Headcanon; Parents

It is an established fact throughout TGCF that Feng Xin has an extremely steadfast, diligent, and loyal character. Setting aside his habit of cursing and shouting, he is very strict about maintaining propriety and seeing to it that those around him, especially Mu Qing and Xie Lian, act according to the proper prescriptions of their own social rank. In short—Feng Xin’s behavior within the scope of canon seems to be a model example of Confucian values, especially that of “ zhōng ” ( loyalty ) at work. Yet, despite him doing everything in his power to uphold proper Confucian standards in his relationships with Xie Lian, the King, the Queen, and even Jian Lan, there is one relationship that should exist and that Feng Xin should, logically, have to uphold, that remains untouched by canon: his relationship with his parents.

Both Xie Lian and Mu Qing have obvious relationships with their parents that play large parts in their motivations within the story—Mu Qing wishes to take care of his mother, Xie Lian wants to motivate his father to do better, to try, and to take care of both of them in the aftermath of the fall. Meanwhile, Feng Xin’s parents are never really mentioned. 

Given the events of Book 4, one would assume they would have to come into play at some point, right? Would it not be in character for Feng Xin to yell at Mu Qing for using his mother as an excuse for leaving when Feng Xin has a family he’s away from as well that he needs to take care of ( Jian Lan notwithstanding ) ? If they were nobles, as would be expected of a bodyguard’s family, wouldn’t it make sense for them to be on the run as well? So where are they?

This leads me to two possible conclusions: 1- ( the boring option ) Feng Xin’s family was dead by the time Book 4 rolled around, but probably not during the civil war since it never mentioned anything about Feng Xin being in mourning; or 2- ( the more interesting option ) Feng Xin did not have a relationship with his family that he valued more than his relationship with Xie Lian. It is this second interpretation that I will be using to characterize my Feng Xin.

Given the connotations of filial piety, especially taken alongside the concept of the Five Relationships, the foremost important of which being the filial relationship from father to son, this is a huge deal. However, knowing as we do, Feng Xin’s rigid upholding of filial relationships in all other aspects of his life, what else could motivate him to leave behind his own parents to care for Xie Lian and his parents?

That, I believe, lies in the principal of reciprocity within the scope of filial piety. The five relationships, as expounded by Sima Qian within, are meant to sow harmony and virtue. Similarly, the concept of filial piety relies on mutual benefit to function as the main “ ideological basis of [traditional] Chinese society ”, meaning that the respect and deference the junior in a relationship gives to the senior, must in turn be met with benevolence.

Feng Xin exercised piety throughout the book by gaining a high position by the Crown Prince’s side and doing his utmost to act as a model citizen, thus honoring his ancestors and burnishing the family’s reputation, but how was he treated in turn? That we cannot say for certain.

Even though there is an expectation that children who do not receive reciprocity should be filial regardless and explicit rebellion is considered taboo, is it unreasonable for a child who did not receive the benevolence they should have been entitled to to prioritize the person whom they swore both their faith and their loyalty to instead? Especially knowing the deep friendship shared between Feng Xin and Xie Lian that goes beyond social obligation.

After all, there also exists a precedent of Confucian scholars noting how “ zhōng ” and filial piety can come into conflict, especially during times of instability, not unlike that of the Xianle civil war.

Absently, he rubbed one of his forearms as he recalled the chill seeping though his hoodie on those late summer evenings, before Xie Lian found out, when the other boy gave him those pastries as he looked for a place to sleep that would shield him from the approaching summer storms.

He’d taken the pastry pressed into his hands and fled in confusion each time the other boy approached him—not certain if it was genuine goodwill or some kind of prank or worse. Yet, despite his misgivings, he didn’t have it in him to discard those pastries. Once he was certain he was alone, he tore into them with fervor, barely pausing to savor the sweet cherry fillings in his desire to have something filling his stomach.

“ The pastries were really good...so, uh... thanks... ” ‘ Thanks ’...the word couldn’t even begin to illustrate how grateful he was for the snack he was in that awful week he spent waiting for the break to end and hoping Xie Lian would know what to do—but Feng Xin didn’t have the words to express such a thing. ink fills the bamboo sheet. mu qing's eye follows the path of the brush decorating the strips. he is working on a character when feng xin suddenly shifts by his side. the character currently being worked on is small, contains a lot of strokes, shows off its dynamism.

in his periphery, mu qing catches feng xin coming closer for a cuddle. usually, he'd ignore him, but let him do as he wished. yet, he ignores the character instead. places his brush down halfway & turns to feng xin. he opens his arms & allows him to fall into them.

his attention, for today, belongs to him.

In moments like these, calm and quiet with just the two of them sitting in peace with one another, Feng Xin was content being patient. He intended only to rest his chin upon Mu Qing’s shoulder and wait until he finished whatever he was writing to draw him into a hug, happy in their languid ease, but Mu Qing surprised him.

Delight swelled in his chest as Mu Qing invited him into his embrace. Tucking his face under the other's chin and wrapping his arms around that narrow waist, Feng Xin felt as if he were floating. It was almost as if Mu Qing was the only thing keeping him tethered here.

“ Mu Qing... ” he sighed, his voice light and syrupy, even as the sound of it was muffled against his companion’s breastbone. “ Love you... ”
