You ever have your narrative haunted by a character who isn’t even yours
#I’ve been thinking about lien-hua non-stop for the past two days send help#like… it’s true. she does haunt the sotrl and everything sotrl-adjacent narratives#the pair of tragic sisters. the grief. her death is both the catalyst and the butterfly effect for all following events#P’Li would be a different person. Suiren and Midori wouldn’t be left with Haya. the RL might not have even gone after Korra#because Lien-Hua went through the same thing as P’Li and the two of them would rationalise better together#I don’t think Lien would trust Unalaq at all. and her distrust is different from. for example. Ming-Hua’s natural snark#they might’ve payed more attention#and even if they didn’t and still left. again sotrl wouldn’t happen#Lien would be left with the girls and she’d seek out Zhi for help so it’d be closer to UtOS#and Midori would be a slightly different person too for a… different reason#I love Lien. she’s my beloved child but that’s why this story is a tragedy. she has to die. nothing would happen as it did if she hadn’t#she died and now she haunts the narrative#and it’s not even intentional bc when I came up with Suiren and Midori’s characters or sotrl’s storyline I hadn’t read LaF yet#well. I had. I read what was there before Kat continued it#but I didn’t really pay attention to Lien-Hua’s existence. like yeah. she was there and then she died and now P’Li’s the way she is#back then she didn’t influence the way I thought about my girls in any way#compared to now#now the way P’Li sees her nieces is forever shadowed by the loss of her sister#both as kids and adults. whether they’re happy or fighting#the first makes her remember her childhood before it was so abruptly ended#the latter makes her wonder if she and Lien-Hua would’ve ended up the same way#there is a tinge of resentment there. she wants to see her nieces as they are. not as what they parallel#she knows her sister is long gone. she’ll never see her again unless she wants to go into the fog of lost souls again#but the spirits can be as merciful as they are cruel#once. a girl was powerless to stop her sister’s death. 11 years later. the girl grew up and holds her newborn niece. filled with deja vu#because yes. Midori is Lien-Hua’s reincarnation#she was always so unexplainably drawn to her auntie. much more than Suiren was#so fond of the sun on her skin and spices in her food and the glow of a fire that it’s hard to believe she has no FN blood in her#she gets strange dreams of people she can’t know but feels like she does. of an oddly familiar red eyed girl. of a long time in a dark cell#losing her parents. Haya’s cruelty. her sister’s protection fill her with dread she swears she felt before. Why did it all happen again???

Sorry to bother you, is My journey worth watching?
what: period cdrama // completed // 24 eps, roughly 50 mins each where: iqiyi (i think most eps are still vip-locked) (standard disclaimer that i don't use eng subs so i don't speak to the quality of the subs) why: ngl, i was in it purely for zhang linghe to start, but then got !!! over cheng lei and lu yuxiao, and was too invested to quit even when the plot got sloppy. extremely gorgeous cast, extremely gorgeous set. the cinematography?? chef's kiss. you can see the budget for this show was good. the relationship between the characters? v interesting.
story revolves around the Gong family who is v prominent in jianghu even though they live up in the mountains and keep themselves sequestered away from the rest of jianghu. the Gong family itself is split into 4 different factions: Shang, Jue, Zhi, Yu.
Yu 羽 - the Yu household deals with internal affairs. the head of the Yu household is the head of the Gong family (the title is Sword Wielder or zhiren)
Tumblr media
this is our male lead, gong ziyu (a baby). second son of the Yu household. his dad is the zhiren and his big bro (gong huanyu) is the named heir who will inherit the zhiren position. has a v lukewarm relationship with his dad. introduced as being quite useless. his martial arts is :/ and he sees no need to improve his skills etc because his brother will be there to protect him.
is quite suddenly thrust into the position of zhiren when his dad and his brother die under ~mysterious circumstances :(
Jue 角 - the Jue household deals with...external affairs, they are the ones who leave the mountain to Get Things Done outside and manage all relationships/partnerships outside
Tumblr media
gege step on me this boy is gong shangjue, head of the jue household. he is The Man. the pride and joy of the gong family. everyone (*cough*i say everyone but really yuanzhi-didi does it enough that he counts for everyone*cough*) worships him. martial arts skills?? loyalty to the gong family?? incredibly attractive resting bitch face??? he is a 10 no matter how you assess him.
missed out on being the zhiren by virtue of him not being home when tragedy struck the old zhiren and gong ziyu's brother. doesn't think gong ziyu has what it takes to be zhiren and take care of the Gong family. my boy gong shangjue would make an Excellent zhiren tbh
do i have to seduce y'all into watching this i think i have to:
Tumblr media
Shang 商 - the Shang household develops/produces weaponry
Tumblr media
for most of it, the show has a p dark vibe, BUT whenever gong zishang shows up, we know we're in for some laughs. this zishang-jiejie is the eldest daughter of the head of the Shang household.
her father doesn't take her v seriously because she's a girl (also because she's always following behind gong ziyu's personal bodyguard jin fan like this: 😍💖🤞🏼; valid life choices tbh because same) but she does take her craft v seriously! ride or die for gong ziyu.
Tumblr media
Zhi 徵 - the Zhi household develops poisons
Tumblr media
YUANZHI-DIDI!! this boy loves two things: poisons and gege. #1 gong shangjue fanboy at least 10 years in a row. parents died when he was p young, and gong shangjue took him under his wing. whiz at poisons and v fight fight fight (ง •̀_•́)ง. is suspicious about everything and VERY protective of his gege.
Tumblr media
alright that's the main Gong sibs all sorted. there's also an assortment of Inner Mountain (houshan) characters that are v interesting but i won't get into because 1) spoilers, 2) this post will get too long if i get to talk about hua-gongzi and xue-gongzi/xue-tongzi.
okay so the Gong family live in p much a fortress up in the mountains. no outsiders are allowed in, and only a select few are allowed out of the Gong family territory at all. we learn that this is to protect the Gong family from Wu Feng, a spy organisation which has p much taken over jianghu. Wu Feng learns that the Gong family will be holding a bride selection contest thingy for gong huanyu, and sends:
yun weishan, a low-ranking assassin in Wu Feng (Chi, the lowest out of 4 ranks chi, mei, wang, liang), disguised as a bride.
Tumblr media
her mission is to be picked by gong huanyu as his bride, and become the next zhiren-furen so she can p much feed intel to Wu Feng. when gong huanyu and the old zhiren both croak, her attentions turn to gong ziyu who is by that point already 😍🥰😘 over her anyway NO SURPRISES. the 恋爱脑 on that boy istg, absolutely head no thoughts only yun weishan at least 20 hours in a day.
Tumblr media
shangguan qian, a higher-ranking assassin (Mei, one rank above yws) in Wu Feng
Tumblr media
my love my wife her mission is a little different from yws. her target isn't anyone from the Yu household but gong shangjue instead. the goal is to get her hands on this secret weapon (this is also a v HMMM part of the plot but no matter we endure what we have to) that the Gong family is safeguarding.
the relationship between these two wu feng spies is so interesting too!! they're not friends, not exactly allies, but also not quite enemies. they will help each other out if they really have to (and only if it doesn't jeopardise their own positions and there is adequate compensation), but will also not hesitate to stab each other in the backs if it serves their respective missions.
Tumblr media
i needed like 100000 more scenes of them together ngl
ANYWAY the plot revolves around the Gong family trying to Catch The Spy, the Wu Feng spies trying to Complete Their Mission, gong ziyu trying to Prove Himself as the zhiren, and ofc there's romance sprinkled around. that's p much the gist of the show.
listen listen listen... i know this show has a bad rep in the cdrama circles, i agree. the plot is......HMM and it tries to hard to be one of those clever mysteries when it should just be what it is which is p much an idol drama?? i mean...it is a guo jingming show, we weren't going in expecting to be wowed by the plot. i think if they'd just stuck to the basics, this would have been a stronger show, but imo this wasn't bad bad. the worldbuilding was good and the characters were interesting, and like i said, the whole thing is shot really beautifully!!
the ending was......but i'll keep this spoiler free and just say that it was HMMMMM and v unnecessary what they did.
with the preface that i watched it without much expectations as to the plot, i enjoyed a lot of parts of the show! it's an incredibly easy watch, and because it's only 24 eps, the pacing is quick and conflicts don't tend to drag on for too long. if you're looking for some easy entertainment, i'd say go for it, but if you have Standards regarding plot etc, this is probably not the show for you

It’s worth watching only for the scene of the grandmother telling Hua Zhi her and grandfather’s story.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hua Zhi: So you liked grandfather for his personality?
Grandma: lmao, of course not, I liked him because he was pretty
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And then telling her that she should choose someone she loves regardless of titles, family, career, fame, etc. That when she does she should come to her and grandma would settle her dowry.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Last time I was so pleasantly surprised by a marriage/relationship dialogue between a (grand)parent and a child was in Royal Rumors when ML (the crown prince) basically told his father (the emperor) “pls don’t set up an arranged marriage for me” and the emperor was like “ok”.

1, 3 & 4 for the writer asks!
1. the last sentence you wrote
“A– a competition?” Qiao Zhi’s voice was thick with disbelief.
“A tournament.” Crimson Rain smirked at their reaction. “If it helps you to think of it that way.”
Verifying over his shoulder, Shi Dan sneers, “What else could this possibly mean?”
“It's something long overdue–a comeuppance,” Crimson Rain said.
3. how you feel about your current WIP
i already mentioned the tournament fic, so i'll talk about an original work i've been...... slowly.... working on... uuggghhh it's something i started and realized the start wasn't quite right but i haven't figured out What was wrong about it, so i've basically gone back to re-examining characters, since something about it felt out of character and maybe that's where the problem is. it's also possible i'm just making everything too complicated and i need to start somewhere simpler
4. a story idea you haven't written yet
all my ideas are for tgcf right now, so i had another post-canon fic idea where xie lian and hua cheng put on an exhibition fight for ghost city for fun, maybe in the lead-up to their wedding or as a new holiday celebration/tradition in ghost city. it's all showy moves and flirty taunting each other while ghost city does what it does best: bets on anything they can think of, from how many butterflies each of them will have on their clothing to what weapons they'll use (e-ming doesn't like participating unless it's wielded by xie lian) to how long the match will last

can you plz infodump about your ocs?? so new people to your blog can understand them
Hey, anon? I hope you know that this ask is the best one I’ve gotten in all my 3 1/2 years on this hellsite, so thank you!! You really don’t need to know about my OCs to follow this blog cause a) I post once in a blue moon nowadays, and b) it’s rarely about my OCs, BUT SINCE YOU ASKED-
K, so, my main OCs are Suiren and Midori, sisters who just so happen to be Ghazan and Ming-Hua’s daughters. They were 7 and 4 respectively when their parents were imprisoned for trying to kidnap Korra, which led to them being placed in the ‘care’ of Ghazan’s older sister, Haya. What happens to them after that? Well, you’d have to be more specific, since I have about a trillion different AUs featuring them. The two most important ones (aka the ones written down) are:
1. Seeds of the Red Lotus. The very first fic I wrote about them, which I... haven’t updated in two years. It currently stands at 5 chapters BUT I am in the process of rewriting and continuing it. The basic concept is that the girls grow up in utter misery under Haya’s iron fist, and in a desperate attempt to get enough money to leave and live a happy, comfortable life somewhere else, Suiren becomes an assassin at the bright old age of 17. Fast forward 6 years, and Team Avatar, unable to take down the Earth Empire on their own, hire her to kill Kuvira
2. Under the Oak’s Shade. A rather self indulgent AU written as a form of catharsis and spiritual healing. Six months into living with Haya, the girls are taken in by Zhi, a cranky lesbian with a bad sense of direction/P’Li’s firebending teacher from the Red Lotus/my friend @katkastrofa‘s OC from her fic Lost and Found (which, unlike the multichaps I write, is complete and you should go read it immediately). Once I pull myself together to actually figure out how the next instalment in the series should go, this will, most likely, eventually become a Red Lotus Korra AU, which I’m definitely looking forward to writing.
Now that the basics are out of the way, let’s get to actual infodumping about my two precious cinnamon rolls. Most of this info is from SotRL-verse, as that is the main story I’ve got about them, so keep that in mind
-
Suiren:
23 years old as of 174 AG. Master waterbender and deadly assassin. Cold, calculating and precise in everything she does, leaving no room for error. Takes no shit from anyone, is fiercely defensive and independent, and is the last person to ever accept any help or charity. Confident in her abilities and borderline cocky at times, a lot of which is a front. Extremely short tempered, nihilistic, cynical and high strung, not willing to let anyone get close enough to her to see her hidden vulnerabilities
She wasn’t always like this. A long time ago, back before she lost her parents, she was much, much softer, kinder and more gentle. Her parents called her their little water lily, and the nickname suited her well. However, P’Li’s nickname for her was ‘my little firecracker’, so she very much still had quite a temper even back then. Overall, she was a happy little girl with bright eyes and a mischievous smile who was determined to excel in her waterbending lessons. She was Ming-Hua’s pride and joy. 16 years of taking the brunt of Haya’s anger to shield her sister, as well as destroying the part of herself that wouldn’t let her mindlessly do the bidding of whoever paid her, changed her, perhaps irreversibly.
Her old life still haunts her, though. Genetics played a cruel joke on her – the silky black hair reaching below her waist, the angular features, the prominent cheekbones, the (relatively) short height – it all serves to make her see her mother every single time she glances in the mirror. Being just like her mother was something she once aspired to, but now follows her like a curse. Even the things she got from her dad, dark skin and golden brown eyes, don’t help, and just make her look like Haya, especially when she’s angry
There is another side to her that no one but Midori gets to see. She may not be as soft as sixteen years ago, but she is still capable of love and gentleness. She loves her sister more than anything else in life, has already killed and would die for her. She is very protective of Midori (though often to a fault). She hugs her tight and kisses her forehead and cheeks, quietly sings her (their mother’s) lullabies as she calms her down from a nightmare, heals any and all her wounds, tells her stories of their parents, always puts her first no matter how pained and exhausted she herself is... In short, Suiren took on the role of a self sacrificing parent a long time ago and has played it well
Suiren is a distinguished lesbian but can’t keep a partner longer than a few weeks. Girls fawn all over her, but once they see past the pretty face and confident demeanour and notice everything wrong with her, they run (which only serves to make Suiren’s abandonment issues worse). She has taken to sticking to one night stands when she needs an outlet for her frustrations, convinced she will never have, and isn’t deserving of, a long lasting, loving relationship
She struggles severely with her mental health, constantly plagued by what she has done. She tries to limit her sleep to avoid nightmares that she knows will come and represses all emotions except for anger as that is the safest to latch onto and channel into killing. She is almost always on edge and feels pressure mounting with every single day. Very prone to overstimulation when it comes to noise, light and people. The only times she ever relaxes (or, at least, pretends to) is when she’s alone with Midori or with Lotus, her pet sabertooth moose lion.
To sum up: the poor girl is a vessel for my trauma and deserves a 30 hour nap, a hug, a warm blanket, the whole world and her parents back
-
Midori:
20 years old as of 174 AG. Earthbender, though not very good at it. She discovered her earthbending only a few months before losing her parents, and had no one to teach her since then. She is naturally kindhearted and hardworking, always trying to help out where she can and seem useful. Quiet and anxious, she prefers to stick to the background and draw as little attention to herself as possible (which is in fact a defence mechanism against Haya’s treatment of her but, y’know, let’s not get into that rn)
Sixteen years ago, Midori was a bright and happy little girl, wanting nothing more than for everyone around her to be happy as well. Always full of energy, she could talk and ramble for hours about anything that crossed her mind. Just as mischievous as her sister, she knew she was the baby of the family and could get away with anything, though to her credit, she didn’t abuse that much. Her parents called her their little Seedling, the youngest of them all so full of potential and eager to grow and make her parents proud. P’Li often called her a cuddlebug for her affectionate nature (am I stealing that from Kat’s fic bc it made me scream into my pillow for five minutes straight? Maybe. You can’t prove anything).
In present age, she’s a lot more similar to her childhood self than Suiren is. She doesn’t talk that much anymore, if at all, and her happiness is often clouded by the harsh world around her, but some of that cheerfulness still shines through, especially when she’s alone with Suiren or with Tenzin’s kids. The energy once used for rambling and chasing butterflies and racing with her sister is now almost always redirected into chores and housework, though if Suiren offered, she’d gladly race her again (and probably win tbh, her legs are longer and Renny prefers faster methods than running)
She doesn’t remember her parents well, and their faces have blurred beyond recognition in her mind. It’s why her appearance doesn’t affect her as much as Renny’s own does her. She’s not a carbon copy of either of her parents like Suiren is, she’s more of an even mix. She knows what Suiren had told her, that she has their mother’s eyes and their father’s nose, but can’t piece anything together in her head. She keeps her hair, as dark and silky as Suiren’s, though thicker, at shoulder length, a bit uneven in places as she cuts it herself. As a child, Ghazan would tie her hair into twin pigtails every morning and she never let anyone else do it. She hasn’t styled her hair in any way since she took those pigtails out before going to bed the night their parents left
A disaster bisexual, proven by the fact that out of all people in the world, she falls for Opal Beifong. You know, the step sister of the woman Midori’s sister has to kill (or die trying), and the daughter of the woman who killed Midori’s beloved auntie P’Li. Yeah, tough case. Anyway, turns out, there is a limited supply of Ghazan’s charm in his genetic code and it all got passed down to Renny, because ‘Dori herself turns into an awkward mess whenever the opportunity to flirt arises. It’s fine though, Opal still finds her adorable. Also she probably had a small crush on Bolin when they first met, but that was because he was one of the only people her age to be nice to her and she got over it quickly
Remember how I said she was quiet and anxious? Yeah, understatement of the century. Her anxiety follows her around throughout her day and is the driving force behind all of her decisions. Many things, from raised voices to passive aggressiveness to bad moods to unfinished housework, can trigger it. When it does, she clams up and curls in on herself, but tries her best to deescalate or rectify the situation. She’s also very sensitive to any kind of conflict, even when she’s not part of it. Midori also worries a lot for Suiren while she’s away on missions, as she knows she’ll completely fall apart if something were to happen to Renny. She has nightmares about it often, almost every night that Suiren is not there. Little does she know, Suiren has similar worries over losing her.
Another big thing is her major inferiority complex. She looks at her big sister and sees someone who has always been talented, powerful and capable. Someone who can do so many things without even breaking a sweat. Someone who has girls fawning all over her. And then ‘Dori looks at herself and sees none of those things. She doesn’t hate Suiren for it, not at all, but tiny inklings of disdain sometimes take form. She tries hard to ignore it, but often can do nothing but listen to those thoughts swirl around in her head.
In summary: An anxious mess of a girl who is in desperate need of a proper support system and someone (*cough* Opal *cough*) who could assure her that she is enough and that it doesn’t matter if she isn’t like her sister, she’s perfect just the way she is
-
If you want me to elaborate on any of this (and this goes for everyone, not just anon) my askbox is always open and my desire to infodump about my precious traumatised babies never wavers

Manhua/Light Novel: Release That Witch
Been reading this since covid started and recently caught up.
Anyway, Fangkai Nage Nuwu or Release That Witch by the writer/artist duo Er Mu and Zhi Hua Wenhua is about an Engineer from I think modern day China who one day transmigrates into the body of Roland Wimbledon, the fourth son of the royal family, who before the protag entered his body was kinda considered the fuck-up, fail-son of the kingdom of Graycastle, who was sent to manage tiny shithole village in the boonies to not mess up anyplace important called Border Town. Or rather, there is a succession crisis of sorts, between the five children of the King and each were given a piece of territory to govern for 5 years and the one who proved to be the most apt at it would get the throne, but Roland was the one basically no one had any hopes or expectations in, so he was given the most worthless territory, and the original Roland was happy lazing away in comfort.
Now, the setting is a fantasy world stuck roughly in the medieval times, but there is magic which seems to solely originate in some women who are considered to be witches and are treated with hostility, fear and suspicion, and it is a capital crime against the kingdom and mainly the church to be one. They are very "one shall not suffer a witch to live" over there, and the second our protag becomes Roland, he was actually in the middle of one such execution, where a town was about to publically execute Anna who can control and produce fire and who used her powers to save her father from a cave-in accident in the mine he worked in.
There also exist special stones that people wear as amulets which can completely nullify a witches power, called God's Locket of Retribution, which is how normal people can match witches, at least to a point. The true manner of control though is that Witches are isolated, uneducated, poor and scared children and women who have the full power of the state, the church and the society turned against them, most of which do not understand and in fact fear their own powers and constantly hide it, so they are usually easily apprehended. Even Anna was turned in to the authorities by her own party whom she had just saved, so widespread is the fear and hatred towards witches in this world.
This is the world in which our protag who I will call Roland from now on since that is the identity he assumes almost immediately. Now, him being a modern, practical man is initially not really buying the witchcraft allegations and cancels the execution for now, which is shocking to the rest of the people since the prince wasn't really someone like that.
Roland decides to at least hear the witch out, and she explains the exact circumstances, all the while his two advisors are urging him to execute her. Roland, still unconvinced about the existence of magical powers dares her to show her powers to him and takes off the stone that prevents her from using her powers, after which Anna immediately uses her magic to burn through her chains and prison cell, firmly proving that magic is real and that hers in particular is immense. Having showed Roland what she can do, she still wants them to go ahead with the execution, knowing that she doesn't really have anything to live for, now that her own family has forsaken her and everyone hates her.
And now we enter the driving force and main theme of the story, because Roland refuses, gives her his jacket and tells her he will hire her, because her magic is incredible, and they can do some cool stuff with it.
So yeah, this is a technological uplifting/civ building story with very strong harem vibes, seeing that witches can only be female and Roland is quickly trying to gather as many witches under his banner as possible, because magic is fucking awesome and very, very useful, and many do, because (almost) everyone else hates them and wants to kill them.
There is interesting stuff there. Roland wants to create a place where Witches can live freely, because there is just a human gut instinct against the prosecution they face, but also partly driven but just how much of a fucking waste it is to kill people with magical powers.
So, with his modern knowledge of engineering and a lot of other stuff, and with Anna's control, precision and sheer powerful output over fire, they can slowly but surely industrialize. With time, more and more witches join, which opens up new tech branches and possibilities.
One cool thing is that the world building has some very fun building blocks. Witches are feared because sometimes their powers go haywire and do damage to everyone around them, but it is discovered that with Roland, because they use their powers constantly and hone their control, they do not have these issues, because most witches never use their powers out of fear for being seen and caught, which had the whole witch population in this negative feedback loop that and outsider interrupted. Another cool thing is that due to his scientific knowledge, he just knows a lot about the physics and chemistry of things, so when he imparts this knowledge or knowledge in general about the world, witches understand their own powers more and what they can do and reach newer heights. Once Anna learns what fire actually is, how it works, what chemistry is, due to that new understanding, she can do a lot more stuff now, simply because some stuff is just not something you can figure out without knowing a lot of stuff that simply didn't exist yet.
Furthermore, we also learn about the world itself, its past, the history of the Church, where the dogma against witches came from and what events have shaped the world as it is, and what exactly is going on in the world, where a lot of people are scheming. The Church is plotting to take over all kingdoms, three of Roland's other siblings are vying for the throne of Greycastle and the fourth, his younger sister, has seemingly gone radio-silent.
There is a lot going on there in this story. So if you like reading about tech uplifts, about someone explaining how to make gunpowder, steam engines, how to make concrete or explaining the periodic table, how to make cannons and railways electricity, especially by utilizing magic to do so, while also ancient conspiracies and institutional shifts are taking place and have taken place over centuries as plans to save the world from a demonic threat that is looming over the world, all of that is in Release That Witch.
Character wise, I have to say, I do not like Roland much. The saving grace of his character is that Roland is very much not magical per se. Almost every witch who has an ability that could be wielded in combat would stomp him, but even though he does not wield physical or magical power, in practice it is still very much a power fantasy because he is the most knowledgeable person in the world and he basically has the solutions to almost every problem thanks to his modern education. It makes more sense than in most other stories with a similar dynamic, that all the witches under his banner are absolutely devoted to him, grateful beyond belief, some even feeling romantic love for him, mainly because, well, in a world where there was no acceptance, not even tolerance and only fear and prosecution and dying a painful death at best, he created a space where they not only were accepted and allowed to prosper, but became respected and valued members of society, and even enjoyed to live in some of the more modern facilities he created.
Going from poor peasant with absolutely no future, to live with plumbing, electricity, food and shelter, respect, wages and the ability to learn and use their own abilities, yeah, that would make one fiercely loyal to the one guy who allowed for that to happen.
And while I said haremy vibes, Roland really only has eyes for Anna and she loves him right back, and Nightingale, probably my fav char so far, another witch also has feelings for Roland but knows he doesn't return them on the same level. There are no usual harem shenanigans going on, with the girls being comedically jealous of each other or arguing over boob sizes or whatever. There is this bittersweet air about Nightingale having this unrequited love, while also not wanting to ruin things. I said haremy because 96 % of the cast are ladies who are all super fans of the protag and while there are no Roland slips and lands face first on anyone's boobs or ass,
The reason i never quite clicked with Roland was that I just found him a bit insufferable and condescending, and later on when he meets his younger sister she is quite obviously not buying things. The Roland she knew was a petty, cowardly, pathetic skirt-chasing idiot who liked to drink, not someone who would champion the rights of witches and be able to produce incredibly technological and societal advances like that, and his attitude while trying to lie to her just rubbed me the wrong way, especially seeing that he could have been honest with her and nothing would have changed. No one in the world gives a shit about OG Roland, no one.
So yeah, I read a few of the light novels a couple of years ago, but have since then switched to the manhua, because the colored art is just neat and kinda better written and combat and magic looks cool and the exposition on the tech is more engaging that way. I also quite like some of the character designs and I will express a lot of interest in the whole conspiracies, the secrets behind the Church and its formation and the connection to the demon threat.
I just never clicked with the main char too much, and the story is obviously not for everyone. Still, there are a lot of upsides, especially if you want a tech uplift story. It is just a bit self-indulgent at times, and Roland attitude is just a bit grating to me. Also, some dream stuff happens later on, which I wasn't a big fan of, and yeah, there is some societal, political stuff and values imposed by Roland that I wasn't super fond of, especially since it is presented very non-critically with Roland just stating things as fact, but meh, that sort of stuff comes kinda with the territory. I would like it if there was like, in story pushback or consequences of Roland's rule, but since he is modernizing and effectively creating way better living conditions for everyone under his rule and has overwhelming military strength thanks to the magic wielding witches AND gunpowder weapons AND an actual navy and artillery while all of his enemies are levies and knights, the message very much is that Roland just rules.
Worth checking out at least. The Light Novels are completely, to my understanding, and the manhua has 500 chapters as of the time of writing, so there is a lot to read.
