Hello Ren!!! You get several paragraphs about Fay and Lou's terrible divorce :D

They're like the inverse of Sorian and Avis, because it was less clear-cut what exactly made everything fall apart. There were first the general resentments of Fay being mostly a stay-at-home mom while Lou sunk way too much of his time in the bakery - simultaneously a moneymaker, a status symbol, and the target of Fay's ire. But this was a simmer of a conflict. Things didn't start escalating until Isabel came out as trans when she was 11. Neither Fay nor Lou had any trouble with this, at least until Lou made it all about him. He would never ask Isabel to be someone she wasn't, no, but now he was left high and dry with no son to inherit his bakery, to carry on the patrilineal tradition he'd singlehandedly revived. All that time he spent there was a waste without an heir, you know?

Fay took this as proof that he did care about the bakery more than his family, and they started to fight more and more. In his deepening unhappiness Lou accidentally found a new love interest (along the lines of "she happened to help me with bakery taxes" or something) and realized that oh, maybe he really didn't need to be in this miserable marriage anymore. I think it's actually more interesting if they were "good" and never banged prior to the divorce, because that was immaterial as soon as Lou told Fay that he'd found a new partner so maybe it was time they broke up. This was the moment when Fay's poorly attached hinges flew off and she began throwing everything of his in a pile at the bottom of the stairs, followed by screaming at him to leave so loudly that the neighbors could hear.

After that the divorce should have been quick but they argued about the bakery revenues and the house and custody of Rodney and Isabel (who were 10 and 13 when the whole debacle started and pretty clearly sided with Fay, because at least she'd always been there) and whether they could get a fault divorce (honestly I'm not sure but Fay wanted one) and finally, a year and a half later, the divorce was finalized. Lou let Fay offload the house onto him and she, Isabel, and Rodney left for Antarac. He got remarried to his new partner, Annette, who he's still married to, and they later adopted a kid, Hatt, who's the middle sibling age-wise between them, Rodney, and Isabel. I have yet to work out a lot of Hatt's background but between them and Annette, Lou has learned quite a lot about how not to be transphobic and also how not to be weird by adding a "Be My Heir" letter into the mix of yearly birthday cards to your son (just don't do that). Hatt is all too happy to be the heir to the bakery but had the advantage of being adopted as a teenager and therefore not raised with Expectations like Isabel and Rodney (I suspect they were like Annette's nibling or cousin to begin with). Annette ends up low-key being Isabel's hero because she had a double mastectomy for cancer reasons and therefore also has a flat chest.

I'm indisposed for doodles/picrews atm but I want to make some of them later and get their designs a little more nailed down.

i dont have an actual name for it but depressed college au is probably one of my favorites. i dont really care for the adults in paranatural and thinking about how the activity club/others might grow up and continue their lives is so much more interesting to me

#i started reading this comic when i was 15? i think? and now im recently 23. i cant really say i relate or want to relate to 12 year olds an #y more. and yeah i prefer a lot more nuance and complexity when crafting+ reading stories #but when your protags are 12. well. yeah pass #pnats adults are fine but the kids are the ones i have any actual emotional interest or compulsion towards #so when i write something that might be less 'yippee whimsical wacky adventures' and the options are spender and zarei. again theyre fine bu #t i dont really care enough about spender and zarei #but i still want to write about adults you know. BEING 12 was hard enough you could not PAY me to go back into that headspace #honestly thats actually why most of wizard au takes place in their later school years #like you know those aged up mob psycho 100 aus. where mob is like a fireman and ritsu is an english major and theyre not exactly having epic #adventures anymore but theyre coming into themselves etc. god. thats the stuff 2 me #i used to hate aged up aus as a teenager bc i thought it was the author/artists excuse to put kids in weird situations. and idk considering #it was 2015. yeah fair. but i do think i get it now. teenage years are hard and theres a certain part of that hardness that i love. things #like growing up [from a 17yo perspective] and people you love going to college and trying to find yourself and dealing w friends and fear #for the future. THOSE are the kind of teen stories i like reading about. but when you start getting tired and mellowing out and things that #come with the end of college and grad school and growing up [from a 22yos perspective] is similar. but its more somber. youre older now #when the protagonists become people. thats what i like #wizard au is fun as a huge intense magical adventure project but depressed college au is just like. where i can project. #drinking an entire pack of mikes hard lemonade by myself and lying on the floor talking to friends about how im scared and pushing myself #towards a career that i love but dont know i can achieve. friends leaving. getting an apartment for the first time. and the second and #the third. that feels better when i can sit down and go 'okay. someday isabel will do this too. i might not understand. my friends might not #understand. nobody could understand and i could be alone. but max woke up with a hangover today and i know what that feels like' etc #idk just feels better. taking your favorite characters with you while you go through things. by which i mean #'taking my favorite characters and making them go through things' #you want them to be safe and happy and having fun. i want them to feel fear. we both know what we want from fiction and treasure each #depressed college au

I actually talked about the one that made me want to scream over here, but "queueing" is a similar sort of scene, where Spinder gets into a different unusual conversation. The Nicea has been queueing for a warp transit for hours, Tristan has taken a sleeping pill, and Rodney is left having to make his first non-training warp transit:

The door slid open six inches and Spinder blinked sleepily up at him. “What?” he said with the distance of someone still shaking off a dream. “We’re clear to transit in a few minutes, and I just need someone to sit on the bridge with me while I do it.” He raised his eyebrows but didn’t argue. “Let me get some pants on. I’ll be right there.” The door shut again. Rodney decided to trust him and go back to the pilot’s seat. Tristan’s seat. It felt too big, even though it was only marginally larger than his own. He was about to take the unnecessary step of strapping himself in when he remembered that his coffee was halfway across the bridge and went to grab it. Spinder showed up at the same time, half-covering a massive yawn while he dropped into his usual seat. The pants he’d put on were just the lower half of his flight suit, zipped up to his waist with the sleeves tied over it.

"Farewell to the ancestors" was previously an almost-empty scene where I planned to have Tristan visit the graveyard where most of her family is buried and say goodbye to them before the trip, but this ask made me want to work on it some more:

Tristan climbed to the top of the hill, weaving the familiar path through the generations of her family’s gravestones. At each one, she ran a hand over the small dome carved from the top of the stone, feeling the grooves left by increasing generations of hands. On the oldest markers at the top, the dome had started to become a valley.

And "Tatiana Arvenswold" is one of my favorites. This is deep into their space journey, after assorted disasters, when Spinder and Isabel first meet Tatya, who stays with them pretty much to the end of the book:

Isabel was aware of someone passing their table, but didn’t look up until a pale brown hand rapped on the tabletop. Standing over her was a person whose brown hair seemed to be all cowlicks, even into their loose ponytail, with a scruffy half-attempt at a chinstrap beard and a wide baby-pink collar choker peeking out past the massive triangular lapels of their khaki jacket. They were completely ignoring her in favor of Spinder, and she prepared herself to bolster his defense. “Hey, are you Spinder?” they asked. “You look just like the picture Gwinny sent me.” Spinder blinked. “I am. Are you…the warp witch?” They grinned. “Tatiana Arvenswold at your service. She-her or whatever you feel like.” They turned just enough that Isabel could see the silver heart-shaped ring in the front of their choker. Their eyes lingered on her face, and at first she thought they were looking at her bruises in order to make a dumbass comment about them. Then she got a full once-over, and when their eyes met again Tatiana’s gaze was thirsty. “And who are you?” “I’m Isabel,” she said. “The captain of the Nicea.” “Oh, nice, nice. So, uh, y’all in need of a warp witch? Or a finder?”

#had to think about 'blinking up' for a second but no Rodney is in fact taller than Spinder.
