TK loves Carlos, and wants their relationship to work out. Before they can recapture even a semblance of the bliss they shared, Carlos needs to fix his mistake and properly introduce TK to his family. Until then... Carlos deserves at least some punishment. He only hopes Buck will forgive him, for involving him in his and Carlos's first big fight as a couple.

Only it's not Buck's forgiveness he'll need.

He’s wary. He and TK are supposed to be enjoying a delicious meal outside at a nearby park, sun high in the sky, bright but not too cruel, as they sit together on a thin, yellow blanket, and Carlos cannot enjoy any of this beautiful date because a tiny voice in the back of his mind warns him that TK’s silence is a cover for something more sinister. His boyfriend’s smile, aimed at his phone as it has been since they arrived, means trouble. The small, continuous giggles that eke free sound like alarms. Giggles offered with every bite, where he’d type a short message and then set his phone down; only to grab it halfway through its jingling ringtone – TK never usually keeps that on. Carlos remembered him complaining how he hates ringtones, prefers having his phone vibrate. Why is it on now? And why is he texting while they’re on a date? And why does his laughter make Carlos cringe?

“Who are you texting?” he asks, finally, Carlos pushing the plastic container with his half-finished sandwich to the side.

TK glances up from his phone. “No one.”

“No one?”

“Just a friend,” TK says, pinning Carlos with a strange expression that squeezes his heart. It makes the sweat pricking his temples relocate and journey down, rolling towards his chin. Carlos wipes at his face as TK adds, “seriously, you don’t have to worry.”

It’s the way he said ‘you’ that does Carlos in. That has him dredging up what he already considered resolved since before they sat down. Discussed, at length, over the phone, with Carlos apologizing repeatedly. TK assured him they were good. “I thought we were good?”

TK sighs, “We are good.” Then, he mumbles, “As good as any two friends can be.”

Carlos’s frown deepens, mouth resembling a severe gash carved into his face. “I knew it!” Carlos cries, pointing at him. “You’re still mad at me.”

“I never said I wasn’t!”

“You said it was settled –“

“Because it is,” TK insists, a heavy glare drawing all breath out of Carlos’s chest. The façade he wore for their date has been pulled away, and Carlos sees exactly how distressed TK remained after he introduced him to his parents as his ‘friend’. Even with Carlos promising that he would remedy the situation soon, gather his boyfriend and family together and explain the truth of his romantic life, TK clings tight to the pain Carlos caused by letting fear sway his choice, both at the farmer’s market and when he let TK walk out of his home, relationship dangling from a fraying cord. It frays ever closer to breaking. “It’s settled until you work up the nerve to have that dinner you were talking about.”

Carlos splutters, “That’s not – you know, with the pandemic how hard it’s…”

His excuses further irritate TK, who retreats into his phone. He texts someone else. Perhaps the same person he’s been texting this entire time. “Then it’s settled.”

“If it’s so settled,” Carlos asks, “why even bother agreeing to our date today?” He gestures at their unfinished meals, probably cold and stale. If they weren’t, it’s not like Carlos feels like eating anymore.

TK stops texting, smirking at Carlos. Usually, it riles Carlos up in that he wants to kiss it off of him. Right now, Carlos swallows the urge to shove his boyfriend onto his ass. “A date?” TK asks, words languid and breezy, spaced out by palpable sarcasm. “Why would you think this was a date,” he continues, phone tapping against his chin, “we are just friends after all…”

Anger and disappointment converge violently inside Carlos, fighting for release. Neither can, as his vibrating phone pulls his focus from TK. He opens the message on autopilot, confused since it’s from TK. Confusion then drops into the cesspool of his emotions, like Mentos in Coke, and Carlos explodes.

“Why did you send me this?” he demands, showing TK a picture he sent to Carlos of himself. A picture they took, together, when visiting a lake one weekend long ago during the summer. A picture taken after they spent the entire afternoon swimming, bathing suits forgotten on the pier. A picture where TK’s chiseled physique was on display, skin dazzling as fading sunlight turned water droplets into diamonds, and TK’s sunglasses rested low on his nose as he smiled to the side where Carlos was. Was. As in not anymore. Only his arm, slung around his boyfriend’s shoulder, remained. Saved by being impossible to crop out. “Well?” Carlos asks again.

TK sighs, “Oh, I must have sent that by mistake.”

“You wanted to send me something else?”

“No,” TK clarifies, “I sent that to you by mistake. It was supposed to go to Buck, see?” TK shows Carlos his message thread, with the picture he sent Carlos, timestamped, showing he forwarded it to Buck first, then Carlos.

“…Buck.”

“Yeah, Buck,” TK continues, leaving his texts and diving into his photo album. He selects a group shot of the 126, plus a few extra members. He zooms closer on one face, Buck’s, enough that Carlos can distinguish the two birthmark spots above his eyebrows. “I’m sure I told you about him.”

“You did,” Carlos nods. He tears his gaze from Buck’s smile, fuming. “The firefighter who flirted with you.”

“I mean, he also helped me save my dad,” TK says, “but, yeah… he also flirted with me.” TK lowers his phone, chuckling, “We’ve just been chatting back and forth – as friends do – when I realized… y’know, I told him I wasn’t interested, because I had this really awesome boyfriend who I love, but since that’s not the case anymore, we’re only friends apparetly, I figured I might as well shoot my shot. Find out if he’s still interested. Maybe once quarantine is done, I can take some time off and… see what Los Angeles has to offer.” The eyebrow wiggle was completely unnecessary. TK communicated exactly what of Los Angeles he intends to see, regardless of how his eyebrows moved.

He’s better than this. Carlos knows what TK is doing. What the picture, and its delivery, was supposed to accomplish. What it’s succeeding at. He can win this, simply by ignoring TK’s teasing.

Except.

“You are not going to Los Angeles.” Carlos scowls, “Not without me. And especially not if Buck is gonna be there.”

TK scoffs, “What are you, my boyfriend?”

“…Yes!”

“Says who?” he asks, “Your parents?”

They’re outside. In public, surrounded by people who keep their distance. Unfortunately, their voices carry wide enough they draw a sizeable crowd. Carlos doesn’t notice until TK storms off and leaves him with the blanket, the abandoned food, and their audience.

Carlos blushes, hiding behind his hands. He wishes he never fumbled back then, in the farmer’s market. He also, briefly, wishes he and Buck switched places. At least then TK would be treating him to risqué pictures. At least Carlos would be having a good time, if he were Buck. He’d be receiving sexy photos from a certified dreamboat instead of suffering because of his own mistakes.

Buck stumbles over his words, stuttering, rushing out his explanation to a stone-faced Eddie. “Seriously,” he says, “I don’t – I don’t know why TK sent me that picture of him! It’s not like I asked! One second we’re talking about movies and the next thing I know – shirtless TK!”

“Yeah, I know,” Eddie huffs, arms folded across his chest, “I saw.”

He shouldn’t have. If Buck hadn’t left his phone on the table to help Bobby in the kitchen. If he didn’t hear his phone beep with an arriving message, almost vibrating off the table from it. If Eddie, along with Hen and Chim, weren’t climbing the stairs at the moment, and if he ignored Buck’s plea to hand him his phone. To punch in the code – which he knew, of course Eddie knew – since Buck was wrist deep in a turkey’s hole.

Buck washed his hands immediately, drying them on his pants as he chased Eddie the few feet towards the couch.

“So,” Eddie continues, “you and TK…”

He and TK? “We’re friends,” he says, repeating himself after Eddie’s disbelieving stare. “Okay, I mean – he did turn me down once, when we were leaving Texas. But he said he had a boyfriend –“

“He turned you down?” Eddie asks, “You flirted with him?”

“No!” Buck shrugs, running his hand over his forehead, frowning at the sweat that pooled there. “Well, I didn’t think I was. But he did? And – and he left before I could say anything, but I didn’t think it mattered since he, y’know, had a boyfriend!” He stomps his foot, irritation bubbling from the pit of his stomach and out his mouth. “Besides! Why does it matter if he sends me pictures?” Nice pictures. Distracting pictures that made Buck question exactly why TK misunderstanding his friendliness was a problem. “Why are you so angry?”

“Because… because…” Eddie looks past Buck, at the peanut gallery assembled by the kitchen. Hen and Chimney watching with interest while Bobby pretends cooking a turkey involves his whole focus. None of the seem keen to jump in and help. “Because… you…” Suddenly, Eddie stands. Buck recoils, stepping backwards. “You know what,” Eddie says, digging into his pocket, “I’m telling Marjan to unfollow you on Instagram.”

“What?”

“And!” he yells, phone free and on, “I’m telling her to block you!”

“What? No – Eddie, no! Don’t!” Buck follows his friend, pleading, “C’mon, she hasn’t even liked any of my photos yet… Eddie… Eddie!”

Eddie ignores him, furiously typing the end of Buck’s most famous connection online. In his haste, Buck forgets his phone on the counter. Eddie takes precedence over his phone.

Later, Buck will return to it. He will respond to TK’s picture, sending a tidal wave of texts at the Texan firefighter ranging between the immense trouble that picture landed him in and how TK can repay him by convincing Marjan to follow him again.

But that’s later. Now Buck slams his fist against the firetruck, yelling for Eddie to unlock the door.

Eddie doesn’t.

A/N: A proposal request for el Presidente by @masterlistforimagines! I love writing fluff and turning Bish into a sap, so I hope you enjoy! 🥰💍

You and Bishop had known each other for what felt like your entire lives. You met when you were teenagers when you had been on the brink of getting into a fight with some guy who wouldn’t leave you alone. You had been toe-to-toe with him, pushing him down on the sidewalk. There hadn’t been any fear or hesitation in your voice or movements, but Bishop still stopped what he was doing to make sure you were safe. After the man had left, he walked over to make sure that you were alright. You were still so rattled and angry that you blew him off, not wanting to deal with some other guy now that you had gotten rid of the first one. But, if anyone asked Bishop, that was the exact moment that he started falling in love with you—right as you left him in the dust and stormed off.

He was persistent enough to get your attention, but not enough to be creepy, which was a very fine line to walk. You let him in, and for years he was your best friend. You knew everything there was to know about him, and he knew everything about you as well. The older you both got, the more involved he got with the club, it actually made him keep you closer. You kept him grounded.

There wasn’t a specific moment where he asked you to be his girlfriend—it all just sort of fell into place. No one inside or outside of the club could pretend to be surprised when you started showing up together everywhere, Bishop’s arm draped protectively around your shoulder to keep you close.

You had moved into Bishop’s house with him three years ago, and all you could think was why hadn’t you done it sooner. You instantly felt right at home, and he made sure that you never would feel uncomfortable or out of place. The second you brought in your first moving box, it wasn’t his anymore, it belonged to the both of you.

You were lying on the opposite end of the couch form him, your legs entwined in the middle. Your eyes were fixed on the movie that you were watching but you could feel him looking at you. The past few weeks you had caught him looking at you differently. It wasn’t bad, but you could sense that something had changed. He had had a lot going on with the club so you figured that maybe his mind was just somewhere else.

“Obispo? You okay?” you smiled at him.

He nodded, placing his hand on your leg with a smile, “I’m good.”

You let that be the end of the conversation. But you did maneuver yourself to the other end of the couch so you were curled up against him. You felt him sigh contentedly underneath you. He wrapped his arm around your waist as he placed a kiss on top of your head. For the remainder of the film, he couldn’t take his eyes off of you. Every time you glanced up at him, he would simply smile at you and press a kiss to your forehead.

What you didn’t know, was that for the last two weeks, a ring had been burning a hole in Bishop’s pocket. He didn’t have a solid plan to propose to you just yet. He figured that when the time was right, he would know. He had no doubts about you saying yes—the two of you had spoken often about creating a life together. But still, he wanted the moment to be just right.

There had been one close call of you stumbling upon it. Everyone was at the clubhouse, a typical Friday night party. You were situated on his lap on the couch while he was talking with the guys. You went to reach into the pocket of his kutte to grab the pack of cigarettes he usually kept there when he swatted your hand away. He was never like that and it caught you off-guard.

“What? I just wanted a smoke.” confusion was all over your face.

He cleared his throat, feeling bad at his overreaction but he couldn’t tell you why, “Sorry, Amor,” he reached into his other pocket and pulled out the pack of cigarettes, giving you one and lighting it for you.

The incident had since faded from your memory but not from his. He made the calculated decision to be much better at hiding the ring when he was keeping it on him. He knew that he had no intention of proposing to you in front of the club, or any people for that matter. But he couldn’t leave it at home when he wasn’t there in case you stumbled upon it accidentally. Every scenario ever was running through his mind all the time.

You unknowingly snapped him back to the present when you gently nudged him to get his attention. He looked down at you with a smile, “Hmm?”

“You have an early morning tomorrow?” you asked.

He shook his head, “No, I’m all yours tonight and tomorrow, Querida. Why? What’s on your mind?”

“Wanna go for a ride?” you smiled. He’d seemed so inside his head lately, you figured a nice night-ride would be a good way to help him clear his head. Plus, it had been a while since the two of you went for a ride just because.

“Now?” he chuckled, sitting upright, “I’d love to. It’s been too long, huh?”

You nodded, excitedly getting up off the couch, “I’m gonna go grab a sweatshirt and my boots. Be right back,” you kissed him softly on the lips before taking off to the other end of the house.

He chuckled to himself as he watched you run off as excited as the first time he had ever offered to bring you for a ride. All these years later and the excitement still hadn’t worn off for you. It hadn’t for him, either. He still loved the feeling of your arms wrapped tight around him, the way the heat from you would warm up his entire back even through his kutte and shirt.

He grabbed his kutte and draped it over his shoulders, patting the pocket to reassure himself that the ring was still inside. He sighed with relief when he felt that it was. He pulled his boots on and patiently waited for you by the door. You came out, smiling and giddy as ever. He didn’t even bother asking if you were ready because he already knew the answer.

“Where to?” he asked as both of you clipped on your helmets.

“Somewhere with no people and lots of stars,” you smiled at him before tucking a couple beers into the bag on the side of his bike.

He chuckled and nodded, knowing a few places the two of you could disappear to for a couple hours to get away from it all. You climbed up onto his bike with ease and wrapped your arms around his waist, pulling yourself as close to him as you possibly could. You took a deep breath, reveling in the comfort of it all as he started up his bike and pulled out of the driveway.

The two of you took the long way out of town, loving to see all the minimal lights of the shops and bars as you went through town. You were cozied up against Bishop thinking that you could spend the whole night like that.

Eventually you rolled to a stop, way out away from town and all of the people in it. Bishop got off the bike and helped you to do the same. You grabbed the beers as Bishop rolled out the blanket for the two of you to lay on. He was sitting upright and he situated his legs so that you could sit between them, your back pressed against his chest. You rested your head back, the leather of his kutte feeling cold at first.

He rested one hand on your thigh, “This was a good idea.”

You gazed up at him, “Yea?”

He nodded before taking a sip of his beer, “We needed this, didn’t we?”

You nodded but didn’t say anything else as you took a sip of your beer and returned your attention to the sky above you. You loved the comfortable silence that you and Bishop learned to share over the years. He had never been much of a chatterbox, and being with him had taught you that you didn’t always have to be speaking to let someone know what you’re feeling. You learned to communicate in the quiet moments with him.

He ran his fingers through your hair, staring at you as you stared up at the sky. He remembered the first few times the two of you took a ride out to stargaze. He hadn’t expected you to know so much about stars and constellations. He listened intently as you pointed things out, loving to hear you talk about things you were passionate about.

You brought him back to the present moment, “You know, if you look closely,” you pointed off into the distance, “You can see Venus tonight.”

“Yea?” he smiled as he looked up at the sky.

“Mmhm,” you continued to point, “You see that one that looks brighter than the rest?” you looked up and when he nodded you continued, “It’s not a star or a satellite—that’s Venus! Beautiful, right?”

“Not as beautiful as you,” he kissed your temple.

The two of you fell back into silence. You finished your beer and set the bottle to the side, resting peacefully against him. You felt him shift slightly beneath you. You glanced up and saw him trying his hardest to reach into his kutte without disturbing you. You shifted to the side a little to make it easier for him to reach whatever it was that he was grabbing for.

He wrapped his arms around your waist and rested his chin on top of your head. You melted into him, loving when he held you like that. You reached up and traced your fingers down the side of his face, feeling him leaning slightly into your touch.

“Y/N?”

“Mhm?” you looked up at him.

“Can I talk to you about something?”

You tried to move so you could sit across from him facing him, but he wrapped his arms tighter around you to keep you in place. “Of course,” he hadn’t seemed angry lately, but you knew that he seemed different. Hopefully you would find out why.

“I’ve been thinking for a while,” he placed one hand over yours, “about us.”

“Whatcha been thinking?” your nerves were starting to eat away at you, but you were trying to keep it light.

“That I love you so much, that you’re the most beautiful woman I’ve ever seen, that you’ve made my life so much better from the day that you walked into it,” there were tears starting to gather at the corners of his eyes, as he turned one of your hands over so your palm was facing up, “And that I would love, more than anything in the world, to make you my wife,” he pressed the ring gently into the palm of your hand.

You glanced down into your hand, and tears immediately began trickling down your cheeks. You closed your hand around the ring and turned, tackling Bishop to the ground in a hug and covering his entire face with kisses. You finally pulled away, looking him in the eyes, “Nothing would make me happier.”

Bishop laid there, looking up at you as you thumbed the tears off of his cheeks. He took your hand in his, uncurling your fingers so that he could slide the ring on. It fit perfectly and both of you were looking at your hand thinking about the life that was ahead of you. You couldn’t help the fact that happy tears were still spilling down your face. Bishop smiled as he continued to wipe them away.

“I love you so much, Obispo,” you chuckled, looking at him, “We’re really doing this, huh?”

He smiled and nodded, pulling you down into a kiss, “We really are.”

“How long have you been planning this?” your eyes strayed back to the ring on your finger.

“Not long,” he was beaming, “Only since I asked you if you were alright and you told me to fuck off because the last thing you needed was more men in your life.”

You laughed, your cheeks turning dark as you shook your head at the memory. “That really sealed the deal for you, didn’t it?”

He chuckled, kissing your knuckles, “What can I say? I like a woman who isn’t afraid to put me in my place.”

“Yea, well,” you laughed, “You’ve got a whole lifetime of that ahead of you, Obispo.”

He smiled, “Can’t wait.”

The Casagrandes Reviews: Operation Dad

In my first look at The Casagrandes, We meet Ronnie Anne and Bobby’s dad Arturo as Ronnie tries to get him to start working in the city to be closer to them.. and when a genuine honest appeal dosen’t work, shenanigans will have to do. Dad stuff under the cut.

This is one i’ve had in the works since my labor day catchup binge of shows, but kept getting pushed back either due to regular coverage or specifically timed things like the bi visalblity day review of “What Was Missing. And with Halloween next month, my time to cover this is running out a bit and I feel it’s a great place to start covering this show so, pitter patter. The Casagrandes didn’t really hook me in at first: It did have two things going for it: An intresting premise A blended family coming together, with our heroine and her big bro being fish out of water in a new family situation. Wheras with the Loud House Lincoln, and by extension most of his sisters, is used to how his house runs, knows the score and knows how to manuvre around it, Ronnie Anne was being dropped into a new situation, with people she KNEW, but only likely from seeing them breifly. It’s one thing to see your cousin once or twice a year, as I did with mine at that age, it’s another to live with them. It had a lot of potential. The other thing was Bobby Santiago, Ronnie Anne’s brother, and one of my faviorite characters across both shows, an endlessly nice guy who while suffering from a terminal case of dumbass, is utterly likeable, helped by his VA Carlos PenaVega, with the spinoff and i’ts build up only fleshing him out more by giving him his job at the Mercado, and showing he has serious buisness acumen in addition to his many other talents.

But what made me wary was the lead: Ronnie Anne didn’t get the best intro on the loud house. You know this, I know this. We all know this. No sense beating around the bush: She was a bully, who had a crush on lincoln and masked it by pummeling him. And this was seen as okay by the show which isn’t as suprising in hindsight as Chris Savino clearly has messed up views about women and harassment, and is thankfully no longer part of this. She did get slightly better once she actually showed up, getting genuine chemstiry with Lincoln and being shown underneath the bully exteriror was a pretty nice kid who shared his intress. Granted it wasn’t perfect as the show madei t clear he was terrified of her, but it did at least also make it clear he no longer had a reason to be, and while she’d prank her boyfriend, or assits his sister during her dark time once a year in doing it, and if your wondering if i’m ever going to watch or cover the april fools episodes .. yeah i’m just waiting you know.. for april fools.

My point is it was kinda mixed and their solution was to soften her up a bit but also act like she and LIncoln weren’t intrested in each other all of a sudden instead of you know, dealing with her past actions and having her make up for them. It was sloppy is what i’m saying and the character while not bad wasn’t in the best positoin to tkae the reigns of her own show. They did add some intresting depth with the move though, showing that Ronnie Anne and Bobby were often on their own, and that Maria moved them to the casagrande household simply because she felt her daughter would be happier NOT having to be the strong one or take care of herself all the time and actually have someone look out for her instead. It was a good emotional reason for hte move and both casagrandes showed up ocasoinally, mostly Bobbi whose still with Lori to this day as seen in the season 5 premiere. It was an okay foundatoin but it would depend on what they did with her character.. and i’m glad to say.. they made it work. The show still has rough edges, mostly having the same problem ducktales and the loud house itself had during season 1 of juggling such a large cast: Most of them outside of Ronnie Anen and Bobby have only gotten 1 episode, and even then CJ feels underutlized despite being amazing, while the adults outside the grandparents feel underutlized. Buuut the show is funny, intresting, has good pacing and unlike the loud house, having already learned that lesson, while Ronnie Anne does get more episodes than the rest of the family, it does feel more like an ensemble show and the focus on her feels less like the show not knowing what it has and more like easing the viewers into the rest of the cast by using her as a viewpoint. Ronnie herself is better, the bully aspects gone. She can still take care of herself, and is still fairly indpentent and clever, but she’s got a sharp sense of humor and a clear love of her family and the fish out of water aspect I hoped for, while not used a ton, still comes up in intresting ways. Overall i’d say the show is off to a good start.. and it has Melissa Joan Heart and Ken Jeong as a married couple and let’s Ken play a diffrent role for once: A dorky, kind dad instaed of any degree of lunatic. That being said given his character her’s last name is Chang, I can’t help but think this and community are in the same universe and that the Changs have just had to put up with whatever insane phase Senor Chang was going througha t the time every time he visted. I mean i’d love to hear Sid tell ronnie anne the time her uncle came over in a napoleon outfit and revaled he’d taken over his community college with the help of a bunch of children. But i’m getting off topic, I gots an episdoe to cover and out of the ones I watched this felt both like a great re-introduction into the cast and was easily one fo the best with a great emotional core and great jokes and LOTS to dig into. So i’ve jawjacked enough, pitter pater. Again!

It’s with this episode we properly meet Arturo Santiago, Ronnie Anne and Bobby’s father, Maria’s ex, and owner of one hell of a beard. Ronnie mentioned him back in friended aka the pilot because fuck that airing structure but not the time or place for that moving on.

We see he video chats his daughter once a day, though today she made hte mistake of doing so on a crowded subway while with her best friend and future wife Sid. NOW we can talk about Sid. Sid was introduced in Friended! over on the loud houd house as part of that mini arc I keep yelling about and will again and again. Sid is Ronnie Anne’s clyde: A best friend whose there as her sidekick, emotoinal support and resident goofus, being a bit of a weirdo and given i’m a giant ass weirdo, you can see why I like her/want to keep her safe from the nightmare that is at last half this fandom. Plus she and ronnie anne are adorable together and have more chemstiry than she and lincoln did.. thoguh the two do have OT3 energy together in his one episode, but that’s for another time.

Anyways as Sid helps her rangle wifi by them by doing the mecha shiva we soon find out Arturo is coming home! Home lord he’s been off in Peru for too longggg. Point is Ronnie Anne is excited, Bobby is excited, everyone’s excited except for Hector who hates him.. and honestly I can see why the contrast. For everyone else, Arturo is a charming, friendly guy who genuinely loves his kids and only is away from them because he has a lot of important work to do and even with that is still an active part of their lives. Buuuut Hector likely sees it diffrently and is likely homing in more on the fact Arturo is barely there in person for his kids and left Maria to do all the raising them by herself, with her own demanding job. It’s not a black and white situation is what i’m saying and.. I genuinely love that. It’s a complex thing to deal with: A parent who isn’t there for his kids but it’s hard to say if he’s being selfish or not. He’s not david from roseanne doing this so he can feel good about not wanting to deal with being a father or the death of his brother, Arturo genuinely just wants to help those who need him, even if he has to sacrifice a lot to do it. Ronnie Anne naturally wants him to move here though and convince him during his visit, and her plan nicely shows off the duality of her charcter: She’s clever and can easily think things through, as his originzation has it’s home office in Great Lakes City so he could still help those in need, just more from the organizational end, as well as i’m assuming GLC’s own homeless and needy. But she also has an 11 year olds understading of complex issues and thus thinks the easiest way to convince him is to take him on a fun daddy daughter day that will make him love the city. Bobby is less optimistic about the plan though.. and that’s because he’s been through this with Arturo already. Granted his job for him was at weenier on a stick because it’s bobby, the boy is a peach of a human being but has the plkanning skills and common sense of a basset hound on qualudes. He just sugest she enjoy the time. And this says a lot about BOBBY too: He’s used to his dad being out of his life, he’s probably been gone for most of it and while he loves him, he’s had ot get used to the fact he’s probably never going to be regularly in his life and while he understands why his sister’s trying this he wants to spare her the pain he went through. It’s interactions like this that to me show the series at it’s best and what it could be: deeper character interactions that really let the characters and voice cast shine, that still mix well with the usual nonsense. Arturo arrives and everyone loves him.. and again it’s easy to see why: he’s kind, friendly and to the kids, he’s their cool uncle who lives in another country and as someone with one of those, It does feel neat. Hell he was my cool uncle when he just lived in chicago or seattle, but somehow he had to top those by moving to fricking ireland. So I get where they come from and really relate to it.. I mean I met mine in high school, my family tree is complicated, but still. So while everyone but Hector is happily remeetinmg their uncle Maria shows up. And it’s awkward, the two not knowing how to greet each other, but it’s very obvious Maria and Arturo are on good terms, it’s just hard when theres so much history there. Speaking of Maria let’s talk about her since this is one of her only scene’s this episode. Maria is one of my faviorites. She isn’t used a ton, but this is more excusable than it is with the Casagrande parents, as the whole point of Maria uprooting her kids to Great Lakes City was to give them company and someone to take care of them while Maria worked the long and varied hours of being a nurse. She’s a good parent, who just picked a rough career, and made the hard decision to uproot her kids, not for her sake, as it can’t be easy living with both your elderly parents, your sister and her husband not to mention 5 kids, a giant adorable pupper and an obnoxious parrot, but so they’d be happy.. which given Ronnie Anne went from having no friends and largely having to be the rock in the house, to having a sizeable friend group plus her cousins, as well as generally being happy while Bobby went from bouncing from job to job to running the family buisness and planning to expand it when he gets older. She’s a good gentle person who still makes time for her kids, and I wish we saw more of her with her spotlight episode, which was about Ronnie Anne trying to spend more time with her, being one of my faviorites so far. I also like the fact that for once in a cartoon a parent with a time sink of a career isn’t demonized for trying to put food on the table and rather than just quit or have a mean boss or the usual cliches, Maria just found a way her kids wouldn’t be alone. She’s awesome. Ronnie Anne first tries showing him how great the city is with home cooking and a warm bed, but the first while nice is something he still gets, and the latter in a nice touch is just.. too soft for him. Ronnie meant well, but understadably he’s just not used to it and makes a cot under the stars instead.. he’s not trying to be ungreatful, he’s just sued to it.

Anyways Ronnie indeed takes him on a montage, with some cab headbonks beacause why use an uber that’s cheeper and safer huh? Anyways our father and daughter do have a montage, and hector gets beaten up by a luchadore because this promotion apparently dosen’t get not to attack the crowd. They really need to stop booking that guy.

Ending on our article image, which is really sweet and a real beautiful shot, Ronnie Anne finally gets to her Ronnie Plan. First Arturo cycles through two diffrent assumptions about what she’s asking him about. He first thinks she’s about to tell him about a special boy or girl in his life, his exact words. He backspaces to include that. She says no which.. I guess okay you have other things in mind but you can’t put off him meeting Sid forever. That aside I do think it’s a good indication Ronnie Anne might be bi, and both her parents just easily accepted it which is great. I could be reading too much into this, and I probably am, but I’ve thought I was before on nickeodeon and look how legend of korra ended.

The next is just hilarious as Arturo tries to let her down gently that he’s not getting back with maria which Ronnie Anne agrees with and was not remotely her point, but I do like as it shows their well and truly done, and it’s nice to see that sort of dynamic with a divorced couple in fiction where it’s not because of lingering sexual tension or anything, just that their apart but have kids to think about and presumibly the split was amicable if again still awkward. Finally Ronnie asks him.. but he gently refuses, since the people he helped need him as much as he wants to stay.. but part of what makes Arturo likeable, especially since he’s in the REALLY throny situation of not being in his kid’s lives in person despite having the opprountiy now, is that he genuinely tries to compromoise, saying he’ll try to up the calls to two a day, and he’ll visit more often. Ronnie Anne sadly and half heartdly says it’s fine and walks off. So Ronnie Anne vents to that girlfriend she apparently dosen’t have that he cares more about her patients than him and Sid sidgests that part of that is simple: He dosen’t feel she and bobby need him since, as I pointed out earlier, their doing better than ever. So Ronnie Anne intitates a second Ronnie Plan: to convince him she’s a troubled youth and get him to stay and reasssmbles her cousins to help. Before we move onto this plan that’s totally a good idea and not a borderline Zach Morris evil scheme, let’s talk about those cousins real quick. Quick fire: CJ is really great, a sweet kid and I wish they’d use him more and generally do nto get why they don’t, Carlota is fine but not all that defined at this point but Alexa PenaVega tries.. and why yes it is kinda weird Carlos PenaVega’s wife and the former star of spy kids is playing his sister. And Carl.. I don’t likes him. I just don’t. He did give me a really good episode, which we’ll be covering next month, but he’s just a little asshole with out the charm of fellow little asshole Louie Duck, who alsos cams people but actually gets consqeunces more often.

That quickfire done Carl does a forgery which depsite me being eh on him, clearly, is a funny bit, to make Ronnie Anne look like she’s failing, but that fails as you’d expect when he can help her with that from Peru. So it’s on to the actual plan: Which really boils down to this.

I mean.. that’s essentially the plan convince him she’s running with a dangerous crowd and is breaking bad, dressing up in punk clothes and making a scene at breakfast. She also gets a really neat new haircut, similar to luna’s but spiky which.. why isn’t this her normal hair? and why dosen’t she at least keep the cool leather jacket? I always get annoyed when a character’s temporary costume change is even better than their default design and htey fail to realize it but whatever. IT starts to work a little but clearly a breakfast tauntrum won’t be enough so Ronnie Anne enlists Sid.. who is frightend,d osen’t recognize her and dosen’t want to get shoved into a locker. .. who hurt you.. tell me.. I have a box to deliver. Just let me pop a quick H on there real quick.

Anyways, once Sid realizes “Oh that’s not a bully come to shove me in a locker that’s just my girlfriend in the middle of a zack morris grade elabroate manipulative scheme”, which happens once a week their fine, she comes up with one last plan: Have her friends, who are neat but need more filling out, dress up like punks bullying her friend sameer. This plan.. makes no sense. For one she was already a bully back home.. granted it was because she liked the kid, which no just no, but it’s heavily implied she did the same to the rest of the lincrew too. .which aside from Rusty isn’t a good look. I mean his face is punchable and he mocked hte idea of them being together despite next season hitting on Lincoln’s sisters, there’s a 1:1 chance he hit on her and she shoved him in a locker as is the natural response to anyone getting asked out by that goober. No matter how hard the show tries to pretend that didn’t happen it did. If her bullying kids didn’t get him to move home back in royal woods it won’t work now.

So they had behind the fish market for their plan, Arturo is directed there.. and sees through it. I mean she’s probably sent him pictures of her friends, he knows who they are and no amount of costumes is going to fix that. I mean you really only changed Nikki’s hair. Why not just have a dance fight. i’m legitly asking dance fights are rad and this reminds me of the venture bros episode where hank, to impress his date, has billy and white pretend to be a street gang to impress his date. Just do that for sid instead of trying to gaslight your dad into staying. But no while he pulls her into the car, Arturo knows this was a stunt and asks why. When Ronnie Anne tearfully reveals she just wanted him to stay.. he hugs his child.. and agrees. He realizes that if she’s willing to go to these lengths to get him to stay, she must REALLY miss her papa. So he plans to call the office to transfer. But then while helping her dad unpack, Ronnie Anne finds something and we get another emotional scene: Ronnie Anne finds the letters he got from the various kids he’s helped, and is moved to tears. Props to Izabella Alvarez for her performance here as she reads the letter and realizes just what her dad’s work does ,and why it means so much to him. He truly helps those who need it and she decides she can’t take that awy from it: Sure her dad won’t be around.. but other kids need her dad more. She has a big family, she misses her dad.. but she can live without her dad. They need a doctor.

So Arutro heads out with a tearful goodbye and Ronnie Anne leaves him a scrapbook of their time together. We then cut to the Santiago sibs playing cards, and being sad about their dad and all that.. when Arturo calls.. and then shows up in person. He took the Headquarters job after all, though a close friend of his we met earlier in the episode but I ddin’t mention will be taking over in Peru, and from earlier clearly wanted to get back out in the field, so it all works out. And it’s a nice character moment; Arturo realizes while his work is important, and as mentioned he does make sure a compient replacment will continue it.. his family can be too and it’s okay to think of himself and them for once. As I said he’ll still be able to help just in a diffrent way and there are probably needy kids who need him here too, if not in the same ways obviously as a doctors without borders type project. So eveyrone shares a group hug and even Hector bursts into tears. And Maria comes in wondering what she missed whiel Sergio asks who wants to tell her. oh sergio.. why didn’t you stay away when you ran away in a future episode. Final Thoughts: Not much more to say. It’s a well done episode with high emotinal stakes, great acting and some great jokes I didn’t get to, and while the plot of “Make absent parent stay by pretending things are bad’ isn’t new, it’s done well enough here. Overall just a really good episode that shows what this show can do and why it’s unique family setup makes for intresting stories a lot of shows can’t tell, and validates this spinoffs existnace. The episode also really fleshes out Ronnie Anne’s character, and givne Arutro’s been gone since the divorce if not longer, it’s resonable to supsect her earlier bullying might have been lashing out at her parents divorce. It’s just good stuff. Keep an eye peeeld to this blog for my regular loud house and ducktales coverage , and some more casagrandes this october. ANd until then, Go Team Venture!

"I WOULD DEFINITELY CALL THAT A WINDFALL" "I thought you'd appreciate hearing from one of your clients about something positive during the pandemic! I wondered "Windfall, what windfall?!?" I had a couple of weeks with 50% less workload and consequently 50% less income in my work as a contractor, and that was after PPP funds had dried up. . . BUT! Within just a couple of weeks, applications were being accepted again, and I was approved. That same week, a paycheck that had still been missed after I'd asked about it three times and not receiving payment for an entire month was finally sent to me. An insurance check that I'd been waiting on since late January was finally resolved and the lost check reissued and received. I was able to file for unemployment hassle-free because of the reduction in work, and then my work started picking back up after only 2 weeks of the drop in work. I would definitely call that a windfall and a result of the Luck Switches bonus call with that purchase. Fast forward to today when I received a call about monies that I didn't even realize I had through a county program for a business startup. Evidently, there was a balance remaining that was actually 4x the amount shown on paper, and I should've spent it by last year, but the program director phoned and let me know he was granting extra time to do that and to "go shopping" for my business! Wow. I've never felt pressured to spend money before! What I notice most after having attended the Abundance/Supercharging Abundance, Luck, Breakthrough/Plandemic Switches, and I'm sure even more so after next week's Work/Life Switches call, is that I'm not worried. I truly feel more and more fortunate and abundant in my blessings, monetary and otherwise. Music is a dynamic force and we, as the ultimate architects of musical expression, have very little control over how it affects us. The most fascinating phenomenon, then, is to witness the progressive evolution of a group of individuals contributing to the greater musical conversation of our time. Take BRUME, for instance, a Bay Area three-piece who just released their sophomore effort, 'Rooster' (2017). It’s an impressive slab of gritty, colorful doom, and it delivers on every paradigm of what we call doom metal.

Rooster by Brume

Rooster’s primary achievement is that it sounds much bigger than anything the band has done before. It’s bold, heavy, and beautiful, and the songwriting is tighter and stronger than anything from their 2015 debut, Donkey. By focusing more on interesting guitar work and sounder song structures, the trio has avoided sounding like another Windhand doom-pop clone, which isn’t so easy to do if your band features a female vocalist. From their latest work, Brume draw comparisons to the likes of Messa or to some degree Mammoth Weed Wizard Bastard.

Indeed, not experimenting enough was the major drawback of Donkey, which relied on singer and bassist Susie McMullen’s soaring falsetto to carry the band through five rather similar tracks. Rooster is superior in that it works more with the band’s collective talents to create staggering moments that incorporate dynamics and powerful guitar progressions. Songs like opener "Grit and Pearls," for instance, progress by sculpting dynamics that carry the listener from stentorian peaks to quiet, calm depths. These transitions establish intimate moments with the listener, imparting Rooster with a richness that sustains the whole record.

Perhaps "Reckon" captures Rooster’s variety the best: Jamie McCathie’s guitar--clean and coated with some effects--sounds out a bluesy passage that supports McMullen’s swaggering vocal lead. It’s a calm introduction that proceeds to obliterate the listener as Jordan Perkins-Lewis joins McCathie with his drums to create a wall of sound. Towards the halfway point of the song, McMullen belts out a tribal-esque chant that soars majestically atop McCathie’s High on Fire-inspired riffing and Perkins-Lewis’ sustaining ride cymbal.

To bring some balance to Rooster, Brume included a softer song called "Welter," an acoustic track that combines piano from Billy Anderson himself to accompany McMullen’s stunning vocals. “The villain plays the victim,” sings McMullen. “Do you use pity as your weapon?” The melody and lyrics come from a place of hurt; the pain and upheaval radiate from McMullen’s crooning voice as soft piano chords shimmer in the offing. It’s a moment of vulnerability and nakedness, but it cuts deep.

The album ends on "Tradewind," a slow paced dirge that shifts from somber plodding to a cathartic release towards the final minutes of the song. “Open wounds, healing truth, healing you. Open wounds, open, open you, healing truth,” McMullen sings. The cleansing nature of the lyrics in conjunction with the guitar’s unbridled drone creates yet another moment of unashamed tenderness that shows us a side of doom metal we’re only accustomed to getting in small doses from bands like Pallbearer, Warning, or even Type O Negative ("Love You to Death" is one of the sappiest songs in metal, but we love it all the same). More of this, please.

The daringness to pioneer new sonic territory is what makes Rooster such a success. It’s not groundbreaking, but it’s not terribly derivative, either. For their second LP, the future is looking bright for Brume.

A Lively Conversation With Brume

Brume recently finished up a few UK tour dates with Gurt. You also got to play Desertfest at The Underworld alongside Bongzilla and Inter Arma, among others. How was that whole experience? I read that Body Count was forever "your" band.

Susie McMullan (vocals, bass): Ugh, that was so incredibly fun. Travelling with rad dudes who have fantastic music you get to hear every night will elevate you and make you want to do better. Gurt is a killer band and a fun bunch of dudes to party with every night. I have been singing “Salt In My Vagina/Jon GarSeeYa Later" and “Battlepants” walking around in the city with a huge smile on my face since I’ve gotten back. Desertfest London was a treat, as well. We were well taken care of, packed the venue, and pretty much had the best show to date. The sound was epic and the event was really well run. I was meaning to reach out to the sound folks at the Underworld to let them know how excellent it was. Can’t ask for anything better than that?

Most people don’t remember their dreams. Mine are clear, awful, and haunting...

Jordan Perkins-Lewis (drums): Desertfest was incredible. Easily one of my favorite festivals in the world. Gurt warms the cockles of my heart. We stayed with a lot of mums on this trip. Mums go hard on tour.

Jamie McCathie (guitar): The tour was epic. For me, I got to hang with my Gurt family and introduce Brume to not only some of the best peeps on the planet, but a seriously incredible band. Gurt slayed every night. And to end the tour at Desertfest was an amazing experience. The Underworld was rammed. It’s my favorite venue in London and I never got to play there in the 7 ½ years I lived in London. It was an experience. Body Count "Get Shot" turned 'to the tour anthem after Bill and Spice banged on about how amazing the new album was -- it’s epic. It was our stage entrance tune at Desertfest. It made us feel pumped.

Which bands were you looking forward to seeing most?

Susie: Inter Arma and Elephant Tree, two current inspirations. I’m pretty pumped to say we are playing with Inter Arma again on August 17th at Thee Parkside. That makes two times in one year. #madeit

Jordan: Vodun and Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs were high on my list.

Jamie: I was so excited to see Inter Arma, and they blew my ass off. I was also excited to see bands I hadn't from the U.K. like Elephant tree, Vodun, Chubby Thunderous Bad Kush Masters and Mammoth Weed wizard Bastard. Elephant tree were one of the bands Susie and I religiously listened to when we were starting Brume. They are a huge influence on us and to do something in the future with those guys would be rad. Pete and I go a lil' way back from my Gurt days.

We spend most of our time hiding in a cave making music.

You guys worked with Gareth Kelly and his record label and PR entity When Planets Collide to set up this tour. Seeing that Brume has close ties with Gurt and the UK scene, do you have future plans to collaborate with Gurt or other bands overseas?

Susie: I have dreams of spending time, collaborating, and having future plans with a few overseas bands such as Elephant Tree, Pist, Sedulus, and Mage. You can’t fight gravity.

Jordan: We’re bringing Gurt over next year. That’s all I’ll say for now.

Jamie: The tour was special for me because I played a set with Gurt every night, the songs I could still remember. They came on stage and played "Tradewind" with us a few nights. Doing more with Gurt would be amazing. There was a lot of talk about getting Gurt over to the West Coast. We’ll see.

Any upcoming tours for Brume stateside?

Jordan: We’ll get down to Los Angeles at some point this year and hopefully back up to the Pacific Northwest. There are also rumors of the East Coast and Deep South.

Jamie: A couple of awesome shows coming up in the Bay Area -- San Jose and San Francisco with Castle and Year Of The Cobra, plus a few yet to be announced that we are crazy excited about.

Since Donkey came out, it seems a lot has happened logistically for the band. I remember discovering Donkey on Transylvanian Tapes out of Oakland. Do you still work with them? How did you transition to DHU Records?

Susie: Yeah, Transylvanian Tapes is led by this wonderful man that helps small bands like us out, but he only does tapes. DHU only does vinyl. He is also a lovely man who does a lot for us. We are grateful for Transylvanian Tapes and DHU because they not only propped us up when we were invisible to most people, they introduced us to a lot of other underground bands that now inspire us and help us progress. Very similar to you guys. If it wasn’t for Doomed & Stoned, Planets Collide, Ripple Music, Transylvanian Tapes, DHU, and these wonderful blog posts and reviews, we’d not be given the chances that we have had so far. We are incredibly grateful for it. We spend most of our time hiding in a cave making music. Y'all make us relevant and visible.

Jordan: The community surrounding bands like us, and music like ours, is absolutely the best part of doing all this. We’ve met some wonderful people who have really gone out their way to push us and encourage us to keep going. Transylvanian Tapes and DHU are a huge part of that. The support we’ve been fortunate enough to receive has been overwhelming.

Jamie: James Rauh from Transylvanian Tapes is a legend. He totally hooked us up and continues to do so much to promote Brume and a ton of the other amazing underground Bay Area bands. DHU reached out to us after Donkey came out and has been a huge partner in getting our music to wax. He puts out incredible bands and tirelessly connects with people to spread the word. When Jordan said he wanted to make a label to put out Rooster we were so pumped for him, but decided to have DHU still help with vinyl. I'm glad we did, the color looks way killer and I know people are gonna lose their shit.

What are some Bay Area bands you’re psyched on? I really enjoy Swamp Witch, Body Void, Noothgrush, Brainoil, etc. Any up-and-coming bands in that area you’re digging?

Susie: Yes, Body Void is the total package. I’m a huge gigantic fan of War Cloud and Love Moon, too. I’m wearing a War Cloud shirt right now.

Jordan: So many Bay Area bands to love! KOOK, Tvsk, Name -- it goes on and on.

Jamie: Body Void is fucking incredible. Wilt’s voice is something else, and they keep getting better with every release. KOOK from San Jose are killer, too; not only sweet guys, but man they slay live. Serpents of Dawn, Tvsk, Lowcaster, War Cloud -- it's pretty vibrant around here and getting better.

So this new album, for me, has three focal points I want to talk about: the album art, the lyrics, and, of course, the music. For the album art, you guys chose Sean Beaundry to draw up this fantastic album art. How did you find Beaundry and what made you choose him?

Susie: Jamie found him. I was slow to the party, but fell just as hard in love.

Jordan: We knew what we wanted art-wise. We didn’t know Sean would take it leaps and bounds beyond what we had imagined.

Jamie: The album name was already decided, and Shaun's birds and crows I'd seen were amazing -- plus everything he'd done for Kylesa has this modern quality that I really wanted for our artwork. I reached out to him and was lucky enough that he was pumped about the project and creating a cockatrice. He was a dream to work with and has provided us such a killer album cover. We love it.

I really like Brume’s approach with album artwork and album names. 2015 released Donkey and it aptly featured a humanoid creature with a donkey’s head on the cover. Rooster features a wrathful rooster-snake throttling a sparrow. So what’s the link between your album art and names?

Jordan: Donkey was a temporary band name when we first got started. It eventually became the name of our first EP and Jamie discovered the artwork. I think we all fell in love with the chimera idea, so once we settled on Rooster we already knew it had to be some sort of animal hybrid.

Jamie: Animal hybrids may be a theme. Or farmyard animals? Who knows.

Donkey by Brume

Some of the lyrics on this album were extractions from Victoria June Baigrie. I’ve looked her up and she’s an obscure poet. Tell us more about her work, why you chose to use her poetry, and in what ways it influenced the songwriting for the record.

Jamie: Vicci is my talented wife. The whole album was written by Susie, except "Harold" which is an extraction from a poem that she had created about an injured goldfinch she found and fostered when we lived in London. She found it lying in the street on a bustling Portobello road and swept it up, nurtured it back to health, and then took it to a wildlife reserve a week or so later. The whole experience was both rewarding and traumatic for her, so when Susie asked her to write a poem about it, she jumped at the opportunity. She's keen to write more, maybe even some short stories for books are in the future. The acoustic intro I came up with at the same time this all happened, probably six years ago, so I’m glad I could make this song come to life. Harold is the bird you see on the cover, he looks in trouble but when you see the center gatefold on the vinyl artwork you’ll notice he’s just fine.

"Call the Serpent’s Bluff" is one of the more interesting songs for me lyrically, specifically the first two stanzas.

What went into selecting these lyrics?

Susie: That was a poem I wrote one morning after a pretty bad dream. Most people don’t remember their dreams. Mine are clear, awful, and haunting most of the time. I find that writing them down helps me deal with it and try to get it out of my head. Demons and Devils pop up in my dreams a lot and not in a funny, cool, metal way. I think it was a manifestation of me fighting some bad decisions I was tempted to make and ones I have already made, except for the end of the song. The end came a year later as an epiphany when I adapted the poem to music. I remember jogging to it making up a melody to the last riff and thinking, “Oh shit, fuck that. I'm calling his bluff.” The ending was emotionally triumphant. My dreams are like I constantly have these demons fucking fight over my soul. But I won that one a year later. Weird that I’m explaining this to a stranger. Maybe I shouldn’t. Maybe you should buy me a whiskey first, and I’ll tell you the rest. I like Bulleit.

Jordan: Make mine a double.

Jamie: Three, please!

Ok, so musically this album sees Brume really hitting their stride. How did the writing process change for this record?

Susie: In 2014, we just met and started playing music together. I’m not sure much has changed in our process, except for more time spent together probably helps you build trust and learn how to collaborate easier together. I know I feel more comfortable to make armpit farts as an intro and chirp bird noises mid-song!

Jordan: The first EP was more of a rush job, since Susie was expecting and the fate of the band was unknown. We really wanted to get something out quickly. With Rooster we booked the studio time well in advance and got Billy Anderson to sign on fairy early. There was a good six months where we didn’t do anything but write and rehearse. We’ve also become quite close as a band, so we were more willing to take risks that maybe we wouldn't have attempted on the first record.

Jamie: Process-wise, the only thing that had changed was a lot more focus on lyrics and vocals. Susie and I spent a lot of time at each other’s apartments between band rehearsals focusing in on melodies, intonations, and harmonies. Thanks to all husband and wives in Brume for putting up with us!

What did you want to avoid on this record? In other words, what did you not want this record to sound like, be perceived as, and so on?

Susie: Nothing, I don’t really think that way. I just do what I want to and try not to hold back. It isn’t great life advice but for music it works well for me. Plus, if Jamie or Jordan thinks my idea sucks, they have no problem telling me. That makes it easier to go for it, as far as I’m concerned.

Jordan: We never limit what we want to do. If we like it, we do it. We don’t try to avoid sounding like anything. We sound like who we are.

While the goal should never be "longer is better" for doom, necessarily, the songs on this record are noticeably longer and more fleshed out than those on Donkey. Did this come naturally as you wrote the compositions or were you trying to write a fuller, more complete opus?

Jordan: We joke that our songs aren’t finished until they’re over the six-minute mark, but we do like to stretch things out and slow things down. We’re not in a rush to get to the next song.

Jamie: I’m a big fan of Junior Kimborough, old Bob Dylan, and Yob. Monotony is kind of my jam. Some people find that boring, I find it hypnotic and calming. There is a balancing act to keeping people engaged, so to add more flavor to a song meant making them a lil' longer than we did on Donkey. We wanted these songs to feel more epic and have more dynamics and take people on a journey, so twelve-minute songs just kind of happened.

In "Reckon," McMullen’s vocals deliver this tribal chant in the middle of the song, followed by a fucking heavy riff. It’s a big moment and it's segments like this that make Rooster stand out. What influences would you say pushed you guys to write songs like "Reckon"?

Susie: Jamie wrote that riff -- it's so good, right?! Love that shit. Lyrically, that song is about a big, ugly dude that works at NASA who looks like he should play in Crowbar that I crushed on for some time. It seemed natural to make this song a story about a badass who could match up to that riff. Tribal chants, animal sounds, three-to-four schizoid-personalities in one song, that is what speaks to me vocally and makes me feel wild and alive.

Jamie: The structure in that song came from my fear of it sounding too much like a blues thing. I think that’s where the schizoid personality comes in. There’s a lil' bit of All Them Witches, Pallbearer, and a total High on Fire "10,000 Years" riff at the end that pretty much sums up what I would have been listening to that month.

This album experimented a lot more with dynamics than Donkey. "Tradewind," which starts off with soft, somber guitar work, swells and fades throughout the song, ending on a strong crescendo. This really heightens the cathartic nature of the music. It’s purging, painful, and beautiful. Tell us more about how you guys "discovered" this element of your songwriting.

Susie: For the bass, I just try to beef up the guitars unless I can add something fun and dynamic or bring another riff that compliments Jordan or Jamie. Vocally, I like to show all sides of me. I am not strong and tough 24/7. Sometimes I’m fragile or scared or weak. Sometimes I’m pissed at the whole world and other times I want to lift the world up. I try to give all of those sides of me even if it isn’t that cool to show it. I notice when I do so then singing and playing music is therapeutic and self-nourishing. I don’t have to pretend to be something stronger than I am. It is a sustainable lifestyle being yourself. I highly recommend it.

Jordan: Metal bands have feelings, too.

Jamie: Last year's Radiohead album, A Moon Shaped Pool, was something I obsessed over. That and All Them Witches (ever since I saw them at Day of the Shred in 2014). Whilst very different artists, both bands craft albums that are rich and dynamic. They create such contrast in style and mood. I love this juxtaposition. I respect that I never know what I’m going to get with both of these artists and I was so heavily inspired by that idea, I worked hard to incorporate it into Rooster. I’m excited to see how much more contrast we can create in the future.

Week Of June 5, 2017.

My summer tour kicked off with two nights of Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds (“Dave & Tim” or “D&T”) at the beautiful Mann amphitheatre in Philly. I honestly haven’t been listening to too much Dave-related music lately (either DMB, D&T or solo), and while I was of course looking forward to the shows, it wasn’t the same level of excitement as in years past. That quickly disappeared, because the shows were AMAZING and reminded me why I love Dave’s music so much.

Some people might say, “Why did you go to two nights of the same show?” To that question I would first say, “I hate to answer a question with a question, but what’s it to you?” And second I would say “same show? What are you smoking? They only repeated ONE song. They played 55 songs total across the two nights, and 54 were different. So yes, you have no idea what you are talking about.”

Now that I got that out of my system, how about the songs themselves?! They played so many classics that I almost can’t name all of them off the top of my head, but it included rarely played songs like “Spoon”, “Fool To Think” (I LOVE that song!), songs hardly ever played acoustic, like “Why I Am”, “Pig” and “Rapunzel”, and a beautiful cover of “A Whiter Shade of Pale”. Plus all of the other classics: “Two Step”, “Tripping Billies” (with the Nature intro), “Best Of What’s Around”, “The Stone”, “Ants Marching”, “Warehouse”, etc. The list goes on and on!

If you’ve ever listened or been to a D&T show, you know how great the T of D&T is. It’s very difficult to describe what Tim Reynolds actually does when he plays with Dave & Tim. In this format, he’s a true soloist and Dave is a true rhythmist. Tim’s solos and fills are not very repetitive, and they don’t really seem scripted. It doesn’t even seem like Dave gives instructions on what general idea Tim should focus on. He just lets Tim play. Tim’s good enough to do it! For those unfamiliar with Dave & Tim, please check out the album Live At Luther College. It’s an essential album and I do not think you will regret getting it. It’s a must have.

One last thing about these shows. The crowd. Philly always brings a great crowd. Saturday night (night 2) of D&T was INSANE. The crowd was really into it and D&T was feeding off of it. You could tell. “Watchtower” and “Two Step” were real highlights. The crowd went nuts, and I was happy to be a part of it. That’s why I go.

After the Dave & Tim shows in Philly, I got a breather for one day, and then it was back to the shows to see Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds at the Electric Factory, who are currently touring in support of the great new album Skeleton Tree. I’m not really sure how to describe the show that I saw, except to say that it is INTENSE. It was my first time seeing Nick Cave, and will most definitely not be my last. The crowd was very attentive – I hardly saw anyone using their phones. Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds were great – they gave everything they could to the crowd. They played most of the Skeleton Tree album, as well as a bunch of other great songs. “Stagger Lee” was a real highlight. Holy smokes, what a performance! Do yourself a favor and check out Nick Cave & The Bad Seed’s tour dates right here and buy a ticket to the show nearest you. I don’t care how far you have to travel – you should get to one of their shows IMMEDIATELY.

The next day, me and a friend drove up to Jones Beach to see our last Dave & Tim show of the year (unless more get announced). Jones Beach is my favorite outdoor venue on the East Coast. It’s right on the bay, and is walkable to the ocean. Although the weather was cold for this show, my plan for a usual summer show at Jones Beach is to hit the beach all day, swim as much as possible, and then walk to our seats. All day at the beach and then WALK to my seat at a music venue. I don’t think you could design a better day for someone like me!

While I’m always excited for a show at Jones Beach, this one was a little bittersweet because it was my last Dave show of the summer. And I’ve been really getting into a good “summer Dave” frame of mind and spirit lately. I have a ton of live albums by them, so I’ll just have to let those hold me over until next summer!

The show did not disappoint. I had a lot of fun, and I really enjoyed the songs that they played. I was really happy to hear them play “Lover Lay Down”. That song is very special to me, and more importantly, it’s an impossibly beautiful song. I’ll never complain about hearing that one!

Tim Reynolds is a such a great guitar player to watch, and Dave is too. The next time you have a chance to see Dave play, even if it’s a YouTube video, watch his right hand while he plays. It never stops moving.

This show was also pretty special, because there were two separate guest appearances throughout the show. First, Ben The Sax Guy guested on “Tripping Billies” and “#41”. Both of these are among my favorite Dave Matthews songs. I really enjoyed watching him on “#41”. It had me thinking about all of the great DMB shows I’ve seen over the years. I can’t wait for the next DMB tour!

Then, a few songs later, Hamilton de Holanda guested on the bandolim. I had never heard of him before, but his performances were PHENOMENAL. Absolutely amazing. He guested on three songs: “Corn Bread”, “Tempo Feliz”, and “Two Step”. “Two Step” is an absurdly good song, and this was an absurdly good performance. Tim Reynolds and Hamilton de Holanda went back on forth, alternating solos, while Dave Matthews and the rest of us just stood there in awe. Hamilton de Holanda xseemed a little shy on stage while he was performing, but after he finished, the crowd gave him a really loud (and well-deserved) applause and roar, and he had a very warm smile. It was very touching to see. While I was watching that, it made me think about how music is a unifying means of communication.

On Saturday I got the chance to The Killers, a band I have been wanting to see for over 10 years now. Although I was lucky enough to see Brandon Flowers solo two summers ago, the timing had never worked for me to see The Killers. Up until now. Oh. My. Lord. What a show! What a showman! What a voice! What songs! This is the kind of show that is the reason why I go to so many shows. There was such a strong connection between the band and the crowd, and you could feel both of us trying to make that connection happen. We understand the importance of that connection. And then you have all of those great, anthemic songs. To me, The Killers are one of those bands that’s really hard to believe. They do such a great job of combining pop and rock. I’m amazed at how catchy their songs are. There are a lot of subtle details and riffs in their songs, which only add to the catchiness.

This show totally rocked, and I rocked along with it. Lots of index finger pumping, singing and dancing. And Brandon Flowers is doing all of that too. I love how he comes up to the stage and pumps his fist to the rhythm and riffs of their great songs. You can tell that he knows how great some of these anthems are. It was great to hear all of the classics, and they also played one new songs that will hopefully be on their upcoming album. I don’t know the name of the song but I enjoyed it a lot. It sounds like typical Flowers/Killers songs (in no way could that ever be a bad thing), with a verse that almost seems like he’s rapping. I can’t wait for the new album!

By the end of the night I was soaked in sweat, and was not ready to go home. Unlike the knuckleheads that were chanting for one more song, I wanted way more than one more. I want ten more songs! One hundred more songs!

The next day, I was still in New Jersey and still seeing The Killers one more time. This was actually supposed to be my first Killers show. When tickets for Sunday’s show went on sale, Saturday’s show hadn’t yet been announced. I pulled pretty good pavilion seats for Sunday’s show, and I made myself a vow that the next time The Killers come around and there’s a GA pit, I’m going and getting a pit ticket. A few weeks later they announced the Saturday show, a GA-only show. I had no choice but to get a ticket to that show as well!

Sunday’s show was actually part of a festival, so we got to see a couple of other bands, including Bleachers, a band whose music I’m not familiar with but I LOVED the show. I will definitely be checking out their albums. Jack Antonoff WORKS on stage, and the songs are really great and catchy. I’m so glad we were able to see some of their songs! I have a feeling it won’t be the last time that I see them live.

By the time The Killers were about to come on, it was extremely hot in the venue, the temperature had to have been pushing 90 degrees even in the pavilion. To me, that’s perfect weather for a summer rock show. Again, The Killers did not disappoint. They blew the roof off of the place. They opened with “Mr. Brightside”, a song that they closed with the night before. That one really got the crowd going, and they never looked back. They let it all out. I love watching Brandon Flowers perform. He is nothing but a professional on stage, and he is someone who is clearly going for “it” when he performs. The soaring vocals. The fist pumping. Running around the stage, interacting with the crowd. When a band member solos, he hides in the back so he isn’t the center of attention. What a performer.

I had such a blast at both Killers shows. I completely lost my mind during “Runaways”, that’s probably my favorite song by The Killers. That song ROCKS and I was rocking hard too. I can’t believe it took me so long to see them! They really know how to rock, and they (understandably) expect the crowd to rock along with them – right now, my right elbow is actually sore after pumping my fist all night for two straight shows. And the songs are so good, and so catchy. And there are so many good songs! It’s blind blowing watching a band where you can say, for pretty much every song they play, “Yep, even casual fans probably know this song.” Even if you don’t like catchy music, I don’t see how you can do anything but respect a band that is consistently making great, catchy, rock ‘n roll songs. It can’t be easy, because not many bands do it!
