My dog, Rosco, died suddenly last Thursday afternoon. We're devastated and heartbroken. He was barely middle-aged, so I thought we had more time. I drew and wrote this to help bring myself closure, and I'm happy with how it turned out.

Where did Ryan even find a flail?

In this Scene

A bit of fanart of @temiree’s characters Nes Irwin the kangaroo and Ryan the raccoon getting up to some…interesting shenanigans at my character Leo King the lion’s MMA gym—much to poor NES’s chagrin.

Nes finally convinced Ryan to try boxing, so while he was in town for a fight he brought Ryan along to Leo’s gym to give it a try. Unfortunately, Ryan’s not quite keen on the idea of getting punched, but neither is he about to tuck tail and run. So how does he protect himself?

Well, as only a raccoon who chugs a bottle of maple syrup on Canada Day can :)

Behind the Scenes

I’d come up with the idea this idea for this scene while back and really, really wanted to draw it, but was feeling too perfectionistic about it to actually attempt it. I wanted the picture to turn out exactly as I imagined, do justice to a couple of really fun characters, and be funny. But I reminded myself that perfection isn’t the goal—I draw art for fun, and if that means my art has room to improve, so be it. That shouldn’t stop me from trying to draw what I want now—how else will I improve and stay motivated? In the end, though, I think I did manage to capture what I was imagining, and I hope you all enjoy it too.

And @temiree, keep up the good work—you are continuously an inspiration for many character artists, and Little Runt is an entertaining comic.

Currently Reading: About to start volume 12 in my run through the TMNT IDW Collections. Volume 11 had Triceraton POV in it so I enjoyed that immensely. I continue to enjoy the creative ways they integrate elements from previous TMNT incarnations into their ongoing one. :]

Last Song: The Beast Beneath the Waves... love love love Nolan’s lutren sharkhunter sea shanty, I am still obsessed sorry.

Currently Watching: My Adventures With Superman, and recently started What We Do in the Shadows! Enjoying both so far!

Last movie: Uuuh. It’s actually been a hot minute and I honestly can’t remember. Surely it wasn’t the Netflix Monster Hunter movie...? :S At any rate, I’m trying to push my butt out of the house to watch one of several new movies and haven’t been successful yet.

Currently working on: mostly Western Deep stuff, less fun comic art and more “necessary book-making logistics” type stuff. Also a smattering of fan projects of varying secrecy.

Current Obsession: my brain has actually broken and is attempting to be obsessed with like 4-5 different things at once, which means I’ve actually been way too fractured lately to like... turn around and make anything about it. I can also feel myself self-censoring a bit because I feel so unhinged and random with all this stuff, heheh

Felt like drawing some fanart of @temiree ‘s characters Temiree and Markus. Tem has been drawing Markus with a falchion lately, so I decided to redesign Markus’s sword slightly to make it a messer, a German single-edged sword constructed like a giant knife (hence the name). Messers were extremely popular weapons with all social classes in late medieval/Renaissance Germany (1400’s-1500’s) and were an important weapon in the period fencing traditions, so naturally I had to draw Tem and Markus sparring in the style of medieval fencing master Hans Talhoffer, who includes several beautiful (and some gruesome) pictures of messer fencing techniques in his manuscript.

I traced one of Talhoffer’s plates to ensure that the poses were accurate, even keeping the spacing as close as I could. Since many period fencing books were illustrated, it’s always fun for me as both a character artist and a HEMA fencer to use tracings of fencing plates to construct my scenes, so I know that they’re more accurate to the reality of a sword fight.

Also, since Temiree and Markus both live in the Redwall universe (last I heard), I decided to draw them in a castle courtyard with, well, red walls! I’ve never read the Redwall books, so I have no idea what Redwall Abby looks like, but I imagine that this is one of the corners of that famous bastion of goodness and care.

Also, @temiree I hope you enjoy seeing your characters as much as I enjoyed drawing them—keep inspiring other artists!

Little Runt

It’s a graphic novel series by Temiree. 

Nestle Irwin is a young athlete who has taken up MMA fighting to follow in his late father’s footsteps. He wants to become the best there is just like his father was, but constantly struggles with years of self-loathing and guilt over his fears of living in failure since childhood. It doesn’t become any easier when he learns that his father wasn’t as perfect or the best like he was led to believe in growing up. 

It’s basically your typical internal struggles/personal dilemma storyline, so it achieves what it sets out to be thematically and characteristically. The only problem is that it feels like the story opened up without any prologue or proper introduction to the casts and conflict, so certain character relations and issues are going to feel like they popped up out of nowhere.

Oh jesus christ. I don’t think I need to say anything. What is with those chins?
