[Kingdom Hearts] Occupational Hazard
Summary: By far, Ven’s got the most boring job at the flower shop; the cashier. Sitting day in and day out for someone to browse along the rows of flowers and gardening tools, then probably walk right out again. Sometimes an interesting thing would happen- but they were few and far between. [flower shop AU focused on UX kids][Part 6 in a series of oneshots][VenxOC][EphemerxOC/F!Player]

Ven thought about having children exactly once before. It had been a really random thought too. What made him space out that day? Had he been preparing for a test, or was it just another slow day at the flower shop? He hated that he had daydreamed about it enough that he knew exactly what kind of kid he wanted. (A girl, by the way- with the rest depending on if he could convince his ideal lady of being with him.) Either way, seeing Ephemer’s 19 month old son brought about feelings of wanting to be a father one day, while also making him glad that he wasn’t.
Furthermore, he wasn’t used to Ephemer being dressed to the nines either. The teen couldn’t help but stare at his coworker as Ephemer handed off various baby supplies to Skuld. It was a weird juxtaposition seeing Ephemer in a well pressed suit, and passing a wrinkled and well worn duffle bag to Skuld.
“There should be more than enough diapers to cover any accidents he’ll have in the next few hours.” Ephemer told Skuld. “Anora insisted we keep him from eating the foods that make him super gassy, just in case. She’s a smart one, that Anora. There’s a reason why she’s my wife.”
“Don’t have to convince me.” Skuld snorted. “Don’t know why you’re so dressed up for a night to the movies. We all know you two are going to be making out in the back of the car by the end of the night.”
Ephemer’s face immediately went up in a deep scarlet. He let out a sheepish laugh as he scratched the back of his neck. Skuld just laughed at him.
“Luca will be safe with me,” she then told him. “We’ve got a supply truck coming around in another hour or so, Thursdays are usually kinda dead anyway, and Ven’ll be here manning the main front. The next four hours will go by quickly.”
“I knew he’d be safe.” Ephemer laughed, albeit somewhat forced. “It’s how often you’ll be actually looking after him. You’re the one babysitting, and you’re still at work.”
Skuld gave Ephemer a rather dry laugh of her own before telling him, “I can do both.”
At Ephemer’s skeptic raise of his eyebrow, Skuld went on to say, “I will. After the truck gets here, my attention will be on nothing else.”
“Right…” Ephemer mused. He gave a shake of his head before getting down to Luca’s height. His son had been politely standing next to him while the old friends talked. Luca seemed to have understanding of what was going on- Ven just couldn’t get over those large blue-grey eyes. They just… stared between Ephemer and Skuld with severe inquisition. It almost made Luca look a good three or so years older. So young and yet so serious looking…
(Oh no, now Ven wanted to ask Brain if there were any surviving photos of Sabrina as a baby. She would hate knowing that he saw them, but he had to know. Did she always look that serious at a young age too?)
Ephemer gave his son a bright smile- one that was almost returned.
“You be good for Auntie Skuld and Venny, alright Luca?”
The toddler looked at his father for a long time, the wheels turning in his younger mind to register what was said, before giving a little nod. Ephemer grinned as he ruffled his son’s hair. He grunted slightly as he got back up (which Skuld was quick to snicker at) before starting his way out the door.
“See you two in five hours.” Ephemer waved at them.
“You told me earlier it was going to be four.” Skuld refuted, putting a hand on her hip. Ephemer just shrugged.
“You know I have a hard time keeping my hands off my wife, Skuld. And without a kid around? We’re practically kids again ourselves.”
Skuld let out a small ‘tsk’ sound and smirk. “Yeah, yeah. Get outta here. Go conceive your next child away from the flower shop for once.”
Even with his face flushing again, Ephemer gave her a playful salute before closing the door behind him. Skuld just looked at the door for a moment or so just to shake her head at him.
“Come up, Luca.” she then told the toddler, bending down a bit and extending her arms to him. “We gotta look out for the delivery guy.”
Luca gave her a glare so mean, Ven had to cough to cover up his laugh. The toddler even went into a string of sounds that could have been interpreted as sass. But he went over to Skuld, regardless. He allowed himself to be picked up by the woman, and together they disappeared into the back room. With the boss out of earshot, Ven felt free to let out the snicker he had been holding in for the past three minutes. The last thing on his mind was how Skuld would inevitably take her work at the flower shop over watching Luca. He’d figure it out soon- he just wished that peace had lasted a bit longer.
. . .
A good hour or so later, and Ven decided to make himself useful by making sure everything had a price sticker on it. No ceramic pot could go unturned without a sticker declaring its probably high ball price. Better than just sitting at the register and drifting off into who knows where until Skuld caught him.
Ven happened to notice Luca out of the corner of his eye. The toddler casually walked (or as casually as you could at 19 months, since you didn’t quite have the best balance still) out of the backroom and into the main store front. Ven slowed his movements a bit to watch Luca look over the area, then go over to a certain large vase with some faux reeds in it. It was rather amusing watching Luca plonk his little bottom down in front of it.  Ven gave a quiet snort before properly returning to his work. He almost had to stop because something new happened.
Luca started babbling at the flowers.
At least, Ven thought it still counted as babbling. Every now and again he could pick out sounds that certainly sounded like real words; like ‘same’, and ‘daddy’, and ‘kiss-shun’, and ‘mommy.’ Or maybe Ven was imagining it. Putting price tags on everything was ridiculously boring.
“Ven!” Skuld suddenly shouted from the backroom, scaring both Ven and Luca alike. “Do you see Luca?”
“Yeah.” he lazily replied. “He’s out here talking to some reeds.”
Skuld immediately left the backroom just to glare at Ven. He flinched a little at her gaze.
“Get him away from those!” she demanded. “I’m still going over what’s come in.”
Ven blinked at her, then looked over at Luca. The kid was literally doing nothing but staring at the other flowers now. He probably even had an acute awareness he was being talked about, but not being talked to. Ven turned his attention back to Skuld with a face that was trying to feign innocence.
“Why? They're edible.”
“Not when you're still able to choke on fine cut food!” his boss immediately retorted. All it did was spark a moment of defiance.
“Skuld, there are full grown adults that still choke on normal cut food. Your point is getting more moot by the moment.”
“I can't believe you and Sabrina aren't dating yet.” Skuld mumbled under her breath. “You share the same amount of… Urg. Just get Luca away from those flowers!”
Perhaps a bit too amused at his superior's frustration, Ven let out a short chortle before setting the price stickers down. Skuld only grimaced as she went to the backroom again. Still grinning, Ven walked over to Luca, finding himself bemused by the kid still, and asked without meaning any harm; “Whatcha doing there, Luca?”
The toddler immediately jumped, then looked up at Ven with wide, curious eyes. Slowly, as if he were aware he could be in trouble, Luca's little face started to break. Poor Ven was in no way prepared for the kid's wailing. He immediately flinched and covered his ears at the sound.
“You're not in trouble! You're not in trouble!” Ven quickly said, awkwardly making his way down to the floor to be at Luca's eye level. “Just gotta be careful, alright?”
But this didn't stop Luca from crying. If it was any consideration, Ven was sure the toddler didn't even hear him. Cursing under his breath, Ven looked around the flower shop for anything that could distract Luca. There were some plush toys in a display close by. Maybe one of those would work? Ven wasn’t going to leave it up to guessing. He quickly went to the display, quickly located and snatched a dolphin plush, then went back over to Luca.
“Here there buddy,” he said, bringing the plush close to Luca’s eye range. “Do you wanna cuddle buddy?”
Luca stopped crying just long enough to give the plush a glance, shove it of his eyesight, and let out a rather clear, very angry, “No!”
Ven let out a long (and very tired) sigh of defeat. Wasn't Skuld the one that was supposed to be babysitting this tiny person? Why did it feel like he was doing all the work?
But first, he had to shut Luca up.
What else could Ven distract Luca with? Better question- what did Luca even like? Was there anything in this store that could calm this kid long enough so he wasn’t the loudest sound on the block? All this crying had to be stressful for him. Heck, it was stressful for Ven! An even better question right about now was ‘where on earth is Skuld?!’ because that was rather important too. Could she really not hear Luca wailing from the backroom? Maybe he should check on her…
Luca’s crying hit a note so high pitched the Ven flinched. He turned his attention back to the kid in defeat. Unsure of what else to do, he tried to rack his brain on what Ephemer and Anora did to calm Luca down. But that was just the thing, wasn’t it? Usually Luca wasn’t whining. Ven did get an idea though. Carefully, Ven put his hand on Luca’s head, trying to mimic the way Ephemer ruffled his son’s hair. To his surprise, it actually seemed to work. Luca started to settle down little by little until he gave nothing more than a few sniffles.
“There you go, buddy.” Ven cooed, sounding like he was more addressing an angry bear than a child. “Feel better now?”
Luca rubbed his eyes before turning to Ven. It was slow to make sure Ven didn’t stop gently kneading his fingers into Luca’s hair. The toddler gave Ven a few tired blinks. Apparently crying for five minutes straight was particularly draining.
“Tell me.” Luca said to Ven, pointing to an arrangement to his left. Ven blinked. He didn’t hallucinate that sentence, right?
“Tell you what? About the flowers?”
Luca gave him a determined nod.
“But I don’t know-” Ven tried to tell him, but Luca was a smart kid. He purposely started to make his face break again, and even started a little whimper before Ven caught on. “Wait, wait, wait!” Ven quickly stammered, removing his hand from Luca’s head to throw them up in defense. “I might know some stuff. And look, I could probably look some things up on my phone too. Wouldn’t that be cool?”
Still milking his leverage over Ven , Luca wiped his eyes as he gave another nod. Ven let out a relieved sigh. It should be that hard to fake what he knew about plants, right? As Luca gave a long yawn, Ven hoped that he could probably even be able to lull the kid into sleep. Honestly, he was practically doing Skuld’s job for her.
. . .
Ephemer and Anora returned to the flower shop thirty minutes earlier than expected. They seemed to be in good spirits, so the date must have gone on well enough. Skuld was quick to hand Luca and his baby paraphernalia back to his parents.
“He didn’t give you any trouble, did he?” Ephemer asked, taking the duffle bag as Anora got their son.
“Not at all.” Skuld affirmed. “I was a bit preoccupied with the shipment that came in, so Ven helped out a bit.”
Hearing this, Ephemer and Anora looked at Skuld like she had proposed murder. Ephemer was the one who let out a forced laugh before saying,  “Skuld…? Your shift ended before I dropped Luca off, that’s why we left him with you.”
“Knew it.” Ven mumbled under his breath. The parents looked at him before returning their attention to the rather unapologetic Skuld.
“I still watched him.” she insisted. “And now I still have some work to do before heading home for the night. Ven’s shift is ending for the night, and we all know he won’t do the inventory count tonight.”
“Because at this time of night, we do it in the morning.” Ephemer told her. Skuld didn’t seem to pick up on his annoyance. Instead, she went to the backroom before anyone could stop her.
Ephemer let out a long sigh of exhaustion. He should have known better, honestly. He looked at Anora and grinned. It was meant as a signal for them to head out, but Anora had other plans. She carefully nudged Ephemer, giving him a small look that he could read well. Ephemer nodded before digging into his wallet to find a twenty dollar bill.
“Here Ven, take this,” he offered. Ven just looked back at him with the most bewildered look. Ephemer saw it and just laughed. “We all know how Skuld gets when she doesn’t leave work. I’ll come in on my next shift with another twenty for you.”
“But I don’t-” Ven tried to argue, but it was Anora who stepped up to place a gentle hand on Ventus’s elbow. The teen froze right then and there. It was honestly the more polite thing to do- Anora didn’t really have much of a grip on him.
“Thank you for watching Luca tonight.” she carefully told him- for a moment it made him wonder if she thought she was to blame for some reason. “If Ephemer doesn’t pay you back, I will. And that’s a promise.”
“O-oh no, ma’am.” Ven quickly stuttered out. “It’s fine! Honest! It wasn’t even a big deal. Nah. Not really. Luca’s a pretty cool kid when you sit down and play with him. Pretty smart too. Nothing to sweat about. Hardly interrupted anything. Really.”
Anora offered a polite smile, although Ven felt guilty under it all the same.
“See you later, Ven!” Ephemer waved as the family left the shop. Ven waved back, still feeling guilty from Anora’s generosity. Luca watched Ven from other his mother’s shoulder- the expression was particularly hard to decipher. Ven just hoped it was one of respect. That little brat better not forget what Ven did for him today.
“Definitely having a girl.” Ven mumbled under his breath before clocking out for the day.

So, I'll probably be going through and adjusting my muse roster. There's a few muses I put in there that I hadn't exactly planned on writing much, if at all, because I had simply wanted to fill space. Dominant muses here are easily Vanitas (obviously, and at the top), Aqua (unsurprisingly, and a very close second), and Sora (which, honestly, kinda caught me off guard). That's not to say I will be clearing my list! A couple of muses I do plan to keep, even if I haven't written for them yet. And, I'm sure there's more to come, still (low key considering Ephemer, at least, as another test muse).
I'll also be going through and adjusting where the muses I keep will stand with my desire to write them. I can't say I will have any tertiary muses after this adjustment, and my primaries will be a bit more limited. This change will probably be happening after I get settled in from work, today.

Daybreak Academy: Chapter 81
Case of Gula
Summary: In which Gula has an unconventional way of scoping out a local graffiti artist. Word Count: 1,483 First | Previous | Next ☆ ⚬ ☆ ⚬ ☆ ⚬ ☆ ⚬ ☆ ⚬ ☆ ⚬ ☆ ⚬ ☆ ⚬ ☆
Well, there was no way that Gula could deny this particular stunt. Someone had spray painted a rather massive mural on the backside of the Leopardus boys' dorms. The most unfortunate shame was that it wasn't a bad mural either. It depicted a leopard, crouching as if it were ready to pounce on its prey. Behind it was a near midnight sky colored with Daybreak Academy’s signature colors: ivory cream and purple. If you looked close enough, you could almost see each individual hair on the leopard and the white glistening in its eye.
Gula brushed a hand against the mural, admiring the amount of detail that had gone into it. The paint had gone dry but the color was still vibrant. Whoever had done this had finished it recently. If not early this morning, then it must have been late last night. Gula's eyes traced from the main mural to the signature- a tag in this case consisting of bubble lettering with the artist's initials. At least, he assumed they were the artist's initials, and not some dedication to who the mural was designed for.
The Leopardus headmaster took a step back from the mural and placed his hands on his hips. He knew bits and pieces of the art scene. He knew that this paint certainly was not water based, as it didn’t show any sign of dripping. The vibrant colors also indicated that it was a good brand of paint too; barely any filler ingredients that would make the color duller in comparison. Gula gave a small, thoughtful hum to himself as he started to pull out his phone. He had an idea, he wasn’t sure if it would work or not, but it was definitely worth the shot.
He punched a number in his phone and waited for it to ring over. Just when he thought that he was going to get voicemail, the friendly voice of the music director (who also happened to keep a tight booking on the auditorium) answered her phone.
“Hey Ms. A,” Gula greeted with a chipper tone. “I've gotta question; is the auditorium booked for anything this afternoon? I've got some kids I need to guilt trip.”
. . .
If there was one thing about Leopardus students, it was that if they were called for an unannounced assembly, they either looked completely annoyed or totally guilty. Gula learned far long ago that the kids who looked the most guilty, were not the ones he needed to rat out. Not during these seemingly random assemblies for just the Leopardus house, any way.
Gula gave a small head count to make sure all the Leopardus students were in attendance before starting his speech.
“Good afternoon, everyone!” he greeted in a loud, but not demanding, voice. “Everyone enjoying the first Monday in November?”
The auditorium then chorused with various degrees of enthusiasm. Gula couldn’t help but smirk. The faces on the students may change, but their attitudes never did.
“Sounds wonderful.” he said to them with a grin. “Now, I’m sure you’re all wondering why we’re having this little assembly. You see, either early this morning or late last night, someone gave the backside of the boys’ dorms a little makeover. Since I know the true artist isn’t going to show themselves that easily; I’ve set up a little test. Behind me is a large canvas- just large enough so everyone can spray paint a little something onto it. Doesn’t have to be big or bulky, I just want you to pick up a can of spray paint, make an impression on the canvas, then go on your merry way. I’m going to go by year first, then alphabetical order. Which means our first subject will be… Hana Aeducan.”
With this, Gula’s little theory and test was now underway. One by one, year by year, Gula called up every Leopardus student at Daybreak Academy. He watched as they picked up a paint can, did a small tag (or, in some cases, a single line), then left the stage without another word. The students who were shaking so hard that they could barely hold the cans straight gave him a good chuckle; they obviously were not the ones he was after.
He gave nods to the students he saw more regularly. In fact, a part of him expected Ephemer to question this assembly in one way or another, and that kid sure did not disappoint.
“Why are you doing this?” the 16 year old asked with a raise of his eyebrow once the two were close enough.
“Because if you did it, I would have already found out.” came the instant retort and knowing grin. Ephemer couldn’t argue with that; he even gave a small half shrug of indifference.
“Fair enough.” he decided before getting a good look at the spray paint cans.
“Let's see…” the boy went on to muse, possibly with full intentions to annoy Gula, “Which kind has the most vibrant color...?”
Gula cast the student a small side glance. “Ephemer, I have no idea; it's all the same color anyway. Just pick one and tag it already.”
A small chuckle came from Ephemer’s lips as he picked out a spray paint. He did a small heart with the letters ‘E+A’ inside of it before leaving the stage. Gula let out a light laugh of his own before calling up the next student.
As he started to go into the later years, Gula was starting to wonder if he had been wrong. Perhaps his theory was off and it wasn't a Leopardus student that had tagged the dorms? It wasn't too uncommon for there to be overlap in student abilities, after all. But he had been so sure that it was someone in his house. The level of skill he had seen usually did come from Leopardus students. It wasn’t until Gula called up a Ninth Year student named Jake that he completely changed his mind about being wrong.
Jake, like many others before him, gave Gula a skeptic raise of his eyebrow before looking down at the spray paint. His first instinct was to grab the first can he saw, but then the young man paused. He hesitated, for only a moment, before moving his hand over to a different brand. Gula watched with interest as Jake shook the spray paint can as he tried to find a blank spot on the canvas. The young man then started a bubble outline that clearly gave away his initials.
If Gula wanted to, he would have ended the assembly right then and there. But he didn’t. He had to keep up the charade for a little bit longer- if only for effect.
. . .
Jake didn’t bother knocking on Gula’s office door before entering. Not that Gula was particularly strict on the choice. In fact, he had been waiting for Jake, sitting at his desk with his head resting on knitted hands.
“So you decided to give the back of the dorms a little makeover, huh?” the Leopardus headmaster teased. Knowing that he had been caught, Jake’s entire body stiffened for a moment before it turned into annoyance.
“So what?” Jake impatiently questioned. “Am I suspended now? Have to clean the whole mural by hand, or something?”
Gula lulled his head from side to side as he considered the idea. “No.” he decided. “If fact, I brought up the idea with Ira and the rest of them, and we were all agreed; how would you like to decorate some other bare areas around campus? There's this real ugly area behind the cafeteria that should really be cleaned up. A bit of color there would do wonders, don't you think?”
Jake looked like Gula had up and punched him in the jaw.
“You're not mad at me?”
“Oh I was,” the Leopardus headmaster agreed, “But then I saw the technique that went into your last piece. Did you outline everything first, or just go with your gut?”
For a moment, Jake just continued to give a dumbfounded stare. Eventually, he sputtered out a bewildered, “I used a block out method. Big shapes first, then fine tuning them into smaller details. I've never actually outlined anything before.”
Gula gave a very impressed nod at this discovery. “Impressive,” he even approved. “Hope it's not going to take too long- you're gonna get paid by the hour.”
“I… I'm what?”
“Didn't I mention? This isn't just a volunteer job, we're paying you. Invi rearranged the budget already. Aren't you special?”
Jake stood frozen in shock. Eventually, in a strangled voice, he tried to stammer. “T-thank you Headmaster… Headmaster Gula! I… Thank you!”
Not for the last or first time that day, Gula gave his student a knowing smirk. “My pleasure.” he told Jake in a pleasant voice. “Just don’t do it again. Our budget ain't that high.”

Daybreak Academy: Chapter 80
Spooky Scary Reflections
Summary: In which Sabrina wreaks havoc during the Halloween party and Anora’s reflection lies to her. Word Count: 1,681 First | Previous | Next ☆ ⚬ ☆ ⚬ ☆ ⚬ ☆ ⚬ ☆ ⚬ ☆ ⚬ ☆ ⚬ ☆ ⚬ ☆
Even though she recognized everyone in the Dandelions clubroom, Anora got a sudden wave of nausea regardless. There was only, what? Two more people than if she and Ephemer were a part of Pyra's study group? She shouldn't have been this nervous. Maybe she could tell herself that it was the way the clubroom had been decorated. The lights were off, but there were multiple battery-operated candles in bunches around the room. Someone had even put a plasma ball lamp in the center of the round table for extra ambiance. Over by the writing desk was a wireless stereo, playing music that definitely fit the Halloween atmosphere.
“We can leave whenever you want.” Ephemer reminded her, giving her hand a little squeeze. Anora looked at him and offered a smile. She could do this. It's not like this was any different than before. She knew everyone. This wasn't going to be hard at all.
“Gang way!” someone shouted before barreling by Anora and Ephemer. Whoever it was ended up clipping Anora's side, and both parties went staggering backward at the impact.
“Urg; sorry, sorry, sorry.” Anora's bumper quickly apologized. They hurried back to Anora, quickly brushing her off without permission. “I heard there were goodie bags, and I wanted to see what was in them, and I didn't think to look where I was going...”
The bumper paused for a moment, suddenly aware that they were brushing off Anora, before looking up at the older student with curiosity. Their respite allowed both them and Anora to get a good look at each other. This new person didn't seem to be much older than 10 years old- her long black hair tied into a neatly braided bun, and her chocolate brown eyes staring intensely back at Anora. Her skin was so light, that it almost seemed to glow slightly in the darkness. It likely was not helped by the dark purple formal gown she was wearing.
“Sabrina!” a new voice called out. Anora and her bumper broke their glances to see Ventus come up. Wearing an elaborate armored costume, with matching helmet, the boy looked out of breath- like he had been trying to catch up with the younger girl for miles. Which was odd in and of itself; they only had the clubroom to roam around in, after all.
“Ven!” the young girl randomly shouted in return, startling both Ephemer and Anora. “You said there were goody bags!”
The Second Year let out an exhausted sigh as he shook his head. “No, I said there weren't any goody bags. I didn't have time make them.”
“Well, why not?!”
“You ate all the candy.”
Sabrina opened her mouth to retort, but froze. “Oh yeah...” she finally decided. “I remember that now.”
Watching the duo interact made Anora shrink in mild distaste. She clung to Ephemer as if the younger student planned on kidnapping her in a blink.
“But wait!” Sabrina quickly declared as she grabbed the blonde haired boy by the wrist. “I can make it up to you! let's head to my dorm real quick; we're gonna put on better music than this!”
“We are?” was all the boy managed to say before letting out a yelp in surprise as she pulled him away. Ephemer and Anora watched the duo leave in a flurry. The young man gave a small snort at their display, but his amusement was lost when he looked over at Anora.
“You alright?” he carefully asked her, nudging her a bit so she'd ease her grip a little. “I don't think she'll bite you. I mean, Ven doesn’t have any visible bruises on him.”
Suffice to say, he earned the dark glare Anora gave him. The young man let out a nervous laugh as he threw a hand behind his head.
“I see you've met Ventus's princess?” Brain mused as he came over to the couple. The Eighth Year student wasn't dressed much different than usual, spare for the long vampire cape. In one hand he had a cup of blood red punch, and using the other he tipped his fedora to them in greeting. The only reaction he got at first was an equally confused blink from Ephemer and Anora.
“Ven's… what?” Ephemer finally questioned.
Brain gave a small snort before explaining, “Sabrina's name means princess- or, at least, that's what she keeps saying. Along with occasionally referring to herself as Princess Sabi, of course.”
“You sure it's not because she's wearing a princess costume?”
“Oh no, I'm pretty sure she's always like that.” he informed them before taking a rather long sip of punch. “Possibly the last person I'd expect to be one of Ven's friends.”
“What kind of friends do you think Ven would have?” Ephemer then wondered- a small accusatory tone was laced in his voice. He paused when he caught himself and added, “Besides us.”
“A mother figure, for one.” the older student considered. He swirled his cup as he thought over what he'd think Ventus's ideal friends would be like. “And a big brother type. You know the kind; all big and muscular, probably addicted to protein shakes. Not little miss Probably-inhales-an-absurd-amount-of-chocolate.”
Before he could stop himself, Ephemer said, “Are you sure that it's chocolate she's inhaling?” which earned him a small elbow jab from Anora. Brain didn't seem to notice it.
“No.” he admitted. “But I like to be an optimist when time comes down to it.”
“I don't like her.” Anora spoke up. It surprised everyone, including herself. Brain gave her an interested raise of his eyebrow.
“Well, I guess there's a first time for everything.” he mused with a teasing grin. “You guys are allowed to sit, you know. Skuld made the food, so make sure to save some for the rest of us. And there's a lot of drinks to go through. Oh, and Ephemer, you're on the after party clean up duty.”
“Got it.” Ephemer nodded. “Thank you for the reminder.”
Brain gave a smirk as he tipped his fedora at them once more before heading to talk to Lauriam. Ephemer and Anora decided to sit at the loveseats with Skuld and Strelitzia. The four of them went into a very long talk about everything and nothing. It started when Ephemer chastised Skuld for wearing a hospital gown- to which she said she was test subject, not a critically injured invalid, and that he needed to relax a little. It only took one glance between Anora and Strelitzia to quickly change the subject. Strelitzia had made her costume by hand, a very beautiful regency inspired dress with headdress.
After awhile, Anora politely excused herself to get a drink. The snack table had been set up against the same wall as the writing desk. A little smile was on Anora's face. This party wasn't so bad. It was just her and her friends. Because the room had been darkened, she barely saw Sabrina for most of the party. Occasionally, you'd hear the youngest girl laugh or shout for Ventus, but other than that it was rather relaxed.
Anora quietly poured herself a cup of lemonade. She happened to look up and noticed that there was a mirror on the wall. As she gave the reflection a little smile, something about the mirror seemed to change. For a moment, Anora could still see herself in the mirror- but she was older. The expression her reflection made was contemplative. Stern, almost. Her reflection turned its head as if it were talking to someone beside her. Frightened, Anora jumped away from the mirror, landing almost directly into Ephemer's arms. How he was suddenly there was beyond her, she was too surprised that her reflection moved to even react.
“Are you alright?” he worried. “Do we need to go?”
Anora quickly shook her head, pointing a quick finger at the mirror. In a shaking voice she even muttered, “The mirror, it… it had...”
Ephemer looked at her, then looked at the mirror.
“Anora, it's a dollar store frame with aluminum foil in it. It's not a real mirror.”
“It's not a…?” she repeated before looking back at it. Sure enough, he was right.
“Come sit back down,” Ephemer offered, “I'll get us drinks. We'll leave soon, promise.”
Anora recoiled a little. “But I don't want to leave.”
Ephemer look at her with a worried frown. “You're seeing things in a fake mirror that doesn't even have a reflection.” he bluntly told her. “Obviously this is too stressful for you. We'll leave after we tell Skuld good bye and-”
“I don't want to leave yet.”
For a moment, Ephemer blinked at her in bewilderment. She glared back at him with a still expression. The young man opened and closed his mouth in an attempt to say something, but nothing ever came out. Their tense moment was broken when a very loud, very trashy song started to play from the wireless speaker.
“Could someone turn that trash off?” Lauriam demanded from over the song. “There are children at this party!”
“The children are the ones who put in on!” came the mischievous response from Sabrina, which was then followed by a near maniacal laughter.
Anora let out a light shudder at the sound and tried to turn her attention back to Ephemer. But he was gone. The Dandelion leader had gone to Lauriam and Sabrina (the former looking like he was about smack the latter's mouth from talking back) in hopes to stop a fight before it started. Not that he truly needed to- Brain and Ventus were trying to defuse the situation as well. Skuld didn't bother to get up, even though she was keeping a close eye on the events. Strelitzia had gotten up, though, and was carefully making her way over to Anora.
“Should we leave?” the older girl asked the younger. “Just until things have cooled off a bit?”
But Anora shook her head- her gaze still dead set on Ephemer. “I'm not going anywhere.” she said under her breath, not meaning for Strelitzia to hear. “I can wait.”
