SMCT’s production of Into The Woods was a long time in the making. This show was originally supposed to go up in the Spring of 2020, but we all know what happened next. There were times when it felt like this show was never going to happen, especially when we lost our home base in Foster, RI, where we had been since our company’s founding. Thankfully, last Summer, Holly Picard & the rest of the folks @ the Assembly Theatre in Burrillville generously invited us to come use their space. After months of discussions, negotiations and signed contracts later, we were finally able to bring Into The Woods to life in June 2022! This is one beast of a show, as all Sondheim shows usually are. But as a board member of Swamp Meadow Community Theatre, I could not be any prouder to call myself a Swamper! I am SO proud of our artistic director, Shannon McCloud for heading this fabulous production! And I am also extremely proud of the entire cast & crew, made up of both theater friends & family, from both SMCT and the Assembly Theatre! i think fen's relationship with uoser is crazy... she really respects him and wants his respect in turn but hates that she had to rely on him to help max instead of being able to handle it herself and she hates that he's sick and she can't help and she's balancing a desire to make things right with him and following through on all her promises she made to her little group and herself and her party whom she likes and trusts and respects and doing the best she can to help people while knowing captial chews you up and forces you to make extremely hard choices where no one wins but she knows as long as she's still standing she has the means to help someone else. and she's angry that he doesn't seem to see any of that in her intentions and is just disappointed in her. headinhands.

Album Review: Eli “Paperboy” Reed - Hits and Misses: The Singles

There are a couple of reasons Eli “Paperboy” Reed is not recognized as one of the 1960s’ great soul singers.

First, Reed was born in ’83. And second, the musician is as likely to lend his cries and smooth pleas to dramatically reworked, festooned-with-brass renditions of Motörhead’s “Ace of Spades” and Steely Dan’s “Do it Again” as he is to take on more genre-friendly material like Latimore’s “Let’s Straighten it Out.”

These are but three of the 11 cuts on Hits and Misses: The Singles, which collects tracks previously available only as 45-rpm vinyls at Reed’s gigs.

Also including such left-field selections as Bob Dylan’s “To be Alone with You” and Merle Haggard’s “I’m Gonna Break Every Heart I Can,” this is nevertheless a soul record through and through with the exception of the playful rocker “IDKWYCTD (I Came to Play” from “Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur” and one of three originals on the compilation.

As if to underscore the soulful point, Reed tapped the Swampers to back him on live-in-studio takes of Jimmy Hughes’ “Steal Away” and the Soul Children’s “I Don’t Know What the World is Coming To.”

This album could’ve accurately been called Hits: The Singles, for while Reed is not a chart topper, the titular misses are missing from this collection of sleeper soul classics.

All I want for Christmas is a snakeskin book?

This copy of Death Valley: Swamper Ike's Traditional Lore: Why, When, How? was a Christmas gift to the famous American lawyer, Clarence Darrow, given to him by his sister Jennie in 1903.

We definitely think this is one of the most unique bindings in our collection. The thin wood boards feature strips of snakeskin in a coiled pattern (with a drawn-in tongue!) and the title is branded onto the cover, probably with hot iron.

The book describes an excursion from Los Angeles to Death Valley in 1901.

"Ike was a peculiar character--one such as it would be expected would revel in regions the thought of which would repulse most men."
