag, sorry not sorry he is definitely autistic. he's extremely socially anxious especially in big cities. often worries about not understanding when people are joking or not, especially as a kid. (i'm not autistic personally but i'm very ND + have many family members who are on the spectrum)

booksmart, nerdy, wise beyond his ears, but socially naïve to the point where he gets himself in tricky situations bc he's so agreeable. friendly, but can be standoffish if you rub him the wrong way, especially on a failed first impression. it's ironic bc he will go along with someone who wants to hurt him but can be unintentionally rude of someone who has the best intentions!!

Vergil’s Autistic Swag

alternate title: NeurodiVergil. originally typed down on 31 Mar 2022

I once did a sort of infodump on the understanding I processed of Transformers: Prime Soundwave, how he might‘ve been autistic-coded, and why I identified so hard with him.

But before Soundwave, there was another blorbo I vibed with, and that was Vergil whom I encountered and got attached to when playing Devil May Cry 3: Dante’s Awakening. I had a PS2 back then. I miss it so much.

DISCLAIMER: Similarly to the TF:P Soundwave autistic coding post, these following things I paid attention to are purely headcanons. They built into my way of making sense of Vergil’s characterization and why I related so strongly to him when I was a teen.

If you agree with these headcanons, then hello new friend. If you don’t agree, that’s fine - but please be courteous about it. Real-life autistic people (like myself) already have a lot of neurotypical crap to put up with. I write stuff for fun and as an outlet, and often enough, there are strangers on the Internet who want me to shut up when talking about this interest which does not involve them.

Rant aside - here we go. Birdbrain might chime in under quotes. (This post focuses on Vergil as read by Nad in DMC3.)

He prefers solitude and surrounds himself with books.

He does not like people even approaching his personal space. (Go away, Arkham.)

Discipline, diligence with which he practices Iaido. A martial art of awareness, of smooth, controlled movements. It matches his outwardly-calm temperament.

Heightened senses, able to feel enemies coming - and dodge them accordingly. (Pretty sure he had lots of practice with this, plus he has demon blood, but still.) .

Sometimes talking while he’s alone? Could be a twin thing (laying claim on a voice that is his own, affirming himself as separate from Dante). But it could also be externalizing words to make his thoughts/feelings clear.

“Why doesn’t he talk like a normal guy?” Very particular, different-from-most-people patterns of speech (writer-Nad had this in secondary school and was often bullied for it). He’s a lot more eloquent than Dante, who is still wittier than most demons. “Pretty sure most of the sentient, talking demons in the series are neurotypical.”

Using Summoned Swords because guns are distasteful to him. Has a code of honor that he upholds.

“Why does he dress like that? It’s not ordinary.” Is his outfit more comfortable to him??? Well, sensory comforts aside, it’s likely an issue of identity. He’s embracing his legacy - perhaps it’s how people expects Sparda to dress, but he’s maintaining his individuality, his power. He has zero use for people who think he looks weird. .

Focused on practical facts and achieving goal/task. Firm understanding of the importance of power.

Vergil fighting Dante - a familiar pattern of conflict. Sweep aside sentiment, focus on ambition. And being ready to stab Dante with Rebellion? Again, POV of a half-demon who's been living under a certain reality for too long. Power, and depending solely on own strength.

Having what he requires (the two amulets and blood of Sparda), he then has no need of Arkham. Thinking Arkham refrained from killing Lady out of sentimental hesitation, Vergil discards what he considers as weak.

At the site of the seal, again voicing his thoughts aloud. Goes “actually” at Dante with a correction, not that Dante cares. .

He fights Dante as he has for years. Lady’s interruption is not significant to him. To them.

Arkham/Jester’s reveal? Mostly quiet because he’s wounded, but there’s much information to take in.

Vergil walks pretty quietly. I mean, well, Lady was exhausted after fighting Dante. But stealthy movement is common autistic swag. ‘sup Arkham

Vergil’s negotiation with Dante is not at all emotional; just logical, practical. That’s just how he is. .

Heightened-senses, objective-focused Vergil is the first to notice the amulets and Force Edge free-falling.

It's hard to go through them all, but I'll try my best to put together a horrifically comprehensive list. This will include their fankids as well, to save us all some time. TL;DR, yes they straightwashed aoi, taka gets no relationship at all, and there are some reaches made for ships. If you're interested in all the weird pairings though, here's a list + some info on each.

There is, obviously, Kirigiri Kyoko/Naegi Makoto.

Their kids include, in what I believe is eldest to youngest: Kiki Naegi, Mokubo Naegi, Koto Naegi, and Kiri Naegi. Kiki is given the most prominent role in the whole series, and has been the protagonist for definitely over 100+ stories, though I don't know the exact time she became the focus nor the exact number of stories she's been the focus of, because I care about my mental health. Mokubo is the second eldest, and is autistic. I mistook him for being the youngest out of the four at one point, so I think that is all I need to say about how his autism is handled. Koto and Kiri are twins, a boy and girl respectively, and both are named after nicknames that were often used for Makoto and Kyoko earlier in the series. Not much to say, the younger siblings don't appear often enough to have anything of note happen to them. Kiki, despite having a prominent role, is also completely uninteresting. You'd think with how much shit she gets into, wanting to follow in her mother's footsteps as a detective, getting to go to HPA just because she's the daughter of the headmaster and vice-headmistress, getting kidnapped at one point, and even going back in time, that she'd be more interesting. But no.

Hey, you thought Byakuya would be paired off with Toko, right? You thought this, yes? Assumed? Fuck you. Asahina Aoi/Togami Byakuya. I thought she was paired off with Hagakure tbh, that's the usual cop-out you'd expect of these sorts of things. But I misremembered I suppose, because imagine my fucking horror when I went to search for them just now and it turns out that it ain't Togafuka that ends up happening here. I'm hard pressed to say if this is better or worse than the alternative. Their children are Yuta Togami and Shinobu Togami, named after their dead brother and sister respectively. No one gives a shit about them. Expect me not to elaborate much on the kids from now on, because who give a shit. Just remember they're here, being the little cardboard cutouts they are.

And what worse to do in this scenario than to do Fukawa Toko/Hagakure Yasuhiro? They pop up about as frequently as Byakuya and Aoi, with chunks of screentime interspersed throughout the series that wanes as Kiki's status as the protagonist settles, and the author doesn't really know what to do with them other than have them be set dressing once a blue moon. Their child is Hagakure Kawako.

Coming back around to the Naegis, without Toko to claim Komaru as her swag wife, we get. Hinata Hajime/Naegi Komaru. Don't have much to say about this one, they just really don't have any chemistry. The author does have the gall to tag some of the works featuring them as Hinaegi though. They lack any children that I can see. Yet.

Leading into the SDR2 survivors, we have Komaeda Nagito/Tsumiki Mikan. I believe at one point it was stated that they were having a child, but I honestly don't know if that child ever appears. They have a total of like, four appearances in the series as a pairing. They don't matter.

We don't have anything of particular note other than them out of the rest of the SDR2 cast, so we move on to V3 characters, which are handled interestingly. See, it appears the author decided to split them up, so some of them are aged up to adults working at HPA or elsewhere, while others are still students, and yet more are initially introduced as students before graduating from the school early on. I'll clarify which is which as I list these next few.

First, Saihara Shuichi/Kiki Naegi. Shuichi and Kaede actually did date previously, but Kaede was like. Idk, dissatisfied with how subservient Shuichi was so they're exes. Shuichi is fucking insane for Kiki though, so much so that the author like. Did a fake Saimatsu week where actually they were exes the entire time, and Shuichi still dated Kiki. While advertising the fic as Saimatsu. People pointed this out, they glossed over these complaints in responses. They're both in university in the current state of canon, so no kids or anything. Yet.

Next, Gokuhara Gonta/Tojo Kirumi. Nothing of note, don't wanna read the fics they're in. They're probably graduated from HPA at this point.

Oma Kokichi/Yumeno Himiko, and interestingly enough, they have an open, outright stated polygamous relationship that also consists of Chabashira Tenko/Yumeno Himiko. It's honestly very interesting for this to come up in an endless field of cishet, nuclear family pairings, but it feels pretty forced. Right from the get-go of it being introduced, in fact. It's dropped on us in a fic where Korekiyo trying to murder Kiki is the spotlight, and is glossed over afterward until a reunion fic where they have dinner with the Naegi family, where it's revealed that Kokichi is a cop. Of all the bitches, it's Kokichi that becomes a narc, for no reason shown other than it just being how things went after he graduated, I guess. But yeah they don't matter either.

There's also Iruma Miu/Kazuichi Soda, which is like. Just kinda lame, tbh. Miu works at HPA I think. K1-B0 is their son that Miu made, and then they had a flesh and blood daughter, Biusagi Iruma, at some point offscreen. It's just a kinda weird pairing, they don't do much except launch the weird time travel fic.

Then. Oh Boy. Harukawa Maki/Momota Kaito. Unsurprising, BUT they get this whole arc about Kaito dying and Maki being super upset about that. It's not very normal tbh, Kaito wants to go to space before he dies so Sonia and Gundham, using presumably the funds that should be used for their country that they are the rulers of, make a rocket and send him to space. He dies in space. Everyone is sad, and then Maki finds out like right before the funeral that she's apparently carrying his kid. She names the kid Haruki. Trust me, it's really Sad.

And that's basically it for notable stuff, I think. Gonna quickly mention the other ships in the series, ones that aren't really one-offs but don't have anything special going for them; Kuwata Leon/Maizono Sayaka, Sonia Nevermind/Tanaka Gundham, Amami Rantaro/Shirogane Tsumugi, Ultimate Imposter/Mioda Ibuki, and Saionji Hiyoko/Koizumi Mahiru.

A note on that last one; even if I somehow did like that ship (I don't, I'm a particular fan of the theory that hiyoko is literally just some kid that has so so so many problems going on), you'd be hard pressed to find any fics in the series that involve them to a prevalent degree. From what I can tell, they each individually get one or two lines, and none in reference to any actual relationship between them that could be romantic to any degree. It's straight up lying, again.

That's everything I want to talk about though. Assume that anyone I did not mention here simply aren't paired off with anyone, or appeared like one time and then never again so I didn't find them.

ok. rigoletto headcanons. here we go

i love rigoletto. both the opera and the character. here are some headcanons about both. source: i know everything

first off. i think rigoletto, gilda, and sparafucile are all autistic but in different directions

rigoletto and gilda are both very outwardly expressive autistics, both verbally and visibly. sparafucile meanwhile is not very expressive at all and is generally very quiet, and has maybe 4 facial expressions at most. (usually he looks... very focused but also vaguely confused.)

science is unsure if rigoletto and gilda are expressive bc of the autism or because they are italian. (sparafucile and maddalena meanwhile are french but we will get to them eventually.)

also i think rigoletto is trans. world's first jester with transmasc swag. transjester, if u will. 'why' again i just know everything

also i think rigoletto is 40, gilda is 15, and sparafucile and maddalena are both 38 (but distinctly have the energy of like.... ageless cartoon characters). i will mostly be writing these about those 4 because while i am aware i COULD make headcanons abt like. monterone or giovanna or whoever. i don't have the Autism focused on them atm. maybe later

in my mind, rigoletto was abandoned at an orphanage when he was a baby. nobody knew what his parents were like, or why they abandoned him

rigoletto himself has always suspected it was because of his kyphosis, but a very small part of him wonders if they did want him and just couldn't provide for a baby. (he isn't sure if this would be better or worse)

he grew up in an orphanage but was never adopted or even really taken into consideration to be adopted, mainly because- besides his disability- he always Did have a bit of anger about him and wasn't the easiest kid to get along with. eventually he aged out of the orphanage and ran off to start his own life; i imagine he did have a bit of a creative streak to him but he realized his options were limited as a disabled person back in Ye Olde Times, and that led him to be a jester

(in a modern au where things aren't As depressing (and, later on, gilda does not die because while i realize the story hinges on that its MY emotional support modern au and I get to choose how actually narratively sensical it is): rigoletto was also born and given up pretty early on, but instead he floundered in the foster system, handed over between households but never actually adopted. he aged out of the system, took a couple of gap years, and then went off to study politics- only to realize in the last year of his program that he Fucking Hated politics and would rather write comedy.)

i can't imagine him ever having had a wife, tbh. (i know it says that in the libretto but i know everything.) i imagine gilda was an accident baby created out of wedlock, and that rigoletto Had considered giving her up for adoption, but then realized like... he couldn't stand the idea of her going through the exact same cycle he did, and never being adopted, and becoming cynical and bitter like him. from the very start rigoletto's fear has been the idea of his daughter turning out just like him. and so he decided to raise her instead

(not helping the above is that i imagine gilda to be physically disabled as well- i draw her as having a missing arm since birth- so there's an additional 'fuck fuck fuck she can't turn out like me' there. anyway this makes the tragedy of the opera worse in some ways i think. :) )

i'm biased bc i am, obviously, a warrior cats kid but in a modern au (or. an au where warrior cats is somehow existent in the 16th century.) gilda 100% had an insane warrior cats phase also.

in general i think gilda should be a little insane in the like. 'tells you gruesome facts out of nowhere just to make things interesting' way. like i'm sorry look at her dad she has Strange genes. also she deserves a personality

sparafucile and maddalena, meanwhile, are french (they're foreigners from burgundy, remember). they are twins- maddalena was born at around 11:40 on september 30, and sparafucile was born just after midnight on october 1. both siblings have been using this factoid to annoy each other as long as they've been aware of it.

they were born into poverty, with parents that were too occupied with other things at best and outright negligent at worst, and were often forced to fend for themselves.

sparafucile was born missing a leg, and was just... naturally very weak and sickly (ironically up until he was about twelve he was much shorter than maddalena even though as an adult he's taller than her). maddalena was always very protective of him when they were kids, and sparafucile never forgot that- which is much of why he's so protective of her in turn when they're adults.

neither really had the financial opportunity to make their situation much better- and when they did try they often ended up abused

sparafucile killed the first guy on accident. i don't know the specifics of it but it was definitely on accident. he realized that there was no way he was getting out of that scot-free bc. well. he is poor and nobody but his sister knows him. so he just sorta... stuck with it

also his special interest is knives so. not all bad? i guess? ?????

(if you were wondering: i think gilda's special interest is just... weird animal facts and rigoletto's is. actually i don't know what rigoletto's is. finding new ways to be rude to people, i guess.)

(he feels very bad that maddalena got involved with the whole thing. maddalena however... seems to enjoy it, somehow.)

in a modern au i think sparafucile would be a lawyer. idk he's got that sort of energy. maddalena... i could see her being a bartender or something. she would just love to have a job where she can talk people's ears off.

also i will say it. whatever was going on in that duet between rigoletto and sparafucile in act 1. it certainly was not entirely heterosexual.

anyway there are definitely things i am forgetting that i'll shoot myself in the foot for not including later but i'll add those. at some point. eventually

Autistic Anime Girls Tournament Bracket

Hi there! Self-explanatory title, but this is an Autistic Anime Girls Competition! Here we strive to determine: Who is tumblr's top anime girlie on the spectrum? Though I'm using 'anime' as a general term, characters from print media (i.e. manga, manhwa, manhua), ‘anime-style’ webcomics and games, and from non-Japanese East Asian animation like donghua and hanguk aeni are welcome as well.

Some stuff to know:

The character does not have to be canonically autistic (though canon autistic rep is very much appreciated). Headcanons are allowed and expected.

You can submit as many characters as you like, but do not submit the same character multiple times.

Though I love them, autistic girls from western animation are not allowed in this particular competition.

This competition will be a more relaxed schedule than my last tumblr poll, so that I don't stress and overstretch myself, haha. I may take a few days' break between rounds instead of instantly releasing the next batch of polls right away. This should also help keep the blog from getting shadow-banned.

Submit characters through the designated Google form. Any sent through asks/messages/any other means will be ignored and you’ll be kindly redirected to the form. Just keeps things more organized this way.

heyo it's the autism swag onceler anon, i wanna elaborate my headcanon. his speech pattern is unusual, it's very overexaggerated, and he uses big words and phrases, such as gratifying (yeah ik it can be explained by the fact that he's a movie character, but none of the other characters speak like that) and unlike his family, he doesn't have a thick accent. he has an unusual gait and posture (although this too can be explained by him being a cartoon, again, no one else in the movie walks like that). he's socially awkward and he's better at making "friends" with the lorax, who is also eccentric and weird as hell and not human people. not to mention that his family's behavior can be explained by them being ableist, (ableism tw) them telling him he won't be able to amount to anything and be a failure was a pretty common mindset about autistic people amongst autism m*mmies between the late 90s and early 2010s whether they wanted to admit it or not. it's safe to assume that the family was poor, and accommodations, special education programs in school and such, are expensive and they were not happy about the fact that they had to spend money they didn't have on some child.

this was very long (i didn't mean to write a whole book in here sorry lol)

these are good points. i think it’s totally cash money if people headcanon him as autistic and i can definitely see why. i noticed especially in his tendency to get his mind fixed on something until he sees it through is a trait i see in lots of autistic people, my twin brother and myself included.

i do agree with you in that he’s definitely the bounciest/most interestingly animated character in the movie. everything about his acting is goofy and exaggerated but also feels very purposeful. it’s one of my favorite things about the movie and one of the main reasons i love his character so much. i feel like in that sense, among many others, the directors/animators did a spectacular job of setting him far apart from his family visually and personality-wise. i can think of several scenes off the top of my head that illustrate the stark difference in him and his kin that make me feel inclined to agree with you.

i don’t know if i headcanon him as autistic myself, but it’s definitely a valid interpretation and i find it very interesting. i also just love any autistic character that is portrayed as bouncy and loud/outgoing in personality because i am like that and i have a harder time identifying with the more quiet, monotone autistic characters in media (although they are just as wonderful!)
