A moment of unexpected distress catches them off guard, and both soon find out it’s much easier to catch feelings than fish.

2022 Evaluation of my Fics

I was tagged by the nicest people @beardyboyzx and @thinlinez to answer a bunch of fic questions. Here goes nothing:

6. Work I’m most proud of (and why):

I like to think it's the latest fic I wrote (I'm Weaker Without You), but I genuinely can't choose. Maybe each story of mine has different reasons attached for my being proud of them. But yeah, even if they suck, I'm proud of all of my fics <3 but I admit I have a very soft spot for My Light and Fix You. They were the most thought-provoking or had the most character development of sorts and I love that.

7. Work I’m least proud of (and why):

Hahaha on a normal day, I can't bring myself to read any of my works because I hate what I've written and can see it could've been so much better than what I've done, so again, I can't choose (yes I'm a terrible decision maker).

8. Share or describe a favourite review you received:

@thinlinez literally made my year by commenting on every chapter of I'm Weaker Without You and letting me know what they think! I was so nervous about this fic because I wrote just over 30k words in a little over 3 weeks and my brain was so fried, I was worried people would find my story pretentious or "trying too hard". Each comment from them was a godsend. :')

And I received comments from @beardyboyzx and @cigsandchampagnethat helped me get better and have faith in my writing, especially when I was at my lowest.

9. A time when writing was really, really hard:

I think writing in general has been really hard for me, especially fanfiction writing because 1) I've never done any story writing before this, and 2) I didn't think I could write any romance. But this month has been the hardest for me. To write 2 stories at the same time with life happening was just wild. I feel so drained out physically and mentally.

10. A scene or character you wrote that surprised you:

I think it would be the first smut scene I ever wrote. I didn't think I had it in me, but I managed to, even if it was really lame.

11. A favourite excerpt of your writing:

It's not a favourite per se, but I love the tenderness of it:

“Where are you lost, jaan?” Hands wrap around Liam’s frame as he’s gently brought back to the present. He feels a soft kiss on his temple as he takes a deep breath in.

He turns back around to see Zayn smiling at him. He smilingly lifts his head up, Zayn leaning down to kiss him on the mouth.

“Nowhere, mon amour. Was thinking back to the times when I should’ve realised I’m not into girls.” Liam laughs.

Zayn makes a sound. “It’s okay, you were so young. You couldn’t have known, especially because you were around such homophobic people.”

Liam sighs. “I know it was bad, but honestly? I wouldn’t change anything about it. Because all of that led me to you, my dear husband. I would go through all of that and more, if it means I’m with you.” Zayn just kisses him.

Every first with Zayn has been one blissful moment after another. They’ve been through so much together, and he knows it only made them stronger, and more certain in their love for each other.

Zayn opened his studio and handed Liam his heart when he showed Liam his art for the first time. Liam hasn’t dropped it since.

12. How did you grow as a writer this year:

I just grew haha!! I began writing, and that for me is the biggest growth. I know I have soooo much to learn in the world of writing, but I got over my fear to begin, and that in itself is a major growth for me :)

13. How do you hope to grow next year:

I just want to keep writing and have faith that I'm doing well. I just want to improve and get better in any way I can, because writing has been my best outlet and escape.

14. Who was your greatest positive influence this year as a writer (could be another writer or beta or cheerleader or muse etc etc):

Comments from @thinlinez, and my friends @beardyboyzxand @cigsandchampagne. Every author in this fandom is a godsend, and I aspire to be half as amazing as all of you.

15. Anything from your real life show up in your writing this year:

A bunch actually. The Mane Man was based on me going to a salon (minus all the romance of it) and Fix You is very very very personal.

16. Any new wisdom you can share with other writers:

I'm a baby writer, I'm the last person to be able to give any advice!! But one thing I would say is - WRITE. Write everything you can think of, and read even more than that. Read every genre, every book that you can get your hands on, and talk to fellow writers. You'll learn SO MUCH.

17. Any projects you’re looking forward to starting (or finishing) in the new year:

I have a few ideas in mind, but nothing really concrete. I am considering taking part in more fic fests, so that it motivates me to write plot driven fics instead of just one-shots.

18. Tag some writers whose answers you’d like to read.

Week 1: Scramble [Zayn & Louis, 3k, teen and up]

“Would you like your eggs cooked, scrambled or fertilised tomorrow morning?”

Zayn looks at the stranger thoughtfully. “You know,” he says, “I don't think that pick up line works when we're both male.”

Or: the fic where Louis tries to cheer up a stranger in a bar.

Week 2: Particular [Larry, 4k, teen and up]

Taking a sip from his water, Louis shifts the mic a little closer to his face, presses the hotkey on his keyboard to continue the recording. “I recently heard someone say there’s a piece of you in how I dress, and it got me thinking. We all subconsciously pick up habits from our loved ones. Whether it’s a particular turn of phrase, or something that we got into because someone we care about loved it. I’ve asked this question on my Instagram – shutupandlistenpodcast – and we’ve had a few wonderful replies to that, so I’ll be reading some of those out shortly, but first I wanted to talk about the people that have become part of me, simply by being part of my life.”

Week 3: Swing [Larry, 5k, teen and up]

Louis swallows, looking at Harry, who grins at him as though nothing’s wrong. He’s leaning against the door of a wardrobe, his long hair having lost some of its curls due to the amount of times he’s run his fingers through it. Louis is still where he was the moment the door got closed behind them, all but pressed up against the wood, trying to keep as much distance between him and Harry as possible.

His heart stutters in his chest as he looks up at his best friend. He’s known Harry since he was barely out of diapers, and Harry gets him in a way that few people ever have – or have tried to. He knows him, to the point where sometimes Louis worries that he’s able to read his mind.

Or: It's Seven minutes in Heaven, but Louis sort of feels like he's ended up in Hell instead when he's forced into a small bedroom with his childhood best friend slash long time crush.

Week 4: Describe [Ziam, 3,5k, mature]

It’s not like his descent into addiction has been anything less than extremely public. It’s not like people won’t have expected it. His fans certainly have, he knows that much. He knows that they might even be happy that he’s here. Liam wishes that he could say he did it because of them. Because of the people that have followed his career, made his career. In a way, maybe he is. Because he wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for them, if he’d simply been Liam Payne of Wolverhampton, as opposed to Liam Payne, 1/5th of One Direction.

But he’s not here for them.

Week 5: Check [Larry, 10k, mature]

He’s just finished making a drink for another customer when a literal angel walks towards him. It’s not an exaggeration to say that the crowd almost seems to part for him, and for a moment Louis wonders if there’s a literal halo around him or if it’s just the lights in the bar, and then he notices the way the man trips over nothing, and the illusion wanes somewhat.

He’s still fucking gorgeous though, even on bambi legs, and Louis resists the urge to paste on his tried-and-ever-undefeated flirty smile. Instead he just grins, appraising this newest customer and trying to remain professional. He might be demiromantic, or whatever the fuck Zayn had called it, but that doesn’t mean he can’t appreciate this man’s good looks. After all, his romantic identity had nothing to do with his sexual identity, much as people assumed it did. For a brief moment Louis laments his decision to stop sleeping with people, especially when the boy pops a dimple when he smiles back at him.

Or: Louis is a bartender who doesn't take drink orders, but just makes drinks based on what he thinks his customers will like. Harry is just another customer. Or is he?

Fanfic Faves - 2022

My 2022 favorites. Of course, I had 50+ on my fave list, and I had to narrow down to 15. I cut out fics that were rereads, and fics that I've mentioned elsewhere in lists. I removed double mentions of authors. It was still hard to get it to a manageable list. But here it is. My top 15 for 2022.

These aren't all published in 2022, but were all read by me this year. For some perspective, my total fic count for the year is 271, almost 20 millions words read. I've read some really good fics that didn't make this list.

Louis is an angel who is just a little too bad to be good, Harry is a demon who is just a little too good to be bad, and they're both a little too in love to be impartial when angels and demons go to war.

My thoughts: Exceptional. No extreme smut. Soul mates. Louis angel. Harry demon. Save the world. Love each other across Millennium. Superbly written.

In which, Louis and Harry meet as best men for their best friends' wedding... well... sort of. Or, the one where Harry's just moved back from New York and Louis doesn't believe in romance. Or, I guess... the one where Zayn and Liam are getting married.

My Thoughts: This was the year BananaHeathen finished this WIP, so I can add it to my faves list! I LOVE this sweet friends to lovers slow burn. Louis is a romance agent, Harry is a photog getting over a serious break up. Great OT5 found family. Exceptionally written and long, but you never want it to end.

Or the fic where Harry spirals out of control, the band breaks up, and then he shows back up, five years later.

My Thoughts: a new favorite. Canon to a point, except it's Harry as an alcoholic (Trigger warning) who leaves the band and doesn't return for five years. Slow burn as Louis learns to forgive him, but it's lovely and there's a small side plot of Ziam.

4. Lightning Strikes Twice by dinosaursmate - https://archiveofourown.org/works/12950415/chapters/29601396

Louis slipped his hand onto Harry’s thigh, snaking his fingers up and inwards. “I’m a big fan. You’re so talented, and I have to admit that I actually fancy you a bit.” “Yeah?” Harry reached up to push Louis’ fringe out of his eyes. “Well, you know, I like to try and be accommodating to my fans.” “You’re quite well known for that,” Louis whispered as he turned his head some more, their mouths an inch apart. “So I hear.” Rock star Harry Styles was nineteen when he met Louis, a groupie with a huge heart that Harry couldn’t quite shake from his mind. Fate granted him a second chance at the age of sixty, his washed up and lonely existence being transformed by a widower with a bookshop.

My Thoughts: I loved this one. Super sexy but also really sweet. Spans a lifetime. Older characters are written really well.

5. Torn on the Platform by frecklebomb - https://archiveofourown.org/works/6203497

AU where harry and louis are strangers but they always get the same train to work in the morning and one day harry falls asleep on louis' shoulder. louis wants to be annoyed because harry just broke a least seven rules of tube conduct but he looks so soft and peaceful that he just lets him sleep and wakes him ever so carefully when it’s his stop. it happens again and again until it becomes a regular thing where louis will let harry snooze and then gently nudge him awake, hand him the cup of coffee he took from him so it wouldn't slip and spill everywhere and send him off with a “have fun at work, love” and after the tenth time harry isn't even embarrassed any more.

My Thoughts: This is a PODFIC - I listened in the car. Such a good light story read by the author, who has a lovely narration voice. Loved everything about it.

The most interesting case in Liam and Niall's careers falls directly into their laps, courtesy of an epic fuck-up of one Harry Styles, partner to the almost-infamous drug dealer Louis Tomlinson. The investigation yields an unexpected yet satisfactory outcome for Liam and Niall. For Harry and Louis, however, things are far more complicated.

My Thoughts: I really liked this crime drama; it's told from a variety of different perspectives, and it all comes together at the end.

AU: In the midst of his second world tour, Louis Tomlinson receives the devastating news that his former bandmate, Harry Styles, is in critical condition after an unfortunate accident. Fresh with the loss of his mother and his sister, Louis’ world darkens once more as he flies out to California, preparing for the worst. There, Louis is faced with the ghost of his past, realizing the hand he played in the band’s division. As time goes on, Harry’s condition becomes dire, and his only chances of survival forces Louis to participate in a makeshift, illegal drug trial orchestrated by a dubious neuroscientist.

My Thoughts: science fiction, love the angst and happy ending. Canon divergent. Louis has to undertake an experimental procedure to save Harry in his dreams.

A FBI - Medium AU

My Thoughts: crime drama, supernatural, x-files-esque. GREAT characters. Great plot.

Cara burst onto the fanfic scene this year with a great list of crime drama/supernatural fics. If you like this genre, go read all of them.

Harry and Louis grew up together in Lake County, Harry with his mom and stepdad in a tiny cottage on Edward’s Lake and Louis in his family’s farmhouse a few minutes down the road. But after high school, Louis stuck around and Harry did not; Harry went to Chicago where he found a boyfriend and couple of college degrees. Six years later, Harry ends up back in Edwardsville for the summer and he and Louis fall into old patterns and discover new ones.

My Thoughts: TW for some internal and external homophobia. But this has nice character development exploring small town Larry and 1 D.

Rather than spend the summer working at their desks, Louis and Harry are given the opportunity to crisscross the country together in a tiny camper, filming their adventures for a YouTube series. It soon becomes obvious to their viewers that there’s something more than friendship between them. Eventually, they figure it out.

My Thoughts: super cute. Road Trip Larry. Lots of state parks, travel. Louis has a crush and of course they end up together.

11. Promise Your Whispers are mine by lightswoodmagic - https://archiveofourown.org/works/30297759/chapters/74675502

Harry’s the head chef at Azoff’s Catering, and he loves his job; the opportunity has always been more than he could dream of and he’s proud of the food he creates. Until he meets Louis, an event coordinator rising through the ranks with his own company, and who reminds him of the dreams he once had for his own career. While their easy friendship initially thrives in an industry known for chaos and betrayal, they soon discover they both have their secrets, and maybe it’s too late for either of them to try to find happiness outside of their work. Especially when they realise that their happiness might rely on each other.

My Thoughts: I liked this one a lot--it would make a good Hallmark channel movie--a bit of angst. Some internalized homophobia. Good OT5. Side of Ziam and a glimpse of Shiall.

My Thoughts: Really liked this baseball fic. Good solid OT5, great character development. Love story feels believable as does the angst and past-trauma.

They fight like nobody’s business, both of them too stubborn to pull their punches when they’re arguing, and it used to get them in trouble, but they always make up. Adrenaline makes Louis loose-lipped, and they both know it. He tightens his arms around Harry’s neck, buries his face in his hair. “I missed you,” he confesses, quiet. “Doesn’t feel the same up there by myself.”

My Thoughts: really enjoyed, slow burn, canon compliant. Louis needs support on his first solo tour and Harry comes along to help him.

These are my favorites from the year of 2021 that have one way or another followed me, fics that I find myself going back to several times. There were so many great works this year and this list does not include every fic I've liked! Carry on writing you beautiful souls, you keep this fandom alive.

Keep in mind I only started reading fics for this fandom at the end of last year. So this year I had so many older works to catch up on as well, and even though I tried to keep up with the new ones too, there's only so much one can do.

When Harry goes to a friend's movie night, the last thing she expects is to meet an enigmatic and handsome stranger who sweeps her off her feet. Louis might just think she’s the most wonderful thing alive.

I loved everything about this. I'm so in love with Harry, she's so sweet in this. Louis is so gentle with her too. I loved their dynamic. It's a short one but contains so many emotions in such a little time. Please give this one a read if you haven't already!

He can't imagine that anyone-- especially not someone like Louis --would ever really want to be with him.

Always a fan of authors who manage to write realistically and devastatingly beautifully about the day to day lives of someone with chronic illnesses. These are real issues real people deal with and seeing that kind of representation in fanfics is amazing. Loved this work and everything in it, especially how understanding and sweet Louis was of Harry's situation.

Absoloutely adored this one. Dirty talk can often come off so cringy (that's a me problem though, so please never ever ever stop writing dirty talk), but I found myself enjoying this a lot. I mean I was red-faced half the time during all the phone sex but hey, it's a sign it works then, eh? Loved the ending too. The awkwardness when they met each other was endearing.

While Harry’s friends are all getting engaged or married, he’s nowhere near walking down the aisle to his own happily ever after.

The night before his best friend’s wedding, Harry falls into bed with a silver haired stranger who makes him wonder what his own forever might look like.

Everything this author puts out is always a fave but this one stood out the most. Not just because I'm a sucker for silver fox Louis. At this age and my situation, I relate to Harry so much it's almost painful. Loved the pacing. And I felt the sexual tension in my core in the first scenes at the bar.

Indian Summer by docklands/@hershelsue (30K, E)

Harry runs a smoothie shop, which also happens to be an ever-moving caravan. He spends one week in each location and drives straight to the next, always eager for adventure. It isn't until his van breaks down and he needs to call for a mechanic that he starts to ponder his life choices. Louis, the said mechanic, is an anchor in Harry's wild sea, but his hard metal might be too much for Harry's unpredictable antics.

So many things that made this fic stick to me are spoilers and I don't want to spoil it. Let's just say this author never disappoints. This fic had that summer feeling, and something I would describe as melancholy and the bless (or a curse) of a naive heart.

Harry stretches out like Venus with her lover, growing sleepy in the late afternoon light with a baby growing inside her. Perhaps not literally, not physically. Not exactly.

This is such a beautiful piece of literature. The baby fever and the yearning for the 'impossible' is so palpable it's painful. I could feel all the raw emotions in my core. Despite the heavy topic, there's still sweetness to balance it out, which makes it a perfect fic for me.

Harry’s new in town and just wants to spend his nights on the rooftop gazing at the stars. He gets far more than he bargained for.

I just love the pacing in this one and both characters have so much depth. There's perfect amount of angst to balance the precious sweetness. Harry's gender was so wonderfully explored too. Plus points for sex talk! I will always, always root for sex talk because people don't just magically know how to make the other tremble. It's a journey in itself.

The stars and two amused boys are playing cupid, and there are one too many coded love letters and a duck plushie that smells like home.

The amount of cracks I got in my heart while reading this... It was both so heartbreaking and sweet I couldn't help but cry. So beautifully written in every way. Non-traditional abo for the win, too.

The Money Mark by brightgolden/@brightgolden (52K, E)

Where Louis is Harry’s first sugar daddy who dumped him over text and their paths cross, seven years later.

Each of my favorite omegaverse tropes together (as in nesting, scenting and knotting) plus age difference and oh the pining? Sign me the fuck up! Loved the dynamic on this one, A/B/O always gives such good ingredients for angst and different kind of smut, and this author delivers perfectly.

This is, quite simply, one of the most beautifully written pieces I've ever read. Writing is so rich and descriptive. And the smut? Somehow manages to be both tender and wonderfully dirty in the best way possible.

I need help finding a fic: H moves back to Ldn from the US I think, and he's Li's best man so he meets L who's Z's best man (ziam wedding) and since he doesn't have a place there yet he ends up living in N's spare room, who's Z and L's best friend. I didn't read much before stepping down momentarily from the fandom last year but it was so wonderful! L didn't believe in love and H was a hopeless romantic with a broken heart and they try so hard not to get involved, so it won't get messy with their friends, for all of five minutes. What else. H was a photographer, L worked in like books? (romance!!) Z was a painter and the most eccentric ever, N was L's coworker and Li was a millionaire who had like a foundation for charity or something. I need to know what happened. I really don't know how I lost it but I tried looking it up and nothing's coming through so here I am. It was a WIP at the time (2021) if it helps, but I can't remember any title/name/tags so I would appreciate if you could post this. It was the nicest thing, gave me very much TIF vibes?? good times 😂 (less "juvenile" but so good) so u understand why I need to get it back, the friendships and wholesomeness will fix my heart haha ❤️

My Future in Fic

Yeah, so, the 100k fic that I’ve been working on for the past six months? The one that was going to be uploaded to AO3 last week? Yeah, it’s accidentally getting published...

Where do I start?

I suppose with a massive thank you to anyone who’s clicked on any of my fics over these past two years. I’ve said it before, but I’ll say it again. I never ever thought about writing as a career. I’ve never written anything prior to my Harry Potter AU Compartment 451. I didn’t even take an English class in undergrad or grad school. I genuinely just had an idea for a fic I wanted to read and since no one had written it, I had to do so myself. Since then, I’ve written every single day for 2 years. I left my job in the entertainment industry, got accepted to one of the best creative writing programs in the world on a scholarship, and now one of my stories is being considered at Harper Collins. Yes, the Harper Collins. It’s the longest shot in the world, but for legal reasons I was not allowed to upload the fic version on any website prior to submission. Even if they don’t pick it up, I’ve been advised to continue to shop it around to agents.

What I can do, however, is share the premise.

If you’ve been following my tumblr and watching my tags - I SEE YOU ALL OUT THERE - then you’ll know that this fic was meant to have Zayn with his signature undercut hairstyle and one more little thing...

Someone sent me an ask a while back about what this fic was supposed to be about. I believe I said something about it being an adaptation fic, but not from a film/tv show/other piece of literature, from a song. This next fic was meant to be an adaptation of the song Younger by Ruel. Later on, it also took shape with the help of Remember by Liam and a few others that you can find here.

The miniature summary is as follows:

When his father suddenly passes, twenty-nine-year-old Liam Payne is brought back to the Sydney suburbs where he grew up. He doesn’t plan on seeing his childhood best friend, Zayn Malik, at the burial service. They haven’t spoken since going from brothers to strangers one fateful day fifteen years prior. But Zayn puts an end to this when he approaches Liam after the burial, offering his condolences and asking if Liam can help his archaeological research team with photographing their newest project. The unexpected closeness forces each man to wade through uneasy emotions. For Liam, a mixture of grief, lost identity, and confusion over why he’s willing to interact with the one person he swore he’d never forgive. And for Zayn, a tidal wave of anxiety that comes from finally facing a part of himself he’s always chosen to deny. When We Were Younger is a story heavily rooted in blurred identities and exploring what loss can look like in two different scenarios: death and friendship.

For obvious reasons, their names will be changed. Liam, to Hutton. Zayn, to Cairo (his ethnicity will also be changed to Egyptian). As you can see, it was meant to be my big ‘enemies to lovers’ fic. Technically, it’s ‘best friends to enemies to lovers’, but you know.

Right, so what does this mean for me going forward?

I still have so much inspiration when it comes to writing Zayn and Liam as characters. I don’t plan on putting a complete stop to writing them, but with my career taking this large of a turn, I do have to prioritise my time. That said, as of now, I can’t afford to write long-form fic any longer.

Soon, I’ll be starting a PhD program where I’ll be writing another full-length novel for mass publication. For fun, here’s a little insight on the two ideas that I’ll be pitching:

1. Underground boxer (loosely based off Liam) falls in love with arms gang leader (loosely based off Zayn). Throughout their love story, the latter has to outrun the psychological trauma his father (the leader of Zayn’s rival gang) still throws his way.

2. Cold War AU. Paris, circa 1950/51. Ambassador’s son (loosely based off Liam) befriends new student (loosely based off Zayn) at the international school. Paris is a ticking time bomb; war is about to break out at literally any second. The two clearly have feelings for each other, but can’t act on them because homosexuality in the 1950s...yikes. When war does break out, the two are separated, and as Liam’s character goes out to find Zayn’s, he learns a secret of his that changes everything.

Whichever I don’t write for the PhD will be the novel I write following it.

In the meantime, I’m going to continue to write (and edit) like crazy. Ever since I randomly wrote C451, there hasn't been a day that’s gone by where I haven't written something. It may have only been a paragraph or two, but never zero. This is how you get better. This is the equivalent of going out and shooting free throws for 30 minutes a day. You have to put in the work in order to get better. I'm very lucky that I'm incredibly self-disciplined and I've been able to crank out as many stories as I have over the past 2 years.

That said, I’ll be writing shorter little oneshots. I have several ideas that I’ve been sitting on, but haven’t ever thought to write because I HATE writing short stories. Little ideas that don't have huge plotline/climax potential, but that I want to just see on paper, I'll probably end up writing. If I had to guess, I'd say they'll come out to around 10-15k. Also, sequels? Prequels? Haha, you never know...

I’ve also got a series called “Sleep Drabbles” that are, yes, you guessed it, a series of drabbles based around one theme: sleep. I also have a few scenes that I want to write which are based on ziam’s kids, not actually ziam themselves. If there’s enough demand for that, I can upload those too, but they’re quite niche, so I don’t think the general fandom would be very interested.

As far as frequency for all of this, I have no idea. I’ve always done things at my own pace and written stories that I want to write, for myself. That won’t ever change, so I don’t want to commit to one drabble a week or one short-length fic per month. It takes me weeks (months for this last fic) to research and interview the necessary people to get character arcs correct/believable. I love that part of writing, and so if I have a little story that I want to write that may only be 10k but takes me ages to put together how I want, then so be it. I will always be around to answer asks/messages and please, continue to tag me in your writing tag posts! But please, no prompts.

So, that’s my future with fic.

i think i’ve read this like a dozen times and it’s still. so. good. probably the first pirate fic i read and i love it so much! the dynamic between them is awesome to read.

Seeing Blind

Stranger Stars by shaylea @sunshineandhisrainbows

This fic is one of my favorite fics ever. The story follows non-famous ot5 on an African safari and an epic journey of the heart. The description of the world is breathtaking and absorbing. The slow burn of an immediate connection is perfectly tantalizing and bittersweet. I don’t think I can even properly express how much I loved this. It’s over 200k words so you can and will get lost in it.

Ever Since I Tried Your Way by @flowercrownfemme

Harry leaves his bride and his life behind on his wedding day, and when Louis offers him a ride and a place to stay on his farm, it’s fate. The tender, breathless, aching joy of embracing your real self is so beautifully articulated in this fic. Farmer Louis and gender exploring Harry are amazing together in their cozy little world. Baby animals are the cherry on top.

This World’s Ashes by @sunshineandthemoonlight

The writing in this is lyrical and powerful. Readers are transported into a post-apocalyptic world where Harry and his dog are surviving just fine until he encounters another human and invites him to sleep the night in his shelter. He starts to want more than just survival. I betaed this fic, and I waited for every chapter with baited breath. It was only posted a few days before the new year, but it’s been a big and bright part of my 2020.

Buckle in for a hilarious ride with this one. Harry is the new guy in a boring office job, but just being around his coworker Louis is absolutely worth the drudgery. This fic also features a whole cast of familiar and wonderful characters. It’s a real gem.

Let’s Talk About Making Love by istajmaal

I found this fic again in 2020, and I still love it. Niall makes Harry dial a phone sex line and gets bossed around a little bit by Louis. Harry maybe calls back…a lot. The dynamic of kink discovery is really well written, but so is the way their relationship evolves and deepens. Sweet, sexy, and absolutely satisfying.

Knocked Me Sideways by @ferryboatpeak

Even if you normally don’t read other pairings than Larry, give this one a shot. I am absolutely obsessed with this verse where Jack Lowden has a life-changing one night stand with Harry. This non-famous au with mpreg Harry is so unlike anything else, in a good way. The story is told from Jack’s perspective, and his emotionally stunted but well-intentioned narrative made my heart flutter, break, and soar.

My English Love Affair by @isthatyoularry

This is a fandom classic apparently, but I had never read it! Famous/non famous au where Louis sleeps with the indie rockstar Harry Styles more than a few times and maybe gets a song written about him, but it’s no big deal. The characters really pull you in and the mixture of sweet, sexy, funny, and angsty is just right.

Have a Nice Trip by @kingsofeverything

This funny, sexy, and adorable short fic follows roommates trying shrooms in quarantine and maybe being a bit more candid than planned. I’ve read this at least five times. It never fails to make me smile.

Harry grabs a basket and a couple bags of chips from the first endcap. That will be his apology gift, he figures. Like, “Oh I’m so sorry I accidentally jinxed you, but I fixed it! Have some chips!” Yeah, he is going to need more than chips.

He groans and scrubs at his face with his free hand. God he really fucked up this time. Right there in the middle of the aisle is a big bin of stuffed animals. Maybe he can bury himself in there and just—

“Good evening.”

Harry whirls around searching for the source of the voice. At the end of the aisle is an employee peering at him over a cart of boxes. “Hi,” Harry manages to say.

“How can I help you, tonight?” the man asks.

Harry laughs wryly. “Not sure you can.” Not sure there’s any good way out of jinxing your cute new neighbor.

The worker hums in response but doesn’t keep moving. Harry shuffles his feet and glances at the shelves, wishing he would stop looking at him. Would sour candies help with the apology? No, probably not.

“Yeah, probably not.”

Eleanor laughs as she blows out her smoke. “Sorry, forgot you hate smoking.” He must have cringed, damn it. She grinds her fag out on the bottom of her shoe. “Unless it’s Louis, of course.”

Harry laughs self-consciously. “Yeah, maybe.” Probably. Definitely, if he’s honest. His brain swirls for a minute, groping for the reason, for why that might be, before he closes his eyes and lets himself focus on the rocking of the swing instead.

When he opens his eyes again, Eleanor is looking at him with the tiniest knowing smirk. Logically, he knows that she can’t see much in the night, but somehow he feels exposed. She leans back and pushes their swing higher. “You know… when I met my soulmate, I didn’t realize right away.”

counting the steps between us by zarah5 @zarah5 (24k, friends to lovers, pining, so much pining, also camping) this fic is a gem. i absolutely love the dynamic between them and how easily they fall into step with each other. louis is kinda a dick to harry but they end up happy, so, who cares.

say that you can see me (i’ll speak up i swear) by coffeelouis (20k, college au, liberal arts college, photographer harry, soccer/football player louis tomlinson) harry is an oblivious idiot and louis is the fool pining over him. zayn is not bothered, except for when he is. wonderful fic.

larry heartbreak by coinmaisy (47k, cheating harry, angst with a happy ending, it gets worse before it gets better, infedility, heartbroken louis tomlinson, implied/referenced drug use, alcohol) when i first read the summary i was like “what is 47k going to do to me?” huge mistake i promise. this was so exhausting to read and it literally felt like my partner had cheated on me. you really feel for the characters. kind of unconventional with the way they deal with it but beautiful nevertheless.

joke’s on our parents by larrycaring @mystupidamours (alternate universe- high school, louis has a twin named carla, coming out, sort of, closeted character) short and sweet, an extremely adorable read. i wish it didn’t end here! i’d kill for parents like that no joke

Hey everybody! One of my secret santas asked me what my favorite fics are so I decided to make a full blown rec post just for them. These are a little all over the place so I hope you can find something that you enjoy here! ☁️✨

Louis Tomlinson, one-time Formula 1 World Champion, is looking forward to the 2013 season. He��s got Zayn in his garage and Liam in his ear, he’s got Cowell Racing backing him despite former indiscretions, he’s got experience and the best race car out there. Not to mention he’s the only racer they have, after Oliver dropped out late last year.

It hasn’t occurred to him that Oliver would have to be replaced by February. That is, until he finds himself at a party celebrating Harry Styles leaving Ferrari for Cowell. Harry hotshot Styles, who broke a record last year and is probably looking to make a big splash. Harry Styles, who is talented and somewhat intimidating. Harry Styles, who left Ferrari for reasons unknown and seems kind of lonely and harmless in person. Lonely, harmless, hot as fuck. Whatever.

The first thing Louis does is take him under his wing. From there it’s nine months of slow-burning romance, the past catching up to them, turning into the human puppy pile that is OT5 and a lot of feelings until, of course, reaching the finish line.

“Lucky for you it takes quite a lot to actually insult me,” Louis said taking one step closer. Too close. Too close.

Marcel met Louis’ eyes. Those blue eyes that reminded Marcel of poetry instead of science, lyrics instead of formulas. They were so pretty he wanted to drown in them.
