Related to the Shia-Sunni divide, can you talk about Abdullah ibn Saba and the assassination of Uthman? I’m told that these people matter to the divide but I have no clue who they are or what their significance is.
Abdullah ibn Saba was a fictional character made up by some Sunni demagogue who claimed that the founder of Shi'a Islam was a Jew, who revered Ali (a) to the point of worship. So you know... antisemitic conspiracies, even though Islam had its origin in Judaism. Kinda weird, huh?
The assassination of Uthman was a result of his nepotism. Uthman was an Umayyad and placed his family into a position of power in various realms of the Islamic nation. Because of the misuse of the treasury, the Egyptian Muslims, in particular, complained and wanted to depose Uthman. Ali (a) and his sons did protect him with the cause of preventing an intra-religious conflict despite Ali (a) predicting that his greed would be the end of him. The people ultimately assassinated Uthman. Uthman is controversial for his nepotism and for being the primary reason why the Umayyad dynasty was formed following Ali's (a) martyrdom.

Whatever has prompted you to say any of that is a fraction of what I see on my dash every day. I mostly try to keep war and suffering off my blog with these few exceptions. Israel is a country, and countries—get this—do bad things. And when countries do bad things, maybe, just maybe, we should say ‘hey, that’s a bad thing that a powerful sovereign state really shouldn’t do’ instead of cheering them on blindly because they and their ancestors have a history of oppression. Israel isn’t Judaism itself any more than Iran is Shia Islam. Did you ever think about how counterintuitive to progress it is to base your entire view of a man or a government’s actions on their dominant religion?

Not surprised that inqilabi ignored my message about her post on how converts aren't Muslims. I can't imagine anything she replies would make anymore sense than what she originally posted anyway.
She essentially wrote something like "I identify as Muslim even though I don't believe in the aqeedah because being Muslim isn't something you can join or leave, even though that's the total opposite of what the religion actually teaches but it doesn't matter because I don't believe in the religion." Then went on to say that Prophet Muhammed (saws) was a revolutionary figure of his time but both Sunni and Shia narratives of his story are inaccurate, implying his teachings were only "codified as a religion."
First off, I'd like to say if you believe in Islam then you are Muslim, and if you don't, you aren't. Point blank period. It doesn't matter what the religion of your parents are because faith isn't genetic or about your lineage. It's true that religion is often associated with culture and ethnicity, but since the beginning Islam has never been an ethnoreligion or preached to be, unlike Judaism or Hinduism. Historically all Muslim majority nations from Indonesia, Bosnia to Senegal were practicing different religions before they converted to Islam. If you say that you can only be Muslim if you were born and raised into it, by your logic Prophet Muhammad's companions and wives who converted aren't Muslim either. Inqilabi probably knows all of this already since she admits her views go against the religion but doesn't explain how she came to this conclusion or the source for it (probably from some weird cultural gatekeeping tbh but let's not get into that right now).
She considers herself a "materialist" meaning only believing what you see in reality, but even if you look at it that way how is saying Muslim is a "cogent identity as ethnicity" logical at all? I doubt anyone would say the same for Christians.
I don't really like getting into discourse on Tumblr anymore but I see a lot of people take her opinions on Islam seriously so I felt like I had to make a counter argument.

Largest religions in Europe by country, excluding Christianity
Data for this map was compiled to the best of my abilities using the latest available data provided by Wikipedia. This data was itself collected from each country's national census data, or from surveys conducted by organizations such as PEW Research in each country. Every country has religion data that’s been collected sometime between 2011 and 2022.
☪️ Islam is the largest non-Christian religion across Europe, with 39 countries adhering to Sunni Islam and 1 country (Azerbaijan) adhering to Shia Islam. That isn't particularly surprising given that Islam is the second largest religion in the world and one of the fastest growing, though in the case of Europe the growth of Islam is due in large part to immigration, at least outside of the Balkans. Note: Sunni Islam is the largest religion within each of the constituent countries of the United Kingdom (England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland).
✡️ Judaism is the largest non-Christian religion in 5 countries (Belarus, Hungary, Monaco, Poland, San Marino). I was surprised to learn that there weren't many Jews in Europe, at least when compared to the number of Muslims. I found the predominance of Orthodox Judaism over all other branches of Judaism unsurprising, as Ashkenazi and Sephardi Jewish communities tend to adhere to either traditional or modern Orthodox Judaism. This due to the presence of a significant Vietnamese community in each country, most of whom practice a syncretic form of Mahayana Buddhism. We really need a better way to discuss some stuff. Like I'm sick of seeing, "They're not real Christians, they're not real Muslims, they're not really Jewish." Like, 99% of the time they are.
My baptist uncle who went to the super hateful church is just as much a Christian as the Pope, and the pastor at some new age, everyone is welcome, type church. None of those people have any more right to the label than any other. They're literally all interpreting the same book regardless of the conclusions they come to. I get it can be frustrating to see someone with the same label as you doing something you disagree with, but that doesn't mean they're fake and you're the only real one. It was always super invalidating growing up gay seeing people being like, "God is loving and he loves everyone, those hateful people aren't real Christians." They were Christians and they were being shit toward people like me and the answer isn't to just worry about defending yourself by denouncing them as fake. Like, god had bears maul a group of kids for making fun of a bald man. God flooded the entire world killing even babies because he felt like the world was lost (side note, this always felt like he was admitting Satan won but flipped the board and made them restart). He also is supposed to be loving and Jesus seems like a chill guy, but those aren't the only things you can pull out of the Bible.
The same goes for any religious person committing a terrorist act. They are religious and their unfortunate interpretation doesn't invalidate that. God literally had the Israelites fight wars, he killed people, he flooded the world, but the guy who does something violent in the name of Christianity is misinterpreting the Bible and isn't a true Christian?
This all really came about because of all the posts right now about Israel not being really about Judaism and instead just being about colonialism. Like, it is very much about colonialism and most of the acts committed by Zionists are more because of that cultural aspect than anything to do with religion, but they're still very much Jewish and doing it for Judaism too. "They repressed and attempted to destroy Yiddish culture and language," yeah and Christian and Muslim sects have gone to war with each other a million times, I don't hear that invalidating Sunni or Shia Muslims from being real Muslims because they've had some violent pasts. "They don't accept African, Palestinian, etc. Jews because they're a racist movement," yeah racism is a huge part of Zionism, but it's still Jewish too. "They were shitty about Holocaust victims, attack pro-palestinian Jews, etc.," they're still at their core a Jewish movement that is about establishing a Jewish homeland for Jews. Being selective about the race/beliefs/culture/language of Jewish they support doesn't mean they're not Jewish. They're just also racist and xenophobic colonists.
For Israel specifically I think a lot of it also comes from the very real threat of antisemitism and the need people feel to separate Zionism from Judaism because if people hate Zionists they too often extend that to Jewish people (or just use it as cover for their pre-existing antisemitic beliefs).
We need some way to better say, Zionists are Jewish and their movement is a Jewish one, born-again Christians who would burn me at the stake and would force a pregnant woman to die in childbirth for a non-viable fetus are real Christians, the Taliban is a real Islamic group. Those just aren't anywhere close to representative of the larger groups as a whole and hatred for them should never be extended to the larger group.
I think if anything the "They aren't real ___," actually isn't helping because the people who want to use it to justify their pre-existing hatred will do it anyways. Anyone else will look at it and be like, well obviously they actually are even if you don't agree with them. So I don't think many people are being swayed into the belief that they aren't part of the larger group and instead you'd be better off pointing out they aren't representative of the whole.
All my examples are also religious because I feel like that's where I see this most, but it obviously applies to nearly any large group with subgroups that have conflicting ideas.
tldr; we need a better way to talk about the issues with small subsets of larger groups without saying, "they aren't real ___," because they usually are. Instead we need to discuss that groups aren't monolithic and an issue with one part doesn't justify hatred toward the whole.

1 Kings 22: 29-40. "The Random Arrow."
Ahab Killed at Ramoth Gilead
29 So the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat king of Judah went up to Ramoth Gilead.
