Still crawling thru bits of SMTV and while Im not really feeling it it is making me daydream about what Id really love from an SMT game, mainline or otherwise, and honestly Id love to see SMT tackle something to the tune of the 1970s student riots across the far east. Something with a tone between Devilman and Ride back, with a combat system like Ogre Battle or maybe the army mode in old Suikoden, but with a look like Dynasty Warriors or Kessen. You doing your SMT protag run around a Tokyo on upheaval, with protestors barricading off college campuses and erecting and expanding an autonomous stronghold while waging a turf war with riot police. But then full on warring states style drama of conflicting wannabe warlords, with your summoned demons as the new samurai warrior caste. Draw on things like the French Revolution and the Reign of Terror, MacArthur's occupation of postwar Japan, the Opium Wars in China, the Crusades, the career of T.E.Lawrence, Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness, Japan's Manchurian puppetstate, etc... And really dig into the heart of thr conflict being the nature of inviting in this foreign element, and question... is it really this classic occult apocalypse where the demons are invading the human realm, or is it mankind that has unwittingly becoming an occupying force of hell itself?
